Review George Harcourt Inn - Gungahlin

A great feed for lunch with the family after visiting Cockington Green. Instantly when walking into the premises, I feel like I was back in the UK in a traditional English pub, the place looks great. 👌 The food was great also and a good selection in the menu. Well presented and tasted good. The family friendly part threw me a little bit, we were kind of hoping to see a kids playground within, but could only see a small section for kids which had some old toys and blocks in there. The kids high chairs need some TLC; we used some wipes on them before we used one and the amount of dirt/grime we wiped off was gross.

Nice old English pub style but can get very busy. Food was good and pretty quick compared to the amount of patrons there on a Sunday. Plenty of parking across the road and you can reserve tables for lunch. Live music on a Sunday. Great outdoor areas and good for families. A few people also brought their dogs as well.

Just had lunch, it is our 2nd time here, and the food is absolutely amazing!! Pretty good value, too. The meals are huge and soooo delicious. I had the steak and Guinness pie, can't believe I finished it all. Can't wait to come back again. Even our 6 year old managed to polish off her huge lunch. Would give 6 stars if I could. 😋

Best pub in the Canberra with plenty of parking, food and beer 10/10, nicest looking english pub should be heritage listed in my opinion, if you haven’t been here your missing out.

Had Beef Vindaloo and it came out cold and just looked and tasted like Irish stew. Just get normal pub food as they don't know what Indian food is. They do good fish and chips etc.

Great outdoor seating, gluten free options (intolerance - can't confirm coeliac safe), area for the little ones to play, and great steak!

English pub, pub food, good beer with an atmosphere to match. I feel The George is a bit of an institution. Great building with enough areas to suit what your after and the occasional band. Food wise is above expectations, you really shouldn't go too wrong. The only downside is its a little far out so make sure someone is driving. If your after some pub grub and a few drinks you can't go past The George.

Always a good place to go on quiet weekends. Lots of outdoor space and heaters so it works for families or large groups. Perfect during those warmer summer months, plenty of shade and usually there's some type of live music

Attending a friend's 40th last night, we thought we'd grab a drink and feed to kick off our night. A pint of cricketers arms and a glass of the Squealing Pig Sauv on tap- not a bad drop- with none of that mouthful of wine in the bottom of the glass, it felt like a never ending wine! $21 bucks for the pair, these people know how to keep the punters happy!<br/><br/>Next surprise was the hefty, and I mean hefty, serve of pork belly, spuds n broc! It looked gorgeous. Melt in your mouth with perfectly crispy crackle, they could have halved that serve and still charged the $25 bucks they had on it. There were no problems grabbing a T/A container as we had half the serve left over! The S&P squid, sweet potato fries and salad was absolutely delish and, a generous serve & gluten free (*coeliac note, chips cooked in same oil as beer battered chips).<br/><br/>Great facilities for functions, fire pits with regular top ups, plenty of seating add the friendly staff, great ambience leading to an all round great night. I'll be back, that's for sure.

Very rude bar staff - unfriendly and arrogant. The food, however, was fantastic 👌 chicken schnizel was really good and the sauces were on point

This pub is clearly popular as it was fairly packed on a Wednesday night! The architects designed the building to look like a traditional half-timbered English pub, with the strings of lights outdoors making it very inviting. Inside, the low beams are strung with old teacups, teapots and other crockery which only adds to the warm and welcoming feel. <br/>The menu is traditional pub fare, but with a modern twist. The roast carrot salad was tasty, but the sweet potato chips were my favourite. My companions enjoyed the different burgers they had, while the table next to us looked satisfied by the huge serving of calamari! <br/>Excellent pub for family dinners or catch ups with friends.

So far so good. <br/><br/>Cam here for dinner and a beer and not expecting to much after reading a few of the reviews..<br/><br/>It's a great set up and the atmosphere seemed great. Plenty of outdoor area to relax and a grassed area for kids to run around on. They have a perfect area for live music but didn't have anyone playing.<br/><br/>Food was pretty disappointing. as most of the reviews have said "the chips where great.... "<br/><br/>Overall service was pretty good, beer selection and atmosphere are great but the food needs work. <br/><br/>Good for a Sunday session with snacks if a band was playing.

