If you have kids you need to visit The Spare Room. This cafe has literally turned their entire courtyard into a kids area equipped with jumping castles, a cubby-house and heaps of toys. Generally I've found food to be pretty average at these kid friendly cafes, but the crew here still serve up a really decent brunch and coffee.
What a great concept for kids. That jumping castle keeps the kids entertained for ages which was good as the food and service was very very slow. However the wait was almost worth it with the lamb burger being beautiful and tender and the calamari salad fresh and tasty. Amenities could do with a good deep clean but over all has a lot going for it.
If you have kids this cafe is a must! This is the most kid friendly cafe I've ever been to in Melbourne while still having good food and coffee.
Went here on the weekend. The food and the value for money is ridiculous! Yes, it is a little more oriented towards parents with kids (large play area out the back), but the food was brilliant. I ate the Reuben with chips, plus my wife’s beans. Excellent balance of flavours, originality and solid portion size. Delicious fresh made juice to top it off. Super service as well. Very considerate and attentive without being invasive. Go here.
Trekking out to Hampton, it's nice to see a few different style cafe's and eateries that can excite locals to enjoy a meal out. One of them is The Spare Room, who seems to have been reborn, in a way, after experiencing a fire last year. The cafe itself looks quite ordinary, with a decor that looks to need a revamp to keep up with the trendy cafe's catching people's attention these days. However, the strong focus on families in the local area would be happy with the back seating area and attached playground for kids to have fun with.
The food and drinks menu offers the usual breakfast and lunch options, with a focus on seasonal ingredients and flavours that impress. A few specials are also available, and change every fortnight or so. One of the dishes we ordered was a special - the Autumn Pulled Lamb Salad, which impressed us with its vibrant coloured presentation and its well balanced flavours and textures. Fresh ingredients such as garden peas, quinoa, asparagus, heirloom tomatoes, roasted cauliflower chips and kale balance out the tender lamb strands.
For a menu mainstayer, the Reuben Sandwich features silverside cornbeef in small strips, dill pickles, Swiss cheese, organic sauerkraut, mustard relish and a generous side of addictive herb salted fries. Although just a sandwich to some, this particular sandwich is something I'd order again and again if I lived in the area.
Just finished lunch here and had to review it!
Staff were fantastic, very friendly and chef came out to ensure we enjoyed our meals- which were delicious, and the coffee and fresh juices were divine
Loved it and we will be back
Thank you guys
Lovely staff! Had the organic porridge which was really yum, decently priced although would have preferred a bit more fruit! Staff were very nice
Went for lunch with the kids. Couldn't be more welcoming and relaxed. Staff were very friendly, coffee and food was great and very reasonably priced.
Still the best chai in the area! I'm addicted! (Prana chai, but done the best for kilometres around.) Fairly friendly service and good with the regulars. A fair range on the menu, but I haven't sampled much from the new menu - some options I'll try shortly no doubt.

Great Cafe! The staff is very kind and accommodating. Vicki is a source of great wisdom and smiles! They do have a kids area in the back, with jumping castle, toys and a cubby house, so parents would also enjoy taking a coffee while the little ones play.
The food is really good, I didn't try the coffee yet, but I assume that's just as nice.
We had brunch here. Separate area for families with kids, so you can eat without noticing children, or watch them as they play. The food was absolutely delicious, as was the coffee. The play area is outstanding. A little chilly first thing in the morning, so dress warm if you have kids who'll want to play, but I will definitely be back!
Was actually meant to go to another cafe, their kitchen wasn't open. So ended up here. Glad we did! Husband ordered a coffee and pancakes, I got the breakfast burger and some tea. Service was great, attentive staff. Food was great. My hubby who doesn't like sweet good enjoyed the pancakes. I loved my breakfast burger (admittedly I gave my hash brown to hubby-it was too much of a mouthful otherwise). Husband loved his coffee. I'd definitely go back and get the same order. Cost was approximately $40 incl two drinks.
Impressed with the quality of food & coffee. Awesome room out the back for families with kids, parents able to supervise the kids while they play in the rear yard with toys or on the jumping castle.
Just enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast that was delightfully presented. Friendly helpful staff. Love this local cafe and so worth a visit. Try it out soon!
Food is delicious and the play area is the best in Bayside! The bouncy castle is our favourite. Such a great place for families to enjoy lunch.

Lovely redevelopment of the cafe. Friendly staff, great menu options. The play space out back is a total winner 😁
