Review Kanitar Thai Restaurant - Geelong

Coffee Bay
Brought the family for dinner. Entrees were ok however the satay sauce was well below average, for a Thai restaurant it should be super. For mains we had green chicken curry, massaman beef and drunken noodles. The curries were great but the noodles missed the target. Serving sizes are average and prices are on the higher end. Would I come back, maybe.
Miko Mai
The best Thai restaurant we ever had in Australia 💓 Delightful food 👍🏼 Friendly staff 👍🏼 Reasonable prices 👍🏼

We had delicoius Tai food for dinner from this place. I was told that plain rice and few dishes would be better choice than the fridge rice options they have and it turned out to be true.

We ordered take away from here, they told us it would take around 15 minutes which was fine. We waited in the chairs they provide, in clear view of the counter (directly in front of the counter) and after 25 minutes asked if there was any news on our order. She said it hadn't come, then noticed a bag on the far end under her counter, she said OH here it is, passed it over. We opened it and my wife said, this is cold it must have been here for ages! They just said "no no, maybe 5 mins" we had to ask for it to be reheated and they didn't know what to do so we said just put it in the microwave then. She took it to the kitchen, returned with it less then a minute later, it was warmer but not hot and i couldn't even eat it. tasted horrible. We we're recommended to goto this place by a friend who said it was great, and that's the only reason they are not getting 1 star.
Andrew Cowell
Great food, quite an extensive menu. 5 stars would be given had all the food arrived at the same time, but it was busy and they did seem a little under-staffed. However, the table-spacing is good - I absolutely hate it when you are so crammed-in it's impossible to have a conversation. Not here, though. I'd advise eating early to avoid a wait, but the food is definitely worth the visit. Just the right amount of spice, fresh vegetables and piping-hot.

Great food. Service is a bit up and down. I'd go back.

Best tom yum in Geelong, bit salty and sour taste of phathai but overall very nice dining

Good thing about here was that on a weekday this was the only restaurant we found open at 9pm. But they didn’t let us dine in so had to do takeaway. Interiors were pretty old style- typical regional and food in terms was average. Prices were usual.
Sam Gruggen
Waited 1hr for the food to come. Poor service and do not recommend

Last night we bought take away and ordered the 'pad med ma muang' (sweet chilli cashew stir fry) and I was disappointed at how oily the meal was. I had really greasy hands from just touching the container. We had to drain the containers to try get as much of the oily sauce out as possible. We have had this dish a few times before in the restaurant and it has been a lovely, fresh, tasty meal. This time it was heavy and pretty unpleasant to eat. I have eaten at Kanitar several times before and have always enjoyed the variety and quality of the food. I'm reluctant to go back now after this recent experience, however.

Had our food delivered, was yum, but unfortunately had to re-heat it befor we could eat it, as it arrived cold.
Donna Shay Tiller
Been there many times. Excellent Thai food! Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere.

Always enjoy the food here. They are obliging when I have special dietary requests.

Overall rating: 3.5

Was craving some Asian food at my 5 day stay in Geelong and decided to go for this popular Thai restaurant. There was ample seating but very empty.

My favourite were definitely their mains: their Pad See Ew and Pad Thai, and Chicken Green Curry. Sides were pretty average. Flavours were spot on but tasted cheap. Plating was quite average. The satay skewers would be a nice side to share.

Loved the option being able to choose the level of spice for each dish, which staff did well as you could taste the different levels of chilli for each dish.

Pad See Ew was exploding with sweet, savoury and a touch of sour flavour as well as the spicy from the peppercorns hiding in this colourful rice noodle dish. Beef was cooked perfectly and was juicy.

Pad Thai was just as good but there was just a bit too much sauce on the plate and too much noodle that it almost tasted as if there was no seafood on the plate. Pad Thai is a bit on the sweeter side compared to other restaurants but was still enjoyable.

Overall, could be better, but was a very filling and hearty meal.

Food: 3.5
Value: 4
Ambience: 3
Service: 4.5

I said "less sugar in all dishes please" but they all came out very sweet. Grapow was not spicy at all, how could you call it "basil and chilli stir fry" without a hint of spiciness? When we mentioned this at the cashier, they said they did "mild" by default. But shouldn't it be medium? Or why not ask how spicy we would like when taking orders? Despite the large quantities and huge fresh prawns, flavours were pretty disappointing. The Yum Puk salad with peanut butter was interesting and not often seen on other Thai menus, though.

