Review New Royal Garden - Glen Waverley

Mr T
Good Yum Cha, quality was decent. There could of been a bit more variety with the trolleys going around though, we were offered alot of fried dishes and not as many steamed. Plenty of parking around so its our go to yum cha if we have people coming in different cars.

I am really conflicted about this place. Lovely venue, friendly wait and serving staff, absolutely delicious food and the experience of cooking your own hotpot with fresh ingredients was great. What was wrong you ask? When my 80yr old father went to pay (he insisted) the woman (I can't bring myself to call her a lady) sensed an opportunity to take advantage of an old man. Luckily I pushed him to tell me how much the dinner for 3 was. When he showed me the receipt, she had charged him for the table with 6 people next to us. Easy mistake right? Well he queried her three times before paying as he thought it was high, and she told him 3 times it was because of Chinese New Year fixed price of $55 per head. I talked to the excellent young waiter who had served us and he was shocked and immediately had her rectify the situation. She refused to credit the amount back to my dad's credit card (I assume as this would show up in the statements and be queried by management) and paid the refund in cash. The grand total of this was over $70 difference, nearly double the actual price of approx $80. She refused to make eye contact and was very surly at having been caught out. If the owners or management wish to contact me to discuss and get more information please let me know. Be wary when paying and triple check your receipts. Such a shame as I would love to have this awesome food and convenient location as a regular eatery.

Very delicious and flavourful dim sum.

We came here for lunch on boxing day. The place was full and we were lucky we made an earlier reservation. Out of the dishes we ordered, pecking duck was good though it was less crispier but more meatier. Special fried rice was really good. The diced chicken fried rice and singapore fried noodles could have been prepared in a better way in my view. The portion sizes of all were quite generous. The place had nice ambience and seating. Parking was ample.

Very good place, food is tasty and always cooked well. When dining inside they are usually very attentive as they seem to want to give you a full service. Takeaway orders are generously sized and feels good value. I'm only sad they are closed for renovations because I don't know anywhere that has the quality of this place.

The food is awesome, very good indeed. Price is pretty standard for yum cha too, so not too expensive. The egg tarts are amazing! And the chicken feet was nice as as well (if you're scared to eat chicken feet, just give it a shot, I'm an Australian and I have never regretted my first taste). Service is normal for a yum cha, actually probably a bit better than usual. If you're used to Western dining, you'll find the service bad - but believe me, there is much worse.

Pricey but very good chinese cuisine. The salt and pepper crab was flavoursome and the crab was fresh. Lobster in garlic ginger sauce and noodle base was also good. The surprise dish was the mouth watering chicken. Flavour was spot on. Friendly customer service.

My goto Chinese restaurant, I've been going here for over 30 years and still love it. Very friendly staff some of whom I've know all that time. 3 seatings of Yum Cha and a fantastic a la carte menu, which includes two of my favourite meats Emu and Crocodile. They also sell all the usually BBQed meat by the kilo. Being non Asian, but willing to try new and exotic foods, I often tell the waiter what meat I'd like and let them decide how it is prepared (ie off the menu, well the English one at least) and I've never been disappointed.

Great food. Very authentic Chinese hotpot. The staff are very nice too. Will def revisit.

nice to catch up with friends here.

New Royal Garden(ChuanXiBaZi) had transformed from Yum-Cha dumplings into Chinese Hot Pot (Original West Sichuan cuisine). Highlight recommendations are Wagyu beef, own-brand wine(Chuan Xi Xiao Jiu), deep fried pork, lamb, fresh bean curd, yummy Royal Vegetable and iced herbal drinks.

This place was renovated and recently opened again. We, as long time customers, decided to try it again. ALL NEGATIVE:

1) NO YUM CHA???? This was a top place for it. What is the owner thinking?
2) The lights are shocking: no matter where you sit, long strings of really bright led lights are positioned at eye level, making every customer really uncomfortable.
3) Unbelievable prices! We all know that after a renovation prices go up, but this is ridiculous!
Good bye, New Royal Garden!
Charlie
Awful over salted food. Flavourless and dry. Only came here because I couldn’t get booking else where. Now I know why! Avoid avoid avoid!!!!

Growing up I have always come here and my grandparents now live right opposite.
We have seen this place in its prime, crash down and watched them pick themselves up

The food here since my last visit has gone downhill unfortunately. The service is quite poor but due to convenience we still walk over get the half roast duck. We use to always go here for yum cha but after a terrible experience we have not returned

Tried NRG for yumcha the first time today and definitely will be returning soon. The service was efficient, a good selection of dim sum, not too pricey. Food was tasty and nothing we tried was below the standard of what we usually would get in the city or Doncaster. Great that we found a yum cha place closer to home!

