Review The Good Kitchen - Hurstville

Story Keeper
Friendly staff, acceptable food but kind of home cooked quality, so not something you can’t DIY with the right tools. The congee was a bit off and when we told them they instantly changed it for us, no bad attitude at all! I ordered from them on EASI and the taste is amazing. I love the crispiness of the salt and pepper pork and the fried rice is nicely seasoned not too salty at all!

Looks like your avg run of the mill Chinese restaurant, but the food is here very good for a good price. They are famous for their "Free Range Chicken", which is less fatty and I assume corn fed. They offer great value on their Set Meals for parties of 2 or more. Food is freshly made and staff are friendly. Large range of traditional chinese dishes.

Went there with my friends two days ago. We ordered a set which cost about 120 AUD which included four dishes. The service in this restaurant is very good, helped us to change the plates several times, gave us a bowl of soup at first and dessert for free at last. Also, parking is available outside the restaurant, very convenient!

This place is famous for serving the traditional Hong Kong style breakfast combo of congee and steamed rice paper rolls in a meal deal around the $10 mark. All 4 kinds of congee (minced beef, chicken & mushroom, seafood, mixed pork) are great. TIP: Add white pepper to your congee to spice it up

Very very good Hong Kong style Cantonese food. Owner John very helpful with suggestions. Fish was live coral trout and cooked to perfection.

We have ordered a few times at this restaurant this month, and very happy with the food quality and freshness as well as the friendly staff. The Lobster with noodle is so affordable and yummy!! I will definitely recommend my friends and family to visit :)

Last Saturday I have ordered Crab Meat Vermicelli Casserole very delicious 😋 I love it .

Authentic Cantonese food. Reasonable price as well. The fresh seafood here is very delicious. The daily specials offer good deals. Dining environment is average. But take away is good.

I was initially drawn to the Good Kitchen by a photo of 皮蛋瘦肉粥 on its Zomato page. This implied to me that it would be a quick and easy place to get a quick and easy feed. It was only until we were situated and tea had been served that I realised that The Good Kitchen is very much a legitimate restaurant, complete with its own live seafood tanks (more on that later), and not as accommodating for a quick and easy meal. My girlfriend will attest that I deliberated leaving after looking at the menu, but ultimately stasis was the basis of my decision.

I think this place is newly opened or newly renovated, the owner was doing the most to ensure we were satisfied with the food. He recommended a lunch special for 4 which included pork and century egg congee, breadsticks, steamed chicken (amazing!), beef rice noodles and Chinese broccoli. Really good price for delicious Cantonese food!

Been going here for years now. Very consistent place that you can rely on for tasty canto/hk food. Wide range of dishes on the menu, not fancied up that keeps things interesting. Always new things to try, not that I tend to. Prices are standard. They also have pretty good breakfast/arvo special deals that's always a bargain.

Consistent HK styled chinese food. This is our local go to place when we don't feel like cooking. For dinner, we go for for the set for 2 people - pick 2 dishes from the list + vege + rice + complementary soup.

I usually eat here for the afternoon tea from 2-5pm. The food is relatively cheap and the style of food is very similar to the ones you find in HK cafes. With the likes of instant noodles, French toast, rice rolls etc. accompanied with a free drink of red bean milk or milk tea. My friend rejected a free drink. HAHAHAHA

So Good kitchen is really the only other HK cafe contender in Hurstville. I have probably been here a few times but to be honest, i don't come here often. The food here is exactly what you expect from a HK cafe. The quality of food however, is quite average. I find the food to be marginally better at Sun Ming. The chef seems to be the same during the week making it quite consistent. The service and value is quite good too which makes it a good option from time to time.

I was stuck in Hurstville, and consulted my good friend zomato for a recommendation. Treacy St is full of places, with many reasonable ratings, so I took a stab in the dark and went to the closest one I could find.

I like the name "Good Kitchen". They're not saying "great" or "excellent", just good. Although that leaves the possibility of an Evil Kitchen somewhere.

Anyway, it must be said the service was prompt, yet disinterested, and orders were taken. The lady ordered some disgusting sounding mushroom and tofu nonsense, whereas I went the shredded duck and combination noodles. I say "disgusting" mainly because I despise mushrooms.

My meal, of course and ironically, featured many mushrooms. Otherwise it was ok, but plain and lackluster, like a dinner party with an accountant. My rule is: if the ingredient is categorised in the same family as Tinea, you should probably avoid that awfulness. Mushrooms, you are the worst. If I wanted fungus, I would lick the floor of my gym's showers.

The lady's meal was similarly rife with dirty, earthy, rubbery mushrooms.

This place is lucky that I'm giving it 3.0. I picked the mushrooms out of my meal and begrudgingly choked it down. It wasn't that bad.

Also, ordered spring onion pancakes that really didn't work for me.

Having said all of that, I was the only white man in the place, so they clearly know what they're doing.

I went to The Good Kitchen with some friends last night looking for a nice Chinese meal. We all ordered a hot pot. One had the pork and bean curd (13.80) which looked like a gelatinous mess, she did not eat much of it. One had the fried bean curd and seafood which looked good (19.80). I had the vermicelli noodles and vegetables ($14.80) which came in a broth. It was nice but severely lacked flavour.

All in all an ok meal but I wouldn’t rush back and if I did maybe I would go with more people and order a few stirfry dishes instead as they are probably tastier.

