Review Tandoori Cottage - Malvern

Mario Cocurullo
Discover this place thanks to a word to mouth. Loved it. We ordered cheesy naan, lamb korma and butter chicken. The lamb was amazingly tender, butter chicken was spot on. The restaurant is nothing special inside, but you don't go to restaurant for the chairs right?? šŸ˜…

It used to be our go-to place for some authentic Indian food but has been disappointing the last couple of times. The butter chicken was just off (which used to be excellent) and the fish madras tasted like a watered down version of the original. Don't think will be returning anytime soon.

Fantastic little family bussiness. Some of best indian ever had Had good range of food, clean tidy place.

Only issue..when picking up phone order it is NEVER ready on time..always have to wait another 10 to 15 minutes. Annoying. Food is excellent.

Tried their takeaway tonight. It was so yummy! Got the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Their sauce is so rich and creamy. It's a flavour explosion! Get their Naan bread bread too

Really delicious food, well priced and very fast. We had the butter chicken, lamb madras, kutchumber salad and pistachio kulfi, extremely tasty :)

Great place to have good Indian curries in reasonable price. Friendly staff, waited quite a long to get my t/w order but it was worth to wait. Strongly recommended.

The food was delicious as always. Tandoori chicken was succulent. The various curries were tasty and meats so tender. Need to return more frequently.

Best butter chicken in town! And the tandoori mushrooms were so flavoursome and juicy!

Not feeling in the mood to cook, and craving some amazing curry I decided to order from Tandoori Cottage. Our meal was ready in a timely manner and the staff were friendly when I picked it up.

Our meals were spiced beautifully and the portions were generous. The garlic naan is so addictive, with a really nice texture. The rice was cooked well and the butter chicken was delicious and creamy with tender pieces of chicken. Overall, it was a good option for takeaway, and we enjoyed our meal.

Butter chicken is amazing, the cheese naan is sensational. Itā€™s a must order. The chicken rice is great but a touch too expensive. I really donā€™t enjoy the lamb and beef dish, itā€™s cooked perfectly, tender and falling apart but the flavour is average. The service is average, seems to be more focus on takeaway business these days
Always consistently fabulous

I know what you're thinking, it's a Saturday afternoon and you just need to eat some good ol fashioned delicious food. Tandoori Cottage really did not disappoint. To the point where it's a Monday afternoon, and I'm STILL thinking of the Butter Chicken.

Chicken Tika is amazing! The flavour is delicious, the sauce is tangy, spicy and adds so much to the meal. Accompanied with the nan bread, it makes for a great lunch! Friendly staff, cheap prices and quality food. Highly recommended.

Iā€™ve been to many Indian restaurants and this place serves up some of the best food Iā€™ve tasted. We ordered the butter chicken, beef vindaloo and garlic naan and now we can say weā€™ve found our go to Indian restaurant.

Best tandoori chicken I've tasted in all of Melbourne!! Great service and the joint was absolutely spotless!! I have been coming here for many here and its ways amazing.

Our favourite Indian in east Malvern. Weā€™ve only had take away from here however everything weā€™ve had is fantastic. My favourite is the chicken butter cream and my wife loves the Dahl
Meg
Always so delicious and lovely staff, my partner who's Sri Lankan also loves the place despite being picky which his curries. Definitely our go to spot.

The food was Excellent, never fails to disappoint, Iā€™ve been going there for years and the butter chicken is my go to dish. The best butter in town.

Our favourite local. Every time my husband and I dine here we leave completely satisfied. Great food full of flavour and lovely staff. The tandoori chicken and lamb saag is a delight. BYO is the cherry on the Gulab Jamun šŸ‘³šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

For the few years I've been coming to Tandoori Cottage I have not been disappointed once. Food is always ripe with flavour, served on time and with good service. Probably the only Indian restaurant in the area that truly captures the essence of my homeland food. Definitely deserves 5 stars for consistency and delivery of perfect service.

The food is of high quality and has been for many years. Consistency between dine in and take away options make it a very solid option for whatever mood you are in. There is a great variety of dishes so can cater for people of differing tastes or requirements.
Jellie
Wonderful service and food from a friendly family-run restaurant. Have ordered many times over the years and never had any issues. Both meat and vegetarian dishes are lovely - especially the tandoori mushrooms and chicken - and servings are always generous. My favourite Indian restaurant in the area.

Tandoori Cottage was an ok experience... The food was good but nothing to be crazy about, was lacking distinct flavours in the vindaloo, Madras curries and the entrees were bland, we ordered the samosas and chicken. The worst thing about this place was the service.. waited for 50 minutes for the mains to come out, it wasn't too much of a busy night either. The waiter would start taking our orders and then go to another customer, upon receiving our food he didn't know which dish was which.. and said they all look the same. The place is not bad to sit in with a bunch of friends but just a shame about the service. Good thing is they split bills here. Wouldn't come back here again though..

