📝: Revisited this amazing cafe in Hawthorn after so long. Food and service is still as great as I remember.

❤️: We ordered the Short Straw, Mean Mushrooms, and Poke Bowl. My favorite was the Short Straw—sweetcorn kale and zucchini fritters with pumpkin hummus. The Poké Bowl was also amazing, so fresh and tasty.

My dining companion opted for the poke bowl, loaded to the brim with freshness and plump slices of salmon. The amount of salmon, along with the overall portion size of the dish, is quite generous. Not quite in the mood for anything in particular, I decided to choose the brekkie board (which normally comes with a mini croissant but they had run out on the day of our visit) with an added side of crispy fried halloumi. A great option for anyone after a little bit of this and that, the indecisive or the super hungry, the brekkie board is the way to go, covering all bases with savoury and sweet.

Cosy Cafe and Perfectly Placed!

We enjoyed such a wonderful brunch here at Short Straw.

The interior was perfect for a cosy brunch and to do a bit of work.

We can definitely recommend ordering a side of fries as they were fantastic to enjoy on the side.

Our favourite dish was definitely The Spring Smash. The bread was filled with delicious flavours and seeds. The avo had a fresh taste to it and was really delicious!

The berry smoothie was also a favourite 😍

Thanks Team Short Straw! We will definitely be back 👋🏼

Short Straw is a typical Melbourne cafe with great coffee and an uncomplicated menu. When you are greeted warmly on arrival and don’t need to squeeze into a tiny table, it’s also an appealing cafe to catch up with a friend! We ordered two coffees, The Short Straw ($20) and the Pork Benny ($20). Coffee arrived with rich coffee smells and some coffee art…winning!

Short Straw is never disappointing!

I loved the new menu! The fritters were divine. The smashed avocado is always on point, with plenty of avo and flavours. Their drinks menu has something for everyone! The PB or green smoothies are my go-to, and are always a winner!

The decor here is also fab! The staff are always welcoming and the place has an overall, really friendly vibe. Highly recommend!

A great Hawthorn cafe that you find yourself always going back to.

I was drawn to this particular cafe by the Eats Club 40% off deal. From the moment I entered this small cafe, I could tell that it was a lively place. All around the cafe, natural light streamed onto an abundance of hanging plants.

Short Straw was quite unlike many other places as it placed a delicious spin on the regular suspects of a cafe menu.

We had the New York Style Chicken Bagel and the Poké Bowl with an add-on of fries. The chicken bagel had a delicious kick with a hint of spice and the poké bowl was decorated with loads of beans, salmon, avocado, seaweed salad and corn. The service was friendly and efficient.

I would definitely consider returning here again. Coming here certainly does not mean you have drawn the short straw!

When I think of our typical Melbourne Café, I think of this: exposed red brick, coffees perfected to the ninth degree, avo on toast and youngesters with beards or tattoos at La Marzocco. In the last decade, Hawthorn has become a suburb beyond reckoning for its café culture. From the early days of Hirte and Toleman’s Liar Liar to the Makin and Delany’s Axil Coffee Roasters, to more recent and super Instagrammable spots like Fika; there are now so many superb ones in this locale, that the most difficult question has become where to choose.

I have always been meaning to check out Short Straw so when a friend invited me to join her, I jumped at the chance. I was warmly greeted when I walked in, and the service did not waver from start to finish.

My friend and I shared the Brekkie Board, Sumo Fried Chicken Burger and the Poke Bowl. I really enjoyed the mix of sweet and savoury on the Brekkie Board, and the simple smashed avo was incredibly creamy and well-seasoned. The brioche French toast with vanilla custard was decadent, yet not too sweet. The burger was also fantastic, as the fried chicken was juicy and crisped, while the burger as a whole exuded a punchy flavour.

The poke bowl was made up of fresh ingredients, but I personally thought that it could do with a bit more kick. Nonetheless, it was a nutritious and filling bowl.

We also shared the Oreo Obsession milkshake and Green Goodness smoothie. The former was an indulgent treat, while the latter was refreshing and healthy.

Both of us really enjoyed our meal here, and the service here is second to none.

Loved absolutely everything about this cafe! As soon as I walked in I was blown away by all of the beautiful greenery.

The service was absolutely fabulous with the waitress helping us decide what to eat and checking-in to make sure everything was okay. Everyone in there seemed to be working hard whilst also having a ball!

The food was fantastic! Loving their new menu especially the Mean Mushrooms. The poke has been on the menu awhile but why would you take something off when it’s this good!

Smoothies were perfect; I went for the green smoothie as these are always my favourite.

Had been really looking forward to visiting here and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Look forward to eating there again!

• Sumo fried chicken burger $18.5
• Although this dish may look very similar like other brunch dishes, it was unexpectedly good. • The taste of the chicken was overpowering at first but later I then thought it went super well with other ingredients. • The brioche bun shone on its own. It was soft and buttery. • House-made wakame slaw was absolutely delicious: the cabbage was not bitter, and the seaweed was perfectly dressed. • Fries were thin and crispy and paired extremely well with the kewpie sauce.

This weekend, I was able to finally experience the new spring/summer menu at Short Straw in Hawthorn. A much loved, highly raved about brunch spot.

I was so excited to see that there was ow a poke bowl on the menu. Filled with Brown and black multigrain rice with cured sesame seed salmon, sweet corn, radish, pickled onion, edamame, avocado, wakame and ponzu dressing. It did not disappoint. I decided to get it with eggs instead of the salmon. The yolk was the perfect addition to the already flavoursome bowl.

My friend went for the ‘Sumo Fried Chicken Burger’ on a brioche bun with house made wakame slaw, and a sriracha mayo with fries. She expressed the chicken was undeniably crispy and the slaw added the perfect amount of creamy flavours

Together we dived into the beautifully presented ‘Fresh Spring oats’ which came as soaked bircher muesil, fresh coconut yoghurt, seasonal fresh fruit and house made granola with grated Granny Smith apple. Fresh fruit with the deeply flavourful muesli made me want to make it at home everyday.

Overall, a wonderful place and experience. The staff were kind and always smiling. Second time there and definitely not my last.

Went to try out their new menu and it was enjoyable.
The brekkie board was delicious - only downside is my croissant had been murdered and was too burnt to eat.

Everything else was perfect. Brioche French toast sliders were amazing, organic oj was just what I needed.

The poached eggs with bacon was a treat and the potato rosti was cooked oerfectly.

The banana smoothie was delicious as well - will be back

I have visited Short Straw multiple times and it never lets me down!

Last time I had the Overnight Delight, and I really mean it when I say I wish I could have it every morning! The plating was incredible, such a beautiful dish. It tasted so fresh and had the best fruity flavours.

Would love to come back have this dish on a summer day!

We also had the Avocado Smash which was delicious. The pesto and avocado combo was a refreshing change to the classic dish.

The staff are so friendly and always make you feel like they are your mates.

The place itself is gorgeous and so uniquely decorated. They always come out with the best tunes too!

This was such a cute cafe with very pretty interior. They also have some outdoor seatings.

We ordered the Peanut Butter Lovin and Banana Bonanza smoothies. Both very vibrant in colour and tastes deliciousss! It was a very wholesome smoothie.

For food, we ordered the Garden of Eden, the Poke Bowl and the Too Fly for Acai. My absolute favourite would have the be either the Garden of Eden or the Poke Bowl.

The Garden of Eden looked really beautiful, all kinds of green vegetables and lots of avocado! It also had 2 perfectly poched eggs.

The Poke Bowl was very fresh and refreshing. I absolutely love all the sesame seeds on it. It adds another layer of texture amongst the soft (tuna and avocado) and crunchy textures (salads).

Overall, I had a good experience here!

Short straw is a beautiful little cafe located in the heart of Hawthorn. The atmosphere in this cafe is honestly beautiful- there is loadss of natural light, beautiful white walls, lots of greenery and art and above all, the most kind and attentive staff, making sure you have everything you may need. I felt so welcome here and just so comfortable and at peace because of the overall vibe and aesthetic of the amazing interior.

