Review Nepal Dining Room - Malvern

Ashish Rimal
Decent taste of Nepalese food in fine dinning, Momo are best. Momos are really flavourful, never felt difference on taste.

Lovely Nepalese restaurant. Quite an exhaustive menu and lively atmosphere. The food was good - momos, chicken chow chow, goat tarkari, roti, raisin pulao, grilled lamb and grilled chicken. The momos were seasoned well and the sauce with it was spicy! The goat tarkari was cooked well but lacked enough salt. The grilled items were average and the pulao was good. Overall a good experience.

Went there with a couple of my non Nepali friends and had a lovely time today. The waitress was very attentive and kind. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely too. The food here is great but being a Nepali I feel that some dishes were missing the authentic and traditional flavours. Although I feel that the momos could’ve been more flavourful, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience. Would recommend trying Chicken Sekuwa and Goat curry, they were the highlight of my evening. Thank you team for your hospitality today.

I have been here couple of times now and both times the service were very good and food is also great. One of the best Nepali food in Melbourne. They are a bit more fancier than the usual Nepali places but worth it. Highly recommend the Platter for taste testing to see what you like and order more if those . The eggplant Pumpkin Tharkari was really yummy too. Very accommodating too with BYO etc😃

We love Nepal Dining. The food is always fresh and beautiful. Great to eat in or take away. Feel good after eating it. It’s our regular go to meal. Staff are all lovely and welcoming.

A gem of a find in Malvern! Meeting up with a couple of friends who live near by, the Nepal Dining Room offers a great menu and helpful staff. The food is top notch and fills its namesake's brief. Book early to avoid missing out on Friday and Saturday nights!

Two thumbs up for this place 👍 we went all vegetarian including momos and mains and I have to say choosing Nepali food will never go wrong even if you a vegan 😍

Don't come here and don't get fooled by the reviews. This place is terrible, the veggies in the noodles were not cooked at all. When we raised the issue, the owner was rude and told us they are stir fried and that's how it's prepared. Save your money and terrible experience, there are tons of better Nepalese restaurants with much better food and gold standard in service. This place sucks!!!!

We were quite pleasantly surprised to find a great Nepali restaurant which actually serves fantastic nepalese food with a twist in the south-east suburb of melbourne. All the food we ordered were warm, flavoursome and quite tasty. I loved the chilly momo most and would again order the pork belly. The place had great ambience , good food and very attentive staffs. I highly recommend this place and will love to come again and again.

We ate here for the first time last night. The service was fast and friendly. Mixed starters were very flavoursome and interesting. 3 mains plus rice and bread exceptional. Will definitely be back.

Fabulous atmosphere & delicious food! The Momos were a definite fav! The staff were super friendly, thank you for a great night :)

Delicious food, friendly service, reasonable price. All around great experience. We went there today for the first time, but it’s definitely not going to be our last one!

Our go-to place just about every Friday!

Great tasting food and a very friendly atmosphere. Always a pleasure.
Jenny Barnes
Fabulous food and geat service. We ordered a variety of dishes and loved them all.
Joel Hinch
Over all a bit on the pricey side. Entrees are extremely simple and not very memorable, ingredient or flavour wise. Mains are wonderful, flavoursome and made with lovely meat. The dessert was very lazily done.

Zomato Rating 3.5
A chance conversation with a friend who was singing the praises of Nepal Dining Room led us to dine there and it was fabulous. Fortunately there was an option to choose mild, medium or hot in the heat scale of some of their dishes which was great and certainly worked for us. Everything we tried had superb flavour and the service was friendly. We will definitely return to try more from their menu.
Rianknair
Very very happy that they have a play area for crazy toddlers like mine and the staff are very patient and friendly.

Tried one of their mains at the Queen Vic night market. It consisted of a salad/ raita, Chamre rice and Nepali style chilli chicken. The chilli chicken was not as expected - we had something different in mind. They also served a red chilli sauce with the food and reminded us that it was super spicy and oh man it was so so hot! It got mixed with the chicken and we couldn’t enjoy it well. The rice and the salad was okay. We enjoyed the chilli sauce but it was too hot to handle.

Tried the dumplings and pork belly rice from Nepal dining room at the Melbourne Hawker 88 night market. The chicken momos were delicious and had just the right crisp. The pork and rice was delicious too, packed with flavour!

