Review Tinto - Hawthorn

Delicious traditional Spanish cuisine, expertly prepared and presented👌. Friendly and helpful staff👍. Got a great suggestion from Paola that we might be initially ordering too much😀. So we had a perfect dinner with tortilla patatas, ensalada de coliflor, paella pollo chorizo, crema catalana and tarta de Santiago👌. Beautifully decorated restaurant.🙂 Would love to have some soft background Spanish guitar music 🎸.

This local Spanish restaurant serves a good range of food that tastes great. The staff are attentive and the spot is nice for catch up with friends or a meal with family.

A perfect culinary experience. Our tapas, mains and deserts were incredible. The wait staff were knowledgeable and very attentive. Everything was cooked to perfection. A very cosy, ambient place. Highly recommend

I have been dining at Tinto on and off over the past 7-8 years. A friend and I dined there last night and it was as good as ever. Beautiful food, attentive but non intrusive service. Excellent. Highly recommend.

Stunning. Service : attentive, warm, not execeesive. Food : stunning, perfectly portioned and flavoured. Wine and beverages : couldn't have been better and more appropriately matched, and modified according to dietary requirements like the meal was. Fabulous owners and operators. Bloody lovely evening, thank you!

Lovely tapas bar with good vibes. Friendly front of house. Will definitely be back.

Although the calamari and anchovy dishes were good, the service left much to be desired. Twice we ordered and the staff misunderstood the order, one staff member was abrupt from the start which did not make our evening enjoyable. Would go back for the anchovies and calamari.

Fantastic food, atmosphere, Jacky was the perfect date thank you for making it the best ever.

I was so fortunate to be taken to Tinto for my birthday. This was a most memorable meal! The service was exemplary and the food was sublime. I'm still dreaming of eating the anchovies on bread fried in duck fat with hay-smoked butter. A must for anyone dining in. This restaurant is busy but deserves to be even more so, every dish was perfect. Thoroughly recommended (if you couldn't tell...)

An excellent high quality restaurant with specialised staff and a menu to return for , as a Queenslander visiting for Melbourne wine and food week. Obviously we left the best to our last! Absolutely superb and full of surprise.

Wow what a lovely meal. We have been to Tinto a few times and we always leave with a full belly, a huge smile on our faces. The owners are so beautiful and welcoming, they have a wonderful menu and fantastic wine selection. We will be back and we will bring more people to experience the delicious we have had. Thank you so very much xxx

We have been visiting Tinto for some time now, with friends, as a couple, as a family. It is a fabulous space. Quick drink, tasty snack, leisurely dinner, bar seats, dining room, courtyard or kitchen table, Tinto does it beautifully every time. The staff are delightful; knowledgable and passionate about food and wine, and always focused on providing a wonderful experience. Make sure you order the sardines, and if there are barramundi wings on the specials you MUST try them.

My boyfriend and I live up the road and constantly walked past, piquing our intrigue. We finally came last night for his birthday and were enchanted with the place. Gorgeous food, a beautiful full-bodied red wine (Matsu) and we had the lovely Diane serving us who is clearly a pro at her job. Carla was also a gem rearranging our booking time for us. Can't wait to come again! Thankyou!

Great food and great service, it's a Melbournes must! Highly recommend, as it's much better than any other Spanish restaurant in Melbourne. Oh...and of course I can say that because I'm Spnish

Loved the food wine and the cosy atmosphere on a cold winter Melbourne evening

Great place! Great food! Cozy ambiance! Thanks Maria - the owner - for the very welcome! We came here 2 times in 3 nights staying in Hawthorn!

Really worth dining here and experiencing the food and wine - great restaurant

Not only my favourite group of hospitality people but also one of my favourite food spots that now also serves my favourite Antonio Luce Sangiovese and amazing Rogues Lane Shiraz. Almost 40 years in the hospitality business, I have seen them come and go - hopefully this place stays around as it's simple perfect. Without all the pretensions and things other Melbourne restaurants are annoyingly focusing on and not a single sommelier in sight !! LOVE IT !!
Carolina Laing
Love the traditional Spanish food, matching wines, cocktails and of course the cosy understated decor.

Excellent food, great selection of wines and attentive service- what more could you ask for......

Great little restaurant with a cool vibe! We booked here as a group of 4 and shared all the meals. The sangria was delicious - it instantly took me right back to my visit to Spain many years ago- and service was reasonably prompt but not overbearing. We got the pimientos, calamari, chorizo, patatas bravas, beef cheek, green beans, and the pumpkin and goats cheese pastry - everything was super tasty and we’d easily get it again!

We found a very cozy place and a warm welcome from the owners knowing that we were coming from Barcelona. We tried some of the most recommended dishes such as the lamb meatballs, fabulous oxtail, delicious cod & squid croquettes, with a tasty Catalan cream for dessert. Everything was really delicious, also the Jamón w Pa amb tomàquet (ham&tomato bread), and the flavors were like authentic Catalan/Spanish cuisine. I don´t know if we will return sometime again because Barcelona is a bit far from Melbourne, but who knows...