Have been going to this restaurant for years for Yum Cha. Always enjoy the varieties they have, probably one of the best in south-eastern suburbs. The owner comes around to ensure everything is ok and that makes us feel welcome. Could suggest the ladies pushing the trolleys (yum cha) could smile a bit more and be more patient. But overall an enjoyable place to have yum cha!
Mustard
Your regular yumcha fare, you've got all the favourites, some good some bad. The positives are that the dim sum are large and plump with filling, dishes with prawns had a nice bouncy consistency. Enjoyed the pork dishes also such as their siu mai. A favourite of mine was the fried taro puff with prawns, crisp and still hot.

What we didn't enjoy was that a few of our dim sum wrappers just fell apart such as everyone's favourite har gao. Nothing worse than picking up the pieces. The chicken feet were a bit one dimensional, some chilli or black bean would have made it nicer.

Overall great ambience, not the first time and won't be the last. Pricing was great, we spent around $30 per person and were absolutely stuffed. Can't say I remember the dinner experience here but it was decent. As I walk out I see someone with golden custard buns. Damn I always forget to get them!
Willtravelforfood17
The yum cha here is good for students: giant portions and cheap. Unfortunately the quality of the dumplings is not good: the skins are thick and each one that has a prawn filling tastes the same.

Came here Saturday night, ordered beef brisket Claypot and bean curd with seafood clayton with rice. Took around 8 mins for the waiter to give us menus and the wait time for the dishes was longer than usual as it was a busy night with several other large tables. It was a bit disturbing to see an ant on the dish after we finished the prawn crackers though. Taste of both claytpots where very nice, flavours as I like them to be and the two of us finished all of course we were super full. Had water melon and dessert to finish off with. Generally flavours of dishes is very good here, service today was not as good though.

FAST Food Review: New Royal Garden in Mount Waverley

FOOD: Yum Cha here is fabulous with a good range including Ginger Prawn Dumplings, Chive Dumplings, Egg Tarts, Fried Radish Cake, BBQ Pork Buns, Eggplant with Tofu, Yam Cake, Pork Spare Ribs and if you are adventurous Braised Chicken Feet. Dinner menu is pretty good too. - 4.5/5

AMBIENCE: Even when it’s busy you feel there is ample room for you to have your own space and not overly noisy that you can still have a quality conversation with your family or guests. - 4/5

SERVICE: Best Service I have experienced at a Yum Cha restaurant, which usually does not prioritise polite service. From the Manager to the Staff, they are all very courteous and friendly. - 4.5/5

TOTAL: 13/5

Top Tip: Request the dishes you want so you don’t have to wait for the specific carts to arrive, which could take awhile. Also book ahead on the weekend so you don’t have to queue up.

#yum #cha #chinese #syndal #lunch #dinner #fast #food #review #bbq #pork #bun #service #ambience #friendly #ginger #eggplant #radish #tofu #chicken #feet #cake

Cannot remember when was the last time I had yum cha but yesterday proofed to be one of those days where it was quintessential to, with a cup of hot tea on hand. Having never been here before, I booked a few days in advance. However, for those who prefer walk-ins, the waiting time is not long. Service is efficient although I do personally think that there is less variety here compared to other establishments. Overall fare tasted standard to me, bonus points for not feeling the need to rush to finish whilst dining.

Food: All dishes are big in size. Dumplings are overcooked that the skin is soggy amd falls apart. Fried calamari is lukewarm. Some dishes lacked flavour. Har Cheong fan lacks taste, the prawn was hard and the sauce was bland

Ambiance: Typical yumcha place. People talking, carpet floors and dim lighting.

Service: Called to make a booking and very friendly service. Don't expect much. Waiters look like they lacked motivation and frowning. When setting up tables didn't present it well and looked unorganized.

Have to try: Egg tart. Sweet yet savoury.

Points for: average dim sum
Dine Time: Sunday lunch

NRG has been a staple in the SE for decades. You come in for a yum cha fix, and don't expect much else.
At 11.45am, I was seated in the back corner table, behind a large pillar and in between two large round tables. This meant the dim sum trolley couldn't make it to my table, so I had to get up every time. That's if, it did come at all - for the first half hour, only deep fried things arrived.
A little bit of an inconvenience and annoyance, but not everyone will experience that location.
For the older Chinese, it wouldn't be an issue cos they can just order whatever they want straight up from the waiters (I don't speak any Chinese dialect).