We ordered the 'itti bitti chilli' scramble with bacon which was honestly to die for. I was genuinely very impressed. The dish was ACTUALLY spicy unlike a lot of chilli scrambles I've had in the past which have been far from it in my opinion. The dish was inspired by thai flavours which I wholeheartedly enjoyed- there was peanut, spring onion and fried shallots which added an extra element to the dish making it unique and ever so tasty. I especially appreciated that the scramble was actually infused with chilli oil which made sure that the dish was packed full of flavour. The side salad was also a lovely compliment to cut through the heat of the dish. My friend ordered the poke bowl which poached egg which was just beautiful also. We had lots of fun shooting this food here. For drinks we both got the cold pressed juices which were super light and refreshing which was exactly what we needed on the hot spring day. Not to mention, they were so pretty!

Overall this whole experience was so amazing and I would 100% come again. The staff, vibe and food all together make it an unforgettable cafe and a spot that I really think everyone should go to whether you're briefly visiting melbourne; or if you have been living here all your life- it's an absolute must on my list!

😱Lizzie’s first impression:  a cafe that's bustling with people and staff - what a way to start my weekend! Although it was later towards the arvo, there were still plenty of people there.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: The main winner of this cafe are their house made Winter Waffles topped with sea salt caramel, crumbed honey comb and some choc nibs with vanilla icecream. I'm a sucker for sweet waffles - the flavours came together perfectly.

Next up are their wild mushrooms dish. Although not as aesthetically pleasing, this dish smelt delicious and was slow cooked with chilli and garlic and topped with truffle cream and crispy polenta. The truffle cream smelt impeccable but wasn't too overbearing that it took away from the wild mushrooms.

You really can't go wrong with the angus burger - a fresh and juicy beef patty and fries on the side. What more can you ask for?

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The only thing I didn't enjoy were the polenta chips in the mushroom dish - though it's because I'm not the biggest fan of polenta. It wasn't as cripsy as I had hoped either.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: All in all, a great place for brunch and I can really see why there's a hype. Convenient to get to and great weekend vibes.

Why Short Straw?
We wanted somewhere new for a weekend breakky. I'm trying to use Zomato Gold benefits so we filtered by area and chose Short Straw.

Table and service
We had a 10 minute wait at 11am on a Saturday, but you could put your name down and pop to Chemist Warehouse next door if you wanted - they'll text you when your table is ready. We were seated by the window with beautiful sun streaming in. The cafe's quite pretty and warm. Service was very friendly and attentive.

Menu, food, and drinks
Great varied menu of good Melbourne breakfast fare. Noted a few vegan and healthy options. Good serving sizes, and not overpriced. We had the Chili Scramble (add bacon) and the Corn and Zucchini fritters (add egg). Everything coming out of the kitchen looked beautiful. Good coffees.

One more thing...
Take your time finding a car spot on a Saturday morning! Try up the street for 2 hour spots.

Came here because of Zomato Gold, as we wanted to try it but was a bit of a drive, but nonetheless we were glad we made it here.

Was a beautiful sunny day & we were seated next to the window, the decorations of the cafe was nice & gave it a good buzz.

Still in the chilli scrambled phase, I didn't need to look further after seeing it on the menu. My partner ordered the wild mushrooms.

Been a while since I've seen a chilli scrambled actually look like it was going to pack a punch, which it did (we suspected the added LGM [I'm sure most people would know what that is] to be the kicker), so I was very satisfied & craving for more🤤. The wild mushrooms are a must if you love a good bowl of fungi!

Overall a 4.7/5👍, food was delicious, drinks were on point & the whole atmosphere was what we look for in a cafe.

The place is actually really nice and aesthetic. Staff was really friendly and food din't take long.

Started with banana smoothie and it was quite yums, not too sweet nor thick. I do think the banana was not as ripe but it was still good.

The poke bowl was not good as the salmon was fishy. However they offered to change it to another dish so we got the acai bowl.

Overnight delight was great though, there's all these different texture from the nuts and fruits. It was just refreshing and the matcha yoghurt was lovely. It would be even better with honey.

The egg benny was quite yummy too. I loved the portion and the smoky flavour from the pork, it could be bit less chewy but it was quite soft. The holllandaise and pesto was yummsie, though the egg wasn't runny.

Lastly, wild mushrooms was easily our favorite. I really liked the different textures from the variety of shrooms, marinated beautifully and the sauce on the side complimented it perfectly. The polenta was crunchy and great.

Overall, a pretty good place with room for improvements.
Thank you for having me!

I was invited back to Short Straw to try their new winter menu, and boy was I impressed! They have a few new lovely additions to the menu, as well as revamping their iconic waffles dish.

We started off with an almond latte and matcha latte. The coffee here was really nice and smooth, and the matcha latte was huge!

It was so hard for us to decide what dishes to order, but we ended up choosing the Overnight Delight, Winter Waffles, and Vege Patch.

The Overnight Delight was so delicious! It was creamy and light, and not too sweet. The matcha yoghurt added a nice colour and flavour. Of course, you must add some of their house made granola for some nice crunch and texture (and who doesn’t love granola?!).

The Vege Patch was both healthy and tasty! There was so much variety in the one dish, every bite was a new surprise. I loved the sultanas which added a burst of sweetness, the crispy chickpeas added crunch, and the caramelised onion added lots of flavour. Definitely a dish worth trying!

Finally, the Winter Waffles were incredible! The waffle is perfect - it’s crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy within. The sea salt caramel and honeycomb paired with the vanilla ice cream work really well together, and surprisingly isn’t too sweet either. Highly recommend trying their waffles!

Overall, we had an amazing time at Short Straw. The staff are incredibly friendly and polite. I would highly recommend checking g them out if you’re in the area!

Short Straw recently changed their menu so I was keen to try their new winter waffles.

What I ordered:

Garden of eden

The actual waffles were crispy on the outside and a bit fluffy on the inside which was so nice. If you’re a fan of caramel you’ll LOVE this dish. The little chocolate bits and vanilla ice cream made it feel like more of an afternoon treat.

Coffee was nice too, I’m glad it wasn’t too milky in their larger cup!

Tucked away on a pretty street in Hawthorn, this place ticks all the boxes - friendly staff, cool vibes, on-trend menu, and amazing coffee.

We got to try three delicious dishes today:

GARDEN OF EDEN - a bright and vibrant plate with all the good things. Avocado chickpea hummus, poached eggs, pickled cauliflower, grilled asparagus and beetroot powder. Light, fresh and tasty.

WILD MUSHROOMS - this was my fav.. slow roasted mushies with chilli and garlic, crisp cheesey polenta chips, and a beautifully rich truffle cream served alongside. A really lovely dish, especially for these colder days.

VEGE PATCH - roasted corn, kale, pumpkin, seeds, and roasted chickpeas. Wow, the textures - Abit of everything on this plate, spot on!

To drink, we got the PEANUT BUTTER LOVIN smoothie - this was AMAZING!!! And to keep it fresh and healthy they also offer cold press juices - go for the GARDEN GREEN!

Can’t wait to go again. So many other dishes want to try.

Short Straw simply never fails to disappoint. Every time I visit, I'm delighted by their ability to accomodate to any sort of request (whether dietary or otherwise). I'm also continually impressed by their incredible service and friendly staff members!

My partner and I headed in on a Sunday at about 2.30pm. He ordered the chicken burger with a juice. We wanted to share the fries with his burger, and they happily agreed to change this "side of fries" to a bowl -- it was no stress at all. I ordered a smoothie with the oats and also grabbed some toast with jam on the side. I usually get a bit anxious when staff attempt to memorise your order, but I needn't have been with the Short Straw staff. They nailed everything, and it came out in about 5-10 minutes too!

The PB smoothie was incredible, definitely worth a try. Loved the oats too. It was an interesting twist being cold and topped with ice cream! I really enjoyed it and above all, was so glad to see that it was vegan. This sort of option is usually a no-go (as most sweet options tend to be at brunch spots) .. so it was very exciting to be able to try this!

On another note, the fries here are next level! Long story short, everything about my meal was delicious and my partner was super happy too. Absolutely love this spot and would recommend it to anyone around Hawthorn and afar too!

In my opinion, when it comes to the ultimate brunch, the epitome of ‘treating yourself’, we shouldn’t not cut ourselves short.

Why? Because from the moment you start sipping that straw, there will be so many sweet but short moments that you will definitely wish that that straw would be longer. Or that you would have more straws 🥤

I know most foodies like to strawt with some coffees and then move on to the delicious straweads so that they can finish the meal strawng. Me? Well, I am team bring everything at the same time to create something strawesome!

