Review La Tropezienne - Hawthorn

Hyokyung Moon
Real french bakery with freshly baked macarons and bread. Their chicken & bacon meat pie was delicious.

Wife bought my birthday cake from this store today and upon cutting it we found it was full of mould. Disgusting. See photo below. Imagine if my children had eaten that.

Tried their chicken schnitzel roll. Unfortunately it tasted pretty bland and below average for a bakery roll. All I could taste was the rocket and sauce, of which there was waaay too much. One half of the roll had barely any chicken, which itself was pretty tasteless and a bit dry. Bread was alright at least. My money ($11.50) would have been better spent at Schnitz down the road, where I can get the same thing, but with more ingredients and much better flavour for 40 cents more. Cakes and pastries looked nice and the young girl that served me was friendly, however.

The customer service is really great at this little cafe. However, I went for a lunch with two of my friends and when I got my sausage roll it tasted a bit like dishwashing liquid. I think it's because they had cleaned their plates but clearly not well enough. Besides that, it was a good experience.

Limited vegan and breakfast options. The menu listed on the EatClub App had a number of vegan options but none were available when we got there so I settled for fruit toast. The macaroons were a hit with my vegetarian daughter but her poached eggs arrived overcooked. Staff did offer to cook them again when I pointed it out, but she was too hungry and didn’t want to wait. On the whole the visit wasn’t worth it despite the 20% discount provided by EatClub.

Some of the best almond croissants I've ever had. It has suffered slightly from changing hands and changing chef, but it has done fairly well to maintain standards of most products. I've heard the coffee isn't as good as it once was, but I'm an iced chocolate kind of guy, so dont know for sure.

Lovely cakes with good prices- slightly higher than market rates . But extremely fresh and some very nice choices- I bought the Lime N Pistachio cake for a birthday yesterday and everyone loved it . Parking available at the front .

Best, most freshest macarons I've ever had in Melbourne. The flavour combinations are delectable.

The macarons are delectable! They are by far my favourite macarons in all of Melbourne. Merci. :-D

The flourless chocolate cake for my friends birthday was gone in a flash. So very yummy. Thanks.

Amazing cronuts! Gotta try the caramel ones. Must visit.

This review is for breakfast. Thought i'd go for the "croissant benedict" as patisseries should be the specialty. At $18, it came with 1 slice of ham and some bottled hollandaise glugged over the eggs. It tasted like something was off.. i let management know that it could be the holllandaise or ham and that i wasn't happy with the meal in general. They said it couldn't be off, the hollandaise was just new out of the bottle so that was that. Ended up scraping the hollandaise and half the ham off and having egg croissant, which was similar in quality to the large chain bakeries. Hopefully their other pastries are much better, but i won't be visiting for breakfast again.

Omg, the pistachio croissant was the bomb!!. The contrast of the pastachio filling with the cherry jam worked really well. Lemon meringue was lovely too - the lemon curd was nicely sharp. Coffee was satisfactory, but service was haphazard. Many items were forgotten with 3 reminders for various items. That's the only reason for deduct a point. Otherwise I would highly recommend.

2.5/5

There is a lot to be said about a name. Just because a place calls itself French doesn't make it French.

Today I had coffee and a Croque Monsieur for breakfast at this cafe. The service was ok but very slow given that all that the food just had to be heated up and the cafe was not busy.

My food was served before my coffee. The Croque Monsieur tasted pretty average but my coffee was better.

The pastries in the display cabinet looked like they'd been there for a while and the sausage rolls and the pies were all cold in the display cabinet, and I don’t know how long they’d been there for.

I did buy a Florentine for my partner to t/a and I had a taste and it was sickly sweet! Eek!

Overall it was slow service and average food for me.

Charlie & Co dined as guests at an event, and we were treated to some lovely creamy slices from La Tropezienne. All so beautiful, the white chocolate passionfruit was light and creamy with that lovely zing of citrus which was a nice contrast. The chocolate slices were nice too. We also had a macaron tower which came in the perfect tower packaging (should mention that we "rearranged" the tower for the picture and that didn't work out). Quite an assortment of flavours from your vanilla/cookies & cream classics to blueberry, bubblegum and one of my favourite - rose! The macaron was perfect in every way.

It is a pity that this place does not attract a younger crowd or has a more vibrant atmosphere because the tartlet I had was not only very fresh, light and flavoursome but it has a wonderful flavoursome crumby but firm pastry base. Excellent. Coffee was OK. The staff were lovely.

