Small Fry is my favourite discovery since arriving in Hobart! The food is interesting and delicious, with lots of locally sourced (and foraged) ingredients, top-notch coffee and a great atmosphere, as everyone in the teeny cafe is seated around the kitchen watching the chef prepare each dish. He’s a culinary wizard; one moment wielding the blow torch to finish off the perfect fried egg, the next delivering a precise sprinkling of chives to the the top of a basil and heirloom tomato salad, an artfully laid pickle and a scattering of micro herbs to accompany a three-cheese toastie. Of particular note (I hasten to add) is the Irish waiter, whose glorious presence added subtly (but significantly!) to the overall impeccable caliber of the cafe. I recommend you greet him warmly upon arrival and request an immediate, steady and constant flow of coffee while you watch whatever delectable dish you’ve ordered being brought to life.
We came for breakfast today and both said it’s the nicest breakfast we have ever had!! We had the black pudding with bacon and it was amazing. It was busy when we were in but the wait wasn’t long at all (especially compared to some melbourne cafes) and it was really nice watching the chef make our food! We will definitely be back and be recommending to everyone coming to Hobart. Thanks guys
We had breakfast yesterday (Wednesday) and we came back again today before flying back to Victoria. The food is excellent, as is the coffee, service and the theatrics with Rhys and staff. We bought some donuts for later ......."yum". Hobart you are so lucky to have a funky place like Small-fry.
Without a doubt one of the most amazing eating places I've ever been to.
Not only was the food and coffee first class, the exceptional service levels and attention to the customers was awesome.
Watching the staff and chef 👨🍳 working their magic was stunning and very clean.
The home made donuts were by far the best I've ever had (and I love my donuts).
A great little place to stop and get treated like someone important.
Trevor
I cannot recommend this sweet, sweet little place highly enough. On a visit from Vic, my sister and I visited twice: once for a coffee and donut and the next day for breakfast. Both times we were blown away by the quality of the food, coffee and environment. Just sublime. Thank you.
The food is outstanding!
The presentation is outstanding!
The coffee spot on!
And the chef.... is a gun !
In awe watching him create this food art !
Definitely going back!
A must !
Food and atmosphere is amazing but the staff is what makes this cosy cafe one to remember. We are from Melbourne and this is the best cafe we have ever been to.
Everything is amazing!!
We got the Apple Fritters and the Croque and there was nothing left on the plate when we finished. The presentation was incredible and their passion for food was evident. The marriage of flavours was spot on. The croque was paired with pickled onions, relish and gerkhins. The fritters were moist and tasty. Vegetarians rejoice, because you will be more than satisfied with the delicious menu choices.
Equal to if not better than some of the best breakfast offerings in sydney and melbourne. The chef (i feel rude not knowing his name) is mesmerizing to watch and will leave you appreciating your meal even more. Great coffee too!!!
They may call it “Small”-fry but the service with the home style feel and amassing food provides a Big 5/5 well worth experiencing this small place with big atmosphere
Coffee is always spectacular and the doughnuts are to die for - salted caramel and chocolate today nearly gave me an orgasm
Fantastic service, the most delicious breakfast of a 4-cheese croque with bacon to die for, all most carefully prepared right in front of you. My tastebuds kept doing a happy dance! Thanks for a delicious breakfast!
Definitely one of the best food experiences I've ever had, both the service and food is top notch.
This little place packs a punch - the coffee is great to begin with, the menu items are well varied and expertly crafted in front of you (the pork belly sliders deserve a special mention) and the desserts are some of the best I've ever had. Will definitely be coming back.
The small room space cannot fit much people inside, but sitting around the open kitchen to see how the chef handle the food is really joyful. The unique seating allows the customer can have more oppotunity to communicate with the chef directly, which is very different experience to the other cafes in Australia.
The carpaccio is not something can feed up an empty stomach, but the already rich woody flavour of dry aged beef slices with extra virgin olive oil and the chef’s secret smoked chilli vinegar gives very complex and unique taste and note. The taste are not strong so not recommend to have the dish with other food or drinks simultaneously, or those unique complex taste would be covered and faded.
Very nice cosy little spot in the city. Loved watching the chef prepare the meals for all the patrons. I had the black pudding which is something I don't normally order but it turned out to be an amazing choice. Staff were friendly and the wait for the food was well worth it. Decor and plateware also on point.