Yummy yummy!
Alvin Lee
Tried the Pork Belly with Bok Choy at Hawker88 held at Queen Victoria Market. I would’ve definitely have gotten more food from here if I didn’t eat so much before this. The Pork Belly was delicious and melted in the mouth. The mono chicken looked really good. Would definitely be interested in checking out the actual restaurant!

It may look like your average casual restaurant in an obscure part of a strip of shops where foot traffic isn't ever at a high, but it's definitely worth stopping in at Nepal Dining Room for a really delicious meal.

Admittedly, this was my first time trying Nepalese food, but I love Indian and I know they're a little similar, so thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did, because the food was fantastic. The restaurant itself is nicely decked out. It's got a slight modern warehouse type feel to it, but there's ample room (but with small tables), and beautiful smells coming from the kitchen.

I ordered the Pan Fried Sekuwa, which are pieces of chicken thigh fillets marinated with mustard leaves, yoghurt, garlic, ginger and cumin. It was so delicious and came with a mini refreshing salad of cucumber and onion and tomato etc. A really good start to the meal. Following that, I ordered the Chicken Curry for my main (which came with butternut pumpkin) and plain rice. It was beautiful and fresh and while the chicken wasn't as tender as the entree, it was still packed with flavour and texture.

The service was good. Food came out all together and correctly and within a reasonable time frame, and the prices are worth it for what you get. Street parking is plenty along that side and portion of Waverly Road and I really look forward to trying it again another time.

Thank you for a very tasty dinner last night. I’ve been driving past the restaurant for ages and always wanted to try. As soon as we walked in we could smell how good it was going to be. We will be back!

Flavourful Nepal food with a little bit fusion with India. Goat curry, pork belly and momo is to die for. Will come back to try other dishes!

Good place with decent look. Menu had a lot of inventive dishes. A western approach to nepalese food, dishes are bit toned down but, this place definitely has a place in a expansive nepalese food scene. Don’t expect to get super spicy food but expect to get fresh quality food here.
service was good aswell.
The.Top.Lifestylee
The food was very flavoursome and tasty, although quite pricey. The food was delicious but would have preferred more of a sharing style of more dishes, although due to every dish being around $20+, they were not the biggest serving size, sharing wasn’t really an option if you were hungry. Overall the quality of ingredients tasted nice and the flavour were delicious. The service was lovely and it had a good atmosphere.

I'm giving 2 stars just for the good service and cleanliness. Food was ok but nowhere near authentic Nepalese cuisine. Those who don't know how Nepalese food tastes, may like it. We ordered vegetarian and chicken chilli momos, chicken chow chow, goat curry and chicken chilli. Vegetarian momos were stuffed with potatoes which is unusual. Goat curry was the best out of all. Rice wasn't fresh and chapatis were undercooked.

Not sure how this place is rated so highly. Got a delivery, "traditional" goat curry with pulaw rice. Extremely disappointed. Westernised tomato curry, the rice had no hint of ghee in it. I don't have a problem with restaurants severing westernised curries but don't use the word traditional. Felt cheated on a really hungry night. Did I mention it was supposed to be slow cooked?
It was our first time trying Nepalese food on Thursday. Prior to us coming, I “consulted” my Nepalese colleague about the must-tries of Nepalese cuisine.

With some guidance from her, we started with a selection of Chicken momos, Lamb momos and Pork Choila.

The dumplings themselves tasted rather similar to Chinese potstickers, but the chutney drizzled over the top made a delightful difference.

The Pork Choila was fantastic! Packed full of flavour, these little smoky and tender pork belly pieces were so enjoyable that we contemplated ordering another serve.

For mains, we had goat curry, cauliflower and chamre rice. The goat curry was light and delicate, laced with hints of spices and went well with the Nepalese rice which had a distinct note of turmeric coupled with cumin seeds. The cauliflower, on the other hand, was rather ordinary to our taste buds.

Service from whom we can only assume is the owner himself, was personable. Despite having to mind both the kitchen and front of house, he took the time to chat and check on us.

Overall, it was a pleasant introduction to a cuisine that’s new to us. Whilst not all the dishes knocked our socks off, it won’t deter us from coming back to try other menu items.

