Great staple Asian take-away restaurant. I've been a customer of Kampung Malay for many years now. The menu hasn't changed at all in that time, but it doesn't matter as there is a huge choice on offer. The food is great and packs so much more flavour than chinese cuisine. I understand other reviewers complaints about lack of heat, but we have always asked for chilli-infused soy as a condiment which is made with birdseye chilli, and this adds the heat you're looking for. its a staple take-away restaurant for the family when you are just too tired to cook at home. Its also great to dine in, although because its so busy all the time it can be noisy. But you know what, you just won't care because it adds to the ambience. If you're looking for a fancy restaurant or somewhere to take someone that you want to dazzle, this isn't it, but it is fantastic to go with good friends and family as its more relaxed and friendly. That's what we love about it.
Our family favourites are salt and pepper calamari (although if you get this as takeaway, it gets a bit soggy - best to have this eating in), bangkok fish (ditto for the calamari), kong-po prawns, coconut curry soup, yum yum chicken, kampung beef and sizzling beef. The chilli soy condiment they also do takeaway.
Great for cheap lunch. Great Westernised Chinese/Malay packed with MSG and all the usual trimmings.
I must admit I've eaten here heaps but have only ever ordered from the lunch menu. I've tried all of the specials and have never been disappointed.
Staff are usually pretty friendly yet cheeky at times.
Bottle shop next door makes it an even more inviting option for friday lunch.

Kampung Malay Kampung Malay is testament to the successful formula that Jason Tan and partner Kate Ferber have used in their existing restaurants. It is the same in all three of Tan's restaurants: a combination of Malaysian/Chinese food, consistency of product, friendly service and BYO ($1 per head) which make this an extremely affordable dining experience. As a result, Kampung Malay has reaped the benefit of loyal clientele who regularly enjoy the $9 lunch specials or dine there any night of the week for the price of a takeaway. After migrating from Kuala Lumpur in 1984, Jason found his niche adapting Malaysian dishes to better suit the Australian palate. His food shows the influence of many other Asian cuisines, is more subdued and not as spicy as that of his homeland, but tasty nonetheless. The place is a bit basic, and the menu is always the same but they have a fairly vast selection. The food is good and the service is efficient.
Garlic calamari were actually fried, that was slightly disappointing as the garlic prawns weren't and I was expecting something similar.
I tried the sambal curry last time I went and I found it wasn't as amazing as a Thai curry can be, but that is just my preference of Thai food over Malaysian. The prawns in the curry were a bit tough.
The Laksas are good.
Went to the nearest asian food in the neighbourhood for lunch. It was busy but service really good, the lady accommodate us so well.
We ordered : Fried Wonton, Tom Yum Prawn, Mongolian Beef, and rice for couple. We love the taste, delish! Affordable price and good portion!
Overall, we love this place.
How fantastic to go in a group (a bunch of couples) and have them automatically split the bill (after checking with us of course), giving each couple a number, and then proceeding to service the heck out of us.
Great food, great service, great location. Half our group went back the next night!!! Can't be better than that can it?
The Food In This Charming Malaysian Restaurant Is Freshly Prepared & Tasty. The Lunch Special Prices are Great & Serving Sizes are Good. The Service is Friendly & Very Efficient, the Restaurant is Very Clean & the Decor Is Quite Pleasant & there is Parking at the front of the Restaurant. All in all a Very Enjoyable Experience.
Great entree dishes, hot, fresh and very tasty. Good menu selection of mains, but I think we all ate too many dim sims, curry puffs, spring rolls and Satay skewers to fully enjoy the main courses. Will be going back.
Absolutely amazing! The place is welcoming all the staff are always super friendly and the food is always delicious. Good size menu and a good price! Definitely recommend!!
I was really in the mood for a beef rendang and this place did not disappoint. Staff was friendly and helpful. Serving was generous and food flavoursome. Great value too. Will come back.
