Review The Pasta Merchant - Launceston

Mike Noordermeer
If you’re after a quick, cheap, average-tasting takeaway pasta meal, by all means try The Pasta Merchant. If you want something you’d find in a ‘fine dining’ establishment, this is not the place for you. Based on other reviews, I think we were just unlucky on the night. The garlic bread was very ordinary, and the chicken and mushroom pasta had little chicken and almost no mushroom. That said, the order was completed quickly, it tasted fine, and it filled our bellies. We shall try again.

What a treat!!! We were looking to get some gelato and ended up here.... Fantastic gelato.... Hazelnut and mint was my fav combo.... The staff were so friendly... The the serving was almost the size of a meal 🤣😋... Fantastic....

My absolute favourite place for a quick lunch or takeaway! Cannot fault the texture of either, the pasta or the sauce! Only wish they used pans to heatup the pasta and sauce together, rather than microwaves as it tends to make the pasta slightly mushy.

Nice little restaurant with a good takeaway selection and desserts including Gelato and tarts/cakes. Nice helpful staff. Prices are a little high for pasta but it's high quality food. Good veggetarian selection as well. Will definitely go back for more.

This place seems pretty busy but most people have the food takeaway and I think I know why! When you microwave pasta it just doesn’t taste that good! And the staff brought out fettuccine boscaiola, they said it came with red sauce! First time ever it hasnt come out with white sauce! The waitress tried to convince us that red sauce is the norm but unfortunately we know better

I read the reviews for this place and decided to give it a shot despite some reviews condemning that they reheat the pasta and sauce. The picture of the chicken pesto looked so good! Happy to report that it was as tasty as I expected it to be! Creamy savoury and the spaghetti had a nice chew to it. They heat it through so it is piping hot and you don’t need to worry about cold spots! The desserts and ice cream looked great, would love to try another day. Free street parking outside the store after 6pm! My partner had the marinara fettuccine in tomato sauce, it was a little bit more bland and the pasta had not been tossed through the sauce before reheating, like the chicken pesto was. For this reason, it felt like there wasn’t enough sauce. The fettuccine however was so silky and smooth! I can only imagine how much more delicious it would be if we had the facilities to cook our own pasta. We also shared a chicken lasagne which was nice and crispy on the edges and soft and silky in the centre. Delicious too! I will add that if you’re an adult deciding between the small and large, to go for the large! You can’t get enough of this pasta, and also the small was quite a bit smaller than I expected. It’s a shallow round container, compared to the deeper round containers you might get takeaway soup in :) All in all, this place deserves more credit and I would definitely recommend it😀 a tasty, comforting and affordable take away spot for tourists like myself stopping through the city :)

When my wife and I decided to move our wedding forward, we needed a caterer in a rush. We contacted the pasta merchant about catering for a 25 person wedding and they were only too happy to assist. It was a easy process and was able to be sorted out within 20 minutes of first contacting them. We were able to pick up the food hot to serve straight to our guests. We found the food absolutely delicious and really good value for money. We would highly recommend the pasta merchant for other such events.

Excellent chocolate gelato. The lemon gelato is like saltwater taffy in texture, it’s really delicious. The gnocchi here is so good, I take it home and serve it at dinner parties with my own sauce. Warning: the lasagna is addictive. Great small business and my favourite source for chinotto. Much loved by locals.

We have been eating out every day for 2 weeks and this was by far the most delicious meal we have had. Service was fast , staff extremely pleasant, food was piping hot and taste to die for ! I had the Pasta, Roast Chicken and Pesto in a creamy sauce and my daughter had Pasta with Roast Chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce , we both agreed we will definitely be back and very affordable too . We had the small serve which was very filling . A win, win situation !

Had dinner here yesterday with my family. Have to say that The Pasta Merchant serves really fresh and tasty pasta. My marinara with cream sauce was really tasty. My wife and daughter enjoyed their pastas too. It was so good we returned today for more. The place was also busy with walk in customers who packed. The locals are so lucky!

We should have just got their pasta to takeaway as the price difference between dining in and takeaway is significantly different when ordering panini as it comes with a side salad of a leaves and Parmesan.

I tried their chicken panini which was better than my husbands salami panini which was too salty for my taste. My sons beef lasagna was okay, but not worth the price you pay for the portion size.

Unbelievably cheap place for lunch which is no doubt very popular especially for the people working or visiting the hospital just down the road.
The pasta is made in house and fresh, the only down side is the sauce is reheated in the microwave, right in front of your eyes. For certain sauces, this method works just fine, but for the hot clam sauce, it can ruin the clams as they can come out quite tiny and rubbery. The sauce is delicious and given how busy they are, I am surprised they haven’t invested in a Bain marie or something similar to keep the sauces hot and ladle that onto the pasta.
Would recommend for a tasty cheap filling meal especially on a cold day, roughly 300 days a year in Launceston!

We had high expectations seeing the affordable and freshly made pasta being advertised by The Pasta Merchant.

The mixed vegetable salad arrived with a lovely tangy dressing and a colourful array of mushrooms, spinach and capsicum. Although an extra serving of vegies would have made this pasta a tad fresher and crisper!

Unfortunately, the 'gourmet' hot clam pasta was an immense let down, having just been reheated from the microwave. The pasta (which was made daily) arrived on the table both overcooked and almost translucent. In addition the clams in the sauce had shrunk to the point of insignificance and were rubbery.

Overall, we appreciated the homemade pasta but were disappointed by the fresh produce being tainted by the utilisation of the microwave.

This is a good option if you are looking for a cheap and cheerful dinner. It seems to be avery popular takeaway spot for locals - but we opted to eat in. It's not fine dining - the food is pre-prepared and heated up in a microwave, but it was surprisingly good. The pasta was al dente and the sauces were tasty. We ordered a couple of pasta meals, a salad and a gelato and it came to about $20 per head - very reasonable.
