📝: Revisited this amazing cafe in Hawthorn after so long. Food and service is still as great as I remember.

❤️: We ordered the Short Straw, Mean Mushrooms, and Poke Bowl. My favorite was the Short Straw—sweetcorn kale and zucchini fritters with pumpkin hummus. The Poké Bowl was also amazing, so fresh and tasty.

My dining companion opted for the poke bowl, loaded to the brim with freshness and plump slices of salmon. The amount of salmon, along with the overall portion size of the dish, is quite generous. Not quite in the mood for anything in particular, I decided to choose the brekkie board (which normally comes with a mini croissant but they had run out on the day of our visit) with an added side of crispy fried halloumi. A great option for anyone after a little bit of this and that, the indecisive or the super hungry, the brekkie board is the way to go, covering all bases with savoury and sweet.

Cosy Cafe and Perfectly Placed!

We enjoyed such a wonderful brunch here at Short Straw.

The interior was perfect for a cosy brunch and to do a bit of work.

We can definitely recommend ordering a side of fries as they were fantastic to enjoy on the side.

Our favourite dish was definitely The Spring Smash. The bread was filled with delicious flavours and seeds. The avo had a fresh taste to it and was really delicious!

The berry smoothie was also a favourite 😍

Thanks Team Short Straw! We will definitely be back 👋🏼

A cute, little place with great coffee and friendly staff. Love the green vibe and natural light inside.
A big plus, they have oat milk as a non-dairy option, which you don't find everywhere.

Short Straw is a typical Melbourne cafe with great coffee and an uncomplicated menu. When you are greeted warmly on arrival and don’t need to squeeze into a tiny table, it’s also an appealing cafe to catch up with a friend! We ordered two coffees, The Short Straw ($20) and the Pork Benny ($20). Coffee arrived with rich coffee smells and some coffee art…winning!

Short Straw is never disappointing!

I loved the new menu! The fritters were divine. The smashed avocado is always on point, with plenty of avo and flavours. Their drinks menu has something for everyone! The PB or green smoothies are my go-to, and are always a winner!

The decor here is also fab! The staff are always welcoming and the place has an overall, really friendly vibe. Highly recommend!

A great Hawthorn cafe that you find yourself always going back to.

I was drawn to this particular cafe by the Eats Club 40% off deal. From the moment I entered this small cafe, I could tell that it was a lively place. All around the cafe, natural light streamed onto an abundance of hanging plants.

Short Straw was quite unlike many other places as it placed a delicious spin on the regular suspects of a cafe menu.

We had the New York Style Chicken Bagel and the Poké Bowl with an add-on of fries. The chicken bagel had a delicious kick with a hint of spice and the poké bowl was decorated with loads of beans, salmon, avocado, seaweed salad and corn. The service was friendly and efficient.

I would definitely consider returning here again. Coming here certainly does not mean you have drawn the short straw!

When I think of our typical Melbourne Café, I think of this: exposed red brick, coffees perfected to the ninth degree, avo on toast and youngesters with beards or tattoos at La Marzocco. In the last decade, Hawthorn has become a suburb beyond reckoning for its café culture. From the early days of Hirte and Toleman’s Liar Liar to the Makin and Delany’s Axil Coffee Roasters, to more recent and super Instagrammable spots like Fika; there are now so many superb ones in this locale, that the most difficult question has become where to choose.

Another great brunch spot in Melbourne was Short Straw. Offering typical brunch and modern Australian dishes, we found their meals fresh and delicious. We had the poke bowl and really enjoyed the chunky salmon pieces and fresh ponzu dressing. We also had the waffles, which we thought could be crispier on the outside but we did love the little treats of macarons, whipped cream, lemon curd and strawberry coulis that came with the waffles. Venue-wise, it was spacious and bright inside with wooden fixtures all over which made for a great bunch ambiance.

Stumbled upon short straw while looking for a place for brunch in Hawthorn. They serve delicious breakfasts and a really nice bloody Mary’s. We tried the halloumi bagel and the vegan scramble and highly recommend both! Staff are great and helpful. Can’t wait to visit again and try more options on the menu

First of the bagel, omg it was good. Reminded me of bagels I had in New York! The chicken was pouched so beautifully and there’s heaps of it too! Everything else wasn’t bad too! Service was good, coffee was good as they use Undercover Roaster from Richmond which I like. Would be back at this place again for sure!

Came here for Mother's day. Really great food, drinks and the staff were lovely and accomodating. Bloody Mary's had a proper spicy kick, awesome. Chicken burgers were crispy, juicy and great. Everything was pretty great. Would recommend.
