Awesome..traditional food.. great atmosphere..a must place to eat
If you think you've found a better greek restaurant in Melbourne you better not drive home because you must be higher than willie nelson on 4th July
Food was fabulous, service polite and attentive.
Mothers Day special perfect and well priced! 😃
Food was traditional Greek and have always had a great meal. Service is great and drinks selection caters for everyone. Bravo
Jim and Effie are great hosts, and the food is exceptional.
We had the banquet. Absolutely delicious. Couldn't fit another morsel in
Yummmmy!!!! Can't wait to visit!!! We'll bring the Papas Clan for some amazing Greek! xxx
Best Greek tavern in Melbourne! Eyez loves its , all da time , farken :)
The Best Greek restaurant in Melbourne!!!!!
Authentic Greek great atmosphere fantastic service no wonder it's so popular!
Years ago, this place used to be what was then, my favourite Greek restaurant in Melbourne, called Dips. Now it's replaced with That Greek Tavern, and I thought I'd give it a try and see what it's like there now as a whole new place. The aesthetics are the same for the most part, though freshened up a lot, and nice and clean. It's inviting and the staff greet you warmly and take you to your table promptly.
The menu is fairly extensive for entrees, with the mains a little bit more limited. A lot of meat platters and the usual fare. Prices seem a bit steep, but when you see the food come out, you know you're getting value.
I had the Whitebait for my entree and they were really good. There are heaps, so you could easily share them. I shared the chicken platter for main, and I have never, ever had chicken so succulent before. It was sooooo good, that there was not a shred caught between my teeth anywhere (I had no other use for my straw like I usually do elsewhere, lol). It was so moist and tender and cooked perfectly in a beautiful marinade. The others had lamb and said it was perfect and not in the least fatty. We shared a bowl of chips for the table (four of us) and it was ample.
The service was friendly, and the food came out fast. The music gave the night a nice atmosphere and yes, there's value for money. Would I come back again and recommend it to people? You bet. It'd be good for mid size groups of people or even for parties of two-four. Parking is easy and if you love Greek food, I'm sure you'll love it here too!
Friendly staff and great food every time
Very delicious dishes, generous portions, great ambience with nice music. Didn't have any room for yummy desserts unfortunately. Highly recommended for Greek food lovers
Solid 4 star restaurant!! Mixed platter for four is reasonably priced. The salad had flavour and was enjoyable, dips were amazing. The service was great and they gave off that family vibe I would recommend that if you love Greek food you must try this tavern.
Came here on a Saturday night with friends eager to get into a mix platter 🙂
We ordered the the spicy feta dip which was tasty and the eggplant dip which wasn’t as Smokey as most eggplant dips. Both dips were served with some oily but delicious bread.
We ordered the mix platter that came with lamb, chicken, cutlets and meatballs.
Other than the chicken being a dry the rest was delicious and the lamb was phenomenal ! Crispy as hell on the other and juicy in the inside.
The service was very friendly and attentive and the food came out super quick!
Would definitely come here again.

I have been feeling under the weather lately, and been coughing like crazy! I'm still amazed by how much mucus my body can produce. If there's one advice I can give you guys, it's don't exercise when you're not feeling well! Early last week, I met up with a friend to play table tennis. I got an amazing cardio workout that night, but boy have I paid for it since. My friend is a pretty 'careful with his money' type of guy, so he's always looking for bang for buck places to eat. Surprisingly his track record with food recommendations hasn't been too bad! Thankfully on this particular night I was introduced by him to That Greek Tavern, and I thoroughly enjoyed this meal.
We had the $35pp banquet and as always it was scrumptious. The entrees included mixed dips, pita, saganaki and sausage and the main was Greek salad and mixed meats. The food was fresh and authentic. We will keep coming back!
Been here a number of times and it never disappoints. Turning into a personal favourite as far as Greek places go.
I usually tend to end up going with the meat platter. The beetroot salad as a side makes for an excellent accompaniment.
The dolmades are a little small and served cold (my preference is hot), but they are pretty good regardless.
Service is friendly and the meals come out promptly.
Love this place. This fantastically authentic Greek restaurant provides a warm and friendly environment with great food. Everything we tried was fantastic and served super quickly. The meat platter for 2 was big enough for 3 with the lamb cutlets being our favourite. Finished off with Greek coffee we all left full and happy. Definitely recommend and will be back.
Came for dinner with a group of friends, we all ordered the set menu number 1 which was more than enough for us all (and then some, so much extra leftover we had to take it home as the meat was barely touched!)... really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, and the assortment of mezze offered, we ordered some extra octopodi and calamari but probably didn’t need it in the end as we didn’t end up finishing everything... and there were 8 of us. All the dishes were really nice and coffees and sweets at the end of the meal included in the banquet were a nice compliment.