Anyway, what this review should be about is the dim sum itself:
All steamed dumplings were steamed to the point that the skin was soggy and either fell off the meat, or got completely stuck to the side of the bamboo tray.
The pork & shrimp siumai was large, plump and pretty tasty though.
The beancurd skin roll fu pei guen had been steamed and set aside, so it was only slightly warm, and had drier skin on the exposed side.
The pork footballs hamsui gok was a bit overfried, and very hollow inside, with a thin layer of filling.
This kind of downward trend continues...maybe I'm being too picky.
The service is what I expect out of this type of establishment...and for those who don't know...don't expect much.
Despite all this, a lot of people still pack the place out, so I can't imagine Zomato having much affect on those who frequent.

The last time I came here was many years ago and then the yum cha was ok but not excellent. The place was fairly unclean and a little run down.I went back today for yum cha and the improvements are outstanding: very busy but clean, pleasant ambience, prompt and kind service and really nice food, with a proper variety. I was certainly impressed and I will go back very soon. I would advise to book, to avoid queing for a while.

14/09/2019 This place was renovated and just re-opened afte a year of renovations. SHOCK! SHOCK! SHOCK! N O Y U M C H A!!!!! I believe the owner has become senile, because this was one of the best yum cha restaurants in Melbourne. The new version is pretending to be luxurious, but if one seat anywhere, a millllllion bright white led lights shine straight in one's eyes. Very annoying. The food is excessively overpriced and the restaurant, on a Saturday lunch, was totally empty. Obviusly so. What a disgrace!
Justin
We love coming here for yum Cha and dinner. The manager ban is an absolute legend. Always really friendly and one of the main reasons we always come back
Michelle
Best yum cha in the area!! Good variety of food, Very friendly staff and can speak English, they care if you liked the food always checking up on you.

At other yum cha places I have never received such good service like here, and because I can’t speak their language sometimes they can be really aggressive and rude.

If I was to be really picky the walls and window sills were a bit dirty. Not nice sitting next to a dead fly and some spider webs
吃吃吃
Expensive, dirty, bad attitude... I can't say anymore....

Have been coming back to this yum-cha place for ages now. Have seen business slow over the recently years but honestly, the flavours of the dishes here are usually pretty good! Service can sometimes be a little hit and miss but the delicious steamed har gao (prawn dim sum) and fried ham sui gok (the little fried football looking ones!!!) are so incredible!
Cynthia Giang
A long standing yum cha establishment, New Royal Garden does a good job of delivering consistent service and har gao dumplings. Food overall is pretty good; dumplings aren't oversteamed and everything seasoned well. The interiors could do a make over though.

My partner says the place looks dingy. I hadn't noticed it until he had pointed it out. Stools and oil cans outside by the front door, watermelons on the ground upon entry, tables and chairs stored right outside under transparent plastic covers right beside windows where it's all visible to guests. All these dingy aspects I had somehow filtered it out automatically, being so used to Asian cheap eats I no longer bat an eyelid nor pay attention to unsightly things. All I care about is price and quantity and quality of food. Their hargows are pretty big. I enjoyed the beef balls and beef tripe. Price wise it's decent considering yum cha is an expensive affair. The younger staffs looked like zombies though, dragging their way across the room, semi slouching without any expression on their faces. If you care about service and atmosphere, forget about this place. But if you're accustomed to"authentic" Chinese restaurants then you'll feel right at home

The best dish we had was the crab noodles. The crabs were huge! Unlike any other I've tasted, these crabs were fresh and very meaty. We were very satisfied with that first dish. The noodles soaked up the essence of crab, paired with the subtle scent of ginger and spring onion, it was perfect. The other dishes were mediocre though, didn't quite match the price tag but I'd return for the crab noodles any day.
Cindy
A great location in this area and it is a very old restaurant. Food is okay , seafood is fine, crab is very good but expensive ~ . Service here is okay, hard to get attention. Better to have a Reno here.

New Owner New Name ... several years ago.

This establishment is the former site of Imperial Kingdom (the brothers moved it to the former Rob's restaurant at the corner of Blackburn Rd & Waverley Rd), still an A+ location, nothing much changed inside out.

Foodwise, above average Chinese food, enjoyable hence we still go there occasionally.

Been here a couple of times, for Yum Cha and for dinner. Food is pretty good overall, Yum Cha dishes are pretty nice, standard siu mai, vermicelli rice rolls, spare ribs are pretty good. Winner is the large sesame ball without the red bean paste, generally don't eat that type of dish but its really good here. They often run out of it during service because it is so popular. Atmosphere is good, typical yum cha feel. Service is nice too.

UPDATE: earlier in the week 5x Whippeteers enjoyed $200 of Mud Crab. Why so expensive? Our host and personal friend, head chef Mr Sit explained that it is due to heavy overseas demand.

But, it was SOOOO good.

Also, new to the menu is a Szechuan prawn dish. Hot and delicious. Recommended.