Had a good rating, hence we decided to stop here for dinner while passing through Geelong. But it turned out to be just an average Thai restaurant. The flavours were more Australian Thai rather than traditional Thai. We tried out the seafood Tom Yum, special fried rice, lamb massaman, and prawns with red curry sauce. All the dishes were quite average. The staff were really friendly though. But not stopping by here again.

A alright Thai diner in Geelong - we were told by the staffs that it's run by the same management with the all-time busy Arani restaurant so we are quite comfortable with this.
Foods are not bad - the taste is more accommodates to Australian-Asian style, with less hot spices but more sweet spicy. Portions are huge though.
Food 2 Run
A great 👍🏾 restaurant and the food was really really good from entree to mains couldn’t fault it-a must if you want Thai in Geelong....good wine list as well
Alex
Ordered takeaway from here. The inside of the restaurant seemed large and quite up market. The food was made fast; however, lacked certain flavours often found from other Thai restaurants and curries.
Matt
Was told I had to pay more for pick up over delivery. Poor customer service. Food was very average. The vegies were raw and not cooked, steamed at all. Very poor experience and will never be going back.
JM
Overrated

Food was nice although a bit pricey for some dishes.

Ordered rice and noodle dishes. Would not go out of the way to go there. Better than food hall of course.

Nothing spectacular

Had the panang curry to takeaway and the flavour was excellent. Service was prompt & friendly and the atmosphere was quiet and nice! Will be coming back.

I had takeaway last week, it was very good. I ordered tonight and it was the worse Thai food I have ever eaten. Really rubbish, no taste, no spice a bellow average meal.

Sunday night dinner

3.5/5 - Entre / Mains - Average Thai Food, excellent options on the menu, decent quality, Good portions (Large - perfect for sharing)
2.5/5 - Service - 1 Waitress running the floor - hard to get their attention
3/5 - Atmosphere - Suitable for families (High Chairs available), Large Groups, easy to find in the heart of Geelong and heaps of parking out the front. (Decor and Resturant is a bit dull)

This is an average Thai restaurant , average prices - nothing wow - good meals and decent portion

Food: OK
Service: Good
Price: OK
Environment: Very Good
Location: Good

I visited Geelong and found this place for dinner from rating app. Restaurant easy to find. Environment very nice. Staffs friendly and food serving reasonably quick. Ordered curry dishes and soups. Food tasted sweet. Offering from taste of curry dishes expected.
Tony
Came by for a late dinner when we were on a round the bay trip, driving down to the Peninsula, ferrying across and driving back to Melbourne CBD.

Not too bad Thai, great service, good flavours, and very crowded on a weekday night. Good choice for dinner if you're ever in town.
Danielle Roberts
Absolutely delicious! Thoroughly enjoyed chicken pad satay stir fry and duck panang red curry with coconut rice.
Kanitar Thai Restaurant 5/5
Allan
Upon entry observed large wet carpet stain and associated odour near water fountain. Mood was pleasant, ordered lamb curry got served beef, pad thai noodles were rubbery.
The food was under par, i have had better food from a roadside caravan. I think this place needs a new chef because the venue is nice, the staff ok, but the food is poor.

Sat for 30mins after arriving, waiting to be served, on a quiet Wednesday night. Can't rate the food as we left and went to La Porchetta next door. The chilled water we were served was excellent.
FineDiners
We love Thai food and this restaurant is definitely up to scratch. The dishes were tasty and flavoursome. The staff were friendly also. A place we would recommend for anyone in the Geelong area.

Big fan of Thai cusine. I had heard good reports about Kanitar so went there for my Birthday with Family.

The meals were beautiful. One of our party has a number of food allergies and they were only too happy to accomodate her meal requests. I had the Whole Baramundi in Red Curry sauce. Was delicious.

Restaurant was typical of a Thai restaurant. It was comfortable and clean. Wait staff were pleasant and attentive without being intrusive. My only disappointment was there appeared to be no Dessert options. Maybe there was a separate dessert menu? Not sure.

