Review Hallams Waterfront Restaurant - Launceston

Enjoyable afternoon sitting watching the outside world drift lazily by. The food is good. It’s not trying to be anything too bold but the flavours are balanced. Started with the ocean trout and it was served in a milky ponzu sauce that complimented the soft silky trout perfectly. The lamb was rich and I could say bordering on a tad too much, I could have done with 1/2 a slice less and still been left totally satisfied. But super delicious and the turnips helped to cut through the richness. It was an enjoyable couple of hours, the sun was shining and the weather was perfect. Such a nice way to spend a few winter hours.

The food was super super tasty. I don’t eat risotto very often but this is one of the best I’ve had. The market fish sashimi is definitely the best I’ve ever had. Oysters are not the biggest size but are really fresh. Highly recommended!

Had the most delicious duck, sourced locally from Strelleyfield, cooked and served beautifully! Staff are so kind and accomodating, especially with my 8month old. The Lemon spritz is a must too! Had a spectacular view of the sunsetting at the mouth of The Gorge. Was definitely a treat!!

Absolutely delicious crab risotto and broccolini. Probably the best dishes I had whilst on a tour of Tasmania. The pasta mussels was good but overshadowed. My partner also loved the complimentary bread!

Tasteful & refined food. Well balanced cocktails. Polished service. Lovely warm ambience - A must try.

I’m still drooling over this incredible meal… Pictured is what we ate on Sunday at the lovely Hallam’s Waterfront Restaurant in Launceston, Tasmania. Everything was insanely good, with gorgeous local produce heroed and sauces that forced you to make embarrassing noises of enjoyment out loud. The wine list was great - happy to see some lovely Tamar Valley wines on there, the service was fantastic, the view was lovely and the decor was too - lots of thoughtful touches. But the food was the STAR! I’ve eaten in a lot of fancy restaurants around the world and in Sydney and Melbourne, and this was right up there. Absolutely delicious! I cannot stop thinking about the sauces and the delicate balance of flavours. Can’t wait to come back on my next visit to Tassie!

Lovely ambience. The vaulted timber ceiling and the raging fire added that Tassie charm. Ordered the whole snapper and Paris Mash. It was beautifully cooked and the sauce was just yum! Great service. If ever I return to Launceston, I'm back here in a flash!

In Launceston? Do yourself a favour and visit this lovely restaurant overlooking the Tamar River. It's our favourite spot to relax & enjoy the view, their extensive wine list and delicious menu. Highly recommend!

We went to Hallam’s recently. The restaurant is lovely and the food quality excellent. We chose this restaurant as it is in the entertainment book and should have discounted the meal. We mentioned that we had the entertainment card with us and inquired prior to ordering a meal. The waitress said and I quote, ‘The current owner is not honouring the card this year even though it is the current 2020 edition and he has special permission to not do so’. I am following that up with the entertainment book organisation as clearly that gives the impression of false advertising and not a good look for the brand. Imagiine if this was the view of others who are also in the book!! It is a cautionary tale to anyone going there thinking they will get a discount. Be aware as it spoilt what was a nice meal. Seems mean spirited to us as customers.

Visited Launceston for the weekend and ate here because of the great reviews. The place is absolutely stunning. Cosy place that sits about 50 people and the wooden interior with windows overlooking the water is just spectacular. The Kilpatrick oysters were delicious. Stand out dish was the salt pepper calamari with beanshoots in Vietnamese dressing.

trio dressing oysters - fresh and different dressings are all tasty.
sashimi plate - very fresh 3 kinds of fish. but it is just not to my liking the way it is sliced and prepared.
white fish - must try. very fresh and juicy.
fried baby snapper - this was not on the menu and recommended by staff. crispy outside but juicy inside. even without the spicy sauce on top, it will still be a great dish. last pics speak all about how good it tastes.

The restaurant is close to the Kings Park and quite easy to find. We started with oysters seasoned with bacon and sour and salty sauce which could greatly improve your appetite. My main dish was grilled white fish sided with mushrooms and beans. And my friend’s was steak sided with potatoes and onions. We both gave five stars to our main courses as the food were fresh and cooked by light flavor. We also thought highly of the sweet potato fries. By the way I tried a glass of local beer and it was awesome! Every one comes to Launceston should take a drop.

