Whilst spending four days in Hobart Templo was on the top of my bucket list. Dined here on Monday night with a friend and I am still dreaming about the food we ate. Everything was exceptional from start to finish including the G&T at the start to the beuatiful carrafee of chianti we drank. We both had the tasting menu and it was insanely good i could have eaten it all over again. The gnocchetti with the rabbit ragu was a major standout for us both. Service was excellent, food was by far some of the best I've ever had and the whole experience from the vibe, space, service was just sublime. Hands down to the chef for doing such an incredible job and the gorgeous wait staff you have working for you. Templo will be my first pit stop when I return back to Hobart. Keep up the exceptional work guys and thank you for the extra goodies up at the bar. Templo has inspired me to open up a space like this back home in melbourne as im in the industry and love what you guys do.
Possibly the best meal I’ve ever eaten.
Chefs Tasting Menu (8 dishes) was absolutely perfect - amazing flavors, good portion sizes, creative but homely food. Service was flawless. Relaxed atmosphere.
You MUST go here if visiting.
Limited selection from the menu however all dishes are beyond excellent.
Templo’s a one of a kind dining experience that makes me want to move to Hobart. It might initially appear concise: in space & in menu descriptions - but that’s offset with generosity in booze, good humour & banter. It feels like being at a friend’s dinner party with its shared food, unique wines, communal dining & fun times.
Knowing there’s only 20 seats, we didn’t reserve communal spots because: people. Not always a fan. Tell you what, our possies at the bar were the place to be - love, love, loved it & the relaxed hijinx we had with staff. Rochelle was super fun, unpretentious & my new bestie by the time we tumbled out the door. There was even an impromptu Rockwiz-style quiz around the excellent playlist at one point. Superb personal attention.
A carefully curated menu optimises the best seasonal produce, bought direct from local farmers, & its simplicity leaves you guessing. There were 8 Italian inspired dishes on the blackboard so obvs we went the chef’s menu - the entire selection for $70 + matched wines for another $70. A must do. Such quality and excellent value for money - honestly doesn’t compare to anything at home.
You could taste the respect for the produce in the succession of plates. Every one was a surprise and a creative delight. Guanciali is cured in-house, as is the prosciutto & they make their own cheese too. Pacing between courses was perfect & the lack of pomp & ceremony refreshing. ‘Use your hands’ encourages Rochelle for the gnocco fritto. So we do - then lick our fingers.
There’s no skimping with the wonderful international wine pairing either. If it’s any indication of the night, I found a note in my phone saying how much I love bojangles...haha...presumably a reference to the very textural ditalini broccoli which was paired with a divine beaujolais.
Dining experiences don’t get much better than this. It’s ridiculously good & the epitome of Hobart. Quirky, unexpected, relaxed, homely, uncomplicated & a must visit. Would return in a heartbeat. Next time we’ll also go to their wine bar offshoot, Sonny, as recommended by chef Matt.
@templohobart Tucked away along in the back streets of Hobart is this amazing 1 hat 20 seater restaurant that focuses on simplicity and fresh produce.Had the gnochetti and it was the highlight of the night.Lets just say simplicity goes a long way
Must try the lonza, one of the better pasta places I have had.
Love the small and warm vibe of this place. The food was delicious, we had the chef’s selection, the dishes came out in timely manner, service was decent.
Do yourselves a favor and go here.
We had dined at one of the “go to” establishments the night before which made is hesitant about doing a “feed me” menu in case it turned out to be terrible. Honestly, this changed things for us! The feed me menu is the whole menu just in smaller serves, which was amazing. Every course was fantastic, seasoned well and had a great balance of textures, seasoning and flavours. The intimacy of the space is also really cool and suits the menu well.
And to anyone who has said bad things about the wine list - shame on you. It is rare to have wines by the glass that are all amazing, and this place did. I’m not going to pretend they’re $9 a glass but they are worth every dollar you spend. And some collabs with amazing winemakers you won’t taste anywhere else either.
If you can get in here, it is totally worth it. The pricing is reasonable and the food is amazing. This will be on my list to recommend to anyone who asks!
Quite liked the small, homely vibe here! The chefs selection was the best we’d had on our trip in Hobart. But the dishes still felt as though it needed a little more love, or uniqueness, for the most part they’d all played it safe flavour-wise. The table service was lovely and kind.
After hearing numerous faultless reviews about this interesting 20 seater restaurant we decided to give it a go for a Sunday night dinner.
We arrived a few mins prior to the second seating and could already see a queue outside the restaurant, as the first seating of the night departed in absolute gastronomic bliss the expectations of the second wave where building.
We were very efficiently seated and tendered to, choosing the chefs tasting menu and an very well price Nebbiolo that oozed hues of white balsamic and meadow sweet.
The restaurant was rather cosy loud. And considerably louder as the night wore on. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea however confirms the suspicions you might have regarding the Italianisms of Templo.
The first course started with a bang of flavour explosion which was carried on through the next few courses.
Unfortunately the fish course (last savoury course) missed the mark and was served over cooked and dry.
All in all, a great dining experience. Pretty close to faultless.
Highly recommend this place.
We’ll recommended to us & i would pass on those recommendations. It is a different dining experience seating only 20 people, chef’s menu was 8 dishes for $70 which i think was amazing value. The service was really good making sure things were explained & everything was enjoyed.
It is a very small space but that adds to the atmosphere & experience.
The food was all delicious, especially loved that pork dish & dessert was a great finisher.
A very small restaurant that has seating for 20, it is best booked as early as possible to ensure you get a reservation here. The menus are written on the chalkboard alongside the alcoholic beverages on offer. At the suggestion of the friendly waitstaff, we went with the Chef’s Menu which meant we got to try all the dishes on the menu tonight with fear of missing out!
There were 7 savoury courses and 1 sweet course on offer as well as a complimentary starter and bread. Highlights were the Spaghetti Alla Gricia which had a lovely pork jowl mixed in the sauce. The Gnochetti were pillowy soft pasta topped with breadcrumbs. The Pork Scalloppine were tender pieces of pork on top of a lovely purée and dressed with greens.
The ambience is lovely and each plate of food was shared amongst 2. The Italian food is served in a modern way.
