Review The Hawthorn Hotel - Hawthorn

Cheong K
We came here for dinner with our family on a Saturday night. Booking was done on-line so it was pretty easy. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. The music can be a bit loud if you are sitting in front of the guitarist. If you want to talk, probably better to sit in another part of the restaurant. Plenty of choices for beers on tap. Food choices are limited but the serving size is not bad (see pictures). The taste is so so although I did like the risotto.

I can’t rave about The Hawthorn Hotels Sunday lunch enough! This was 💯 one of the best we’ve had! From juicy lamb, crispy Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy to the most incredible plate of veg… roast potato, sweet potato, parsnips, carrot, broc, cauli, beans, peas, pumpkin… I mean! Absolute perfection.

Food ✔ $27.00 bottomless roast vegetables with tough meat ... pudding was good though Wine ✔✔✔ standard Australian Venue Co Venue ✔️ not to come when UFC is on, it's loud and don't worry about your Sunday's Roast Service ✔✔✔✔ somewhat good, despite the kitchen is serving bad food. Would we go back? Maybe ...

Hawthorn Hotel has recently undergone renovations and all for the better. The place is stunning with beautiful inside and outside dining options. Plenty of space for just drinking, beautiful bar, undercover areas outside with plenty of tv screens to watch your fav sports without being in your face. Service is good and friendly. Menu here is typical pub food, but it's not great. It's definitely serviceable if you've had a few drinks, but you wouldn't go out of your way to go here just for a meal. This pub has plenty of potential to be 5 stars, but just the food let's it down, it doesn't taste fresh or prepared with thought or care. Definitely worth a look and go catch up with friends for a drink, but plan your food elsewhere.

Good atmosphere, service and a fun quiz night but the vegetarian food selection was pretty average. Ordered a $27 eggplant parma and was pretty disappointed with the portion size which was about 1/3rd of the size of the chicken parma that everyone else on my table got. Honesty it wasn't very filling and if this was the standard size, it should have been half this price. Most of the plate was literally chips

What a great place! I was surprised by the fantastic beer selection and amazing food. Will definitely be back to try more. Also prices are very reasonable and staff are lovely

Thou the chips taste unique and burger is something I'm not used to, it's still an amazing place to hang out or meet with peps and watch footy, I recomand this place, mainly for you to meet and hang out

We went for the lunch special today during lunch time at the Hawthorn Hotel....heard this place is under the same management as The Smith....The lunch specials offer a very good value, I had a Chicken Parma and My partner had a Chicken burger...the food was spectacular and feels like really good value...the chips were deep fried perfectly....pretty much nothing to fault....really enjoyed the food....the QR code ordering system at the table is also fantastic....

I’d have given it no stars if I could. Waited 45 minutes for two Parma’s. First came out like warm, second came out 20 minutes later and the cheese had already reset. No apology for the wait when the second arrived at the table. When you’re paying $21 for some deep fried chicken and chips surely you’ve got to question the level of intellect of your staff... The place was a joke

Customer service from the young lady behind the bar this afternoon was awesome. It was refreshing to have a bartender who genuinely cares about a customer’s experience. $10 espressos were on point too

Solid place that has a great bar staff, can't recommend higher.

I have loved The Hawthorn for so long but since changing hands it's keeps going down hill bit by bit - mainly with meals and value. The happy hour has schooners instead of pints now and there are way less choices than there used to be. The meals have always been a solid choice with a cheeky happy hour drink next to them. But my burger tonight came with a brioche bun that was burnt - it's meant to be a soft light bun, not a black burnt one. You could count the amount of chips at a glance, it was so minuscule, and even though you barely got any chips they still didn't provide enough dipping sauce to get through them, with a glorified singular drop of sauce. It was so disappointing and pathetically facetious considering the price tag. I expect a $17 burger to be made properly, not burnt and for them to not skimp on little things like chips and dip. It was as if each chip cost them $1. Customers notice when you pay a high price and get average food. Had the burger cost $11 it wouldn't have even crossed my mind to complain. The service was still great, the staff continue to be friendly and helpful. I'm just actually really sad that I don't want to go back here as it was so good once.

Hi u guys have really good burgers I love them can I have free burger every Thursday

Very nice place good for students life. Tuesday nights great for cheap drinks.

I was there for a private function last night, it was my first time there. Won’t be in a hurry to go back. Bar service very slow, stifling hot lack of adequate air conditioning and lastly food started to come out close to ten pm. If I was hosting a function there I wouldn’t have been happy.

One of the best uni nights melbourne has to offer. Cheap drinks and free entry, what a combo!

