Review Chaplain's Office - Hawthorn

Amazed this place isn't more busy! We had a fantastic brunch here. Chaplains office is in a beautiful building right within church grounds. The staff were friendly, the service was quick. The menu has great variety. I had probably the best golden latte I've had in Melbourne and the ricotta hotcakes were beautifully presented and tasty. All of us left feeling very satisfied. Will be back!

The chilli scramble eggs was delicious. The flavour of the chilli was great.

A personal favourite! This place always delivers. Delicious food and coffee, but the warmth and service sets this place apart

Excellent coffee, excellent hot chocolate, friendly customer service. It is a beautiful venue, sat quietly looking at the blossom on the trees. Definitely worth visiting in pleasant weather, sitting outside under the trees. Delicious chocolate brownie, oat porridge with honeycomb, and sour dough toast with jam.

Such a lovely cafe with simple interiors, it is also lovely to sit out in the court yard or listen to the church choir rehearsing. The food is exquisite and a nice variety. I also had my favourite Beetroot Latte!!! St Columbs is also wheelchair appropriate. I would highly recommend this cafe to anyway interested in wonderful food and those who are social ethically minded

Beautiful atmosphere. High ceilings. Lovely staff. Very good sourdough. Perfectly poached eggs. Unfortunately though, terrible coffee. I have never tasted a cafe latte THAT milky in a melbourne cafe before, ever.

Really lovely cafe in Hawthorn. Has quite a European vibe with the setting in an old church and the outdoor seating in the courtyard. If you enter up the tree lined pathway you almost forget you're even in the city. Food is great and not too expensive.

Very much an undiscovered gem. Tucked away off Burwood Rd, I could speak more highly of the Chaplain’s Office. The coffee is 5 senses which isn’t one of my favourites but I was very pleasantly surprised with my Flat White. I had the mushroom & eggs with potato hash which was also outstanding. 9.5/10 (about as high as I can score anything)

Our first time here today. We had the pick of spots to sit as it wasn’t busy. Service was prompt & polite. It’s very cosy inside. On a super cold day it would be delicious with the heater roaring. We started with a chai latte & decaf latte, both on Milk Lab almond milk. The chai was great but alas the decaf latte was sour & had split - something I’ve not ever experienced with Milk Lab. It wasn’t drinkable unfortunately. The food on the other hand was really lovely. We enjoyed the trout omelette & the corn fritters, adding the thyme hash as side to both. Could not fault the meals. Fritters often run the risk of being a very dry dish - but this was balanced well with the romesco sauce, a poached egg & avocado. Would definitely return based on food alone. Hoping next time they can turn it around in the coffee department.

Real rating 4.3 ⭐️

We had visited Chaplains Office on a lovely summer day and here’s a recollection of the experience we had!

Coconut yoghurt breakfast bowl - mango purée, pistachio granola and fresh fruits! This was actually better than I expected (mainly because I’m after heavy meals)! The sweetness of the granola and mango purée went really well with the sourness of the yoghurt and the freshness of the fruits! It was like having a yummy cereal but in this form!

Sambal pork belly & fried egg - twice cooked pork belly with chili and coconut, shallot and kaffir lime sambal, fried egg and spring Asian greens! Now this was quite an interesting dish as I have never seen anything quite like it before! The pork belly was tender and juicy and the sambal added that extra special kick and spiciness to this! The fried egg and Asian greens were good sides that complemented the pork belly!

Peach Melba hotcakes - ricotta and raspberry hotcakes, peach, fresh raspberry, vanilla mascarpone and caramelized white chocolate! Not only did this look pretty but it tasted absolutely exceptional and here’s why! The hotcakes were thick, soft and fluffy! I took a while with the pictures but it was still moist and fluffy (it did not dry out)! The hotcakes were not overly sweet and the elements all worked out so well that made me devour it quickly! For this reasons, it was my fave for the day!

We had a wonderful time at Chaplains Office and would love to visit again for the hotcakes and their other dishes! 😁

Delicious eggs, fantastic potato hash. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Great little space and off the main road so not as busy. Friendly staff which is always a bonus

4.5 Located in an old, you-guessed-it, Chaplain’s Office, it’s easy to enjoy the spacious high ceilings of the light filled interior, or the large courtyard of this quirky, Hawthorn cafe. Time it right and you’ll even hear church organs or the choir too!.
The Fo0die
Fo0die dined as a guest of Chaplain’s Office and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.

Located not too far from Glenferrie train station and near Swinburne University, the venue has been opened since early July 2017 and operates out of, what use to be, an old office behind St. Columbs Anglican Church.

Great quality service by the team and the food is the best in the area, not to mention the coffee is great! Would highly recommend for anyone booking events or just catching up with friends.

4.5

We came into Chaplains Office the other day and although it was hard to find, once we were inside we loved it- it felt very wholesome

The food is a mix of Asian influence with fresh produced to produce a really enjoyable brunch menu, we tried the chilli scrambled eggs and the smoked kingfish.