This restaurant has never failed to deliver an evening full of great tasting dishes, in the 10 years that we have been eating at this restaurant we have never had a disappointing dish, on odd occasions a dish may not have been as good as it was remembered from the last time it was ordered, but these occasions occur very rarely. There is a distinct difference in flavour between each of the curries which makes it a pleasure for everyone at the table to order something different and to share the various dishes amongst everyone at the table. This warm, small family friendly eatery is possibly one of the best overall Indian dining experiences in Melbourne, price wise it is exceptionally good value (1990's prices) where the quality of the meal and the service is unbelievable good.

I ordered take away food for $50 for two people and I have got curries carried over from last night. Super shittttttt food. It looks like $50 may not be a big revenue for owner, but he must needs to realize that it takes lots of effort for customer to earn that $50. I lost my hard earned $50. I wouldn't recommend to anyone and in fact insist not to take a risk.

The best Murgh Makhani in town!!! Come for the food, the service is a bonus!!!

Consistently fantastic!! Make sure you specify your heat!!!!!!!!

Love this restaurant. My boyfriend and I go often to eat and recommend as The Place To Go to dine in the area.

Butter Chicken is a favourite and the staff is very accommodating as I always ask to swap the chicken out for potatoes and they comply very politely. The perfectly cooked and seasoned Garlic Naan is to die for. If I could insert the heart eye emoji here I would.

Great customer service, Ā timing and quality of food is 5 stars, both takeaway and dine-in.Ā

Seems to be a family-owned restaurant. The staff are very polite and friendly.

They allow BYO alcohol and offered to keep the rest of our 6 pack of cider in the fridge to stay cool.

One of my favourite restaurants - if not my #1. Would definitely go back.

This place is daggy and cold. But the food is beyond yummy! I was vegetarian for 3years before trying their butter chicken. The garlic AND cheese nann is the best thing ever. I can't recommend this place more.
F-cat
Absolutely love this place! The food is fantastic. Very rich with sauces and the meat is cooked perfectly. The service is amazing. The staff are so friendly and very attentive!
Princrus
Really great place food is delicious and authentic. Friendly faces too however would advise not being in too much of a hurry to eat and run food can take a while from the kitchen
Nick Voulanas
love the food here, so fresh and aromatic. After living in London for 4 years and having curry weekly, this is on the same level. A real chance of over eating is always a problem as the food is so good.
Cat
Reliably good food but kitchen can be a bit slow. The food is cheap and very tasty. Just about everything on the extensive menu is great. Good value for money !
Ross Healy
The best butter chicken i've tasted anywhere in the world, better than what I had in India too.

Friendly staff and the owners are attentive to the regulars.

Little hidden spot this one. Food is incredible. Garlic cheese naan is heaven in your mouth. Portions are very generous and well priced. Looks dingy when you walk in but believe me the food is worth it. I really should have stopped half way through my meal and had the rest for leftovers but couldn't stop eating it was so delicious, was bursting by the end.
Gone there a few times now and the kitchen can be a little slow. Also have to constabtly ask for water. I always ask for tap water now because the chiller water tastes very strongly of plastic, simply couldn't drink it. Bit of a worry

Best Indian food. Really nice staff. Can't recommend more. Butter chicken is amazing. Garlic cheese nann is a must have! Can't wait to eat here again.

Ok food terrible service, 1 1/2 hours for entrƩe and then main took another 15 mins. Asked for Massala Chai and water, water comes out half way through main and Chai comes out cold and with no milk, we specifically asked if it is traditional with milk boiled and we are told yes. The food was ok butter chicken was too tomatoey, beef Rohan josh a little tough, Dahl was very good and creamy, nahn was very soft and fluffy perhaps under cooked and rice was very dry/hard. Desert (sorry we have run out) OMG perhaps the worst service in my history of eating out. Why did I not walk out and go to Bala Da Dahba???
Dane Stokes
Good food, terrible service. We've been coming here for years, and though service is poor the food has usually made up for it. Shame that tonight, after already waiting an hour for our delivery that was promised in 15 minutes, were told that it wouldn't be coming as they're too busy. We had to inbound too, not even a courtesy call. We won't be back.

The surroundings, both outside and in, arenā€™t particularly salubrious. The service struggles a bit. But the food is really, really excellent. Carol and I were there with two friends who consider Tandoori Cottage one of their ā€œlocalsā€. We were happy to drive there, based on their recommendation, and werenā€™t disappointed.

Have been going here for 6+ years. Simply put they have the BEST butter chicken that I have eaten anywhere, they have some of the tastiest breads, samosas and tandoori chicken.