Here’s the strawnning spread we had:

- Short & Sweet - this place is immensely recognised for their famous and classic acai bowl and I have to say that was certainly an enjoyable, indeed. The acai wasn’t very sweet but the portion was good. It was slightly more liquid than the usual acai bowl (but not watery) even before we started to take some pictures (so it already came like that) but the toppings were somewhat different but certainly still good options! It has a mango purée, slightly hidden on first glance, below the banana and kiwi slices and it has fresh goji berries as opposed to the usual dehydrated ones. I actually thought I wouldn’t enjoy the berries like this as I always find the dehydrated ones too similar to raisins, but it was a surprisingly pleasant change. The granola itself has some puffed quinoa which again doesn’t add much sweetness to the mix but still provides that crunchiness that everyone loves. Also it has cajus 👏 I do think the meal could be slightly improved by adding some extra thickness to the bowl because it was definitely too runny but overall it was good to try this acai variation.

- Stacks on Waffles - my friend had this meal and from what she told me and from what I could perceive I think the dish is extraordinarily well presented and achieved!
First of all presentation is on point and leaves you mouthwatering straight away. Portion size is amazing and I have to applaud the ability to create such a high standard meal - the whipped cream looks decadent and like a chocolate chip icecream scoop that doesn’t melt, the waffles are of good portion and the lemon code adds some extra sweetness to the meal and contrasts with the strawberry macaroons. I would say that for some people it might be too sweet but it is undeniable that I was wishing to take a little nibble at all times (just because they looks absolutely outstanding!). I would definitely leave the suggestion to make a vegan batter and a more allergen friendly version!

- Not your Mama’s Oats: I had seen the menu online on Zomato and I saw the oatmeal was just vegetarian (and not dairy free) but once we were at the venue, I happily discovered that they had upgraded that dish to having a vegan version too! Obviously I was very keen on trying it and even though I am not sure what they use to blend the oats and create that creamy final mixture, I think that using coconut milk or even coconut cream would definitely take this meal to the next level and add some much needed sweetness to it. Again, I’m not entirely sure what the toppings and curd was but i did enjoy the peaches with strawberries! As opposed to the acai bowl, here the puffed granola had some hazelnuts which is again interesting.

- Garden of Eden with added smoked salmon: I am a more sweet type of foodie but I must admit that this meal won me over. Not only it was such an artistic creation (specially with the avocado!) but the combination smoked salmon + egg + chickpea avocado hummus was THE BEST THING EVER. Not even kidding. No, sir. That humorous was possibly the most delicious one I’ve ever had in my life! Obviously that the smoked salmon makes even the most basic dishes look and taste good, but not only it was mind-blowing but also the radish slices and peas were sensational! Even the purple cauliflower was stupendous! 😍👌 like I said this was a phenomenal meal in every aspect and I would 101% recommend!

- Banana Boost and Breakfast Bonanza: I was slightly indecisive between two smoothies so I ended up mixing two of them and creating my own blend 😂 the result: UNREMARKABLE 🙌🥳 banana smoothies are always a GOOD option and blending them with the right ingredients turned out my ridiculous yet simple request bewildering! Even my friend was impressed and it was without a doubt the best drink on the table! Thank you to the team for being so friendly, cooperative and indulging my request. This was a WINNER 👏

- Chai Soy Latte: certainly a magnificent presentation with the fashionable mug and delicate pink flowers and basically just... my favourite sweet cup of tea? Although it’s not a cup or tea 😂👏 I am a huge (and I mean HUGE chai lover) and I just love the blend of spices. This one was just the right amount of sweetness and you can never go wrong with chai indeed. I usually choose almond milk but the waitress kindly suggested that it would work better with soy milk and I took her suggestion (foodie tip: always listen to the staff’s advice!). It was pure lush indeed and i wouldn’t change anything here 👏

- Matcha Soy Latte: latte art was beautiful and it definitely worked well with soy milk - again, the waitress suggested soy instead of other plant milk. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that drinks here are bigger that the usual glass size and that the price remains the same as in other places. Using a thick mug to serve these hot drinks was immensely appreciated and I do think all other cafes should follow Short Straw’s principles here 👏 I have to add that the matcha latte was without a doubt well achieved and that there was no residual powder on the bottom, which shows the quality of this drink too.

- Hot Bounty: like OMG. Yes, OMG. I don’t usually ask for chocolate drinks because of the lactose content in chocolate and although I know some venues do use vegan chocolate, carob or even raw cacao, it’s not something I frequently ask for. And this, was just WOW. It tastes exactly like a bounty, those children chocolates with some coconut mixed in (they use coconut milk here) and all I could think of while having this drink was sitting by the wood fire with a blanket and marshmallows, feeling the warmth from this hot chocolate. Such, such, an impressive drink and I think that to make it even more perfect, I would choose it to be served in a mug (similarly to the other drinks) and even add a sneaky marshmallow for decoration.

The venue is extremely popular and you can feel the frenetic positive vibes in every corner of this place even before entering! It is a busy place (specially on a Saturday like we went!) but I don’t see that as a bad thing - on the contrary! It is undoubtedly one of the picturesque venues of Melbourne's and it reflects the chilled, down to earth and friendly Aussie lifestyle.

And trust me, you don’t have to wait much at all to be seated because things run in a very fast past and at the same time, smoothly (no, you don’t feel any pressure or rushed in here!). The staff is certainly very attentive and friendly and they try to accommodate every request that you have and they even gave blankets for you to borrow if you want to sit outside on a cold Melbourne day (or even inside if you need that extra warmth!).

Strawpecular moments here, indeed! 🥳 I have such happy memories from my visit and and I very keen to go back and try their winter menu! 😍🙌

Brunching with my friend here, and I loved it! Super quirky, fun cafe tucked away just off a main street in Hawthorn.

Super cute, bright & fun atmosphere! Buzz Lightyear holding all of the coffee cups made my day! So many plants scattered throughout the cafe, brickwork was prominent & the artwork on the far wall was so aesthetic. Such a great place to sit to work or catch up with a friend.

I went for the sweeter options on this visit & I'm so glad I did!
I had a great peanut butter smoothie! Super tasty, full of peanut butter, chocolatey goodness.

I scoffed down these delicious waffles. They were soft & not super thick. I really loved the combination of lemon curd, whipped cream & strawberry coulis. It made the dish tart, creamy & sweet all in one mouthful. My one complaint about the dish would be that I wanted more macarons because they were delicious!

The staff were so friendly, fun & enjoyed getting involved in my video (on Instagram)! Quick service with a smile which is what I love!

It was nice to visit this cafe for brunch. The service was friendly and professional, and we got one of the last tables which was lucky.

My piccolo latte was just luke warm, just! I was going to send it back but I just drank it anyway as the cafe was packed. It was ok.

My partner had an organic orange juice which was good.

Foodwise I had an eggs benny w pulled pork on sourdough toast. The Benedict sauce was delicious and plentiful, which was great.

My partner had a New York style chicken bagel w sun dried tomato and avocado, hash browns, and scrambled eggs! Hahaha yep we were hungry.

I was still full at dinner even though we had this food for brunch lol.

There were a lot of staff but we had to wait for over half an hour for our food, but the cafe was packed I guess. But it was worth the wait as the food was excellent!

This place is worth a visit.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Gleferrie Rd, Hawthorn then Short Straw is the place for you. Just around the corner, down a tree lined street, is this pretty little cafe. What it lacks in size is certainly made up with heart. The back wall has the cutest mural, and the rest of the cafe is light, white and airy. The lovely staff are so accommodating, and will make you feel welcome no matter the time of day. I have been here many times, and it's always packed full of people which is a testament to it's popularity in a suburb full of great cafes.

As it was mid morning, we bypassed the cocktail menu... but you have to love it when a cafe is liscenced. It can make those weekend brunches that little more indulgent, or a lazy afternoon in the sunshine that little bit more fun! Instead we chose delicious juices and coffee and settled into the serious business of choosing from the menu.

We started with 'Not your Mother's oats' an absolutely delicious spin on porridge. Seriously... porridge with ice cream... whose crazy, but brilliant idea was that? With all the fresh stone fruits it was an absolute dream to eat, and I will never look at my own homemade oats the same again!!

We also had the very photogenic waffles which were light and fluffy with a delicious, tangy curd, rich icecream, fruit and raspberry coulis. The little macaroons were a little treat, and gave great contrast to the tartness of the curd. Who can say no to a macaroon at breakfast time?