Service here was lovely however the pies my partner and I had were average. What makes a good pie are a) delicious filling and b)golden flaky pastry. Whilst they pass on a), they failed on b), with the pastry being soft and unappetizing. I think this has a lot to do with the pies being reheated in the microwave.
Frog
Some foods just don’t take well to reheating and croque- monsieur it seems is a prime example. A croque- monsieur should be crisp on the outside and soft and luscious on the inside not dry and tough. Oh well - the search continues.

Update: Jun-18
At a blogger event today we got to try some delicious slices and macarons from La Tropezienne. My favourites were the lemon meringue and the tiramisu style slice. I also tried the salted caramel and the blueberry macaron which I can totally recommend. They have a us a huge selection of macarons to try in a visually stunning tower and there was a huge variety of flavours including bubble gum, Rose, and cookies and cream... plus all those classics.

Original Review: Mar-18
La Tropezienne has been on Glenferrie for an absolute age as I can remember getting pastries and coffee here at least 10 years ago. They have a good range of tarts and pastries, pies and breads and we were like kids looking for the perfect treat to take away. I eventually settled on a raspberry pistachio croissants (twist in the almond croissants) while KD opted for flourless chocolate cake and a florentine. All very tasty but the pistachio raspberry croissant was the star purchase. The hot cross buns looked great but we passed as already had a heap of those at home. There are a small number of tables for inside and a breakfast and lunch menus available. Staff were friendly enough.
Split The Bill
According to a Middle Ages custom, if you eat a mince pie every day from Christmas day until Twelfth Night (6 January) you will have happiness for the whole year – what a wonderful excuse to indulge in these spiced, fruit-filled pies (quote found on google) hehe. We were invited to try the mince pies at La Tropezienne, the melt in your mouth pastry was crumbly with the right amount of fruit mince. Size wise, large enough to take two bites with your English breakfast tea. Will be back to try the quiche and the croissants.
Good Food Good Mood
I was invited to La Tropiezzene today to try the Christmas mince tarts and what a wonderful discovery. Smack bang in the middle of Glenferrie road is a little taste of Paris. All of the cakes, pastries and breads looked absolutely delectable and this will certainly be top of mind next time I need to take some sweet treats to a gathering. Having just come from lunch I opted for takeaway with a serious intention of having to return and sample more of the wares at a later date. I’ve just now eaten a mince pie and I’m not sure I’m going to be able to stop at just one. The tart base is perfectly buttery and the fruity flavoursome filling utterly delicious. A little box of these would be a perfect gift to your host on Christmas Day. And seeings as I’m hosting my family perhaps I’ll have to gift to self

I've previously had their cakes and macarons takeaway at various parties and functions but have never visited the cafe itself. I was very excited when I spotted La Tropezienne while shopping along Glenferrie but left pretty quick after stepping inside. It was sweltering! Didnt fancy the food poisoning risk if the creamy cakes were sitting at 30c. The dark, orange-tiled interior was also doing it no favours. On such a busy shopping strip, I would rather go to another cafe than deal with no air conditioning and not being able to see my food. Spend some money on renovations and it would be so much better.

Had the strawberry danish and creme bun here, both were yummy. The danish was one of the best we have had and was soft with good texture and flavour, the bun had nicely flavoured creme inside. Good spot for a snack or dessert. The service would be more friendly .

Lovely French Patisserie, with friendly staff. Beautiful range of cakes, breads and pastries. Good coffee. Shared the Tiramisu cake with mum. Next time we wouldn't have any trouble having one each. Was so nice and not too sweet.
The breads looked so good so we decided to get the Olive bread and also a lemon curd, marmalade shortbread as takeaway. The bread is lovely toasted 👌 the shortbread served with vanilla ice cream is nice too.
The pastries were really fresh and delicious however the mocha and cappachino was below lukewarm and average. Expected more from a place with great sweets. Clean and friendly place.
Childish Gambino
The coffee here was really great however the chunky steak pie was very gooey and pasty. Definitely not the best place to go for pies. The sandwich selection was good but very limited. A bit pricey for what you get...
OmNom
Grabbed some coffee and croissants to go one Saturday morning after seeing their great reviews and I wasn't disappointed.
The raspberry and pistachio croissant is crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy in the middle. Very delicious!
Excellent coffee and friendly service.
Veneet Bist
Great coffee! Tried the Nutella donut and Brookie (salted caramel flavour)! Both were delicious! Highly recommend the Brookie as these are made by the staff at La Tropezienne 👌🏽

Amazing food - try the Thai Vegetable Curry Pie and Salted Caramel Brownie!

