Review Gurkhas Nepalese Restaurant - Kallaroo

I've had a couple of fantastic meals here. Last time with my wife we had the Momo chicken dumplings, Gurkhas Special Chicken Curry, Chicken Briyani and some Garlic Naan bread. All of these dishes were delicious. Both the Briyani and Curry had loads of delicious flavour with a decent hit of spicyness, without being overpowering. Will definitely be back.

Good food. No kids menu and no real desire shown to be flexible for them. Poor choice of drinks when we went with no beer available despite being opposite a bottle shop....food was good, but given we were the only people there, very slow.

First and last time for us. It was our wedding anniversary yesterday and we thought we would try a local restaurant, what a mistake. Food was terrible, no taste , no flavour just reheated food. Really a disappointing end to our special day.
Jared Herft
After eating here a few times through uber eats we had a terrible experience in which we charged for our meal, and then the order was cancelled. We rang the restaurant to be told that they are closed, we were given the managers mobile number which we called and were told to call the restaurant back to get the number for uber eats, we did, and were told to call the manager back as she is the only one with that information. After 10 or so times trying to call someone else answered the phone and said that the number I was calling was a private number that they were not the managers and that the manager was "someone else" and were unable to give me a contact number for this fictitious person. I was subsequently hung up on and will never be eating there again.

We placed an order for takeaway and when I arrived they had given my order to someone else. The person returned the order having opened the bag. The staff then proceeded to take the food and place it in a new bag and tried to get me to accept the food that someone else had taken home! I left without food and no apology. We will not be back.

Not to my liking for my first Takeaway here...... Long wait, Top takeaway price for Chicken Tikka Masala that lacked flavour........ Very surprised given some of the rave reviews.

Awesome dishes as usual love the chicken tikka masala and and all the starters are great- been coming for the last ten years and still as good as ever.
Debra Hughes
Food beautiful, staff super friendly, clean cosy and love the table cloths. Very authentic, I've been to Nepal. Momos are the BEST.

Have eaten here (Currumbine) many times, both as take away and dine in. The food has always been excellent. Beautiful meals always very tasty and really friendly staff. Love it, would definitely recommend the Lasun Chicken and Peshwari Naan!

Best food in High Wycombe. Living in High Wycombe can be depressing as there are no decent food outlets whatsoever (except the tavern for a pub meal), but now that We have this restaurant, we can finally be happy! No more travelling for a decent feed! I can't say enough good words. Lovely clean restaurant with accomodating and kind, friendly staff, prompt service, and quality food well done! We will be back, and back, and back
Gemma Bain
Wow!!!! Love love love their food, best take away in High Wycombe, highly recommended. So happy we finally have a decent place to eat and take away. Food is amazing!!!!! A must try!!!!

What can we say!!!!! Finally found a local Nepalese that's amazing and it's in our own suburb Currambine!!! Thanks for an amazing meal! Lamb khasiko was to die for........waitress was also lovely
Amy Crook
Fantastic food, one of the best curries I've ever eaten! Great value and lovely service.
Marie Re DiGiovanni
Best food, staff engaging and service very good.. I can highly recommend for something different.
Tracy Cromb
Shared two dishes with my daughter, Lamb Korma and Butter Chicken. Was delicious, however my only criticism would be, the meat and sauce ratio was not equal, not enough meat and too much sauce in each dish. Please add more meat!
Frank Anderson
Great food, great experience. I would certainly recommend this restaurant..

Twice this week!! Once you have a top notch curry house you don't go anywhere else. This is our whole family's go to curry restaurant. Food is second to none and consistently so... Staff are friendly and polite also!!
Elsa Evans
We've been quite a few times and never had a bad meal..very flavoursome and hard to choose as all the dishes are yummy..one of our favorite local restaurants.
Tina Ruse
Yummy food, lovely staff and cosy atmosphere. Will definitely be going again.

We've only had the 1 meal so far; great food best Curry in a very long time, the mixed grill is beautiful. So pleased you're just round the corner too. We will be back, a 5 then perhaps.

I went to this restaurant on a whim on a Saturday night. Fancying something a bit different from the usual Japanese, Chinese or fish and chips, I scoured Urbanspoon for something local and came across this restaurant. It is BYO and right next door to a bottleshop which is very convenient. The staff are gentle and welcoming, and the restaurant is modern with a clean, elegant ambience. The menu is unsurprisingly very similar to an Indian menu with the usual favourites like samosas, pakoras, tandoori etc.