After reading all the raving reviews we really wanted to try Tinto. It’s a reasonably small place filled with ppl, including a couple of big groups. Have to say, lucky it was just the two of us. Any bigger group, we wouldn’t be able to hear each other.

Service was friendly. The waitress recommended us the number of dishes we should order from each section of the menu. The Artisan vermut tumeron was delicious, probably my favorite item for the night. Everything else were less exciting. We had Salmon Curado, it was beautifully presented. The Patatas Bravas was nice but not something you can’t make at home. Chorizo a la Sidra was very average. Croquetas de Jamón Serrano was nice but not outstanding. The squid filled with minced prawn etc in squid ink was not my kind of thing,, even though I love seafood. (It was very small too.)

So 4 small dishes and 1 main dish with 2 drinks came to $120 for the two of us. I wouldn’t say it was one of the best tapas I’ve had.

[RATE BASED ON FOOD ASPECT] Hawthorn’s dining resident, Tinto is turning heads with a seasonal menu that is full of vibrancy, character and the flavours of Spain.

Well-respected in the hospitality industry, Head Chef Nacho Castells Rusiñol is a vocational chef with an extensive background in Spanish, Mediterranean, Catalan, French, British and international cuisine. Castells’ resume includes stints as the Head Chef at the prestigious El Borracho de Oro (Birmingham, UK) as well as Michelin starred restaurants around the world. His passion and respect for produce results in a stunning menu at Tinto which is a celebration of hearty traditional and soulful Spanish cuisine with a modern touch and expert execution.

The space is open yet intimate and reminiscent of a Spanish street bar. A rustic timber surround makes up the front bar, and pale tiles wrap around the front bench. Wooden furnishings are infused throughout the venue, to create warmth and a sense of community.

The wine list is made up of equal parts Australian and Spanish wines. We highly recommend the Alvaro Palacios 'Camins del Priorat'. A robust and dark-fruited wine with hints of earthiness and delicious tannin structure, it was a great accompaniment to our Spanish feast.

We commenced our culinary journey at Tinto with a selection of tapas. Castells’ take on the humble Patatas Bravas graced our presence first. Thoroughly modern and simply delicious, we loved the hand cut and confit potato cylinders topped with aioli and salsa brava.

A delectable selection of croquettes were next – each as delightful as the next. The jamon croquettes were beautifully creamy while the calamari croquette with squid ink boasted depth and flavour while the cod fish croquette boasted an addictive salinity.

For mains the Pulpo Gallego was outstanding and was our favourite dish from our visit. Tender grilled octopus was served with puréed purple potato and samphire atop aromatic black rice. It was a rustic dish that was simply comfort food at its best.

For meat lovers the lamb shank certainly gratifies. Slow roasted for hours, the lamb shank had a lovely pistachio crust and simply fell off the bone. The tender meat went perfectly with the accompanying prune emulsion.

Our savoury courses concluded with a popular Spanish dish – the paella. Castells’ Paella Valenciana was exquisite. Cooked with a traditional mix of chicken, fish, mussels, vegetables and saffron, the paella delivered a great amount of flavour. Served in a paellera (paella pan), there was a beautifully crusty bottom which had the infused aromas of being cooked over an open fire.

Dessert time continued the trend of the evening – wonderful. The Tarta de Queso was utterly irresistible. Think luscious and perfectly baked Menorcan cheese cake served with refreshing strawberry ice cream and thick gooey toffee sauce. Delicious!

With Head Chef Nacho Castells Rusiñol at the helm, Tinto brings Spanish flair to Hawthorn with its outstanding offerings. Expect flavoursome dishes and friendly service with modern twists along the way that will take you straight to Spain.

Ambience, decor and service all Top Notch however the food was a bit of a let down. Was expecting more for the price tag. Paella was our favourite dish but still didn’t have the flavour to match. Small portions for tapas especially the garlic prawns which cost $28. At least the chicken skewers had a nice flavour.

Nice little neighbourhood restaurant. The food was peasant but I wasn’t blown away by any of the dishes. Between two we ordered the jamon croquettes, the salmon carpaccio, the chorizo, the calamari and the prawn cutlets. The croquettes were probably my favourite.
Princess Got The Hungries
This place really is a neighborhood gem. The food is simple food done beautifully, from the tasty blue cheese croquettes, deceptively simple dish of anchovies, to the masterpiece of the calamari paella. Service is also excellent: attentive, friendly, and very helpful.

You've got to try it out.