====================================================================

Below is our original review from about 9months ago...

Going back to The New Royal Garden today felt like going home...and back to this Whips childhood (๑´ڡ`๑)

This is where to go when you have guests with a Western palate, altho there is plenty of authentic food on the menu. For us it's an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

We were greeted by the head Chef Mr Sit, lovely man & master chef.
He came and sat with us, helped us order then sent over a complimentary dish of roast BBQ pork.

We ordered:

Shiraz
Corn chicken soup
Peking duck
Garlic rib eye fillet with garlic sauce
Sweet &, Sour pork (to relive childhood memories)
Strawberries with ice cream
Banana fritter

All expertly cooked. Good quality yum cha! I love their dumplings, and the prices are decent. The owner/manager (not sure which, but definitely the boss) is also very much a hard worker and can be seen serving customers and cleaning up tables himself. I appreciate seeing that.

We used to come quite often but haven't been for over a year. Brought the family for yum cha and was very disappointed. While the steamed dumplings were hot, the various fried offerings were cold. One of the dumplings, the pork and prawns were off.

Haven't been here in years. They apparently have a good yum cha but we're here for dinner. We had the duck slices with snow peas and celery. It was ok. There was a lot of celery. We also had the soft tofu with seafood and mushrooms. Again it was ok not memorable though. We were recommended the chicken ribs with salted egg yolk. Would've liked to taste more of the salted yolk but it was missing. Chicken was well cooked. The final dish was fish fillets in chili sauce. We expected a Szechuan style chili sauce but it was sort of sweet and lots of celery again. Overall it was ok but not memorable.

We are a small family with two young boys dining at this restaurant for the first time. We were eating very 'efficiently' as we know my younger boy would want to leave as soon as he's full. I have been feeding my younger boy whilst my husband was eating at the same time so that the moment my younger son is done, my husband stood up and took him out. The staff did not offer free fruit and dessert (I did not know it is inclusive otherwise we would have asked for them to be served before my husband and my son left). I was eating quickly as I did not want my husband and my son to wait in the car for too long, then one staff asked me if I want the dessert. I replied yes for two (myself and my older boy at the table). We were still having our dessert then another staff came and said 'there are other people waiting outside for the table'. Immediately my older boy who initially said he really like the red bean soup said -- "I am full'.
I know my son loves red bean soup and he would love to finish the bowl.

I feel it is really rude for the waitress to say it to us -- we were there for less than one hour! Did we take too long to eat? I don't think so. There were plenty of other tables with people talking and drinking and have lengthy dinner, but not us. We are just a small family having simple dinner and honestly we were there for less than 60 minutes.
Not a good welcoming experience.
Bellelindah
Had Yum cha here a few times. The food are great I cannot complain, but was a little unhappy with one of this lady / might be the manager of the crew? Anyway, she was just always greased me off and put an angry or evil face when she searves our table. Like really!? I didnt slap your face....That attitude wrecked my morning!
Expensive Delicious Habit.
Stopped by New Royal Garden for a leisurely yum cha last week with friends. Decent suburban yum cha; come about 12pm for all the good stuff!

We visited this place a few days ago just for a regular dinner. There are a lot of authentic items on the menu. We ordered chilli chicken and fried chicken noodles.

For chilli chicken preferably you should order with chicken paste, else like how we ordered the cut chillies would be served separately. The chilli chicken wasn't too bad but I felt the sauce was a bit too strong and after a while it was getting difficult if you were eating just that.

Chicken fried noodles is actually deep fried noodles with slightly sauted chicken. Didn't enjoy it at all. Though my wife was okay with it.

What actually put us off is that the kitchen staff were quarrelling and shouting at the top of their voice and they were clearly audible. This went on for a reasonable length of time. Also they keep collecting the dishes in trolleys making a lot of noise. All the plates and cutlery being dumped and all this happening next to you when you are trying to enjoy your dinner.

The fork supplied to us were heavily bent.
The cleaners running around with wet rubber gloves.

Overall though the food wasn't too bad the experience wasn't. At least we would like to eat in peace when the charges are reasonably high for a regular meal.
Alliwantisgoodfood
+: ala carte lunch/dinner menu can be pretty good

-: average yum cha (I've had better elsewhere)

OK place if you're looking for ala carte dining, but if you looking for yum cha, go elsewhere..
MelbourneFoodPaparazza
This is the place to go if you want an authentic suburban Australian yum cha with the trolleys and decor of yesteryear. Dim sum dishes were of a fair quality, though those wanting more refinement with more inventive ingredients or finer cooking methods may wish to go elsewhere. Service was typically brusque, with our having to wait for our jasmine tea well after the first bamboo steamers arrived at our table. However, as mentioned, if you are looking for a reliable experience of the classic Australian style Sunday yum cha, look no further.

