Review Stillwater Restaurant - Launceston

My husband and I probably had one of the best meals we’ve ever had here. We had a beautiful window seat by the Tamar river, delicious cocktails and even better food. The Cape Grim eye fillet served with garlic custard was the highlight- all the flavours worked so well together and the meat was cooked to perfection. Staff were also very attentive and professional. We would come back to Lonnie just to dine at Stillwater again.

Fabulous food is tainted by horrible service here. I felt quite unwelcome by the staff the night I visited. A rude waitress came by when my plate was finished to dryly say “all done?” before taking our plates without another look. Then I saw her go to another table with empty plates, where she happily asked how their meal went, and seemed like she actually cared about them. I’m not sure what the reason for this discrimination was, but at the end of the day - there is no reason for discrimination. Also had a waiter drop off our after dinner mints in the most monotone voice he could muster. Food is good, which redeems the review from one to two stars. But unfortunately, the whole experience is worth these two stars because of my personal experience with staff who did not want to treat everyone with kindness. I assume the high prices also accounts for paying the staff, so it would be nice if they could do their jobs properly (or at least pretend). Overall, not happy and would not recommend. You can get better food with better service elsewhere.

We had the pleasure of starting at Stillwater for two nights, with dinner there one night and brekky for both. The entire team there really turned it on for us. So many little personal touches throughout the start, whether it was the baked on site sourdough delivered to our room reach afternoon with the spiced popcorn, the oat milk in the fridge or the questionnaire we were asked to fill in before we got there so that they could accommodate all of the smaller things to make us feel special. The ease in which everything was so smooth, the booking process, eating at either Stillwater or the black cow. But what we LOVED, was the quality of the place. The rooms were next level luxurious. That mini bar (and reasonably priced!), The dinner was up there as one of the best we've had. So accessible and nestled right next to the cataract gorge, I couldn't think of a better place to be. The pub across the trial is worth a look too. Take us back to Stillwater already! Do yourself a favour and spoil yourself next time you're in Launceston. Stay here and you will be thanking me!

This restaurant is a MUST when you come, intimate, beautifully appointed, easy to access. The staff are amazing, informed and willing to advise you through the meal. And the food was superb, from the sourdough, the cultured butter, the octopus starter that was incredible to the Cape grim fillet that could be cut with a butter knife. No room for dessert but the morsel of dark chocolate ganache with freeze dried raspberry was perfect. Booking in advance is essential but worth planning ahead.

We had great recommendations to visit Stillwater and omg… this has to be one of the BEST places we have had the pleasure to not only stay for 3 nights but to also dine in their amazing restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served with locally sourced produce. The staff are well informed and friendly. The rooms are absolutely deluxe. With views over the Tamar river from our room and the restaurant who could ask for more. The entire team there really turned it on for us. Unique touches such as the fresh baked on site sourdough delivered to our room each afternoon with the spiced popcorn. In the fridge we found oat milk, sliced meats and superb goats cheese It was full of wonderful treats and they were not overly expensive. The entire experience was a joy, and we cannot wait to return to Stillwater for what we know will be a special stay. Thanks to Chris and his staff .

Best meal we had in Tasmania. Wait staff were excellent and the food exceptional. Could not fault the dishes, we are worldwide foodies at many top restaurants and this place would go up against the best easily. Thank you for a great culinary experience.

Quite nice food let down by very poor service. We chose to celebrate our first wedding anniversary at Stillwater, a decision we sadly regret. Things began well when we were seated by a very personable bartender named Jack. Sadly things went downhill from there; no wine list, a menu that had been written all over for some unknown reason followed by a disinterested, inattentive waiter who oddly seemed very interested in the table next to us. Interestingly she was unable to ask how her meals were but very capable when providing instruction on how to tip. All in all a disappointing experience

Absolutely amazing service! The staff are so welcoming, charming & friendly with great knowledge & attitude. The venue is gorgeous & has wonderful views in daylight & at night. We came for dinner & I was so happy with my entree & main. I wanted to try so many things on the menu, they sound so delicious. I had a great negroni made for me. Thanks for an amazing evening!

Loved the food here. Its a fusion of asian and tasmanian food. The oyster were fresh, the wild wallaby were up to our expectation. I specially loved the black lip abalone, truffled calamari. Never the less the portion were abit small. The waitress had recommended pinot noir was indeed great wine. The price were abit pricey though.