Amazing restaurant. Staff were fabulous and the food was really delicious. Highly recommend. Menu is seasonal. Great sharing plates. Real Spanish experience

Third time coming here. It’s a nice cozy place, great atmosphere with fantastic service. Good food and an amazing wine selection also. Gone up in price recently, but that’s Melbourne for you. Good experience nonetheless

Lovely restaurant! amazing service and the food is brilliant. It's hard to find good Spanish in Melbourne and this is certainly the best you get. I have been there several times and I think it's a great place to try lots on the menu.
Joe
Ambience was quite nice and warm, the restaurant nicely appointed too.

Service seemed rather disjointed and inefficient in what was not a very busy night. We had to follow up on our order and we also brought the wrong dish on 2 occasions.

The food - eggplant chips were fantastic, everything else from the garlic prawns to the croquettas, chorizo all missed the mark and the Spanish doughnuts were a terrible disappointment, they were either dry and brittle or still doughy.

We were also told that for 2 people we should only order 3-4 plates to share. The portion sizes were so small that we could of ordered at least another 2 dishes though by the time we were served and realised we had not had enough food it was too late to consider ordering more.

Went with another couple.
When we arrived we were told our table wasn't ready to wait at the bar then 5-10 minutes later two other parties arrived same number of people and were both seated before us - not a good start.
There doesn't seem to be any organisation in relation to which waitress looks after you, you either get them all asking the same question one after the other or you get no service at all.
Food was okay but not great and expensive for what you get.
Won't go back plenty of other better places around.
They really need to look at their organisation.
Belle Eats Melbourne
Delicious Spanish/Italian food in a cosy wine bar. I had the meatballs with tomato salsa and melt in your mouth whipped feta with a glass of sangria. Amazing. My dinner companion chose the slow cooked lamb with couscous which was apparently very good too. We then shared a cheese platter. The food was all very lovely but the helpings were on the small side and it's not a cheap place. The service was a bit indifferent. If the staff improved, I'd rate the place a 4.5. Will try it again.

Delicious food and great service! A fantastic restaurant in the heart of Hawthorn. You must try the eggplant chips. Plenty of gluten free options and the best gluten free bread I've ever had!
PW Lou
Lovely atmosphere and definitely a place to bring a date. The staff were nice and friendly. The food was good but a bit on the pricier side. All in all a lovely experience.

Food is ok, the main dish fish&mussel is pretty fresh. BUT the service is pretty slow, after tapas, took 40-45mins to serve our main course which annoys me. And the staff did not say anything about the late coming dishes. And the customers came much later than us almost finished dinner, which made me more annoyed.
Andylovestoeat
Perfect for a Friday night dinner and drinks hangout. Make sure you make a booking, they fill up fast. The calamari has got to be my favourite! Great vibe 👌🏼

Burwood Rd gem that is consistently busy (try to book ahead). Spanish tapas and share plates (menu and special board), thoughtfully prepared, well executed and tasty. Easy to enjoy a few nice wines and snacks. Try the Pinchos (chicken skewers with yoghurt), the peppers). Good local.

I went here for my birthday last Friday night and was delighted by everything they had to offer and more. I rang to book at short notice and despite being extremely busy and under pressure they made the effort to accomodate me. After some careful checking by staff we were treated to a quiet table for two in the courtyard. Just what I wanted for a non milestone birthday celebration. The exterior and interior of the tapas restaurant is quaint, provides warmth and is dotted with character throughout. First up: drinks. Sangria jug (red) = very good. Starters: patatas bravas was the name if I remember rightly. This tapas plate was satiating like a home cooked meal and a perfect way to start an autumn sit down dinner. Further satisfying our palates was a blue swimmer crab dish atop a cake of avacado alongside other delightful flavours and textures all perfectly balanced and proportioned. My friend loved the lamb meatballs served in a hot cast iron pot and drizzled with a yoghurt sauce and a refreshing green salad with orange segments and radicchio delighted the senses also. Dessert we had a chocolate flourless cake with cumquat, also amazing. Will be back. Staff were attentive, described the specials well and were knowledgable. An espaĂąol speaking waiter added to the Hispanic experience and was lovely to converse with.

This is a lovely place for a small group and intimate gathering. The lighting is nice and cosy, the food is welcoming. Nice restaurant in Hawthorn East and down the road from me so would keep returning even if it's a bit expensive.

Another local gem in hawthorn - among a ground of random shops, tinto serves up Spanish in a fancy yet rustic way! I loved the ox tongue (or cheek? Can't remember which cut) and the croquettes! Definitely give it a try!
Denis Fitzgerald
Great menu, with each item delicious. We were delighted by the food, service and atmosphere. A chat with the chef, and an accommodating maitre de just made our evening.