Really nice food!!! Oyster is much better that I had in the glass house in Hobart which said as Blackman bay oyster. The taste of white fish is super juicy, variety and tasty, I think it's a must try with brilliant grilled vegetables as base. Comparing to seafood, the steak is so normal, how to say, not taste as beef, just something meat but not really good beef. Overall, I highly recommend here for seafood.

Came here looking for some fresh seafood and this place delivered! Oysters Kilpatrick were beautiful and fresh. Scallops were cooked to perfection. Chose the king fish for mains and lime and lemon curd for dessert. All choices were yummy! Sitting beside the waterfront this place is perfect. Staff friendly and efficient. Was a relatively cheap night out as we used the Entertainment Book and received one free main. Would definitely return and pay full price!

The thing that let this place down was its service. Staff weren't helpful at all. We waited around 15-20 minutes to get our order taken and it's not like we didn't call a couple people over (2) first one said she would go tell our waiter to take our order as she was to busy walking around doing nothing much and the second guy we asked said the same thing. Again.. he didn't look busy.. I'm not sure how they work there but they don't like helping each other or something.
Finally our order was taken by our waitress who looked far from happy and ended up forgetting one of our orders. We noticed she didn't write anything down when serving us but did for her other customers. We would have told someone we are missing a dish but no one approached us after the food was delivered. After mains we asked for the dessert menu and wouldn't you know it! It took another 15 or so minutes for someone to approach us to take the order, this is after a couple of waiters looked at us and then just kept walking..
But on a positive, food was nice.... but feels very over priced for what you get.
Won't be returning.. purely because of unfriendly staff which has now ruined the experience. The chefs are defiantly delivering but their floor staff definitely drop the ball every time.

If you only do one thing in Launceston make sure it’s having a meal here at Hallam. We have eaten at some of Australia’s best restaurants and this truly is one of them.

Dinner has been pleasingly served and enjoyed! Great atmosphere and view complemented with nice staffs and amazing food! I’ve been here couple of times now and couldn’t once be a fault! Definitely try their Oyster with garnish! The best I would say! Basil Panacottta with white peach foam is one could fool you by its look but dig in and let ur taste bud dance with the flavor!

We went there last Christmas as being far from family at this time of the year we wanted to offer us a nice dinner for this special day. We did the best join by going there. The food is just fantastic and delicate and the products are noble and very well prepared. It is a bit expensive but for the food they served I think the price is fair. I tried the seared Tasmanian scallops and they were melting in my mouth. Just perfect. My main was the Atlantic salmon with speck and the combination was so good. It was really different and for me it was the kind of gastronomic restaurant that you really remember and that you go for specific occasion. I f I have the opportunity to come back to Tasmania I wish I could go back to this amazing place.

A little pitiful on the amount of wine served in a glass but otherwise a very good experience. The service was friendly and efficient.I would stay away from the seafood platter (from any restaurant) unless you are in a generous mood to maximize the restaurant's profits, otherwise you can't go wrong with most dishes. The salmon with pan fried potatoes and bacon pieces was a great combination that offered the perfect blend of taste. Each component including the salmon was very well cooked with a gentle but crisp char on the outside with "melt in your mouth" texture on the inside. The rosemary infused balsamic that was provided as dip for the bread again tasted superb. Dessert of Crème Brûlée rounded off the meal nicely and was accompanied by a firm but tasty pistachio cake.Happy to return. Recommend that for 2 people or more you simply buy a bottle of wine unless you like the glass less than half empty.

We were just taking a walk and saw this restaurant, decided to have a coffee and some desert during lunch; coffees was okay but out of two deserts,we liked mint brûlée and other was very below average.
Came as a singleton midweek. Was told that my seating choice was unavailable and when I asked for a table by the window I was informed they were 'reserved' so sat in the middle of a 2/3 empty restaurant. Felt the total price of AUD60-70 was a little steep for a nice cocktail and two tasty, if a little under seasoned, entrees with poor views of the river and mediocre service. The tables I requested remained vacant. Probably nice if you came as a couple or a group but not great for singletons.