Attend to detail but Slow serive ,limited option, the deep fried food is cold, keep selling to left over item. .

ordered 6 dishes only Sweet and sour pork was nice. had scallop and prawn dish - so so. The signature toufu dish was terrible. just looked colourful not nice.
Snowflower
The seaweed prawn fritters were a bit salty, but the rest of our dishes - fried wantons, egg tarts, chive dumplings, prawn dumplings, cheong fun and chicken buns were pretty good. Typical yum cha restaurant with wait staff bustling about and clearing your plates/baskets as soon as they see them emptied.
JKGasMan
Delicious and reasonably priced yum cha. Had gau is succulent and flavoursome. Had to have one before I could take a photo as you can see. Salt and pepper deep fried white bait is crunchy and fried and seasoned to perfection. Tau fu fah is silky smooth and slides down your throat as a perfect finish to a great yum cha. Highly recommended.
Alice
The sevices was so terrible and rude. We ask for some sauce, and they give to us after 1 hour.
When we asked for third times, they just gave us and throw the sauce plate instead of putting in polite on the table. They talk in their languages and thinking that we don't understand. Please come if you prefer to be torture and disrespect by the waiters !!!
Hope u have a wonderful disrespect day in there!!
Absolutely terrible!!! New Royal Garden has gone downhill! The only reason I havnt rated 0 is because I can't!! What a shame I use to really rate this place. Returned here tonight..just shocking. Firstly a plate and bowl were dirty. Despite the restaurant being only 1/3 full..if that, we struggled to be served, when two of our 4 dishes were ready they were both taken to the wrong table by the same waitress...who laughed it off. Then lastly the food was bland. I am not one to complain but AVOID!! I wouldnt even return if it was a free meal! Disgusted!!!!!

Went here for yumcha on a whim on Saturday. What a splendid choice! Able to easily obtain a seat and the food was piping hot. Had various choices such as siew mai, har gau, yu chi gau, chicken feet, ham sui kok, and various others. Dan tart was nice and the manager brought out a nice big tray of them. Had no issues with any of the food and quite full afterwards. The price was reasonable for yum cha as well.
Luke Spiezia
Can't begin to say how excellent the portion sizes are. For what you pay, it is so generous. I had the pork with chili sauce. It came with mixed vegetables as well. It was so delicious. Writing this now, makes me remember how happy I was when eating this dish. Highly recommend this place. They also gave us a big bag of free prawn crackers as well.
Melbournespoon
There are many yumcha place in Melbourne but which is authentic?? If you are happy to drive relatively further, go to New Royal. They are more close to authentic. Love it and made me miss home !!!

Good n fresh food. Just came out of the restaurant ... Had a filling lunch.... The yamcha was Absolute value for money.....service was à downer the serving staff don' t care n the owner was rude .... But the lingering taste in the mouth surpasses the service.... Might come again just for the food .... I hope they do take away that way i do not have to talk to rude staff.....

Decided to come here for yum cha one weekend...And it wasn't a bad choice: the food was tasty enough and the service was amiable and fun. It was also pretty good value it came to about $22 per person, which for yum cha in Melbourne, is very good.

Service. This is the main attraction of places like New Royal Garden, Imperial Kingdom, Shark Fin House and others like them. As it usually is with these old establishments, service is always reliable and efficient. They never trust the young ones very mu
Eat And Be Merry Crew
The best dish was one of their specials - braised, stuffed eggplant. Thick slices of tender eggplant (no seeds, no chewy skin) with a generous filling of prawny-porkyness in the middle. It had a lovely syrupy gravy made with plump black beans and was topped with lots spring onions. I could easily only order this dish next time and have it with a big bowl of rice.

Chinese New Year Banquet Disappointment. This is usually a favourite restaurant for yum cha and dinner. I have taken friends and recommended people to go there especially for dinner.

I booked a table for 7, weeks early to celebrate Chinese New Year. I was told there would be 2 sittings and we booked the last sitting 8.15 pm. When we arrived we were given a table (not yet set) near the counter and walkway. I asked the waitress to replace the child chair to an adult chair and she was upset and very rude. She tried to tell the other waitress not to give us another chair. She said that we would get knocked with their trolley if they put a normal chair there. I told her that there was enough room and with care it should be alright. We ordered the CNY banquet for 6 and pay extra for the additional person.

Jellyfish and roasted combination came with 6 pieces of soy chicken, cuttlefish and jellyfish. I expected it to be roast duck, BBQ pork and roast pork with jellyfish. This is cutting cost with no value at all.