Had diner here on a Saturday night, they have a nice selection of wines and the service is pretty smooth and good. The food all looks great however could do with a bit more seasoning to add more taste to it. Overall the flavours were a bit blend at times and lack salt. Also I think it is hard to fit 8 dishes to share in 1-2 hours for the first seating diner. It is probably the fastest 8 course meal I ever had. All in all a nice place with a good vibe and cafe outfit.
Hanayoridango
One of my favourite local gems. If you love Spanish food, this is a must to try. A wide range of wine and tapas. The portion is generous, too. It's better to book as it gets quite busy on Friday and Saturday evenings.
AaronN
This joint served up some pretty tasty tapas dishes. The patatas bravas, and chicken skewers were delicious. The pork belly main was also really impressive. Service was super friendly, would definitely return.

Incredibly delicious food, beautiful wines, and warm service. Feel very lucky to have such an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant in our local hood. Highly recommend.

Tinto is a wonderful local gem with food and atmosphere good enough for a special occasion. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. We mainly ordered off the specials board, the bread fried in duck fat with smokey butter and anchovies was divine! The cod croquettes, butter fish and the quail dish were also very good. Definitely worth coming back to.

Enjoyed our evening at Tinto. It was busy but not hurried and the service was very good. Highly recommend the Pescado which was absolutely delicious.
Fangmaster
Can highly recommend. Great food. Good value. Entree, main, coffee, glass of wine $60. Great service. Love that Spanish accent. Shared four entrees and all were good. And blackboard specials for mains were a winner. A winter Wednesday night was a relaxed busy.
Warren Fraser
Great place to eat and drink atmosphere is warm and the food, yummy, potato croquettes best I've tried, same with the anchovies, loved the mussels and the pan fried pork, all washed down with good Spanish wine, cant beat it.
Sweet Chilli
A recommendation from a friend who read the reviews. Delicious meal, wine and service. Starters: croquette were divine, gnocchi not so great. Prawn special was divine. All in all a lovely meal although pricey.
The Epicurean
Decent Spanish in Hawthorn. Worth a try if you are in the neighbourhood.
Buzzing even on a Wednesday night.
Cocktails were great. Would recommend both the Ole Ole and Orange Mojito.

Called at short notice on a Thursday night mid-March, lovely sounding lady on the phone says they have room for two if we can leave before 8 pm. We live within a few minutes’ drive so absolutely no issue. Rocked up a little after 6pm and were seated straight away. From the moment of arriving we felt looked after, the waitress was extremely professional, sat us down and gave us food and drinks menus. We know the menus of many Hawthorn establishments, yet this was our first time at tinto, so we asked the waitress to suggest what is popular. She proved to be extremely knowledgeable about the food, and what we may like and came up with some great choices, generous portions, brought out at regular intervals, and all six dishes were delicious.

Excellent service, lovely ambience, fabulous food, what more can you ask for? We’ll definitely go back, absolute winner! And now my favourite tapas bar in Hawthorn.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Tinto sits inconspicuously in a quiet section of Burwood Road, offering the proposition of an authentic Spanish wine bar, with a focus on tapas and raciones. It’s a quaint, sophisticated space with wooden décor, including along Spanish-style bar – a warm and relaxed, yet sophisticated environment in which to enjoy Spanish share plates and a robust wine list. The restaurant is full of what seemed to be locals and it’s pumping for a Tuesday night.

Quite disappointed by the service of this place. Came here for their early dinner sitting under a booking and was seated near the kitchen even though the restaurant wasn't even half full.
We ordered wine and a selection of tapas plates from both their menu and specials board. The waitress who served us saw me browsing photos on zomato. She laughed and snidely commented "I laugh when people do that as our menu changes all the time." Such an uncalled for comment as we did choose the croquettes and calamari based on other reviewers' recommendations.
The food itself I found average at best. Anything fried is usually good so the croquettes were ok, the mussels were simple, the duck fat toast with anchovies nothing to rave about, and the calamari was the same as I'd find anywhere else.
We were reminded that the sitting was to end at 8pm as the waitress came at 7:45pm to clear our dishes even though we were not yet done. We weren't yet done with our wine either but a couple of minutes later she asked if we wanted dessert? Feeling pressured to finish quick, we replied no. She then asked us if we wanted coffees? Again we said no as we didn't want to be rushed. I can only imagine the service we'd have received if we had said yes. Our bill came to $100+ for 2 people and yet as we left I felt our patronage wasn't appreciated. I doubt I will return.

TINTO (555 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn East). You wont find these guys on instagram but trust me when i say this, find one friend and go here- and lets be honest, this is one of those places that will leave you selfishly not wanting anyone else to find, it will instantly become one of those "our places", but really everyone needs to go here.
TINTO, is a TRUE Spanish Tappas house, built on exceptional service from people who just understands old school charm and friendliness. The moment we walked in, our spot by the front window was ready waiting for us. Within 2 mins of settling in, our waitress was ready with the night's tappas specials, which included descriptions of where the produce was sourced, type of cuts of meat/fish and flavour profiles. Photos of our self made degustation to follow!