On Tuesday night my friends and I were partaking in a couple of bevvies and a dance when we decided to go outside upstairs to get some air. My friend sat down on one of the benches upstairs and there was a chair in the way so I moved it so I could sit next to her. Next minute one of your security guards came up to me and started to yell at me telling me to put my drink down and leave. I was stunned and didn't understand why. I protested and asked what for, when he started to yell even louder telling me to get out and then looked at my friends and told them they had to leave too... We all stood there in shock trying to work out what we did to be kicked out. We all then started to protest asking why we were abruptly being asked to leave. He then turned around and told us the chair had to stay there because half of the upstairs outside was closed off... if he had calmly mentioned to me that that is why the chair was there and if I could of just left it there, I wouldn't be here leaving this review. But because he turned around and started yelling at me and my friends for moving a chair, I couldn't sit back and not say anything. This is not right and the way the security guard went about this situation was completely wrong! Definitely put a downer on the rest of the night. Not happy Jan.

Phoned and confirmed booking. Turned up 30 mins later. Knew nothing about the booking - had no tables left - they were running a trivia night. Started setting up a plastic trestle table in another room for us. Left. Only giving 1 start because I can't give zero.

Great pub. Awesome beer Garden. Top atmosphere 2 watch the AFL Grand Final.
Madison Harrison-Brown
shit service and shit food. not even a stoner with munchies would enjoy it. I tried two pizzas both burnt and tasted stale. my friend had a Parma and they seemed to think cheese was a garnish...
Julia M Pendyk
Always have a great time here, recently visited and was really impressed! Food and service was amazing.

Lost a star because they skipped Swish Swish during the Nicki part

Awesome Parmas! Friendly service. Keep up the good work!

Used paywave to buy a few drinks with my credit card, since then the chip hasn't been working.... but otherwise great place for a few drinks and a dance!
Jem Ryan
If I could rate this place a 0, I would. The staff here are obviously unhappy to work here and their bitterness is demonstrated in the way they treat their guests. Horrible experience.
Georgia
Nice vibe & atmosphere but almost no vegan options. Not great when you want to chill with your mates after class. Hoping they get a burger or an eggplant parma for at least a couple options.
JB
Grab your Balabushka and go old school at ‘The Thorn’. Classic Melbourne pub with nothing pretentious or unnecessary on the menu. Grab a Parma, Burger or Pizza, spill a few beers and wobble out! Food is good, and simple in the right way.
Isobel Barrand
I went to trivia tonight (as I do most weeks) and someone ordered fish and chips that had so obviously gone bad that the entire venue smelled like socks which hadn’t been changed in more than a year. I get that you guys aren’t a fine dining restaurant, but to serve someone rancid fish and for your bar staff to shrug it of as “Yeah, so what?” when brought to their attention is next level disgusting. If the person who ordered the meal doesn’t get sick I’ll be incredibly surprised.
Thats My Food
I used to go to this place every other day for a game of pool and a good meal. Yesterday I was hanging out with my 13 year old cousin and he wanted to eat a good Chicken Parma and this place was the first one that came to my mind. <br/><br/>It is an amazing place, especially for  students as they have a bunch of games, pool, and they have interesting stuff going on during the week. Plus they have really good offers on food everyday.<br/><br/>They have different sections in a huge area, One section is with the couches and tables and chairs which give a restaurant kind of feel and then there is pool section and then there is outdoor seating which is just beautiful. I think they have renovated the area and have made it perfect.<br/><br/>Now the food. I have always enjoyed what ever I have ordered here. The CHIPS are one of the best. They are thick juicy, and have an amazing seasoning which puts their chips on top of the ladder. The chicken Parma was fresh, I felt the chicken was a bit overcooked but was still amazing. Carbonara parma was fabulous. The garlic cream on top made it significantly better than the others. Because it was a monday so the Parma was $14 which is crazyy. You cant get more value for your money anywhere else on a monday.. :P