Crab meat and shark fin soup. We ordered extra one. The soup came in a very small bowl and the extra serve cost $18. The soup was good.

Crayfish ginger and shallot with noodle. The noodle was not cooked through and cold. Ginger was thickly sliced. The dish was put together in a hurry and rough as it comes. As Manu Feidel and Peter Evans from My Kitchen Rules would have said “No love in this dish” and “where’s the sauce”.

Braised Combination with Shoulder Pork. A small dish with fatty thick skinned pieces of shoulder pork cooked with lettuce, 1 prawn, 1 scallop, squid and char siu. Shoulder pork is not expensive cut meat and it could be better with pork knuckle slow cooked so that it melts in your mouth. The thick skin and fat of the pork killed the dish.

Steamed live murray cod. The fish was cooked and tasted well. This is the good dish of the evening.

Assorted mushrooms with seasonal vegetables. Who ate the shitake mushrooms in the kitchen?? The dish was cooked with king oyster mushrooms and canned mushrooms on a bed of lettuce. King oyster mushrooms are cheap to buy and to add insult to injuries with canned mushrooms. What’s the chef thinking? I know you want to make money but give us something for value please.

The banquet ended with lucky cookie, fresh watermelon platter and lotus seed red bean soup. I did not tasted lotus seed in the red bean soup. The total cost was $563.50 for 7 people and of course we put in tips.

The waiting staff had to move us because we were blocking the way for the Lion Dance. The Lion Dance was fantastic and excellent as usual. Kung Hei Fat Choy.

It is a shame because this is the second time I felt this way of this restaurant. The first time when the chef left I walked out of New Royal Garden for years until the chef came back and I returned with friends.

Will I go back again. Not for a long time.
Will I recommend this restaurant to people. “NO”.

Not Happy

Yum Cha. Dropped in on Australia Day for lunch, without a booking. The place was really chockas, but we asked for a seat - after the manager called across the room asking how many. He told us just a couple of minutes and he was true to his word.

If you're a Caucasian Aussie a good sign of decent and authentic, well-priced Chinese food is the clientele being mostly Asian Chinese. Bingo on that front. I know, pitiful isn't it, but it seems to work pretty well.

The service was a little inconsistent, but it was busy, and certainly the staff were friendly for the most part. Nice to see our tea pot being topped up without being asked.

Apart from a fried prawn dumpling being just slightly the wrong side of warm and a so-so commercial mayo served with fried prawn rice paper rolls (which were delicious enough without the dodgy mayo) the food was all really delicious. Would that we could have tried a few more dishes, but we seemed to have arrived mid-service and in any case, filled ourselves on what did come around.

We will certainly try yum cha again (booking next time), and suss out more of the menu - it's difficult to imagine they will go far wrong. We did notice a few shark fin dishes , we didn't ask if they used a replacement for the fins, just chose not to eat those dishes. Would rather they just announced it wasn't real shark fin - or stop serving the dish altogether.

Anyway, the rest of the food was absolutely nod-worthy. We liked.

Overpriced. Went to this restaurant last night food was bland full of onions to compensate for meat meals were not generous for the price you are paying avoid do not go to this restaurant
MsKay_EatPlayShoot
WON'T BE BACK AGAIN!!. The lovely service by the floor staff was ruined by the appalling behaviour of the manager tonight. He took our order and wandered off to finish something. Then he realised after wandering around he still had the order slip in his back pocket when asked by another wait staff.

When taking our order we pointed to a fish dish which he said would cost over a hundred dollars. We asked to change to something more affordable and he recommended a steamed fish 'which was cheaper'. We received a bill shock seeing that the small 2 pound fish (0.907 kg) came to $150 standalone!! WTH!! Market price for this fish normally retails around $30 kg. This behaviour by the manager was shocking to say the least and the restaurant should be avoided.

NO DIM SIM FOR YOU!!!!. Dined at this restaurant last night and walked away extremely disappointed. I found the staff not friendly or welcoming at all, the food was disappointing for the money that you have to pay. All prawn dishes were around the $30.00 price range, over the top I think. Four people ordered dim sims and not one of them received them. How can that happen when they write the orders down. Then we saw platters of fruit being offered to other tables but not ours. WHY IS THAT???? Sadly we will not be returning to this restaurant ever.

Ugh.... Rice over cooked, bland and oily. chicken full of bones, lamb was rubbish.
Regret trying this place over our regular place. Don't waste your money here, it's the worst Chinese food I've had in the area, $63 and a 40 minute wait for take away.

THE BEST SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD AT A CHINESE RESTAURANT.
The food was amazing, the staff was amazing they all had the best personality. One of the waiters took his time out to teach me how use the spoon and fork to pick things up. But the best customer service of all is that by the end of our lovely meal he took the time out to make my friend and I a flower from a napkin. Thankyou so much we will definitely be coming back.