Lovely. Yes. Great. This is a tasty Greek restaurant. It takes me back to my time in Mykonos. Amazing pita bread and home made dips. You can taste the difference when they are homemade. The whole snapper was awesome. So tasty and the chips were golden brown. The blue eye fillet was tasty. It was on the larger size and the Greek salad was authentic. Pls come and visit and try. μπράβο !! Well done.
I went to dinner on a Friday night on my friends recommendation very cosy place the staff are very attentive so we ordered a set menu OMG I can't believe how much food came out for only two of us The Meat platter was amazing & they even serve Greek beer 10/10
Best chicken I've ever had, succulent and juicy and full of flavour.
Nicest waitresses extremely welcoming and professional.
Best Greek salad
This tavern has been my regular place for meat n dips. Love their food, ambience and friendly service. Often this place leaves a good impression to my guests from overseas. Kudos to the owner for having a well trained team and of course well done to the team that work here.
Decently priced food with big portions and the service was good too. I wouldn't say the food was the most amazing Greek food, but still decent.

Came here for a dinner with my father. Got a sharing platter as well as some entrees. There was so much meat! Had to take half of it home! Really enjoyed the meal. Juicy and flavorsome meat :)
My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant for the second time last night and again we loved it! Delicious, traditional and well priced Greek food with good sized servings. Everything tasted fresh and the meats were succulent and so yummy! Great atmosphere and the service was super friendly and efficient by what looks like a family run restaurant... Highly recommend for couples or even for large groups but make sure you go with an appetite as the servings really are quite generous...
Words can't describe how much I love this place. Whenever I go, I order the meat banquet. We never get through the food and so they give you takeaway containers. Really nice and traditional Greek food.
Wow!! The amount of food on platters is huge for 2 people. The lamb was seasoned really well and had heaps of flavour. Octopus was cooked well and the lemon juice dressing was superb. Service was ok but a little relaxed. Will return, pretty good though.
Well you won't be disappointed.
I have been frequenting this Resturant for 25+ years. Originally Dips Tavern; an outstanding reliable suburban Greek feed. Regrettably there was a few bad and unreliable years 😩 Now "That Greek Tavern" is very reliable with good customer service. Be careful what you order because the banquet it huge and often waisted. We now start with mixed dips, pita, octopus, saganaki and salad which are our personal favorites... Yummo... Then we wait to see how much more you can fit in.. Their Gyros and calamari are outstanding. The Moussaka is also great.. Chips, crisp and perfect. Food is always fresh and hot. It comes out so fast you think they must already know what you are going to order lol. The wait staff particularly Manny are terrific, swift and alway watching over you.. Thank you and Thanks Manny...
Not cheap but nothing is anymore..
I suggest not eating for a whole day prior to dining in at That Greek Tavern on Malvern Road.
The food at this restaurant is not only tasty and authentic but incredibly filling. I have only ever shared my dining experience at this Greek restaurant in a romantic date setting. Both times I have ordered the Set Menu 1 to share.
The entrees are almost a meal in itself. Expect to sample saganaki, pita bread with mixed dips, continental sausages, marinated olives and chilli, dolmades and pickled red capsicum. Following on from this entree feast, is the rather large mixed meat platter with an accompanying Greek side salad. It is near impossible to finish all of this in one sitting, so feel free to ask the wait staff for a doggy bag which they happily provide at no extra charge.
The desserts do vary but are always delightful. My favourite is the Turkish Delight, followed by the Custard Cake and traditional Baklava.
Whilst you may find yourself waddling out of the restaurant by the end of your feast, be assured that you get good value for money.
Agree with other posts. The meat platter to share is great but huge. I would order for 3 if there were 5 people and add a couple of salads. Very friendly and efficient staff too. Didn't have room for desserts.
Ordered the meat platter to share between two people. My gosh it was a lot of food. We didn't manage to finish it and we left really full. The meats were well cooked, tender and very flavourful. Only downside was that everything was a bit too greasy. The ambience was rather casual. It seems very family-friendly, but probably not the most romantic!
Tonight we ate at that greek tavern food and service was excellent, waiter manny is the best
We had a mixed meat grill with dips and it was beautiful, especially with a glass of nice red wine. thanks guys, Keep up the good food.
Excellent local Greek restaurant. We have ordered takeaway many times before but have also fined. The dining experience is good, tables are small & cramped but service is great & food delicious. Standard pita, bread, olives & lamb are amazing, Greek salad has dill which is a nice addition. Last time we got the mixed grill platter but the 3 of us could not finish it! Some of the meats were seemed pre-cooked which was disappointing but the spit meats were sensational.
