Had a wonderful, relaxed lunch on busy Sunday afternoon. Accommodated our group of 5 despite us being late for our booking (Thanks!!). Had a great spot by the wood fire. Enjoyed the food, drinks and friendly wait staff. Definitely worth a return visit to this beautiful spot!!
Beautiful outlook and the best Chai latte I’ve ever had! Thai beef salad fragrantly marinated in a secret spice mix. Very fresh and tasty!
Service fantastic and attentive.
Oh and gluten free too!

On our way through to Sugarloaf Reservoir, we stopped for an ale and a wine then added some hot chips to line the belly. Never can be too careful with alcohol and driving these days.
Dark Horse has reincarnated an old establishment into a must visit place for the country culinary diner. The lovely drive from the east out through the long, leisurely gentle windy roads to this ‘one off’ cafe/store starts when you enter and greeted by the staff. They’ve been trained well or perhaps recruited well. Friendly, helpful and nothing too much trouble. We decided to sit up at a barrel on stools as we knew we’d only be an hour however, there is a variety of places to eat within Dark Horse. Indoors, outdoors, covered, uncovered, on large dining tables for 10 or at a couple of comfy couches indoors.
Menu is simple but interesting and there is something for everyone including the kids.
As well as somewhere to eat and drink, Dark Horse has an array of local produce for sale and I’d recommend you check out what’s on offer. The wine selection on display is certainly worth a look.
This place reminded me of Merricks Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula - without the expensive price tag and snobbery.
There also was a lovely young woman playing live music for patrons - good sound and not intrusive on our conversation.
Note: wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Good parking. Network on Telstra was 1 bar and no bars for Optus however, you can ask for the wifi password.
Went here after visiting kinglake & we were starving. We both got the big breakfast & definitely made us full afterwards. The mushrooms were nice and buttery, the bacon was cooked just right & the hash brown was golden and heavenly 😍. The lady who served us was really nice. They let us take our time to order & the food didn’t take too long for it to come out.
The food at the Dark Horse is tasty and beautifully prepared. The Middle Eastern eggs dish is divine but there are plenty of other lovely dishes too. The staff are friendly and the setting amongst the gums is truly beautiful. I often go there with family and friends and have always loved it!
Lovely spot for a cup of coffee and scones especially in winter! They have the Coonara blazing on the patio which makes it a a very inviting space to enjoy your food. Staff are lovey and attentive.
Great food, great staff, had live music this afternoon. Really set the ambience. Lovely cafe in the heart of kangaroo ground. Must visit with your family or friends!
Had a lovely relaxing breakfast here a few weeks ago! Food was good, house made baked beans were SO tasty, really liked them, recommend!! Eggs cooked perfectly, portions were good, would have just liked a piece of bread per egg!😅 Staff were attentive and the atmosphere and scenery is beautiful, nice place to spend the morning!
Went on Sunday lunch , we had the big breakfast, a pasta , chai tea and hot chocolate. Very friendly staffs and great view . Although it was cold today but still very soothing sitting outside. Very quiet and relax . The staff even serve the milk to go with my tea warm , and when our food was served. The plate was warmed . It's very considerated. The bacon & hush brown, fresh bread with scrambled egg are Fantastic! It did took a while for waiting our food to be served , but its definitely a great cafe with good food . It's is not a 4,I don't know what would be . 😄love this place .
A wonderful find out in the Yarra Valley region. We usually travel through this area when heading out to Healesville and have passed this cafe a few times. We are so glad we stopped and went in for some breakfast! It is so welcoming and cosy. They had the fire going and it was lovely and warm inside. We ordered the Brioche French toast and the Baked Middle eastern eggs. Both were very delicious and had wonderful flavours. The coffee was great. They have their own blend and it was really good.
They have a fantastic outdoor area. Great views and a lovely little pond. It is a very relaxing and beautiful area. We loved visiting this cafe and look forward to going back again soon.
I had a lovely afternoon tea her with my mum. We had arancini, carrot cake, tea and coffee. Everything was delicious! The girl who served us was so kind and we loved sitting outside with the fresh air and view of the trees. It was a nice change from the tiny cafes in our area. Thank you Dark Horse.
A great atmosphere with even better food and service. So relaxing to sit outside with a coffee and take in the view. Their coffee is the best. Can't wait to bring my friends and family here!
Lots of seating options and space inside and out. The food and service was delightful. Fresh and delicious produce.
Delightful place!
We happened upon this cafe as we were driving back to Melbourne from a week away. My partner needed his coffee fix and I was craving a hot chocolate (and a toilet break 😝) and we saw the Dark Horse on the road and pulled in. Heaps of easy to manoeuvre parking, toilets were clean and accessible and the service was beyond amazing. There was one particular lady (I don't remember her name, my apologies) who went above and beyond. Have never felt more welcome! 😊
A picturesque and wonderfully warm and friendly little place to either grab a quick coffee or sit and enjoy a long lunch overlooking a pretty little lake. Cannot recommend highly enough!👌
Great location, Smashed avo and Fries was amazing. Vegetarian Burger 🍔 was yum 🤤 never had that good vegetarian Burger ever.Excellent service, Super friendly staff, great coffee & Vegan Brownie 😋. Thank you girls for making my unplanned & first visit marvellous.
Brilliant location, brilliant food, brilliant service! What more could you ask for? Just a 40 min drive from Melbourne, nestled among the hills and lush greenery, this place offers sole great food options with super friendly staff. Highly recommended on its own or even as a pit stop enroute to some of the other destinations further on.
One of the best breakfast I've ever had. Excellent customer service and great atmosphere. Thank you to all the staff for making my experience, one that I will never forget. I highly recommend this cafe!