Pretty good.. Usually quite busy. Really traditional and tasty yumcha! Their desserts are yummy. Recommend their sticky rice with coconut and sesame, and the sticky rice ice cream.

Best Cantonese in the SE suburbs. I will preface this by saying that I absolutely love Cantonese Chinese food - it is by far my favourite cuisine and I have sampled it at many many restaurants over the years in Australia and in Asia. One might say I'm addicted to it.

Living in Glen Waverley for years there is a broad array of Asian restaurants so competition is tough, but this is by far my favourite, not just in the area, but one of the best this side of Melbourne.

In my opinion, New Royal Garden ranks 3rd after Silks and Red Emperor (yes, I didn't include Flower Drum here because I think it is pretentious, crap, bastardised food).

I've been here many times and my favourite dishes are the Peking Duck skin rolls, Cantonese Fillet Steak / Fillet Steak with garlic shavings and steamed snow peas, chilli mud crab, crispy skin chicken, Singapore Noodles, the very tasty spring rolls and the broad array of dim sum.

I've only had Yum Cha here once which was good, but in my opinion the dinners (esp. the beef fillet) are better.

Contrary to some of the below reviews, I received excellent service from the first day I walked in here and have continued to do so each time from all the staff.

The prices are slightly higher than other Chinese restaurants at around $30-40pp for a few dishes and appetizers to share (less if in a group), but still well-worth the money and less than half the price of the abovementioned two of which I don't think are far ahead.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves traditional Chinese food - the food is excellent, staff friendly and it has a nice and welcoming traditional ambiance. I'd rate it at least 85%.

Food OK, Service average. Had Yum Cha. Very busy, and although we'd booked, had to wait anyway.

We were constantly being offered food (a good thing!) but the service staff struggle badly with English. They would repeat the name of the item, but any question about it (What kind of meat? What is that sauce? Does this contain nuts?) left them bewildered.

I don't expect flawless English, but even a little would be nice. We were hardly the only non-Chinese speaking table in the restaurant, either.

Having said that, the food was nice. The Pork Ribs are mostly gristle, though... maybe give them a miss. Seafood was good, dumplings nice, pork buns a highlight.

Quality Yum Cha. Yum Cha here is lovely. Dumplings are very fresh and service is very efficient.

GOOD QUALITY FOOD. We have been going to Royal Garden for years and years. it did have a "bad stretch" for a long while BUT it is now definitely back to being as good as it was years ago or better. The lunch yum cha is a little pricer but the variety and quality of the food cannot be faulted. They have many yum cha options and they will also give you normal menu options if you wish. Dinner is great. There is a huge menu we have tried many things and only once not like a dish (cashew chicken - not my style) it is always busy so you are better to call and book. If you go early (with children) it can also be a quick meal. We are happy to go here as it is local and quality is back up to scratch.

Food is just alright. Service is despicable...taking bookings without table available. Keep customers waiting for long period of time.

Disgusting. .. Rude staff, appalling service, dirty kitchen staff, very bland basic overpriced food and dismal atmosphere. Never again!!! Save your time and money.

Not a bad place to yam cha in the morning. Food are relatively good but don't expect many variety compare with other yam cha places.

Yummy Cha. If you have never been to Yum Cha, you should muster up the courage to try it.

You will encounter big crowds, you will encounter lots of noise and you will likely be asked to leave once your meal is finished. Feels a bit weird, but I'm told it's normal behaviour.

Service: Pretty Good
Food: Pretty Amazing
Prices: Reasonable
Authenticity: Not comparable to Asia, but no Passport required!
Yam Cha Dumpling Factor: 6 Prawn Dumplings out of 8

Among the massive number of Yum Cha experiences this is definitely in the top half.

Went to big family dinner and tried a large amount of dishes. All were very good. Yam duck was great with the sauce, though quite dry without. Chicken dishes were great and tasty with ginger and chili, packed a punch. Prawn tofu was good, as were the pork and vegetables. Great for a family feast or special occasion. Service was reasonable, although it took them a very long time to clear the table before we had dessert. All in all, one of the best Chinese dinners I've had in Melbourne so far

Tasty yum cha!. Yum cha was delicious, plenty of variety and comes around quite quickly. We will definitely be coming back soon

Good Yum Cha Restaurant. Good yum cha restaurant in Glen Waverley. They have a great variety of items on offer and the service is good! Have returned many times for Yum Cha :)

Searching for excellent authentic Chinese can be a long journey but my journey has come to an end in the suburb of Mount Waverley! It was faultless, mouth watering food which had us devouring every morsel that was brought to us..! Highly recommend...

