Review Saint James - Malvern

Jessica Richardson
We had a delightful brunch at Saint Jaxie, and enjoyed the outdoor area. It is dog friendly, water bowls available, and shaded. Food was delicious, and the staff were friendly, cool, and we couldn't believe we were in Malvern!! Will definitely return soon!

I’ve been here before and I’m not sure if there is a new owner or not but last time I went before the massive lockdown, I was very impressed with everything we ordered. Very memorable impression and stunning presentation of the food and coffee! Such a talented barrista! Looking forward to visit this place again. I even upped my rating from 4 to 5 star.

Easy ordering, welcoming Staff, great plating, juices. Chicken in my Keto bowl was a bit dry but All the dishes we ordered are perfect. Will def visit again.

Overall a nice cozy cafe. Was here on weekday, so not much of people traffic and food variety. Good coffee and friendly staff. Had a veggie toastie, fillings onky had zucchini, eggplant and some spinach, could be more exciting and tasty if added some cheese and roasted tomatoes.

The Wagyu burger was juicy and delicious with the fries adding as the perfect crunchy side! Add the flat white I had and it was the perfect lunch 😊

Lovely back courtyard with some good shaded areas on a hot day. Food was excellent! We had the breakfast burger with chicken nuggets and fries and the soba noodle salad with chicken. Followed up by two super fresh and delicious cakes. Lovely staff and a great quiet spot with good food and coffee.

Came here as I heard the coffee was good. Ordered the French toast, absolutely horrible. It was overly eggy, soggy and tasteless, no flavour at all. I had one bite and refused to eat anymore. Definitely won’t be back.

Delicious breakfast, had the smashed avocado. Great coffee and cosy atmosphere.

We visited Saint James Café on a Saturday afternoon with friends and our dog, Zeus. We were greeted by friendly staff who pointed us in the direction of their outdoor courtyard which was quiet and spacious, perfect on a sunny day. We ordered the Smashed Avocado, Chilli Scrambled Eggs and Nourish Bowl (most with added halloumi). All these meals were thoroughly enjoyable and accompanied by Industry Beans coffees - all of which I would definitely recommend. The food/coffee, service and venue resulted in this 5-star rating. Thank you Saint James Café.

Good breakfast place with decent coffee. The nourish bowl was great and fresh. The waffle cut chips were a bit on the oily side but tasted nice. I did not expect to see Pumpkin Gnocchi on the menu as breakfast but gave it a try. The braised beef cheek just melted in your mouth and the gnocchi was tasty!
Karin
Fairly unimpressive menu. Unfortunately the chicken tasted like it came from the freezer section in the supermarket, the waffle was fairly okay.

A great visit to Saint James café in Malvern<br/> <br/>The interior is lovely, with navy blue being the dominant colour throughout the café. The outdoor courtyard was small and intimate. I loved the feature wall full of plants/succulents<br/> <br/>DRINKS<br/>Iced Latte with Almond Milk: A refreshing, tasty coffee dish<br/> <br/>FOOD<br/>Smashed Avo: A simple dish done exceptionally well. The egg was poached perfectly. There was a generous amount of avocado & feta ontop. The addition of red pepper hummus added a nice slightly sweet flavour to the overall dish<br/>Nourish Bowl: My friend really enjoyed this dish<br/> <br/>The service was awesome. The staff were friendly & attentive to our table outside

Had an absolutely beautiful lunch here enjoying the sunshine in their gorgeous courtyard.<br/><br/>The coffee was nice and hot and of course...some nice coffee art! Always love coffee art! <br/><br/>I ordered the nourish bowl and it was absolutely amazing; so good I finished off every last bite. Love the pesto hummus on it! <br/><br/>Atmosphere was nice and relaxing with staff who are laid back, kind and helpful. <br/><br/>Definitely check this place out!

I really am hoping that Saint James will bring their hotcakes back onto their main menu , pretty please 🙏🏻🥺<br/><br/>FOOD: I ordered the Grand Final Weekend Hotcakes special and it was absolutely amazing! I remember when I first came to Melbourne and I saw Saint James’s hotcakes EVERYWHERE and by the time I wanted to try it, they changed the menu :-( and I thought I’d never be able to try it BUT the brunch gods are on my side 🤣 after months of stalking their instagram 👀, lo and behold, they brought it back but only for the Grand Final Weekend and honestly, it was worth the wait. For all my life, I’ve always been attracted to charcoal infused foods and my favourite kind of bread is charcoal bread 🤣 so when I saw Saint James incorporating it into not just their hotcakes but their MASCARPONE??? I lost my marbles when I saw this on instagram and it definitely did NOT disappoint! Their hotcakes itself is the absolute perfect flavour and texture (I can tell why they’re so famous for it at last 🤤), the charcoal mascarpone was really delicious and though it still tasted like mascarpone, there was just a little something special about it! The lemon curd along with fresh mangoes and mango coulis added a fruity touch that was super delightful and who doesn’t love a cheeky little chocolate soil 👀 I loved how it wasn’t too sweet and with the fruity touch, it made it not too heavy and sickening! <br/><br/>SERVICE: Pleasant service and really friendly staff! They’re super attentive and thank you for working on the Grand Final holidays 🥺<br/><br/>Overall, the hotcakes are an absolute beaut to look at but also an amazing experience to taste! Saint James nailed their hotcakes and I really hope they bring back some form of their delicious hotcakes for the spring menu! ❤️
Eating With Ebony
Went here recently with a friend. I got the saint benedict & she got a fish finger butty with chips. The beef brisket on the saint benedict was so succulent & juicy & there was a lot of it! Definitely left leaving full. My friend thought her fish finger butty had an interesting combination of flavours but they all mixed well together & wants to try and make her own version at home. <br/>I have to say the service was 10/10. This lady kept always made sure we were alright & making sure we got everything we needed. Which I thought was lovely.