The chilli scrambled eggs were really creamy and good flavours, we loved the Asian twist on this dish- I wish there was more of a chilli kick

The smoked kingfish was one of the more unique brunch menu items I have tried as other cafes usually do smoked salmon. The kingfish was delicate and on top of the crunchy sweet potato combined with the seaweed and smoky tea egg it was a winning dish ! Highly recommend this dish if your looking to try something different

Thanks for having us

I found this cafe via Instagram and have been here a few times already. I love their coffee, beans by 5 sense, I love their home made peanut butter cookie and the hot cakes! It's such a cozy and relaxed cafe. The staff are friendly and I love that you can sit on the grass under the trees with your coffee, such a fab cafe!

Have you ever had brunch in a church? Because Chaplain’s Office, just like it says in its name, is just that! A cosy brunch cafe in a brick-lined hut nestled near a church just near Glenferrie Road. And the result? A delicious and innovative brunch menu that just proves to you every time that Melbourne cafes have the ability to surprise and delight.

I visited Chaplain’s Office in Hawthorn with a friend last week and was delighted to find such a quaint café so close to my house. I had been eying off a few of their menu items on Instagram and couldn’t wait to try them myself.

The café is hidden on a side street off Burwood Road, and has a lovely, rustic feel inside. There are tables outside in the courtyard and ample seating inside. The staff were warm and attentive and very understanding of the toddler at our table, who was keen to paint the table with our food.

We ordered a coffee and a chai latte to start and both were beautiful. The chai had a lovely cinnamon smell and came in a mug, while the coffee was nice and strong (just the way I like it). I ordered the chilli scramble and my friend ordered the corn fritters to share with her daughter.

Hands down, the chilli scramble was the best that I’ve had in Melbourne this year. The combination of egg, cheese, spring onion and chilli was perfect and the streaky bacon strips were delicious and crunchy. I thought that the addition of bean sprouts was an odd choice, but it actually worked perfectly and I will be adding them to my scrambled eggs at home from now on! This dish was perfect in every way and I highly recommend that you try it when you visit.

My friend demolished the corn, feta and coriander fritters. It came with a generous serve of chorizo, avocado, pickled guindilla peppers and a poached egg. She said that the fritters were crunchy and loved that there were three little fritters instead of huge ones – it made the flavour stronger and made it easier to share

I loved our visit to Chaplain’s Office and look forward to returning so I can try the panna cotta and the hot cakes! Thanks for having us, team ☺
The High Tea Girl
The only thing I’m disappointed about is the fact that I didn’t know about this fabulous cafe sooner!

It’s quirky, unique and cosy. I knew I was onto a good thing when they served my favourite tea (TWG). This tea is not served in many cafes in Melbourne.

I tried two gorgeous meals. The Pannacotta and the Peach Melba Hotcakes. I’m just not sure which one I preferred! There were so many elements in the coconut Pannacotta, fresh fruit and the honeycomb & peanut butter complimented the dish perfectly. Other than looking like a work of art -The Peach Melba Hotcakes were fluffy and delicious and peaches went down a treat.

To top it all off the staff were exceptional, making every diners experience a special one!

Thank you Chaplains Office :)

So impressed with brunch at Chaplains Office this morning. Quaint little cafe with really interesting and delicious menu. I opted for the peach Melba hot cakes. They were phenomenal! Super light and full of flavour. The combination of elements was perfect and the portion size was ideal. Will definitely be back to sample other dishes on the menu.

Came in on a busy Saturday morning. Staff were very attentive despite being busy.

- unique venue
- gin and espresso will blow your mind
- peach hotcakes. Woweee

Loved the venue, super unique location in the church. Highlight of the day was definitely the Peach Melba Hotcakes. Make sure you try their tonic espresso, would be perfect for a hot summers day!

There are lots of great places to eat in the Glenferrie area .. the thing that makes this place stand out is that it offers a calmness that is suprising given how close it is to the busy Glenferrie Road area.

Despite being quite busy when we arrived there were lots of places to sit without feeling on top of each other.

The service was prompt and friendly while keeping a comfortable distance.

There were lots of yummy things on the menu to entice but I chose one of the three specials being offered .. crispy chicken bun with chips. My guest went with the crispy pork bun.

The food took a while to be prepared after being ordered at the counter but it arrived fresh and was tasty so worth the extra bit of time taken.

The crispy chicken didn't disappoint; crispy, tender and with just enough spice to give it a kick. The coleslaw was plentiful and provided a coolness to offset the warmth from the spicy crispy coating. All of this was contained within a soft and toasted bun.

My partner found the pork bun to be a treat but unfortunately it wasn't crispy which left a feeling of dissapointment given that an expectation had been set.

Overall a lovely quite spot for a tasty lunch.

