Review En Japanese Bar And Restaurant - Goodwood

Average Japanese dishes, only thing that stood out (after we ask for it again 30mins later) was Sashimi & Sushi platter, which was expensive compare to others but it's Fresh. Would highly recommend to give the floor board and odour of the restaurant a bit of Love. We sat at the 2 people table next to the bar, each time someone walk pass table would shake.

Ordered ramen, aburi salmon roll, torimayonaisu and takoyaki. All dishes were delicious. Atmosphere could be a little bit better, i.e. no music playing, but my table was pretty loud anyway. Mains did not come out at the same time BUT at this time, with the uncertainty of everything it was likely only one cook and one waitress and there were lots of tables to serve, so be aware and be patient please. Support small business in these hard times guys !

Terrible service. We waited 1.5 hours for food when we attended to celebrate my son's birthday. I had to get the attention of staff to take our order, then and hour layer asked a staff member where our meals were. He didn't come back to me, but they eventually trickled out. Well, three did. The fourth was again forgotten. I pointed this out again to the same staff member. Then it came out. When I went to pay I asked the staff member if we were forgotten and to his credit he said yes. Well, gee thanks. You weren't busy, and I think the terrible service is getting known out there. Will try Japanese again but never, ever at this place.

Great food and reasonably priced. Quirky and slightly daggy decor but it makes it feel very welcoming. Do agree with some of the comments about slow service and hopefully something that’s improved upon but we really enjoyed our food/night despite the wait times hence still five stars.

This is a fantastic little restaurant! The sushi and pancakes are flavourful and well made.

Came here for a first time in about two years and feel like it has gone way downhill. Sushi and lotus chips were good but everything else was sub par. Plates weren't cleaned properly, gyoza was watery like it was frozen prior to frying. Squid and pork belly dishes were inedible, tough and chewy. Not sure if it's cost cutting or different owners but in essence the food did not feel fresh, which probably isn't given the size of the menu.

After waiting 40 minutes and ordering 3x Ramen Main courses we were told they have ran out. Don’t waste your time here.

Wait was over 40 mins for food and restaurant was empty… only had about 4 tables of people? Water was brought out 30mins after being seated. Food was very average and not so nice - the squid was very dry, rubbery and burnt (not a nice grilled “burnt”). The only tasty item was chicken oyster. Additionally when food was brought out, the server had their thumb placed IN the plate of pickle…

Really enjoyed the atmosphere, the interesting beer and alcohol list, and delicious food (we had the tapas). The tapas is quite generous, so we couldn't eat all 6 dishes we ordered (for 2 people). So 4 or 5 if you are hungry, will be good.

Great food, service and atmosphere is to be found in this compact goody road gem. The sashimi is the best you will find in Adelaide, especially the kingfish. And the Age-dashi tofu is amazing. Add to that their extensive Japanese beer, whiskies and saki selection, and you've got a great night out. 6 out of 5 stars!

Slow service. Food was so ordinary...had tasting platter...over cooked and dry. Won't be going back

A nice cozy Japanese bar much like many I have visited in Japan. Nice chilled music playing at all times via a mixing table and IPad. Let's not forget the food! It is Izakaya style food. Somewhat like tappas. Awesome, tasty and an extensive variety, for all tastes. Traditional Japanese beverages are available. So much variety, you could try something new every visit. The venue itself has a cozy charm. Nicely dimmed lights give the feeling of genuine Japanese snug bar. Staff are respectful, polite, efficient and welcoming. (As expected!) Can't wait to visit again...it won't be long... Jason

This was not a dining experience to write home about. Even the "blackboard" menu items were not available. Food service was incredibly slow. Many of the menu items off the menu. Food was generally okay but some was dreadful. The "outdoor area" was by the bins and the stench was overwhelming. The loos were grubby. We were advised that the restaurant was in the process of change. The manager and staff were very apologetic and perhaps doing their best but needs a whole new broom. On the positive; there is lots of room for improvement.

Great atmosphere, lovely and attentive staff, freakin fantastic foods! Absolutely loved this place and can't wait to make many return visits!

Very new experience for me. I wasn't sure what I was going to order, but initially chose a crumbed chicken dish as a starter, plus others in my group chose dumplings.... which were delicious. My main dish was teriyaki chicken, which I really liked. Pricing was excellent!