Cute place with plenty of character.

Definitely a great place for a good coffee and some amazing pastries.

I love all the tarts here, a lil' pricey, but quality ingredients. Ordered a Clafoutis as a 'birthday cake'. Awesome! Not too sweet, means I could eat a lot more of it in one night!

This has got to be the hidden treasure of Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. I went online and looked at their products before ordering the Mistral cake for my colleague's birthday. When I went in to collect my order I was fascinated by all the exquisite looking treats on display and promised myself I'd be back to try each one! I was served by a friendly and helpful young man who gave me a rundown description of the cake I was there to collect that made my mouth water. Needless to say the Mistral cake was devoured by my Bayside suburb colleagues the next day. It was truly heavenly and simply delicious. I'm now busy making excuses to go back and buy the next office treat!

Ordered a cake from here for a colleagues birthday, and it was so delicious!!If you want something special, definitely head straight here.
Hello. Imnikki
It will be silly of me not to try the Tropezienne at a cafe called La Tropezienne. A rich buttery brioche filled with luscious cream and dusted with powdered sugar, it's best not to count calories when enjoying a Tropezienne. Paired with a strong skinny latte that helps to cut through all the sweetness, I truly believe that La Tropezienne is worthy of being named after the beautiful pastry. The apple crumble tart was also a winner; sweet and tangy with lots of crumble and buttery shortcut pastry. Very tempted to order more of the pastries to try if not for the fact that my partner was in the right frame of mind to remind me that we just had lunch and he is still very full. Oh well, there's always next time. And thank you to the girl behind the counter who taught me how to pronounce Tropezienne without butchering its pronunciation.

A French style patisserie in the heart of the bustling part of Hawthorn attracting local and neighboring crowds. A touch of vintage and colorful decor- love the baby pink coffee machine! The staff are also kind and friendly!

The variety here includes sweet and savory as well as gluten free options. The coffee is excellent- robust flavors and skillfully brewed.

We sampled the strawberry tarts and eclairs. The tarts had a crumbly soft and dense base (not too sweet) adorned with the miniature glazed strawberries- the flavor combinations of the tarts was beautifully balanced with the slight sweetness of the base and a sweet tanginess of the strawberries that stimulate the tastebuds on the rear side of your tongue! Mmmm.... The eclairs were an addictive treat- the pastry was light, golden and subtly chewy, the fillings have a light and velvety custard consistency with a brush of shiny ganache on the outside. I lost myself with every bite!

The pastries here are of a boutique quality made from fresh and vibrant ingredients!.. I cannot wait to sample the macarons and Danishes! 😘

Value for money: $6.60 for a small piece, freshly baked, quality ingredients 7/10 Overall score: 8/10 . Named after the famous French cake, La Tropezienne in Hawthorn has been on my hit list for some time now. All of their cakes and pastries are beautifully prepared with care and attention, so the decorative quality was extremely high - just like their prices too. I've visited numerous French style patisseries on my search, but this slice had the best of everything, except for portion size and overall value for money.
Gemma
La Tropezienne doesn't really live up to the hype. Their baguette was soft and very dense (not light and crunchy), and the staff were very rude and dismissive. Such a shame as there are not many other bakery options in the area.
Kay Jiang
Heard their coffees aren't that great, but they have the best macarons and croissants in the area 👏🏼 was recommended to me by a well-travelled high school teacher who said they make the best croissants he has ever tasted outside of France

A little taste of French provincial in Hawthorn
We've been going here since it was opened by the original owner, even as it changed hands all our favourites cakes and pastries are still great. Not a fan of their coffees but it's always an enjoyable re-visit.
Hungry Hippo
THEY HAVE THE BEST MACARONS AND CAKES IN HAWTHORN. Maybe the best in the inner east! Try their passion fruit macaron and their delicious cakes. I buy their cakes for birthdays whenever I can and my friends always love them.
Joanna
I've been here on a number or occasions - the food is excellent and the croissants are the best I've had - buttery, fluffy and flaky. The macaroons are not undercooked and taste as their flavour card reads.