With so many great options on the menu, I can't wait to return to try more of their amazing dishes, and maybe next time I will find that little table in the sun and have a cocktail or two!!

A great venue, visually great and lots of natural light. The food is great and super presentable however I found my avo smash a little too avo overload (not necessarily the bad thing!) and my poached egg wasn’t as runny as I would have liked. They were quite busy so were in a rush to get us to order and leave. Otherwise good!

I've been wanting to go to this cafe for a long time and finally I had the opportunity. I'd been wanting those waffles ever since I saw them online and they are beautiful. Covered in a nice lemony curd with little macarons filled with chocolate. The pouring sauce, I actually think the dish could stand alone without it, but a good pour always adds an element. The other dishes also looked amazing.

Absolute delight!

The cafe is bright, full of plants and quirky features like chairs on the wall. I suppose if you want to get that birds eye view of the food you can.

We ordered three dishes.
Glorious greens
Fritters
Waffles

All looked perfect. Great colours and contrasts. The waffles had macaroons which was a crunchy touch to the dish. Along with a light fluffy cream and tangy lemon curd. The waffles themselves weren’t too heavy or overly sweet.

The fritters were crunchy on the outside and soft textured on the inside with a good level of spice. The chutney that accompanies it offers a slight sweetness.

The glorious greens were glorious. The plate looked ace. The onions with whipped ricotta added a nice touch to what could be a boring dish. The crunchy chickpeas added texture and another element to the dish as well as a balsamic glaze. The veggies and smashed peas base were quality. My only complaint is my eggs were more hard boiled rather than poached. Come on I need my yolk porn!

Lovely staff, cool cafe, great food. Would go back for sure

I have been to short straw twice and the service got better the second time. I was happy to see the vegetarian bagel and excited to try it. I ordered Halloumi bagel: New York bagel, fried halloumi, lettuce, tomato, smoked bbq cream cheese, pickles and onion with fries and bbq sauce. Cheese on top of the bagel was a nice addition. I liked the flavours of sauces as well. It was very filling, which I loved. And, most importantly, my latte tasted delicious. Also, avoid sitting on the stools by the side if you want to have a comfortable seating. It was quite a struggle for me.

For my most recent visit I ordered the BREAKFAST BONANZA smoothie, CHILLI TOFU SCRAMBLE and shared the SHORT & SWEET açai bowl! All great choices!

My brunch date ordered the GLORIOUS GREENS and PB SMOOTHIE!

Located on Glenferrie Road, Short Straw is a buzzing café that offers some incredible and impressive dishes that satisfy your brunch and lunch cravings!

The café is very spacious and an open venue that attracts the morning sun through its windows - very welcoming as well!

The menu was rather extensive and I noticed that there are a few similar items compared with their sister café, Turning Point in Elsternwick.

We ordered The Short Straw which came with sweetcorn, kale and zucchini fritters accompanied with sliced avocado, tomato relish and whipped goats cheese. We had the New York Style Chicken Bagel which came with poached chicken, spinach and chipotle mayo as well as the Sumo Fried Chicken Burger.

For drinks, we had the Nutella milkshake and the Summer Lovin’ Juice which came with apple, celery, cucumber, spinach and kale.

When the food and drinks came out, we were stunned at how beautiful the dishes appeared! Extremely vibrant colours and the dishes were presented very appealingly. The food was divine and generous and every bite just got better.

The Fried Chicken Burger was extremely crunchy and flavoursome and cooked perfectly while the Wasabi Mayo definitely hit the spot too! The fritters were just as you would want them - crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle - the pea mash was a perfect accompaniment to the dish. Our favourite dish was definitely the New York Style Chicken Bagel - the poached chicken was delicious, bagel toasted well and the avocado was ripe and fresh.

The Nutella Milkshake was awesome! Not only did it look cool but it definitely hit the spot. The Summer Lovin’ (love the name) was refreshing and went great with the food.

Overall, we had an awesome dining experience and without a doubt, would nominate this place as one of our favourite eateries to dine in!

I definitely did not draw the Short Straw for getting to eat here!

Given how much publicity Short Straw gets on social media, this place has long been on the top on my list of spots to try. And it did not disappoint.

I got the Stacks on Waffles - their famous waffle dish with lemon curd, strawberry coulis and macarons. The flavour combo worked together flawlessly. I love waffles and I love macarons so this dish was my kind of heaven. I tried some of my friends fritters and they were delicious too.

Inside the cafe, it’s both modern and comfortable and just off from the busyness of Glenferrie Road - it’s the perfect place to catch up with a mate for brunch.

Short Straw is a peaceful open venue which attracts the morning sun down its side windows. It has a well built menu with some impressive visually stunning dishes that back up on flavour. It has a loyal following too it seems as I was gobsmacked at how many people were in for an early breakfast/brunch.

We started with coffee and a punchy Doctor C juice and funnily enough we both decided on bagels. I tried the chicken bagel with bacon and the holy halloumi bagel. Both were huge and came with fries. My chicken bagel was nice and creamy and full of flavour. It was a difficult eat but I forgave that because it was so flavoursome.

We really enjoyed our visit to Short Straw which is why we keep coming back (our third time now).

Previous Review
We enjoyed two very nice iconic dishes, coffees and a delightful smoothie called the breakfast bonanza which had a good flavour but a subtle sweetness, a good item to accompany our decadent brunch dishes.

For brunch we chose the Charcoal Charger which was a porridge dish made with activated charcoal organic oats, turmeric poached pear, oreo crumb and caramelised marshmallow. There was strawberry soy milk for pouring. The pears were perfectly poached and added a nice contrast the this deep delicious and wintery dish.

Perhaps in contrast out next dish was almost celebrating that winter is almost over. Stacks on Waffles were light and fluffy waffles with lemon curd, injectable strawberry coulis, poppy seeded cream and two lovely macarons. Bright and cheery, I love the symmetry of this dish and how easy it was to divide into two for sharing. It was quite sweet dish and a fun dish to eat and explore.

The coffee was good and strong and there were a range of milk alternatives ( but not lactose free option).

I’m glad we finally got to try this high caliber cafe just off Glenferrie. Thanks so much for inviting us in.

Yet another lovely cafe in Hawthorn that offers a delicious menu along with prompt service and friendly/ attentive staff. (We came in on a weekday so it wasn’t that busy.) Great location next to all the other cafes, restaurants, clothes stores and more importantly, Swinburne University. Food-wise, the portions were generous, the dishes were presented beautifully and the flavours were well-balanced overall. The smashed avocado was near-perfect whilst the ‘stacks on waffles’ was a little rich. The tumeric latte was tasty and the size of it was big (considering most places sell it for roughly $5 in the normal latte glass). Coffee was excellent. Two thumbs up!

Short Straw brings a much needed cool injection to Hawthorn. Interiors are oh so pretty, staff are oh so friendly and plates are oh so instagrammable.

Smoothies are a real strong point, and if I lived more locally I'd be popping in on a weekly basis for a vitamin injection. Better still, all freshly made juices can be spiked with a spirit. This is suggestive of the ethos of Short Straw, which seems to be putting the fun into fitness focussed food.

The menu has a number of vegan or low-carb options such as an Asian inspired tofu scramble or the very photogenic Garden Of Eden. Ingredients boast plenty of flavour, dishes are paired well, and despite reading healthy servings are HUGE.

Crowds seemed to be swelling in for burgers and bagels, so those looking for a lunch option in the area would definitely find something pleasing here.

Short Straw is located just off Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn. With plenty of windows & high ceilings, it’s a lovely light filled space, decorated with lots of greenery & some wall art. The staff are friendly & welcoming & it’s a very popular place.

The menu is impressive so we started with mandatory coffees which always assists with decision making. The Undercover Roasters coffee was perfect. We chose a few dishes to share along with juices.

The Holy-Halloumi Bagel was a big hit with both of us, the fillings were fresh & tasty & it was served with shoestring fries & barbecue sauce.

The Sumo Fried Chicken Burger was also a very generous serving. I loved the Asian flavours in the burger, wakame slaw, wasabi mayo alongside nori salt fries which we couldn’t stop eating. I found the chicken was well cooked & very tender, quite a tough task when using chicken breast & I was impressed with the crispy coating too.

We finished with the Stacks on Waffles, one of my favourite sweet dishes going around as they’re not too sweet. The flavours of lemon curd & strawberry coulis work perfectly together & it’s a very pretty dish.