Great for a cheap and easy Parma for uni students or those wanting a cheap and cheerful meal. Nothing special but certainly no complaints. Service swings in roundabouts, can be poor at times.
Alex Bogart-King
Came here for a boozy brunch. It was top quality even comparing to their counter parts in South Yarra. Overall, you wont regret coming here, everything is good quality and value for money. Will come back<br/><br/>
Good Food Good Mood
I’ve been to this pub on several occasions to have a drink and a dance and to listen to some live music. This was the first occasion I’d eaten here and I actually quite enjoyed the bistro style food, opting for a classic parma which was rather sizeable. The atmosphere was a little rowdy being that the crowd was predominantly made up of uni students but it was nice to see everyone having a good time. Would definitely recommend for a casual affordable meal
Sushi_Monster
An ideal hangout place. Loved the food and the atmosphere. The parma was filling and was on a special offer for $14. Loved the good energy of the staff. Overall an amazing place to hangout and chill with friends.
Wintice
The chips were lovely!! Crispy with lovely herbs and spices, couldn't get enough! The steak was so-so and I didn't enjoy the salad that it came with though, was way too sour with too much vinegar.
Paris Henry
I come here for the $5 pizzas and $5 fireball shots on Tuesday after uni and it’s the perfect wind down from school work before the windup of a sesh when Tightarse Tuesday starts and the RnB beats hit. I love Hawka and will recommend it to anyone!
Jalena
Fantastic sized and tasting parmas. Chill upstairs beer garden perfect spot for your mates with cheap drink/food specials everyday. <br/>Staff are also approachable and kind! Great location next to uni and a short walk from Glenferrie station.
Rachael
Ordered a basic hamburger and fries, and my friend a bowl of wedges. The wedges at the price of $9.5 was extremely underwhelming in both mass and substance. The burger itself suffered from a severe case of diminutive patty syndrome and also lacked flavour. The particularly unfortunate poor qualities of being both dry and unappetising. The side of chips continued the disappointment, despite being crisp, the chef decided to season with an unusual mix of spices in addition to an excessive quantity of salt. The small ramekin of mayonnaise provided could not excuse such a series of disappointments. The service was slow for despite the proportionally small turn out. For what was a $20 dollar meal, I was let down.
Sylvia's POV
Great place to catch up and chill. Indoor and outdoor seating. Come on Tuesday nights for cheap drinks, but get in early. Food on special will come in small portions.
Kirby May
Great food and friendly pub atmosphere. Also fantastic for a quiet meal with friends or a night out. They often have specials throughout the week that are great for uni students.
Jayde Karla Smith
I'm very impressed, service was impeccable and the parmi itself very moist and tasty! <br/>The chips were nice and crunchy and salad nice too! <br/>We made an impulse decision to come watch the footy and we weren't disappointed with our decision, although the pricing is dear it's definitely worth the money, I definitely recommend!
Isobel
Higher prices, smaller portions but venue still looks like your typical RSL. May as well just go to Nevermind which costs the same but has better music and overall vibe.
Timinmelbourne
I went here last night with by friend. We both tried the $14 rump steak with chips and salad. It was quite good for pub food. <br/><br/>The staff were friendly and patrons were a mix of retirees, tradies and uni students. Quite an electic group haha<br/><br/>Overall it was a good night.

The hawthorn has been my go to pub for quite a while now. Sports coverage is up and above everyone else and there beer garden is absolutely amazing! <br/>Beautiful place to sit in the sun and have a few glasses of wine. Their food also is nothing short of amazing, from Parma to steak sandwich or burger and even their pastas and rissottos are all perfect 👌<br/>Drink specials are another plus because there is not a shortage. Their attention to detail everywhere is second to none. <br/>I will keep this place my regular for sure.
BRAVEHEART
Hawthorn hotel is the best pub around. <br/>They have nice foods and Good staff <br/>Tuesday nights is too busy. <br/>I dont wanna be there tuesday nights. <br/>Chicken parma and Burger is best. <br/>Happy hour 4-6
Chupachup
A group of us came on parma night to take advantage of the $13 parma. Better than expected never going to be the worlds best parma for $13 but it's excellent value for money.
LTC86
Possibly one of the worst places to eat in Hawthorn. Went here for a team lunch recently and what a waste of space and effort - the schnitzel burger I ordered had 1 slice of tomato, half a piece of iceberg lettuce and a piece of processed chicken with mayonnaise that looked like it came out of a glue bottle. We work in the area and have given this place so many chances but definitely will not be going back again.
VegoWolf
Ordered a pizza, took at least 45 minutes to come out. Everyone else at the table got their food earlier (still a decent wait) and there was no acknowledgement or apology for mine taking much longer. Pizza wasn't even that good.
TINA JOHNSON
If you are able to go there on the night of which they have the specials ( such as $13 parmas) then it is really good value for money. However, food is nothing special, and is what you could expect to find in most pubs around melbourne.
Yuiisama
No complaints from me, sometimes the food comes out a little slow - especially on Wednesday lunch days and you're in a hurry to go to class or back to work. Overall a really decent place to have a drink during happy hour and the staff are friendly enough. <br/>Tip: order some wedges or fries and some beer during 4-6pm and you have yourself a good afternoon :)
FancyCake
Not a bad pub. If you go when it's not a Tuesday night, this is actually a really nice local with a lovely "backyard" deck and courtyard. Their different drink specials ($6 happy hour every day 4-6) and cheap meal deals ($13 Parma Mondays) can keep you on your budget almost the whole week. Parma is pretty standard pub fare, but I've seen the kitchen try to branch out a bit with the Veal Schnitzel and Nasi Goreng. Both good for the price. Staff are usually pretty nice and will have a quick chat about the specials on. There are a couple different sections to the pub which makes it cozy. Pool tables in a separate area and some game machines too. Would like a couple more beers on tap and in bottles. White Rabbit is doesn't count so much as a craft beer these days. Will be back... it's the closest pub around!
Klod
How can I put this in words, a good place to have a drink with friends if you don't want any food... Not only the food was substandard but also the service... They don't make feel welcome at all and charge top dollars... Come on guys, if you want to charge top dollars, I don't mind but at least provide the service that goes with... Don't think will go back again...
Draps
A great place to go and have a couple of drinks with friends. If you order food you are going to be in for quite a wait. The Parma is great and the chips are delicious. But I suggest ordering as soon as you get there or just go there for a couple of drinks.
Epicurious
This is one of my fave hangouts in hawthorn and especially on a Tuesday & Wednesday night. The tuesday specials are $6 pizzas out of which my all time favourite remains the mexican with con carne (highly recommended). Great music, chirpy crowd and cordial staff is how it adds up to me. Plus the pool table is an add on with a pint of chilled corona. Icing on the cake is the free pool on Wednesday nights. <br/>Love the outdoor seating with a combination of red, greens and white.
Parma Daze
For $21 I was happy with what I got, if you check in when you arrive at The Hawthorn on a Thursday you get a free pot, which is a nice little touch and definitely appealing to the student crowd. If the parma maintains the same quality as it does tonight as it does on their Tuesday & Saturday “$13 pot and parma nights” then I would say it’s one of the best value parma n’ pot deals we have found so far.
Eddie
Apparently Tuesday is the night is The Hawthorn’s night. Uni night where it’s packed. But those times are well past me now.