First time here. Walked into a relatively quiet bar with average live music. That was ok. Went to the bar, batman wasn't really interested in serving (too busy doing something else) and I'm the only customer. Pours me half a beer then disappears? I'm thinking he's changing the keg but obviously not because a friendly girl arrives, asks me if I need help, it's only been 5 minutes. She finishes the pour. I'm not risking another and certainly not going to check the food out. Bad first impression. Off to dominos for a pizza!

Ordered the Wagyu burger. <br/>Chips were great, but that's about it. Tasted like a frozen patty, was way too much mustard and the "brioche bun" was a stale sesame seed topped maccas-style bun. Not to mention the burger was dripping with grease. <br/>Not overly impressed.

Went today hoping food would be something special given the rating. Staff were friendly and helpful and food was reasonably priced. Kids ordered chicken tenderloins which were pretty dry and neither finished them. I had the burger which was ok nothing special while Caesar salad seemed OK. Overall not a bad pub, it's just on par with about any other pub food you will get in most cities.

I'm impressed with their beer selection. They claim to have 21 varieties but I lost count. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. <br/><br/>A good place to grab a drink but the food was not the best. <br/><br/>First time I ordered a steak but it was a bit dry. <br/><br/>Second time I ordered a pot pie. The pie looked good. Puff pastry top was light and crunchy and light. The filing was okay but meat was a bit dry. Side salad was dreadful as they are just leaves, old carrot strings, beetroot strings and onion pieces. Salad wasn't even tossed well with dressing.

Really impressed with the tap beer selection currently at the George - among some of the usuals they've also got the Twos Bird Taco, Asahi Black and Feral Smoked Porter. All of the bar staff are knowledgeable regarding the beers and happy to have a chat about them. Love going on a sunny Sunday afternoon and sitting outside watching the world (and motorbikes) go by.

Pub food at it's worst. Everytime I have been here I have left feeling disappointed. Low quality meat, packet sauces, stale soggy dread, flacid salads and just cooked chips. Every single time.

A classic english pub, bit pricey & posh, but atmosphere is well worth it !. This pub makes you feel as if you are in London. :) <br/>This is next to the miniature park (cockington green garden). We tried the "famous pot pie" and London sandwhich. both comes with chips and salad, very generous portion. goes down well with a wide selection of beer they have. <br/>2 mains and beer will set you back about $55. they have a nice fireplace, and plenty of outdoor seating. we really liked the atmosphere and the toilet is surprisingly clean and spacious ! is that cesar stone ??? waaat...<br/>will visit again next time we are in the neighborhood.

It's great to find an English pub in Australia!. The George Harcourt is, from what I've seen, one of only 2 English pubs remaining that I know of in Eastern Australia. Inspired by the true English pubs of England during trips there late last century, I was thrilled to find the George Harcourt shortly after my last trip to the UK in 1983. When I built my house in the NSW Southern Highlands in 1995 I modified the house interior plans to allow me to instal my own English Pub decor in my loungeroom complete with a bar called "The Big Hammer".<br/><br/>My most recent trip to the George Harcourt was on 22nd March, 2014 and myself and my housemate had dinner there. We were amazed by the very prompt service (within ten minits!) and I had the best golden-brown-cooked chicken schnitzel with chips I've eaten (whilst out) in ages! <br/><br/>It's a long drive SW down the M31 and the A25 (circa 2 hours from home) but it's always worth it when I'm coming to the George Harcourt and a pint of OldSpeckledHen or Guinness at the end of it!

Cozy friendly atmosphere of an old English pub. Great food. Good prices.

They'll always try to fit you in. I've turned up to the George a couple of times without a booking, and the same again with, and they've always been pleasant but absolutely chockers and busy. They've always made the effort to re-arrange to fit you in if required, and the food itself is good quality pub meals.