This beautiful waterfront restaurant has a very modern setting with a welcoming decor. The staff are attentive and friendly with superb customer service backed with experience in the industry.

We didn't have any entrees or mains, but skipped straight to desserts and coffee. The basil panna cotta had incredible flavours and textures through out each layers was immaculate. Whilst the whole dish was incredible on the taste buds, I found that the panna cotta itself didn't have the right consistency.
The vanilla bean crème brûlée was faultless, simply delicious, crunchy and the pistachio cake was moist and spongy!

Coffee was delightful and refreshing! Would love to come back and dine here in the foreseeable future..

Tasty seafood prepared into delicious refined dishes. For entree i had huge tempura calamari with a rich beetroot relish and chorizo. Then had a japanese dish with diced tuna & salmon with rice, avocado, ginger and spicy vegetables, the picture is deceptive as the portion was BIG and so much fresh fish i was very happy. As i skipped breakfast and am a big eater i pushed for a third dish, the seafood chowder and my goodness, the most tasty seafood dish i have ever had- the broth was sublime, big chunks of fish, several scallops and winter vegetables. It was so good i wish i could have finished it all but i was so full at that point. Service was professional and friendly.

Service: Excellent. Very attentive wait staff who were genuinely polite and charming.

Taste: Entree was the poke bowl with tuna and salmon in sushi rice. Yummy but a bit too much ginger and pickled cabbage was included in the mix which overpowered the flavour of the fish. Main was the salmon with speck and tomato butter. Absolutely delicious piece of fish which was cooked perfectly and the accompaniments were expertly paired to make a flavourful fish that made the meal.

Value: Main was around $35-40 whilst entree was about $25. We shared an entree and each had a main which ended up being plenty of food. With two glasses of wine the final cost was around $70 pp. I thought the entree was a bit overvalued but the mains were well worth the money.

Overall: Hallams service and the quality of their food make them top tier among Launcestons restaurant scene. I would highly recommend for any seafood lover.

Could not of been happier with the dining experience at Hallam's Waterfront Restaurant. My partner and I made a trip across from Melbourne to Launceston for four nights and this restaurant was in a very convenient location and was able to fit us into an early 6pm time slot. We were seated right next to a window that looks out onto the beautiful waterfront. We were also greeted and consistently provided fantastic service by staff and the food was some of the best seafood we have ever tasted. Very highly recommended.
Chris
Great seafood flavours with a nice location. Decor is done nicely in a real timber nautical theme fitting perfectly with the location. Service was fast and polite. Price was leaning towards the expensive side but worth a visit.

Hallam's certainly exceeded our expectations for lunch. We ordered the grilled white fish and cape grim porterhouse, both which were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal in launceston.

These are probably the worst pictures I have taken but anyway, food was great! We went with our Tasmanian friend and his family. We were talking about getting some Tasmanian seafood for dinner and he invited us along. I had the tempura gummy fish which is a white fish and their version of fish and chips. My wife had the seafood bisque and it was awesome!!! I would definitely return for a meal!

I came with a friend and we ordered the premium white fish. The fish was under seasoned and underwhelming. The skin was not even crispy. They charged us $2.50 for a hot water - I was ripped off! I will never be coming back here!
Food Glorious Food
Recommended by the lady at the Ticket counter at cataract gorge. So glad she did!!!
It was only a short stroll from where we were staying. Reasonable wine by the glass list.
Oysters were fresh as ever. We ordered the Tasmanian salmon as well as linguine. It was so delicious!!!!
I'm in love.

Tasty food but rating only 1.0 for service.
很好吃的食物,但是服务只给一分。

We arrived hallm's on 25/03, amazing day with this restraint still open on this day, but we waited 10-15 minutes to order, oysters take 10-15, not that bad especially tasty really good! Then we wait another 40-50 minutes for one soup and beef filet combined with fish. Even thought they are nice, but they took so long time on serve. We would think about this restraunt next time if we do not have that enough time to wait.

