Review Shanklin Cafe - Hawthorn

Such a nice and cozy cafe. Super friendly staff and relaxing vibe. Have been here multiple times and never disappointed. Baked Egg and the Turkish Latte were my favourite two items, with a little flavour twist from mediterranean could make so much difference!

This is one of my favourite brunch places!!! Definitely worth going to. I would highly recommend making a booking as it gets super busy on weekends especially and helps to ensure that you don’t have to wait too long for a table. The food is amazing!!

Nice place in a quiet suburb. I enjoyed the eggs with prawns. Quite busy though so might be a good idea to make a booking. Friendly service and the food was quick. Would be back to try other items on the menu :)

Food is just out of this world! Service was okay and the restaurant ambience was really nice. I would definitely recommend the Portobello mushroom - it’s so crunchy and juicy. PS: I did not come in on Mother’s Day…

Let's start with the coffee. Probably one of the best cold brews I've had in some time. That is saying a lot given average coffee standards in Melbourne! The brunch - unique middle Eastern inspired menu that really hits the nail on balancing the middle Eastern spices with standard lunch fare. Every single dish was delicious and moreish. Consider sharing a brunch dish if you are not starving because the servings were very large! Service was extremely hospitable with genuine care and concern for our comfort.e.g. swiftly accommodated baby and high chair, and checked in multiple times on how things are.

Probably my fav Israel breakfast in Mel. I really love their baked eggs shakshuka which contains eggs and grilled sausage. The flavor is perfect for me while it’s strong and delicious. We also ordered chili prawn scramble and potato roasti, and four drinks. The Iced chocolate was not that sweet, which I like the most.

Delicious food and very friendly service. Well worth the visist to this easily missed cafe. Hidden in plain sight, keep your eye out for it.

Coffee was great! Scramble egg and steak sandwiches were delicious. Service was friendly and prompt. Food came out really quickly too, despite being quite busy.

Took me awhile to travel down to Hawthorn but it was definitely worth it :) We grabbed Baked Eggs Shakshuka ($22) and Portobello Mushroom ($23). They were all beautifuly plated and service was friendly and attentive.<br/><br/>Baked Eggs Shakshuka came with red peppers, cherry tomato, chorizo & goat cheese with sourdough. Mildly spicy - enough to give off that heat you seek.<br/>Portobello Mushroom was panko crumbed with zaatar spice with halloumi topped with 2 poached eggs. I actually liked this one more. Mushroom + Egg + Halloumi in one bite = heaven. It was just beautiful - slightly crispy, savoury, sweet all at the same time.

Shanklin has to be one of the best cafes I’ve ever visited. Each dish on the menu is creatively plated and tastes as good as they look. The stunning presentation will blow you away, but each bite will make you want to stay for more. Not only will you walk out of Shanklin extremely full, but you will be counting down the days till your next visit. One of the best things about Shanklin during this time (Covid 19) is the outdoor seating. There are plenty of tables undercover outdoors, but be sure to wear a warm coat and book in advance. The staff here practice safe table service and ensure all tables are hygienically cleaned before seating new customers. The staff were also another standout feature of this cafe. They are extremely friendly, professional and will let you alter the menu however you please. We can not recommend this cafe more! So many great things to choose, you can’t go wrong! Our favourite was the chicken burger!

Decided to visit one of the highest rating Shanklin cafe few days ago, ordered myself a salmon potato rösti and a beetroot latte. The beetroot latte is visually appealing, reddish-pink colour with some dried petals on top and honey on the side. I find the beetroot taste quite bland, the milky taste comes forward to me more which disappoints me a bit, but it’s a GOOD drink. For the potato rosti, it’s taste really good, a nice combination of smoked salmon and egg benedict. Although it burnt a bit, not sure if it’s intentional to create some crispy texture or it’s just a slight mistake. Overall, I quite like the food and atmosphere. The staffs are VERY friendly. I would suggest go for something light like teas or juices with the potato rosti 💜

Food and drinks were amazing. Have been returning to this cafe for a few times now. They have an incredible menu which makes it hard for me to decide cause everything is amazingly delicious. Their matcha comes with a side small beaker of honey and it’s super cute. It’s also a good way for me to control the sweetness of my drink. <br/><br/>Amazing and friendly stuffs too. They know how to recommend their best choice to the customers.<br/><br/>WILL BE BACK FOR MORE! CHEERS! <br/>

The worst Mocha I ever had in Melbourne! The taste of coffee bean was so weak! And the milk flavour was too strong. The food was very salty and greasy😖

I had a very high expectation towards the baked egg but (probably) due to corona (the menu was changed?) it did not meet up my expectations as i suspected many components were missing (like mushroom) but overall it was a great brunch experience!

