Review Ria Malay Kitchen - Leederville

Yvonne Fletcher BOUNCE BACK
Really enjoyed the menu choices with a variety of gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options. The hostess was welcoming and accommodating. Our waitstaff friendly and provided swift service. Acoustically great easy to chat between your own table and not compete with noise from surrounding tables.

Decided to give this a go. Ordered the rendang, stewed beef, fried chicken, mee goreng and thai fish. Watch for the roti (this is the same roti you get in the frozen section of the supermarket) - you pay $3.50 per piece for this. The dishes i guess were fusion inspired and tailored for western palette. Thai fish was a battered fish fillet. The meal was okay.
Mel Scott (Melscottyy)
Delicious! I don't give 5/5 often but I thought the food was really good. The beef rendang and sweet and sour pork were highlights. I thought my mandarin sour cocktail was a little unbalanced in acidity but the concept was there. Service was also pleasant and envrionment warm.
Ness Fez
Nicely furnished, large venue. Did is a tad on the expensive side, especially for Malaysian. Cocktails and dishes we tried were all tasty. Dessert was a bit disappointing. The option I had selected (out of 4), I was told was not available when I went to order.
Dinusha Chandratilleke
Great Malaysian food, with large portions. The food was authentic, service was prompt. The satay chicken and Portuguese baked fish were a highlight.
Stoofler The Lost Aussie
Got delivered tonight. Containers were half full and food was cold . 70 % onion ratio to meat. $65 ...my dogs enjoyed the left overs
Abingdon Sovereign
A bit squishy. Not ideal for large groups. Service could be better. Nice curries but desserts too sweet and not authentic Malaysian.

Tasty food, good quick service - their Friday lunch special was great value!

The food here is seriously tasty! We tried the rendang and the kway teow and were blown away by the flavours. The presentation is also top notch.

Ria Malay kitchen has been in Leederville for many years now, and has expanded over the years into a very well patronised joint on the main Leederville strip. Once seated we chose the pork nibbles to start. Lovely mini ribs in a gooey sweet and sour sauce – they were moreish and we ate them hungrily. It would have been good to have some finger bowls or wet wipes for afterwards.

Have had excellent meals at Ria back when it opened years ago. The new owner has no idea what is coming out of the kitchen nor seems to care. Instead stands at the entrance like a Crow when he should be in the kitchen ensured quality control. The slow cooked Lamb was undercooked. The normally excellent pistachio, pear and cos lettuce salad had no pistachios and browned edges on the lettuce. The sparkling wine was good as was the chardonnay. Lucky we had a discount voucher and they docked the price of the salad off the bill. Won't go back.

Ria Malay Kitchen has been one of our favourites over the years-consistently excellent food at a very fair price. With that in mind we ordered a take away on Saturday night-wanting to support our locals. Not sure if the restaurant has changed hands but what a massive disappointment. A seafood dish that was all sauce and very little seafood for $35 and a beef dish for $30 that was again hugely overpriced. We really felt ripped off. Will not be going back-pity.

Can’t fault the food. And Although our order was taken about 5 mins after we sat down, it took about 50 mins to get a drink (by then I’d helped myself to a jug of water and poured us glasses) and 2 mins later our food came out. I understand being busy means there might be delays but I’ve never waited that long for a drink. I would have been happy with a glass of water while we waited but after asking twice, I gave up.

Decent Malay Food in a nicer setting that you normally find good malay food, I used to use this place for dates with the uninitiated with Malay food, Good starting place for those unfamiliar with the usual asian restaurant experience, A little bit nicer, and the food is up to standard
Pak Makanan
Good enough food, but totally let down by underwhelming venue (noisy), weird staff, and rip off practice of bringing out continuous small bowls of rice at $6.00 each (serves 2) - as a group of 10 we copped a bill of $36 for boiled rice!!! Seriously? Never again.

This place was ok , not sure if we would go back. All dishes we ordered for dinner was tasty but serving size were on the small side. Service was friendly however could be more attentive and more accessible.

Plenty of other Malaysian choices in Perth that are less pretentious and more satisfying for the stomach and wallet.

DINNER - AMBIENCE // Good atmosphere as it is usually full or will get full by the time your food comes out. Service is always good and naturally lags a little as the night gets busy. FOOD // The dishes are packed full of flavour that leaving your tastebuds wanting more and your top button needing to be undone. RECOMMEND // Chinese Shredded Beef, Rendang Derlagi-lagi, Almond Chicken Korma

Nice restaurant. Decor was clean. Wait staff that were on duty were rushed but the restaurant wasn't full.

We ordered and after about 30minutes we received Maine's. The food was tasty, nice spice and texture but cold. It seemed that the meals sat awaiting delivery to the table. Shame as we may have been the unlucky ones.

See what happens next time.

Went here with 3 friends to start our Leederville Food Safari. We had a tasting plate each which was awesome. Service was quick and very friendly.