Then we would like to complain about the surcharge on Easter Friday. We would not feel unhappy if we need to pay more on Easter Friday, especially we also wanna to give tips to them before we pay the bill. While later we found we are charged more than the price show on the menu, we double checked with staff there, they show us a notification at the bottom of the menu with teeny tiny word : surcharge 10% today. Without any oral notification and so cool service. We feel not that comfortable. Also we should say, they charge us more than 110% total price. But we do not wanna go back to do any complain, as we still got other plan after this lunch, especially we originally only wanna spend no more than one hour on this lunch. But it took us at least one and half hour.

Hallam's has some great reviews and given we hadn't yet had a realseafood platter in Tassie, this was a must.

We ordered the house bread, half a dozen Kilpatrick oysters, the hot and cold seafood platter and shine char grilled vegetables.

What I liked: All the oysters were AMAZING!!! The baked salmon was cooked medium rare to perfection! All the seafood was incredibly fresh!! The char grilled vegetables were packed with flavour!

What I didn't like: the house bread was cold. The prawns were the smallest we've seen in Tassie. The beetroot cured smoked salmon, fresh clams and fried scallops were all flavourless. The fried flake was really mushy. The chips (though we didn't eat them) were the frozen kind straight out of the packet.

For $110 for a platter, I was expecting tasty seafood especially when Tassie has the best in the country. And not frozen chips either.

Service was ok. One word of advice to management: please do not ask me 4 times in the space of 3 minutes for my drink order. Yes I started timing after the 2nd person came as soon as the 1st walked away.

Service was remarkably lovely. The girls were very attentive to your needs.
The food was average for the price. None the less was delicious.

Good night out, decor fun and we saw a lovely little spot by the window in a nook, unfortunately we were told no as someone had specifically requested that table. We ordered the seafood hot/cold platter for two with a glass of Riesling and sparkling rose. Tempura fish, battered scallops (warm), salmon (well done), pippis, calamari in chilli spice sauce (great flavour), oysters-best so far in Tasmania, sashimi tuna-melted in the mouth, prawns. A group arrived and the lovely little table that had been specifically requested disappeared in a rearrangement of the restaurant, making us a little uncomfortable with what we were told earlier. We finished quickly, service was quick but there wasn't really any atmosphere and it would have been great to see some smiles!
José
Atmosphere was nice, I really liked the decorations of the restaurant. My entree took 35mins to arrive, a couple sitting next to me were already halfway through their mains and had arrived after me. There was a large fish bone in my Chowder, which also happened to lack flavour. My "Tempura" battered fish was ordinary and so was their "house tartare" that wasn't any different to the kind from a jar. The Mussaman Curry was ridiculously spicy and this is coming from a person that loves hot food and eats at Thai restaurants very often. The service was mediocre, a waiter takes your drink order and disappears, another takes your meals and disappears, the last brings cutlery and the brings the food and clears the table. Could have been a case of bad luck, but I found this restaurant to be overpriced and overated.

My husband and I enjoyed the most beautiful meal - starting with a tasting plate and then followed with seaford linguine and a banana prawn/calamari dish. As foodies we have been spoiled and i can honestly say we've nit enjoyed better seafood anywhere else. Well done!

Beautiful fresh seafood cooked to perfection! Would have preferred more variety, but I do acknowledge and appreciate their focus on quality over quantity. A must visit for the seafood lover!
Amanda
We stumbled across this restaurant while strolling the banks of the river that morning. What a beautiful position.
The inside was intimate and the menu a dream for seafood lovers.
We opted for the two course spring special which was $39. The waitress was a little confused and couldn't quite get her head around the fact my partner wanted an entree and main & I wanted main and dessert.
The waitstaff where attentive but lacked a bit of personality about them.
Couldn't fault the food though. divine fresh seafood!!!!
Janet
Seafood chowder is huge portion but it was not served hot whereas seafood platter taste alright but overpriced. I am not sure beet root cured salmon is appropriate for seafood for two platter. Overall I can't say the food is the best in town, there must be some specialties to make it enough to stand out..still acceptable.