Food was ok
Service friendly and polite but slow
Asked for all meals to be delivered at the same but the dishes came out staggered over a 35-40 minute period

fantastic food great atmosphere and cool staff. The artwork on the walls was amazing. Great night out with Sake and Japanese Scotch. I will recommend this place to all who want a true Japanese experience
Foodmousy
Poor service, very slow, not attentive as only one waitress on the floor to serve the busy restaurant. The food is great but need to hire more staff. This is an ongoing issue and obviously the management is not making efforts to improve their service.
Socheath Meach
Popped in for a meal and some drinks . Was more than impressed with the food . Tried 12 different items off the menu. Sashimi was excellent, probably the only dish didn't like that much was one of the beef mains but even that was still decent . Definitely be going back in the near future

One of my favourite Japanese restaurant!!! Cutest little place. The food is amazing and I absolutely love the atmosphere. It's like entering Japan... everything is so traditional and the service there is great too!

This place is an absolute hidden gem. I'm from Brisbane so I'm usually very spoiled for Japanese restaurants. This place is one the only Japanese places here I can recommend. They actually use salmon belly on their nigiri and not only that, the rice to salmon ratio is just right. (Nice pieces of salmon belly). Their Cha siu and their tofu dish is to die for. They have increased their prices but I still think it's reasonable for what they bring to the Japanese food scene.
Asha
Really good Japanese tapas. Nice place to share food. Unfortunately they need to increase their waiting staff as service can be very slow and they also got our orders confused.
Stella Tabor
Great food and really friendly and attentive service. The only thing I could comment on would be that the dishes are brought out too close together. We ordered around 6 of the smaller dishes to share and they were brought out within less a minute of each other which made the email feel rushed as the food would have been cold if we had left it to eat later. If the meal was a little more spread out it would have been better
Suzie893
Unfortunately our experience was not the best, some of the food was lovely but there were not enough staff. The poor waitress and waiter were running around like crazy making us feel uneasy. Could be a great place with more staff.
Becky Smith
Great food and atmosphere by the service was terrible, they didn't have our booking had to wait over an hour to get a table (wasn't very busy) and forgot two of our dishes!!
Aunty Ol
Really enjoyed the food but haphazard service. They forgot on of our dishes despite us reminding them when we ordered another beer. Wouldn't have had another drink if we'd known there was no more food coming.

The bar is nicely set up with good lighting and decor;
They ve got tasty gyoza, chashu,Tamago ,yakitori to go with sakes at a reasonable price....all bring in a good izakaya feel. Must check out (atleast thrice)
Tonytonytony
What a little gem on goodie road. And excellent range of Japanese food which was really well prepared. $10 corkage is reasonable.

((This sentence is only because 140 characters are required))

En Japanese is a rather charming Japanese izakaya bar located on Goodwood Road. There aren’t many places for izakaya style dining in Adelaide so owners Chong and Tanase thought it was a good time to start one. The front of the restaurant is a mix of high tables and bar stools alongside normal tables with red velvet cushion chairs. It may be deceivingly quiet at the front but wait till you step into the back section, past the hanging Sapporo long lanterns. That is where the life is, what izakaya bar dining is all about. Behind the bar you will find a big range of saké, shoju and Japanese beers. They will be more than happy to help you navigate through the drinks menu. As for the food, there’s a big focus on tapas and bar snacks. Perfect for after work drinks or catching up with friends. Sit yourself at the bar for an even better izakaya experience!

Fantastic place! Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Every tapas dish we tried was delicious. Definitely recommend it for a more traditional taste of Japan.

It's one of my fave places to go for sashimi! However beware of service when this place is busy, they tend to forget your orders. I've become accustomed to keeping track of what I've ordered so if they forget i can remind the staff there. The sashimi bar chef is lovely and loves to converse with everyone. It's a great place though for drinks with friends and the atmosphere is always positive.

Good ambience and great food with reasonable price. Was really busy when we went the other day, service could be better but hey! It's good Japanese food so I'm not complaining. Between two of us we ordered 7 dishes in total. Chicken giblet was really well cooked. The highlight for me was the sashimi and karaage which was done well. Another highlight was the availability of rare jap whisky. Got to try 15 Yoichi which was superb. Overall I'll come back for the food and a nip of whisky

Train station roulette meant we ended up jumping off at Goodwood, and we stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant. Solid menu filled with well cooked authentic food. There's a great range to choose from and all reasonably priced. We sat at the bar and got to experience the great service provided by a guy named Takeo, but also saw that they had new staff who didn't quite know what he was doing, which weighed down heavily on other staff. Hopefully they get it sorted soon.

Agedashi Tofu and wagyu dote were the highlights, the takoyaki and okonomiyaki looked greatly too.

Will definitely be back.