If you like your veggies this is not the place for you. Friends ordered me a vegetable curry but instead of telling them no can do they gave a container full of tofu and raw potato. There were three shavings of carrot, ten peas and a sprig of coriander. $24 thank you.

Visited on a Sunday evening. Staff are reasonably friendly and we got our food pretty fast. Serving sizes are small. Rendang curry was flavoursome however the meat was tough. Overall food was pretty good but not worth the price.

Has been quite some time since I’ve eaten here. Came for mid week dinner for 4 and the restaurant was pretty quiet. Friendly waitress let us have our pick of tables and we were promptly given menus. We ordered the lotus chips (delicious), roti (very good), the nyonya chicken curry (good), the Kleo chicken (tasty), mee goreng (delicious) and a bowl of curry laksa (ok, not a huge fan of the flavour of this one). All in all the food was pretty authentic - the curries taste-wise were great but would have been nicer if there were some potatoes or something a bit more interesting in the curry other than the chicken only (but this might just be the style of the dish). Service was friendly and attentive and vibe of the restaurant was good. Definitely a little on the pricier side but the quality of food was there. Would definitely recommend.

Big open restaurant with a really nice decor.
We came on a Tuesday night at 5.30pm. By 7pm, the smaller section of the restaurant was full.
Service was mostly good, a little pushy but OK. The food was good, their Satay sauce was true Satay and it was devine. We opted for the traditional food - Mee Goreng and Char Kway Teo and both were yummy.
I just found the music was pointlessly loud. When we first sat it was nice and quiet and we could have a normal conversation. Then the music was turned on and I had to ask for it to be turned down because the speaker was right next to our table. Even then it was still too loud once all the tables filled up. It just seemed overkill.

I just got this quarter filled container delivered from Ria that cost $30! This is totally unaccepable. I tried to call and complain and the phone number listed is for an 'office' that is closed. No way of contacting restaurant to rectify.

We came here based on the zomato rating, but were left extremely disappointed. The service was friendly but the starter (lotus chips) was served cold. The Mains took 50 minutes to come out, the sambal stir fry vegetables only had celery and beans, the Portuguese fish was overcooked and the rotis they serve were frozen. When we asked them about it they accepted that they serve store brought frozen rotis. I don't mean to be rude, it is just an account of our experience.

Had such a lovely evening here. The food was delicious and came out quickly. The staff were attentive and took our order quickly although it had got busy and once the plates were cleared we were not offered/asked about dessert which was disappointing as we had our eye on something. However highly recommend and we be back again.

Hubby and I went here for a dinner date. We ordered the Chicken Satay sticks for an entree and they were great. Chicken was moist and soft and the satay sauce was brilliant. Best Satay ever hubby said. We then ordered the Lamb Kari and the Chinese Shredded Beef. The Lamb was so very nice however a little hot for me (one chilli is too much for me) and the beef was soooo good. Last dish was a fried rice. I have never had rice taste so good. Price was a little high I think for what you got however we did take home leftovers (which daughter devoured the lamb as soon as we walked in the door). Will we go back - definitely and this time will take the kids.
Perth Foodie
The food was flawless, authentic Malaysian. We had a little bit of everything shared among friends. We also did the tuk-tuk a different night. Will be back again and again. Recommend the ginger beer to accomodate your tasty meal. 👍🏻

We were at Ria this weekend for our dinner. We ordered their nasi goreng and kung pao chicken. Rice was ok and not best and didn't like the kung pao chicken. Ambience was good and they have enough parking space outside. Service was good. Overall experience was average.
Raul Perth
Was really looking forward to eating at Ria with fond experiences of what it was like years ago. Unfortunately it was a massive disappointment. The chicken satay was ok but the sauce far too spicy for a satay. The almond chicken kurma was lovely, tender and aromatic. The killer was the slow cooked beef which was basically a bowl of oil with a few small bits of the gross rubbery parts of the beef. I was expecting a beautiful tender chunk of beef falling apart but instead got oil and water with some onion and tiny bits of inedible chunks. It almost seemed like we got the bottom of the pot with the worst bits left over. The waitress asked how the meal was so I told her the truth! The Maître d then came out and asked what was wrong and when I explained, she told me they cut the beef into small chunks to help them slow cook. What the?? I’m certainly no chef but I haven’t heard that before. Anyway at least they did the right thing and deducted it from the bill. I wonder if in this day and age of UberEATS (I did notice 4-5 drivers picking up orders while we were there) whether places like this are sacrificing quality for quantity of orders. Suffice to say I won’t be back.
Grumpy Diner
Friendly servoce, gteat menu, food was exceptional but I couldn’t persuade them to get me a large lemon, lime and bitters!
Seems very popular on a Friday evening but I will try it for lunch one day soon.
Foodie In Paradise
We came here based on their review but left being disappointed. The service was very friendly as we entered the restaurant. My friend trying to order "Teh Tarik" but the staff didn't even know what it is.
We ordered the beef rendang, papaya salad and the duck dish. The papaya salad taste nothing like a papaya salad that I had tried before, pretty tasteless. The beef rendang and the other dish taste very average. Overall, I don't find the food being authentic.
Price was on the pricey side for Malaysian cuisine. Thumbs up for their service but personally won't return for their food. There are a lot more better Malaysian restaurants in Perth with cheaper price to go to.