This restaurant really deserves its high rating!
Tasty, healthy food, BYO wine, helpful and friendly service, pleasant environs, easy parking plus discount from Entertainment Book.
What more could you ask for?
Nepalese food is quite varied, so hopefully in the future a seasonal menu, will be on offer.
Well worth a return visit!
I love coming here for a quick family catch up during the week or takeaway on a Friday night. The food is all very clean and not oily. I love the tapas platter for starters as you get to nibble on a bit of everything. The goat curry is the standout dish! The only thing i don't like on the menu is the Roti, but I think I'm used to the Thai Roti which is hideously unhealthy where as this one is a healthy version

We were lucky to attend the opening of the momo festival coming up on March 23-25 at the velodrome food truck festival. The night was great. The owners and chefs were soooooo lovely... Engaging, polite, genuine people. We loved the evening.
The momos had so much flavour! Each momo had its own design so looked different too. Chicken momos were our favourite (non chilli one) . The dessert momos were like a fluffy cloud.
They are very accomodating to dietary needs- nothing was a issue and there are heaps of options. Flavours were great too. It was our first nepalese meal and loved it. The sweet potato curry was amazing too, the spices was on point. :)))) we had a great time
Gastrology
Then it was time to enjoy a feast which consisted of a Nepalese inspired banquet offering up a myriad of momo varieties and various refreshments - which took us on a journey to the mouth watering street food in Nepal (but with a modern twist!)

Food was lovingly prepared by renowned chef Hem Ghale, who has more than 18 years’ experience having worked across the globe as head momo chef at restaurants including Margos Restaurant at Melbourne’s Crown & the Sheraton Hotel.

Momos are the Nepalese version of dumplings that burst with flavour. Momo Fest 2018 boasts over 30+ varieties of momos - ranging from buff momos (a popular favourite in Nepal), goat, lamb, beef, chicken, pork, seafood, and various vegetarian and vegan options.
Good Food Good Mood
Last night I attended the launch dinner for the Momo festival which will be held at the Velodrome food truck festival after the successful inaugural event last year. Having had momos several times at the night market I was pretty excited as Nepal Dining Room recently won the AGFG 2018 Readers choice for Nepalese restaurants.
The venue itself had an amazing atmosphere and decor and we were treated to an array of Nepalese dumplings and street food dishes.
All of the momos had different shapes and textures, my personal favourite was the chicken which had kind of a gyouza style wrapping and was pan fried. There was also pork, spicy chicken, lamb and veggie. The momos were accompanied by four types of chutney my favourite of which was the super flavoursome tomato with wild pepper.
On the tapas platter I loved the chicken skewers which were super tender with a nice smoky char and the yummy aloo chop which was a potato based dish. A sweet potato curry and a bean dish called kwati were also very tasty.
We finished the meal on a sweet note with evaporated milk dumplings served with ice cream. These had a great light texture and really embodied the Nepalese soul food concept that momos are all about.
If you do get a chance to head to the festival 23-25th of March it will not only be a taste sensation but they also use the proceeds to support great causes and last year contributed extensively to the Nepal earthquake relief. Good dumplings and good deeds!

Had my boyfriend birthday dinner at Nepal dining room. The environment is very welcoming and well set up. Both my Nepalese boyfriend and myself enjoyed the food a lot, everything was good size and so delicious. Staff were very attentive and friendly, special thanks to them helping me to organise a dessert for my boyfriends birthday. Very enjoyable dinner, we will be back again :)

Love how the menu is clearly labeled with dietary requirements. I got the mixed vegetable curry. It was great, however a very small portion for the price.

I would imagine it'd be pretty rare for anyone to wake up craving Nepalese food. It's not a cuisine which is at the back of our minds. However when either one of us suggest it, it's always met with the feeling of shock and excitement. We are rewarded every time we eat Nepalese food, and this time at Nepal Dining Room, it was no exception. As a matter of fact, this may be the best Nepalese we've ever had!

Sometimes Helen and I enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. Situated in Malvern East, parking was always going to be plentiful outside Nepal Dining Room. Equipped with a bottle of Peter Lehman Shiraz (BYO), it was the start of a chilled and relaxing night. The decor here was clean, modern and contemporary. All the paintings and wall hangings embedded themselves beautifully on the concrete walls. The use of wooden furniture and Edison lights added a warm feel to the restaurant. The sound absorption panels on the roof stopped any echoing from entering our conversation. Overall it's a well designed layout which would make anyone feel really comfortable.