Always amazing here!<br/><br/>We ordered;<br/>SMOKED TROUT SALAD!! Pretty as a picture AND tastes even BETTER than it looks 😍 Fresh and so good for you, with every element perfectly intertwined!<br/><br/>APPLE CRUMBLE BIRCHER<br/>A SUPER HEALTHY BOWL 🍚 With Oats + Quinoa + Yoghurt + Honey 🍯+ Apple 🍏 + Berry & Cacao Crumble <br/>A textural bircher & and full bodied with the creamy texture from the Yoghurt. Natural sweetness from the honey and apple which give it beautiful hints of flavour with each mouthful 😋👌🏻A delight to eat with so much going for it!!<br/><br/>SAINT BENEDICT<br/>Berkshire Pork Shoulder + Fresh Apple 🍎 + Poached Eggs + Beurre Noisette Hollandaise on Toasted Sourdough 🍞🥚🍳🐷<br/>The dish as a whole was very tasty, packed with flavour. The eggs were poached beautifully and the apple went really well with it too. The highlight was the hollondaise which had a bit of sweetness with in it and made the dish come together beautifully!! <br/><br/>Ahh-mazing!! Thanks to @saintjamescafe for giving the girls 11/10 service!!!

Went here for the first time on Saturday after seeing photos of their food all over Instagram. I’m a huge bacon fan and it was the bacon portion size in the photos that got me there. Easily one of the best breakys I’ve had in a long time - I had the smashed avo with a side of bacon. The bacon was huge and the smashed avo was packing flavour with orange hummus & a green herby sauce. Coffee was so good I had three. Keep up the good work guys, we will be back again soon!!!

A bit disappointed.&nbsp; Had read the reviews on Zomato and also looked at all the pictures and the menu.&nbsp; Booked for a birthday for 10 people for lunch.&nbsp; Menu was a lot smaller than the one advertised on Zomato.&nbsp; The food didn&#039;t reflect the photographs on here.&nbsp; &nbsp;Avocado smash was a bit of avocado spread on toast with some dollops of goats cheese and a poached egg.&nbsp; The rest of the meals were also underwhelming.&nbsp; Hmmmm won&#039;t be back as not value for money.

Real rating 4.2 ⭐️ <br/><br/>My friends and I had caught up at Saint James for brunch and here’s what we had!<br/><br/>Zucchini, corn and halloumi fritters - served with roasted capsicum and onion salsa, watercress, capsicum labne and poached eggs! The fritters were pretty tasty with the sweetness of the corn and the saltiness of the halloumi. The salsa was a good addition giving the fritter and extra kick!<br/><br/>Apple Bircher - served with coyo, seasonal fruits, mango coulis, berries, rose water poached pear and toasted coconut flakes! This was a lovely meal to eat as the bircher was on point and the seasonal fruits were very fresh!<br/><br/>Pan fried gnocchi - served with beans, asparagus, goats feta and pumpkin veloute! The gnocchi was so good - it was not over cooked and was not soft and melted in the mouth! The cheesiness from the feta also made it really tasty!<br/><br/>Blueberry and ricotta hotcakes - served with vanilla custard, blueberry compote, orange caramel, dried orange, ricotta crisp and berries! The hotcakes were thick but a little bit dry.<br/><br/>We had a fun time at Saint James and would be happy to visit again to try the rest of their menu!

The food was decent here and the service was great. We ordered a lot of food but the stand out dish for me was the gnocchi and hotcakes although the hotcakes could be fluffier. The pear Bircher was yummy as well. The fritters for me was ok but wasn’t my favourite as there were too many elements on there but that’s just me. I enjoyed this cafe overall and they make great coffee !

We chose this place, over others in the area, based on good ratings. Unfortunately, on our visit, this cafe didn't meet expectations. Wait staff were lovely, but terrible service. Coffee was warm, and almost cold... I found a hair in my meal and reported it to wait staff. I was subsequently charged for my meal, which was incredibly disappointing. Will not be back.
Dani
Venue was lovely. Waitstaff were also lovely. Unfortunately there was a hair (?beard) hair in the meal and although only eaten half of the dish, still had to pay for the dish.

🐷 Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict 🍳<br/>🍯 Honeycomb Pikelets 🥞<br/>.<br/>.<br/>I've been on the search for the best pulled pork Benedict and this beauty at Saint James Cafe jumped right to the top of the list! ⤴️ as the ancient philosopher Fat Joe states, "Nothing can stop me, I'm ALL THE WAY UP!" 😉👳🏾‍♂️ #facts<br/>.<br/>.<br/>☑ 9/10! Generous serve of tender, juicy pulled pork 🐷 yolky poached eggs 🥚 an excellently balanced and smooth hollandaise sauce 💦 garnished with crunchy apple slices! 🍏 which gave the dish the final sweet and sour punch and crunch! 💥 massive fan of this dish 😁 not forgetting how good those pikelets were 😍<br/>.<br/>.<br/>💡 TIP - Brilliant British influence on all their dishes 🇬🇧 Definitely try the Potato Rosti! 🥔 great flavour and overall great dish! 👌🏽

I discovered this place on Instagram and was drawn to it by their delicious looking pics. The food not only looks good, but it tastes great.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: not too far from the station, this cafe is very homey and the staff are incredibly nice. The cafe itself wasn’t too busy on a Sunday so it was perfect for a catch up as no one will kick you out. <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the mushrooms dish was delightful - I am a big fan of mushrooms and I can definitely say it was done well. We also tried the scrambled eggs which were amazing. I also ordered a freshly squeezed OJ - who doesn’t like freshly squeezed orange juice.<br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the dishes were delicious but all seem mediocre - I really wanted it to have more of a wow factor! <br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: loved the vibes of this cafe and will be back for that mushroom dish.
Eleanor
Honestly the food here tasted as good as it looks! Really lived up to its expectations and I was very happy with my lunch 😋<br/>The rosti was nice and crunchy on the outside yet soft and warm on the inside, definitely the favorite out of the 3 dishes.<br/>Only critic to give was that the breakfast bowl had some elements too salty and some elements too bland.<br/>But overall all 3 dishes were delicious and this is a great place to have hearty brunch

Saint James Malvern is on a quiet section of Malvern Road, and a small interior that is always quite popular with locals, from those stopping by a coffee before work, or those popping in after an early morning jog! They recently launched a new menu, with new features like the old charcoal activated hotcakes have been swapped out for a refreshing, blueberry and ricotta.

Popped down to this super cute café in Malvern. Our favourite was the Chilli Scrambled Eggs with ocean trout, sambal, crispy shallots and fresh coriander - came out so quick - awesome cause we were starving! Saint benedict was a great take on the classic, decided to order two serves of fresh pineapple + oj +passionfruit juice (because it was delicious) and a latte to power through the rest of the day! Saint James has a really beautiful courtyard out the back with blankets and heaters if it starts to get chilly. Definitely recommend this place!