Always tasty and fresh food. Friendly and efficient service. The banquets are generous and consist of excellent varieties, especially the seafood one. All meats are cooked to perfection to maximum level of juicy tenderness. The entrees and salads are all tasty and fresh. Home made dips and warm flat bread are unbelievable. A special mention to the prawns- tender and juicy with a squeeze of lemon, they melt in your mouth! Been here with family several times for special occasions- a welcoming and hearty food experience every time.
Before it is a fantastic Greek restaurant with friendly staff and tasty food. But after the owner changed, I felt the food is not delicious as before. But I still love the dip and entries there. Small serve but quite nice
Love this place. Great food, really generous servings when ordering the platters, and excellent service. This has been our go-to Greek restaurant for years and we don't see that changing. Great for big get togethers.
Lovely food. Quick service, amazing quality. Been here 3 Times and always been awesome. Would totally recommend. Lamb Gyros is a must and the Saganaki
Superb Greek food with all the usual selections. Nicely prepared and presented. Good atmosphere. Good service. Reasonably priced. Can be a bit noisy. Good for a group get together.
This is one of Melbourne's best. A traditional take on Greek food, with an amazing atmosphere. High quality food and drinks at reasonable prices. I highly recommend.
This is our local Greek restaurant and it NEVER lets us down every time we go. Highly recommend, food is delicious and full of flavour and service is fantastic!!
Best gyros I've had, and so well priced.
I recently visited this tavern after seeing and hearing all the delightful reviews. I wanted to see if it lived up to all it's hype..... I did. I ordered the set menu #2 for 10 of us and boy was it filling. The food was fresh and packed full of flavour. My most enjoyed part of the three course meal was the seafood personally, but everything was very good. Staff was very friendly and attentive( our waiter named Greg). Best Greek food in a long time for me.
Delicious!. Fantastic food, very generous portions and fantastic service! All round great dining experience will definitely be going back!
So sorry I have not discovered this gem earlier. We enjoyed mixed dips and calamari with Greek salad, it was all fresh, delish and I recommend. Sadly, it was pretty much patron free, so rock on down.
Just the right amount of everything! Fast, friendly service, relaxed atmosphere but most importantly, delicious food! The meat platter was so full of flavour, tender and satisfying and the sides were fresh and tasty! Will certainly be heading back for another feast soon!

+4.5
Great (!!) Greek food. Ordered the set menu for 2 and was definately worth the $45.00 each. 3 different entrees, bread and dips, meat platter and two deserts each. Food was delicious but there was no way 2 people could get through the amount the brought out. Great place, nice waiters- well worth it.
Spectacular .. Only word I can think of
I came down to eat with the family, the food is magnificent, plates and cutlery is spotless, the service is great and it has the perfect atmosphere. I couldn't ask for more, and for the first time my 8 year old son demolished his plate.
Have wanted to try this place for ages now and decided to order take away on a whim. I ordered the chicken wrap, hubby ordered the lamb wrap. They were absolutely delicious. One of the best we have both tried! Beautifully cooked, tasty and reasonably priced. Can't wait to dine in here and sample the rest of the menu.
Really high quality Greek food. They have lamb and chicken spit going with tender and tasty meat. We had the grilled calamari, some dips and a mixed meat platter with a salad. It was all full of flavour and servings are huge, - they even let you take the leftovers home. Pretty simple drinks list, though BYO is the way to go with corkage at just $5. Service was prompt and friendly and the fit out is modern and clean. We were really impressed and will definitely return!
Fantastic. Best Greek food had in ages. Good servings, good service & friendly staff. I will return.
Greek History. This is a terrific Greek restaurant. Took the family last Saturday for the first time and I thought it was excellent. It puts a lot of the competition in Richmond to shame. Generous serves and reasonably priced. Most significantly a cut above the rest in terms of quality while still pretty 'safe'.
Amazing. Quality traditional greek food, lots of food for my family of 5, not one fault all was delicious and was definitely worth the 30 minute drive and will be back very soon !
SO MANY FOODS!. This place use to be our local, even though it is no longer so local, it is still the only greek place I would dine at.
The dips are always fantastic and the discounted set menu on a sunday night is cheap and provides a massive quantity of food, which is very important in my opinion. =P
Great staff also.
Nice food......plenty of food...almost too much! ......we all enjoyed the night.