Was a very nice evening. Pricing was good. Would recommend.
Peaceloveandfoodiness
Excellent Thai food that's close to authentic (for Australian standards anyway haha) and served with fresh ingredients. So many Thai restaurants in Geelong lack the flavours that Kanitar have in their recipes. One of my regular places
Andy Smith
Went in tonight restaurant half full. After being seated for 20 minutes we were not given a menu or asked for a drink order. Other people who came in after us seemed to get served. We walked out and told them there was no service but they couldn't care less. We went across the road to Shiraaz indian and received proper service. Won't go back or recommend.

Nice, big restaurant, gives the couple up to parties of many feeling of privacy! Wide selection of food on the menu. Food was very tasty and service was friendly, thorough and fast! A lot of good Thai restaurants in Geelong, this one definitely challenges!!!
Helen
In search of good Thai food and we found it. Service was friendly and efficient. Wine glasses arrived quickly for BYO wine, as did the appetisers (Thai Curry Puffs and Fish Cakes ). Dipping sauces were light but tasty. Drunken Noodles was very good, vegetables al dente, and 'Medium' spicing just right. Hot would have been painful. Incredibly generous portions so dessert was not a possibility.
All in all, a terrific choice.
Clare
Best thai i have had. Trumps Melbourne!. My boyfriend is from Geelong and he wanted to take me out for Valentines day. I was so blown away by Kanitar Thai. The staff were so genuine and lovely, always smiling and checking to see if we were alright/happy.
We ordered the Drunken noodles as an experiment because the name sounded entertaining. It is easily the nicest dish i have had!
The flat rice noodles were to die for. And i am a pad thai lover so that is saying something that i could be diverted away from my stock standard dish.
The atmosphere is great as the restaurant is dimly lit making it very romantic and though busy, it was not noisy at all. So nice to be able to talk and not shout over dinner.
The potion size of our meal was amazing value for money. We had to take some home with us as we just could not fit anymore in....and we tried!
Once again, the food and overall service and experience will have us coming back for more!
Melbourne Thai restaurants will have to up their game!

Good Thai. Excellent Thai restaurant in Geelong. Service was a little slow but a manager came and apologised and was very friendly. The food was delicious and servings were larger than I expected considering the reasonable prices. Left fat and happy.

New owners. Under new ownership. No longer gluten free.
Just Some Dude
Impressive first time. The new owners have moved in, with the same chef from Arani down the road. We were very impressed. Attentive staff, food was fantastic - the penang curry was rich, spicy and delicious. HUGE portions. My girlfriend and I ordered a medium rice to share which could easily have been a small and we couldn't finish our mains (and I'm a big eater). Will definitely be back!
NatP
Lovely attentive service. The servings are very generous but you appreciate them because the food was beautiful! Highly recommend.

Great vegan options :). As a vegan it is always incredibly difficult to find vegan-friendly options in 99% of restaurants yet alone in Geelong but these guys have plenty of absolutely amazing dishes available for me. The vegetarian menu is extensive and dishes can easily be tweaked to suit vegans and they are super patient when I'm asking about the ingredients in the meals. I'm actually going back tonight for some amazing vegetarian red curry and thought I'd give this place a nice review because they aren't always busy but they certainly deserve more customers for their outstanding service and quality of food :)

Excellent food and service. Best thai in Geelong by far, lots of options and kids loved it and so did we. Quiet clean and very nice food, I will be back here for sure. Pad Thai was great prawn satay great.

Never disappointed. Our family has been enjoying the food at Kanitar for many years and I can honestly say we have never been disappointed. We have tried almost everything on the menu and have loved it all. The staff are always attentive and friendly, "the smiling man" description is very apt. My husband enjoys his food very spicy and is often given a side dish of extra chillies to add if he wants it hotter. I can't recommend Kanitar highly enough.
Brogs
Not authentic Thai. Pad Thai too saucy, chilli beef way too salty. Not fresh or vibrant. Service was friendly though.
Matt Rollo
Absolutely loved this place! My parents don't really eat Thai, so I was hesitant on taking them to a place I've never been before.

Glad I risked it! This place is great, surprised with the negative reviews as the food is the closest tasting food to authentic that I've had. Quality chicken, none of this rubbish thigh stuff that people try to palm off.

Had the panang, green curry and pad Thai shared between us all and we all left completely full (4 of us). Fantastic and attentive service and food was served without delay.

Will absolutely be back!!