The whole experience wouldn't be complete without some tasty food, and they were certainly on point with all their dishes. We started with the tapas platter as we wanted to try a bit of everything. This was the perfect starter as it was appetizing but not too filling. I enjoyed everything on this platter! My favourite dish was the Pork Belly Choila. It was a grilled pork belly marinated with garlic, ginger, onion, coriander and a touch of lime. I'm quite convinced that no bad dish can be made with these lovely ingredients. I loved how the charred flavour comes through, then the marinade tones it down.

We followed this up with an eggplant and pumpkin curry, goat curry, garlic bokchoy, pulaw rice and aloo roti. Both curries tasted amazing! No matter if you're a vegetarian or meat eater, these guys have got you covered. I'm personally the latter and am finding a new appreciation for vegetarian dishes. Considering the fact that eggplant and pumpkin were not my favourite veggies growing up, they have won me over with this curry! The flavours were bold and flavoursome, loved it. We also enjoyed the aloo roti, as it had a layer of fluffy potato inside. It also had great texture as the outside was not soggy at all. In hindsight, we probably ordered too much carbs and could have done without the rice as we were stuffed! Oh I almost forgot to mention, for you chilli lovers out there, don't forget to get a serve of the chilli chutney. It was so good that we ordered some takeaway for our parents.

I could not fault anything about Nepal Dining Room, everything was perfect! The only regret we have was not finding it sooner. We've already made another booking to take Helen's parents here to eat and I cannot wait! Check this place out guys, because we could all do with some more Nepalese food in our lives.

- D

Great ambience in a different area to the usual chapel street or st Kilda. The food was so delicious. We had entrees if momos and some other dish that was fresh and tasty. We shared a selection of mains including prawns, chicken curry, goat curry, cauliflower, potatoes. All dishes were very tasty. This was for 4 people. I thought we had over ordered but we ate it all. Loved that it was BYO wine and we topped it off with desserts of brownies and a traditional style milk dumpling. One of our party commented at the end of the night it was the best Asian he has ever eaten. We will be back.

We went there as a table for 4 on a Saturday night in early August. A big space and, with a good crowd as there was that night, the place had a bright cheerful atmosphere. Loved the food and it makes a good change from Indian/SE Asian food. Medium dishes were a good balance and would suit all but the chilli lovers. Service friendly and quite fast. We will certainly go back.

Fantastic restaurant! It's big, but still cozy! Great vibe. The service was fast and friendly too. Lots of variety on the menu, even for gluten free, vegos and vegans! Servings were deceptively big and everything was just delicious! I recommend the pumpkin and eggplant curry! I wish I had had room for the dumpling dessert. Next time.

We were lucky enough to try these guys at the recent Mordialloc food and wine festival and were so impressed we hit up their restaurant a few weeks later. And what an experience. A relaxed and cosy atmosphere, extremely friendly staff and amazing food. Such vibrant flavours and all reasonably priced. A true hidden gem, not to be missed. Be sure to order the Nepalese dumpling desert, YUMMM! 😋
We'll definitely be back soon!!

Great food, really fresh and tasty. We had the fish curry, lamb curry and the cauliflower, flavours were really well balanced. Good service and attentive staff
Wandering Spoon
Didn't know what to expect since I've never tried traditional Nepalese food before. Food was tasty and strong flavor with a touch of refreshing ingredients from salad and herbs. The goat curry and fish were the standout. Nice decor and friendly services. The bonus is we had 25% off with Entertainment book. Would come back when we have a chance.

I had expected a traditional Indian restaurant but that is definitely not what this is (besides the fact that Nepal isn't in India). This is a modern restaurant with interesting dishes. I had the chicken chow chow and this was delicious.
Nicholas Law
We waited for nearly an hour for our food and when we asked about whether our order was put through, the waiters looked annoyed. It's only after another 15 minutes that some of my friends left the table due to other time commitments that the waiter told us that our order was yet to put through. All in all, food was not worth the wait.

Fantastic place. Owners are lovely. Food is nice. Highly recommend. Great to see owners taking pride in their nationality and keeping authentic. Hard to fault.

Relatively new on Waverley road, big fan of their chicken-pumpkin curry- so yummy, and not overly expensive. Would love to see more people discover this gem!

We've eaten here a couple of times now and my partner and i have been impressed both times. The service is very friendly and attentive. The restaurant has been nicely decorated making for a pleasant ambience. The food is fresh and full of flavour and I'm keen to try more of the dishes. The entrée tasting plate is worth a try. Hope to come back again soon.