The coffee however needs some improvement and staff need to pay a bit more attention/ brush up on their skills. Each time I've placed an order, I've tasted burnt beans which is an absolute shame as it would make this little place a good all rounder.
Flho
The texture was pretty good, they weren't too chewy nor crumbly and had very crisp outer shells, with chewy inside. The flavours were spot on and weren't too sweet. However, they weren't very present in the meringue part, only in the filling and I couldn't really taste the coconut. Overall they were quite decent at $2.40 each.

This is the kind of store when salivation begins immediately on arrival. It is a modest place, no heavy decorations, and not at all pretentious. The staff are lovely and humble (most of the staff are French speaking), and there is just enough seating for a good chat with a friend, or the corner near the window to settle into a book, coffee, and macaron. My preferred macaron is the Martinique – passionfruit with a bite of chilli. A sweet escape from the bustling Glenferrie Rd.
Let Me Feed You
The macarons had lovely feet, all broken and bristly, and the ones I tried (salted caramel, coffee, raspberry) all had crisp outer shells and a pleasant chewiness to the inside. The coffee in particular was brilliant, it's amazing how they can get such a strong flavour into such a delicate thing. I went a bit camera-happy with my Dad's Canon SLR. I had no small amount of fun stacking and rearranging them, so please enjoy a little macaron pornography.

FRENCH DESSERT SERIES: A sweet little nook of France in inner-city Melbourne, recommended for eclairs, la tropezienne bun and some macarons.

Magnifique patisserie for beaucoup money. Great-looking pastry creations in here that would fit right in en France. It's like they're priced in euros, though. I paid $17.70 for three items. Couldn't resist a chocolate PISTACHIO croissant, though. And the raspberry tart looked so good, like it was sitting on top of a Florentine. I wouldn't pop in here every day -- this was just a splurge for patisserie to have with my home-made morning macchiatos for the next few days. I got some big paycheques, so I wanted to treat myself to something good. La Tropezienne is the place for that.

Pre ordered cake!. Ordered a large birthday cake from a very large catalogue of choice.
It was amazing! Fresh, very well presented, custom detail and tasted perfect. Very very happy.
Cathy Zhao
Despite of the 90% rating on Urbanspoon, the cake we ordered which is supposed to have a shortbread base is soft as a sponge, coffee was not bad but pretty average, plus my coffee was served with a tea spoon that still has some previous customer s lip gloss mark on it. I decided not to complain about the spoon but also wont come back in the future.
SJMelbgirl
The Mistral experience. The best birthday cake I've had a in a very long time - dark chocolate mousse and crispy hazelnut praline, with a bit of milk chocolate and a chocolate sponge. The exterior was blasted with chocolate spray and decorated with bronzed dark chocolate shards.

The staff were absolutely superb. I called a couple of days ahead to order, and was assured the small Mistral ($34.00) would be more than enough (stated as feeding 6 people, it will more likely be enough for 8 serves). And when I was running late, I called ahead where the staff told me "don't worry; we'll be here cleaning up and closing until 6.30 so just get here when you can. No rush." Wonderful cake, lovely service, stunning presentation.

Nice. On the Glenferrie Rd strip there are primarily franchises selling pre packaged and pre prepared goods and foods, try one of the cafes their cakes or muffins are the same you'd find elsewhere as they come from the same plant. Not so La Tropezienne, it is a traditional bakery that makes its good daily and the attention and care shines through in an otherwise dreary suburban landscape.

La Tropezienne - Quiches & Petits Fours. Went to this patisserie yesterday and bought two different quiches - tomato & basil and spinach & salmon ($6.50 each) and a box of 12 different petits fours ($24). Quiches were very nice and reasonable price. Petits fours were delicious, some were ordinary but there are few that have excellent taste.

Good place for a treat. Love Hazelnut one, lovely
Mandy Ren
Delicious macaron. Hazelnut macaron can rival that of Lindt cafe and luxbite, but falls short of specialty stores such as la belle miette

Flawless. This little local French bakery never fails me. A quick takeaway coffee in the morning, weekly treats for my children, crusty breads to have with home made soup and cheese or the ever important celebration cake. La Tropezienne NEVER fails!! Whenever I have served their food at home, guests are always complimentary. Everything we eat from this bakery, every time is just divine. Yolanda D. - Hawthorn.