Food : 3.5*
Service : 3.5*
Ambience : 3.5*

Hidden off the heart of Hawthorn is a cosy little cafe located in St Coulums Church. With a cosy indoor area and relaxing outdoor area this place is the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend brunch. We sat outside to enjoy the warm spring weather whilst listening to Saturday morning Choir.

We tried the Chilli Scramble (As always), Corn Fetta and Coriander Fritters and the delicious Peach Melba Hotcakes to finish off our meal. The food was delicious made with fresh ingredients and produce. The highlight was the Peach Melba Hotcakes that were fluffy and not overly sweet. The sweet, fresh peaches complemented the perfect spring day.

The coffees were perfect and the highlight was the Coconut Hot Chocolate.

We loved the relaxing atmosphere, food and the wait staff were friendly and attentive even though we sat outside.

I've been here twice with in a week and the food and the friendly service will bring me back more often! The menu is interesting with different takes on the usual stuff like avo on toast which really do lift the whole taste and deciding on what to get took a while as everything looks great (and Instagram worthy). The staff was friendly and the interior was rustic. Only issue was finding parking close by, especially if you want to have a long brunch!

This hidden gem is a little hard to find. It is located in St. Coulums church, hence the name Chaplain's office. The cafe has an old school vibe to it, which is really unique. We kinda like it, very relaxing indeed.

We got to try the Chaplain's breakfast, sambal pork belly, and raspberry lemon cheesecake french toast. We really enjoyed the meal. The french toast was on point! Our favourite dish would be the sambal pork belly. It was so yummy.

We also tried expresso & tonic, it was really refreshing and unique. The matcha latte was also lovely.

The staff was really friendly and attentive.
We would definitely come back if we are around the area.

I love the cosy, paired back vibe here. I was greeted and taken care of by wonderful staff here. My requests for gluten free options and to change drinks in a set menu were happily received and accommodated. The big breakfast was as delicious and hearty as it looks. The golden latte was one of the best I’ve had in Melbourne! Excellent dining experience.

Quietly secluded place with a huge backyard and inspirational architecture makes you forget your next to burwood rd.
Make sure you give this place a go! You won't be dissapointed. :)

My flavourite cafe in the hawthorn. Top notch food with a menu wanting me to return for more and excellent hot chocolate...I'm sure the coffee is tiptop too. Service is A+.

An amazing hidden gem in Hawthorn. I had the sambal pork belly and omg it was amazing! I would definitely have again. The venue has a nice little old school charm about it which suits the setting next to the church. I would higher recommend to anyone

Great little find in Hawthorne, warm and welcoming environment, fantastic table service. Contemporary menu with good flavours and excellent selection. Rich, full bodied coffee, worth considering if you’re travelling along the Monash.

Love the option of the garden or sitting inside - great to get to on a sunny day with lots of space for kids. At first had a smaller menu with pricier options not working so well for this budget eater BUT now has a wider range with good mid-priced options and the specials are always good. There's also a new version of muffin baked daily by the looks. A rare open space cafe in Hawthorn.

Church conversions are my favourite spaces, but that alone isn't what makes me love The Chaplin's Office. I've never had a bad experience here, or even a questionable one. The food is simple and delicious, the space is friendly and unique, and the staff are bloody lovely. One recognised me after only one visit and greeted me like an old friend the next time I sat down a week later (wish I knew her name so she could get a lil bonus cash from her boss for prompting me to write a glowing review!). You can't hear the road from the courtyard out back, you just get to bask in some sunshine, church architecture and an array of family dogs coming to greet you. Truly what more could you want?

A hidden gem of a cafe, Chaplin's Office has nailed what so many other cafes strive to achieve but fail. Situated inside a church the cafe has a "homey" ambience which is perfectly complemented by upscale yet subtle decor, friendly staff, wonderful coffee and amazing fresh home style food. All this perfectly achieves the "homey" experience. If you are in the area, looking for a new cafe to try out or want to grab a quick bite to eat i highly recommend Chaplin's Office.

Loved the chilled out ambiance that the Chaplains Office provides. We were able to have our large group accommodated and the service was first class from beginning to end. I had the Mushroom and Eggs which couldn't have been cooked better. Coffee is excellent and had its own uniqueness to it. Can't wait to taste the rest of the menu!

Tasty food and great coffee. The service is fantastic and the atmosphere is warm and cosy. Would definitely recommend it. Caters to large groups as well.

Fantastic food, fantastic coffee and staff are lovely. Would highly recommend treating yourself to the fritters with a side of thin bacon. I will definitely be bringing my parents here when they are come to visit from Tasmania. 🤤🤤

Chaplain's Office is in an old church and it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm surprised this place isn't pumping, but I expect it will be soon. Delicious food, fantastic coffee, beautiful interiors. Food and decor both very Instagram-worthy. Clever menu, well presented food, good serving sizes. Nice service. Family friendly. Lovely place for a coffee or brunch.
