Review Nagoya Japanese Restaurant - Glen Huntly

John Togno
Hidden suburban gem that's been there since 1987. Straightforward authentic Japanese, no steps to update cooking style and they do this very well. Very well priced including drinks list, Sapporo for $6! No split bills though

This place had had some good reviews so our expectations were high. How disappointing. Very ordinary food lacking the usual Japanese delecate touch. Try elsewhere.

An amazing place for a date night! The sashimi was delicious and the soy sauce came out in an adorable little tea pot. The teriyaki chicken was delicious as well as our noodles. The staff were friendly and the food came out quickly as well! I’m excited to go back again and try more food on the menu

Cute, quaint little place. The owners are typically Japanese, very polite and lovely. Great for my kids too. Would've given 5 but it's just a tad pricey (like all good Japanese places..)

Absolutely delicious food. Fantastic service. This is one I would definitely recommend. And such great value.

Quality and value for money Japanese cuisine..... a rare find indeed

I've been ordering/ dining in at this restaurant for around 20years. Food ALWAYS fresh ALWAYS amazing. Friendly staff and very reasonable pricing. 5 stars for me.

The sashimi portion and cut are just disgraceful. Tuna and salmon came in 9 pieces. But the cut was so bad that couldn’t separate at all. The tuna in particular was chewy and wasn’t supposed to be served at all.

I used to eat here regularly - the food was ok. But it's gone way downhill. We waited almost one and a half hours for our main course. Serves are relatively small and the food is below average if you can handle the nervous breakdown waiting for your food.

Date night ruined. We got the sukiyaki set for the two of us and my lord was the table cooking rushed. Was not prepared well. Having half cooked vegetables forced onto our plates was not great at all. I would have personally preferred to cook it myself. A supposed good night turned horrifically bad

This used to be a fantastic Japanese restaurant, unfortunately it is no longer fantastic, it is filthy. The vegetables were definitely past use by, sukiyaki was cooked at the table on a mini bbq that was covered in the remnants of years of cooking, I couldn’t bring myself to touch the knob on the burner. The thin strips of meat were all mashed together like lumps of steak. Sashimi was also second rate, chewy and stringy.
Must have changed hands at some point because the previous classy meal was nowhere to be seen.
So dirty.

Good dining experience and reasonably priced.
I met a friend for some long overdue catch-up and enjoyed a beer, warm sake, edamame, agadeshu, and a sushi deluxe platter (which comes in a ginormous sailing ship). Capped it off w/ fruit and ice cream. All up = $125.

Service was really good w/ attentive staff and fresh food. The edamame was good as was the agadeshu. The sushi platter wasn't bad but a bit disappointed in the selection and serving size. We paid the extra $ for salmon and tuna only and felt the portions could've been more generous.

I'd definitely give this restaurant another go, although might be more selective of any sushi/ sashimi selections before ordering.

Well worth the visit and recommend you give it a go too !

We had a delicious meal! This place is reasonably priced and we hd such a great dining experience we celebrated with a 300ml bottle of hot saki which was presented in a figurine that pours from the mouth! Definitely will come back again.

Food here is absolutely amazing!!! The food and the service everything's on point!!! It's just surprising how smooth every dish could go together from entree to desert. Highly recommend definitely worth to come down to Glen Huntly just to try out this! Btw it get's really busy at weekend make sure book a table in advance!

Our local Japanese only waking distance away. Too late (8pm) for us to dine-in with bub, so takeaway it was. We ordered a few rolls, mixed sashimi, gyoza, miso eggplant and teriyaki chicken. Sashimi was fresh ad tasty though some pieces weren't separated leading me to believe the knife was slightly blunt. Did I really care? No.
Eggplant, gyoza and chicken were great dishes. Presented really well too. The sushi rolls were ok. Too much rice and not enough filling.

Would i order the rolls again? Probably not. Would I go back, most definitely.

The sashimi is always fresh and tasty!! The staff are always ultra friendly. My favourite on the menu is their bean shoot salad, super light and fresh!

Great atmosphere and fresh produce. Wait staff are well trained and polite.
Food is good quality too. I enjoy the beef tataki, and sashimi. The cooked dishes are well balanced and tasty. Many japanese restaurants I've been to the cooked meals are quite sweet, but not here. Definitely a must try, good to go on weeknights when its a little less busy to avoid the wait and enjoy a plesant meal. 🖒

Nagoya you changed :( We used to live in the area and have been going there a few times a year for about 7 years, but something has changed and it's not for the better.