I booked for my boyfriend and myself in late July, for dinner in late September. We arrived at the restaurant and our seats were up against a wall (the others were against windows), we asked if we could move to a window seat. The waitress said 'no that was reserved for people who had booked a month in advance - ?!? We sat down in our seats and our waitress asked if we knew what drinks we would like... we had not seen drinks menus or even asked for water yet. This set the tone for the rest of the night, we were visited by every waiter that worked in the premises, we counted 7. We felt pressured to order as we had waiters stopping by our table every few minutes asking if we had ordered/what we wanted to order. The food was actually really nice, over priced, but pleasant. However, unfortunately it was ruined by the continual interruptions by waiters. The atmosphere was tense and we couldn't relax. We usually order dessert and matching wines but my the end of the night (we were there an just over an hour) we just wanted to leave. Towards the end of the night we noticed it was the manager/owner who was continually telling the wait staff what to do. We expressed our disappointment with the manager and she proceeded to throw her staff under the bus!! Even telling us their names and that they were new and she had not had time to train them her way. We will not be returning, nor will be recommending to friends and family - it is just not a nice environment.

An amazing evening with terrific food and superb service. Oysters, harissa prawns, quail and baked snapper but the highlight was dessert. Would recommend highly.

Don't bother with a large group. Tried to make a breakfast booking for 55 people for last Thursday for a day of showcasing Tassie to a group of local and interstate wedding guests who had attended my son's wedding the day before. Initial contact I was told we could be fitted in, but with the numbers, had to go through the events manager. Fine, but took her 5 days to get back to me, after multiple phone calls and email. When she finally made contact, could tell from her tone of voice she wasn't interested in our booking. Was going to be $35 a head for some platters down the table, not off the menu, and then when emailed info, added a $1,500.00 hire fee for the restaurant. That equates to $62.00 a head. Made an excuse we would go into lunch. I was under the understanding Tasmania's main industry is hospitality and tourism. Was not no show in this case. We were catered for beautifully a stone throws away, the owner could not have been more accommodating, serving us himself and putting on extra staff as he knew we were on a tight timeframe as we had lots of activities planned for guests during the day. Had 55 of us fed and out in a little over an hour, and the quality of the food was 1st rate. Thanks Cube, Seaport.

Likes: Easy booking online. Nice venue. Very tasty food. Dislikes: Overbearing waitresses leaning across customers at the table. Waiting over an hour for entrees. Price was WAY over the top. Meal size tiny. $16.50 for 1 vodka and raspberry?! More expensive than Sydney NYE. It’s the little things that make a 5 star restaurant, and sadly these were lacking. Disappointed.

Excellent lunch, tempura white fish with cucumber, pickled ginger & spinach salad (plus chips). I dislike cucumber with a passion, but on the recommendation of the waitress, this meal actually changed my mind! Love this place :)

Had a great breakfast (the Red Bowl) - delicious from the first bite to the last! Just sorry I’m returning home to Melbourne and can’t eat there on a regular basis!

After booking in advance for 5 adults wanting breakfast, we are extremely underwhelmed with our experience. We waited awhile for our meals, and then when they came we were all disappointed. Two at the table had eggs and toast, with one of those meals having one piece of toast with two eggs and the other person being lucky enough to have two pieces of toast with theirs. That being said the toast was extremely thin in comparison to what we have had previously at the restaurant. Before everybody at the table had finished their meals, plates were being cleared. The waitress and waiter that served our table didn't converse with us, or ask how are meals were after we'd received them. We were obviously being rushed out of our seats after being their for less than an hour and having booked ahead of time. We were keen to order more coffee, tea etc. but that wasn't an option this morning.

my breakfast cost $31.90. and that was just for the food and not including coffee. I wasn't feeling anything on the menu so I made my own ordering sides of avocado, haloumi, tomato & mushrooms. when I ordered I said to the girl 'you'll chuck in a piece of toast free right?' to which she smiled but when I went to pay to my surprise I was charged $9.90 for the toast. I did try and voice my disappointment to the staff member but I was still charged the full amount. I understand it's somewhat annoying for the kitchen to have to construct a meal of sides but the most expensive breakfast item is $23 so to charge $31 seems a bit crazy. especially when the sides are plain. for instance the avocado could have been smashed with lemon, the mushrooms cooked in garlic butter, or the tomato grilled with herbs. and we waited nearly an hour so that just added to the experience.

Vicky and I had an amazing dinner at Stillwater and loved the dozen oysters, duck and snapper mains.

Have just finished a wonderful evening and meal at Stillwater. Food was absolutely divine. The staff were fantastic, friendly and a perfect amount of ‘how can we help you next’. A late call this afternoon requesting a ‘good table’ preferably near a window was sorted despite the restaurant being full. One mention during that call of me saying it was a birthday dinner for me partner and several of the staff wished him a happy birthday and even jokingly said that fireworks had been arranged for him ( thanks to an external event nearby ) Was brilliant - highly recommended. Ten out of ten.