I went to Ria a last night for dinner with my partner. In fairness it was NYE so environmentally probably not typical (pretty noisy) & hopefully not typical for service (someone please bring me a drink? Please?)
On the plus side, the food was tasty & plenty of it (‘Feed Me’ menu for $55 pp where the chef selects got us 3 starts, 4 mains + rice + 2 desserts between 2 of us)
On the down side, it infuriates me when food allergies are not taken seriously. Having stated I needed g/f (wheat free is too bloody hard to explain), we were initially brought very lovely-looking wheat-filled food. And when I checked (*always* ask!) ‘is that g/f?’ Firstly the waiter didn’t know, then having checked came back to tell me one dish was vegetarian.. like it was just another ‘awkward eater’ type food so that’s ok, right? After I sent that back they seemed to twig that ‘chef chooses but g/f’ means actually g/f & they confirmed for each dish. So they redeemed themselves somewhat.
But Ria, if you’re reading this.. for me I’d be ill for a few days. For others it could be much worse. There’s more to being g/f safe than flagging your menu with GF/GFA
Mel
Friendly staff and overall nice space. Some of the tables are too close together causing patrons to bump chairs and feel like your joining into someone else's conversation.

Food was nice, and good variety for GF & DF. Our starters were the favourite, squid and the pork. Ordered the chefs special Beef Arab, nice flavour but beef was not tender.

Will return, but change my order.
HungryHippo122
I've eaten here on multiple occasions and have consistently been pleased with the welcoming atmosphere and attentive service. The Chinese beef was sticking and flavoursome. The vibe of the restaurant is busy and energetic, making it a good choice for groups or couples.

Came here on recommendation. Atmosphere was welcoming and restaurant decorated nicely. Service was friendly however our first drinks order came out with one incorrect drink and the second order later on in the evening never arrived - we had to follow up on it. The food was tasty enough but found the beef bun (a chef specialty) the most disappointing. It was raining outside and at one point when the rain was coming down hard I felt a few small drops on my head - must be a slight leak in the roof above the couch. Unfortunately I wouldn't come rushing back. We had the spring rolls, pork belly and wings for entree and the beef bun, Kai Lan with pork belly, kway teow noodles, shredded beef and Borneo fish for mains. The shredded beef and fish were our best dishes.
Ilovebeansprouts
Modern Malay dining place with a nice ambience. Food on the whole was alright, but we've had better. Did enjoy the crisp Lotus Chips with tasty sambal; a great starter. Peppered Squid and Borneo Fish have great flavours, but would have liked the squid & fish pieces to be more golden and crunchier on the outside. Borneo Fish was also lacking some sauce- the toasted coconut is a great topping, but it gets a bit too much and dry to eat after a while without any sauce. We were glad we had a curry to go with the fish, but was a bit let down by the potatoes being unevenly cooked; had a few bites of firm ones.
Nonetheless, staff were attentive and service was excellent, hence it was still a good dining experience.

I liked it. Great selection of food and pretty tasty. I will be back. Interesting layout and interior decor. ...............................

Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. Nice big restaurant, so I was able to walk in without a booking, but still a great vibe.

The shredded pepper was fantastic! A very generous size dish, best to share!

They also offer complimentary sparkling water which is a great added bonus!

Delicious food!! Only negative was a long wait for our meal, but worth the wait. But it was a Saturday night so I think I'll let that slide. Also extremely friendly staff. I'd definitely go back
India Stone
One of the best restaurants in Leederville. The atmosphere is so welcoming and the staff are always happy. The food is absolutely amazing and i recommend sharing as it'll be a lot better than having your own plate.

Came here for the first time tonight and really enjoyed the food, service and especially the sparking water on tap. Roti bread and fried prawns were a stand out. Curry chicken and coriander and pepper chicken were also worth a try. I would definitely return!