Unfortunately, our meals were highly disappointing we received Chicken basati with three tiny pieces of chicken for $18, the yellow curry was more of boiled vegetables with a drop of sauce, no flavour besides spicy chilli even after requesting for mild. we waited 40 minutes being the only order for takeaway expecting it to be fresh and delicious...sad because we love to support our local restaurants but not worth it
Fiona
Average interior but nice enough for a quick casual meal with friends. We ordered lamb korma along with a tandoori dish, rice and naan bread. I wish we had ordered two curries because the lamb korma was amazing. The tandoori dish was unfortunately really salty and quite dry but we could luckily use the korma sauce to mask the saltiness. Overall really good meal!

The high score is for the delicious food and extremely friendly service. We ordered chicken momos, veg kormas and chicken rogan josh, all were amazing. The girl who waited our table was very attentive, always with a smile on her face.

The only thing to watch out for, is that we saw the restaurant owner/manager taking the tip we gave to the waitress and put it to the till. He did deduct the amount from our bill, but I personally believe it was very obvious that was the tip for the waitress. So we went to pay again the difference so the waitress can get the tip she deserves. Just be sure if you want to tip, that you give to them personally.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed the food so much we will surely be back! :)

This was the first time eating in and the food was exceptional. Lamb madras and the Gurkhas special goat curry were delicious! Highly recommend
Gary Connelly
Great food, friendly service but 2 people on the floor is not enough. I thought it was a one off but I have been told that is your normal staffing level. We had a table of 13 and the wait was too long. If I was at a table of 2 or 4 it would have been unbearable and we would have left. I'll be back when this aspect improves.
Phil
Usually pretty good although this time we were very disappointed.
Got notified it was 40 minutes for pick up therefore came down 50minutes later just in case to have them say it wasn't ready for another 10minutes.
After a further 20 minutes delay, our order was finally ready.
We took it home and the food was not even fresh after the long wait. It was as if everything had been sitting in the kitchen the whole time just "sweating" in the take away packaging.
Grilled meats and lamb were dry, chicken lollipops and garlic naan bread gone cold, the rice was dry and the other dishes under lukewarm.
The only decent thing was the papdums.
Very dissatisfied meal for $100 especially the lack of freshness even with the extra wait.
PerthfectBreakfast
Great neighborhood gem. Friendly service, complimentary pappadams on arrival. We ordered chicken momos, chicken lasun (mild chicken coconut curry), veg korma, rice, garlic naan, cheese naan, rice and sweet lassis.

I really liked the momos and would definitely come back for those! The veg korma was way too sweet and I wouldn't order again. First time I've had cheese naan and it was AMAZING.

25% off with the entertainment book too!
Rose
This local restaurant served delicious food, its cheap and cheerful, BYO. The chicken madras and goat curry were my favourite as the chicken lollipops.
Jess Ditotto
My dad and I ventured here one night spontaneously and were pleasantly suprised. Complimentary pappadums on arrival, the curries were beautiful, fast service and lovely attentive staff. We will definitely be back.
The only negative was that the restaurant was hidden away next to a shop in the dark. It felt a bit dodgy until you venture inside the restaurant.
Andy
Butter chicken all the way. Hands down the best I've had north of the river. Smokey and sweet with a good hit of spice available on request. It is the perfect takeaway curry. Pilau rice and garlic naans also deserve praise.
Natalie Rose Reynolds-Borg
Nice environment, staff were friendly and knowledgeable about menu. Byo option $2.50 per head. Complimentary papadums and tap water on arrival. Ordered across the menu, enjoyed Nepalese prawns, chicken vindaloo a little tame in heat and depth considering my husband requested "I like it Hot" . Saag paneer was a little bland and cream based.
Would perhaps try different dishes take away.
Pleasant outing. Family of 4 $105

Without a doubt the best little restaurant! Last night 13 of us enjoyed the beautiful hospitality from the team at Gurkhas, our group had the banquet menu for $40 where we could eat as much as we liked from delicious momos to butter chicken and devine garlic naan. We're so lucky to live a five minute walk away from this place they have just the best Nepalese food and the best service. Thank you!!!!

First time I visited this place! I was mesmerised. I love the food, we ordered momo for entrée, goat curry, tandoori chicken, nan bread and rice for main! It was amazing! Serving is way too much for 2 people. Good service and the place is very clean!! Definitely will come back again.

I had my first meal at this place last night & it was fantastic. Great little restaurant tucked away in the suburbs. Great service & a nice relaxed atmosphere

Amazing food, excellent service, reasonable prices and such a nice ambience! We tried it for the first time for a quiet family dinner and had a lovely night. Two of our family are vegans and the staff were so accommodating and helpful. The chefs even especially made a fresh roti batter that was vegan. All the food was absolutely beautiful and fresh. The staff were attentive and friendly and the restaurant was nicely decorated and very clean. Would definitely recommend!