After enjoying Kathmandu Kitchen for many years we tried the new incantation Nepal. Beautiful clean restaurant, friendly helpful staff and the food, oh the food ... so good! Generous sizes and reasonably quick to the table, we thoroughly enjoyed an eggplant and pumpkin curry and a tandoori chicken style dish. It didn't take long for the restaurant to fill up to capacity which didn't surprise us. We'll be back and very soon. Thanks for a lovely dinner.
Satiawanan Maniam
The food was like a combination of Chinese and Indian flavours- tasted good. The goat curry though lacked a punch and perhaps needed more spices. Staff were attentive although the male manager could have been more welcoming- very curt and no smiles. There is a kids area at the back with toys so makes it easy for parents to enjoy dinner when kids are playing. The ambience was also lovely. Will definitely go back again.
#alwayshungry
I'm quite familiar with Nepalese food so was very excited to try out this new restaurant. We went in for lunch which was a mistake. The lunch menu, whilst having delicious food, did not taste Nepalese at all. The flavours of the food were good and complimented each other well but I didn't taste any authentic Nepalese flavours. I would still go back for lunch though because it was delicious. Will need to try dinner!

We returned here and they have certainly read the reviews. Food was absolutely delicious with strong Nepalese flavours. Service was also excellent. Definitely recommend! Can't wait to take the whole family.
Justine Heath
Great food and atmosphere. Can't work out why it it wasn't full. Similar to Indian but fresher than your typical Indian restaurant. We had a selection of starters -all delicious - then the prawn and fish curries for mains. Highly recommended.
Mark Geerlings
Great food, sort of a combination between. Chinese and Indian food. Very attentive waiters and fantastic ambience with a modern decor. The goat curry is the speciality and amazing, momo's are a real treat (like a dumpling) and the Lol Mahon (like a small pudding) was so good I had 2 :-) not that expensive either.
Terrific meal last night at Napal Dining Room. Hem is a very friendly host. The small plate menu is a delight especially the pork belly. Our fish and prawn curry was delicately flavored with fresh and tasty ingredients. The restaurant is tastefully designed and the service efficient non fuss and prompt. Highly recommended by our family.
Nikstah
Fantastic food and service. Very attentive. The chilly chicken was so succulent and melted in your mouth delicious. My friend ate the pork belly and wholemeal roti, and loved it. Thank you Nepal Dining Room for such a great experience.

First time having Nepalese food!

I was pleasantly surprised with the complex yet homely tastes of the dishes we had (goat curry, chicken chow chow) - especially the goat curry. The meat came apart from the touch of a fork.

The decor of the place was comfortable and even a little bit cozy, which was surprising, given their mid-upper range prices.

I'll be sure to return with friends in the future.
Ciarán Reid
Not being familiar with Nepalese food I wasn't quite Sure what to expect from this place. Upon leaving I wondered why there aren't more Nepalese restaurants as the food was outright delicious!
To top it off the service was very attentive and the modern minimalist interior was executed tastefully. Will be sure to return next time I'm in Caulfield.

On 4th July we had a wonderful evening at the Nepal Dining Room. Hem made us feel special on Les' birthday, and the food was outstanding. Thank you to all the staff who work tirelessly int he kitchen. Wishing you all the success in the world with this new venture, Hem. Your friends and customers Annette & Les

Best Nepalese restaurant in town. Most Nepalese restaurants copy Indian cuisine and use far too much spice, not how Nepalese food is supposed to be.

Gotta try the Momo, best in town. Lal Mohan (although not traditionally Nepalese) is out of this world; it is hands down better than any Indian restaurants I've been to. My other favorites are pork choila, aloo dam, chilli chicken, pork belly curry, chicken chow chow, lamb shank, wholemeal roti and aloo roti.

Dined here a few times now; always fresh, healthy ingredients, and excellent customer service all the time.
Justinehill73
Delicious. Love this restaurant. Great flavours. Nice modern fit out. Excellent service.

Best momo's anywhere. Dined here on opening night & it's been worth the wait. This is the brand new restaurant of the previous owners of Kathmandu Kitchen in Malvern. Best momo's in town. On this visit we enjoyed the momo's, the very delicious & melt in your mouth slow cooked goat curry & the softest & tastiest lal mohan's for dessert. A must visit for anyone! I can't wait to go back again soon.