We had an amazing experience at Shanklins Cafe and I highly recommend it to everyone.<br/> <br/>Probably book in advance though. We didn't and had to wait a short while but the manager Daniel maneuvered people around to fit us in. He and his staff were incredible. Working together like they'd been doing it for years. We were checked on often, even with the restaurant filled. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. My friend who lives in the area recommended it and she talked to Daniel like they were best friends.<br/><br/>Most important is the food and it did not disappoint. I can see why it is rated so highly. I ate the Portobello Mushroom and it was just what I needed as my first out of house meal since Corvid-19 started. My friend got the Super Green and unfortunately a tiny part of the toast was burnt. It was all fixed up and after we shared the Nutella Pancakes. Glad we shared because the portion sizes were HUGE and I struggled cramming each delicious bite in my mouth.<br/><br/>I was unable to get a picture of them but what soured my experience slightly was two women next to us bickering to each other about being seated next to two large dark skinned males. We were close to saying something.<br/><br/>Over all a 4.9/5 experience. Will definitely come back.

Had an amazing brunch at Shanklin yesterday. We ordered Chili Prawn Scramble and Pork Benny. Both tasted really good, well seasoned and fresh. We also ordered Nutella Pancake. It was a different texture than what I was expecting, not super soft/fluffly, but could be because it’s vegan (?) The topping was amazing though. Iced matcha latte tasted a bit bland, but after notifying the staff they gave us another one and then another one, so a total of 3 glasses. They also gave us another pancake on the house because of it. We felt really bad about it though but nonetheless service was 5/5. I’d give it a 6/5 even if possible. Ambience was 5/5 as well. Please keep up the good work👍🏻

Shanklin was a beautiful cafe with great indoor and outdoor seating available. The staff were so lovely and welcoming.<br/><br/>Shanklin have some amazing dishes available for people who have a sweet tooth and also for people looking to eat healthy.<br/><br/>On the sweet side - shanklin offer an amazing Nutella freakshake with incredible presentation and tastes incredible, true to the Nutella flavour. They also offer Nutella and ice cream pancakes topped with crushed Oreo with fruit surrounding the pancake stack. It tasted as amazing as it looked.<br/><br/>On the healthy side - we ordered a colourful bowl which came with salmon and some beans, corn, avo and tasty greens. This dish was equally as delicious!<br/><br/>I’d definitely go back again!

Always loved the pancakes here and they taste just as good takeaway! No compromise on size, flavour or price which I am so grateful for. Their vegetarian turkish roll is also damn delicious

We're totally blown away by their signature dishes - Nutella Oreo pancake and Portobello Mushrooms. The Prawn Chilli Scramble egg is another highlight worthy of checking out. The cafe has solid brunch vibes and friendly and attentive service.

I used to say Pork Benny is my favorite, since I found this one. The service was nice and friendly, I highly recommend this restaurant to my friends.

Due to its high rating, I had very high expectations of coming to this place. I ordered the chilli scrambled eggs with prawns and unfortunately it tasted quite mediocre like other brunch cafe. I probably ordered the wrong dish but it definitely didn't taste as good as I thought it'll be. Maybe I should have asked for recommendations.

Definitely lives up to its reputation, brunch here was fantastic. The chicken burger was great and loved the thick cut chips.<br/><br/>Was so awesome that the staff let us order a smaller size version of their signature Nutella pancakes. So fluffy and there was heaps of Nutella. <br/><br/>Oreo Shake was great and my girlfriend ordered the corn fritters special and loved it too. We would definitely come back for brunch again!!

Wow the Beirut breakfast what a way to start the day! Pair it with a strong coffee and a delicious juice and I was feeling ready to go. Loved the venue, awesome staff and all the food looks amazing!

So I went to this cafe for Sunday breakfast with my partner on the recommendation of a close friend and could not recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere was great, place is super clean and the fit-out trendy! The food was great as well, I had the Beirut breakfast and my partner baked eggs shakshuka. We both loved our meals and the coffees we ordered with them! Youssef one of the owners seated us and organised our food and drinks! Great guy and great place!