Good food, shaky service and overpriced. We agreed to go here with family for a yum cha lunch recently, "just a few minutes down the road". 20 minutes later! But I digress, that's a different story!

The food was OK and covered a good range of usual yum cha options. In particular, the bau were tasty and the coconut jelly smooth and sweet. The other dishes were solid, but nothing remarkable.

The service was hit and miss. Sometimes we were visited every one or two minutes with offers of new dishes, other times we had to look around and wave at a waiter to get their attention. I agree with previous reviews that the restaurant is untidy, especially near the entrance, where papers and lollies were strewn on a table and the water tanks could use some upkeep. The restaurant has a very early-1980s look that is tired and a bit grimy. A sprucing up of the decor would help.

The main drawback is the cost. For an unremarkable, although satisfying, lunch, the cost was significantly higher than other yum cha venues around Melbourne that have delivered superior food and service.

No lal n no sar!! Only bao! This place is very inconsistent!! Total disappointment !! On its good day it's one of the best places for yum cha!

***
Quite inconsistent. I have been coming here on and off over the years. Of late... it has been very lack lustre to say the least. The pastry in the dim sum are sometimes over cooked.. they become gooey and sticky. I used to come here for their Liu Sha Bao / Chinese Molten Salted Egg Custard Steamed Boas!! But even that is bad. I complained about the fact that the filling was not runny as it should be.. I even opened up one to show them. Centre filling was dry. Anyhow... again YMMV compared to my experience.

Very poor service, slow People. Would not let us have plate and told us to use our hands. :(

This place was a disappointment the moment we walked through the door. Fish tanks in the entrance with the covers off looked decidedly unclean, stacks of papers and chairs cluttering the entrance. This was followed by subpar service and ordinary food. Won't be coming back anytime soon.

Best yum cha around this side of town. Make sure you book in advance on the weekends. Mega fast service.

RUDE. I very rarely need to speak up, but I have never experienced such appalling and rude service in any establishment as I did that night. Waiting >45 mins for our meals. Our manager was snappy and condescending. It was a burden to wait staff to order drinks whilst waiting for our dishes to arrive.

Beware.

Maybe I'm finally willing to make the call and say it's surpassed childhood favourite Imperial Kingdom? The lobster was awesome and all of the other small dishes we got hit the spot too. Service is better when you have Chinese speakers on hand.

Ask for more .... A favourite when we used to live around the corner, this place can be chaotically busy, which can be annoying during peak periods (it's abig place, yet, there's barely room to breath in and pass a table when you need to), yet at the same time is a sign of it's success with many Chinese families eating there - some even coming from across Melbourne. The food is traditional feast fare on the English menu and even more traditional fare is available by reading the Chinese menu (or in our case) by simply asking! The food is always fresh, and the prices are right on

Real Chinese. The second time we have visited this great restaurant (although the last time was 4 years ago).
Very Chinese in appearance with a great selection of menu choices which do not appear to be overly 'anglicised'. We enjoyed the great Won Tons and Dim Sims to whet the appetite, then soups and a variety of mains. The salted chillie Pork was moist and tasty with a great crispy texture, the scallops tasted fresh and the 2 beef dishes were again beautifully cooked.
The service was typically Chinese. Quick enough but rough around the edges.
We think possibly not as good as a few years ago (but how many places are?) but we will revisit this one again.
Good value, real food. 7 out of 10, would be higher if the service were just that bit better.

Never Again!. Having been happy with this place previously, tonight was so bad it was almost laughable:
1. Rude greeting on arrival
2. Looong wait for order. Reason given: 'kitchen's busy'. Acceptable excuse for a restaurant? Had to keep walking to staff to get attention.
3. One dish (hot pot with fish, tofu and black fungus) was missing a key component. When raised with restaurant manager, his response: 'I wouldn't have ordered this dish if I were you, because Indian/Sri Lankan people don't like this type of dish.' Aggressive tone. WHAT THE? Completely unacceptable, offensive, and missed the point. (Furthermore, we've had excellent examples of the dish elsewhere.)
4. Ordered another meat dish + rice, but the rice never turned up after asking repeatedly. So, 25min later, when the dish was cold and still without rice, we finally gave up and decided to leave.
5. Staff member wanted to charge us for the last dish that we never touched - lost her temper. Manager had to be called (again) to resolve.

Good service, good price and a very nice setting. Lemon chicken was very poor, but that was the only down part of the evening.

Food is very good, but one of the biggest problem is not clean as they handle the food. Seat was crowed with no space to move around. Always felt like in culture war zone. If the number if seat reduce, it would be improve more by winning my vote