Waited 40 minutes to get a waitresses attention to be told they forgot to give our order to the chef. she offered a free round of drinks as an apology which was fine, but then when the food did come the entrees and 1 main was served together and we had to wait another 30 minutes for 2nd main to arrive.

I got the Nagoya Bentoh (usually a reliable classic). Cucumber, tomato salad was dry. The cucumber had that fury texture it gets when it's been sliced and left to sit for hours. No mayo on the Daicon, chicken was gristle and then a tough over cooked tonkatsu that wasn't cut so impossible to eat with chopsticks and the salmon sashimi was just sad. It had dried ends and was rough and looked like someone hacked it of.

All in all pretty average food and less than average service. But when I went to pay I saw something that means I don't think we'll be back. The mix of bean shoots and carrot that they give as an appetizer was stored in an old plastic tub that looked dirty and gross.

I'm sorry to say this once good honest restaurant has dropped the ball .

Popped in for an early dinner. Love the late 80s, early 90s Japanese decor. It is all immaculately presented and clean. Friendly service, with our waitress wearing a traditional Japanese outfit. Her English wasn't great but we had no problems. Extensive menu with good vego and vegan options. Very reasonable prices. My vege bentoh was the best I've ever had, and all prepared fresh. Well priced alcoholic drinks. Just $5 for a glass of Japanese plum wine. Will definitely return. Note: $25 eftpos minimum. They also do take-away.

(Sunday 18/9/2016)

Came here for a family dinner for 6. Was rather disappointed with the whole experience. Restaurant set up was average, staffs during the period of my meal were insufficient and awkward. There was this waitress in a kimono that took our orders; she spoke poorly and had asked us for our orders not once or twice but several times, which shows poor professionalism. I could tell she was confused and unsure about the things we've asked, regarding the ingredients on certain meals. Plus, she kept asking us about the food, is it for sharing or individual? Does it matter ? Will it affect the portion or price ? She couldn't explain to us as well.

Water or the usual Japanese green tea wasn't served or on the house, had to wait 10 mins and remind them for it. In fact, hot green tea has to be charge for $2 a pax. The tea served wasn't even well flavored and contained only very few tea leaves.

Food arrived in a reasonable pace. Partner ordered vegetarian soba; no doubt it was full of flavour, but it was salty and greasy. She also ordered the Vege California roll which comes in 6 equal sized sushi. The taste of the rolls were mediocre. The family ordered kaisen soba (own preference), nagoya bentoh, unadon and kaisen udon (soup). I, myself ordered the "sakana no butter yaki", which is the grilled fish in garlic butter sauce. I think it was pretty alright, some hit or miss with the fish as it was dry on one fillet and it was perfect on the other. The portion was not big and had to other a rice bowl to eat with it. Was it because i mentioned individual earlier ?

Overall, I think it was an awkward experience for me. Restaurant was not super busy but staffs were still inefficient.
I love the beef Tataki and Nasu so much. All the source and food they make by themselves. I saw a lady is making Gyoza when I am waiting for take-away. Also, the sashimi is pretty fresh~~ ❤️

Rather underwhelming experience. I ordered an una don and found it entirely drenched in an over salted sauce. The waitress kept hovering and was almost in my face, and yet I could barely hear what she was saying since she mumbled quietly. Quite a shame, seeing how the restaurant is kitted out nicely and feels quite authentic. I can't say I feel the same about the food.

Good restaurant, its Japanese food is affordable and the sashimi is really fresh. $25 is enough for one. Pancake is different with other restaurants, but it's really delicious, so I recommend you to try it.

Have been going here for years and keep on returning, it's a really great cheap and cheerful suburban gem. The staples for us are the gyoza, okonomiyaki and beef no tataki. The katsu and tetsuta age are also really good.

We have been coming here on and off for 8 years for the simple but tasty and inexpensive food. Last night was a huge disappointment though and we won't be returning. I'm not sure if there has been a change of management however the prices have all gone up and the quality of the food has gone down considerably.
The small salad was nice and the Miso was fine however the tuna sashimi came out in bits that looked like tiny misshapen offcuts, sinewey and with dark dry edges. Not even close to what is shown in the picture above. Gyoza were O.k, but our sizzling plate of beef was quite plain. There is only one type of Sake available though two are advertised. I would much rather go down the road to UZU in Caulfield who are fresh and tasty, generous and cheaper than Nagoya.