Really great little find out of the city. Last time i went here we were blown away by the dessert, and was equally impressed this time with the lemon and almond tart, which, although not being what i expected was moist and delicious. The croquettes were also amazing, ( but i looooove croquettes, can never resist them on a menu) along with the calamari, squid ink aioli and saltbush dish, I've never seen saltbush before and wasn't 100% sure it could be eaten, but i really liked the salty crunch it provided. The pork cheek was too porky for me though and we probably shouldn't have ordered the anchovies, since they weren't really our thing.

Well it's taken me a while, but it was well worth the wait! Tinto has been slowly making their mark on the burbs of Hawthorn to make this suburb the new destination dining hub of Melbourne.
We were there for an early evening booking on a Thursday night and by the time we left at 7.30pm they were queuing out the door to get in!
This Spanish restaurant has a fabulous menu and drinks list and we were quickly seated at the table by our friendly waitress and offered a drink straight away. We started with a couple of cocktails with a great Gin & Tonic and a Vodka & orange.
We decided to select 6 small tapas plates to share and everyone that came out was a standout! My favourite was the anchovies on bruschetta and the meatballs and the croquetas de jamon!!! Extremely yummy!! We had more than enough and will definitely be back to eat our way through the menu.
✔️✔️✔️✔️

Second great meal here last night. Tasty food, good wine and a buzzing atmosphere. Loved the calves liver apple and fennel salad (blackboard special), and of course the signature chocolate so press for dessert!
Leanne Backhouse
Have to say.. I'm disappointed. The food was ok.. But what really got me was that we were asked to leave from our table twice. I've worked in hospitality and understand that their might be sessions. But our plates were cleared at 7.57. We were asked if we would like desert or coffee in which we replied no.. God knows what would happen if we said yes!! We were finishing off our glasses of wine and within 5 minutes we were asked to leave twice because someone was waiting for the table... Hello! What if we had said yes for desert? And we only had a small amount of wine we wanted to finish. The way they asked us to leave was embarrassing and rude and it left us feeling unwanted. We had ordered starters, mains and sides and because of the customer service I would happily never go back.

Another great find! If you love Spanish food, this is the place to be. Paola, our host was fantastic & gave us some great tips for when we travel to Spain. Will come again.

Booked last minute and got a table at the bar by the window.

Nice little restaurant - love the copper lights and ambience of the place.

Ordered the fizzy sangria which was just yum yum yum!

Croquettes and chorizo were on the menu - which were v tasty!! The meatballs were nice and flavoursome - not dry at all!

The peppers with the rabbit special were yummy as, as was the calamari!

All in all - a really wonderful restaurant - would definitely be back!

Yum Yum Yum Yum YUM!!
popped in for a late dinner for 1. was sat at a lovely spot on the window bar.
had the lamb meat balls, house made bread and a glass of white.
seriously... cant fault it !
Everything was simply perfect
thanks

Food 8/10
Drink 9/10
Service 9/10

I would like to applaud the skinny waiter with medium length curly hair for his wonderful service throughout the night. Despite it being fairly busy on Valentine's day, he patiently gave us suggestions and descriptions of the food items. He was extremely well mannered and helpful.

I forgot the drink name that I had ordered more than 1/2yr ago, he immediately went and found it for me. He seemed a bit nervous, but the restaurant is very luck to have him there. For such service, I will go back even if the food was just mediocre (which it is not).

Food:
-Tapas
Coca was fantastic, it's like a mini crispy base pizza with a touch of blue cheese. Absolutely delightful, my gf loved it. Beware, strong tasting.

Anchoas (specials) was nothing special, I had a a similar dish last time I came here, this one was a disappointment. Bread was burnt on the sides.

-Mains
Rabbit Meat (Racejo? ; specials), can't rely rmember exact spelling, pardon me, this dish was great in that the dish was very flaoursome. It doesn't have the strong rabbit meat smell which you will get at some restaurants. I loved it, hope they can make this a standard menu item. Definite recommend.

Ox cheek, good dish to get if you are after something meaty. Very standard Spanish dish, no wow-factor, good but a tad dry. Last time it was very tender, probably an oversight today.

Drinks
Complimentary champagne for Valentine's, definitely made me and my gf very happy the moment we sat down!

Lime/mint Mocktail (description)
Best mint mocktail I've had around Melbourne, puts The Conservatory's exact same drink to shame. Lots of fresh juice and mint leaves. Even after the ice melted the drink was still full of flavour and not bland/watery. Again, I forgot to ask the name of the drink...