Amazing Food. Love this place! Hubby and I went for dinner a few weeks back and everything was perfect from start to finish. Firstly service was wonderful. Staff friendly and helpful. Secondly the meals were amazing! Food was fresh, authentic and full of flavor. We started with a shared dip selection, then a shared meat platter. The meat was tender and full of flavor. We ended with the custard cake that was to die 4.... We are so impressed that we are organising a group to go there as we had the best time ever!
Great fresh food, very reasonably priced. Service was ok, definitely not as bad as described by previous reviews
Must try. I've tried out this greek tavern with my family. I went on a Sunday and ordered the special set menu. the food was amazing we had to take the rest home because there was plenty of food. the service was amazing I will definitely be comming again.
Great value !. This is really a great place that provides delicious greek food at very reasonable prices! Everything we ordered (Grilled Calamari. Fish of the day, Meat Platter, Greek Salad, Stuffed Capsicum, Fried Calamari) was extremely tasty and fresh. Huge portions as well (I recommend sharing unless you are a big eater!) Desserts (Rice Pudding and Custard Cake) were yummy too.
Decor and atmosphere were nice too!
While food was fantastic service on the contrary turned to be a bit disappointing. They were indeed friendly, but they forgot our pita bread, slow to clear the table up when we had finished, and we had to ask for a dessert list... No major dramas, we had a great time anyway !
.
I like the decor (the booths mainly), although the fresh (read uncooked) meat display facing the front dining room can only be described as a little odd. I'm guessing they're going for a 'look at the freshness of our produce' motif, but to me it feels like my local butcher added a dining room to the shop.
We tried the $30 set menu which was a lot of food. Typical of the generosity of Greek hospitality. Food is good quality, particularly the starters. I found the meat to be generally tasty but standard Greek taverna fare. It is better than most though.
The wine list had some quality options but these were mostly at the $60+ price points. As is typical with cheaper wine price points at most restaurants, wines below $50 represented poor value. BYO wine is a good option here.
Recommended.
This is restaurant can be depended on for reliable good quality Greek food. It's not fantastic but the food is satisfying. Some of the meals are very large. For example one order of the open souvlaki is enough for two people.
Delicious, good evening out. Love the booths and the food.
Lamb Souvlaki was delicious, I would advise one between two or even between three if having appetisers.
Also had dips with pita bread, saganaki and greek salad which were all really good.
Will return.
Great restaurant!. Went on a weeknight to this restaurant, was a quiet night, and the waiters were very attentive, friendly and helpful.
Good layout, nice and spacious. We had the banquet and it was very reasonably priced with alot of food, alot of meat! As you would expect with a Greek restaurant. The food is also of a good quality.
I really recommend this restaurant.
Only ever had takeaway from the tavern. Great souvlakis and chips. Inside looks lovely and I'm sure I'll get a group together one night for a sit in. Staff are very friendly. Be warned, the souvlakis are massive, so make sure you're hungry!!
Be Hungry!. We went here for Saturday dinner, and the food and service were both great!
The saganaki is the best in town, i'd highly recommend it, and the open gyros souvlaki was almost too big for one person to eat! ...okay, it is actually is probably too big for one normal healthy person to eat, but everything on the plate was so tasty that I couldn't help myself but to finish it!
Highly recommend this place... the menu is probably just a little more expensive than your run of the mill Greek restaurant, but the serves are generous and quality is great. It also looked like they have a great midweek special for $30 a head which sounded like great value.
Reliably standard Greek eats. In a city boasting a few great Greek restaurants, I can't really give this a higher rating than 'good'. The set menu seemed pretty standard fare (lots of dips followed by lots of meat) so I opted for the stuffed capsicum. It was...good. Lashings of oil on everything, which I tried to dodge, and a bit too salty - but enjoyable enough. Those around me who went with the set menu seemed pretty impressed with the food quality and volume. Service was a tad haphazard, with drinks being forgotten, dirty plates left on the table and food from the set menu plonked down without explanation. I'm not from this side of town, so this could be an outstanding option for the Easties as far as I know. I'd be more inclined to stick closer to the city for my Greek food, though.
Great food very nice service and you feel very welcomed when you walk in I would definitely go there again
Great tasty Greek food!! We always get the banquet for 2 ! it's great value and chicken gyro is sweet, moist and delicious!! Beautifully marinated!!! We love this place just wish it was open earlier so that we could have a earlier dinner with kids or a take away souvlaki after school!!! Very friendly staff!!
Whenever I come back to Melbourne, I always stop by That Greek Tavern and have the dips, salad, tsaganaki, meat platter and of course Greek beer :) You gotta try this place, great home cooked Greek food.
I really like this restaurant and I have thought, everytime, that the service was wonderful, warm and friendly!
