Review Angies Dumpling - Glen Waverley

Thomas Reeh
Very disappointing. Ordered dumplings as dine in customer. After 30 minutes nothing had arrived. Enquired politely and was told by a grumpy waitress that I had only ordered a few minutes ago. ?? Another 15 minutes passed and I went to the counter to ask a for a refund. This sent staff scurrying and it turns out our order was sitting on the counter as take away. The waitress assumed this was problem solved but I insisted on a refund over cold take away. Not a good idea to sit in. The restaurant is a mess with shopping trolleys and half eaten food dishes where the staff sit. Does not leave a hygienic impression at all. Shambles. I can’t believe the centre management of The Glen let these standards exist under their roof.

Thumbs up for sweet and sour fish and the fried beans: good size, tasted great, strong positive for abundant sweet and sour sauce, slight negative for being onion-less and just a tad too sour. The 3 rice dishes were their lunch specials, filling and tasted ok. Kudos to the staff for very efficient service and keeping the venue clean. I'd rate as 3.5* overall

This restaurant serves various of Chinese dishes with Malaysian taste. Famous with the dumplings, this restaurant also has other main dishes like sweet sour chicken with rice, black pepper beef, and cumin lamb. Additionally, noodles are alos available those who are fond of. What I like about this restaurant alongside the yummy taste is the portion. As it comes in a huge portion, I always be able to take away the overleft. Which make this portion super affordable. Despite all above, the long queue on the weekend as well as the not-too-quick serving time have balanced the pro and cons. However, the earlier we come, the better service we could get. Yet still, this is one of my regular restaurant choice while at the Glen.

Pork was nice. Dumplings nice. Soup was not impressive. Chopsticks seemed old. They forgot my tea :( Hey! I think Angie’s Dumpling Bar does have a good name. Maybe the new one in Westfield Southland is more impressive as it has ROBOTS!! I’ll try write a review there next time I’m in the area

Not a bad place with your typical HK cuisine food. Great if you want a quick meal and then get back to your shopping. Overall, food is nice and service is good.

This is a very busy restaurant with often queues to get in. The dumplings being made on site seemed to be the main draw card but they are average at best, so it's hard to understand the hype. The pork and prawn siu mai was more or less OK. The prawn hargow had quite a thick skin and the filling lacked flavour. The pan fried chicken and mushroom dumplings had a nice filling but the skin was quite thick again. Curiously it seemed I was the only one ordering dumplings here, perhaps the other dishes are better!

I used to come here for family meals and recently found a couple of new dishes that were very tasty. I would recommend them to my friends.

The meals were generally tasty, the eggplant and pork lunch was tasty. But, the salt & pepper calamari was awful. The calamari was just battered and deep fried, no salt or pepper. I wished they would be honest and call it battered & deep fried calamari. I asked the staff about the lack of salt & pepper seasoning, they took the plate back to the kitchen and just shaked a heap of salt & pepper over the top of the battered calimari and said here you go. The meal was ruined no appologies! The drink choices was very limited to only sugary flavoured teas. I would not recommend the calamari nor would I come back. I also noticed the kitchen staff pushing a Woolworth shopping trolley through the dining area where we were all sitting and dining.

It was very busy when I went to have lunch. Which meant that when ordering and service was slow sort of slow. I do like the food and pricing was average for the food (depending on the food). There was a variety of food available. I will come back.

Today I stood at the cashier for way too long waiting politely for her to finish her talk with her friend. However as I politely asked if I could order food first, and gave my apologies for interrupting her conversation with her friend, the cashier gave me a very mean look and ignored my request. Uncomfortable language and manners.
Flying Forward
Express dim sum at the front, restaurant in the back.

Angie’s Dumpling Bar offers a mix of Shanghainese, Sichuan and Hong Kong style cuisines.

Chicken & Prawn Wontons in Chilli Sauce – not bad, chunky bits of chicken and prawn in a mild and slightly sweet sauce.

Spicy Beef Noodles – noodles overcooked and soft. The soup was a tad salty, with the pickled vegetables and chilli.

There are always loads of people, but it’s quite an average experience, hence the score of 3.