My friend and I visited Shanklin Café on a random whim. <br/><br/>A café rated 4.9 on Zomato that is so rare. My rating of 4 stars reasonable given the quality of customer service, ambience and food. It fell short of being 4.5 or even 5, as it’s a very cramped seating environment with not much space in between and the price of the food items were a little high.<br/><br/>🔆LOCATION🔆<br/><br/>This café is a hidden gem. Not readily obvious if you drive past as its painted the same colour as the McCoppin Gourmet Food & Wine Supermarket right next door. But if you look out for McCoppin then you’ll know where Shanklin Café is.<br/><br/>The café is actually an old residential Victorian home that has been totally revamped from the interior. <br/><br/>As you walk in there is a small covered courtyard section before you go inside to the café. The left side of the wall (where the counter is located) have been stripped back to its natural brick which gives it a nice warehouse type vibe. The back wall is tiled in a dark sparkly colour and the opposite wall and the ceiling has a gorgeous wooden paneling effect; brightly lit lights in a neat row. There composition of materials gives the café a unique feel.<br/><br/>🔆SERVICE🔆<br/><br/>Customer service here is impeccable. The lady that served us was always dropping by to see if we’re okay and if the food is okay and if we need any more drinks. They wear runners and active wear clothing. The pork belly was tasty and had good crunch when biting into the crispy skin. The poached eggs were done very well.<br/><br/>Overall, it was enjoyable visit to Shanklin Café.

The service is top class. I took my 84-year-old friend (who is not very mobile) there today to celebrate her birthday. The staff were very helpful and provided a complimentary cake as a birthday treat. At the end, without being being asked Daniel, one of the waiters, waited with my friend while I got the car then assisted my friend to the car in pouring rain.<br/>The food was very nice and the surroundings are roomy and pleasant. Altogether it was a great experience!

Such a nice brunch at Shanklin this week! Wonderful hospitality and service. We really felt welcomed and enjoyed our experience. Burger and French Toast were delicious, definitely my recommendation. Hopefully the special Fritters make it into the menu too!

We went to Shanklin on a busy Sunday for brunch, not only was the food delicious but the service was awesome. Our food and drinks arrived very quickly and the staff were attentive & friendly. I will definitely be visiting again. Reservations are recommended.

Loved this place for a local breakfast spot. The eggs shakshuka would have to be my favourite, a little spicy but delicious. The burger was also delicious. And the crumbled mushrooms is a great veg option.

Despite only having been here once, I imagine the rating is mainly due to the consistency of their customer service. It was mainly on point from the moment we arrived and clearly something that is important to them.<br/><br/>It does pain me not to give at least 4 stars because I generally rate (good/excellent) service quite high (yes, shock, horror when you get excellent service in an industry called hospitality). If the food is outstanding, then I’m not going to blink an eye looking at a bill well north of $50 for two meals and sparkling water. I’ve certainly paid more.<br/><br/>Unfortunately for me, it was just... good. Not exceptional. Given that competition is fierce when it comes to cafes, I’ve just eaten better for less. However, that could simply have been a poor menu choice on my behalf.<br/><br/>Good ambience otherwise, nice fitout and a 4+ rating in service.

I love the fact it is tucked away just ever so slightly. Even so, the place is always buzzing. Goes to show the people who know about this place will keep coming back! We had the baked eggs and the asparagus and polenta stack. But honestly every table around us had amazing dishes too. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Was there on 31 Dec brunch time, place was packed but the staff was very friendly to welcome us. The highlight was the recommended Portobello Mushroom - very nicely deep fried with light crumb. Nutella pancake was plated very nicely - yet a little too sweet for our liking. Oh the coffee was also great. <br/>Knowing it was our first place coming there, the lady cashier gave us 2 complimentary cakes. Thank you for the great service.

