New Royal Garden(ChuanXiBaZi) had transformed from Yum-Cha dumplings into Chinese Hot Pot (Original West Sichuan cuisine). Highlight recommendations are Wagyu beef, own-brand wine(Chuan Xi Xiao Jiu), deep fried pork, lamb, fresh bean curd, yummy Royal Vegetable and iced herbal drinks.

Tried NRG for yumcha the first time today and definitely will be returning soon. The service was efficient, a good selection of dim sum, not too pricey. Food was tasty and nothing we tried was below the standard of what we usually would get in the city or Doncaster. Great that we found a yum cha place closer to home!

Have been going to this restaurant for years for Yum Cha. Always enjoy the varieties they have, probably one of the best in south-eastern suburbs. The owner comes around to ensure everything is ok and that makes us feel welcome. Could suggest the ladies pushing the trolleys (yum cha) could smile a bit more and be more patient. But overall an enjoyable place to have yum cha!

Your regular yumcha fare, you've got all the favourites, some good some bad. The positives are that the dim sum are large and plump with filling, dishes with prawns had a nice bouncy consistency. Enjoyed the pork dishes also such as their siu mai. A favourite of mine was the fried taro puff with prawns, crisp and still hot.

What we didn't enjoy was that a few of our dim sum wrappers just fell apart such as everyone's favourite har gao. Nothing worse than picking up the pieces. The chicken feet were a bit one dimensional, some chilli or black bean would have made it nicer.

Overall great ambience, not the first time and won't be the last. Pricing was great, we spent around $30 per person and were absolutely stuffed. Can't say I remember the dinner experience here but it was decent. As I walk out I see someone with golden custard buns. Damn I always forget to get them!

Came here Saturday night, ordered beef brisket Claypot and bean curd with seafood clayton with rice. Took around 8 mins for the waiter to give us menus and the wait time for the dishes was longer than usual as it was a busy night with several other large tables. It was a bit disturbing to see an ant on the dish after we finished the prawn crackers though. Taste of both claytpots where very nice, flavours as I like them to be and the two of us finished all of course we were super full. Had water melon and dessert to finish off with. Generally flavours of dishes is very good here, service today was not as good though.

FAST Food Review: New Royal Garden in Mount Waverley

FOOD: Yum Cha here is fabulous with a good range including Ginger Prawn Dumplings, Chive Dumplings, Egg Tarts, Fried Radish Cake, BBQ Pork Buns, Eggplant with Tofu, Yam Cake, Pork Spare Ribs and if you are adventurous Braised Chicken Feet. Dinner menu is pretty good too. - 4.5/5

AMBIENCE: Even when it’s busy you feel there is ample room for you to have your own space and not overly noisy that you can still have a quality conversation with your family or guests. - 4/5

SERVICE: Best Service I have experienced at a Yum Cha restaurant, which usually does not prioritise polite service. From the Manager to the Staff, they are all very courteous and friendly. - 4.5/5

TOTAL: 13/5

Top Tip: Request the dishes you want so you don’t have to wait for the specific carts to arrive, which could take awhile. Also book ahead on the weekend so you don’t have to queue up.

The last time I came here was many years ago and then the yum cha was ok but not excellent. The place was fairly unclean and a little run down.I went back today for yum cha and the improvements are outstanding: very busy but clean, pleasant ambience, prompt and kind service and really nice food, with a proper variety. I was certainly impressed and I will go back very soon. I would advise to book, to avoid queing for a while.

Best yum cha in the area!! Good variety of food, Very friendly staff and can speak English, they care if you liked the food always checking up on you.

At other yum cha places I have never received such good service like here, and because I can’t speak their language sometimes they can be really aggressive and rude.

If I was to be really picky the walls and window sills were a bit dirty. Not nice sitting next to a dead fly and some spider webs

Have been coming back to this yum-cha place for ages now. Have seen business slow over the recently years but honestly, the flavours of the dishes here are usually pretty good! Service can sometimes be a little hit and miss but the delicious steamed har gao (prawn dim sum) and fried ham sui gok (the little fried football looking ones!!!) are so incredible!

A long standing yum cha establishment, New Royal Garden does a good job of delivering consistent service and har gao dumplings. Food overall is pretty good; dumplings aren't oversteamed and everything seasoned well. The interiors could do a make over though.

A great location in this area and it is a very old restaurant. Food is okay , seafood is fine, crab is very good but expensive ~ . Service here is okay, hard to get attention. Better to have a Reno here.