Best counter meals in town. Brilliant easy going old fashioned atmosphere. In door and outdoor areas are great in summer. James squire on tap. I want to live there....

My Local. I always look forward to meeting friends at the George. Relaxing, laid back and welcoming are just some of the terms I could use to describe my local. After the recent outside refurbishments, as well as the addition of the new beer garden, things are only getting better. <br/><br/>Don't expect to dine and drink here on a budget, as meals and beverages can be pricey. On the other hand, the food is decent, as well as the portion sizes, and the atmosphere is one that the locals fight for (I strongly suggest making a reservation before dining). I've noticed that the George is very family-friendly, yet also caters to couples who are looking for a quiet, intimate sit down meal. Simply choose between al fresco in the warmer months, an inside booth, or a shady area under the aged tree covering the beer garden.

A Pub Dining Experience With Mediocre Food. Getting a bit off the main drag of Canberra (Northbourne Ave) can open your eyes to more of what Canberra offers. Yes Canberra is the capitol of Australia, but remember there are a large number of inhabitants in and around the capitol, many of whom have seen the growth of this beautiful region over the past 50 years. They live and dine outside of the conventional center of the city (visitors often limiting their choices to only this condensed area), so we thought we'd see for ourselves where the locals live and dine. If one is looking for a pub experience similar to those in the UK, the closest thing offered by our guide friend was The George (she was a server there in the '70's and they sponsored her when she traveled to the UK that same decade). We visited late one afternoon and found the décor very retro-UK "Pub-ish," many of Grammy's collectibles displayed throughout, and the menu offerings of the same antiquity. The pints were great: the food, however, was disappointing. Since the menu didn't reflect the gastro-pub adventurism of most British pubs today, we remained rather conventional in our choices. The fish in the fish&chips was rather "fishy" suggesting it was previously frozen and the Guinness pie was only passable, pre-made and seemingly reheated. The history of the Pub & Inn is dear to any Canberra resident who's lived there for a few decades. The Pub knows this and doesn't seem to try hard at keeping their existing patrons nor making happy any new guests. Overall, The George's bacon is largely dependent upon the loyalty of their long-time diners. In my opinion, if visiting the outlying communities of Canberra, you can make many better choices than The George.

Our search for fresh beer is relentless, an unforgiving process that eliminates dining destinations based solely on the types of beer on tap while we traipse around Canberra. For that fact alone, we stumbled upon George Harcourt Inn located in the picturesque village of Gungahlin in ACT, just a little off the border.  A quick phone call later, we were making a mad dash for the destination -  why  - 26 beers on tap. It's a no-brainer. Taking swigs off our Imperial pints of Feral Hop Hog , we perused the menu, a thorough list of the usual English pub grub staples. I'm guessing this spells comfort for those far away from home. The gaudy English cottage setup and lofty grass slopes leaning into the establishment exuding drifts of being in the shires. I was mostly intrigued by my surroundings, a novel and strangely snug environment that would have been better with more uninterrupted sunshine and less hailing winds. The dishes, like mum's cooking, are presented with little quirks, suitable for sharing not only for its heft but also for it's mild spice. We had the   Lambshanks  served   with English peas, gravy and mash. To be honest, I expected more... The countrymen' signature fastidiousness and attention to quality of produce seems to have gone on holiday and we were left with shanks that have obviously deteriorated in quality from repeated re-heating and cooling. The shrivelled outer skin of the shanks notably crustier and drier than its innards. While we squandered away our appetite on the former, a better alternative would be the  Kosciusko Beer Battered Barramundi ($19). It has got the portion sizes nailed, the satisfying spiced bubbled battered around the flaky fish teasing the eye with it's goddess like skin tone. The chips were excellent as well, gooey innards and crispy outer combo tackling even the toughest of judges at the table. The  Char grilled Black Angus Sirloin ($25) left a figuratively bitter note in the mouth, our decision to have it medium rare plainl