Been here a few times. The food is generally good to very good but sometimes its not. The menu is varied with great choices. Last weekend i had scrambled eggs and bacon w mushrooms. Bacon was overdone almost burnt, sure i like it crispy but this was a step too far. Eggs were overdone and rubbery. Mushrooms tasty and cooked nicely. Toast wasnt nice, burnt on the crusts yet somehow not cooked at all in the middle. <br/>Previously I’ve had the nutritional vege type bowls w quinoa and they have been good. <br/>Tall guy (who perhaps owns it) is never very friendly. <br/>I will probably return and if its better next time w more friendly service I will increase the stars to a 4 but my breakfast this recent time was honestly worth a 2 out of 5. <br/>Id like to try the black pudding.

Saint James is one of the best brunch cafes I’ve been to. Very good menu with lots of different options for everyone! I ordered the apple bircher - it was pretty, delicious and filling. The staff are also willing to customise menu items to suit each customer - I was pleased they took the time to make the changes suggested by my friend to her breakfast burger. I appreciate it! The staff are super friendly and accommodating. Cafe can fit a table of 12 easily. Definitely an ideal place for a group get together!

Saint James has been a cafe that I've always wanted to visit. It's a very cosy cafe with a neat concept of locking patrons phones in a box until they leave. It was a shame that the portable charger inside only contained a cable for iPhone users.<br/><br/>I tried their Fish Finger Butty as it seems to be quite popular here. Unfortunately, I didn't understand what everyone was raving about. At first glance, the bun I had was different to the pictures everyone has uploaded. It was a white powdered bun and was quite small, barely fitting the fish and salad. The fish was lovely and very soft. The salad was average and I could barely taste their pea aioli. I'm not sure if this is the new standard, but it definitely wasn't worth the steep price. I'll be hesitant to visit this cafe again.<br/><br/>Food - 2.5<br/>Service - 4<br/>Price - overpriced, especially with the weekend surcharge

A beautiful cafe located in Malvern! Its was a nice day so we opted to sit outside and enjoy some sun! A nice fresh juice, good coffee and delicious food made the dining experience pretty much perfect. Thanks to the lovely staff for serving us

Just a few minutes from home , we decided to pop by for brunch and was blown away by the delicious food. With a British influence , we found the menu items really exciting and could not wait to try .<br/><br/>Another wonderful thing about this café is their new innovative initiative to have a phone free dining experience. There will be a box on each table to store your phone inside which I think is a great idea and takes brunch back to basics where it was all about the food and the dining experience <br/><br/>We started off with the smoked trout croquettes and the potato rosti . The smoked trout croquettes had a really nice texture and flavour, it was not mushy and you could taste and feel the texture of the fish. Paired with romesco sauce and pineapple it was a unique and delicious dish<br/><br/>The potato rosti was a ripper of a dish – if you do not like garlic then I warn you to steer away. The garlic in this dish is really intense but that’s exactly what I love. The cauliflower puree was silky smooth and we loved the salsa verde which provided freshness to the dish<br/><br/>Thanks for having us

Amazing coffee, attentive service. By far one of the best cafes in the area. I frequent it for coffees but have yet to try the British-inspired food, which sounds awesome. Also a small side note, but I appreciate that they always have reading material on offer.
Chronicles Of Nardia
Saint James Cafe is located on Malvern Road in Malvern. An English inspired cafe offering a great range of teas, coffees & brunch/lunch dishes. With some seating out on the street, it’s fairly small inside but we soon discovered a large open courtyard out the back. <br/><br/>We started with coffee & a quality iced latte which was perfect for the humid day. We ordered a few dishes to share & some fresh juice. <br/><br/>I’d wanted to try their famous Fish Finger Butty for a long time & I’m happy to report that it was even better than I’d expected. The crumbed rockling fillets were perched on top of a finely cut dill & cabbage salad with crushed pea aioli on a brioche bun. It was heavenly. The dill & cabbage salad was light & fresh and paired perfectly with the crispy fish fillets. The crushed pea aioli was a nice touch & added another fresh element to the dish. I absolutely loved this dish & will go back to have it again. Adding the hand cut chips was also a great addition. <br/><br/>The potato rosti was served with cauliflower purée, roasted cauliflower, pickled beetroot, salsa verde, chilli oil, streaky bacon & a poached egg. We really enjoyed the creamy cauliflower purée & the rosti but perhaps a little bit too much going on in this dish. <br/><br/>We finished with the Apple Bircher, a very pretty dish, orange caramel, fruit, buckwheat crumble, sweet labne & a rosewater poached pear. It was a great dish to finish our meal, not too sweet & we really enjoyed the sweet labne. <br/><br/>The service at Saint James was fast & friendly, the staff seemed to know their regular customers & we thoroughly enjoyed our brunch. If you visit, try the Fish Finger Butty, it was a cracker of a dish. Thanks so much for having us.

Such a cute little cafe! We sat outside on a warm Melbourne day and it was lovely. We started with coffee and hot chocolate, both were delicious and creamy and hot the spot. I then had the superfood granola which was both gluten free and vegan (served with pandan coyo). It was a light breakfast but the fresh fruit and the mango purée gave it a sweetness that was very satisfying. We also tried the potato rosti dish - it was rich and hearty and definitely a winner. The presentation was also on point. I’ll definitely be back! <br/>Thanks for having us!

We called into Saint James on a sunny Sunday morning with brunch in mind. The place was packed with all the outside tables taken up with brunchers and their four legged friend. We were lucky enough to get the wide bench seat looking out at the front of the venue.<br/><br/>Coffee for starters and it was a smooth blend with a good milk foam and associated milk art. I ordered a Immunity smoothie which was made with almond milk and was delicious and not overly sweet despite having a fair amount of mango. <br/><br/>We ordered the potato rosti and the fish finger butty (the child in me just had to try this).<br/><br/>The rosti had a clever use of chilli oil and garlic in this dish bringing a smack in your face level of flavour the beetroot and egg help temper the heat leaving a perfect after burn humming on your lips. The cauliflower two ways was great adding a lovely smooth texture to add to the potato Rosti and the florets some texture and little flavour bombs, I’m not sure what was on them but they where absolutely delicious.<br/><br/>Those Fish fingers are nothing like I had ever had at home. This housemade variety of crumbed rockling are next level, the brioche bun adding a great combination of sweetness and the inclusion of mint, peas and cabbage gave an great level of freshness to each bite. This dish certainly didn’t disappoint and the hand cut chips were nice too... although we added plenty of salt to these. <br/><br/>A great little cafe which seems to have a great local following and some really interesting unique menu items.<br/><br/>Thanks so much for inviting us in.