Very nice food and one of my preferred Malaysian places in Perth. A bit more expensive than many of the other though. Worth booking ahead on weekends, it can fill up
Spicy_occasions
These guys have a fantastic lunch special we go to almost weekly. The Laksa is fantastic! Nice atmosphere in the restaurant, and the service has never been off the mark. Consistent.
Melburnianlaura
Brilliant food with lots of seafood options, big portion sizes, nice atmosphere, very friendly service. Great date restaurant. The location isn't the best and would be better if it was a little bit further down Oxford St but not bad.
Nichola Starkey
Beautiful food! Love the crispy pork belly and the lotus chips. Nonya chicken was a must! And the cocktails were amazing! Very busy place and you need to book but it's worth it. Great prices too.
Louise Armstrong
Food is ok. Duck is just that, duck with no veg. Clay pot was tasty and randang was good. Snow pea and prawns will be good for pescaterians. Chinese shredded beef is really good.
Nicole Reeley
I have searched for an authentic Malay restaurant in Perth for quite a while and this place doesn't disappoint. On top, you can book the rickshaw and they will ferry you between their local restaurants for a degustation, but Ria Malay is the pick of the bunch
Casey
Ordered UberEATS from here for lunch. The mee goreng- it lacked flavour. Just tasted like abc sauce was added for colour with some fresh cut chillies. They didn't even pack cutlery to eat with. The only thing I enjoyed was the fresh cut veggies.
David
Ria Malay definitely has some interesting and great tasting food. However, I've been here a few times and the service is a bit slow, even without many customers. Expect to spend more than an hour here if you order more than dish.

We booked a table at 7 and food literally arrived at 8. Food was good but after the 40 min wait after ordering there was nothing to fix the sour taste in my mouth. Staff was inefficient, unconcerned and scarce. They skirted around our table while we impatiently waited. We struggled to even flag one down to take photo of our table. After food arrived though about 3 separate waiters asked if everything was going well (presumably to repair the damage).

We made a reservation for 545pm on a Friday night for two and were seated next to the cashier counter. Most of the tables were empty. We were not happy with where we sat. But we can't be bothered to change. Luckily the chicken satay and the chicken wings made up for it. I had the laksa and my darling had the pear salad, which were both ok.

I have just completed the Valentines day banquet which was a 4-course Malaysia 'feast' which was quite the disappointment in many ways. An hour after arriving at our table we had only received the entree of 4 oysters. The portions were crazy small and poorly presented. The courses weren't very Malaysian inspired. The manager on floor was very understanding and offered to email us vouchers in compensation but the poor service and food quality did spoil the night.
Some Like It Hot
The beef rendang was a bit of a miss for me, beef not overly tender and the sauce nowhere near as good as my fav Malaysian in Melbourne. Even the roti could've been better. My friends crispy beef was pretty good though. Nice venue with pleasant service.

Cannot complain about the food. They were very accomodating when we ordered the buns which were served as three, they were happy to serve us four. But.... I made a booking for four people and we were sat what felt like on top of the cashiers desk. I'm not one to complain but I politely asked to move as there were plenty of empty tables. This request was denied as they were "fully booked" we accepted this as it was a Wednesday night in Leederville. As the night progressed it became obvious that they were not fully booked as the restaurant only stayed half full with low turn over. It was apparent that they wanted us as close to the front so that they appeared busy. I don't appreciate being used as a marketing object, especially when the it makes the patrons feel uncomfortable.
Trent.savage
Good food and good service, my only complaint is the price. Waaaay overpriced for what for is. The beef rendang is terrible but all of the other dishes were great. I'd rather eat at Nasilemak Korner any day.
Renato
Nice, professional yet casual setup with friendly and attentive staff. The food matched - it was delicious. We had the pepper squid for entree, which was nice but nothing special. The nyonya chicken curry was divine and the star of the meal. The fish with sambal was also delicious. Will try again.

$17.50 for 5 chicken wings! $17.50!!!!?? Are you kidding me!? That is $3.50 per wing for the mathematicians out there! This was an entre' ordered by myself and partner, you think they would chuck in 1 wing to even it out. Mains were decent, ordered the char kway teow and nyonya chicken curry with rice. Service was good. Place is over priced, other similar establishments around that do food just as well for half the price so will not be returning.

Ria is nowhere near the standard it used to be in the days when Deborah Ting and Richard Serrano were there. It was so loved back then, and it showed! We went to Ria as part of the Leederville Food Safari. The only special part of the evening was the rickshaw ride. Kitsch was the best of the three places. After being asked to choose from a very restricted Ria menu our food came out quickly, before drinks were served. We got our drinks after main couse was finished. The lamb kari was of a good standard and tasty. The prawn and fish curry was lukewarm and underwhelming. The pear and pistachio salad had been pre-prepared and was not particularly fresh. The service was rushed and impersonal....we felt we were an afterthought. The Leederville Food Safari was disappointing and not the special experience it could and should be.
Lady X
Had the $55 pp feed me banquet. To be honest the food was below average, except for the satay. The fish dish was too salty, the pear salad was slightly unusual and the curry was not flavourful enough. Dessert was creative but average - I can see how they were trying to fuse Malay flavours into the dessert eg. Fried ice cream goreng pisang style. Disappointing and not worth the money
Alias
Friendly staff headed by Eugene, fantastic reliably good food & you will always leave with a full belly! Also don't miss their degustations!!
Foodieperth
We ordered the pork riblets, mantou beef buns and the chinese shredded beef. The mantou buns came with lovely pulled beef inside a soft white fluffy bun and some sweet and tangy sauce. The pork riblets were tasty, with a lovely sweet sauce to dip the pork in. The shredded beef was sweet as well😂and so tender and flavoursome.