This is a nice place to hang out with friendly staff and great service...however whilst both the coffee and the chocolate Maya desert were decent, the Maya was grossly over priced. To pay $7 for that size portion, one would expect something beyond heavenly - it wasn't. Shame because its a place I would have liked to have turned into one of my "regulars"...
Mtpr
French delight. Will definitely be going back. It was the only place that was open for coffee at 4pm on a saturday on Glenferrie Road. Pistachio and Rosewater meringue was delicious, as was my espresso.
Pinesquirrel
Did not enjoy the teacake ($11; dry and unexceptional in taste) or macaroons ($2.30 ea; a little too dense). The little square of Maya chocolate cake was nice but not worth the $7.20 price tag.
S And D
The little cafe takes me back to Paris. The desserts are amazing and I will definately be going back. My only complaint is that it's fairly expensive for the size of the sweet, so probably good for a special occasion. I can't see myself spending over $7 for a tiny slice on a regular basis, but I will definately be going back for an occasional treat!
Me
A real french patisserie!. Macarons are to die for, as are the baguettes and pastries. i really like how all the staff are french too... it's a great place to come, practice your french, and treat yourself to an afternoon treat.

Macaron tower. Check out the massive macaron tower display!! And the macarons are seriously good here...especially the "special" flavoured macarons

Chai Time. La Tropezienne is a great little place to people watch. I had the salt caramel macaron, which could have been a little more salty, but the texture of it was perfect - Crunchy and chewy, with a nice sticky/chewy caramel filling. My sister had a beautiful passionfruit cake which had the right balance of tang and sweetness. My chai tea was the star. It was brewed with proper loose chai tea in a teapot, and was nice an spicy - not of that rubbish sickly sweet 'chai' syrup. I came served on a little tray with a small side of honey to sweeten. Bliss!
Strawberrygirl
Things I had today:. -Rosewater macaroon: Nice texture, fluffy yet chewy. Filling is nicely scented with rosewater but is not too overpowering
-Chocolate croissant: Has not achieved enough layers throughout the croissant. Looks reasonably voluminous externally, but is in fact an empty tunnel inside. The chocolate inside was passable.
-Mini brioche sandwich: Nothing special. The brioche doesn't taste as sweet or fluffy as the normal brioche. Filling is just brie, eggplant and lettuce.
-Onion tarte: The filling is quite nice, moderately caramelised onions and cherry tomatoes. The puff pastry is a bit soft and flabby. Better texture could have been achieved with better re-heating of the tart.

The cakes are beautiful, great for birthdays
The Hungry Badger
Macarons of win!. Great selection of tasty macarons that disappear a little too quickly. The selections of tarts, cakes and bread look pretty good too. Busy little spot...we'll be back.
Sarah Dee
Best macaroons! Not sure what other reviews are about, but they taste exactly like the ones in Paris! Smooth, but crisp shell! Sweet and delicious! If u want a sweet treat this is Ur place!
Thurazin
A fantastic place!. We've been to this place on a number of occasions now, and their simple menu continues to impress. For the indulgent customer, I'd suggest the croque monsieur - the brioche makes this version a winner.
Their sweets are excellent as well (the chocolate and pistachio croissant is sublime), and the efficient, polite service makes each visit pleasurable.

Croissants are small and over priced. Not much competition nearby though.

Undecided for now. Despite looking wonderfully round and colourful in the display, the macarons were a disappointment, texture was too chewy and was overdry, nor did the filling compensate for this. I think recent craze has led to a million places now trying to offer them, but with little quality control... sigh sigh.

Coffee was decent.
Have to come back to try their breads + pastries though - too bad i already had lunch just before =(

Tres Bon. I can recommend the croissants (plain and all other varieties) and the escargot. Unfortunately they charge extra to eat in.
Eat.Play.Shop.
A small, easy to miss little shop, full of baked goodness from bread and pies, to cakes and macarons. Of course we were here to try out the macarons.
Moving
La Tropezienne, you have leapfrogged Cacao as my number 1 macaron destination in Melbourne. Now, all I need is for you to bring out a (new and improved) salty caramel version…

I LOVE this bakery's croissants, breads, macarons... everything french. To me, La Tropezienne - or as my husband and I call it, 'the frenchie' - is the best french bakery around. I simply love waking up early in a cold Sunday morning in winter to buy thei
