Review Sinma Laksa House - Kingsford

Food is authentic and tasty. The Combination noodles were a mix of horfun and vermicelli. Loved the 'wok hei' (smoky fragrance). The turnip cake tastes good. Teh tarik was ok. Rojak was so so. I have tasted better ones.

As a local. I've been here plenty of times but the best highlight is 2010 Chinese New Year. We tried a lot of variety of foods they can offer & it was very tantalising. The gravied noodles are my top pick.

Fantastic!!! Delicious traditional Singaporean food and great value for money. By far the best chilli crab we've found in Sydney - just as good as Singapore, if not better! The customer service was outstanding, Sharon made us feel at home and we'll definitely be back again soon. Thanks for a great night guys!

Very disappointed, heard so much about this place from other fellow Malaysians and Singaporeans. Quality of all dishes were poor, terribly bland and crazily expensive. Even the teh tarik had minimal flavour.

It is one of those run - down looking restaurant but serves really yummy dishes! Good food but no presentation whatsoever, the only thing that they can't do, is coffee !

The Singaporean chilly crab is the best dish! One crab is almost 2kgs! Amazing sauce! The restaurant decoration is old and it locates in the middle of construction site. A nice place to try singaporean dishes!

A very nice malay/Singaporean mix food. Friendly service, nice food, reasonable price. Recommended.

Extremely good Singaporean crab! The fried bun that we had with the crab was crispy, fresh and delicious.

I have been to this restaurant for many years. It has never failed to provide great and authentic Singaporean and Malaysian food. For dishes, dont miss the Singapore chilli crab - the best in town. On my list to order include butter prawns, sambal okra, kung po chicken, braised pig trotters, and many others. For hawker favourites the Penang char kway teow is hard to beat. Others include KL Hokkien mee, combination chow hor fun, nasi lemak, laksa, satay, etc.

I always love their food. They are so authentic, particularly in the stir fried food. Prawn Har Mian, Hainanese chicken and Kang Kong are my favoriate picks.

Food was dismal and prawns were not fresh. Expensive too; will not be coming back. We use to be regulars here.

If you can get past the odd location, make peace with the 70's decor, the plastic wrap over the top of the table cloths, the pictures of dishes that are taped down beneath that plastic wrap, then you're in for a treat.

In my opinion they have the best Roti in town, accompanied by a choice of truly excellent lamb, chicken and beef curries. Order their Roti Chanai as an entree and you won't be disappointed. Or order 2 servings and have it as a main.

Their Prawn meals are unusual and delicious, with their Butter Prawns & Oatmeal Prawn being of exceptional quality.

They keep fresh (living) mud crabs on site and their Singapore Chilli Crab is excellent. The prices are fair for mud crab too, usually around $80-90 per kg which is as cheap as you'll pay for Mud Crab in specialised Crab Shack Restaurants.

Their Sambal & Satay offerings are competent.

And of course their Laksa. Sadly I am not a fan of Penang style Laksa, there's nothing objectively wrong with it I just prefer different styles that have a thicker, creamier coconut broth and a softer chilli palate.

Their Gado Gado is a good refreshing side to accompany any of their dishes.

Also for dessert make sure you order their Ais Kacang, it's a shaved ice, syrups, coconut cream, jelly, red beans, sweet corn, etc. I prefer mine without the Red Bean as it gives it a bready texture.

This laksa house at the bottom of now non exsistin round about is all about fast and cheap.
The food here is good and satisfying. My favourite thing to order here is the seafood laksa. I just love the concoction of the creamy curry soup, the mix of bee hoon and egg noodles and the hunting for all the seafood.
The service is rather erratic and they seem understaffed but you'll eventually get served. If you can overlook the lacklustre decor and lack of service, the food makes up for it.

Great street food, very inexpensive. Authentic flavors. Definitely will be going back. We had the beef rebdang and the chicken and potato curry, felt like we were eating in Malaysia or Indonesia.

Loved my meal here! Had the Fried Bee Hoon with vegetables. Came out quick and tasted very fresh. Service was very friendly. Will be returning soon.

Another Malaysian-Singaporean food institution. There are more misses than hits here. I am intrigued by how food institutions brand their food as authentic. I tried their version of chicken satay, Teh Tarik and Nasi Goreng. As mentioned in previous posts, chicken satays in Singapore and Malaysia taste so juicy, tender and succulent because the hawkers/chefs add chicken fat cubes with marinated chicken thigh before they are grilled over charcoal/electric grill. They are not just sticks of dry and tasteless chicken breast meat!!