Been here a couple of times, for Yum Cha and for dinner. Food is pretty good overall, Yum Cha dishes are pretty nice, standard siu mai, vermicelli rice rolls, spare ribs are pretty good. Winner is the large sesame ball without the red bean paste, generally don't eat that type of dish but its really good here. They often run out of it during service because it is so popular. Atmosphere is good, typical yum cha feel. Service is nice too.

UPDATE:  earlier in the week 5x Whippeteers enjoyed $200 of Mud Crab.  Why so expensive?  Our host and personal friend, head chef Mr Sit explained that it is due to heavy overseas demand.

But, it was SOOOO good.

Also, new to the menu is a Szechuan prawn dish.  Hot and delicious.  Recommended.

Below is our original review from about 9months ago...

Going back to The New Royal Garden today felt like going home...and back to this Whips childhood (๑´ڡ`๑)

This is where to go when you have guests with a Western palate, altho there is plenty of authentic food on the menu.  For us it's an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

We were greeted by the head Chef Mr Sit, lovely man & master chef.
He came and sat with us, helped us order then sent over a complimentary dish of roast BBQ pork.

We ordered:

Shiraz
Corn chicken soup
Peking duck
Garlic rib eye fillet with garlic sauce
Sweet &, Sour pork (to relive childhood memories)
Strawberries with ice cream
Banana fritter

All expertly cooked. The dishes came out ninja quick.

Quiet. Comfortable. Homely. Yes, like going home.

Ps we went to the Chili festival today so this Whip ate a Carolina Reaper chili with dinner tonight. Yes, it was hot Lol.

Good quality yum cha! I love their dumplings, and the prices are decent. The owner/manager (not sure which, but definitely the boss) is also very much a hard worker and can be seen serving customers and cleaning up tables himself. I appreciate seeing that.

The seaweed prawn fritters were a bit salty, but the rest of our dishes - fried wantons, egg tarts, chive dumplings, prawn dumplings, cheong fun and chicken buns were pretty good. Typical yum cha restaurant with wait staff bustling about and clearing your plates/baskets as soon as they see them emptied.

Delicious and reasonably priced yum cha. Had gau is succulent and flavoursome. Had to have one before I could take a photo as you can see. Salt and pepper deep fried white bait is crunchy and fried and seasoned to perfection. Tau fu fah is silky smooth and slides down your throat as a perfect finish to a great yum cha. Highly recommended.

Went here for yumcha on a whim on Saturday. What a splendid choice! Able to easily obtain a seat and the food was piping hot. Had various choices such as siew mai, har gau, yu chi gau, chicken feet, ham sui kok, and various others. Dan tart was nice and the manager brought out a nice big tray of them. Had no issues with any of the food and quite full afterwards. The price was reasonable for yum cha as well.

Can't begin to say how excellent the portion sizes are. For what you pay, it is so generous. I had the pork with chili sauce. It came with mixed vegetables as well. It was so delicious. Writing this now, makes me remember how happy I was when eating this dish. Highly recommend this place. They also gave us a big bag of free prawn crackers as well.

THE BEST SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD AT A CHINESE RESTAURANT.
The food was amazing, the staff was amazing they all had the best personality. One of the waiters took his time out to teach me how use the spoon and fork to pick things up. But the best customer service of all is that by the end of our lovely meal he took the time out to make my friend and I a flower from a napkin. Thankyou so much we will definitely be coming back.

Best Cantonese in the SE suburbs. I will preface this by saying that I absolutely love Cantonese Chinese food - it is by far my favourite cuisine and I have sampled it at many many restaurants over the years in Australia and in Asia. One might say I'm addicted to it.

Living in Glen Waverley for years there is a broad array of Asian restaurants so competition is tough, but this is by far my favourite, not just in the area, but one of the best this side of Melbourne.

In my opinion, New Royal Garden ranks 3rd after Silks and Red Emperor (yes, I didn't include Flower Drum here because I think it is pretentious, crap, bastardised food).

I've been here many times and my favourite dishes are the Peking Duck skin rolls, Cantonese Fillet Steak / Fillet Steak with garlic shavings and steamed snow peas, chilli mud crab, crispy skin chicken, Singapore Noodles, the very tasty spring rolls and the broad array of dim sum.

I've only had Yum Cha here once which was good, but in my opinion the dinners (esp. the beef fillet) are better.

Contrary to some of the below reviews, I received excellent service from the first day I walked in here and have continued to do so each time from all the staff.