Waited ages around 30 minutes before girls.. Waited ages for 30 minutes before girls. They the girls ordered before me. Thats so racist i rekon. C'mon. I am indian. Nad service.

Hawthorn Hotel Disgust. The security this pub has is a joke. Extremely rude and up themselves. And I reluctantly call this place a 'pub' given the fact that they were closed christmas eve. And arriving at 7pm they ask for ID???? There are kids with there parents in there! <br/>Horrible food, expensive prices and rude staff. That's if your food even arrives at all. Won't be going back any time soon
Fraggleout
Sunday sess!. Great place for a Sunday session. Relaxed atmosphere, can definitely recommend it if you like a good beer garden on a spring day!
Kevin Mcmahon
Food just average. Just finished dinner was just ok.Dips were from supermarket and suspect the chicken might have been frozen but everything edible. Drinks very alarming ordered golden ale tasted like Carlton draught. Had a reasonable list of wines by the glass but only 2 reds available. Staff very pleasant and good but we won't be coming back .

Best Parma in Melbourne. I challenge anyone to find me a better Parma in Melbourne, especially at $13 on a Monday night.<br/>Highly recommended.
Tristan Storey
Fairly disappointing lunch. Advertises "pot and Palma" for $13. Came out with no ham on the Palma, and no salad next to it. Pretty much just chicken and chips. Felt like I needed cholesterol medicine afterwards. First table was sticky to touch and also wonky, with half of the foot broken off one of the legs. Lucky I didn't order soup and burn myself. Carpet was sticky like a kings cross club. 0.5/10

Nothing Special... I've dined here a couple times, and nothing really stands out.<br/>Just another ordinary pub. The food is average, but you can get some really good deals on certain nights, especially with the Hawthorn Hotel App if you are a regular. I felt like the staff were a bit tired and over it, and it was full of rowdy uni students. This place does have a cute beer garden, and is nice for a couple drinks with friends after work or uni.
Peter Fein
Came here with my E book voucher for 25% discount. Ordered the 300g Rump which came with generous chips & salad. Overall I give it 8/10 considering its a pub bistro
Nina
Parmi cravings. I believe The Hawthorn Hotel serves up one of my favourite parma's in Melbourne. Great big juicy unprocessed schnitzel, quality toppings, perfect chips and a passable salad.
Richardnole
Ordinary meal. I went there on Friday night with a couple of mates and tried one of the burgers. To be honest the burger wasn't tasting the freshest, I almost went and said something to the staff but just wont be eating there again.
Tommitchell
Shocking Place. I went there on Saturday with my family and had main meals and was very disapointed with the taste, freshness and the service wasn't the best. Unfortunately we live locally and we wont be back.
Wayman22
What a great place! The haw.... What a great place!<br/>The hawthorn hotel has everything you could ask for, great beer gardens, live sport always showing, live entertainment more often than not, great drink specials every day and the food is delicious at a fair price, I've been to the hawthorn a couple of times a week for the past 6 months and have yet to find a bad point about it, staff are always friendly and helpful serving you with a smile every time, I would highly recommend the hawthorn to every one of all ages you will thouroughly enjoy your visit! <br/><br/>Ps. Try there delicious deserts
Robbie_Em
Rubbish joint, only worth going to to make use of parma and pot deal.
Kerrin Auld
I went there on Tuesday night for dinner an was very disappointed I ordered my pizzas chips an nachos the pizzas where horrible had hardly any toppings an were what I'd call hot the chips where soggy an cold and my nachos was flavourless on a hole very disappointed