In Short: Saint James Café in Melbourne’s quaint inner suburb of Malvern blends the best of traditional English favourites with a flare that delivers plates on par with the city’s best cafes. The local feel of the space, with its attention to quality and flavour, make for the ideal stage to enjoy comfort food at it’s best. Tip: The Fish Finger Butty is to die for!

Glass-fronted St James is nestled away in the middle of Malvern Road shopping strip. This unassuming cafe can be a little-blink-and-you-miss-it, which you shouldn’t as it’s got some stunning dishes on offer...

Whether you're after inside seating, outside seating, or insider seating that ventures outside the box, I have two words for you: Saint James. Great courtyard space.<br/><br/>Does this cafe take its namesake from LeBron James? I hope so -- that'd be ultra cool! These guys get all the shots in (like they've doing it for a lifetime).
Gastrology
Saint James Cafe is the British-themed cousin of From on High, Hard Pressed, Small Print Pizza Bar, Pedro Espresso and Yorkshire Brewhouse. <br/><br/>The café is the realisation of British owners Craig Tate and Rich Donovan's dream and named after St. James' Park, the home of Tate and Donovan's favourite football club Newcastle United.<br/><br/>The airy and casual café delivers a delicious menu of English-inspired brunch fare alongside excellent coffee. While the English theme is not immediately obvious, the influence is certainly there, resulting in a very interesting and compelling brunch proposition.

We live locally, easily the best coffee in the area. Service is great, food is delicious. I had the bircher with a poached pear - full of flavour & very filling. We will be back!!

Lovely cafe in Malvern. Nice selections to choose from off the menu, fresh, impressively presented food. Most importantly however, the food was delicious. Good selection of freshly squeezed juices plus bonus...finally a cafe that uses metal straws!! None of this paper crap! Yay Saint James. Thumbs up!!!
Little Picky Very Hungry
This cafe pops up constantly on my feed, finally they got my attention. Yep! Adding Activated Charcoal in your food is the new trend, I still can’t get over how amazing the charcoal latte from Brighton Soul was. So you know, the ACTIVATED CHARCOAL HOTCAKES ($19) with blackberry gel, lemon curd, chocolate soil, pistachio mascarpone with mixed berries 🥞⚫️🍓just too special to not try. <br/>.<br/>Pancakes do taste like activated charcoal, the texture was light and fluffy, worked really well with the blackberry gel. However, mixed berries were missing from the dish 🤔❓<br/>.<br/>We also feel like something savoury, we opted for the OCEAN TROUT CROQUETTES ($21) 🐠🔶. It was nice but only a tiny bit of grilled pineapple on the plate. With that money, I’d love them to give us two poached eggs instead of one. A bit overpriced I think.<br/>.<br/>Coffee was decent, service was ok. But there’s a 10% surcharge on the weekend, just ridiculous to me. Overall this place is just standard, not in a rush to come back.
Tinmans Treats
Saint or sinner? Will this cafe take me to church, or will I feel like I've gone to hell? I've been here a couple of times, the last time I had their carrot bruschetta which was very tasty - and so much carrot that I didn't need my glasses for a week. <br/><br/>I came here on the holy day (Sunday) from an invite from the venue. I decided to try the black pudding with fried egg, potatas bravas and crutons. Black pudding is polarising so you either love it or hate it.  I didn't mind this black pudding, it was quite a large serving so try it when you're hungry. Going with the modern british theme, black pudding is very british. <br/><br/>My friend had the brisket with eggs hollandaise. That dish was particularly good, well presented, nice fatty brisket, well sauced and salsa'ed (not a word). I'd come back for this dish, and the carrot bruschetta. <br/><br/>The coffee was well done - barista skills on point, and is the basis for any cafe to do well. I also tried a couple of their juices which were also satisfying. <br/><br/>I like the homely interior of Saint James. The spearmint and white tables are very iconic to Saint James. The courtyard is a nice option for those when the weather is nice. Friendly staff, there's a family feel to this cafe, but you see the person coming in just to get their caffeine fix - it feels like Malvern's pop in local cafe.

Food is not bad. Had the granola. It was really tasty but not enough yogurt for what else was on the plate. Service was poor and I had to remind them of my order. Others who came in after me received theirs, and the coffee was not that hot.

Quaint little malvern cafe <br/><br/>Scrumptious food, friendly staff, prompt and attentive service....<br/><br/>Coffee needs a bit of work.....<br/><br/>Overall a pleasant experience....<br/><br/>Toodles

Came here after hearing some good stuff anout the place and wasn't disappointed.<br/><br/>The coffee here is great. We got lattes and long blacks and both were very good. Their jucies are also quite refreshing.<br/><br/>In terms of food, we ordered the Eggs Benedict, Wild Mushrooms, Chilli Scramble and the Hotcakes.<br/><br/>The Benedict was very good. The meat was soft and tasty. I quited enjlyed the subtle sweetness of the apples that made the dish even better and not too heavy.<br/><br/>The chilli scramble was also very good. One of the more flavorful chilli scrambles I have had. We ll seasoned, soft and not dry.<br/><br/>Wild mushrooms were great too. The mushroomss were flavoured which was kinda reminiscent to a bourbon glaze flavour? anyway ot was nice that it had some flavour to it. We enjoyed this dish the most.<br/><br/>Unfortunately the downside was the hotcakes. We came mid-week and wasnt a busy day. So I am assuming there was only one in the kitchen. Our hotcakes came out extremely late. After a few worried looks given to the floor staff we were informed the hotcakes would take a little longer. When it did come it looked beautiful but.. the bottom was almost completely black and the middle of the hotcake was undercook. We assumed they had burnt a couple before ours came out.<br/>We had a couple of bites and left the rest.<br/><br/>Despite the hotcakes mishap, everything else about this place we quite enjoyed and we left quite satisfied.

Went yesterday for brunch, coffee was beautiful. However, found a hair in the food and was still charged for it. Service was slow and terrible.

