Our first time here today. We had the pick of spots to sit as it wasn’t busy. Service was prompt & polite. It’s very cosy inside. On a super cold day it would be delicious with the heater roaring. We started with a chai latte & decaf latte, both on Milk Lab almond milk. The chai was great but alas the decaf latte was sour & had split - something I’ve not ever experienced with Milk Lab. It wasn’t drinkable unfortunately. The food on the other hand was really lovely. We enjoyed the trout omelette & the corn fritters, adding the thyme hash as side to both. Could not fault the meals. Fritters often run the risk of being a very dry dish - but this was balanced well with the romesco sauce, a poached egg & avocado. Would definitely return based on food alone. Hoping next time they can turn it around in the coffee department.

We had visited Chaplains Office on a lovely summer day and here’s a recollection of the experience we had!
Coconut yoghurt breakfast bowl - mango purée, pistachio granola and fresh fruits! This was actually better than I expected (mainly because I’m after heavy meals)! The sweetness of the granola and mango purée went really well with the sourness of the yoghurt and the freshness of the fruits! It was like having a yummy cereal but in this form!
Sambal pork belly & fried egg - twice cooked pork belly with chili and coconut, shallot and kaffir lime sambal, fried egg and spring Asian greens! Now this was quite an interesting dish as I have never seen anything quite like it before! The pork belly was tender and juicy and the sambal added that extra special kick and spiciness to this! The fried egg and Asian greens were good sides that complemented the pork belly!
Peach Melba hotcakes - ricotta and raspberry hotcakes, peach, fresh raspberry, vanilla mascarpone and caramelized white chocolate! Not only did this look pretty but it tasted absolutely exceptional and here’s why! The hotcakes were thick, soft and fluffy! I took a while with the pictures but it was still moist and fluffy (it did not dry out)! The hotcakes were not overly sweet and the elements all worked out so well that made me devour it quickly! For this reasons, it was my fave for the day!
We had a wonderful time at Chaplains Office and would love to visit again for the hotcakes and their other dishes! 😁
Delicious eggs, fantastic potato hash. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Great little space and off the main road so not as busy. Friendly staff which is always a bonus
4.5 Located in an old, you-guessed-it, Chaplain’s Office, it’s easy to enjoy the spacious high ceilings of the light filled interior, or the large courtyard of this quirky, Hawthorn cafe. Time it right and you’ll even hear church organs or the choir too!.
Fo0die dined as a guest of Chaplain’s Office and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.
Located not too far from Glenferrie train station and near Swinburne University, the venue has been opened since early July 2017 and operates out of, what use to be, an old office behind St. Columbs Anglican Church.
Great quality service by the team and the food is the best in the area, not to mention the coffee is great! Would highly recommend for anyone booking events or just catching up with friends.

We came into Chaplains Office the other day and although it was hard to find, once we were inside we loved it- it felt very wholesome
The food is a mix of Asian influence with fresh produced to produce a really enjoyable brunch menu, we tried the chilli scrambled eggs and the smoked kingfish.
The chilli scrambled eggs were really creamy and good flavours, we loved the Asian twist on this dish- I wish there was more of a chilli kick
The smoked kingfish was one of the more unique brunch menu items I have tried as other cafes usually do smoked salmon. The kingfish was delicate and on top of the crunchy sweet potato combined with the seaweed and smoky tea egg it was a winning dish ! Highly recommend this dish if your looking to try something different
Thanks for having us
I found this cafe via Instagram and have been here a few times already. I love their coffee, beans by 5 sense, I love their home made peanut butter cookie and the hot cakes! It's such a cozy and relaxed cafe. The staff are friendly and I love that you can sit on the grass under the trees with your coffee, such a fab cafe!
Have you ever had brunch in a church? Because Chaplain’s Office, just like it says in its name, is just that! A cosy brunch cafe in a brick-lined hut nestled near a church just near Glenferrie Road. And the result? A delicious and innovative brunch menu that just proves to you every time that Melbourne cafes have the ability to surprise and delight.
I visited Chaplain’s Office in Hawthorn with a friend last week and was delighted to find such a quaint café so close to my house. I had been eying off a few of their menu items on Instagram and couldn’t wait to try them myself.
The café is hidden on a side street off Burwood Road, and has a lovely, rustic feel inside. There are tables outside in the courtyard and ample seating inside. The staff were warm and attentive and very understanding of the toddler at our table, who was keen to paint the table with our food.
We ordered a coffee and a chai latte to start and both were beautiful. The chai had a lovely cinnamon smell and came in a mug, while the coffee was nice and strong (just the way I like it). I ordered the chilli scramble and my friend ordered the corn fritters to share with her daughter.
Hands down, the chilli scramble was the best that I’ve had in Melbourne this year. The combination of egg, cheese, spring onion and chilli was perfect and the streaky bacon strips were delicious and crunchy. I thought that the addition of bean sprouts was an odd choice, but it actually worked perfectly and I will be adding them to my scrambled eggs at home from now on! This dish was perfect in every way and I highly recommend that you try it when you visit.
My friend demolished the corn, feta and coriander fritters. It came with a generous serve of chorizo, avocado, pickled guindilla peppers and a poached egg. She said that the fritters were crunchy and loved that there were three little fritters instead of huge ones – it made the flavour stronger and made it easier to share
I loved our visit to Chaplain’s Office and look forward to returning so I can try the panna cotta and the hot cakes! Thanks for having us, team ☺
Amazed this place isn't more busy! We had a fantastic brunch here. Chaplains office is in a beautiful building right within church grounds. The staff were friendly, the service was quick. The menu has great variety. I had probably the best golden latte I've had in Melbourne and the ricotta hotcakes were beautifully presented and tasty. All of us left feeling very satisfied. Will be back!
The chilli scramble eggs was delicious. The flavour of the chilli was great.
A personal favourite! This place always delivers. Delicious food and coffee, but the warmth and service sets this place apart
Excellent coffee, excellent hot chocolate, friendly customer service. It is a beautiful venue, sat quietly looking at the blossom on the trees. Definitely worth visiting in pleasant weather, sitting outside under the trees. Delicious chocolate brownie, oat porridge with honeycomb, and sour dough toast with jam.
Such a lovely cafe with simple interiors, it is also lovely to sit out in the court yard or listen to the church choir rehearsing. The food is exquisite and a nice variety. I also had my favourite Beetroot Latte!!! St Columbs is also wheelchair appropriate.
I would highly recommend this cafe to anyway interested in wonderful food and those who are social ethically minded
Really lovely cafe in Hawthorn. Has quite a European vibe with the setting in an old church and the outdoor seating in the courtyard. If you enter up the tree lined pathway you almost forget you're even in the city. Food is great and not too expensive.
Very much an undiscovered gem. Tucked away off Burwood Rd, I could speak more highly of the Chaplain’s Office. The coffee is 5 senses which isn’t one of my favourites but I was very pleasantly surprised with my Flat White. I had the mushroom & eggs with potato hash which was also outstanding. 9.5/10 (about as high as I can score anything)