I loved trying some newer dishes on the regularly changing menu, I’m sure this is what brings the crowds back time & time again. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, thanks so much for having us.

Dishes are very instragram worthy here and best of all tastes great. I think this was the first bagel I've actually liked, crispy bread, tasty filling. I couldn't choose between the sweet and savoury dishes so opted for the waffle as well. Loved how the cream on top was light and not heavy at all, the macaroons were fun and delicious, it just kept me wanting more. The garden of eden was different, seemed like the most healthy of the options so good if you're big on veggies. Would recommend!

Short Straw (sibling of Collective Espresso and - my favourite- Turning Point) is Instagram-worthy cafe if I've ever seen one, from the atmosphere to the pretty plates to the people who seem to frequent it. But unlike other places with offerings that merely look nice, the dishes at Short Straw also taste incredible, pairing great and innovative flavour combinations.

My pick upon visiting was the Garden of Eden, a crowd favourite. I thought it may be a bit too light without a carby base of some sort, but it was perfect. I was so full (but not too full) after devouring it. It's a dish that at once feels angelic and decadent. Hummus and avo is a favourite match of mine, so the presence of this two in this plate was divine. The addition of housemade pickled cauliflower and a herby pesto rounded out the dish.

Of course, no brunch is complete without a coffee or two, which Short Straw does incredibly well. You can expect silky smooth soy coffees with no milk seperation, which is a skill that proves difficult for even the best baristas. Short Straw is the kind of place you could spend all day at with a notebook and a hot drink if they didn't close at 4pm.

Underrated cafe!

Unique food. Creative dishes, that look fab on the plate and taste yummy. One of the most interesting creative menus I have seen in Melbourne. That is a double tick!

My Garden of Eden looked beautiful. I feared for a second that it would be a bit bland, as this is a mostly green veggies dish with some picked cauliflower, but the vinagrette-like green sauce linked everything nicely together. Tick! Jumbo sized eggs. Tick! Perfectly poached eggs. Tick! I would have liked a bit of toasted bread sticks perhaps, to allow for a bit of more texture and flavour.

Good coffee. Tick!

Service was reasonably paced and very friendly. Tick!

Cozy and intimate, but also modern and airy. Tick! A bit small, so its really busy during the weekends.

Cannot believe how long it has taken me to try Short Straw! Finally we went on the weekend, and really enjoyed our experience. The space where a Short Straw is is really cool! Even though the address says Glenferrie Road, the entrance is actually around the corner on Mary Street. The back of the cafe has a really cute brick wall and sun room-type roof, which is really different and individual compared to other cafes nearby.

We ordered the Stacks on Waffles which were just as good as everyone says. The banana element in the waffles was just delicious - and the lemon curd and whipped cream gave the dish a bit of tang. The macaroons topped it off very nicely. We also had the Avocado Smash which was one of my favourite smashes so far. I loved the pesto in it - and the abundance of feta, and the Pepitas on top to give it some crunch! I got eggs on the side which they happily scrambled for me instead of poached. Also got mushrooms (of course!!) and they were terrific.

Serving sizes were generous and we were absolutely full by the end!! We still had room to finish off with a banana smoothie and a couple of gingerbread men though hehe! Thanks for having us Short Straw, we absolutely loved our experience!!

Another great brunch spot in Melbourne was Short Straw. Offering typical brunch and modern Australian dishes, we found their meals fresh and delicious. We had the poke bowl and really enjoyed the chunky salmon pieces and fresh ponzu dressing. We also had the waffles, which we thought could be crispier on the outside but we did love the little treats of macarons, whipped cream, lemon curd and strawberry coulis that came with the waffles. Venue-wise, it was spacious and bright inside with wooden fixtures all over which made for a great bunch ambiance.

A beautiful space in Hawthorn filled with natural light. They have made use of the space with how they have laid out the seating. Food reasonably priced and presented beautifully. The Waffle lacked zing, I would have loved something more tart and I found the Polenta and Mushroom dish quite small for the price.

I popped back in today (13.01.19), and enjoyed a couple more dishes. I had the polenta again as it really is delicious, that truffle cream is fab. The Not Your Mums Oats is so refreshing and a great dish to start the morning with!

Randomly decided to come here to have a breakfast. The place and the ambience was airy, bright and instagramable! The staffs were greeted us nicely upon our arrival and we were easily got our table (we come here around 8am in the morning)

FOOD
Poke bowl was delicious!consist of red rice top up ponzu dressing with cured salmon black sesame seed, seaweed salad, avocado, green beans, corn and wakame. All of the combination was perfectly balance and seasoned well. Remind me of the day i was in HAWAI. Missing those moments.

Eggs Benedict was amazing!consist of perfectly poached eggs on crispy potato and braise pork hash with spinach and hollandaise sauce on top. The portion was generous, we can’t even finished the food because we’re too full. The flavours was all perfectly balanced, seasoned well and the pork was so tender.

What i love about this cafe is that the menu is for all day (breakfast until lunch), which means we have many food choice to choose. However, the waiting game was a bit excessive.. Got the food after half an hour waiting🙃

Overall, good food good place..will come back for sure!

Visited Short Straw this afternoon. After a beautiful walk along St Kilda beach we were definitely feeling hungry. As soon as we walked in we noticed the gorgeous rustic decor, loved the hanging plant pots from the ceiling.
Not long after we ordered the dishes came out. I really enjoyed my fried halloumi bagel with added bacon. I was worried it may be greasy (ie. bacon plus fried halloumi) but to my delight it was perfect.
Their signature waffles were a great way to end a delicious lunch. Beautifully plated up and not too dense or sweet. I will be back to try the other dishes on the new winter menu.

The days are definitely getting cooler. On a crisp Sunday morning, I ventured out to Hawthorn to check out Short Straw. I’d enjoyed my visits to their sister venues Collective and Turning Point, so I was excited to see what they had on offer. The space is open but still very cosy, with plenty of wooden fixtures and plant life. I started off with a golden latte – heavy on the spice, which is the way I like it.

This cafe has been one of the most consistent in quality, service and flavours! I really enjoyed the new winter additions on the menu. My favourite dish was the charcoal porridge, it was well balanced and perfect for a cold day! I’m also obsessed with the halloumi bagel, in my opinion it is a must try!

I tried three dishes at 8.30am on a Sunday morning. The Garden of Eden is very refreshing. If you love peas, you'll love this. Thankfully I love peas. The wild mushrooms with truffle cream on crispy polenta, was a standout, it's not an 'instagram' dish but it sure is pretty, and it tastes really good. Well balance with crunch, smooth, smokey, cheesey. It's very comforting. I'd come back for this.

On the sweet side, we HAD to get the stacks on waffles, which is saffron and caramelised banana waffles with strawberry coulis, lemon curd, whipped cream and a macaron. I thought this would be too much for me to deal with but I enjoyed it. The banana waffles was a nice change, it was like banana bread and waffles had a baby. It looks pretty, but it tastes a treat. The addition of lemon curd ensured this wasn't too intense.

The fit out is very modern, it's cosy and there's a great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly, and were attentive to everyone - not just the blogger who was invited (me). If someone drew the short straw to come here, then that person was very lucky - because I did enjoy myself.

Short Straw is a lovely cafe located just off busy Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn.

Stopping by for breakfast with my sister, I ordered the infamous Stacks on Waffles and a peanut butter smoothie whilst my sister had the poke bowl with an added poached egg and the hot bounty.

Everything we ordered was beautifully presented. The waffles were almost too pretty to eat and the sesame seed coated salmon in the poke bowl looked stunning.

If you have a sweet tooth you’ll love the waffles, the waffles and cream were quite sweet but nicely balanced from the lemon curd. Whilst if you’re after something a bit more on the healthy side you should consider the poke bowl. My sister loved the generous chunks of sesame seed coated salmon and considered this one of the best poke bowls she’s had to date.

In addition to the great food, we loved the warm hospitality and overall atmosphere at Short Straw. The staff were friendly and more than happy to assist.

Overall we had a lovely experience at Short Straw and I thank them for having us. I highly recommend that you check them out, I rate Short Straw ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars.

After seeing many snaps of the famous waffles, i had to try it out.

I loved how the waffles were soft and sweet while the lemon curd topping was slightly sour. With both combined they were perfect.

Also tried the eggs benny, but it was nothing special.
Overall, highly recommend the waffles!