Rice cake and pan fried pork & chives dumplings were delicious! However some of the steamed pork dumplings were just dry...Wonton noodle soup was average.

Inside the glen we came here as this place is always packed and we felt like dumplings

The dumplings were quite nice , but soggy on the bottom and not crispy but the filling was generous

The noodles were however loaded with sodium, it was so salty I couldn’t even eat it :(

This place is perpetually busy with occasional long queues of hungry people winding out the entrance trying to get a table. We came at lunch time on a Sunday and were lucky enough to be seated immediately.

We had the chilli chicken on rice, the duck with spicy rice noodle soup and the spring onion pancake. All the servings were huge and we struggled to finish it all. Lots of people around us were asking for takeaway boxes at the end of their meals.

The chilli chicken was lovely and the nuts that came with it added a lovely texture and extra flavour. The duck was very meaty and the rice noodles were delicious. The broth was reasonably spicy. The spring onion pancake was slightly too thick and doughy.

Service was the highlight here. The staff were full of energy. They were friendly, efficient and I could see them scanning each table to see if customers needed anything.

Angie is sure doing something right!
Cookielessvee
Genenous amount of seats and friendly staff.

Pan fried chicken and mushroom was steamed rather than pan fried and the skin was overly thick. The filling was very compressed and generous.

Pork and chives pan fried dumplings were very watery that cause the dumplings to get soggy.

The chilli oil is great though. Sichuan tasting but not too overly numbing.

A lot of take away as the location is great. Service is prompt and pay when you order.

Don’t expect top quality or taste as it’s more of a filling your belly place. A least some items are presentable and balance..

More complicated dishes will be a bit of challenge to bear.
Went to have lunch with my dad, he ordered a spicy beef and ox tongue soup with noodles and I ordered the pan fried pork and chive dumplings, I found the dumplings surprisingly good, had that nice crunch from the pan fry, nice juicy filling oozing with juice. Service was good as well, not sure how the rating is so low for this place

For a place that is a dumpling bar, they have very few dumpling dishes on the menu - 4 to be exact. Service is very slow. Food is average. Rather go to the food court.

First time here. Dragged over by a friend who claimed the sour hot soup and Shaolung bau are good.

Decor is typical fast turn around food court design.
Service is quick but emotionless. I look around and people just chat and eat. May be I am such a difficult person.

The sour hot soup is full of various ingredients. Just too much. What is left of the soup is too watery. It also lack the punch feeling in the mouth.

Shaolung bau really looks handmade but not the best looking. The filling is ordinary and too much. I take 3 bites to finish one. My mouth too small? Vinegar comes in a label less bottle and there is no shredded ginger to come with them.

Lau sa bau are cool and the inside does not lau. Or runny.

Pan fried pork dumplings also just ordinary.

No need to return for more.

Angie’s dumpling bar is a newly opened restaurant in the refurbished Glen shopping centre. You’d almost expect there to be some delicious eats after the long line of people queuing up outside, however I found this place to be rather disappointing.

To start off with the good, we couldn’t get enough of the chicken and prawn wonton noodle soup, especially the soup. Infused with so much flavour, we slurped it all up until the bowl was empty. The prawn wontons and the combination of noodles were cooked perfectly and very enjoyable. Portion is reasonable too and you get more than enough soup to share between 2.

On to the not so tasty; chicken and mushroom pan fried dumplings. I’ve had my fair share of fried dumplings over the years, and unfortunately this one was a miss. At first glance, the dumplings looked steamed, however after close inspection I found out that it was just slightly pan fried on the bottom- was a bit too undercooked. The filling of the chicken and mushroom was way too much for my liking and in terms of the overall dish, it just seemed poorly made with not much flavour, quite bland. I was relying on lots of vinegar to get me through the dish.

Dinner at Angie's Dumplings, they have yum cha steamed pork buns in the Bain Marie. But not chicken sadly. The struggle was real as I'm overall not a fan of Chinese food... except yum cha. Noodles are often too oily and frankly not a risk I'm willing to take By 5.30pm on a Monday with an optional 7pm Christmas closing, everyone except Angie....