My new fav. Perfect vibe and great space. Friendly service. Really good coffee and super yum food. I had hot cakes and for the first time in soooo long there was PERFECT amount of lemon curd, fruit and mascarpone for the job. Husband had the Saint Benedict with added bacon (best bacon in some time too 🥓), everything about it was spot on. Also had a purple power fresh juice which tasted as great as it looked. Will def be back!

3.5 of 5<br/>I went all the way to this place due to the high ratings, and I was disappointed except for the coffee, which was excellent. My dish was good enough, but nothing especial. I had the bacon mash cake dish and it was lovely;  I especially liked the accompanying sauces and pickles and a the overall dish. However, if you mention 'bacon' together with 'mash, I expect the bacon to be more noticeable.<br/>Friendly staff.<br/>OK premises

3.5 <br/>Having brunch at Saint James was a very good way to spend my Sunday morning. I ordered the Giant Bacon Hash while my partner opted for the Carrot Bruschetta. The serving I received was indeed giant and the lovely scent it produced prompted me to immediately tuck in. I would’ve preferred actual rashers of bacon over the chunks embedded in the hash, but nonetheless, potato, bacon and egg is a winning combo. The pea puree and pickled cabbage added another layer of textures and flavours and worked incredibly well everything else on the plate. A must-order if you love big mouthfuls of quintessential brunch ingredients like poached egg, hash and bacon. <br/><br/>Eager to try something a little different, we went with the carrot bruschetta. Be warned, this dish is loaded with carrots, so I would only suggest ordering this if you love your carrots. With carrot smashed, honey glazed carrots, black bean hummus and fried cauliflower- this made for a very earthy tasting dish, not to mention super healthy! For me, I would have preferred some other ingredients to balance out the carrots. Although we loved the presentation of the dish, the bright and earthy colours were truly beautiful.

Very friendly staff even at Sunday brunch time. We had the port glazed wild mushrooms and giant bacon hash which were both relish. Great coffee too.

We were in the area and found this little gem. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Portions weren’t crazy oversized. I had the bacon smash which was just truly delicious, well worth a try. My watermelon juice was a little underwhelming and when my friend went to the bathroom it was unfortunately blocked as it was quite old but these are minor things. All in all I would totally revisit on a weekend for a nosh up.<br/>
Dina Kerr
Welcome yourself to a spacious cafe with a grand door and massive glass walls letting in the sun to dinning area. The service is fast even on a just Sunday. If you don’t mind paying %10 on sat and sun. The serves are minimal we had an issue with single slice of bread but our concern was quickly attended to by a lovely floor manager who treated us to a small sweet treat and apologised.

Delicious! Best pancakes ever had! Porridge was amazing. Will definitely be back! Great coffee also, very smooth ☕️ Have blankets outside for the cold weather
Whenfoodsonpoint
A small cafe located in Malvern which has plenty of nearby parking. The menu was very British and it reminded us of our time we spent in the UK. The food was yummy and the cafe was nice and cosy. The service was a little bit of a let down with one of the dishes serving poached eggs instead of the scrambled eggs we asked for. Apart from that, it was a nice experience.

Good selection of interesting breakfast and lunch dishes. Great coffee and delicious meals. Prices are fair, service was great, and the ambience is bright and refreshing.
Spudsburgeradventures
Small but bright cafe, it knows what the customers like and they do it bloody well. Service is great, food is great, coffee is great, just a fantastic experience all around really. I particularly loved how many locals came in and had a genuine relationship with the staff, playing with the kids and creating a great sense of community, it’s places like this that make me want to come back.

I've been a frequent Saint James attendee for over three years now, and am dedicated. I've got this Malvern cafe up my brunch rotation sleeve and am happy to travel the 20+ minutes to get here. There have been some staffing issues from time to time unfortunately, which caused some minor issues, but these have quickly been resolved.<br/>This cafe has by far the best chilli scrambled eggs I have ever had, that are actually spicy (surprising I know, as many cafes claim to have 'chilli' eggs which are in fact as bland as anything). The pikelets are a dream as well and change flavours seasonally. I cannot wait for the mandarin and sage variety to return. They are a wonderful menu option without the ghastly sickly-sweetness that you come to unfortunately expect from a sweet breakfast dish. The fish finger butty is also a fantastic British take on hangover food (or 'screw it, I'm eating fried fish for breakfast' option).<br/>I really love this place, and would highly recommend.

I eat with my eyes so when I saw the Easter waffles special on Instagram I had to go! They were beautiful, although a little dry. The pictures I had seen had strawberries on the plate and mine didn't, so maybe that would have provided a little more moisture. My husband who just likes to order toast and sides really had a win here. A lot of cafes charge the same amount for half the haloumi and tomatoes. The staff were nice, the cafe was nice looking and overall it was a good experience. I'll definitely go back to try the regular menu.

A nice quiet little cafe with quaint deco. My fav is the sambal chilli scrambled eggs, they have a good kick! Coffee is consistently good as is service friendly.

Unfortunately not the best experience here. The service was not great and we literally had to put our hand up for 5 minutes and constantly try to get the attention of the staff, to order. Our coffees were delicious but took 20 minutes to get to the table, even though the restaurant was hardly full. Dishes looked beautiful! However the pork Benedict, didn't come with fresh apple as described on the menu, though the pork was quite delicious. The panacotta was good, but very small in size for the price. Overall, needs improvement before I will come back.

A nice little cafe but probs not worth more than one visit. <br/><br/>Location- very easily accessible by tram or if you are driving in, there is heaps of parking. <br/><br/>Service- nice staff. Really friendly and quick. <br/><br/>Coffee- Great coffee :) <br/><br/>Food- Food was good but nothing too great. VERY VERY pricey for the quantity. Ordered the breakfast bowl and what I was served was not worth $18.50. The serving is way too small and there is nothing too special about the food. <br/><br/>Sure it was worth the visit once, but will not be going back.
Brunch Diaries
I really like the food at Saint James. It’s obvious that dishes haven’t just been thrown together and there has been a decent level of thought allocated to each dish as a concept. The English approach is seen in fleeting aspects here and there, for instance the apple sauce on the benedict, Robs Black pudding, the baked apple on the granola. They’ve even gone as far as to put HP sauce on the tables.<br/>The Eggs Benedict was very good, the pork was definitely the star of the show. The eggs were poached perfectly and the sliced apple underneath the pork was nice. I didn’t expect the apple sauce to have such a heavy chilli kick and on reflection maybe I would have preferred It sweeter, it would definately have complemented the pork better had it been. <br/>The port glazed mushrooms were also really nice. The port works extremely well. <br/>The coffee was good and the service was friendly. <br/>All round a nice relaxing place to eat. Without a full English or fried slice to be seen.
Soyeggs
Dissapointed that i found out they didn't put avocado on my breakfast bowl for takeaway, and also no sesame brittle pieces on my peanut choco hotcakes

