Attending a friend's 40th last night, we thought we'd grab a drink and feed to kick off our night. A pint of cricketers arms and a glass of the Squealing Pig Sauv on tap- not a bad drop- with none of that mouthful of wine in the bottom of the glass, it felt like a never ending wine! $21 bucks for the pair, these people know how to keep the punters happy!
Next surprise was the hefty, and I mean hefty, serve of pork belly, spuds n broc! It looked gorgeous. Melt in your mouth with perfectly crispy crackle, they could have halved that serve and still charged the $25 bucks they had on it. There were no problems grabbing a T/A container as we had half the serve left over! The S&P squid, sweet potato fries and salad was absolutely delish and, a generous serve & gluten free (*coeliac note, chips cooked in same oil as beer battered chips).
Great facilities for functions, fire pits with regular top ups, plenty of seating add the friendly staff, great ambience leading to an all round great night. I'll be back, that's for sure.
Amazing helpful staff
Great ambience
I ordered the famous schnitzel and it tasted yummmy
Highly recommend this place for a late night drinks and dinner with friends
This pub is clearly popular as it was fairly packed on a Wednesday night! The architects designed the building to look like a traditional half-timbered English pub, with the strings of lights outdoors making it very inviting. Inside, the low beams are strung with old teacups, teapots and other crockery which only adds to the warm and welcoming feel.
The menu is traditional pub fare, but with a modern twist. The roast carrot salad was tasty, but the sweet potato chips were my favourite. My companions enjoyed the different burgers they had, while the table next to us looked satisfied by the huge serving of calamari!
Excellent pub for family dinners or catch ups with friends.
So far so good.
Cam here for dinner and a beer and not expecting to much after reading a few of the reviews..
It's a great set up and the atmosphere seemed great. Plenty of outdoor area to relax and a grassed area for kids to run around on. They have a perfect area for live music but didn't have anyone playing.
Food was pretty disappointing. as most of the reviews have said "the chips where great.... "
Overall service was pretty good, beer selection and atmosphere are great but the food needs work.
Good for a Sunday session with snacks if a band was playing.
Really impressed with the tap beer selection currently at the George - among some of the usuals they've also got the Twos Bird Taco, Asahi Black and Feral Smoked Porter. All of the bar staff are knowledgeable regarding the beers and happy to have a chat about them. Love going on a sunny Sunday afternoon and sitting outside watching the world (and motorbikes) go by.
A classic english pub, bit pricey & posh, but atmosphere is well worth it !. This pub makes you feel as if you are in London. :)
This is next to the miniature park (cockington green garden). We tried the "famous pot pie" and London sandwhich. both comes with chips and salad, very generous portion. goes down well with a wide selection of beer they have.
2 mains and beer will set you back about $55. they have a nice fireplace, and plenty of outdoor seating. we really liked the atmosphere and the toilet is surprisingly clean and spacious ! is that cesar stone ??? waaat...
will visit again next time we are in the neighborhood.
Cozy friendly atmosphere of an old English pub. Great food. Good prices.
They'll always try to fit you in. I've turned up to the George a couple of times without a booking, and the same again with, and they've always been pleasant but absolutely chockers and busy. They've always made the effort to re-arrange to fit you in if required, and the food itself is good quality pub meals.
Best counter meals in town. Brilliant easy going old fashioned atmosphere. In door and outdoor areas are great in summer. James squire on tap. I want to live there....
My Local. I always look forward to meeting friends at the George. Relaxing, laid back and welcoming are just some of the terms I could use to describe my local. After the recent outside refurbishments, as well as the addition of the new beer garden, things are only getting better.
Don't expect to dine and drink here on a budget, as meals and beverages can be pricey. On the other hand, the food is decent, as well as the portion sizes, and the atmosphere is one that the locals fight for (I strongly suggest making a reservation before dining). I've noticed that the George is very family-friendly, yet also caters to couples who are looking for a quiet, intimate sit down meal. Simply choose between al fresco in the warmer months, an inside booth, or a shady area under the aged tree covering the beer garden.
A great feed for lunch with the family after visiting Cockington Green.
Instantly when walking into the premises, I feel like I was back in the UK in a traditional English pub, the place looks great. 👌
The food was great also and a good selection in the menu. Well presented and tasted good.
The family friendly part threw me a little bit, we were kind of hoping to see a kids playground within, but could only see a small section for kids which had some old toys and blocks in there.
The kids high chairs need some TLC; we used some wipes on them before we used one and the amount of dirt/grime we wiped off was gross.
Nice old English pub style but can get very busy. Food was good and pretty quick compared to the amount of patrons there on a Sunday. Plenty of parking across the road and you can reserve tables for lunch. Live music on a Sunday. Great outdoor areas and good for families.
A few people also brought their dogs as well.
Just had lunch, it is our 2nd time here, and the food is absolutely amazing!! Pretty good value, too. The meals are huge and soooo delicious. I had the steak and Guinness pie, can't believe I finished it all. Can't wait to come back again. Even our 6 year old managed to polish off her huge lunch. Would give 6 stars if I could. 😋
Best pub in the Canberra with plenty of parking, food and beer 10/10, nicest looking english pub should be heritage listed in my opinion, if you haven’t been here your missing out.
Great outdoor seating, gluten free options (intolerance - can't confirm coeliac safe), area for the little ones to play, and great steak!
English pub, pub food, good beer with an atmosphere to match.
I feel The George is a bit of an institution. Great building with enough areas to suit what your after and the occasional band.
Food wise is above expectations, you really shouldn't go too wrong.
The only downside is its a little far out so make sure someone is driving.
If your after some pub grub and a few drinks you can't go past The George.
Always a good place to go on quiet weekends. Lots of outdoor space and heaters so it works for families or large groups. Perfect during those warmer summer months, plenty of shade and usually there's some type of live music