Amazing atmosphere, staff and a very convenient location for the malvern area.

Best butter chicken in Melbourne!. Went to dine in with my wife on Friday night, we ordered their butter chicken and some cheese naan it was absolutely amazing!!! Amazing food at a bargain! We had 1 butter chicken 2 cheese naan and some Rice all under $30!!!! Would recommend to all!

Long Time Happy Customer But Never Again....... What!s Going On? Have loved the food here for a long time - but it's now too long to wait and too often the wrong order. Over the past 6 weeks our regular order has been delivered with the wrong items, up to 40 minutes after the quoted delivery time or items from our order missing. Tonight when we decided to refuse to accept our delivery 30 minutes after the quoted time (90 minutes after we ordered!) we decided enough was enough. The food is good but I won't accept it comes at the cost of basic simple service.

WHY WHY WHY!!???. Why when it is so busy do they not be honest with the time?? We ordered at 6.50pm and they said 20 minutes but we know what they are like so we waited 40 minutes. Still not ready, thats ok waited another 15 minutes. No apology, no sorry guys so you ask the question, kids in car how much longer? How do you then become the bad person "...if you dont wont to wait then dont wait...". Ok we live around the corner can you deliver it? Sure it will be there in 15, 45 later not there! WHY WHY just be honest we are reasonable people if you are busy we are happy to work with your timetable!
Been going here for 10 years but not anymore and from what i here neither are plenty of other people!

Typical indian restaurant very disorganised and chaotic in the kitchen. Had to wait for over an hour to get my takeaway food and in the end it was the worst Indian meal I had in ages.

Amazing food and service for a great price. Went here on friday night, We ordered the special banquet, we got vegetables samosa's and pakora's for our entrƩes which were beautiful.
The main dishes that came for our banquet were butter chicken, lamb roganjosh and vegetable curry with safron and plain rice and garlic naan and plain naan. We were amazed to find out that we had the option to order as much as we needed of there main for no extra price as the banquets main are unlimited for a set price! We even got dessert which was also included in the banquets and their gulabjuam and pista kulfi was simply amazing.
The food cam out fairly quickly even though they were so busy. we could not believe how cheap it was for the amount of food we received. The service was great, they staff is very friendly.

will be recommending it to everyone!

Had a great time. We had dinner at this amazing place yesterday. We ordered tandoori patter and samosa in the entrees and butter chicken, Lamb Roganjosh and cheese naan in the mains. Everything was just so yummy. Especially the butter chicken was fantastic. Service was quick and excellent. We had our sizzling platter and samosas with the raita yogurt perfectly on time. Its a perfect place to spend your evening.

Just went there for dinner. Had rave reviews about the food from friends. Waited over 15 mins and hadn't even been spoken to or given a menu. Decided to google another local Indian restaurant - Jaipur Royal Indian Restaurant and head for there instead. Was excellent. Tandoori Cottage didn't even realise we'd left coz they probably forgot they seated us. Bo matter how good the food, no excuse for crap service
Vanessa Carslake
Always delicious ! The chicken tikka is divine!!!

Dependable Curry Fix. I've tried most of the curries from the menu and all are good quality. We're not talking about the greatest Indian restaurant in Melbourne, but if you're in the area and fancy a curry, you can't go too wrong.

A big WOW!!. Ive just discovered this restaurant and all i can say is "wow" !!!
Its got the best Butter Chicken ive ever had and i went with 2 friends last week and we had vegetable samosas,3 x garlic naan,2 x saffron rice and 3 delicious dishes (a chicken,a beef and a lamb) and all up,it was only $72 for the THREE of us.................i was stunned.
The food was amazing, delicious and i cant wait to go back there : )

Disguised Gem. It may not be considered 'trendy', but the food is consistently good. Eating in I always order the banquet and never leave disapointed. The one item I always think about and order extra of is their phenomenal butter chicken with naan bread. It is, in my opinion outstanding.

Simply amazing!. I mostly do take away from this place and the food was so amazing and the staff were so kind that i simply had to try and dine in.
When i arrived with my friends i was greeted by a young lady who showed us to our seats. Without even asking we were provided with water and complimentary papadams which was very nice.
We ordered tandoori mushroom, cheese naan and barra kababs for entree as it was recommended to us by the waitress and for mains we had buttter chicken, lamb vindaloo and daal makhani with garlic naan and for dessert we had pista kulfi and it was all delicious.
I was amazed that there wasn't one dish i could criticize, their proportions a very generousness and they offered to pack the remaining food for us! There is no restaurant that can compare to their food quality, i highly recommend this place, its a hidden gem. They get very busing on weekends so booking a table before hand would be wise. A big thumbs up!