This place is near where I live. Some of my favourite from this place are, Nasi Goreng Kampong, Fried Turnip Cake, Fried Kway Teo. Personally, I love their Fried Turnip Cake. I have never tried a turnip cake as great as them. Serving size is great. Service is friendly. Plenty of place to sit too.

Food wasn't too bad but service wasn't great. They took a long time to take our order and then took even longer for the food to come out.
Food came out sparingly and one dish came out after we had all finished eating all of the other plates.
Restaurant wasn't great looking, looked a bit dirty.
Is quite far from where we live and a bit pricey on some dishes.
Probably wouldn't go back again.

Singaporean mud crab was divine. We also had chicken satay sticks and chao kwai tieu which were both very average. The prices were very reasonable with most dishes in the $10-$20 mark with the exception of mud crab which was crazy expensive. We got free red bean soup and fruit as a complimentary dessert which was nice. The last time I visited this joint a few years ago it was packed out but tonight it was fairly empty I'm guessing because they jacked up the mud crab prices so dearly.

Dinner cost $300 (although admittedly we ordered a lot and there was 8 of us), the restaurant was freezing and the food was average. Nothing incredible but definitely not bad. HOWEVER, my whole family got severe food poisoning! I have never been so sick in my life, and I was concerned when I walked past the kitchen to go to the bathroom and saw raw chicken just sitting around and the kitchen was quite dirty.
Frank
Run down and kinda grubby but damn do they make an awesome combination kway teow. So saucy so good. The Har mee is not bad either.

Not as cheap as some of the other Malaysian joints in the area but great tasty food.

We are here last night for Chinese new year. We ordered 15 dishes, all of them were good to excellent. The dishes were authentic and tasty, without being too heavy or greasy. In particular, the butter egg crab, oat prawn, sambal petai, satay and char koay teow were excellent. Even the lime juice was perfect, just like in Malaysia! This was the best malaysian meal I have had in Sydney, and I have lived here for a while!
Service was good, especially given how few staff they had, the staff who served us was very helpful, patient and efficient. Thank you!

Please wait, order, eat, pay and GTFO.

Went here (accidentally) for Chinese New Year's Eve, or as they presumably call it: New Year's Eve. I had not booked, but luckily there was a table next to a dirty, yet uninhabited aquarium, adjacent to the cathode ray TV and a plastic-vacuum-sealed religious icon.

The ambiance was not exactly exciting.

I ordered chicken laksa and (at the behest of the lady) salt and pepper tofu to share . Thankfully, the tofu was deep-fried and had sort of onion-chilli dry-relish, so it was much better than expected, like a chick-flick by Judd Apatow.

The laksa looked beautiful. The size of a kiddie pool and filled with yumminess...however I was slightly disappointed.

Laksas are supposed to be a rich blend of flavours, but it was a bit too heavy. There wasn't any freshness or bite to it. The balance was off, like a one-legged man with an inner-ear infection. The chicken was hit-and-miss too, with some bits tender and succulent, while others were overcooked. No mint. No veggies at all.

The lady's vegetarian laksa tasted and looked better, surprisingly.

I should point out that I still ate the entire bowl, so it certainly wasn't bad. And the bill for two people was $34, so the value is certainly there.

The service is difficult to judge. The wait to be noticed at the front reception/back counter was too long, the staff always seemed busy, we were not given enough time to look at the menus initially and then ignored after that. Staff members were pleasant though.

Also, the tabletops were laminated advertisements for a driving school. Not sure why a restaurateur would do this.

I had an EXTREMELY UNPLEASANT family dinner experience at your restaurant this evening. Please ask your restaurant manager to contact me ASAP otherwise I will come in to speak to higher management directly or lodge a formal complaint to Consumer Affairs.

I have been to Sinma Laksa house a number of times, it was just for the Singaporean Chilli crab...that's it and that is the only main reason I shall head back. It's not for the decor of the restaurant, not for the average service and not for the other dishes (we had always ordered other main meals but they were ok, nothing to brag about) their sauce for the crab is just mouthwatering with just the right spiciness, best to eat the leftover sauce with their steamed buns.