Best thai in Geelong. Kanitar serves up the best authentic Thai food in Geelong. The food is consistently great and you can taste the freshness. The service is always excellent and everyone is so polite.
Tlongo_2003
Great Thai Restaurant. Kanitar Thai always serves a great meal and has fantastic customer service. I eat here a lot and love it everytime!!! The very friendly staff will always go above and beyond to satify their customers. Highly recommend
Anakie77
Just horrible! Nothing like the Thai food you would get in Melbourne. The satay tastes NOTHING LIKE SATAY, what the hell?? Everything has a horrible unfamiliar taste to it, so disappointed and quiet shocked at how this place can have highest reviews. Please don't eat here if you enjoy real authentic Thai flavours.

Best Thai in Geelong. Clean fresh and fast. Very friendly and polite service. Will definitely be back!

Really nice food and atmosphere. Gave us spring rolls for free because they were apparently slightly overcooked but we didn't even notice!

Great Vegetarian dinner!. The was definitely wonderful. Considering most restaurants dont give much choice for vegetarians, this one was actually pretty good. The green curry was to die for. Pad thai was also lovely. The prompt service was just icing on the cake. Would recommend people to give this restaurant a shot!

It's good for the food. haha..nice!

Best Pad Thai in Melbourne. Me and my family keep coming back to Geelong just for it. Friendly, good customer service

Best thai food and service!. In the four years i have lived in geelong kanitar thai has always been my go to for thai food! i have occasionally been taken to other restaurants around town with friends but none even come close. the food is very authentic and they will accomodate for any taste. my favourite is green chicken curry and pad thai though i have never disliked anything that came from their kitchen. my work mates nicknamed it 'laughing man' as the staff are so lovely and enjoyable!!! could not recommend high enough :-)

Fantastic meal with friendly service. One of my favourite venues. Fantastic meals at a great price with friendly service what more could a girl want.
Jackie Guy
Food was ok, rice was way too gluggy and service took a while.
Girlgeelong
Shocking!. Food was served cold , my curry sat on the table for 10 minutes while I waited for my rice to come. The rice was gluggy when it came out as well. I asked for a spicy hot curry , their was no *hot* about it and it was soo watered down . As far as I am concerned a waste of good money. Staff were running around like headless chooks not knowing what they were doing. Is there a decent Thai restaurant in Geelong? Or must we go to Melbourne.
LOIS
AVERAGE ........Sorry Geelong, your Thai food restaurant experience has left me wanting:( the beef with chilli & lemongrass, chilli and coriander was not hot ( meal served cold) and the meat tough. Unacceptable! The masssaman curry was ok but not spectacular. Rice was very over cooked. Sorry, I won't be returning and would discourage those who like good food, to find another thai place to eat. The best things about this place was the comfortable seats, great ambience and wonderful helpful and attentive staff . 6/10
Rosie
Friendly service and well priced delicious dishes in a modern and clean setting! 10/10
Spiral Stairs
Sorry guys, after living in Melbourne with all the great Thai restaurants there, this place didn't live up to expectations. Service was slow, food was on the bland side. We won't be returning.
Narelle
I've been to many Thai restaurants but this was a disappointment. Didn't taste like what real authentic Thai food should taste like! Left feeling unsatisfied. Definitely wont be returning!!!!
FoodMan
As a lover of Pad Thai I was keen on trying what Kanitar had to offer, but what I handed was NOT REAL Pad Thai. I have been to Thailand and a number of Thai restaurants but never had a Pad Thai made with carrot. The taste was bland and the serving size was small. I suspect they may be Loas cooking, definately not Thai.
Review Man
Really good thai!. A really good feed and at decent prices. All dishes are tasty and all the staff are friendly. Recently moved next door to a bigger premises which is spacious. They do a $9 lunch menu which is great if you're working nearby throughout the working week. A regular favourite of mine and the family. Will always be back.
Cubalicious
Was there on 11 Jan evening for dinner. Waited an hour for our meal to be served, and we were not the only tables waiting for over an hour. We even joked with another table about having to look at the breakfast menu. The pad thai was undercooked and they re-served it soggy with sweet chili sauce. The fried rice was not amazing. The green curry was miserly with ingredients. When we mentioned to hte manager about the long wait, he expressed surprise. Another staff explained that one chef was sick and thus the long wait. The poor food and poor service really differs from the 90% raving reviews. Just a bad day? Remains to be seen

Huge takeaway containers. Excellent gang panang prawns with heaps of prawns.

