Review Little Sister - Glen Waverley

Antony Henare
Great lunch upstairs in the sun with the fireplace going, the pork salad was divine, squid bun delicious, one of Glen Waverley hidden gems, good place for a business meeting.,

I was excited to try a new Viet place in the Glen, however I was sorely dissapointed. I ordered the small Pho, however what I was presented with was beyond small. The broth while tasty, was not truly 'pho' and the noodles were overcooked and broken. The food was generally overpriced and undersized. As a Thai-Viet place it's average and the service was nice, however in regards purely to the Viet dishes, I was sadly disappointed.

Service was standard, good decor and everything BUT the cringe worthy point was the food. The two of us ordered the pho, one large and one small as we would normally at Springvale. Boy, the portions were small. I think even the main would just barely feed my child, let alone an adult? The noodles were not fresh, it was cooked till it lumped together, no vegetable sides that came with it, although there were bits and pieces of green vegetables in the soup. The saving grace was the soup which was quite tasty and no msg aftertaste. Also the meat was very fresh.

The service was friendly, and the restaurant looks nice. However, the food I had ordered was not. My friends and I had pho and the soup was disturbingly sweet. Also if there is pho on the menu then there should definitely have condiments on the table for customers but all there was was hoisin sauce to add to the soup! I got the small plate for $10 and boy was it small! I also ordered the pork belly bun bao and I was disappointed at how much it lacked flavour in the pork belly. The pork belly was deep fried and tasted like it was not marinated or had anything added to it, and not to mentioned they had forgotten about the order and we had to ask for it so we ended up waiting for it to be cooked (this was no big deal). Prices for the food and the quantity (and quality) is not worth it given the portion sizes are very small and would be hard to share even though the menu is made for sharing.

Nice place, great food and friendly staff. HOWEVER a little too pricey. I haven’t seen any other Vietnamese restaurant in the area so it’s come as a welcome change however it’s not specifically Vietnamese so the range of Viet food is limited.

Little Sister has a new look outside. It is super cosy inside so come for dinner tonight. . . Downstairs or upstairs, Little Sister says the choice is yours.

Great new spot on Kingsway, loved the green curry and squid bun! Friendly service as well

Went here for pho and although voice in my head said don’t overpay for pho that has been sexed up with fancy extras and nice decor but was happy to be proven wrong, unfortunately I was not. Broth lacked depth and paying more than $12 for a large bowl is still a sign that you have come to the wrong place.

Great service with a lot of different beverages to choose from the menu itself is quite unique entertaining and has a great cross flavour of different Thai and Vietnamese

For a restaurant on Kingsway on a Thursday night it was pretty empty. The menu looks good on paper but the food was pretty average. The service was even worse. Had to ask for a drinks menu. Had to ask for cutlery because they didn’t have enough for all of us seated at the table. There were a number of waiters just standing around talking while this one girl seemed to be doing all the work. My friends and I won’t be going back.

Tastiness 3.5
Price to value ratio 1.0
Ambience 2.0
Service 3.5

There's a reason why there's not a soul in there at noon on Sunday. On a street where choices are plenty and the food scene is competitive, having an undecided south East Asian is certainly not easy. Music was super loud when we got in.

A mix of Viet and Thai, and yet the menu feels forced. Thai dishes were comprised of curry and salad, Vietnamese dishes were pho and bun.

We tried out the spider drinks, taro chips, spring roll and pho.

Taro chips were really nice. Recommended as a side.

Spring roll - not the normal spring rolls, vegetarian, huge and come in three big rolls. Not recommended if you are not for vegetarian. I especially do not like the mix of tofu and mushroom that provided a strange aftertaste, also. It crispy enough. Too expensive for not so good taste.

Pho - not recommended at all. We ordered a wagyu beef and a chicken pho. Taste of the pho were acceptable but the serving was pathetically small. I expected them to be small but in a serving that is that small at the price of a whole pho in a proper pho place is unbelievable.

All in all, taste was alright. Recommended to come for drinks and snack, not for main meals.

The menu style is an imitation of Coda's but the restaurant lack the gourmet taste and service. I haven't tried any of the other mains but it is not an easy place to go for two at all if one is interested in trying out other main dishes.

Great to see another modern addition to the Kingsway strip - I wish I could give a better review as the vibes were good and staff were eager and friendly. Unfortunately the food was pretty bland and nothing to write home about, usually at this price point and positioning smaller portions are to be expected, but so are more refined, bold flavours. Couldn't see the balance between sweet/spicy/salty/sour - the menu seemed interesting, but failed to deliver. Overall the food was quite underwhelming, there's lots of potential here but much work needs to be done to translate the menu on paper to the actual dish.