Ordinary an standard food court flavors, really nothing more to say, you can find the similar taste nearly everywhere in food courts. The best dish could be their fish head soup, although the dish itself is nothing, but the soup is incredible, flavors and spices are well combined, can’t stop drinking it. However the others are just plain, because as we all know, the soup and ingredients are separate prepared and cooked, so the soup flavor will not go into the ingredients.

I’m not one to write reviews but I’m So disappointed! Been here a few times but this will be the last. The food that was delivered to our table was completely different to the description on the menu. Fried fish came smothered is sauce making what was meant-to be crispy fish soggy. We asked for less chili on our chicken but wow if that was less I can’t imagine what a normal serve of chili would be! And lastly the XLB was just dough. Just a waste of hard earned money on a meal that will go in the bin. Rant over!

Had a bad experience. Ordered no 801 with rice as I was by myself. It arrived just with a plate of chicken. I asked where the rice was and the staff were quite rude. It could have been a misinterpretation or a mistake but that lack of customer service and the rude manner of the all young staff were appalling. The supervisor was a young Asian staff who obviously had no experience in customer service and pretty much yelled and waved the menu around showing me what I had ordered. Won't be going here in a hurry.

Went for weekday lunch. The cafe was busy but there wasn’t a long wait for a table. The portions were large and average around $12 each. Large menu with a good assortment of dumplings.

The place was quiet so we thought we'd try it instead of Hakka Poppo.

We ordered chicken fried rice, steamed Shanghai pork dumplings, pan-fried chicken and mushroom dumplings, shredded pork and pickled vegetables in rice noodle soup and honey date tea.

The only dish I enjoyed was the chicken fried rice. The pan-fried dumpling skins were too thick and chewy, and was not fried enough. The meat inside was tough. The rice noodle soup needed a lot of chilli oil to make it more flavoursome.

Service was hit and miss depending on the waitress passing by. Most of the time we were ignored. I'm unlikely to return.

Satisfies your asian food cravings but nothing too special. Wonton noodles were tad salty or MSG (can’t really tell the different tbh) but xiao long baos were super juicy and were quite big.

Yes it’s a busy place, which is good, coz then u get fresh. But the only part is that most of their food has MSG. Tried the veggie dumpling. Mafatofu rice .. can’t say I try again !!!

Looks really good, is consistently busy but the worst Chicken and Sweet Corn soup I have ever had!!! So disappointing considering that the the whole reason I ordered take away from here. Much too much pepper added it was so spicy. What a shame. Their dumplings look promising but based on what I have tried thus far. Not impressed.

Dumplings here are good especially the Xiao Loong Baos - passed the skin strength test where the skin was thin yet strong enough to hold the soup which was acceptably sufficient and steaming hot and full of flavour. We also had one each of the the pork and chives dumplings and the chicken and mushroom dumplings, Sichuan fried rice with pork belly and char kway teow which tasted more like fried beef hor fun than CKT. All in all it was a good first experience and we’ll be back to try the other dishes if in the area.

Fast paced dumpling bar serving a massive array of dishes, we went for the roast duck on rice and the chicken dumplings and the roti wrap.
Duck really really good still super moist and good quantity, dumplings were fresh and really well made while the roti wrap was also fresh.
Very clean restaurant and other diners food looked super appealing, don't understand an average rating for this place as we thought every dish was on point.

Can’t wait for the new food court to open. Not a lot of choices at the moment. The service here is extremely rude. When paying, they will say “card payment surcharge 1%, OH KAYY??!” When I ask them for small plates because we sharing food, the waitress just slammed (not exaggerating here) a stack of 10 small plates in my open hands, even though I only asked for 3. The team there is abrupt, lack basic manners and rushes you through service.

Angie's Dumpling was highly recommended by my cousin so off we went to try it out. Incredibly long queues at meal times, was fortunate to get a table at 3pm without having to wait at all. Ordered the fish head soup, we were served with such a huge bowl, we had to take home half the bowl. The dish was above average in terms of taste. I would have preferred my fish head soup containing preserved vegetable and tomatoes, with a hint of Chinese cooking wine and ginger.