I came with several of my close friends thinking this place must have really good food to get a 4.9 rating on Zomato. Maybe my expectation was too high, but the food was ok. There was nothing special that really makes it different compared to any other brunch places I’ve been. <br/>Also, it would be really nice if the waiters and waitresses could remind us that they charge for sparkling water instead of simply asking if we want still or sparkling water, without indicating that it has an additional price :)<br/>Some of my friends who rarely go to brunch cafes were even tricked by their nonchalant questions when ordering such as “Would you like mushrooms or avocado with it?”. Adding the word “extra” to the question would be very much appreciated. This is the same case to the sparkling water. <br/>However, the waiters and waitress were very nice and professional if not for the word omission ;)

Visited Shanklin purely intrigued to see why they were rated so high. There is simply nothing to fault at this cute cafe. The service was on point, friendly and genuine - staff that ask how your day is going and actually care about your response. The food was delicious, and served promptly. Coffee just reiterated why Melbourne is the coffee capital - perfect. Thanks guys!

I have had this place bookmarked for a long time given its high rating on Zomato. Finally decided to visit the cafe and it certainly lived up to my expectations! We ordered the potato rosti with smoked salmon which tasted amazing. The matcha latte comes with a separate cup of honey so you can adjust the sweetness level of your drink which is great. The honey also gives the matcha latte a very unique taste. Will definitely visit again!

Pancake is awesome!! And my boyfriend said the beef burger was great!! Pancake was too much and my boyfriend helped to finish it xxxx. Wondering if the flowers on the pancake can be ate.<br/>Like the atmosphere here. I’m glad I got to try this place. I had it bookmarked for a while. I. Ordered the matcha latte and the orange semolina cake. <br/><br/>The cake was so light and airy and the vanilla ice cream compliments it. The matcha is great, rich in flavour and service is genuine and very professional. Highly recommended

Order the signature dish: portobello mushroom, is all right, just wait a little bit longer than expected, it’s a rainy weekday, and not busy at all. But coffee is nice and service is very good!

In love with this Melbourne style cafe. The best matcha latte and shakshuka, if you come in the afternoon most likely you’ll get a table without a booking. The cafe is small but always packed.

Came here with a couple of friends after seeing such a high review on Zomato. Was seated quickly and offered to order drinks.<br/><br/>Ordered a standard flat white, came quickly and had a nice blend of strong coffee flavour and smooth milk. <br/>Then it came time to order food, this was the most difficult part, as all the items on the menu looked very good. But I stuck to my usual and went with the pork benny (as they didn't have a chilli scrambled). <br/><br/>Food came out quick enough and it was delicious and presented nicely. My other friends had the Nutella stuffed pancakes and baked eggs and were both very satisfied. <br/><br/>Overall I'll give this place a 4.6/5 rating for decor, drinks, food and staff friendliness/attentiveness.

food was just as average, and when my friend sat down the guy asked her tap water or sparkling water, she said sparkling water but never told that need to pay extra $3 for per person, it is fine to pay that, but we do prefer tell us first

The service here was amazing - we had an extraordinary waiter! The food is so yummy - that potato rosti was soooooo good! We will definitely make a return visit.

I stumbled upon this restaurant on Zomato while trying to select a venue for my birthday. I was looking for something that won't disappoint - tbh, I'd just have stuck to my regular set of restaurants I frequented to just coz I know what to expect - and I don't know why, I decided to make a reservation at Shanklin, while the rest is reflected in my stars, I must write in detail, this nothing I say justifies my gratefulness to the staff and this venue for making my celebrations one of the few memorable ones.<br/><br/>First up! Thank you Amy for taking care of my guests while I was late at arriving at my own birthday brunch, and then taking care of all of us throughout the service. :)<br/>Other servers were equally great and friendly too.<br/><br/>Food: fresh, well cooked, tasty and one can say, made with love!<br/><br/>Ambiance: happy welcoming and yes, PACKED.<br/>Make the reservation, you won't be disappointed!

The breakfast was amazing, everything on the menu was very appealing. I got the baked eggs and could say this is one of my favourite places!

We had a great time at Shanklin and the staff is always super friendly. Ive been here a couple of times and had a good experience every time. <br/>My favourites were the baked eggs (one of the best ive had) and acai bowl is always yum!<br/>The first time i visited my friend and I had their signature hotcakes, which was good but we both felt it wasn’t the best. Ours were overly sweet and felt really heavy on the stomache. But I’ve heard from others they enjoyed it so could just be our luck that day. I highly recommend this cafe as the service tops it all and we always have a good time.