This is a “dinning” experience unlike any other cafe. Mix of chef’s table with local produce and knowledge. The chef was mesmerizing to watch as he made our meals with precision and bantered with us. Staff were super friendly and suggested local spots for us to check out. We had the omelette and black pudding - both were delicious. Black pudding for the win. Super savory, perfectly seasoned - absolute stunning experience
Ordered beef carpaccio and corque (cheese sandwich I believe). We went to the restaurant on the day before but it was too crowded that we had to wait for 40 mins. We couldn’t wait so we came on the next day and got seats in 15 mins. Food was great, coffee was great, and the chef was really enjoying his cooking, which was really pleasant to see.
The food and chef’s way of preparing food is so amazing and special, this is prob the reason why this is one of the best cafes in Hobart. However as we were here for the first time and had no idea that you take order on the one by one sequence, we were a bit confused at the beginning. I think i will give 5 star if the waitress can explain the way how you take order a little bit more patiently to us.
The experience here is great! The way of serving is unique! The chef is amazing and the waiter there is so friendly. I would give 5 star for the food and the amazing art of chef. However, the waitress makes us feel a bit unwelcome by the way she’s talking to us.
Exceptional food and service. Best breakfast I’ve had ... ever! Coffee and donuts such a delight. We had one nearly every day we were on our Hobart vacay! Couldn’t recommend more! loved the intimacy of being so close to the chef.
Fantastic place.
Breakfast was absolutely amazing! Well worth waiting for and the price. Great experience to watch the chef cook in front of you!

If your willing to test your luck than I recommend it because you may be waiting a while to get a seat. Small-fry isn't the biggest little cafe but it sure may be the busiest. You get a pretty fun experience here because you can watch the chef create your dish right in front of you. The donuts were the main reason I came here and they did not disappoint. Being from the US donut is life but small-fry has done it to perfection. Depending what time of the day you arrive they may be sold out, so I recommend going there in the morning if you want to have multiple options. I also had to try something else other than just donuts. The pork belly sandwhich was unreal with a cole slaw in their to give it another crunch. Take the time out of your day and visit here, you won't be disappointed.
Small-fry was a must do on a friend’s cafe list for Hobart. We visited here on the public holiday to find it shut. Lucky for us we had the next morning to give it another crack. Located close to our accomodation we rolled up early here to savour their breakfast. Glad we got here early as time went past in the morning all the seats filled up and there was a queue of people. Seating is around the kitchen on stools basically like a bar area. We could see the chef single handedly preparing all the meals with care and happiness. The service here is lovely and great vibe in this small cafe. If you do have to wait they have a little table and chairs to perch on.
Our seats were in front of the donut cabinet (ominous sign for me as another friend told me I must get the Creme Brûlée Donut) and thought I was in for a treat as they all looked so plump and delicious. They serve Ritual coffee here.
With so many yummy dishes coming out of the kitchen it was hard what to choose! I settled upon the Omelette which I added bacon to. Dining companion chose two Sliders (egg & bacon as well as crumbed haloumi). Omelette was well cooked with a filling of caramelised onion, gruyere and thyme. Loved it as the flavours were amazing together. The crispy bacon was served on the side with the chestnut toast. Never tried it before and more dense than usual bread but held up well against the richness of the omelette. The sliders were small in size but packed in flavour.
Decided I needed that donut and so glad I did. The top of it was glossy with a sugared top and once you ‘crack’ through the donut it reveals a custardy
middle. Loved the combo and had it with a Cappuccino. Such a treat.
It’s definitely well worth getting here early so you don’t have to wait to tuck into the meals on offer.
Stopped by on our visit to Hobart. Wonderful food and great coffee that we re-visited for. Really love that the kitchen is in the one room and you can see how they prepare your food - great transparency!
Great brunch experience in the city of Hobart. Most seats are at the bar and everything is made fresh artistically in front of you. Staff are attentive and very very friendly. Coffee is great too! Ericson Chow
Small fry has a limited space where customers seated to the open kitchen to see the cooking process. We were welcomed and served as soon as we entered the cafe around lunch time. The coffee was amazing. The choice of food is limited but it is definitely the master piece to be on the list. The owner cooks the food himself and can tell that he has prepared the food with love and passions. The pork belly sliders were incredible. The bathroom was clean. Will be back again if I go to Tasmania.
Really cute cafe, small but cozy. Food was all delicious and very well balanced and coffee great as well. I like how you can watch the cook, keeps it interesting.
Craving some good coffee I referred to Zomato and we came up with this place. Cute little hipster joint in Hobart with limited seating. Really enjoyed the coffee - it was much needed!
First time to Small Fry this morning for breakfast and it was amazing. The staff were incredible, attentive and very easy to talk to. Though the actual cafe was small it was beautiful and very entertaining to watch your food getting made. The food and the coffee was amazing, would recommend a visit!