Update (18/1/20) we visited to try their new menu !
The new menu was more exciting although there were no dessert item. We loved the mushroom medley and their fritters.

So lucky to be invited to try out the famous short straw! Just off the busy glenferri road is the cutest brunch spot.

The atmosphere was great with an indoor and outdoor area as well as large windows. We came in the morning but it go busy quickly.

We had the eggs Benedict with pork has which was unique. The eggs were cooked perfectly and complemented the pork hash well. We also had the fritters which weren’t the usually flat fritters but chunky fritters. The fritters were full of flavour and with a side of bacon is was the perfect brekky.

Last but not least we had the famous waffles! They were soft and fluffy topped with lemon curd and cream it was the perfect desserts.

Definitely a place to check out!

An institution in Hawthorn with amazing coffee from undercover roasters, creative menu like no other and experienced staff. Short straw gets the job done, they are confident in the menu and have people lining up. We tried the garden of eden with amazing avocado art that you really only see on google. There was a lot of peas, kale, hummus, radish and purple cauliflower for contrast. Every mouthful felt fresh. My friend had the vegan euphoria. The presentation was absolutely amazing, it looks like a bird's nest. So many delicious flavors of black quinoa, fried cauli, cashews, avo, chilli and lemon. This cafe is a great place to be, you will definitely see an updated review soon.

Starving at brunch a few weeks back I had the Wild mushrooms dish with porkbelly and fried haloumi added on...& what more can you ask for? Mushroom, truffle, polenta, haloumi & pork belly! It was gigantic of course, and our waitress was more than happy to give me a take away box so none went to waste.

Saw this cafe pop up in the Entertainment Book updates, so we decided to check it out. Great, airy space, family friendly and yummy food. We ordered the eggs benny and beef burger - the eggs benny were delicious and the beef burger was nice (possibly slightly under seasoned, but I don’t mind less salt in my food).

A huge thumbs up for the service - our waitress was really nice and on the ball. We sat near the cash register and I overheard a customer giving feedback about his burger being underdone and how he could only manage to eat around the edges and the guy at the register took on the feedback graciously, didn’t charge for the burger and thanked the customer for his feedback (and seemed to mean it too). Great service and delicious food - we’ll be back!

Our visit this morning was amazing overall, nice touches such as music playing in the background just added to the experience.

Anyone from our Instagram page knows it's all about desserts so we sampled the Peanut Butter Milkshake, the Breakfast Milkshake, 'Stacks on Waffles' and 'Coconut Bomb'. Had a nice seat at the window with plenty of light for our photos too, which you can see attached to this review or at @desserts.pleasure (instagram)

Starting with the waffles! There's actually not much I can suggest to be improved here, maybe a tiny little bit more of the strawberry coulis (in those little syringe thingies!) but that's me being really picky. Overall they were some of the best waffles I've had. Macarons and the lemon curd was a nice touch to help diversify the dish a little bit. Very sweet, not dry or claggy and overall very glad I ordered this.

The two milkshakes we had were Peanut Butter and Breakfast. The breakfast one was great, personally I wasn't keen on the Peanut butter one but I think that comes down to personal preference. I should've tried the banana milkshake (or even the oreo one which I believe is only on the menu for a short time?) instead.

Finally, the Coconut Bomb was very delicious and healthy. It could have used a few more berries perhaps, or even a smoothie underneath for extra taste. The serving size on this breakfast-style bowl was more than enough.

Overall a 9/10 which is the highest we've given a cafe yet! Great experience and definitely try the waffles when you're next in the area.

We had the pleasure in finding another great brunch / lunch place in Hawthorn recently which we’re excited to share with you. Hawthorn has always been buzzing with great eateries and this one does not disappoint. Short Straw is a cafe located on Glenferrie Rd and is pretty central in Hawthorn. To start off we ordered the Matcha latte and Peanut butter smoothie with banana, peanut butter, chocolate, almond milk, honey and cinnamon. APRIL 2018:
I took my dad on one of my blogger lunches on Friday this week and we visited Short Straw in Hawthorn. This is my second visit to the beautiful venue, tucked away from the busy Glenferrie Rd, on Mary St. They are in the same family as Collective Espresso in Camberwell. We had to sit at a communal table, which was a shame, but there are plenty of tables in varying sizes.

NOTE: Both times I have visited, I have parked on Mary St and received a parking ticket - park in the carpark on the other side of Glenferrie Rd. I might have had a free lunch, but it cost me $95 in parking fines. They don't muck around.

The coffee here tastes great - I had a strong latte and Dad had a regular latte. Neither of them lasted long. I was going to order a smoothie, but I needed the caffeine hit.

We ordered 3 dishes to share - the Eggs Benny with avocado, the New York Style Bagel with fries (I had this last time too - it's delicious - I had to have it again) & the Stack on Waffles.

I had ordered the Eggs Benny at a previous visit to Collective Espresso and had not read the menu properly. The braised pork is mixed in to the potato hash and has a similar consistency to a tuna patty. I was not a fan, but Dad said it tasted very nice and that the pork had a nice salty flavour. The eggs were poached perfectly and there was a very generous serving of hollandaise.

The New York Style Bagel comes absolutely stuffed to the brim with semi-dried tomatoes, chicken & avocado. Every bite that I took, bits were falling out. It tasted great though and i was very full by the end of the meal. The shoestring fries were cold, but tasted nice.

I was very excited to try the Stacks on Waffles - they have been popping up on my Instagram feed a lot lately and looked delicious. They were a bit smaller than I expected, but since Dad and I were sharing after having eaten something else, I did not mind. The lemon curd had an absolutely fantastic flavour and the chocolate macaroons were delicious. The waffles had a great banana-infused flavour and it was nice to have cream on top instead of ice-cream (so it didn't melt while we were eating everything else).

The staff at Short Straw are lovely and very attentive. The food is delicious and very decently priced. As long as you don't get a parking fine, like I did, you'll enjoy a wonderful visit at Short Straw. Thanks for having us, team :)

MAY 2017:
Short Straw is such a gorgeous venue! It's on a side street off Glenferrie Rd in Hawthorn and is full of natural light, pale coloured furniture & greenery - stunning :)

We went here for a very late brunch on a Saturday and were not disappointed. The place was pumping, but there was no queue, which is often a relief when brunching in Melbourne these days.

We ordered two serves of the poached chicken & avocado "New York style bagels", that came with a side of fries ($14.50) and shared a serve of the Brioche French Toast topped with vanilla cream, poached pear, caramelised banana & Persian fairy floss ($18.50? no longer on menu).

The food was absolutely delicious and the serving sizes were very generous. The bagel was stuffed to the brim with fillings and I'm glad that we shared the desert dish. The coffee and fresh OJ that we ordered also went down a treat.

The staff were very friendly and worked really well as a team. While we were eating, one of the staff sat down to eat her lunch and one of her colleagues had written her a note on a napkin - so cute!

Definitely worth a visit when you have the time - everything on the menu looks great, but these dishes are definitely a must try!

Picking the short straw is not always a bad thing… Short Straw cafe is found just off Glenferrie Road, idly sitting amongst leafy trees and suburban houses. > The Short Straw- sweetcorn and zucchini fritters with sliced avocado, tomato chili chutney & whipped goats cheese AND New York Style Bagels- Quinoa, chickpea & potato patty with house-made slaw, smoked eggplant relish & tomato <

Short Straw is a trendy café just off Glenferrie road in the heart of Hawthorn. They have some amazing food on their menu and we couldn’t decide what to get! We felt like a bagel and some fritters and they had exactly that!
How good does this bagel look?! We saw it on the menu and had to get it! It sounded amazing and it sure tasted amazing. It is a huge bagel that is extremely filling. It has so many healthy elements in it, which leaves you feeling full and energized for the rest of the day. The slaw is so crunchy and every time we look at this picture we are drooling over how good the slaw looks 🤤 Everything about this bagel was amazing and we recommend trying it!
The fritters are another delicious meal that we demolished. They look so small but they’re actually quite filling. The presentation is beautiful and the flavours worked well together. Avo is always a great addition to any dish and certainly works well with this one! The tomato chutney gives the dish a bit of a tang, which is great because you will not get bored of this dish😋 The service is great here and we will definitely be back

Lovely, bright industrial cafe with an interesting, outside-the-box menu. I popped in before a business meeting on a Thursday morning and was greeted straight away. A menu was brought out and my coffee order taken, but I then had to wait about 10-15 minutes before the waitress came back to take my meal order.I chose the Wild Mushrooms with crispy polenta - absolutely divine! The hint of chilli and garlic in the mushroom mix really set it off. The truffle cream was nice but quite rich, so I used only a fraction of the very generous portion served. There are a few vegan/vegetarian options, which is always nice to see. Can't wait to return and try out the other excellent dishes.