We came here for a birthday dinner and the food was good and the service excellent. The portions were on the small side though and it felt a little expensive for what we got, but overall it was an enjoyable night.

The Tatsuta Age is the highlight, the chicken pieces are tasty and juicy. Each of the other morsels complement each other and to me this is the perfect bento at the right price. The restaurant itself still has its 90's decore and the ambience isn't exactly inviting (elevator music is played), however it's a great local for a quick bite. I come here weekly and never get sick of it.

Reasonable service, very average food.. Went for dinner last night with my lady friend and had a middling experience. The service was discreet and reasonably prompt, we were treated to a nice little complimentary salad as we waited for our meals and the prices were reasonable. The food, however, let the experience down. I had a Teriyaki fish dish; the fish was so dry, it just stuck in my throat with every bite. The sauce with it so bland and yet was the overwhelming flavour of the dish. I probably wouldn't go back based on the food, but the restaurant had more patrons than any of the others in the local area, so perhaps my experience was unique.

Dont come here. Bad food bad service. Clams are not fresh. Sushi rice is dry. Tempura is greasy. Beef teriyaki is very plain.

Salmon is nice. But you get good quality salmon all over this country.

Disappointing. The deco may be Japanese but the food is not Japanese. Yes, staff and owner may not have to be Japanese to run a Japanese restaurant, but the food... is rather a bad Japanesey, NOT Japanese. Staff did not understand when we pronounced the menu correctly. We ordered Yakisoba which looked and tasted like hokkien noodle. Not udon nor buckwheat soba. It was literally fried hokkien noodle. The Okonomitaki didn't look like one at all. It was thin and flat batter with few shredded carrots and onion only. It has no taste. Luckily the 'straight from the bottle' mayo and the brown sauce they served were not bad. Without it, no way we could have eaten the pancake. To be fair, the yakisoba (fried hokkien noodle) tasted OK even though it wasn't yakisoba at all.

Love it!. Restaurant decor nothing even slightly special but this place makes up for it with their delicious food and great value for money. Highly recommend!

Not so Japanese.. I didn't like this restaurant at all. The service was very poor and very discriminatory towards Asian customers. We were the 3rd or 4th table occupied before the entire restaurant filled up.

When we ordered, it took 20 minutes for our first entree to arrive. It was MISO SOUP. The Miso soup was very salty but seeing that we were hungry, we didn't care. Next up we had Gyu tataki. At this point I suspected the people running the restaurant weren't Japanese because they don't put a lot of pride in their knife skills. We got little pieces of butchered meat drowned in what tasted like plain soy sauce. No citrus tones from the ponzu. The next entree was an Ebi salad that had obviously been catered to westerners. It was a prawn cocktail with thousand island sauce with a few vegetables. It wasn't that bad, just not what you would expect from a Japanese restaurant. I've seen Yum Cha restaurants that serve prawn, apple, corn and mayonnaise in a small taco shell. Yuck!

We ordered a Sukiyaki for our main which only came when we complained to the staff, 30 minutes after we finished our entrees. We ordered this long before the table next to us but they got theirs within 10 minutes of ordering. To make matters worse, the Sukiyaki came out ready made. No raw ingredients, no gas burner. It looked like everything was boiled in Sukiyaki sauce before it was delivered to us.

I like to eat my Sukiyaki with the freshly sliced raw beef in my bowl, the vegetables cooked and caramelised before the Sukiyaki sauce is poured in. While the the pot is simmering and the ingredients are hot, I get a scoop full of the soup and vegetables and pour it into my bowl. The hot liquid cooking my beef to tender perfection. I pick up the piece of beef, dip it in raw egg and then I eat it. Sigh.

Anyhow, after we got our main, we lost our appetite from waiting too long. We were tempted to give it back and not pay for it, but it was already cooked. I never heard of Sukiyaki take away before so this must be a world first. $43 for two take away tubs. Yippee.

I wouldn't go back. I've had a lot better. There's nothing genuine about this place. If you like this place, then I suggest you not go anywhere else and keep supporting them.

Good consistent quality. Good round up of traditional Japanese dishes in a traditional Japanese restaurant setting. Inexpensive , e.g. $11 for chicken teriyaki, big portion of fresh tasty and well cooked chicken.
red-style Miso soup is good too
KatMmm
Decent food quality, very reasonable pricing and generous portions. The only let down was the slow and lukewarm service.