What an absolute gem. Only seating a dozen or so, you sit at the counter while the chef cooks only inches from you. Staff are friendly, food is delicious. You might need to wait as seats are limited but service is quick and it's well worth the wait.
Very cute breakfast bar - you can watch the chef create each beautiful dish. I had 2 sliders - egg bacon and also a pork belly. They were very yum. But the most spectacular item is the fritters - apple raisin and all the perfect ingredients for something amazing. Have been to several awesome restaurants this week in Hobart but those fritters win!

Cute + cosy little cafe where you can sit at the breakfast bench and watch the chef prepare your dish right in front of you! Food was killer also! Just prepare to wait for a seat as there is very limited space.
Nice food and coffee. But I can not see the cheif cooking the food from my seat. less interesting... but still a good restaurant. Would try next time.
Really delicious! Love how the chef makes it in front of you and their quality of food and coffee is amazing. The only downside is that the venue is small so be prepared to wait but well worth it. Make sure you go in pairs as you will get a better seating and better view.
The Spot: intimate. There was an almost reverent impulse to whisper and cast your eyes downwards like you're walking into Sunday mass late. Both staff and patron alike. What started off as eerie quickly became clearly a collective respect and appreciation for what this little cafe is trying to be about - the process and cuisine, and certainly not the "cafe culture".
The Service: reserved, borderline grumpy. But to give them the benefit of the doubt, I would call it "genuine".
The Food: packs a punch, but a delicate one. Think: ninja. I ordered The Beans and it legitimately gave me pause. The flavour was so unexpected. It came from the ham hock, braised to a creamy, almost cheesy consistency. Without the tomato, chilli and zest of the popular shakshuka-like dishes, it allowed the beans to shine. The silky texture was gloriously juxtaposed by a crispy rice and pepita crumb. Be still my beating heart. The accompaniment of greens was cooked with a most satisfying salted, buttery bite. Let the mound of wilted spinach leaves be truly a thing of the past.
The Drink: I had a small strong latte and it was bold and it was beautiful.
This place is subverting the typical cafe fanfare. There's definitely a "mood" to it that makes you wonder whether or not the staff are enjoying themselves, but the care and quality of the food banishes all doubt. You cannot serve this kind of food and not have your heart and soul in it.
A very unique concept and a lovely one too! The chef cooks right in front of you and serve you the food. You can interact with the chef directly which is mind blowing and while he is preparing your meal - you can see and talk to him. Isn’t it amazing? The cafe doesn’t have a huge sitting area but it can accommodate 15pax which is not bad. The food was outstanding and the ambience too.
Service - 5/5
Ambience - 4/5
Food - 5/5
Value for Money - 5/5
That coffee..! I was a little disappointed there was no lactose free milk available, but who needs LF when you can make a soy latte like that!
Small fry is unique in every sense. A tiny cafe with very few seats, your food is prepared one by one in front of you. They really take food appreciation and love to a new level. A small menu is a testament to the fine detail and thought. The coffee and cakes are incredible too. A must visit in Tasmania and worth every minute to wait.
What an awesome little place! The food was so delicious and the staff were very friendly and attentive. A real comfy atmosphere especially having your food cooked in front of you whilst chatting to the chef. Loved it. Thanks guys!
Most amazing flavoursome breakfast I've ever had! My boyfriend said the same about his too. The service was fantastic. The shared sitting space is really friendly and cool. The chef is cooking up right in front of you, doing an amazing job and is interacts with you with a fun and funny manor. Not to mention the cafe itself is a really nicely designed joint. Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Couldn't fault it.
This place is so genuine! With a single Chef, a barrister and finally along with a waitress all providing for the desires of so many people it could not get any more unique and authentic, An extremely rare feel of authenticity, i would advise all to check this place out as it wont disappoint.
Small and cosy in North Hobart. Chef cooks directly in front of you so you can see all the ingredients that make up the gorgeous meals. I had the hot chocolate with homemade chocolate marshmallow which was to die for! Coffee was great, too. The porridge was creamy and flavoursome and comes with lemon curd, cocoa pops and a range of other delicious additions. The sliders were yummy - need to order 2-3 to be satisfied though. The people next to us got the omelettes when bacon and they smelt so good! Would definitely recommend this place for breakfast to anyone visiting Hobart.
Damn good! Another recommended to us by a Hobart local. Great coffees and super efficient process through meet and great, seat, order, delivery and eating. Quality dishes effortlessly put together within view.
The chef created a vegan option for us on spec that would have been a star feature on a menu elsewhere. Get in early as they were really busy and I can see why. Service and coffee and food amazing.
Small Fry is simply the best! Their service is great, just pop up to the counter (nice and early on a cold morning), order a hot cinnamon donut (made to order!) and one of the smoothest espressos you will ever taste! Love it!