We went to check out this new addition to the Glen Waverley scene. Some good dishes and some not so good dishes.

The tofu spring rolls were a bit bland and they weren't lattice spring rolls as the menu suggested. The taro chips with mayo and turmeric chicken ribs were good entrees to start the meal. The betel leaf with spanner crab was very nice. Probably one of the best dishes of the night.

The main dishes did not deliver as we had hoped. The crispy flounder and wagyu pho were decent. The red duck curry was okay but the cream overpowered the curry flavours. The tamarind pork hock was a bit disappointing. The skin lacked the crispy crackling. The tamarind sauce was not executed very well as it did not have the right balance of flavours. It was just very sour. The beef cheeks was also a bit of a let down. Lacked seasoning and the beef cheeks were a bit dry.

Overall this joint is worth a try. But probably would not be rushing back.
E-eats
I went to eat at Little Sister over the weekend with a couple of friends. The exterior and interior is very cute. The staff were attentive and friendly.
I ordered the small Wagyu Beef Pho for $12.
The broth tasted a bit heavy for my liking and it wasn't hot. I found that the chilli, lime and bean shoots were dry and looked as though they've been sitting out for a bit. The bowl that the Pho was in was quite awkward to eat out of. It was very small and uneven in height. It felt as though you could easily tip the soup over. Overall, I thought it was very overpriced for such a morsel of food that wasn't particularly special.

I would recommend this place if you love thai and vietnamese. I had the lamb rips which were so incredible, overall food was delicious and the staff was friendly :) Thankyou!

Firstly, I wanna say sorry for the management team for rating 2.5 as I know Little Sister is quite new to the area, but I hope my truely review somehow will help you delivery better service.
- Design: nice and warm with upstair space
- Service: i love the lady at front door who know how to catch customers' attention, however the indoor waiters seem unexperienced and understaffs as well
-Food & drinks:
#lamb ribs ($15 for 3pcs) taste very nice, but wish it could be served on a mixed salad bowl to look more value
#choko salad ($6) boring and nothing special, should be changed into another plate to look more appetite
#pock hock ($25) was the most disappointed one, it would be much much better if the chef can braise the pock hock longer before deep fried, the one i had was too chewy, too salty. And you can sale it for $30 without any problem if served with a side salad (like green apple salad)
#drinks: i gave Little girl a chance when the lady said we can have 2 free drinks when dine in, so why not. But the Riesling was so bad that I couldn't finish half. I hope the manager understand that even that a giveaway drink/product, you need to make sure it reflect the high standard of your business, either choose the good one or not.
- kitchen: a food elevator could be built in to reduce the time and hazard when delivering food from downstairs to upstairs.
- bar: is the key element to increase Revenue and profit, a professional bartender play important role.
...
Just a few things to list, hope you take the review as positive one, although I've been in hospitality industries for almost 6yrs, not too long but I hope it helps.

Friday night - got a table
Service is quite good
I had the turmeric chicken wings that were so amazing, the betal leaf was a very small serving quite tasty but good. Has the taro chips with tangy mayo which was good! The corn was okay as well.
Pretty good got to try a good selection of the menu for 45$

Lunch here was pretty good. We had the lunch special. For $15, you had jasmine rice with the house nam jim, betel leave with salad and silken tofu and a curry. We had the red duck curry which was full of flavor. It was creamy, had lychees and a duck leg. There was fresh Thai basil and herbs. For the 2nd curry, we went with the orange chicken. It was more of a sweet and sour soup base with basil, young corn and baby Thai eggplant.

This was a good 1st visit. Will definitely be back to try the pho.
I came for dinner with my partner, eager to try this new restaurant in Kingsway.

We ordered the sister knows best shared menu, which cause $45 per pax.
What we got is simply sad.
1) rice crackers which cost $6 on the menu
2) betel leaf canapé - not in the menu
3) BBQ beef which cost $19 on the menu
4) green curry lobster - not in the menu
5) mango ice cream which cost $3 on the menu

The overall servings are tiny and definitely not worth $90 for 2. I am a small eater, and I mean small, eating less than 1000 calories per day. I was still hungry after the set menu.

We must have looked really sour because the waiter came and offered us more food, any dish from the menu.