Been here once on a whim and was so impressed with the food, seems very authentic. Meat was so tender and flavoursome. will definitely come back. Unexpectedly nicely decorated inside, with white tablecloths. BYO as well. Very inviting.

Always good food,I have been going there from when they opened. Always good service and awesome food. Favourites are chilli chicken, lamb mono, chicken tikka masala, casi co choyla is amazing. Strong garlic and coriander flavours

Lovely family owned business. Excellent service, we go quite often and they remember our names and give us the same table each time. Lovely people, always come up to chat with us. The beef vindaloo is very good, very hot but nice and tasty. They even make dishes less spicy for children if you ask them.It is tucked away in small suburban Kallaroo but is definitely worth it. Perfection.

Haven't been to Gurkhas for a while. The food seems better. Had a great night, wife and I with two good friends. We shared Momo (steamed dumplings filled with chicken) and three curries. Loved the Momo. All the curries were good: Fish Masala (mild), Black Pepper Duck (mild), beef vindaloo (hot). My favourite was the vindaloo - plenty of chili (a bit too hot for two of our party but they make the curries as hot as you want them, to order, within reason). Pulau rice was a bit on the dry side, the garlic naan was good but a tad chewy. The service was excellent, friendly and helpful. The restaurant was quite busy but there were no delays or mistakes. We really enjoyed it and will definitely go back. It's good to have somewhere local to go.

Great flavours hit the right note for me, enjoyed Korma Chicken and sweet nan bread, attentive and helpful staff, loved the interior also. Situated in small Kallaroo shop centre.

Amazing food and experience!. This is a local restaurant for us but if it were located elsewhere it would be well worth the travel. Delicious Nepalese/Indian food. Flavours and service are spot on. The only thing that could be improved is to have a couple of tea lights on the table for a bit more ambiance.

This is the only restaurant in perth that I have been delighted with every aspect of the meal and service.

10 out of 10

Delicious. Just finished scoffing our take-away order from Gurkhas and were so impressed I had to write a review immediately. Every single dish we ordered was great. We had the garlic naan, lamb momo, samosas, lamb madras, chicken rogan josh and chicken poleko. Ok some of these dishes are fairly standard fare but it's rare for me to order so many dishes and be pleased with all of them. The chicken poleko was probably the stand out as it is not something you see on every menu and it was delightful. The lamb madras was not as hot (spicy) as expected but tasted great all the same. Will definitely be returning to Gurkhas. When you want a good quality, tasty feed, this is your place.

Amazing in all aspects!!. 6 of us went last night and all of us were very impressed! Food was amazing and the staff there were also super friendly. We had about 8 dishes between us and there was much more food than we expected, great sized servings and all were full of flavour! prices are also really good. I really can't wait to go again!!

Fabulous Meal. We have just had one of the best Nepalese meals in Perth. Not only was the food terrific but the service was excellent.
Compliments to the Manager and the Chef for looking after us. We will definitely return for more Nepalese food experiences.

Always yummy!. Been here many times now and it never disappoints! The lamb rogan josh is my favourite but I haven't ever ordered a dish that I didn't like. My only criticism is their use of chicken thigh instead of breast in the chicken curries (namely the saag and butter chicken). If they could use breast meat I would give it 10/10!

Wheres the sauce???. Wouldn't eat here again...we gave them a second chance after the first time was a bland experience. this time we got take away and we ordered black pepper beef which was supposed to come with a homemade black pepper sauce (which i would expect homemade)
but there was none to be seen and the beef was dry and bland. we also ordered chicken poleko BBQ with a typical Nepali sauce on the side although the chicken was delicious but there was no sauce on the side :( so at this point we have a tub of plain rice, 3 garlic naan and no sauce.

we phoned up to find out where the sauce was? only to be told sorry that's how it comes and we can come get our sauce next time we order. so i have no sauce this time and ill have too much sauce next time, maybe i can save all the naan and plain rice for then...extremely dissapointed

Melt in Your Mouth Naan Bread to Soak with Korma Gravy. Cooked the authentic nepalese way.

Thank you for making me and my little girl feel so welcome, your food is absolutely wonderful and the service was fantastic! We will definitely be back at your restaurant, keep up the great work, guys and girls...

This restaurant is the business!!! They can cook meat like no other Indian restaurant I know. You have to try the lamb cutlets and the poleko chicken. I normally like curry with sauce but I can eat these dishes no problem, they are amazing. Also if you are gluten free they are more than accommodating. You won't be disappointed if you try this place. The food is great and so is the service!! Best curry in Perth.

Just moved to area.Big fan of this place. Not a fan of indian food, but that Nepalise menu is great.Best chicken, dumplins. Even green salad tastes great. Good prices for best food in town...