Ria is a delightful establishment and a favourite among those who frequent the area. While defined as a Malaysian restaurant, it offers more of a fusion of delicacies from China, India and Portugal.

The staff are well organised amongst the hustle and bustle of what is a busy place. Dishes are nicely presented and evidence that only the freshest ingredients comes from the depth of flavour offered by each dish.

If you're in the mood for Asian cuisine Ria is a solid choice...

Yummy! Great curries. Good selection with fun dishes. Cocktails too, great for a group of friends heading out. Parking out front or behind which is very handy

Came here last night and had the "Feed Me" tasting menu. The food is good, but not outstanding. The lotus chips and dipping sauce - whatever it was , were a standout, as was the beef curry with naan. Decent enough.
LittleAsianGirl
Came here for the first the other day. Not bad. The yellow rice is delicious. The various types of curries we ordered were not too spicy. Lots of flavour. The Portuguese baked fish is really tasty, although a little different to what I am used to, it is very similar and almost authentic.
DeeBaby
Amazing food, fast friendly service and chilled atmosphere. It was slightly expensive though but the food is such high quality I think it's definitely worth it!
Danielle
Ate here last night in a group of 3. The beef satays were tough so we struggled to eat them and the pork belly wasn't crispy.
Staff were all nice though
InMyFaceHole
Friday night meal with a friend. We tried the pork taco and peppered squid for entrees. The tacos were nice but very small and you only got 2 for $11. The squid was really tasty, fresh, lightly battered with a creamy/tangy dipping sauce.
We then moved onto shared mains. We tried one of the chicken curries (I forgot which, sorry), a serving of rota (delish) and stir fried bok choy (a fresh and light side which I really enjoyed). The curry was a rather small serving for $27 but it tasted incredible and with the other dishes, it filled us right up!! We even had left overs for a little takeaway.
The decor is simple but very funky. My friend said it has a very Melbourne feel to it.
Our waitress helped us choose what to order and was very attentive with water top ups and getting is the bill. A great night out!!

Always a yes from me!! Chinese shredded beef, nyonya chicken curry and roti are amazing. Will always recommend to others can't wait to go back.

Incredible! I have never been disappointed going to Ria. The atmosphere, service and menu are always on point and the food is absolutely amazing! The pork belly entree just melts in your mouth and I would recommend everyone to try the crispy chilli beef on the main menu, it is so full of flavour and cooked to perfection! The wine list matches the food style perfectly and the drinks list is great. I seriously can not commend the amazing staff enough, their service is fantastic and even when the restaurant is full, you still feel like you're the only person there. I honestly could not fault Ria in any way, shape or form!
Kaidi
Great food and great service, even when it got pretty busy later on in the night. Probably a bit more expensive, than your average Asian restaurant.
Adelarina
I absolutely adore the food at this restaurant. Authentic Malaysian cuisine, a beautiful atmosphere right in the heart of Leederville and so many gorgeous cocktails.
Unfortunately our night was let down by the service.
We booked a table of 6 and ordered a few cocktails to start for my sisters 19th birthday - divine.
We then all ordered the 'Feed Me' menu and were told to take it slow as it is a lot of food.. The starters came, then more starters, then what we thought was mains... then more mains came. We all looked at one another and wondered what we were going to do. The wait staff came out and told us we were meant to tell them when we were full...? Now, we've done this menu twice before and never have we been told this. We checked the menu and it also didn't state this? Confused, we asked to take the food away so it wouldn't go to waste and were told that, no, we couldn't because that wasn't how the feed me menu worked - otherwise everyone would just come in and take food home... OK, way to make us feel like greedy thieves... we sat there as they angrily took away our plates. They came back a few minutes later and told us we could take the food 'otherwise it'll just end up in the trash'.... OK, now we feel even worse...
Dessert was then served. As we came into the restaurant and placed our food order, we specifically advised of a walnut, pine nut and hazelnut allergy. Specifically those nuts cause an anaphylactic reaction to a guest at the table. The dessert came out... covered in walnuts. I think perhaps some people don't realise that a nut allergy can actually kill a person, but I really thought restaurants understood this. We also watched her write down each nut as she took the order. Anyway, we made a comment at the end, just so they were aware and could tell the kitchen.
All in all, we were happy, but the service really let us down. Perhaps it was because we booked on a busy Friday night. Who knows. I think we'll wait a while before we go back there though...