That gesture really changed our opinion about the restaurant. They have showed great attitude and service!
Bun's Food Diaries
I really wanted to give this new resturant a great rating - service was friendly/attentive, loved the tunes they played (gave extra points here) but unfortunately the food was quite underwhelming on this occasion.

We had the banquet for two for $90.This consisted of:
1. The prawn crackers and dip
2. Betel leaf
3. Bbq beef fillet
4. Green curry with lobster
5. Scoop of icecream

A few things
- Both of us aren't big eatters but still left feeling not that full, not great considering the price.
-The betel leaf and salad that accompanied the beef fillet was favoured overly sour.
-The green curry was the main let down. Feels like I was fishing around for a few cubes of taro, some veggies. There was a single lobster tail, now I was with my partner so this was fine but how awkward would it be to have to share a lobster tail with someone you were not used to sharing cutlery/eatting from the same dish with. Worse was that the curry was actually hot and spicy...there was no indication of this on the menu unlike the duck curry and so we assumed mild. Had I known from the onset we would not have opted for the banquet.
-Dessert was literally a small scoop of icecream in a rice bowl. I didn't bother taking a photo of this...

Overall, I struggled to find the value in the food, whether in taste, presentation or quantity. Hopefully things improve when these guys get into the swing of things.
Good Food Good Mood
I was delighted to have been invited to the media launch party for Little Sister last night and to meet some very esteemed chefs and people in the industry. LS had their opening on the 8th of August with 8 being a lucky number in Chinese culture but was officially opened by the local mayor last night.
Located in prime real estate directly opposite Village Cinemas in the popular foodie hub on Kingsway its serving up Viet Thai food with a spicy kick.
There's a restaurant space downstairs as well as upstairs with the upper level also doubling as a private function space. We sat upstairs by the cosy fireplace and started the evening by sampling a couple of signature cocktails. The firecracker garnished with a jalapeño certainly packed a punch and is definitely a unique option if you like it hot. The cocktail menu doesn't seem to be listed here on Zomato but rest assured you are in good hands with the bartenders there. The mai tai was delicious but my hands down favourite was a rum based pineapple concoction. A tropical fruity delight!
We began with a couple of dishes from the something little menu, the oysters and the rice crackers with the nam prik sauce. The market herbs really freshened it up and had a lovely flavour. The menu also helpfully indicates levels of heat so you can manage your spice intake. We then tried the lattice spring rolls with tofu and black fungus. The nuoc cham was a perfect rendition and the ideal accompaniment.
Next up were some little buns, salt and pepper squid with green apple kimchi and artichoke with lemongrass chilli jam. Baos are one of my favourite things to eat and I thought the artichoke one was a bold and interesting option different to the standard karrage chicken you usually find. While I enjoyed them I think the filling to bun ratio could be improved.
We then explored the 'big sister' component of the menu the crispy skinned pork hock with tamarind chilli glaze and the sandy point beef cheek with pomelo and mandarin. The beef cheek was a slow braised sensation that was extremely tender with beautifully well balanced flavours. Then from the 'she's got attitude' section of the menu we had the red duck curry with snake beans, Thai basil and pineapple. The heat combined with the creamy coconut flavours lingered deliciously on the palette
There was a real finesse around the way the dishes were presented too with the squeeze of lime only being added just as we were given the food. Staff were fantastic also they somehow managed to remember exactly what roughly 50 people were drinking and glided around seamlessly topping up glasses.
We finished with a taste of dessert now generally I don't enjoy Asian style sweets but the coconut gel with lychee molasses and sago cracker was such a delicately light and refreshing way to end the meal. I think I've found my new pre cinema dining spot

Whilst we were excited to try the new Richmond Oysters my husband and I left feeling more than disappointed.

The staff are friendly enough and upon sitting down we see the menus and the staff stand there for a good 5 minutes trying to explain the items because the menus are difficult to follow. It unfortunately screams of 'trying to be hip' but misses the mark. Completely.

We ordered a few entrees ( I think from the entree section ... 'something little')

Way way too much lemongrass on the nem prik

The pork buns tastes very bore-ish. Almost like that farm smell. I almost feel terrible saying it!

The curry was extremely unauthentic. Almost past it's expiry date...

We had other mains which were a bowl of basically nothing.

Finally the peanut butter parfait tastes like rubber unfortunately.

Nearly $100 each for two people without alcohol is almost disheartening.

Kingsway Glen Waverley has so many other options to choose from for similar dishes. And way cheaper.