I ordered the Short Straw (sweet corn & zucchini fritters) which was the perfect breakfast, super delish & filling. My husband had The Long Straw, which looked great but he said was disappointing- only one piece of toast with two eggs (pet hate for both of us), tasteless hash brown, & overall a small serving for what we assumed is their version of a 'big breakfast' being the most expensive item on the menu
The coffee was good & my golden latte was exceptional. Staff friendly but not overly attentive- very cruisy vibe overall & would definitely return.

It’s raining cats and dogs in Melbourne and we’re keen to spend our Millennial cash on avocado smashes 😉 .

Popped into this cafe after a recommendation from a co-worker of mine as the menu looked pretty good. I ordered the waffles and my friend ordered the braised pork with potato. The waffles were a bit soft though the accompaniments made the dish taste really good (e.g. great macarons and yummy curd and coulis). The pork had the seal of approval from my friend and the chai latte tasted really good. I came back the following week however, they had a waiting list and i only had an hour before work so i just ended up getting a take away chai (which took quite long to be honest...)

The service wasn't fantastic but we did go on a very busy afternoon and were sat at the very back corner. The waiters however, were lovely. I would really like to come back soon

The cafe is located in the streets amongst the houses away from the shopping district, it was refreshing to be able to dine away from the activity on the main road. I went with something different than my latte and had a Prana Chai. It was fragrant from the spices and had a faint sweetness that doesn’t linger.

When you pop into cafes as bright, airy and well decorated with greenery as this one you tend to have the same expectations. Good, simple, relatively healthy food - however you may leave a tiny bit hungry.

Well this cafe completely blew myself and my mans mind. The waffles with lemon curd, raspberry coulis and macaroons exceeded expectations in regards to flavour. The man tried the crispy polenta, wild mushrooms, pork belly dish and was completely surprised that the pork belly was to that of what you would find in a Melbourne fine dining restaurant.

Portions were large, quick service and to top it off there is a decadent dessert cabinet to pick up something on the way out....hello chocolate brownie doughnut 🤤

Hidden in a side street off Glenferrie Road, Short Straw is a busy cafe in the Hawthorn area that prides itself on both innovative dishes and old favourites, and a range of light snacks. Easily accessible by tram 16 and close to Glenferrie Station, the cafe has fast become a favourite in the area. I was surprised at how spacious the interior of Short Straw was - from the exterior, you wouldn't expect such a large space. There's two main areas of seating; one of which is in a slightly elevated area that has light streaming in from above as well as the windows to one side, as well as outdoor seating for small groups. The designs on the walls is minimalistic, with the white walls contrasting with the plants and wooden chairs (yes chairs!) hanging from the ceiling. Upbeat old school music from the 90s played in the background, which is a nice throwback.

Eggs benny looked great but was a bit bland, could've done with more hollandaise sauce, had to add salt for more flavour. Potato to pork ratio in the hash could've been better overall was average. Smashed avo was pretty good hard to get this one wrong. Chai latte was nice and mocha not bad. Like the venue, lots of light and plants and not too bustling. Would come back to try the waffles but definitely not the best cafe in the area.

Simply awesome!! Was recommended to try this little hidden away gem (except for the the locals).. I wasn't disappointed... we continued to eye off other patrons food as they were being served EVEB after we had finished our meals!!

The poke bowl with the salmon chunks and rice corn 🌽 seaweed etc made healthy eating fun and easy!! The lemon and Japanese nori infused the the fresh flavours perfectly!!

The chicken burger 🍔 although looked over cooked and dry as it came out was the opposite. The dry crust on the outside gave way to a juicy tender breast chicken piece.. that in itself I would have been content as a meal with the salad and side chips!! Placed between a heavy brioche??? and boom!! you just wanna get up and dance with each mouthful!! however be warned like all good parties... things can come to a halt fast! The brioche come down is like "booooooooooo"!! finisjing the burger almost became a chore as the brioche was pretty heavy! YMMV I guess. But for me I'd prefer a nice toasted brioche with not so much butter. At the end I didn't eat a buffet to experience food coma but I certainly felt like I was on my way..

Happy eating y'all!!!

The cafe was located on a little street next to the busy Glenferrie Rd. The coffee beans that Short Straw are using from the Undercover Roasters.
#Poke bowl#-beautifully presented heathy poke bowl filled with multigrain rice, avocado, cured salmon, edamame beans, corns, seaweed salad, ponzu dressing and editable flowers. The multigrain rice gave the whole dish more chewy and nutty flavours. Well cured fat and smooth salmon was my favourite!
#eggs Benny#-crispy potato and braised pork hash topped with poached eggs and served with wilted spinach and hollandaise sauce. Soft and mushy potato mashed mixed with shredded pork meat and made into square hash. It had beautiful crunchy outlays. Eggs were cooked perfectly, and tasted good with the nice sauce. However, it was a heavy dish better save it for lunch.

Ordered:
- Avocado Art
- Persian Beef and Ancient Grain Salad
- Bowl of Chips

Avocado Art was aesthetically pleasing but lacked a little something something (maybe because it was vegetarian?). Also, it was super oily and I didn't know which of the ingredients would've produced that much oil!
The salad was filling and yoghurt definitely added an element of oomph to the dish! Would recommend!

The tuna was very fresh. Great interior with lots of natural lighting. Service was decent but could do with some improvements, took a long time for the waitress to bring over menus and water.  Overall a lovely experience and would come back.

What a rustic and inviting cafe, the interior is so unique, the hanging plant baskets add a refreshing touch to the cafe. The staff were friendly and very efficient, maybe a little too efficient as I didn't even get a chance to put my bag down before being asked if I would like a drink, but hey I guess it's better than sitting and waiting. I was drawn to this cafe as I drove through Hawthorn looking for a breakfast spot!Located down a tree covered side street off Glenferrie Road, it feels much more private than the bustling Glenferrie area surrounding it! The interior is lovely- a really social space with separate food and payment counters and little bars and benches, as well as tables. I sat on a bench with a lovely succulent garden running down the centre, separating the communal space. I was a difficult customer- I asked the "new girl" (who was extremely helpful and friendly) if I could order the Long Straw (big breakkie) with avocado instead of bacon and eggs. She asked the chef and my request was accepted.  The soy coffee was lovely and so was the food, which exceeded my expectations. I expected tinned beans and cooked frozen hashbrows but I was in luck! The hashbrowns appear to be made in house- delish slabs of fried mash potato! The plate of food was adorned with wilted spinach, home made baked beans, hash browns, herbs, girlled tomato, bread, relish, my extra avo (am I forgetting anything?)

All up; great feed, lovely interior and lovely staff! Good job guys- I'll be back :)

A really trendy place with fairly decent food. Some of the menu is a little hit and miss, and they have a habit of taking the really delicious things off the menu when they change it, but over all the standard of the food and coffee is fairly high. The high ceilings and plants really give the place a pleasant atmosphere. My biggest complaint is with the staff; it is obvious that they cut costs on the training. While they're all polite - no problems there! - they seem unable to cope when the place gets busy. The last time I went there I waited at least 5 minutes at the door without so much as being greeted by the staff. I'm not expecting the red carpet to be rolled out, but a simple 'We'll be with you in a minute" would have been nice. It's also very hard to get their attention when you are seated; they don't scan the floor, they don't see when you try to wave them down. It's just a little thing, but it doesn't make you feel welcome.BUT, all that being said, I would go back. It's only really a small complaint. Plus, the zucchini fritters are amazing. Definitely fork out the extra $2 or so for the poached egg on top.

Located just off Glenferrie Road, Short Straw is a spacious and bright cafe, with lots of simple and light-wood decor and plants in every corner and hanging from the ceiling. It wasn't overly busy and we managed to get a table without problems. We thought the food was decent. We ordered the baked mushrooms and chicken bagel with fries added. The baked mushrooms was a tasty bowl, but didn't go well with the toast. There was too much toast in proportion to the amount of mushroom, meaning you're likely to be left eating plain toast. The bagel was a hearty and tasty portion although very messy to eat. The fries were great except a little unevenly fried - some were crispy while others were under.