I have eaten at Ria at least twice before, 1 to 2 years ago, and was really excellent. What a disappointing miss it was this time (Sat 14th May 2016), especially after I talked it up to the 2 friends I was with. We ordered for starters: pork belly, peppered squid and spicy soy bean pods. By far the worst pork belly I have ever had. Not only was it literally cold on the inside of every pork 'cube' (clearly was pre-made and reheated) but the crackling was a wobbly layer of fat and skin.....the crackling is the best part of pork belly! While the squid was tasty, it was very oily, and there was nothing peppered about it. The soy bean pods were....well soy bean pods....pretty hard to get them wrong, but again, nothing spicy about them (at all!) as described on the menu. For mains we had the Kleo Chicken and Malaccam Lamb Semur (with plain rice). 55 minutes later, we were still waiting for our mains. When they finally arrived, the lamb was at best, room temperature. Our waitress took it back and returned it only marginally warmer, and with much more gravy/sauce, that this time had an over powering flavour of cloves. A real miss. The chicken at least came warm, and was quite tasty, but both dishes were very overpowered with too many spices and enough salt to keep my blood pressure high for the next 10 years. The only plus was our waitress who was apologetic and polite. We were charged for everything, and won't be rushing back any time soon.

Have been here twice, and I was slightly disappointed the second time around. Our first visit saw us blown away with the amazing coconut fish and shredded beef. They were taste sensations and I had been thinking about these dishes ever since! On our second visit, we were sad to find that the roti served up was a frozen roti which can be purchased from any Asian store. The yellow curry was lacking in salt. The shredded beef was amazing as per our first visit. For a higher class Malaysian restaurant, I would expect to see Roti's which have been made in house. This is really a minimum in my book as I could have stayed home to cook my own Frozen Roti's! 😟

I keep coming back due to the bold flavours and menu variety.

I recommend everything that I have tried:
The pork belly melts in your mouth. The crispy prawns are perfectly crispy. The lotus chips are crunchy and a great side dish (especially for some respit if you order something hot). The Nyonya Tofu salad is spicy and delicious.

I love all of the chicken curries, but my favorite is the Kaptian Chicken Curry. The Chinese shredded beef is so good! I had never had this style before, the beef is crunchy and full of flavour. The Rendang Terlagi-Lagi is good, but I have had better. The Char Kay Tow is nice, but its not one of their strong dishes.

The first time I came, the unlimited free still and sparkling water option made me feel spoiled, however after tasting the sparkling... you're better off getting the still water.

The staff are always friendly and attentive, and I will keep coming back til I have tried everything on the menu.

Have visited Ria once before, about 12 or so months ago with a large group and it was fantastic. Unfortunately this visit didn't even come close.
We ordered chicken satay sticks, crispy chicken wings, crispy prawns, nyonya fish, roti and rice. None of these dishes hit their mark.
Chicken Satay: this came close! Tasty sauce, but I found the chicken itself to be oily. And, with two sticks and three diners... something did not compute. I've never ordered satay at a restaurant and only received two skewers before (3-4 is the usual).
Crispy chicken wings: neither crispy, nor wings. What?
Crispy prawns: deep fried so had some crunch, but very oily. The dipping sauce was atrocious.. sugary sweet mayo.
Nyonya fish: again, so oily. No sauce to speak of, despite a tangy tamarind sauce listed on the menu. $30 for one fish fillet 😥
Rice, gluggy. Roti, no crisp .. didn't seem freshly made.
All up $85, and we only drank water. What a rip off given the (poor) quality.
Service was pretty good .. although, we were sat near the door and it was freezing. Staff weren't allowed to shut the door unfortunately as there were outside diners.
Nope.

Came here for dinner. Ordered the nyonya chicken curry, portugese baked fish and nasi kunyit. Waited a good hour for our food to arrive. By then I was happy to eat anything. Was very disappointed with the food. No flavour and not authentic whatsoever. We booked 5 days in advance and yet they seated us right next to the heater. Asked the waitress to move us, she stated she'd ask the owner to turn down or shut off the heating and completely ignored my suggestion to move. I clearly noticed 4 other tables which were empty. The manager finally shut the heater off after an hour of noticing me fan myself with my napkin. Don't recommend this place at all. There are plenty of authentic Malaysian restaurants in Perth. Definitely not coming back after a very unpleasant experience.

Cannot fault this place. The service was prompt and the staff were friendly and also very knowledgable of the menu and there ingredients/flavours.

The menu is designed to share but I still feel you can get away with ordering your own dish for yourself as the serving size is still as if you are ordering a main meal.

The food was delicious. I could not fault this place and I would definitely go again. Although they have a lot of peanuts in the meals, they do have very nice peanut options for all the allergic ones, like me.

Some girlfriends and I came here for dinner last night and it didn't disappoint. We started with the satay chicken skewers which were tender and beautifully cooked. The peanut sauce was up there with the best I've had in Perth. We then had our own dishes for mains. I ordered the Dalcah Kedah which was very nice, although the potatoes could have been a bit crispier. The service was a bit rushed, but I forgive them for them given it was a busy Thursday night (which is no mean feat in quiet ole Perth).