Awesome food and coffee. Decor is very cool and tunes are very smooth. Watch the chef make your omelette with love! Great vibe too and great staff.
Excellent breakfast with very good coffee. The name is not ironic, it's a very small place so don't be surprised if there is no space left inside. Well worth the effort to get in early to get a seat. The chef takes tremendous pride I his work and he leads a great little team. Highly recommended while visiting Hobart.
It's beautiful to sit and watch the care with which the staff work. The food here is special. Don't rush. Don't get distracted with your phone. Just receive the sacramental goodness of donuts and thank God.
What an amazing little find. Super sad that we only stumbled across it on our last day. Coffee is amazing and the food is simply DEVINE. We had the pasta and the Four cheese croque and both dishes were flawless. Will be our first stop when we're in Hobart next. It's a must visit!
Delicious tasting doughnuts and pastries. Rhubarb filled doughnut was excellent. Available for takeaway.
Small cute venue. Would be a great brunch location.

Forget Coco Pops and Froot Loops, if you want a sugary start to your day then nothing beats the toasty-warm baked goods from Small-fry Hobart!!
Caramel Apple doughnuts, oozing out of the middle when you break them open? Or perhaps the all-sweetness-and-light Chelsea bun?
Your selection is irrelevant, the flavours are guaranteed to be fantastic either way!!
We found Small Fry after Google search for places to dine in Hobart. So glad we made the time to dine there. It is a small hole in the wall cafe with half the space filled by a completely open kitchen and the other with a large bench to sit at facing the chef. We opted to dine at the front window which was lovely as it was a sunny day.
Small Fry are known for their pastries and in particular doughnuts (yum, they are awesome), but go early or you might miss out! We ordered sliders and a fresh quinoa salad with quail egg. It was a delicious surprise that it was so good, since we expected it to be standard bakery fair.
The coffee is great and milkshakes even better. Try it, it's worth it!
Cool venue and concept. The food was Great, and the beer was spot on. Chef/owner was a legend with good chat, service staff were very attentive. Was a pleasure to eat lunch, will be back
Lazed in to Small Fry after my last night shift of the week for some well-earned Brunch and was thrilled to discover yet another stellar Tasmanian establishment! Friendly and accommodating service, adorable interior and above all, amazing food.
Had a hot chocolate while awaiting friends which was served with the world's foamiest marshmallow, followed by the mussels&chorizo in verjuice, and nicked some of my friends' delicious doughnuts. Everything was wonderful and the mussels and clams were cooked perfectly swimming in generous portions of delectable sauce that would make a French chef swoon.
Well done you guys, will be back!
Found this place by pure chance, and was a great find. Chef's cooking in front of you so you can see everything that is going into your meal! Amazing pastries and over all great atmosphere. Highly recommend
This tiny but cute eatery on Bathurst street near Hobart’s CBD is gorgeous and a real experience for a coffee, all day breakfast or quick lunch. Open seven days, the menu is short but good!. The crumbed haloumi slider with celeriac remoulade and the shaved brisket with rava dressing slider are both excellent….
A lovely intimate eating experience, we shared 3 sliders and a salad. The haloumi slider was a taste sensation! Nice range of beers and wine. Friendly service, we always enjoy Small Fry.
Super cute little cafe with gorgeous decor and a mind blowing chef! You get to sit around and watch him prepare all the dishes, the attention he gives to every detail is just fascinating. One of the best lunch experiences I've ever had and highly recommended to anyone visiting Hobart.
Great small cafe which has good coffee and nice wholesome food. Great experience with the two staff, Jess and Pat. Being able to chat with them and sit in front whilst they prepare our meals. I highly recommend others to come and enjoy the personal experience you get here.
I had been seeing a few Facebook posts recently about Small Fry in Hobart, which seemed to be mostly about donuts. Last weekend, Jen had a post-holiday catch-up planned with Amy at Small Fry, so I crashed it to check this place out. I had no idea what to expect from the food (other than the donuts, which looked lovely), but funnily it turned about to be French inspired which teamed nicely with our dinner plans that evening – at a French restaurant!
Fantastic little gem of Hobart! Highly recommended, great coffee, great food and wonderful service. This place is where passion shines through
Great coffee. Let's say an 'intimate' area to eat in, but hopefully hobartians encourage this sort of thing... Bit hard to find a park but worth the walk!
Tempted to write nothing as I want to keep it for those in the know! . I love it, small, special, quality , simple,
This place is special. Delicious fresh and healthy modern food prepared in front of you in a tiny cafe. The coffee is great and the staff are warm and friendly. I wish this was my local cafe!