The Penang Char Kway Tiao was a winner! It was not too oily and was slightly charred as it should be. The Chicken Satay with rice cakes was a delight with a generous serving of delicious peanut sauce. However, the Nasi Lemak was not the best I've had, and the Teh Tarik was definitely underwhelming. It was not sweet at all and was too light for my liking.
Sinma Laksa House looks like an old school cafeteria. Located nearby a giant round about in Kingsford, it's a very casual eat. It's nice and consistent. It's quite fun to eat in a big group around their big round tables. I dined with a group of people so we had platters of food so the plates are quite big. If you are allergic to shell fish, you will struggle with most of the dishes at Sinma Laksa House. Luckily for me, I'm not allergic! A main will cost you about $15. The salt and pepper calamari was delicious, light and with a very slight touch of chili which is perfect for me. The platters of satay chicken skewers served with onion. cucumber and little blocks of rice were good. My friend and I agreed that the almond prawn dish looked fabulous but didn't quite bring the taste element to the table. It was just a bland prawn dish in the end. I love prawns though. The beans were covered in 'shrimp' paste which were not bad either. Give Sinma Laksa House a go if you're in the area and after a casual eat.

Sinma Laksa House has a very nice Singapore Chilli Crab. Is it worth the value? It would if the restaurant and waitresses were nicer. The rest of the dishes were also nice and presentable. The crab and barramundi contributed to 2/3 of the total bill!

AWESOME and one of the cheapest place in Sydney to get abit of your Singaporean chilli crab cravings!!! The place doesn’t look too clean or too nice…reminds me abit of Malaysia or Singapore actually…Service of course is not the ‘ fine dining ’ experience…but the food is great!! I LOVE their Singaporean chilli crab, with the fried buns “man tou”. Their other dishes are quite authentic too… When I feel like Singaporean chilli crab, that’s always the place I go… Eastern suburbs Select Eastern suburbs

In celebrating Belle’s graduation at UNSW, we decided to eat somewhere close by after her graduation ceremony. We were craving Singaporean and Malaysian food.

Seafood laksa was so-so So excited to see char kuey kak. Had good wok hei, too. This plate of Hokkien noodles was too much for one person really... Rojak to share, so-so as well Service was quick, maybe because we were the only ones there and it was nearly closing time. Situated in an area with a large population of university students from UNSW, p

The vibe is cheap and cheerful plus tablecloths. Today it's made extra special by the large tables of extended Singaporean\Malaysian families chatting and chowing down

Smothered in spicy sambal sauce, a ray wing is grilled to a brown burnish and served simply with more chilli sauce. The stingray texture is like that of most flat fish: soft and smooth with easily manageable bones, while the sambal and chilli provide all the flavour and heat that's needed.

Ok food, but chaos on a Sunday night. Arrived at 7.30pm on a Sunday night, place was crowded and no clean table in sight with only 2 wait staff who were rushing around. Waited for 10 mins before catching waitress' eye & she continued to ignore us until we went up to ask for table to be cleaned. Food itself was hit and miss, sambal prawn was quite tasty but blacan kangkung was too salty and sweet, and steamed rice was undercooked. I feel I should give this place a second chance - but maybe not anytime soon.

Cheap bland food. We had dinner there for my Uncle's birthday. The service was good, but the food was so disappointing. My partner and I had the laksa and roti canai with chicken curry. To share with the family we also had the satay chicken with peanut sauce. The portion size of the individual meals are big and perfect for sharing. The laksa didn't have much flavour and the chicken pieces were dry and chewy. The roti was freshly made and hot when it was brought to our table. It had a nice crunch and it was soft at the same time. The chicken curry served with it didn't look attractive and appetizing :( There was one chicken drumstick and looks like the meat has completely fallen off the bone and they've just topped it with all this chunks of the chicken pieces. The curry sauce was just bland, oily and very watery. The satay chicken skewers came in 6 and along with are diced cucumbers, onions and some sort of sticky rice cake pieces and the peanut sauce. The chicken on the skewers were tiny and thin and some were dry. The peanut sauce tasted ok. It was very texturized with heaps of peanuts, which I reckon overpowered the sauce, because the sauce was just thin and watery. My partner also had their Teh Tarik iced drink. It was not too sweet and it was refreshing.

DODGY AS! Called up and asked if they had a 1kg crab, they said yes. (We were cautious as the last two times went, they said their smallest was a 1.8kg crab). Arrived there half an hour later, they said their smallest was a 1.4kg crab. We were willing to take it as long as they showed us the scales. No matter what we said, they wouldn't show us. They were saying it was busy when the restaurant was pretty much empty. Be prepared to be ripped off and be spoken to with attitude (or just ask to see the scales before they tell you the weight x 0.5).