Went New Years Eve 2013. Fantastic service. Amazing food. Romantic. Highly recommended.
MonaLisa
Very average. All 3 curry dishes (Butter chicken, Prawns Malawari and Paneer Makhni) tasted the same, all tomato based, bland and not spicy at all. Naan bread was quite sweet. Too expensive for takeaway, $20.50 for butter chicken and about $15 for vegetarian dishes! Only positive are the generous portions. After two attempts will not be back
Juney
Excellent meal. Had a beautiful meal tonight with friends, wonderful food excellent service will certainly be back. June Tom Ian & Sue.

Must visit!!. Fourth time we have been to Ghurkhas in the last few month. One of my favourite restaurants! Delicious food, good variety to choose from, good prices, large portions - the four of us usually only order 3 dishes and with the Naan or Rotti its quite sufficient - if we also have Momo, chicken or Lamb for starters (must try) and a Desert (I like the rice pudding) then the belt needs loosening!
If you like something a bit spicy Ghurkhas will not disappoint.

Amazing food!. Great food and excellent hospitality! Currently my favourite restaurant in Perth!

Led by the favourable reviews on urbanspoon we headed to Gurkhas for dinner. It wasn't much to look at from the outside, but once inside we were pleasantly surprised. Very friendly staff, nice lighting and ambience....interesting looking menu. Unfortunately the food just wasn't good. The momos we ordered for entree were tasty but luke warm and stodgy, the snapper main was mushy and tasteless, the chef recommended lamb shank was more like mutton dressed as lamb and disappointing. We won't be going back
Susan Petersen
Pleasantly surprised with the fantastic flavours and attentive table service. Love the white linen table clothes ! Thoroughly recommend this quiet surburban secret. We will be going back :)

I usually don't take the time to write reviews but this restaurant ticked all the boxes for us. Intimate atmosphere, very nice service and excellent food. I am a big fan of the butter chicken, I always try it whenever we go and this one was to die for. We also have grilled chicken and it was so yummy!! Even the aloo paratha was divine. We'll be back!

Food Dude. Hands down best Indian/Nepalese style restaurant in Perth. Better than Tendulkar's favourite. Mind blowing flavours, great service.

MiTho (Tasty Delicious Food). Really enjoyed our meal at Gurkhas Nepalese Restaurant at Kallaroo. Having just returned from Nepal it made me long to return. Wonderful service from our waiter Bishel. Definitely worth checking this place out.

Amazing Food!. Have not had a bad meal from this restaurant!

Love the butter chicken and lamb shanks!
Ziva
Delicious and authentic food.
IMONGRY
The Tandoori Mix Grill consisted of Chicken Tikka, Lamb Tikka, Tandoori Chicken, King Prawn and Shish Kebab all of which were spicy, tender and flavoursome with a slight hit of smokiness from being cooked over coals. This was an absolute winner for me and I will definitely be ordering this dish again. The only let down was that where the dish claims to have King Prawn it literally means you only receive one.

The Butter Chicken was also outstanding and contained a more than generous amount of tender juicy breast meat. Yes, I said tender breast meat, it’s amazing how many restaurants are unable to achieve this, so hats off to Gurkhas. The Garlic Naan was flawless in both flavour and texture also.

I really hope this restaurant doesn’t change a thing from what they are doing now...

Definitely recommend this place and look forward to returning soon.

Worth a visit, But!!!. Our new favourite restaurant, , tasty foods reasonable price, BYO, nice ambience. Check it out!
I think the only flaw is the attentiveness of the staff, the last couple of times there, we had to get up a few times to gain their attention to attend to us. Don't get me wrong, the staff are very friendly but really need better restaurant service skills.
Carole Plumb
Great for vegetarians!. We had an enjoyable evening at Gurkhas. Although I am a pescetarian, I really enjoy vegetarian food and I was pleased with the choice on offer at Gurkhas. I chose the roasted soy bean starter, which was delicious (even my meat eating husband enjoyed this) and there were plenty of lentil based dishes on the menu. My husband loved his spicy lamb shanks and all were good sized meals. It's not too expensive, although not a cheap option, and well worth a visit. It's BYO too so all good. We'll be eating there again.
Elaine
Just love it. We have been three times since Gurkhas opened and love it .Smashing curries, super service .Call me old fashioned but I also like the crisp linen table cloths and napkins.

Great food! Reasonably priced.. Lamb sekuwa grilled over charcoal was fabulous, mixed tandoori grill very tasty.Loved the Nepali Palau rice and goat curry. So many interesting dishes I am looking forward to return. Service was friendly and attentive, great to see crisp linen tablecloths and napkins.