A rainy, cold day in Launceston required lunch in the good company of like-minded foodophiles...coupled with the hospitable atmosphere of a reliable restaurant. I got all those requirements in spades at Hallam's. Served by two diligent waitresses, our drinks were constantly topped up, our every need attended to, and our opinions of each course enquired about and checked on.
Mr Bill
Difficult to make a reservation but well with the effort. Service is excellent, friendly, efficient and accomodating.
Meals were substantial and very tasty. Lovely atmosphere and overall a class act.
Freya
Delicious local seafood. This place is great. We went for lunch and sat outside on the deck. Everything we had was cooked perfectly and tasted beautiful. A little on the expensive side for lunch but could not fault it otherwise.
Jacoleonnortje
Si tres bonne!. We had dinner here last Friday evening and found it an great cullenary experience! We started off with freshly baked bread accompanied with a dozen original oysters. The oysters was so fresh with lots of meat! I have not tasted oysters this good before.
For mains I had the beef cheek and my partner the pan fried white fish of the day. We were both plesantly surprised and had to send our compliments to the kitchen!
If you feel like spoiling yourself this is the place to go to. Its not cheap but you get what you pay for!

Hallam's ain't what it used to be.. Our first time back at Hallam's after a few years, what a disappointment that was. On the up side the service was good, as was the Hallam's Taste plate, if a little pricey at $33. Unfortunately that's where the good things finished, about half the menu was unavailable. from what was available, I had the pan fried trevalla. This was over cooked and appeared to have been just thrown on the plate with some watercress and a few potatoes that had at some point in their lives been in the same room with some garlic and capers. My partner had the tempura fish which was average at best, soggy and oozing oil at worst. Our 10 yo son had the Laksa which was okay, but nothing to write home about. Ahhh well it looks like it will be a few years till we go back again.
Diana
I really enjoyed my meal. Oysters were delicious. Staff were attentive and friendly.
Kate Brockman
Doesn't live up to reputation at all.. Had been recommended this restaurant based on reputation but overall not impressed. The decor is a little daggy and the food pretty average. The seafood chowder was like drinking straight cream and the trevalla pretty average. Wouldn't likely go back.
Tonyjay73
Very disappointing!. We booked this restaurant by recommendation and unfortunately were sadly let down by most things this evening. The girl who served us was clearly under skilled and looked as though she really couldn't be bothered. We ordered the oysters which were the clear winner of the dishes we ordered as the rest was a big let down. AVOID the Thai fish/mussel curry as it's nothing like a curry whatsoever, thick claggy and tasteless, hadn't been seasoned and certainly nowhere near expectations. My partner ordered the 'special' snapper - again a soggy disappointment. No real care goes in to this food in our view. The place is extremely over priced for very average food and service. Give this one a miss and go to your local fish & chip shop.

I will probably come to launceston a million times just to dine here. Amazing service and awesome food. Truly this is best seafood joint in Australia
Emma
Came here for dinner last week and had the green curry with fin fin and mussels followed by the poached fig. So delicious! Was sat right in front of the serving hatch so got cooked a bit by heat from the kitchen, which wasn't ideal but it was a last minute booking and the restaurant was packed so I appreciate that there wasn't much they could do about that. All in all a great evening and top quality, flavoursome food :)

Mrs.. My husband and I had dinner a couple weeks ago recommended by the Tamar river cruise with 10 percent discount. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fantastic and you expect the food would be the same but it is really disappointing. Salmon was overlooked and presented with carrot shred and peanut. Can the chef not be able to to think more fancy food mixed up with salmon especially in such seemly luxury restaurant? Or he/she has a budget on it?
Broadwest
Expensive fish & chips. After reading previous reviews it appeared that the main complaints about this restaurant was the poor service. Now I know why! I knew things were off to a bad start when someone else's drinks were brought to our table one minute after being seated and then waiting ten minutes for our drinks. The service staff appeared to be inexperienced, uninterested and unhappy. Our table had three different table waiters, all had poor product knowledge and the drinks waiter was incompetent. I might add that jean shorts are acceptable for a fish and chip shop counter employee, but not for waiters in a upmarket restaurant. If this was a bistro at the local pub all that would be fine, but this place presents itself as an upmarket seafood restaurant where a $25 bottle of Jantz was being sold for $50. Even though we booked and the restaurant was only half full, we were seated in front of the kitchen adjacent to the toilets. With entree's at around $20 and mains around $35, the meals at our table could best be described as tasteless. I had salt & pepper calamari entree which all agreed had neither salt nor pepper in the mix. The tempura fish and chips I had for main was actually flake and tasted fine with good presentation. But a very small portion of fish and chips with no accompaniments is just cheap. Not wishing to harp too much on the cost, but it is simply a glorified fish and chip shop. And lastly, the cleanliness and maintenance of the premises left a lot to be desired, with dust, no dirt on walls and ceiling and light fittings with most of the globes missing. Very poor