My interest was piqued, as it so often is, by one of my foodie gurus – dbites. After reading her review on En Japanese Bar and Restaurant I knew I had to get there as quickly as my Birkenstocks would take me.

Great authentic Japanese.

Have been all over Japan many many times and it just feels like I'm back in Japan when I walk into this place.
The food is great and the Japanese beer on tap is awesome

🐈🐈🐈

Food was okay and atmosphere was good as well, but service really need to be improved, dine in at a Thursday night, the restaurant wasn't busy at all but the waitress just have no awareness and blaming each other for wrong orders :/

Oh it's been a while since we've been out for Japanese food, and instead of getting our usual fix at Wasai, Sushi Bar Genki, Sushi Planet or Sushi Train, we thought we'd venture out onto the other side of town and try out one of the newer Japanese restaurants that's popped up in the last year or so: En Japanese Bar and Restaurant on Goodwood Road just after the rail way tracks if you're travelling from/through the city.

Nice cosy atmosphere, food wasn't delicate but definitely authentic Japanese. Very pleased as there aren't many of these around in Adelaide. Also well priced too :)

Went to En Japanese Bar for a early dinner. The service was friendly but sloppy. We ordered Edamame, Renkon chips, Gyozo, Age-dashi tofu and vegetables skewers. Tofu was the stand out and the skewers were my least favourite dish, mostly onion (which I can't eat), avocado, capsicum and tomato. Very reasonable prices as our bill was under $40, I think this would be a nice spot for drinks and snacks with a group of friends.
Laura
Cute restaurant with a cosy atmosphere and nice decor. The food was very good, except for the vegetable skewers - avocado shouldn't be grilled! The agedashi tofu was my favourite and the lotus chips were tastier than I've had elsewhere. The service wasn't great - one of our menu items didn't arrive and when we asked if it was coming the waiter said he'd check and never came back to let us know what happened (it was obviously forgotten, and came out a bit later).
The have a separate vegetarian, GF and vegan menu which is good.

Love the Japanese beer on tap, friendly staff, good food.
Has a bar type atmosphere out the back if you want to grab a beer and snacks without a whole sit down meal. Top place.
They look good, I'd really want to try it some day, I guess whenever I visit there I'm hitting you guys :D I just hope it's all good when I come :p

Loved it! :) staff were friendly and the menu had a good variety. Absolutely loved the lotus chips and cha shu! Food's reasonably priced too.

Get In Before The Prices Go Up. Went here with the girlfriend, her sister, and her sister's boyfriend. This is relevant because we are in our twenties, and they are two pink-faced 18-year-olds with little money. EN JAPANESE TO THE RESCUE! A fabulous evening where we were able to sample a range of tapas-style dishes: the takoyaki (the octopus balls?) were divine, as was the pork belly. I enjoyed a Japanese beer, and the children enjoyed their cokes.

The bill came to some ridiculously outrageous figure, as in, outrageously low. Get in quick!

Had takeaway from EN last night, and despite most it being cold after waiting there for it to be ready, the food was fantastic! (even with reheating). Loved the Gyoza, the Miso chicken wings and the Takiniku Beef especially. Can't wait to dine there. Menu attached was from the table, but takeaway is same (they'd run out of T/A menus).
Clevs
Not the best. Took the family, not enough food in the servings, friendly staff, go out to the toilet and that's a sham, tables and chairs piled up if was like a dump - won't go back
Daniel Low
Good concept of combining Japanese beer and sake with Japanese street food but expensive for the quality that was served. Has to be the most expensive curry rice in Adelaide for that tiny portion. Would return for the beer but probably not the food.

Tasty. We had a wonderful meal at En and halfway through the meal we were already planning our next visit. The pork belly and chicken were the highlights but all dishes were great. The mains are small but are meant to be ordered with several tapas. For 2 people we ordered 3 tapas and 2 mains and found this to be a perfect amount of food. Beer on tap and really friendly staff and atmosphere. Adding another great piece to the goodwood road precinct.

Almost the real thing!. I've been lucky enough to visit a few of the little bars in japan, and I was very happy with my experience here. Food was very tasty and excellent variety. Sitting at the rear of the bar with a pint of sapporo reminded me of being in japan.
ChickenFeet
Terribly missed managed. What can I say, the combination sashimi rocked up very late (after our mains) and the combination consisted of only badly sliced salmon and king fish. they ran out of scallops and what ever else but didn't bother to inform us, no courtesy shown to the customer at all. chicken was burnt (very burnt) but the beef was tasty. the menu was filthy with food stains all over it. none of this would have mattered if the food was mind blowingly great. but at best it was just ordinary.

lack of care, lack of courtesy, lack of respect to the customer. didn't bother to give them any feedback, left the restaurant with a mediocre experience.