Very disappointing quality of food and service. I have ordered a set lunch of $12.8, includes a corn soup, a piece of garlic bread, a plate of "Tasty" pork chop rice and a cup of tea. First it takes me 40 minutes to wait for the plate rice, then the pork chops are really tasty. 2 medium size pork chops with generous amount of rice, no fried onions or boiled frozen vegetables, too much sauce underneath the pork. The porks are tough, the knife is not sharp enough to cut it. I use force to tear them into several large pieces. Very strong smell of pig, I think they are not fresh, maybe frozen for decades, and that's why the chef use so much sauce tried to cover the smell and called it " Tasty". I don't want to get poison, I just pay and left. It is unbelievable I spent an hour to have a set lunch in a Hk style restaurant with such a worst quality! Will never go again!

Cleanliness is a low. Found insect in my drink. There r cockroaches crawling around the restaurant. The staff r clueless n don't wan to b there. Food used to b gd but it's gone downhill since the beginning of this year.

This is a typical kind of Hong Kong style cha chaan teng (cafe) which is right here in hurstville. They offer the full cha chaan teng works.. Breakfast sets, lunch, afternoon tea sets, and a range of Hong Kong style dinner dishes. I found it by chance, and I ordered the breakfast set with instant 'doll' noodles, ham sandwich, and ice coffee. Service is the usual abrupt and not so nice, but that's not what I came here for.. It's the value for money Hong Kong food, and experience.

Agree that it is as good as you get for Hong Kong cafe food. It clearly is a local favourite. We did stand out a bit not being from the area but we overcame the language barrier.

Zomato says $60 for 2 people - this will see you VERY well feed. For $60 we each had a soup (1 dumpling one pork & noodles - both are main sized serves) a pork dish and a prawn dish - again both very generous on size. And, rice.

Fortunately it's normal to ask for containers to take your remains home. We have plenty for dinner tomorrow night.

Other: booking not needed, BYO, cash only.

This is as good as you will get when it comes to "Hong Kong style" cafe food.
The decor may not be that inviting but all is made up with excellent food at great prices.
My personal favorite is the lunch special, I have Satay Chicken with flat fried rice noodle, served with an ice milk tea ($11). There's an assortment of dishes available on the lunch special board, however it's all written in Chinese, so you'll need to ask.
Breakfast is served up till 11.30am. The breakfast special is also great value, I have the chicken congee served with spring roll in steamed rice noodle. I can hardly finish it all, and it's great value at $8.50.
Another good special is the menu that offers two dishes, rice, soup and veg for $26. The soup is always quite plain, but the choice of dishes is vast. For example you can have whole flounder (steamed or fried), with salt and pepper calamari, with steamed rice and veg for around $13 per person !!!
I've had the oysters and lobster here once, and it's as good as you'll get anywhere, with the prices for those being standard.
As I say, if you are looking for a nice romantic experience with great decor....this isn't it. But for good food and a good price, it's hard to beat, even in Hurstville.

Definitely surprised by the food here. Don't judge a book by its cover. The food here was just fantastic. We usually come here during the day but we discovered the dinner set menus and it delivered alright. The XO crab with vermicelli was phenomenal as was the salt and pepper pork.

This steaming hot bowl of congee was GIGANTIC and this was no exaggeration. LeeLoo was the only diner and was doubting her ability to finish all of it because it was seriously fit to feed three mouths at least. However, being the beast that LeeLoo is at eating congee, she managed to finish all of it including all of the you tiao.

Overall at $15 total, I think its a bargain. When I’m not too hungry we just share a set and add an extra item. HK cafes don’t provide great service, so don’t expect any. They are efficient and value for money so you’re in and out in no time. They also do afternoon lunch specials for about the same price but with different lunch items such as baked pork chop on rice or pasta etc this is between 230 and 5.30pm however we have yet to visit as there are so many options for lunch in Hustville.

We went to this place (I think it was called The Good Kitchen - one of many restaurants that litter Forest Road) and had a set for two, where you got a choice of two dishes, rice, soup, dessert (this was just two miniscule pieces of coconut taro jelly) and a plate of choy for only $22! I couldn't resist and added a Hong Kong style milk tea (hot) for $2.80 to my meal and we both indulged in ordering an oyster ($2.80 each).

It's the sort of snack that would make Elvis go weak at the knees. Two slices of soft white bread are slapped together with peanut butter, dipped in egg and then pan-fried to a rich golden hue.

We find the world's finest hangover cure in The Good Kitchen, a Hong Kong coffee shop style Chinese restaurant in Hurstville. Hunting down treasure for our travel bookshop , excuse the plug, brings us to Hurstville on Saturday morning. We stumble upon a couple of Hong Kong cafe joints on Forrest Road. We love Hong Kong cafes for the cheery, busy vibe and eclectic mix of Chinese and Western dishes. The Good Kitchen takes us back to Hong Kong for just a little while. My hangover chooses to eat at The Good Kitchen because it offers Salty Beef and Egg Sandwich, $3.80. It comes out on super fresh thick Tip Top style white bread with the crusts cut off, now that's luxury. The innards are like a single egg omelette flecked with shards of beef, which tastes like corned beef. It tastes far better than it should. My hangover agrees. Iced Hong Kong Style Coffee - $3.20. It's authentic, which is good and bad, because Hong Kong coffee is bland and weak. I really should order milk tea instead. I nev

Great food and great value! Definitely coming back

Good Kitchen offers great Hong Kong cuisine at very good prices. My favourite breakfast meal is the Chicken Congee, accompanied by spring rolls with rice noodle ($8.50). For lunch I generally go for the Satay Chicken chow mein, with Ice Milk Tea ($10.50). For dinner, there's a great value dinner special menu. We often have the salt & pepper pork chop, or whole flounder, with another dish, accompanied by soup, rice and green veg, ($24.00 for two)
As I say......great value.

Hurstville's hidden gem.. Best cheap eats, bargain tea time special. Me and my friends, without fail beef brisket noodles and red bean. $7.50 can not be beaten. Friendly staff, usually quite busy but still quick service.