I only come here for plain steamed mantou (buns). The food is pretty below average, everything I have tried is either bland or overly salty (fried rice, dumplings, veggie bun, beef on rice etc.). Two stars for plain buns and an extra star for location.

Angie's Dumpling Bar should just be called Angie's. When you have a name of the food as part of your restaurant name, it immediately sets the bar high. Unfortunately, the dumplings taste just about average, thick-skinned and very limited in variety. If wanted to have a dumpling fix, I'd want to head to a dumpling bar and have pretty much everything.

On the plus side, the menu offering is extensive and varied. There's dim sum & BBQ roast meat (Cantonese) , curry laksa & fried kway teow (Malaysian), friend chicken with dried chilli (Szechuan). A jack of all Asian cuisine but master of none. Service is pretty efficient, supported by an army of cooks in the kitchen and waiting staff in the restaurant. We've not been here during the peak hours so haven't had to queue up. All in all, it offers something for everyone but if I want anything specific, I'd go someplace else.

Had a roast duck on rice for takeaway, by my surprise the speed and quality of the food was better than I expected. I didn’t have to wait in the que to order a takeaway dish and it was ready within 5 minutes. The roasted duck was by far the best quality I’ve tasted so far (especially for a takeaway) in the Glen Waverley area. The meat wasn’t dry and the skin was really thin and roasted to perfection, (unlike some or many places had so much fat on them that you’ll have to throw away half of the duck while eating). I could eat the whole thing by just leaving bones behind. I’ll defiantly go back for the roast duck. If you don’t want to que up for a quick lunch, order takeaway and eat it at the tables outside the Asian grocer.

Second visit for the same dish: very disappointing, I threw 3/4 of the duck away. I was really fatty and has a strong duck smell. I guess the quality of their dish is very unstable.

A long queue outside made me think this must be good. The restaurant was packed.. The restaurant however is a bit unusual. Staff won't take your order til you're seated, but they don't take your order at the table. There is a huge queue to get a table.. so once you are finally offered a table to sit and everyone decides what they're wanting, you have to get up to go order.. this is not unheard of, but as this restaurant is jam packed with tables, chairs and narrow paths with sizzling hot food, the addition of customers walking back and forth to order seems like a bit of an unnecessary hazard. If you send one person up to go order, best make sure they have a good memory or it might be another queue again! Alternatively, if you have a large group, I guess everyone can just individually queue.. it might help if Angie's offered an order form at the table or well, it'd simply be a more pleasant experience and faster turnover if table service was offered.
Food was well cooked. The Chinese pancakes crispy on the outside, hot and tasty. The noodles were a huge serve. Sauces quite nice. XO sauce seafood not unpleasant but really not authentic XO nor very spicy.. more like a fermented bean sauce with a hint of shrimp xo taste. It's really not very expensive, but you could probably find cheaper and better nearer the cinemas and train station.. I guess the main thing is there really isn't much choice at the Glen shopping centre with the renovations on at the moment. Would I come specifically for the ambience and food? No. It's not the best experience. Would I eat here if I was at the Glen? Yes.

Do not order the spicy or pickled fish. The fish has no taste and covered in lots of undercooked floury counting that just turns to flemmy group in the soup. The fried string bean was looking good, but no taste as well! The only dish was ok its the roast combination. I guess we made the biggest mistake is going to a dumpling bar ordered non dumpling dishes.

Overall, I think if one doesn’t expect too much from the place for price it charges(higher end where better quality and service are provided). A convenient and tasty enough place to hang out for families, a good place for friends catch up where everyone just go and order their own meal and pay for their own up front (no split bills worry) Or a place for you to show off how good you are at remembering everyone’s order at the counter!

That’s the summary and if you care for more, please read on.

second time trying this joint out.
First time I did a takeaway on a Friday night since it was bustling with a queue. Even then takeaway took about 10 minutes but the quality was relatively good (noting its pricey). I had a 5 minutes wait ordering the takeaway since the customer in front of me asked a lot of questions about the menu and discussed with his wife before deciding. Why they do it at the counter will be explained in the service section.