Definitely not worth it here. I feel like the positive reviews on this place are related as they surely cannot eat this poorly and rate it high.

Visited for a sunday night dinner for two, the staff were great. tried he betel leaf (dish of the night!), spring rolls (give them a miss, bland and full of nothing), and the phò (really small portion sizes). Overall tasty, but came home hungry!

Great atmosphere, service and food! Very cool concept. Pork hock, spring rolls and squid bun are must a have. Coconut gel was an amazing dessert. Will be back for more :)

I have visited Little Sister twice. The restaurant has great vibe and the staff are friendly and attentive. The cocktail menu is extensive- I've tried a few and enjoyed them totally. I love Asian food and found the variety of tasty dishes much to my liking. The last time I feasted we left it up to the chef's choice and I wasn't disappointed - tasty grab meat, oysters with chilli, chicken and then beef cheeks. Sweets was delicious- peanut butter acce cream and salty caramel Yum. Sorry no photos. Next time.

Hey guys, recently went to little sister for dinner with family, loved the look and styling of the place!
We ordered the sharing plate which was 5 courses. Everything was great, but the 3 stand outs were the chicken winglets which i could have finished all by myself (instead of sharing)
The beefcheek was delicious and just fell apart in your mouth. (Must try)
But the absolute showstopper was the dessert which was a snickers flavoured parfait. (Will definately be going back again and again for this one).
I also had an esspresso martini which was top notch.
And the service was great
Will definately be coming back to little sister to try the other options on the menu
Thanks for a delicious and enjoyable night

We visited this restaurant today and had a fantastic experience. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly by very accommodating and helpful staff. The menu was exciting to read and it didn't feel like just another Thai/Vietnamese restaurant. I enjoyed every mouthful of the food and the wine. Loved. Will go back.

When the service is friendly, there's a desire to like the food you've been served. We did like elements of it, and perhaps with a couple of weeks this new restaurant on the site that was, until very recently Richmond Oysters will improve. It's clear that the idea is for a classy Vietnamese Thai restaurant, but overall it didn't meet our expectations with the dishes we tried.

I thought being a Vietnamese restaurant, at least in part, it would be safe to order the delicious sounding Pork Belly Little Buns, but unfortunately for me, I could taste the boar taint, so had to hand it over to The Lovely Man. Both my partner and our son, ate their's without issue, though not their favourite version of this treat.

It was unfortunate that although the first person to order, the youngest person at the table, and ordering from the kid's menu, got his food last, and I mean last. He watched four other people eat a starter and a main before his food came out. Our orders came out randomly, I guess as they were ready, rather than as they were ordered. His choice of battered fish and fried noodles sounded good, but unfortunately his fish and batter were quite tough. There was a hint of good flavour there, perhaps lemon and black pepper, but he struggled so much to eat his food, he didn't finish - not a common thing.

From the 'Leafy and Green' section I went with the Soy Marinated Silken Tofu, Papaya, Coriander, Lemongrass and Chili. This dish was spanking fresh, and indeed refreshing, but also bordering on the wrong side of pleasingly tart and too astringent. The silken tofu was well marinated, but the flavours infused were just OK.

My partner's Wagu Beef Pho was, unfortunately also lacking, with the broth not hitting the right notes, the hoisin with it was a good version. He liked the Turmeric Chicken Ribs, but even there, found they could have been cooked a bit longer.

The Vegetable Green Curry was just right for Miss, and a generous serve. Fortunately her starter was from the 'Something Little' section, and she'd chosen the 'bite' worth of Betel Leaf, Spanner Crab, Pomelo and Kafir Lime. The final savoury dish of Beef Fillet was a winner with middle son - and it looked good. Our middle son found the Beef Fillet a winner also; some dishes were working well.

The ice-cream selection was a variety of fruit flavours, and they were all very sprightly and enjoyable. The Peanut Butter Parfait, Chocolate and Butterscotch had good flavours, really lovely, and I would eat it again, though the texture of the parfait was unusual, I am struggling to find the best word, a little gummy maybe. I wondered if it's made with gelatine and that's the textural difference.

Wish them well moving forward, the desire to please is evident, so hopefully some fine tuning will see the dishes satisfy as much with flavour as with appearance.

New restaurant in Glen Waverley. Amazing fresh food and attentive service. Absolutely loved the red duck curry, salt and pepper squid bun and betel leaf with spanner crab. Will definitely return. So happy to have such a great place local to us. See you soon little sister :)