Poor service, unacceptable wait, and oily food. We ordered the turnip cake, belacan kangkung, and kung po chicken. We waited for more than half an hour to be served with the turnip cake and belacan kangkung, and the kung po chicken came about 15 minutes later.

The turnip cake was wet, lacked charred-ness (no "breath of the wok") and the portion was smaller for the same price. We asked for the turnip cake to be extra spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all. The belacan kangkung was way too salty and way too oily,

We finished the two dishes, and asked the waitstaff whether or not the kung po chicken was ready; we wanted to cancel the order if it wasn't ready, but the waitstaff told us it's nearly ready. She then presented the kung po chicken to us, telling us with a flourish "it's worth waiting (for)".

The kung po chicken consisted of lots of dried chillies, chicken, and onion swimming in oil and alcohol, with a small dish of flamed alcohol in the middle of the oil concoction. What purpose did a dish of flamed alcohol serve? Did we have to dip the pieces of oily chicken into the alcohol to "burn" away the excess oil (haha, pun intended), or did we have to down the alcohol like a vodka shot?

No, no, no, the kung po chicken was not worth the wait; in fact, the entire meal was not worth the wait. We occasionally dine at Sinma; in the past the quality of food is inconsistent. This time however, the food and service are acceptable; we won't be going back in a hurry.

Very poor service! We ordered fish and almost waited half hour, then the waitress came to tell the fish has run out and asked for change dish! Won't come back again.
Shahabjalaly
Bad service, no one speaks English had to wait 15 minutes for a simple order which they totally forgot about it and asked me to come back, I only had 45min lunch break. Very rude staff no one was paying attention to clients instead the front person was having her own lunch while serving others.

Customer service is bad. Prawn noodle and nasi goreng and laksa is not nice. The sambal kang kong is ok
Foodie
Bad customer service & dishes are below average. We were there with family and ordered a few dishes to share. We are Malaysian and we do seek out Malaysian restaurants. We ordered the chicken rice wasn't very tasty, the rice itself was tasteless. Assam fish which was meant to be one of the 'favourites' or best sellers was bland with a tint of sour... it was strange to be honest. Teh Tarik was also tasteless, quite disappointed as we have been there before and didn't remember it being like this, it wasn't always amazing food but this is definitely not worth anyone bragging about.

Service was terrible, they seem to be quite unorganised, certain dishes came quite late in our dining time, asked them for some forks and spoons for serving and they kept forgetting. They served us a dish and we asked what it was, and he simply replied "Its what you ordered right?". The dish wasn't exactly obvious... it was meat smothered with sauce.. so??

At the end of our meal, one of the waiters said he will clear up all the used dishes and he will bring us complimentary dessert. Then he asked one of our guests on the table if we had crabs, we said no we didn't, and then he retracted and said we won't be having complimentary dessert as that is only for customers that order crabs. I'm not sure about you, but this is pretty bad form if you ask us.

Awesome Singapore Food! 2 Thumbs Up !. This restaurant was recommended by my Singaporean classmate who mentioned that the food is quite authentic. After being away from home (Singapore) for several months, I decided to this restaurant a shot today. I was a happy camper :) The Penang Char Kway Tiao is authentic, accompanied with free sambal chili, the portion is pretty big with reasonable price. Highly recommended :)

EXCELLENT!!!. Don't know what everyone is talking about. After reading all the reviews here, I was sceptical, but decided to try it out myself. Service is absolutely fine, they greet you with a smile, take you to your table, get your order and bring out the food. What more is there?!

Plus the food...one of the best asian food experiences of my life! Service is good, food is GREAT! Try it, you won't regret it.
Sushi Man
Horrible Service !!!. The service is so POOR especially the boss. Food was ok but crab is very pricey !!!
Ray
Food completely not up to standard. Poor service and cleanness is an issue too. Sorry to say. Very poor
Darren
Cheap n' Tasty. I took my family for dinner to Sinma while on holiday in Sydney. The restaurant is basic no frills decor typical of asian eateries where focus is on reasonably priced, quality asian food. We ordered fried kuay teow, chicken rice, radish cake and ho fun. Service was prompt and the waitress was friendly and polite. The portions were both generous and delicious. It was so good we returned there again the next day for lunch and had an equally enjoyable eating experience. This place is on my favorites list for whenever I am in Sydney again.