Can sum up in a word "Vanilla".

Great Indian. Local favourite. Hard to find better Indian food anywhere in Melbourne, and certainly not at this price! Plenty on the menu and I'm yet to have had something I didn't like. Service can be a little slow on Friday and Saturday nights, but the food is well worth the wait and the staff are very welcoming. My favourites would be the saag with cheese and the beef vindaloo.
Dan Gunawardana
Horrible experience today. normally come here for dinner most Saturdays today will be my last. I normally have the banquet today we were waiting nearly 15 minutes between our servings of naan bread. it was crazy!!! we kept asking this one waitress for our bread but all the other while everyone was getting their servings. And also a message to the waitress please don't talk in your own language about their customers other people can understand! management please don't get waiters who have just started primary school to serve on a busy Saturday night
Flosblos
One of the best!. With the most consistent Butter Chicken ever it doesn't matter whether you go for take away, home delivery or in house dining Tandoori Cottage never fails to please. One of our all time favourites. Obviously we love the Butter Chicken, but the Malai Kofta and the Palak Paneer (or Saag Paneer if you prefer) are also big time favourites, as is the Cheese Garlic Naan YUMMY
Brett Schryver
My favourite Indian in all of Melbourne. My fav doshes are the Tandoori platter as a entree, butter chicken & lamb rogan josh & The garlic naan. Cheap cheerful & delicious! It does get busy so go a weeknight. It does do take away but I recommend to pick up as it does get busy. The family who run this are friendly and always accommodating.
Fleur
A good honest local restaurant that serves tasty food. Perfect for a Friday night feast with family or friends. Pretty standard menu options, but done well. The samosas were lovely and light inside. Dhaal great. All up $40 for two of us. Happy days.
Anastasia Starz
No rice.... After being seated we were offered complimentary papadums with three dips: sour cream, sweet chilli and soy - I think. Judging from pictures, I only tried the sour cream. I had Butter Chicken and Mango Lassi. The butter chicken was good, not too hot or tomato-y (canned tomato), but nothing amazing, like the reviewers suggested. I prefer Red Pepper. Service was good, lighting was too dim for photos. Mango Lassi was lovely as always, they used canned mangos from India by the way. There's only one thing wrong with Tandoori Cottage, their dishes don't come with rice. The butter chicken is 14.90 and rice is 3.00, so in terms of price it costs a bit more than the average. At Red Repper for 12.90 it comes butter chicken comes with your choice of rice or naan.

This place is great! Local, friendly, good value and most importantly really good food. Has just replaced Nawab's as Indian resto of choice in this hood! Well done to the owners!

Best Indian Food In Melbourne!. Tandoori cottage really does have the best Butter Chicken in melbourne! From melbourne's northern suburbs to right through to the Mornington Peninsula. Tandoori cottage absolutely sets the benchmark for truly consistant great food accross various menu items. I find myself comparing every Indian meal I eat elsewhere to their quality standard. My favorites: Vegetable Samosa, Butter chicken, Beef vindaloo, Daal makhani, Garlic naan, Peas pulou.. I used to live within walking distance, Then I moved across town, but regularly returned for dinner(s). It was worth the traffic and time!
Thankfully I have been living in walking distance for the past two years :-)

Five stars!
Charlotteharris
Fantastic, Consistent, honest food.... The food at tandoori cottage is fantastic...the staff are enthusiastic and efficient and in general it's the kind of place you can take anyone to, knowing it will be as good as the other times you went!

Real faves include the saag paneer and the paratha, so good!
Melissa Tang
Great little place!. Tandoori cottage used to be the friday night dinner place with my son when my husband used to play soccer. Great butter chicken and garlic naan. cheese naan is great too!
Nigel Hedges
I really enjoy the food at Tandoori Cottage. Sure, the butter chicken is made for westerner taste buds, but even that you can order medium spicy for a little zing. They make a good variety of other dishes too. If you're adventurous move away from the boring domain of lamb korma or butter chicken and try the jhalfrezi or the lamb neelgiri for example. Of course, the restaurant itself is neat but quite small, so eating in is an intimate suburban affair.
Loveshack
Absolutely fantastic Indian restaurant, when we moved to the area we were worried that we wouldn't find a restaurant that was as good as our old local Indian. But tandoori cottage exceeded our expectations, great tasting food, excellent value and friendly service.
Michael Bates
A Fantastic feed. And terrific staff. This is a traditional Indian restaurant that is well priced and I would recommend it to all.
Tamara
Great. We have tried many other indian restaurants in the area but always come back to Tandoori Cottage. They deliver, their servings sizes are great (always some left for lunch.) It tastes the best. My favorites are the butter chicken and the spinnach chicken. You can't go past Tandoori Cottage.