Had the banquet for 2. Amazing. Soooo much food. Good value for your money. Ours came to the same price as other couples who were having seperate dishes from the menu. Banquet is with it! I'll be back!

Quick. Cheap. Delicious.. My girlfriend and I have been eating at this restaurant for over a year now. We love it. The food is great, cheap and we're always served quick.

Terrible-don't bother. My partner and I went here the other night, was very excited after reading reviews. We ordered to very simple dishes, chicken terriaki and noodle soup....this took almost an hour and a half! There were only 5 other tables when we arrived. 7 people came, ate and left and we still hadn't been served, despite some of these people ordering the same dishes as us! Perhaps they do not like 'certain' people....?
When the food finally did come, there was no apology, it was also quite average...and I am not just saying this because we had to wait so long...the food is nothing special.
Overall, a very disappointing evening...

Loved it used to live around the corner, very fresh and excellent service!

Entice Murrumbeena. Good experience with a very helpful, pleasant waitress named Heidi. Food was tasty with generous serves. Ordered side dish which really wasnt necessary unlike some places where a complete dish is not presented. Plenty of parking in the station carpark opposite restaurant. Good to support a fairly new local business.

-----28 Nov, 2011-----

Choose carefully. We enjoyed the $30 banquet for 4 people. However, decided to have another dish the eye fillet sizzling platter. What a mistake. It was tough, chewy and indeible. When we complained pleasantly to female manager and refused to pay for a dish we couldnt eat.. She was rude and unsympathic and refused to accept our criticism. People on another table heard our complaint and said they also complained about the calamari which was tough but no joy there either. Pity because we wont go again. She lost 4 customers and possibly the other 3 as well. Waiting staff were lovely.

Average Japanese food. I think my expectations for this restaurant was too high following reading the other reviews. We had the banquet and didn't think the food was that special. The presentation of the sushi and sashimi on a sushi boat was nice, but the miso soup, Yakima soba and fried chicken were all to salty for our liking. The service was good though. We have been to Japan previously and this food is more like Japanese food for westerners.

If only all local Japanese restos are like this... I didn't have high expectations when a friend invited me try her local Japanese izakaya. But I was pleasantly surprised by the gutsy miso soup, refreshing prawn salad and the flavorsome gyoza. I also the beef soba noodles - good "bite" to the soba and not oily - which was really filling I even had some to take away. This ain't anywhere near my 'hood, but it's almost worth the trip.

MEGA LIKE!. This place certainly doesn't look like much from the outside but WOW. The food is AMAZING and wonderful value. The service is good, but the waitresses aren't too good with english and there's usually not enough of them. The decor is nice but slightly tacky. Still, all up a really wonderful place to go.

I highly reccomend getting a plate of their gyoza, a serve of vegetable tempura and their bento box.

Year of the Ox Tongue. Nagoya is comparable to many of the suburban Japanese venues you'll discover, with its slightly dated pine tables & chairs and minimalist Japanese décor. The menu includes a nice representation of sushi, sashimi and hand rolls, alongside a broad range of cooked fare.

We commenced with a main size sashimi, which whilst very fresh, was sliced a tad thick for my liking. Salmon was the dominant fish on the plate, with only a sampling of tuna and kingfish, and it wasn't the prettiest arrangement of sashimi I'd encountered. A serve of unagi sushi (grilled eel) was very tasty, even if it was a challenge to pick up with chopsticks.

Moving onto the cooked dishes, my partner wasn't thrilled with her miso soup, however the gyoza were a very nice interpretation, comprising a thin golden exterior and a light, tasty pork filling. A serve of beef tataki was very good, and the gyu tan (grilled ox tongue) and hotate yaki (braised scallops in garlic butter) both rated highly.

The pricing at Nagoya is fairly modest, and the overall quality of food served up is pretty decent for a local venue. The service on the night wasn't fabulous, and appeared to be struggling to cope, which is a concern when the place wasn't at capacity. Acquiring the elusive ice bucket also proved particularly challenging...

What a good place. I thought nothing special on Glen Huntley Road near the station as it look like a dead street. I drove pass this Japanese Restaurant and found my interest and decided to have a try.

Small, but full of people. Poor waitress had to wear a traditional Kimono on a hot summer day and worked all by herself. But, the service was pleasant.

Food was fantastic yummy. Ordered the Tataki Beef, Sashimi and Bento with famous Sapporo beers. Fresh, tasty and authentic. Love it, luckily to found another authentic Japanese Food.