New fave. Sit at the back in the bar as it is not so bright and has more atmosphere.
Sapporo and Asahi on tap was great. Char Shu pork divine. Sashimi was excellent and good to be able to watch it being made. Beef curry was also yum. Service was very friendly. Will be returning tonight.

Work Chrsitmas Meal. We gathered at En on Friday night to share a meal before Christmas, From the attentive and friendly staff to the superb food and the wonderful hosts, this was a great night out. En has a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, and the bar out back is spectacular.

We had a banquet put together for us - the sublime flavours and beautiful presentation impressed. We left sated and happy. I will definitely recommend En as a great place to enjoy excellent food and personalised service. Thank you all

Impromptu visit and pleasantly surprised. Great place. Loved the 'secret' bar at the back of the restaurant which had japanese beers on tap. Food was great. Would recommend the squid tenticle skewers and octopus balls. Will be visiting again.

So bad we left laughing. Where to start with this disaster, from a party of six, one main and one entrée never arrived. From the first main being served to the last (being the fifth), took an hour and a half. Two of the mains were so small, that I'm still not sure they actually were mains. Made all the more infuriating by having the owner stand at the counter, eating from a bowl of food as were waiting.

Awesome suburban place to hang out. I really love En for quite a few different reasons. Firstly the food is delicious - the squid tentacles, and the pork belly being a few of my favourite dishes, and the alcohol selection, although small is not too bad at all. The owners are so friendly but in a truly genuine way - the kind of thing which really goes a long way to making you feel comfortable in a venue. There's something about coming to En with a couple of friends and just grazing your way through the night with some sake & rice beer, as you sample as much of the menu as you can fit that is really wonderful. The red gum slab bar and tables along with the red brick walls provide a warm and cozy late night feel that will be sure to keep you here for many hours. With all these amazing suburban places opening up, who needs to always go to the city now?!

A great Tuesday night.. Was taken to En for a suprise birthday dinner, and had a lovely night. Loved the dark atmospheric interior we sat down the back, up at the gorgeous timber bar. Ordered the lotus root chips which were so so, sashimi which was excellent (so much so that we ordered a second serve), tempura which was good and the sweet potato chips with honey and mayo, too sweet for my taste which made my husband happy as he didn't have to share. Alas the Goyza were sold out. For a Tuesday night it was close to full. Had a wonderful Japanese Plum wine which although sweet was divine served ice cold.
Although the service requires a little ironing out, I am very happy to have this new restaurant in my local area and know I will be back.
Andreboisvert1985
Go here for dinner or a beer and share plates.. All the food is exactly what you should expect at a Japanese bar/cafe. Good value, good quality, and friendly service. Come here for dinner or a beer and share plates. This place is new, maybe more tables and no reservations would make it even better.
Tashsallystenty
Best sashimi in Adelaide!. Really new place. So new that not everything on the menu was available yet. Unbelievably good sashimi! Perfect starters. Brilliant place for a meal or just drinks and nibbles. Very cheap for Japanese food too!

En Japanese Bar in Goodwood is quite a unique one for Adelaide. The restaurant is set out like a traditional Japanese bar, the decorations were mainly wooden and area was slightly dim. There were many selections of Japanese alcohol available and on display behind the bar. The majority of the servers and chefs were Japanese and speaking in Japanese and this sets the mood as a traditional bar well.
The Feed Report
Japanese Goodwood October 27, 2014 This place is very new. I wouldn't normally go somewhere unreviewed like this, but it's nearby, and sounds interesting. The waiter is very pleasant and informative. The waiter informs me that the place is aiming to do traditional Japanese cuisine, which means lots of small dishes. Excellent tip: When ordering tapas, order one dish at a time. Cha-Shu 9/10 Stewed and flame-grilled rolled pork belly slices with mayonnaise and spring onion. I'm expecting some plain meat with some overly-strong spring onion. However, this is nothing of the sort. The meat is soft, and has three subtle tastes: the slight browning of the meat, the tang of the spring onions, and the zesty cream. It's an excellent meat dish, in anyone's book.
Adelaidefoodcentral
The venue is a type of bar known as an Izakaya, which is a Japanese drinking establishment that serves tapas style dishes to accompany the drinks. While tapas dishes make up half the menu, there was also a need for larger plates to generate more revenue.