Came here with a friend for brunch this morning. We were immediately greeted with a warm welcome and service was friendly and attentive throughout our experience. <br/><br/>We ordered 2 juices and the following: <br/><br/>Apple and blackberry bircher muesli 🍏<br/>Helathy, filling, not too sweet and perfectly refreshing brekky item for summer 👌🏻loved the whole baked apple on top! <br/><br/>Saint benedict 🍳<br/>The most delicious hollandaise sauce (I think has fruity tones in it?!) on top of perfectly poached eggs, pulled pork and fresh apple slices. Amazing ❤️ <br/><br/>Would come back again to try some more dishes, and possibly sit in the courtyard dining area if it wasn't so hot like today!

Beautiful Smashed Avo and the most generous portion of eggs benny. This was a clear winner for ‘the-whole-package’ (ambience, service, food, atmosphere, coffee) for us. That benny easily topped our charts. Little courtyard just out back but wouldn’t recommend sitting there on a windy there. I’d come back after a day at uni (monash caully students - it’s just a few bus stops away! 💕) and indulge again

Carrot bruschetta was top notch! Found it pretty quiet at the time we were there (which surprising since it was lunchtime), but it was a nice cafe.
Pastry.loving.foodie
I came to Saint James on a cold rainy day, but the vibrancy of the colour scheme kept us with positive spirits for the day. They were relatively quiet when we walked in late in the morning - only one other table to order. The menu is inspired by classic English cuisine; English cuisine has almost always been incorporated into my diet so I was excited, and it's one of few cafes where I have seen fish fingers and piklets amongst other menu items. <br/><br/>We ordered a cappuccino, hot chocolate (at a separate time), a benedict and I had ordered eggs with bacon and hand cut chips. I believe $19.50 is quite steep for the portion and its price, especially given the inexpense of eggs and toast when bought in wholesale. Just eggs on toast was $11 itself (2 eggs, 1 piece of toast) which is significantly higher than it really should be. My partners benny was great, definitely executed all the aspects of a pulled meat benedict. Mine was fine, but nothing out of the usual. (That might've been my own fault from not ordering from the menu!). What was more concerning is that my waiter seemed inattentive or lacking drive that particular morning, and felt somewhat cold towards us. He did mention it had been exhaustingly busy beforehand so I had some leniency. My Hot Chocolate never came, and despite my own fault for not asking again about it, he hadn't written it down at all as an order. <br/><br/>Overall okay experience, I like the menu theme but think it's overpriced for the portion sizes you get.

Potential to be great but quite sub-par. There was no atmosphere, it felt like both staff and customers didn't really want to be there. The food was good, the quinoa salad was nice but not a lot of salmon for the price. Nice but wouldn't return.

Food was good but not great. Had the Benny and Boucher museli . It was good and tasty Service and coffee was really good. Will definitely try again.

Nice little place in Malvern, away from the busy brunch spots. Food is awesome and service was even better. Coffee was good, so definitely a thumbs up for your next brunch spot

A British-inspired cafe found in the affluent suburb of Malvern, Saint James Cafe offers a nostalgic experience with their typical British fare (think mushy peas, fish finger butty and black pudding) served alongside specialty organic teas, in their cute outdoor courtyard. Owned by U.K. expats and long-time friends, Craig Tate and Richard Donovan, their childhood memories and love for the local football team inspire Saint James Cafe’s unique take on the Melbourne brunch scene.

Saint James is a lovely local cafe situated in the heart of Malvern Village, that offers its customers a refreshingly unique British take on the Melbourne cafe scene.  Enjoy a deliciously wholesome line up of all day brunch and lunch options that will make you feel right at home.  They even offer a great selection of drinks, which include specialty teas and coffee, as well as Mork Hot Chocolate and freshly squeezed juices.

Lovely courtyard at the back, beautiful to sit in on a lazy sunny morning. One of the few places that offer proper black pudding, had a nice light crumb from frying, texture was still soft and there was a hint of pepper and herb. The menu is modern British inspired and you can easily imagine these dishes at a good gastropub. <br/>I order a strong latte which is lighter than I'm used to but still well balanced.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Nearly a year on from opening, Saint James maintains the same philosophy: to create a British-inspired menu using as much of their ingredients as possible, to reduce wastage. It's always interesting visiting Saint James to get a taste of Brit-inspired brunch fare.

Beautiful cafe! New local best in the area! Amazing menu options, you could see how and taste how fresh the ingredients were (loved that all were organic). Great coffee. Can't wait to come back already 😍

Lovely brunch spot, friendly service! I came to Saint James with my family for brunch yesterday and had the Avo and Pea smash and Prana Chai with almond milk - it was delicious and well presented! Will definitely be back to this great local spot x

You would no doubt recognise the white and green table tops if you've flicked through the photos at this cafe. Located near Tooronga train station (on the Glen Waverley line), 1P parking is available along Malvern Rd (where the cafe is located) and 2P parking on an adjacent street, on Carkwell St. Both have no limit after 1pm on a Saturday and no limit all day Sunday.<br/><br/>We arrived at 11:30am on a Sunday and sat outside in the small outdoor courtyard with the white and green table tops. Blankets were available at each table with gas heaters switched on for warmth making a sunny winter brunch most comfortable. The cafe is only 9.5 months old and is a cousin cafe to Pedro Espresso (St Kilda) and Hard Pressed (East Malvern). It's dog friendly (the dogs themselves were also very friendly!), with two dogs joining us on our winter brunch date.<br/><br/>The menu is english inspired (thanks to the two owners who are childhood friends from UK) with an all day brunch menu and a small lunch menu. The dishes we had were beautifully executed with great flavour, texture and was importantly, satisfying. The special trout three ways was a light meal with a perfectly crisp crouton and trout prepared in three ways while the carrot bruschetta had a nice sweetness from the carrots and honey which was well balanced with the red pepper hummus.<br/><br/>A beautiful cafe which I no doubt will be taking my friends to.<br/><br/>Dishes that make up this review:<br/><br/>- Trout three ways from the specials (at the time of writing this, this is no longer an available special); cured trout, smoked trout pate, cured trout tartare with sourdough croutons, lime, aioli, sriracha and confit egg yolk ($23)<br/><br/>- Carrot bruschetta; carrot and cumin smash, honey glazed carrots, fried cauliflower, red pepper hummus, pistachios on multigrain bread ($19)<br/><br/>- Mocha ($4)<br/><br/>- Greet tea ($4.60)<br/><br/>The Fo0die dined as a guest of Saint James and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service. <br/><br/>Follow me on Instagram for more photos: @fo0die

