Review Toong Thong Thai - Launceston

Jeffrey O'Neill
A real gem. The fish cakes some of the best I've had. Chicken satay was good too. I sadly can't remember the name of the main course we had, but it was really nice. Fairly authentic Thai. If you're in Launceston give this family run business a go. You won't be disappointed.

Wow the food was amazing!!! Finally a restaurant that listens when you ask for spicy 🌶🌶🌶 The red curry was amazing and the Pad Thai couldn't be faulted!!! Definitely worth the wait when they are busy so don't listen to whingers who'd prefer a 30second reheated meal.... Will definitely return... most likely tomorrow 🤣

The Tom Yum soup and the basil and chilli chicken were both scrumptious! The veg spring rolls were nice and crunchy too. Will go there again, when I'm next back in Launceston. Top Thai cuisine!

Magnificent food, we popped in without a booking on what was a clearly a very busy night, food fresh, thai hot as per our request, loads of vegetables, very generous servings and great table service, we will most definitely be back!

We dined at this restaurant on our visit to Launceston. It is conveniently located behind our hotel. The food was excellent. The service was attentive. Overall it was a very pleasurable experience.

Great food! Amongst other delicious dishes, we had the Penang curry that was particularly amazing. Very friendly staff. Can’t wait to get back there!!! 🤩😋

Food is not bad, but service is really disappointing. No one served us tap water or menu till I asked for that. Even people came later were served.

Loved the Pad Thai and customer service here. The staff members went above and beyond to provide us with a memorable and amazing restaurant experience. They even surprised us by helping us celebrate our friend's birthday. Look forward to eating at this restaurant again.

We stumbled across this little restaraunt and glad we did, the interior is plain but the food is fantastic we had a green curry and I have never been asked before if we wanted mild or medium, we took medium and it was spot on.
Very attentive staff

It makes great business sense to cater to vegans. We are loyal repeat customers! Toong Thong Thai always serve lovely food, their green curry is our favourite. Staff are always attentive and helpful.

Prices are on the expensive side compared to most other Thai places - $20 for fried rice and $22 for most stirfries and curries. Fried rice was ok but the pad kee mow was completely off the mark! Not cooked with the usual chilli and basil (even though the menu said so), wasn't spicy at all (not a trace of chilli in the dish) and was mostly sweet and peppery (tasted a bit like the pepper sauce used in the Vietnamese diced beef dish). Not authentic at all!

The food was nice but the customer service experience was horrible. Staff wouldn't make eye contact when I walked in and was left standing in middle of restaurant for over five minutes before someone even looked at me (it's a small restaurant so it's pretty easy to see when someone walks in). Was then told take-away would take 30 minutes, but had to wait for 50 minutes for meal to be ready. When meal finally came out, had to stand there for another five minutes while staff chatted to customers who had already paid and were leaving - again no eye contact or acknowledgement that I was standing there. After finally getting food home realised that they had left out one entree. They had their answering machine on when I tried to call them to let them know, so had to go back to restaurant to complain. Definitely need to improve their customer service skills.

I was admittedly prepared to be disappointed when I walked in and saw Caucasian waiters (call me racist) but the cooking staff are Asian, which is reassuring when I'm dining in an Asian restaurant! I was pleasantly surprised by the food that came out. I thought the prices on the menu were dearer than a couple of other Thai places in town, but they also have more generous portion sizes. Ordered pad Thai and massaman curry for 2 people, had to get half the curry in a take away box as could not finish. Curry was lovely, rich and sweet, could have done with a few other sliced veggies in it. Pad Thai was sweet and saucy which I do like, could do with more veggies as someone else already noted, but I couldn't fault the flavour. Service was generally good, had to call trainee waiter over to fill my glass but otherwise polite staff. Decor very modern. Overall a pleasant dining experience.

Toong Thong Thai Restaurant. What a great little restaurant, we had a very pleasant meal, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. Couldn't ask for better on a balmy summer evening.

Delicious meal and faultless service. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Everything from entree (Tempura vegetables and crumbed prawns) to the main course (Yellow curry with chicken and Udon noodles with sweet chilli sauce and basil) was delicious.

This was by far the worst Thai meal I have ever had. I love and appreciate good Thai food but I'm usually quite forgiving- not this time! This busy restaurant served up a plate of green curry that was literally brown and gluggy, it looked and tasted like it had been thickened with corn flour- salty and horrible. Don't be deceived by the satisfied looking crowds, this restaurant is truly awful.

Average. The food was fresh and flavoursome, however portions were small for the price.
The place lacked atmosphere

The space is not very warm. It's well heated (important in Launceston) but a bit soulless. It's clean and modern enough though and the service was extremely friendly and efficient. For entree, I had the fish cakes. They were chewy and not particularly tasty. The dipping sauce that came with them was obviously out of a bottle. For main I went with the old staple, pad thai. It was a generous serving and tasty, but overly sweet, not at all spicy and a bit light on all ingredients other than noodles and sauce. Not a bad place for a quick bite or a takeaway maybe, but I don't think I'd dine in again.