As noted, on many reviews, food is good. However that's about it. And certainly not good enough to warrant the service quality.
Must admit, both crap experiences were at closing time when they shut the lights on us while we were eating!!!!!!!!! First time was New Year's Eve, so I figured maybe they really want to celebrate. Second time same thing, unbelievable. If they wanted us to leave on time they should have flagged that to us, before we sat down. I would have been more than accommodating. Not the way to end a $150+ dining experience.

Best chilli crab in Sydney. Singaporean by birth, I have quested my whole 25 years in Sydney to find a good chilli crab which compares to the dishes I have every time I go back to Singapore to visit.

Sinma is it!! The chilli crab here is amazing, the meat fresh and crunchy, with the tomato-chilli gravy just the right consistency and salty / sweet flavour afficionados know and love. Very generous serving of gravy too, which can be mopped up with excellent fried or steamed bread (man tou).

The other dishes here are also excellent, including the char kway teow and the cereal prawns. Highly recommended.

Every dish was fantastic!! Can't wait to come back. My new face restaurant....best crab I've had. Recommend the symbol Kung koong; butter calamari; kong po chicken in taro basket!
Marcus
Food equals the service. Average. As a fan of Malaysian and Singaporean food I am dissapointed. I've eaten here five or six times, but my experience today was so poor I felt compelled to write a review.

This place has never been great, but today was just awful. Yes the service was poor, but it always has been. Let's talk about food.

Ordered Penang Koay Teow, which lacked flavour. Mostly noodles, bean sprouts and a strong garlic taste, but little other flavours. Seafood Mee Goreng was too salty, had little seafood and also missed the mark. Kankung is one of those dishes they should get right, but again too salty and covered in sauce. I eat kankung once a week, and this was the worst I ever had.

You're much better going to Mamak for Malaysian. A previous writer thought Mamak was more expensive, but I would argue its cheaper and better quality. Sinma charged me $14.80 for the kankung, so I wouldn't say this place is cheap either.

Summary: save your money and go elsewhere in Kingsford. Its Time For Thai and Ayam Goreng 99 are much better.
James Williams
Great experience, don't know what you're talking about. I've been coming to Singma for many years, and I've found the service to be friendly and generally very good. This is not a five-star restaurant, nor as expensive as others like Mamak.

It's generally always busy, with Malaysian Chinese and Singaporeans which to me is always a good sign. I have never had a watered down laksa, and you can ask the wait-staff to spice it up for you. The kitchen are very accommodating.

Mudcrab is on the expensive side, but it's an order-in speciality. Considering some spices from Malaysia are hard to come by in Australia, this restaurant does really well in replicating hawker food at a very reasonable price... I recently had 8 dishes, plus drinks for four people - we ate like gluttons and it cost just over $120.

If you want a tasty, simple meal without the fancy trimmings this is your place. If you're looking for a five star experience go elsewhere and save the tables for the rest of us who love the food.
Sweetcrazie
Variety. A great place to come to if you want some simple malaysian singaporean food.

Their curry is nice, fried turnip cake not bad. Chicken rice was abit towards the dry side. Rojak had too much sauce on it...

Their chap fan where you choose your own dishes from the food display can be quite delicious depending on what is there on that day.

Teh Tarik was not that sweet (i like mamak's better), their ice kajang was not that great either. so, I dont go for their sweet stuff.

Definately a place I'll go to for a quick and easy meal
Dex Choong
Was warned abt service but I was lucky. Service wasn't shabby but food was horrendous. Fish curry lacked taste, the laksa was watery... There was no heat in their cooking. Just lacked that wok fire gusto! Crabs were ok. Some bits were not cooked and other bits were fried to a crisp. Very disappointed.
Gabriel Chang
Best Singapore chilli crab ever tasted in Australia. Been here on a few occassions. Authentic Malaysian. Service is poor poor poor the owner is abit of a loud mouth character. Desert menu has Chendol have tried ordering twice and both times they have said they have ran out, on non busy times. I have a feeling they don't make it but on the menu. Had their Ice Kacang was superb. Now they do Malaysian breakfast starting at 6am. Pity the Food doesn't match the service
Joshua Loke
It is true the service here is subpar, but it is a great place to get sone tasty Malaysian. The fish head curry is highly recommended.