The restaurant was very good overall, great service and short waits for food. Definite go again and will recommend.
Berecka
My favourite restaurant! Staff are wonderful, sangrias +all their cocktails are spot on and the food is even better than anything I actually found in Spain. On my trip to find amazing spanish food in Barcelona, all I was thinking about was a meal at Tinto when I got home! Great atmosphere too!
Julia
Great local tapas bar with excellent food and wines. The specials are written in chalk on a blackboard running along the back wall and feature really inventive dishes, not just the usual offerings. The owners are generally working on the bar and are friendly and welcoming. All in all highly recommended.
Big Jim
Good local reliable tapas. The beef cheek always worth ordering. The fried salt bush with the calamares was an interesting touch. Friendly waiting staff a real bonus. Keep it going guys x

Did a walk by Saturday night with fingers crossed
Lovely lady was attentive straight away and tried a table but set up the bar for us immediately made us very welcome
Spanish Tapas style in Hawthorn and parked out the front
Brunswick St doesn't have that Saturday night
Opened with Spanish sav blanc and Barrow Boys pale ale
Let's get the party started
Our waitress ( who is owner) set out and explained everything we needed to know
Small portions basically but it's the way they are presented is the surprise
The flavors are exciting and are a taste bud sensation
Every flavor complements each other
The chef knows his stuff
The anchovy of duck fat sourdough even comes with your own tin of anchovy a nice fresh feel
Just enough pork belly with three way carrots and apricot glaze completened with a broccolini with black olive aloi to satisfy two people
Small portions tempted us to try the infused pineapple with fennel and chocolate mousse wafers that went snap and zing !!!
So refreshing on the palate and a great finale
A night to remember
Will tell our friends
Well done Tinto

Inlovewithbrunch
visited last night for dinner with friends and was very impressed! felt like a movida dining experience with the chalked specials board around the walls and tapas-style menu - but with a more laid-back local feel. were able to enjoy a number of dishes and a delicious sangria over an un-hurried 4 hours. great atmosphere and vibe and the hay-smoked butter is still lingering in my memory! hope to be back again soon.
Sarah Garner
One of my lovely locals. The two ladies that run the place are great and will help with choosing wine and yummy food if you like suggestions. I also feel comfortable there having a glass of wine by myself at the bar.
I took my dad there recently for a drink and some snacks and he ate much more than he usually does (sign of good food)!
Excellent wine list by the glass, very easy to just order a few sharing tapas plates then order more when you decide that you absolutely have to try something else that catches your eye.
Great specials board too.
Robert Rompante
Damn good tapas style menu. Wine list is extensive but no over the top and decor suits the restaurant to a tee. 10 out of 10 for me. Enjoy to all.

Had dinner here last night and absolutely loved it! The tapas style food and the atmosphere inside the restaurant were all great. The presentation of the food is beautiful and each dish had some complex tastes and textures which all complement each other well.

The service was also very good and even though the Spanish waiters weren't completely fluent in English, they were friendly and attentive. Tried a few of the specials on the wall and all were delicious! The duck fat fried sourdough and smoked butter had bold strong flavours. The confit chicken breast was juicy and tender and the added touch of crispy Brussel sprouts, artichoke and purĂŠe made the dish even better.

The chocolate dessert was superb, the flavour and texture of mandarin granita and freeze dried mandarin went well with the olive oil salted caramel and smooth chocolate mousse.
Pyro
Went for dinner with a friend of mine, very attentive and helpful. We had ordered the croquetas de jamon (croquettes), ensalada de colifor (cauliflower cooked three way), salmon crudo, albondigas (meatballs) and for dessert chocolate sorpresa
The croquettes cooked beautifully, crispy and light on the inside, cauliflower salad had numerous textures, quite interesting, salmon crudo, very delicate dish, meatballs, loads of sauce, was ok and the dessert, the blood orange granita was so good, the rest of it was pretty average. So must order the croquettes and desserts maybe miss. Quite pricey, small portions, might come back again

The staff are lovely and cheerful. It has a nice local vibe to this restaurant. And that's about it. The food is very average, basically everything tastes the same.
Mistermister
A great local tapas places for two or a group with a lovely atmosphere equalling ones in the CBD lane ways. We were in a group of 7. The portions are a little on the small size, so I would recommend ordering one or two more dishes. We let the waiter choose and were not disappointed. The slow cooked beef, fish with mustard and all the desserts are a good reason for me to come back. They had a good wine selection to match the meals. All up we paid about $65 each (incl. coffees). No skim milk available. They are happy to split bills/ eftpos transactions. Too easy and yummy not to come back.
Fred Nerk
Enjoyed a fantastic meal full of great flavour accompanied by lovel Tempranillo. Service very friendly and timely. Totally recommend. Get along.

Last night I dined at Tinto with some friends and the first thing that I would like to do is thank the chef.

The food was inspirational. He is a true artist. The dishes were vitally healthy, deliciously flavoured and beautifully presented. The atmosphere at Tinto was warm and elegant. The service was friendly and impeccable. I would say that Tinto's food is amongst the best food I have ever eaten. Tinto's is a jewel who's reputation will undoubtedly increase!!!