Absolutely delicious! Will definitely be back!
FoodSnob101
An excellent recommendation from a friend. My regular Thai haunt in Geelong, Panny Thai, has slipped considerably in their standards of late, and after experiencing a watered-down, flavourless Red curry last week, I finally decided that I needed a new regular Thai place.

I think Kanitar Thai fits the bill. On take away today, the Thai green curry was flavoursome and tasty, and definitely not watered down. The entrees such as the spring rolls and delightful wontons with chicken and prawn were also a highlight.

Service was friendly, and although I didn't dine in on this occasion, the restaurant premises are spacious, clean and have well spaced out tables.

I'll definitely be back!
James
Terrible service. As I write this it's been an hour and I still haven't received my food.
Gemma
Best Thai in Geelong!. I went to the new location (next door) of kanitar restaurant for the first time, and was amazed at how good the food was! It was cheap, had large serving sizes, and each meal was equally delicious. We had the roti bread and it was probably the best I have had, and I go out for Thai a lot. I will definitely come back and have some more!
Maddy
AMAZING. Amazingly, delicious food. Went there once and never go anywhere else. Wonderful atmosphere and super friendly staff! The food is cheap and high quality! Best pad Thai you'll find anywhere!
Lauren Dawes
Ate here with my family drinks and full banquet was under 100 dollars total, food was amazing and was definitely happy with the service. love this place!

BEST THAI IN GEELONG!. Kanitar thai is the best in Geelong! We have tried so many others and always regret not going to Kanitar. Friendly staff and great food.

Great food, service and price. Tonight myself and 6other found our selves very pleasantly surprised by the great food and service at Kanitar Thai. as none of use were from Geelong and were all hungry we looked on urbanspoon and checked this place out. dont be put off by the looks of the interior as the food was amazing. as were are all vegetarian we were happy to see that there was lot of choices for us and they all tasted great. i dont head to Geelong often but this one will be getting visited again. note we all left happy and full for under $17 each :)
Gee
We always order the green curry with coconut rice. Also like their fried cuttlefish and fishcakes. Quiet place, nice to sit and chat. Unpretentious good food.

Fantastic!!. Had dinner here last night and all I can say is the food was AMAZING, great service and great price. Will definitely be going back and will recommend to my friends and family!
The roti bread is too die for but make sure you order it with a dish that has lots of sauce for dipping.....yum!

The food is so good here, definitely the best Thai in geelong! Good value, large portions and delicious. The pad Thai was to die for. My new favourite

Best Thai in Geelong. Authentic Thai flavours. Penang curry is our fave. The won tons are a must too.

Best pad thai in town!. It's a nice little restaurant on a busy street, you can easily missed! we've been here many many times, and has never let us down! seafood pad thai is to die for..

Good food ! Tom yum chicken soup was FULL of chicken, ordered spicy - GOT SPICY ! Burnt my lips off.... LOL great dish Chicken larb, not a huge amount of flavour - was lots and nice - definitely come again next trip to Geelong
Anita
Yummo. We r local to Geelong, but it was our first visit to Kanitar and we were not disappointed at all.
The food was amazing the service lovely.
We started with wontons, spring rolls and cicken satays they were all yummy out fussy 5yr old scoffed them down.
For mains we ordered PadThai, red curry and penang curry to share these were the best Thai curries we had eaten in a very long time.
We would highly highly recommend this resteraunt.
Ann-Marie
Yummy for all!. We found this place thanks to urban spoon and we were delighted with the choice we made. It is a small family owned business with a very clean premise and interesting colour combination.

We started with the roti bread with peanut sauce, it was fantastic this is one of our standard dishes whenever we go to Thai and this definitely tops the list of best dishes for us.

We ordered three main dishes to share with coconut rice and were presently surprised with the high quality food. However the best surprise was when we received the bill, for the quality and amount of food we got it was cheap (almost like we were back in Thailand)
Maria Jones
A great little family-owned and run restaurant. Authentic Thai food at it's finest especially for the budget-minded. Very friendly service, and always greeted with a smile. Atmosphere is great too with pleasant background music, perfect for the work lunch break and dinner banquets.

So you're in Geelong. You're hungry. And you're hankering for some Southeast Asian goodness? I say, mosy on down to Kanitar on Malop St - the town's main drag. I hadn't been there before, but I wondered in after seeing the golden statues and hoping for th