Lazy Sunday on my own saw me head back to this little cafe. Been here twice before- the maple butter is outstanding but the chorizo on my partner's big breakfast was undercooked the last time so have been wary of going back.
The ricotta hotcake. I dream of this now. It was so damn good. Caramelised on the outside, soft in the middle- the size of it meant I was lucky to get halfway through, and the price? I think it was around $16, which is really good value. Glad I gave this cafe another shot, looking forward to coming back here for the pancake.

Hawthorn newcomer Short Straw literally appeared out of nowhere. Quietly launched over the Christmas break with little fanfare, it was only a passing glance down a side street off bustling Glenferrie Road that pointed out its existence. Brought by the team behind Tall Timber, Touchwood and Coin Laundry, there is no surprise that Short Straw’s menu is filled with an array of solid dishes (however, no Californian superfood salad here!).

Wow this is quite the funky little cafe, clean bright and has a cool atmosphere. Once seated coffee was offered and food ordered. Very busy on this particular day in part because of 2 larger groups that were here prior to my arrival, the wait staff had their work cut out for them but seem to handle with aplomb. Both coffee and food arrived at exactly the same time and was certainly worth the 20 odd minute wait. I had the corn fritters and smashed avocado with a poached egg and bacon. I'm not sure what spice they use with the bacon but I wanted more it was delightful.
Would throughly recommend this little place, but certainly 1st in best dressed as I'm sure it goes off at the weekend.

So came here early on a Sunday morning & this place already seems to have it's regular customers. It's tucked away from the bustle of Glenferrie road but seems to get people from all directions.

I had looked over the menu beforehand and thought it was well-priced. All our meals were generous portions & delicious. I tried the zucchini fritters as it's a great non-bread option. It wasn't too heavy and had a decent serving of the avocado salsa on the side.

My friends had a baked bean dish with gluten free bread & the other had scrambled eggs with some sides. Each of the meals had a lot to get through, even on an empty stomach. Both of those dishes were well rated.

The waitstaff were friendly & easy-going. Coffee was great too. It's a really relaxed, kid-friendly cafe. A nice addition to the choices around the area.

A worthy addition to the hawthorn brunch scene. The cafe is bright and airy and the staff are accommodating. I ordered the zucchini and corn fritters with avocado salsa, chipotle yoghurt, poached eggs and bacon. I really enjoyed the fritters. They were beautifully light and crispy and had great flavour. My only criticism is that unfortunately the batter wasnt entirely cooked through. The avocado salsa was also a highlight - tangy, chunky and dispersed with capsicum and herbs. The coffee was also superb.

Staff were friendly on arrival and whilst waiting for a table but once seated they disappeared. We had to call them over to order coffee and then food and then even to ask for cutlery. The Vietnamese scrambled I wouldn't recommend- it was a bit of oh hello huge chucks of chilli - where is the scramble! Flavours were not balanced and scramble was overcooked and cold. My friend had the fritters which were amazing and when return will definitely get them! Another friend had the cured salmon that was very thickly cut and would have been better if thinner. Coffee was good and lemon slice (which they don't make on site) was also delicious.

I was lucky enough to be invited along to Short Straw in Hawthorn for my birthday brunch with my favourite gal pals A & R. Short Straw is the baby sister of Tall Timber, Rustica Canteen and Homeslice and boy, did it live up to the expectations I had!. Short Straw is located just off Glenferrie Road in Mary Street with ample seating both inside and outside. Its’ decor very much reminded me of Tall Timber with their large butchers paper hung up on the wall displaying their weekly specials. As comes with the territory in Melbourne, there was many a waiting to be seated (personally, I think this is a pretty good indicator of the reception Short Straw has so far had).

In Mary Street just off the main drag of Glenferrie Road you'll find a new Hawthorn café, Short straw. Opened just before Christmas 2015, Short Straw is an open, light filled space perfect for breakfast or lunch. Short Straw reminds me of a conservatory. There are green hanging plants in all thecorners, a white brick walls and lots of nice windows to let the morning sun in as well as some nice succulents planted around the outside tree.
I've been a couple of times now for breakfast mid-week and both times the food has been pretty good. I had the Vietnamese scrambled eggs with some salmon and apart from the gluten free toast I ordered being under toasted, the flavours worked well and the dish was a really pretty dish to look at. The next visit it was more scrambled eggs,(in my opinion if a cafe can't do great eggs, there's going to be problems with the rest of the cooking), a thick green smoothie with avocado &honey and some very decent coffee. This time the toast was properly cooked!
This is a great addition to the area and trendy Hawthorn is definitely becoming a foodie destination in its self !! With the amount of new places popping up in the suburb you're certainly spoilt for choice.

Service was prompt, with not one, but two different waitresses asking for our coffee orders. The menu is diverse and has something for everyone. I went with their Early Board - a breakfast board with Bircher muesli, smashed avo on pumpkin bread with a poached egg, a side of prosciutto & a glass of fresh OJ. This was a HUGE dish, so definitely recommend for those with an appetite. The Bircher was beautiful & creamy, topped with crunchy granola & fresh berries. There was a very generous amount of avocado which was deliciously creamy and worked perfectly with the saltiness of the prosciutto & egg. Such a great way to start off the weekend!

A new cafe in the heart of Hawthorn an area with an abundance of eating choices! The standard needs to be high or a repeat visit is not warranted, well I can report that there will be a return visit to Short Straw 😊, need to try a couple of other dishes listed on the menu that were not available when we visited! The dishes we did order were all very tasty, the potato gems served with the burger & the Mary st muffin offered a different take on the side of wedges usually offered. The metal plates used are a nice touch and fits well with the feel of the cafe. One negative is the paper under a couple of the dishes while looking very edgy makes the use of a knife and fork hazardous . Once any liquid/juice from the muffin etc moistens the paper you end up with paper pieces on your cutlery ultimately your mouth!
The cafe is quite roomy inside , lots of white walls, high ceiling and loads of natural light. Seating also available outside in Mary st, with some attractive succulent plantings. We all noted that the seating plan inside could do with a little adjustment, there seemed to be a lot of seating for two but not a lot for four or more! There could even be a bench from the door towards back of cafe on the Mary st side near Windows that could seat singles or couples and free floor space for a few bigger tables. The bench that houses the water bottles/glasses could also be used for the cutlery trays removing them from near the coffee machine, thus avoiding the drying of cutlery to be done near the front counter. Would also mean less congestion for staff delivering food from the kitchen to tables and visually better for customers entering cafe. A negative particularly where we were seated was the toilet/toilet door! No one wants to eat and look at a toilet bowl 😟 Having a structural engineer as one diner he pointed out that it is preferable to have two doors between public and toilet bowl or a self closing door or at least a screen dividing cafe from amenities . Smell issues could also be a real negative for tables close by! The staff were all very friendly and of course all new cafes have teething issues, I'm a fan of constructive criticism and hope it is taken as it is intended, merely feedback from an avid cafe frequenter wanting all cafes to succeed 😊. We will return Short Straw!

This newcomer café has come outta nowhere. Absolutely excellent breakfast food. Nice ambience and great service.

Firstly I got a eggs benedict (called a Short straw benedict). This came with poached eggs, ham hock on muffins with a hollandaise sauce and cut up granny smith apples and salad. Absolutely perfect. The eggs were perfect (although they were only just eggs) with nice texture and flavour of the yolk. The ham hock gave that nice salty flavour to compliment the egg, along with the fresh salad to have a fresh taste to the dish. The muffins were cooked perfect. I was very impressed with this meal and will come back to try the other dishes.

Stumbled upon short straw while looking for a place for brunch in Hawthorn. They serve delicious breakfasts and a really nice bloody Mary’s. We tried the halloumi bagel and the vegan scramble and highly recommend both! Staff are great and helpful. Can’t wait to visit again and try more options on the menu

First of the bagel, omg it was good. Reminded me of bagels I had in New York! The chicken was pouched so beautifully and there’s heaps of it too! Everything else wasn’t bad too! Service was good, coffee was good as they use Undercover Roaster from Richmond which I like. Would be back at this place again for sure!

Came here for Mother's day. Really great food, drinks and the staff were lovely and accomodating. Bloody Mary's had a proper spicy kick, awesome. Chicken burgers were crispy, juicy and great. Everything was pretty great. Would recommend.