The answer to a bad day! Lovely tasty food with matching wines, open fire and friendly staff. The beef cheek is beautiful and some of the wines are fantastic. The only downside (does not bother me) is that it's very loud towards the end of the evening when everyone's having lots of fun.
Barcelona comes to Hawthorn. Melbourne’s food culture might have begun in city laneways but now, says Maria Triado, ‘the burbs can have pockets of excitement’. Tinto has brought Barcelona to Hawthorn at affordable prices.
At ‘Tinto’ you can sit at the bar and eat tapas ($9-18) accompanied by Spanish wines or carefully selected local Victorian wines, or if you want to linger, as we did, you can cozy up near the gas fire or at the overflow ‘kitchen table’ and eat mains for less than $30. Tinto’s rich timbers and comfortable seating create a homely, sociable vibe. It’s a place to linger, a place to return to again and again, a place to chat thanks to soft acoustics and Spanish music that’s turned down when restaurant volume goes up.
The food thrives on the ‘simple is good’ philosophy and at the same time it surprises – with texture, flavor and presentation. Thyme is paired with chocolate, tarragon with Arroz con leche. Order the Tarta de Santiago and you don’t just get a wedge, order the Ensalada cruda de otoño and discover how brussel sprouts crunch. Turn up in May and there will be slippery jacks and pine mushrooms from Mount Macedon on the menu. There is allegiance to traditional Spanish, but with a twist to tantalize.

Very impressive!. We absolutely loved our Tinto experience. There is something really special about this place. Was it the friendly greeting from Maria and Paula when we walked in, or was it the amazing food? The menu is varied and interesting and the flavours (eg the cauliflower salad) nothing short of amazing. Good wine list too.
Can't wait to return and well done Tinto.

Good food, good atmosphere , good service , very small portions and overpriced ( esp the lamb cutlet) 30$ for three tiny pieces of lamb!!!! Will come back soon

Dessert tops off a fabulous meal. Tinto blitzes the field with Arroz con Leche – creamy rice, blood plums, tarragon and honeycomb. It was such a good dessert I'd put it on my 'what to take to a desert island' list.

Delicious food, really poor service. Having just moved to Kew my partner and I thought we'd try one of the local restaurants that Urbanspoon recommended, so off to Tinto we went. The restaurant itself was lovely, with enough of a Spanish flair to transport you to Barcelona. The food was also great - the jamon croquettes were utterly delicious (we could have eaten plates and plates of them), as was the chorizo and the tomato and strawberry salad. We had the lamb as our bigger dish, and while nothing to write home about it was still tasty.
The thing that let this restaurant down was the service - once we arrived and ordered our wine, the bottle did not come until after we had ordered our food. After having ordered our food, we had waited about 35 mins before the waitress told us she had forgotten to put our order through. I can forgive a mistake like this on a busy Saturday might, but we sat and watched as other tables received their food and ours still did not arrive. Almost an hour after ordering our food it arrived all at once.....and at this point our bottle of wine was almost gone. The food once arrived, as stated, was delicious. We then ordered a couple of extra glasses of wine that did not arrive - it took one of the wait staff to ask how our food was after it's long wait, for us to say our wine was taking just as long! We then received our glasses without an apology or offer of them being on the house. So while our dinner was really tasty due to the sub-standard service, we will not be returning to Tinto.

Fantastic food and wine. Nice to have a local place that takes pride in their execution of food and customer service! Looking forward to returning.

Janeh. Having dined at Tinto on several occasions, I cannot fault the food or the service. I have loved it all from the jamon, calamari, mussels , beef cheek, pork belly....need I say more? One of my favourite restsurants!

Disappointing experience. I went to Tinto just before Christmas for dinner with two friends. We found the experience very disappointing. The service was poor - we were seated but were not given menus until we asked for them fifteen minutes later. We ordered a blue cheese and pear salad. However, we were served the salad with goats cheese rather than blue cheese, and no pear. When we queried this, the waitress tried to tell us that the cheese was blue. When we sent it back to the kitchen they returned it to our table and informed us that they had run out of those ingredients and had used goats cheese as a replacement - without informing us of the change. We also ordered desserts - one of which was described as a chocolate fondant (but had no gooey centre), the other came as a few mixed berries, and some green ice that immediately melted. The menu that we were given was different (and more expensive) than the one on the Tinto website. It seems that the restaurant may be more caught up in presentation than providing quality food to their customers.

Tapas, wine & atmosphere - in Hawthorn.. Finally a new restaurant in Hawthorn that caters for those of us that appreciate good food, wine and atmosphere and not the university style take away that is slowly invading Hawthorn. This restaurant is genuine in every aspect. We had a great night our only dilemma - which was our favourite dish? we had the croquette, calamari, beef cheeks and salad. My husband said the salad was the best he had tasted, but decided the beef cheeks were the favourite. The service was excellent - we walked in and while we couldn't get a table (booked out) we sat at the bar at the window. The restaurant was full of energy, and the service was friendly, attentive but not over bearing. Well done, we will be back.

