Reviews The German Cake Shop

My husband and I went there for lunch. Neither of us was particularly hungry but we wanted some tradition german dishes. We avoided other places because the meals seemed too large but were happy to see smaller options here.

My husband ordered a wurst which he enjoyed. I also tasted it and was impressed. Unfortunately, my Chicken and Avocado croissant was not good. The chicken was dry, the avocado brown and the croissant slightly overcooked. Avocado goes brown easily and it's not difficult to overcook croissants but with the chicken being dry there was no redeeming feature.

However, I did order a custard strudel (cherry) for dessert and it was delicious. I don't even know how to describe how good it was. The cherry filling tasted good. I find a lot of cherry flavoured foods taste like bad cough medicine, not this. This was fresh and juicy. The pastry was well proportioned to the filling and the cream had a nice hint of vanilla in it.

The serving staff in the dining area were lovely and helpful. At the counter, things were disorganised and crowded which gave a bad impression. The Manager was trying his best but seemed to be trying too hard to be in everything. I suspect he might need to learn to trust his staff and limit himself to one area of the business, not micromanaging everything.

Overall I would suggest enjoying the traditional German food and not worrying about anything else.

This is the truest German shop in hanhdorf. Have a joke with the cranky German and taste his beautiful meals and pastries. Well worth a visit and it’s old works charm took me back to Düsseldorf. Love it

So it’s a kinda daggy, old fashioned type place. But sometimes if you want the authentic, honest food then this is how it comes. I love this bakery, great pastries and breads. I’ve not eaten here, not had coffee as I suspect it would disappoint. The owner may seem a little gruff but I’ve had many a chat with him about current affairs and whatnot, I guess I also like it when you get a good human interaction like that in a small village.

For us the star is, are, the strudels. We ate far too many in our first years in the Hills, we also would take one interstate for people who don’t have such amazing bakeries *coughbrisbanesydney* at first we stayed safe with the apple and poppy but the winner is the sour cherry. Y u m

We had a brunch here as we look cozy from outside. When we came in we looked a delicious pastries inside the pastry case. We decided to order sausage roll, meat pasty, ham and cheese omelette and blackforest cake, coffee mocha. All were nice, can't complaint. Is just the service wasn't good enough. The oldman which I reckon the owner wasn't smile and rigid, lack of customer service.
The cafe looks pretty, lots of antique stall and stuff. It's nice to hangout and have a chat with friends, family or your partner here as the ambiance is nice.

Popped in for some awesome German pretzels. They are made the authentic way.

Simple but pleasant menu.

Beautiful traditional setting and a great homely place 😀

Nice atmosphere at this place with all the decorations, clocks etc. Had the poppyseed strudel which was very nice. Let down in the coffee department however.

I have a love/hate relationship with popular bakeries. I love it when there are a lot of people there cause it ensures quick turnover. I hate it because bakeries are already tiny, with limited walking space, theres never a clear service area and im too shy to speak up when someone pushes in. I picked german cake shop purely for the fact that the three times i passed this place in an hour, there was a constant stream of people in and out. Go where the locals go eh?
I like that they sell cakes for half price, the day off. Im not picky and i got a beesting cake with its luscious fluffy sponge and heavenly cream and a dense, flakey poppyseed strudel. I may have arm barred someone for a spot in the glass counter free for all. It was worth it though. Man i wish they made beesting cakes in brisbane!

Walking around Hahndorf I was seeking something easy to eat while I continued my walk, so I ventured in and found a great range of Haus Made bakery items.

The pepper pie had great pepper flavor with real pieces of real beef that has been slowly braised.

After I consumed the pie I ventured back for a custard danish which was very good.

I would return for more, thank you.

Came here for the apple strudel, when in Rome. The cake itself tasted really nice, quite authentic too! The nice whipped cream went really well with the hot pastry. It was, however, slightly sad how the waiter forgot our order, and we had to go up to the counter to ask for it. But the taste of the food more than made up for the blunder.

In search of a delicious slice of cheesecake, my friend and I veered off the Hahndorf Main Street and into the German Cake Shop. The homemade strudels took our eye, so each of us opted for a half strudel, eat-in, with cream. I had the more traditional apple strudel and it was delicious! My friend decided to be alternative and chose the cherry variety. Both were excellent - the cherry more tart than the sweeter apple. The pastry was perfect. I would've loved a scoop of ice cream instead of the cream (and probably could have, had I asked). At $6 the half strudel was just the right amount.

The staff were welcoming and friendly - the bakery had a distinctively family-owned vibe - and our waiter apologised for the strudel wait, despite it taking little time at all.

We sat in the small outside garden and enjoyed the winter sun filtering through the trees. A very enjoyable experience, and I'll be keen to pop back in next time I'm in Hahndorf to try a slice of the apricot strudel which was left wanting as we chose its apple and cherry friends.

Beesting cakes are nice but not the case for the owners!! The lady was rude to Asian customers and complained about us sitting there for too long and didnt order anything new

Amazing Beesting. I've never had anything else here, it is just that good! It doesn't matter how full we are or what else we have eaten that day. My partner and I always finish any trip to the Adelaide Hills with a Beesting!! Yum

One slab of very thick ham, two sausages and another slab of processed meat plus two breadroll for making sausage rolls plus some sides including potato salad and sauerkraut. I managed to fit most of this in my belly but it was a tough going. I think I'll stick to sausages next time...