Overall this was a very enjoyable breakfast. Some things to improve on was the way their eggs were cooked, mine were over cooked unfortunately so when I cut into them, there was no ooze of the yolk. The potato Rossi was also slightly over cooked so it was hard to but because it was so crisp. <br/><br/>The corn fritters were 10/10 though and cooked to perfection. The value of food though including the amount salmon on both dishes was amazing, so much to eat that I couldn’t even finish! <br/><br/>The beetroot latte was BEAUTIFUL, in terms of taste - without the honey it was interesting but not bad! With the honey added into it, the flavour was quite lovely. <br/><br/>I’m excited to come back and try their other menu items.

The Soy Chai was a disappointment as it was too watered down. The Nutella Stuffed Pancakes were bad as they were cold, dry and too crumbly, and the ice cream on top was already melted and made the dish an unflattering mess even when it was just served. Told the staff about how we did not enjoy the pancakes and they’d kindly made up for it by giving us a complimentary slice of chocolate hazelnut cake. The potato rosti on the other hand was absolutely yummy! Would come back for the potato rosti and maybe try out their highly-raved Shakshuka.

And i gotta say that the service was as good aa they first. <br/>Disclaimer: Shanklin looks like a local favourite, try to book a table in before hand in order to avoid standing in a really long queue. <br/><br/>If you are a sweet tooth, the NUTELLA PANCAKES are a must have and i would definitely recommend The POTATO ROASTI for the savoury ones. Also the ACAI BOWL really impressed me with the massive topping they had with such a generous dollop of peanut butter. <br/><br/>The staffs were super friendly and recommended some dishes, so if the menu confuses you..so ask them for help.

My local and go-to cafe every week! Best staff, generous portions, lovely food and coffee. A place to call home! If you want to sink your teeth into a juicy meal, a personal favourite of mine is the chicken burger! #mouthisstillwatering

If you want to get ripped off, go to Shanklin Cafe on a public holiday.<br/>Came here on grand final weekend. They printed off special "Grand Final Weekend" menus. There was no special item on the menu, only an inflated price. My shakshuka is 22$ normally, and 25$ on a public holiday. On top of this, they charged a 15% public holiday surcharge coming to almost $29. I absolutely understand the public holiday surcharge, however I find the special Grand Final Menu misleading and greedy - should have just put a 30% public holiday surcharge.<br/><br/>What a ridiculous business practice.

Been wanting to go here for a while since I saw that they had Nutella stuffed pancakes! <br/>My friend and I went, I obviously got the Nutella stuffed pancakes & my friend got the baked eggs & banana bread.<br/><br/>My friend really liked the banana bread. She said it was the best she had ever had. However she didn’t liked the baked eggs. When the eggs came out they were runny instead of being baked.<br/><br/>The Nutella stuffed pancakes were good. They looked absolutely gorgeous but I didn’t get what all the hype was about for it. <br/><br/>Another thing I liked about ordering the pancakes is that every dish sold they donate $1 to sustainable food projects which is awesome! <br/><br/>The place was lovely. But very overcrowded, we felt like we were on top of one another.<br/>I would like to come back & check it out another time to see if we came on an off day.

Unbelievable! Found this place via Zomato and WOW! Where do I start! Customer service was the best I have experienced! The atmosphere, menu, coffee and the FOOD 10/10! The food is so fresh, full of flavor, filling and delicious! Make sure you visit this place and I guarantee (like me) you will keep returning!

Got a table really quick on a Monday at 11. The staff were really friendly. The area outside is nice and shaded over a roof (not just an umbrella) and it was pet friendly. Had two dishes to share between two: Nutella pancakes and the fried Portobello mushrooms with poached eggs. I personally favoured the savoury dish as the Nutella pancakes was too sweet and overpowering for brunch. If you enjoy chocolate/have a sweet tooth then it'd be perfect! Overall, a really nice brunch place however I would not rate is 4.9/5. Perhaps a 3.9 or 4 seems more appropriate. It is a little too hyped up

After hearing so much about this place, I decided it was time to experience it for myself. We made sure we came really early so we didn't have to wait too long in line. I got the roasted lamb salad and it was hella good! Definitely worth it's high ratings.

Love this price! Small but very busy, very very friendly and helpful staff! Everything is prefect. The pancake I ordered can’t be better, also the sparkling water here — lucky I did order one, love it.

Amazing cafe in Hawthorn, and one of my weekend favourites. I mean, if there's a big queue it's definitely worth waiting for. If you're a first-timer then you gotta try their famous Nutella Pancakes! I always try to order something new from the menu when I visit and each dish is just as good as the list.