The prices are slightly higher than other Chinese restaurants at around $30-40pp for a few dishes and appetizers to share (less if in a group), but still well-worth the money and less than half the price of the abovementioned two of which I don't think are far ahead.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves traditional Chinese food - the food is excellent, staff friendly and it has a nice and welcoming traditional ambiance. I'd rate it at least 85%.

Food OK, Service average. Had Yum Cha. Very busy, and although we'd booked, had to wait anyway.

We were constantly being offered food (a good thing!) but the service staff struggle badly with English. They would repeat the name of the item, but any question about it (What kind of meat? What is that sauce? Does this contain nuts?) left them bewildered.

I don't expect flawless English, but even a little would be nice. We were hardly the only non-Chinese speaking table in the restaurant, either.

Having said that, the food was nice. The Pork Ribs are mostly gristle, though... maybe give them a miss. Seafood was good, dumplings nice, pork buns a highlight.

Yummy Cha. If you have never been to Yum Cha, you should muster up the courage to try it.

You will encounter big crowds, you will encounter lots of noise and you will likely be asked to leave once your meal is finished. Feels a bit weird, but I'm told it's normal behaviour.

Service: Pretty Good
Food: Pretty Amazing
Prices: Reasonable
Authenticity: Not comparable to Asia, but no Passport required!
Yam Cha Dumpling Factor: 6 Prawn Dumplings out of 8

Among the massive number of Yum Cha experiences this is definitely in the top half.

Went to big family dinner and tried a large amount of dishes. All were very good. Yam duck was great with the sauce, though quite dry without. Chicken dishes were great and tasty with ginger and chili, packed a punch. Prawn tofu was good, as were the pork and vegetables. Great for a family feast or special occasion. Service was reasonable, although it took them a very long time to clear the table before we had dessert. All in all, one of the best Chinese dinners I've had in Melbourne so far

Maybe I'm finally willing to make the call and say it's surpassed childhood favourite Imperial Kingdom? The lobster was awesome and all of the other small dishes we got hit the spot too. Service is better when you have Chinese speakers on hand.

Real Chinese. The second time we have visited this great restaurant (although the last time was 4 years ago).
Very Chinese in appearance with a great selection of menu choices which do not appear to be overly 'anglicised'. We enjoyed the great Won Tons and Dim Sims to whet the appetite, then soups and a variety of mains. The salted chillie Pork was moist and tasty with a great crispy texture, the scallops tasted fresh and the 2 beef dishes were again beautifully cooked.
The service was typically Chinese. Quick enough but rough around the edges.
We think possibly not as good as a few years ago (but how many places are?) but we will revisit this one again.
Good value, real food. 7 out of 10, would be higher if the service were just that bit better.

Good Yum Cha, quality was decent. There could of been a bit more variety with the trolleys going around though, we were offered alot of fried dishes and not as many steamed. Plenty of parking around so its our go to yum cha if we have people coming in different cars.

We came here for lunch on boxing day. The place was full and we were lucky we made an earlier reservation. Out of the dishes we ordered, pecking duck was good though it was less crispier but more meatier. Special fried rice was really good. The diced chicken fried rice and singapore fried noodles could have been prepared in a better way in my view. The portion sizes of all were quite generous. The place had nice ambience and seating. Parking was ample.

Very good place, food is tasty and always cooked well. When dining inside they are usually very attentive as they seem to want to give you a full service. Takeaway orders are generously sized and feels good value. I'm only sad they are closed for renovations because I don't know anywhere that has the quality of this place.

The food is awesome, very good indeed. Price is pretty standard for yum cha too, so not too expensive. The egg tarts are amazing! And the chicken feet was nice as as well (if you're scared to eat chicken feet, just give it a shot, I'm an Australian and I have never regretted my first taste). Service is normal for a yum cha, actually probably a bit better than usual. If you're used to Western dining, you'll find the service bad - but believe me, there is much worse.

Pricey but very good chinese cuisine. The salt and pepper crab was flavoursome and the crab was fresh. Lobster in garlic ginger sauce and noodle base was also good. The surprise dish was the mouth watering chicken. Flavour was spot on. Friendly customer service.

My goto Chinese restaurant, I've been going here for over 30 years and still love it. Very friendly staff some of whom I've know all that time. 3 seatings of Yum Cha and a fantastic a la carte menu, which includes two of my favourite meats Emu and Crocodile. They also sell all the usually BBQed meat by the kilo. Being non Asian, but willing to try new and exotic foods, I often tell the waiter what meat I'd like and let them decide how it is prepared (ie off the menu, well the English one at least) and I've never been disappointed.
