Le Provencal is a throwback of sorts, to an uncomplicated time when word of mouth was king, and service just as important as the meal itself. Jean-Claude, head chef, certainly knows his way around a kitchen (his sauces in particular are divine!), while wife Julie manages front of house with effortless professionalism, offering unhurried advice, friendly banter and silence in ideal proportion.
Whether it’s celebration of one of life’s great milestones, or simply a celebration of life itself, Le Provençal offer genuine, classical French cooking from the heart.
Cute little French bistro in a non-touristy area. Decided to try this place as it was just down the road from where we were staying. This doesn’t appear to be a very touristy area so I think it’s mostly locals who go here. The food was great - unpretentious (but not cheap) Bistro style French food - the steak was great. Service was friendly and helpful - it’s a very small place so there’s only one person but she wasn’t flustered and knew the menu (and wine matchings) inside out. Make sure you book in advance as the place only has a few seats and was full on a weeknight.
After a long time between visits went back to this wonderful little restuarant and had a superb meal. French onion soup duck and a raspberry parfait for me all great. Sharon had soup the special of the night braised lamb shoulder and crime caramel which she gave big thumbs up. Great service and wonderful ambience. It won't be so long between visits I can assure people.
Food and service was fantastic. There were 9 of us dining and not one complaint about any of the courses.
Delicious authentic french . Nice and relaxing atmosphere inside of restaurant. Nice and friendly service. Might be better to book before visiting.
Great French style restaurant! Very friendly service!
A French bistro serving classic dishes. There are limited seats and the ambiance is uncrowded and welcoming. The drinks list is useful if you want just a glass of wine or a beer or a cognac while many customers BYO their own wine. It is well worth taking a special bottle because the food is just so good. This is a Hobart institution and great value in terms of the technique and balance in the dishes offered as well as for the unpretentious dining experience.
Divine rustic French food my fave Hobart restaurant it's BYO the service is warm & friendly and the food is the BEST French food I've EVER had anywhere in Australia you will leave rolling out the door 10/10 My personal favourite
Deliciously robust flavours. Friendly and attentive but unfussy service. Lovely atmosphere - get the feeling there are a few "regulars" who dine here... and I can't blame them! Will definitely be back.
A cozy non-pretentious restaurant with a well established reputation for great quality and simple elegance. My partner and I have enjoyed dining here for well over a decade. It's our favourite restaurant in Hobart. Be sure to book well ahead, as this place is popular with the locals.
Nice to have a beautiful, long meal with time to chat. A great wine was recommended to us and all three of us had great meals. Duck, salmon and beef mains, with French onion soup and ravioli for entree. The dessert menu looked great but we could not fit any more in.