Got to be the biggest, the best not to mention reasonably priced Parma I had. Definetly Recommend.

Thursday night! Value for money! Parma, comedy and beers!

Very Slow & Expensive. My first negtive post which I thought I'd have to post because this place always drives me crazy. Everytime someone from work organises a farewell party it seems like we end up going here because it's like the only place that can cater for 20 plus people. Anyways, it takes a bit of time ordering, then takes forever to receive your food. Food is SO expensive for a pub and I rate the food as Poor to Average.
L
Have the Duck. Went to the hawthorn last night and had the duck risotto. The food was fresh and really impressed considering it was a pub meal. i highly suggest people go there, im gonna come back for the duck for sure!
Mmmcupcake
RIP OFF!. Food was very average - stale bread, soggy calamari, pizza with hardly any topping! Plus $4.20 for a POT of LEMONADE...... need I say more?!
Jess
Food ok.... Recently move back in to the area and its been a long time since ive been here. Maybe ive got to old or maybe the patrons are a different type now just has a funny feel to the venue. Food was ok...had the chicken burger. will try again another day but wont rush back
Happy To Help
Hmmm. The hawthorn is great for a night out drinking, it's so packed on Tuesday nights there's a line about 100 metres down the street. The food on the other hand I thought was pricey considering the food was nothing special, just pub food.
Roryj
The Hawthorn Hotel. $13 parma and pot twice a week on tuesdays and thursday worth every penny, also had my 21st there a while ago the staff we're awesome, the food was great and a friend of mine even got the number of one of the bartenders
Joel
Dinner with mates. I went to the Hawthorn for dinner last night with a couple of mates and loved it. We rocked up at about 7 and discovered that it was buy one meal get one free. Awesome savings, but we ended up just spending the money on booze anyway lol.<br/>I'll definitely be coming back for another Parma, and I hear it's free pool on Wednesdays so going to make use of that too.

I called and made a booking last year for my friend birthday dinner. They didn't mention we need to bring age Id to get in and some of my friends didnt have driving license yet. So we end up rejected for enter. Honestly I was pissed, at least they should mention while I made a booking

Are you thinking about having a function at the hawthorn Hotel? please read this first...?. I am not a person to complain but i have a few things to share with you if you are thinking of putting on a function for a special occasion at the hawthorn hotel.....We recently had a function at the hawthorn hotel in burwood rd. I must say the food was great and everyone commented on how nice the food was, however they did stuff our order up!! The night was very nice and the function staff did a lovely job in decorating the room etc....but i would never ever have another function at the hawthorn hotel again. i found the staff on the night to be very unprofessional. For example one staff member who was a function coordinator was acting as security wearing casual clothes when he was not even a security gaurd. This staff memeber accused some of my geusts for stealing drinks when we actually had a tab on the bar where drinks were free for all my geusts for the entire night!! This staff member became aggressive to my geusts and the bouncers were absolutley disgusting and told me to F....K off at one stage. They were very unprofessional and agressive and there was absolutley no need for this. i am so angry. Also the toilets are absolutley DISGUSTING. every single person commented on how disgusting the toilets were. it was an absolute embarassment. They were the worst toilets i have ever seen in my life and i cant believe that a big function place/hotel like the hawthorn have toilets in that state. there was not one toilet that was appropriate to use. absolutley revolting!!! I complained to the manager and got a response back saying that everyone complains about the toilet.....well do something about the state of them. the staff were unfriendly and unprofessional and i will never ever ever go back.

For lunch the Hawthorn is a decent Place that in the least serves up a tasty parma. They also have 5 dollar pizzas which althought can be skimpy on the topping, it's nethertheless fairly good value. At night the place can be a bit seedy and I can't vouch for the dinner menu.