Service
This time came for brunch and was surprised you are to wait to be seated but ended up having to go straight back to the narrow entrance to order your food and pay first - fighting with people who are trying to get a takeaway, waiting for a seat, trying to get attention to get a seat. This, I think is the failure of this shop, noting their attendants are sometimes hanging around not really doing anything because their job is to serve food from the kitchen and clean tables only.

Food
Considering its name has dumplings in it, its menu is a wide variety of Taiwanese, Sichuan, shanghai and Malaysian dishes, with a tendency to Taiwanese. We of course must try the dumplings but I am also interested in the side and rice dishes.

Side dish:
Xiaolongbao- taste is alright, pass the mark but skin is overly thick. Size is bigger than what o would expect normally, not a bad thing but do those small eaters, this may be sufficient for you if you are worried about carbo intake.

Spicy pigs ears- taste is alright, sufficiently spicy and tasty. like the xiaolongbao, the pieces are in big slices, it looks like a lot but there’s not many in it

Main dish:
Boiled dumplings- taste ok, had better dumplings where the meat is smoother and the skin is as thick as the xiaolongbao. A little disappointed considering it’s a “dumpling house”

Ginger and spring onion fish fillet on rice- meets the mark with a generous portion of fish fillet, ginger and vegetables. It’s also cooked nicely where the fish is fresh and smooth

Drinks:
Iced Milk tea and lemon lime bitter
Generally very expensive for the size they give you
They stuffed up iced milk tea (gave me iced lemon tea which I had to ask for them to change twice since the first request came back with you can’t exchange - well I did not order it?)

Ambience
Suitable for families with pram and strollers as it caters for them to bring these in. Very convenient considering it’s in a shop in the shopping centre.
However, there’s a huge element of rush at peak times. We were given the hint to leave and hurry up as our plates were cleared as soon as the last piece leaves the plate. I haven’t even chewed on my food.

Tried out this new dumpling bar, I was disappointed when they ran out of Xiao longbao as early as 11:30am, however overall experience was pretty good, dumplings were consistently generous, price was value for money, queue was long but turnover was quick. I’ll definitely come again.

Visited for lunch with the family on a Sunday afternoon and there was a huge que. The staff were responsive and gave everyone in line a menu to look at when we were waiting. I liked that they also came back every few minutes to give us an update as to when the next table would be ready.

We ordered:
1) special fried rice - tasty and had lots of egg which was nice.

2) pan fried pork dumplings - a little burnt on the edges imo so had to pick it off before eating.

3) Oyster sauce Chinese broccoli - this dish was huge! I love eating my greens but even with 3 ppl we could not eat it all. It was fresh too.

4 ) Chicken fried noodles with vegetables - this dish was a bit salty and the sauce had a funny taste to it. The vegetables were very fresh though.

Post meal - no dying of thirst afterwards...likely no or minimal msg used so a point given for that.

New Glen, new food outlets. Came here on a Sunday and there was a queue as expected as everyone was checking out the new part of the shopping centre. We had the rice cake which was a bit soft in texture. The wonton skin was broken i.e. overcooked. The duck wrap with rough duck meat.. Hot and sour soup was just warm and spicy, could not taste the sour. The spicy beef noodle soup was average. Overall the food was quite salty and needed to drink a fair bit of water afterwards...

July 2018: Food 3, After so many negative reviews, I decided to go back and try again..then I realized their fried noodle dis not tasted as yummy as before. Disappointed that they might have change the chef but dumplings are still good.
Oct 2017 :Food 4, New place and I was there for a quick simple brunch. The food were great, dumplings were made fresh there. Nice and simple. Spacious but when the crowd come in for lunch after us. It starts to get serious...seriously busy. Maybe its just a new fave as the building is still under renovation and the nearest Asian food there at the food market is this little restaurant. Owner has made a good call on location but to work under preasure on weekends. They will need to work hard to maintain their level at serving great food at a fast rate. So far they are doing all right.

Came on a weekday and it was quite packed and bustling. The wait staff were polite but a little bit disorganised and haphazard. Ordered some boiled dumplings which were unfortunately okay at best. It did its job but nothing about it stood out; it wasn't particularly flavourful. Was pretty disappointed because dumplings were meant to be their forte! Other food looked good though might come back and try!