*Recently under new management - we had come often to Hallams for the seafood platter and array of fresh options. Unfortunately, they have stopped serving the platter and there is no alternative that lives up to that amazing, fresh, exciting representation of what tasmania's waters have to offer.
So we ordered the grilled fish which was cooked perfectly, but the entrees left a lot to be desired. One entree cost $22 and had one prawn! The wine list is extensive and ever changing, great array of local wines. Unfortunately there was no air conditioning so we sweltered through the meal and left as soon as possible.
Thanks to the loss of the seafood platter Hallams will make it off our list of regular restaurants but is worth a quick visit.
AnthonyB
Nice atomsphere and surroundings a bit disappointed in both the entree (Water front taste plate) and the main(over baked salmon and trevalla).
Adelaide Guy
Oven baked salmon was a little over cooked and prices were over the top, especially for the entrées. Over rated in my opinion.

Warm, inviting restaurant with wonderful seafood. I randomly found Hallam's Waterfront Restaurant whilst strolling along the Tamar river walkway. It looked classic and stylish without being pompous, so I gave it ago.

Dining alone, I enjoyed a delicious memorable lunch here. I choose the share plate which had fresh oysters, smoked salmon and Thai fishcakes along with the Beetroot and Persian Feta salad which was beautiful. An Affogato with Liqueur was the perfect finish to my meal.

When I think of the type of Seafood Restaurant that I like to dine at, Hallam's is the perfect example that springs to mind. The flavours were clean and well balanced. The venue was warm and inviting and the staff were friendly and accommodating.

It's not easily when dining alone, but I was made to feel welcomed and special. I LOVE this place; it goes down as a favourite for me .
Well done guys :-)

Great Lunch. Recommended by the skipper of our cruise we decided to use our discount vouchers and pop in for lunch. The food was fresh and tasty and everyone enjoyed their choice greatly. The chowder is highly recommended.
Womby69
Bland and tasteless. Very disappointing seafood. Have no idea how this restaurant just came second in seafood restaurant of Australia. Watery prawns and tasteless oysters. Very expensive seafood platter for two - was basically just a fish platter with a couple of prawns and oysters. Very very disappointing. Service and location were great - it was just the food that was very bland. Surely fresh seafood can also have flavour. Hopefully this review will stop others from spending a lot of money on food that does not deliver on taste.

Excellent establishment . Sea food platter hard to go past . Chowder is very very good . Great service . Highly recommended

It was the best seafood I've ever had. Those oysters blew my MIND. Well worth it!

DIVINE!!!. I've had lunch here today with my family and the food was amazing!! We had a seafood platter to share, a seafood chowder and some fish and chips for the kids. All this food was divine and superbly presented! To top it all of, deserts were simply mind blowing!! I would not hesitate to eat there again, and again...and again! Thanks to all the staff at Hallam's :-)

New menu disappointed. We had a meal here and were really disappointed. Seafood pasta was expensive, dry and featureless.

Will be a while before we return

Fantastic fresh flavours. Nothing to fault. Great portions and great prices very lovely staff... Wish I lived closer I'd go more often
Kim
Lovely food, make a booking. Unfortunately I didn't book so I opted to sit outside, staff didn't recommend but were obliging. I think they were right. Trevally was beautifully cooked. If I was inside I might have had more.

Lovely. My husband and I enjoyed lunch Hallams recently. It was a nice sunny day so we sat outside on the deck with a couple of glasses of Jansz. The setting is lovely, just on the river near the yacht club, boardwalk and opposite a nice leafy park.
My husband had the crayfish thermidore, and I was jealous! It was absolutely beautiful! There is not a thing that could be faulted, the crayfish was cooked to perfection. Still so succulent. And the sauce was YUM!
I had the Waterfront Taste plate. This too was lovely. The produce was so fresh and it was evident that great care had been taken in the preparation of the ingredients. The only negative thing I would say was that it was maybe a bit small as a "main" for one person.
We also shared beetroot salad...This was again very good.