Went here with a group of friends for dinner. The evening quickly took a downward turn when my partner asked the waitress which dishes were peanut free. Instead of saying "sorry we don't have any peanut allergy friendly dishes", she very bluntly cut him off with "there's nothing I suggest you leave". I'm not sure the owners would be pleased to know that on of their staff was rude like this to their customers!! Her demeanor was unacceptable and we will not be returning.

Best satay chicken sticks ever! The chicken meat was tender and juicy, the sauce was delicious and, well, it is a must try dish for anyone that comes to this restuarant. The beef satay however, was just too weird. It had this sour taste to it, which might be the thing they used to soften the meat, but honestly it just made the beef taste off.

For our main, we ordered the nyonya chicken curry, beef rendang and Portuguese fish. The beef was the most popular dish among my dinner mates tonight, the meat was tender and juicy, making a nice contrast with the more chewy coconut pieces in the curry.
The nyonya chicken was quite big in portions, but tasted okay, nothing spectacular about it.
The fish was another big hit! The amount of chilli sauce slathered on top was perfect for the fish fillet to be flavourful but not too salty.

The dessert combination dish was very disappointing though.

Amazing food, one of my favourite places in perth. Always look forward to the nyonya chicken curry and the chinese shredded beef. Staff are always very efficient

Good vegetarian curry, great Roti and good service. Lotus chips as a starter were tasty. I was disappointed to find they've changed their eggplant salad a bit - I love that salad and while it's still good I do miss the old version. I ate here with a big group and other than my husband saying the squid in his fish curry was a bit on the chewy side everyone seemed happy with their meals.

Was really looking forward to our meal here last night - but left SO disappointed. Service was great and free sparkling water is much appreciated. Our waitress sold us on the 'Feed Me' menu for $55pp as it was made up of Ria's signature dishes we told her we loved authentic Malaysian food with lots of spice - she understood. First couple of dishes just ok - spiced bean pods and a chicken & beef satay stick to share. Next dish Peppered Squid supposed to be fried in Ria's own spice blend - well they were just normal battered squid rings,as bland as you would expect from the fish shop across the road - no hint of spice or pepper at all. By this time we are feeling a bit let down and looking forward to some curry flavours and wet dishes, but no. Next dish to come out is Black Pepper and Coriander Fried Chicken - one dry fried dish following another! The chicken was tender but there was no flavour at all, and certainly no hint of coriander or pepper.
Next Eggplant salad - just awful, soggy and tasteless and Chinese Shredded Beef - beef strips tough and sauce so sweet could not possibly eat. We sat astonished - this surely cannot be a showcase of Ria's Signature Dishes? We complained politely and the waitress brought the Nonya Chicken Curry - my God, this should be ok but no, the curry had raw curry powder flavours - not cooked long enough, and made using a commercial curry powder. If you are charging $27.50 for a chicken curry, it should at the very least be made from scratch from fresh ground spices and cooked long and slowly - there should not be a scrap of commercial curry powder in the kitchen or the prices should reflect this like they do in the cheap Northbridge restaurants. Also the Rotis are commercial and not made in house and are not cooked long enough therefore taste like thick pastry. This used to be our go to Asian, but will never go back, such a waste of money. We did speak to Management and they did take a token amount off our bill as a gesture of good will, thank you - but I did not feel we were being listened to, and she just wanted to defend the food and the kitchen's cooking. With so many fantastic Asian restaurants in Perth doing kapow flavoured food, Ria had better lift it's game quickly because real foodies can't be fooled!

First time on Tuesday night. Early booking at 5.45pm as we were going to Luna that night so was fairly quiet. Service was extremely prompt and friendly. Bitter Mango cocktail...yummers. I had Veg and Tofu curry which was divine. Hubbie had chicken Curry and loved it. We shared a portion of pilau rice and a couple
Of roti's. Rice was fluffy...roti's maybe too much like pastry but still tasty. Portion size was huge..I couldn't finish mine. Will definitely be back.

Terrible food. Just plain horrid, rice was dry, food was tasteless and unfresh. One of the worst octopus and prawn salads iv tasted in my life. Avoid at all cost.

I have passed this restaurant many times and it is always busy, so I suspect the food would have been really good. It is fabulous indeed.

Everything was so delicious. The borneo fish was cooked to perfection, the slow cooked beef was so tasty and tender, mee goreng was good.

The service was brilliant and the waiters were very friendly. Would love to come back to try other on menu

Wonderful service each time. Food has been less than desirable both times we've been. Anything that is deep fried is soggy and not at all tasty and the rest of the food just has zero wow factor. The coconut fish was pretty good, still too much coconut and not enough fish though. Quite disappointing really!

Went as a family of 7, each ordered a plate and rice to suit, and came out to be around $35 a head!! So good! (Not inc drinks) Staff were lovely, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was great and suited the vibe of the modern twist of traditional Malay food. Highly recommend the Traditional Satay Sticks to start, (Ask for extra sauce, trust me you'll want it.) and the Beef Rendang Cury and the Nyonya Chicken Curry for mains! 10/10 can recommend!