Saint James Cafe is a warm and welcoming cafe located on Malvern Rd. It is lovely to be greeted with hellos as you enter. The inside of the cafe has a nice and relaxing atmosphere and there is a great amount of room between tables. There is also a fantastic outdoor area which would be lovely to sit in and soak up the sun in summer. <br/>We arrived for brunch and choose a few dishes to enjoy. We had the Strawberries and Cream pikelets, the Carrot Bruschetta (new dish on the menu) and put together our own dish of sourdough toast with scrambled eggs, bacon, roasted tomato, avocado and green pea smash. We also had a cappuccino and hot chocolate. Our own dish we ordered was plated well and was lovely to eat. The Carrot Bruschetta was a wonderful wintery dish and had some nice flavours. Our favourite one though was the Strawberries and Cream Pikelets. The pikelets were so light and fluffy. The vanilla creme fraiche and strawberries went so well together. And I always enjoy when a sweet dish includes meringue. Just a wonderful and delicious dish. <br/>The coffee and hot chocolate was great too. You could definitely have a few cups while spending your time relaxing and sitting in their lovely cafe. Thanks guys for having us and we loved your friendly hospitality.

We have found our new local cafe!! With the fluffiest pancakes EVER, the best avo and pea smash plus delicious spicy chilli scrambled eggs! Every dish we had was beautiful in presentation and in quality. Thanks so much Craig, your service was immaculate!

Love this place. Great coffee, great service and even better food! Chilli scrambled eggs are the absolute best. Craig and Richie are so lovely too. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

One of the places that make me say WOW. Had the scrambled eggs with black pudding and pikelets and both were perfect 10/10 dishes. Flavors were not too overwhelming. The coffee was one of the best I've had. The outdoor area in the back added to the charm. Would highly recommend this place.

What "love" can do ..... here we go here we go .....<br/>Two lads from Newcastle, England, former High school buddies decided to travel across the globe and set up a cafe in my old stomping ground, Malvern, that takes guts. They probably felt the need to leave home, Newcastle, looking for a sunnier pasture down under, because their football (soccer here) team haven’t been going so well in the last decade, being relegated from the EPL recently (not to be mistaken with IPL ladies or men) - English Premier League.<br/>I can still recalled star footballers; David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer in the Black & White stripes terrorising my team, Liverpool FC in the 90's - I think, deep down we all "hate" anything Black & White, just like those Colliwobbles, sorry Collingwood FC (AFL equivalent).<br/>So it was appropriate that 9 months ago these lads set up a cafe named after their football team stadium, Saint James Park - Saint James Cafe, a street sign on the wall will confirm that.<br/>I'm just so glad to have been invited by Liz and to have made my way to Saint James Cafe, which is next door to Saint James Opp Shop, no relation, just a mere great coincidence.<br/>On the main esplanade of Malvern Rd food centrum. simple, pastel tone, clean cut, casual, chic, trendy, green/floral, friendly, approachable and yet "professional" looking. Choice of undercover footpath, inside and outdoor dining areas. The brick paved backyard is super cozy, simple "Aussie" chic, closer to the "covered outdoor walkway" toilet too, pity it was drizzling, cold ...... the boys must have brought that from England and forgot to declare it at Border Control.<br/>Gotta love their simple, easy, concise, smartly packed Menu, some Aussie breakfast/brunch favourites and some English inspired meals; mashed avocado and "peas" (hallelujah moment for some), Rob's Black Pudding, Saint Benedict (Pork shoulder) - which will be tried on the next trip and good ol' Fish & Chips :-)<br/>I cleaned my simple yet good looking semi bowl plate of Chili Scrambled Eggs, as did my partner in crime, she did not leave anything of her Port Glazed Wild Mushrooms either. They are well made, well balanced, well presented, inviting, scrumptious, generous, delicious and next time I will request they turn up the heat in their chilli - Sambal, that's just me, you eat at your own risk.<br/>They are super serious about their coffee too, maybe its the Melbourne's influence, Slayer and Mahlkonig and local boutique Maker Fine Coffee beans are in the house.I thoroughly enjoyed their short black and Latte this morning.<br/>Thank you Liz, Craig, Rich, Martin and the rest team for hosting us at your work of "love", surely you can stand tall amongst the many compatriot cafes around.<br/>All we need now is a big screen to watch their beloved team Newcastle United "live" for 2017-18 EPL season, they are back in the big boys league. Offcourse while having their delicious and scrumptious meals and coffee – they’ve still got the accent too, very authentic "English" brunch experience - "A British take on the Melbourne coffee scene" - website and I couldn't agree more with that.<br/>That's what "love" can do .....

What a fantastic little cafe! Black pudding and the Saint James Benedict was amazing. Service and coffee suburb. If we lived closer this would be our local for sure. Definitely be back

Saint James is a cafe with a British inspired menu and theme located in the suburb of Malvern. As the English Cousin of From on High, Hard Pressed, Small Print Pizza Bar, Pedro Espresso and Yorkshire Brewhouse, some of which I have visited in the past, I instantly had high expectations of Saint James.

27/4/17 breakfast-From start to finish saint james had me. The baristas chirpy welcome and banter with locals was great. I ordered a long macchiato And the saint Benedict which wer both great. The Fresh Apple pieces and the spots of Apple purée wer a very well matched partner to the pulled pork . Will definitely be back soon

This place is pretty average. Although I went here with high hopes, I left disappointed. The venue overall is ok however there is a clear lack of attention to detail. By way of example there is white paint spattered all over the front window and all up the sides of the window bench. First impressions count and in my opinion, this is just laziness. Clean it up, it just gives the impression that you don't care. <br/><br/>Food wise, the coffee was ok but average and the food just wasn't that great. The purée on the side of my eggs benedict was quite frankly vile and there was just an overall lack of flavour in the dish.<br/><br/>With a little more attention to detail, this place could be a lot better.
Heidi
Pikelets! My fave! I had the strawberry and cream pikelets with meringue gems and chocolate soil, delicious and the perfect size too! My friend had the green bowl which looked equally relish!