They have a great wine list and the service was very good also. We are Launceston locals and know that you dont receive fantastic service everywhere you go. But thankfully Hallams is an exception.

We will absolutely return to this restaurant, very happy with our experience
Justin
Fantastic Seafood!. Great restaurant in a nice location. The service was top shelf throughout the dinner, with the staff being as helpful as possible at all times. We ordered the Flathead and the seafood platter and both were very large portions, fresh and delicious. Highly recommend and will be back next time in town
Lyn Amy
Friendly, professional service, fantastically fresh seafood, great location, good wine-we would highly recommend this excellent restaurant.

Amazing seafood. Fresh and delicious. Great views and pretty little restaurant. Loved it.
Globetrot International Postman
Showed up for our 8pm booking with no table available, the staff were apologetic and nice and we weren't in a hurry so no harm done. Two free wines also took care of any frustrations :) we were seated only 15 or so min late. For entree, had seared scallops that were quite delicious, the sauce was a pea mash (which was a little bland until adding some of the bedded salt which made it delicious) and the scallops were absolutely terrific which were the centerpiece of the dish so all up pretty great. Mains was the seafood platter for two which had three types of fished cooked beautifully in three different ways, battered, crumbed and pan fried. Several very fresh and very tasty oysters accompanied the plate as did several mussels, equally as fresh and tasty. Prawns topped the medley which were pretty much just the same as you'd get anywhere (still very tasty), and two nice sized hunks of calamari adorned the tray as well. The calamari was fairly salty but just had bites of other delicious seafood in between to cull the saltiness. Enjoyed some nice Tassie wines throughout the meal and had a very enjoyable dinner all up. Very happy!

Wasn't impressed with the service and food. We waited for an hour for our main (restaurant wasnt that busy) and it was just average.

Brilliant, had the salmon and hubby had the travella and they were both fabulous. Service was great also! Highly recommend

Absolutely beautiful seafood. The salt and pepper calamari entree was amazing and the seafood platter was fresh and cooked to perfection. The staff were very friendly and service was excellent. Highly recommend hallams for delicious seafood!!!

Seafood Craving. I was craving fresh seafood and just happened to be traveling to one of the best places in Aus for just that, Tasmania.

My entree was Chowder, served with freshly grilled fish and and muscles. This was rich, creamy and delicious. Not the best I've had but still highly rated.

Next was the seafood platter. A very large selection of fresh hot and cold seafood. Oysters, smoked salmon, muscles and king prawns for the cold selection and a few varieties of fish cooked to how you like and a generous amount of calamari for the hot selection. It was served with hot roasted potatoes and dipping sauce. This was a wonderful selection. The calamari was the highlight and was the best squid I have tasted. Soft, tender and delicious.

My partner had the same entree but chose a different main, another entree that contained a selection off the entree list. This included raw oysters with cucumber, muscles in a creamy sauce and fried prawns that came with an amazing sticky sweet chilli sauce.

The only disappointing part of the meal was the oysters. They didn't seem as fresh as they could have been. I had oysters earlier that day that were just divine but these were not as large, soft or as flavorsome. There were also a few fragments of shell in them due to poor shucking.

Otherwise, the staff were friendly and attentive. Prices were good and I would definitely go back there and recommend it to any seeking great seafood.

Half cray heaven. Our B&B recommended Hallam's as best for seafood in Launceston. We were not disappointed. The service was excellent, prompt, considerate. The menu left plenty of room for choice, ranging from seafood staples to local specialties. My half cray thermidor was wonderful right down to the succulent meat in its claws. The waitstaff found us a small table with a view towards Cataract Gorge; a good setting for fine dining. We gave it 7.5 out of 10.

This is a photoview post (contains mostly photos only).
Verdict? The fresh oysters and the fried prawns in the taste plate were absolutely divine. But the service was a little slow and disappointingly the entré es were the highlight of the meal.