Delicious Malay food in a great location. Good service, nice venue, tasty flavoursome food. Can't fault a thing and will definitely be back. Came on a Monday and they do BYO and get very busy but service and time for food to come out was still great.

Very ordinary and non - authentic cuisine. Very disappointed with the roti they used, frozen roti. Seafood Tamarind the prawns not even got colour or taste just boiled and put on top of the curry. We have much better Malay food in town.

Disappointed on my return to ria after its changed hands.
The service was good, friendly and helpful.
However the food wasn't authentic and small portions for the price.
Won't be rushing back in a hurry, such a shame as it was such a solid performer in the past

Really wanted to like it but I'm sorry to say very disappointing food. I usually order in freestyle fashion which means whatever takes my fancy regardless if it's only entrees main desserts or some random combo thereof. Tried the pork belly and beef in lettuce cups and cooling plate of pickles. Both were swimming in heavy sauces which obscured the flavours of the actual meat. Pork came with not much else maybe some mushrooms? Hard to say as they were also obscured by the sauce. Beef wasn't so much in cups as served next to flattish cos leaves for you to assemble a 'wrap'. Menu said melange of veg with beef but it was a few bits more like garnish than any discernible veg. The beef looked and tasted like what you might find at a food court or similar lowbrow establishment. Basically it was chewy over cooked beef strips in heavy sauce. I usually like pickles but this was an odd combo & pretty bland. I'm not a connoisseur of 'traditional' Malay food so I can't comment on that but if this was it I am unpleasantly surprised. Overpriced too. The sparkling water was nice. Sorry didn't get pic of beef I was too overwhelmed with disappointment.

So tasty and delish! My favourite restaurant! I've never had better Malaysian, even in Malaysia! I recommended the Chinese shredded beef, the kleo chicken, kapitan chicken, char Kway teo with a side of roti! Amazing.

First timer at Ria....... Loved it and will be back.
Fish and prawn dish was amazing!
Chicken Kleo was surprisingly good, subtle favours.
Kway teo noodles were good and the lamb Kari was great too.
Only negative was the cost of roti!
Beer was cold and they got a tip!
Enough said.

Eaten here before and we enjoyed another great meal last night. Reasonable value. Nice wine and couple of entrées and couple of mains all came to $50/head.

This place is fantastic. I've been twice and always enjoy the food, service and ambience. Free sparkling water, gotta love that! I will definitely be back, again and again ;)

Definitely not a place to go if you're Malaysian looking for authentic Malaysian food.

I was intrigued by the menu when I stumbled upon RIA online, and decided to bring the family. Understanding that Ria is serving Malaysian dishes with some fusion, we expected to be blown away but the meals were disappointing.

Flavours were bland in pork belly, and fusion of flavour did not "fuse" as well as we would've liked in most of our mains. Not to mention that the entrees size were very small (for the price!) and I've never had char kuey teow quite like that before (bland! And didn't look too appetising in the way it was presented).

All in all, I wouldn't go back again.

Our Leederville Food Safari started here and the entree and cocktails kicked off a great night. The safari is a great way to experience Ria, Kitsch and Foam Bar all in one progressive dinner. Highly recommend.

A fantastic meal to share amongst friends! Perfect for a group situation where you can sample a great selection of curries and delicious Malaysian dishes by ordering a variety to put in the middle. A great location in the heart of leederville! The beef rendang and the almond chicken are our must haves!

Very very disappointed.
As a Leederville resident of over ten years I have heard such great things about Ria. I was delighted when friends suggested we go there for a special dinner together. We waited over 45 minutes for food to arrive, without so much as a ' sorry'.
The food itself was unsubtle, with heavy, salty ( to the point of inedibility in one case) and oily sauces, killing the flavours of the ingredients. The two vegetarians in the party were particularly poorly served. The pear and pistachio salad, which sounded crisp, light and delicious, was covered in a heavy, salty dressing, and none of the flavours of the salad could be appreciated. The snow pea dish had promise, with the peas themselves perfectly cooked, but the dressing was so salty, my dining companions were reduced to wiping it off the peas with napkins in order to be able to eat them.
The lemongrass fish was quite nice, but not a patch on the same dish available in The Tamarind in Mt. Hawthorn for a considerably lower price.
The lotus chips with chilli mayonnaise dip were good. They arrived about 5 minutes after the main courses (about 50 minutes after we sat down) . Thank goodness we had asked for all dishes to be brought when they were ready, otherwise we might still be waiting for the main course.

When asked for a spare bowl, so that one of the party could eat Asian style, with bowl and chopsticks, one of our waitresses simply refused, saying it was 'impossible'. The more obliging server to the next table was kind enough to bring the bowl when asked. Our waitress also consistently refilled two of the party's water glasses whilst ignoring the other two.

I will certainly never return to Ria, and I cannot recommend it to anyone.