Small fry is sweet, good food, they have some pretty interesting prep techniques which are fun to watch. Well worth a look.
Fantastic food and the two staff who were working were lovely. Will definitely come back.
Great new bar/cafe replacing sidecar. Small fry is in the space previously occupied by Side-car. The food is simple, beautifully executed and surprising - we would go back for it. The space is minuscule which makes for a very different dining experience- bit like sitting in what I wish was my own kitchen, having a drink and chatting with the chef while you watch your food being prepared for you. The place is informal with a menu of small plates so expect quality rather than quantity- also has good breakfast and lunch options and great coffee- and don't overlook the donuts
What Small-fry can’t be accused of is pretentiousness. They have taken a successful aesthetic and made it their own, with a quirky menu of casual eating, from breakfast, right through to evening dr

An intimate atmosphere, the simple pleasure of watching and chatting with a chef at work, and bespoke dishes for the discerning diner are what Small Fry offer. We loved it and I’m sure we’ll be back again sometime soon!
Small-Fry is a true gem of a cafe and my favourite in Hobart. The food, coffee, decor are all on point and make eating here a delight. The interior is a wonderfully intimate small space that means you can watch the chef prepare and cook your food. It's a marvelous experience and coupled with the fun banter you get from him as you watch and eat, makes this a truly unique cafe to visit.
My favourite item on the menu is the croque which is absolutely delicious and with added bacon it is just perfect. The four-cheese toasty is easily the best I've had with such a wonderful combination of flavours. I know that when I'm back in Hobart I'll definitely be coming back just for that!
That isn't to say that the other items on the menu aren't as good because they are also amazing! The granola is superb and one of my all time favourites. The black pudding is wonderful homely food and a friend from Ireland tells me that it reminds him of the puddings from back there which is a great compliment. Also the omelette is super popular at small-fry and it's a lot of fun to watch the chef put it together.
Good coffee is a really important part of a cafe and small-fry doesn't disappoint here either. The temperature is perfect and I found the coffees consistently good regardless of which one I had.
Last, but not least, the donuts at small-fry--they're awesome! Try them all but the lemon meringue is my favourite since it isn't too sweet or tangy and it's flavour packs such a subtle punch that doesn't overpower the donut base itself.
Small fry has a limited space where customers seated to the open kitchen to see the cooking process. We were welcomed and served as soon as we entered the cafe around lunch time. The design of the cafe is straight forward and minimal. 10/10 for Instagram photos. The coffee was amazing. The choice of food is limited but it is definitely the master piece to be on the list. The owner cooks the food himself and can tell that he has prepared the food with love and passions. The pork belly sliders were incredible. The bathroom was clean. Will be back again if I go to Tasmania.
A good breakfast experience approaching the calibre of brunch spots across the Tasman.
Small-fry was at full capacity minutes after opening in the morning. It seems very popular with the locals.
Huddle around the long table and watch one chef heroically cook a dozen well-presented breakfast dishes at once. There is a small wait for the food.
The sausage and salmon dishes tasted good. The salmon was slightly dry however (pre-cooked).
Small let-down by the lack of specialty coffee, which is now standard at hip spots on the mainland.
Overall a good experience. Recommended if you have an hour or so to spare in the morning for a leisurely breakfast.
What a great find in Hobart! Breakfast prepared right in front of u, great coffee & chai, friendly & efficient service! I ordered the smoky pork belly slider. It was delicious! The place is a bit small, so if it gets busy, u may have to wait a while to be seated.
Had 2x flat white and omelette with bacon - delicious and on point. Staff are friendly, accommodating, and it was cool to see the chef and sou working side by side like a well oiled machine. There was a 30min wait on a Saturday morning - you can wait at the front with coffee and it was worth the wait.
One of our favourite spots in Hobart - superb coffee, food, service. This spot is small, and only open for breakfast and brunch, but it is a must go when you're in Hobart. Simple brunch fare is elevated to new heights - not just in terms of presentation but also taste. The brioche is absolutely divine. And the donuts are definitely the best in town!
IT'S our first time in Hobart and tried something locally. It is the best coffee for me so far and the food is perfect. My husband doesn't like Mussels normally cause of its texture and sometimes it's chewy as well. But they did have the most fresh one and so soft and it felt like melting in your mouth. Highly recommend and must try food when u have chance in Hobart. It is worth to try definitely. Love it.
Excellent coffee and really great food. Came here with the family and had the Pork Belly Slider, Mushroom Tartine and the Chicken salad. All were absolutely delicious. Would definitely recommend dropping by to this cosy and friendly place for a meal.