Unreasonable price for such small quantity. Food is nothing out of the world ! So definitely overpriced.
Plus not a peaceful place for dinner, small and crowded . So not worth !

Sublime. I was hanging out to try this new Hispanic hot spot having watched it's progress towards opening. It was all I'd imagined and more! I adore all things spanish and I adore tasty morsels. Tinto has both. Sitting up at the bar, the service was instant and regularly attentive. We picked 3 tapas dishes (calamari, a crispy zucchini & anchovies slice, mussels) and a delicious chardie from the Bellarine peninsula (Mermerus winery). I was in heaven. I swirled and gnashed my way through this culinary feast and soaked up the wonderful atmosphere Hans & Maria have created. If you want great, tasty food, a warm inviting atmosphere and fantastic service (at very reasonable prices), Tinto is your place. They also have full menus and table service if you are looking for a dining experience beyond tapas. I loved it!

It's like eating at a friends house who can't do enough for you as their guest.
Staff hustle and bustle, good wines, ever changing specials from which we often order. Thumbs up

My wife and I were running late - we rang Maria and she said to get there safely. When we arrived it was like being welcomed into her family home. A pre- dinner drink at the bar got us in the mood for a great night! The food was spectacular, the wine list varied with a Spanish flavour and the ambiance like being on the Camino! A great night out without breaking the bank - we will back to another fun night!

Felt like I was in my Yaya's home again!. I have now been to Tinto twice and as a Spaniard I can honestly say the wine and food is clearly grounded in traditional Spanish culture and history. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed Spain in Australia and after talking to the owners and lovely bar tender over a red wine and tapas (happy to find a great selection of vegetarian food) I really felt like I was back in my home country. Super warm next to the fire too! Muchas gracias Tinto

Foods good, atmosphere is meh.. Couldn't fault the food it was delish. A little bit tricky trying to order our wine, one waitress said they ran out, another brought it to our table - wasn't the greatest wine, so kinda wished they had ran out. Atmosphere is a bit hectic, feels a little fake, there's no cosyness to it. Best to hit it with a bunch of friends, not really a romance kinda place.

Tinto is great for Hawthorn!. It's great to have such a great quality Spanish restaurant in Hawthorn. Food is well priced and the service is excellent. They have a wonderful fitout and feel!

Called to make a booking to celebrate a friends birthday. Very excited to try what looks like a delicious new restaurant. However, the individual I spoke to was quite hostile and did not give us confidence in the service we would receive. Instead of politely apologising for the lack of tables. We were told our request was "impossible" and there was "no way" we could have a table. I understand being busy but her manners give little to inspire one to return. Such a shame because the food really does sound great. Maybe we just need to cool off and give it another go.

Very Pleasant, great service and awesome owners who actually talk to you!!. Dined Sat 2 August. Sat at the bar initially waiting for a table as the place was so busy and ended up eating at the bar which was really great, heaps of space and its Tapas - its what you do when you share with a nice spanash red!!. We were 3 people and couldnt fault the food, the service and the ambience. Even met Paula, one of the Spanish sisters that own the place and she was very hospitable and we had a good chat (my son speaks Spanish so they talked the lingo a bit too!). A slight stuff up with the dessert, (not major to us) but its how you fix these sometimes inevitable issues that count and Paula fixed it tenfold. We will be back when next in town and hope to see the place just as busy. Try the Buttifaro sausage with black eyed beans. Thanks Ladies enjoyed it very much and appreciated your down to earth and friendly style. Gareth and Kerry from Perth, WA

Yum yum yum. Went here on a friday night with a few friends and had a fantastic evening! The croquettes are amazing and the goat's cheese and caramelised onion pastry was just yum. We shared 4 or 5 other plates between us and loved every single one. The chef is from Spain and it really shows in the authenticity of the food. Having said that, we did order the chocolate fondant (not really very spanish!), but I'm so glad we did because it was the best one I've ever had!!!!

At last a cosy bar that oozes atmosphere. Remember that fantastic bar in Barcelona you went to, they've moved to Hawthorn. Sensational tapas, great selection of wine, wonderful hosts and full of rustic charm.

The wine list is a nice blend of local and Spanish wines. My companion and I chose the Marques de Tezona tempranillo, and a few dishes to be going on with. Co-owner Maria recommended the coca, a racion of goat’s cheese and onion marmalade on flatbread, and we augmented that with some croquettes de jamon and the inevitable (for an Irishwoman) tortilla.

The coca came out looking like a long pizza, and it was just divine. I could have simply had that to myself and a nice glass of red, sitting up at the counter with a book in my hand if I didn’t have company