We should like to extend a warm thank you to Craig for inviting us to Saint James. An English style brunch place certainly grabbed our attention and we were eager to check out what they had to offer! <br/><br/>The interior felt very warm and welcoming. Their roof hung plants made me feel nostalgic, as we used to have them at home. I was happy to see it again as not many places have them these days. The geometric wall art creates a modern and funky contrast. Sonos speakers are placed in the corners with music played at a sensible volume. Saint James is truly a relaxing place to be in. <br/><br/>We checked out the menu before we came, Helen and I were both eyeing the fish finger butty. Fish fingers sandwich... straight away we thought of Bird's Eye frozen fish fingers slapped between two slices of bread, we had our doubts with this dish. Luckily, reality was very different to what we imagined. Inside two of the biggest slices of bread we've seen, were pieces of succulent fried Rockling. The fish was crumbed and cooked perfectly, light and crispy. Great choice of fish as it provided the right texture for the soft white bread. The crushed pea aioli and dill & cabbage salad played their supporting roles for this sandwich, but the fish was the star of the show! This is a must try if you come to Saint James. <br/><br/>On the other hand, the house cured, crispy skin ocean trout wasn't so great, it was simply too salty. Seemed as though they were too heavy handed with the salt when making the cure. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, and thought it was just the skin that was salty, but it was actually the whole piece of fish. The broccolini was also overcooked and way too soft. Such a shame, because ocean trout and broccolini are some of my favourite foods.<br/><br/>The service was outstanding and I could tell that a lot of the customers weren't first timers like us. The cafe itself is still young but I'd say it wouldn't take long before it develops a strong following. Although the food was hit and miss for us, we would certainly come back for the delicious fish finger butty! I'm confident that they will keep improving, and wish Saint James all the best for the future. <br/><br/>- D

Find yourself at a rare British-inspired cafe named Saint James in the neighbourly hub of Malvern. We did, as were invited along to sample their brunch menu over a sunny weekend day in March. We had a great experience at Saint James with some top notch presentation, priced about right and at appetite appeasing sizes. Our top recommendation would be to give the unique Fish Finger Butty (an English classic) but you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes we tried. We’d suggest requesting a seat in the courtyard at the back to make the most of the rays. It’s also carries a sense of peacefulness and relaxation that takes you out of the hustle and bustle of the usual busy brunch scene which is what a spot like Malvern is perfect for.

Saint James Cafe is the English Cousin of From on High, Hard Pressed; Small Print Pizza Bar, Pedro Espresso & Yorkshire Brewhouse. I’ve seen some reviews recently on this newly opened café (opened about 7 months ago) and finally had a chance to visit on Sunday and was totally satisfied with the experience.<br/><br/>Craig along with the others at Saint James was exceptional in their services. Love a friendly and happy crew! The café itself was fresh, inviting, and open with a cohesive urban design. I’m a big sucker for designs that include fresh green plants especially that beautiful bird of paradise planter pot in front corner of the café! So chic! Plenty of seatings available, but the tables are a little bit too close to each other which made it a bit uncomfortable to squeeze around. Toilets to the back can do with a lil bit more character.

What a lovely surprise!<br/><br/>Craig and his team were wonderfully attentive and made our Saturday brunch an enjoyable one. English inspired cafe food and relative to another cafe I had previously visited (From On High), Saint James is a wonderful addition to the Malvern area and one to add to your go to's. My fish was a little salty, but that would be the only criticism. Everything married on the plate.<br/><br/>Pikelets tasted as good as they looked, and were a perfect way to finish our dining experience. Will definitely return in future. <br/><br/>Coffee and juice were both satisfying too. Winner!
Split The Bill
I happened to be in Malvern so decided to pop in on Sunday and check out Saint James cafe.<br/>Given it was a muggy day we decided to sit out in the back corner of the busy court yard.  We had an enjoyable breakfast of the kids pancakes - they loved the blueberries and ice cream as well as the spectacular apple muesli, large serving of scrambled eggs on toast with bacon on the side and the Saint Benedict. The fresh tropical juice and mint juice were both very refreshing. The service was very efficient and it was fabulous to see the owners taking orders and serving food, they were very down to earth just like they were on the postcards TV show episode 7. We will definitely be back.
The New Fave
What defines a good brunch spot? Well to start with, it must have both healthy (e.g. think acai bowls and quinoa creations) and unhealthy (e.g. think the ultimate "hangover cure") options. Good coffee is non negotiable - there is no point going to brunch without it.  And finally, it must have outdoor seating - who wants to be cramped inside on a beautiful sunny day.  Offering some of the best coffee I have had in awhile, an incredible delicious looking menu, and a plethora of outdoor seating at both the front and back of the venue, Saint James Café meets all of this criteria.
Piggyeatalot
I was invited by the owner of Saint James to try out their menu the other day so a friend and I ventured out to Malvern to check them out.<br/><br/>I kicked off with a soy version of their chocolate milkshake with callebaut Belgian chocolate. I love how the chocolate milkshake wasn't overly sweet yet it still felt very indulgent.<br/><br/>I couldn't decide whether I should get the Saint Benedict or the fish butty and the owner Craig generously let me try both. The portions are huge!!! <br/><br/>The Saint Benedict is Saint James' version of eggs Benedict and there was some serious #yolkporn happening there! Flavoursome and tender pork shoulder, sadly I find the hollandaise wayyyy too rich, even the little piles of grated apples couldn't cut through the richness. I kinda had to avoid the sauce to eat all the yummy pork.<br/><br/>Fish butty, on the other hand, is da bomb!!! The fish was so fresh and the dill and cabbage salad really balanced out the deep fried goodness. I would come back for that. In fact I want to go back right now for that. Too bad they don't open for supper!<br/><br/>My friend had the cured crispy ocean trout and whilst it was super fresh and yummy, it was a little bit too salty. It would be nicer if you mix it up and eat it with the veggies that came with it.<br/><br/>We are not huge coffee drinkers so I can't comment what their coffees are like, but I love it how they had a selection of fresh juices, milkshakes, Mork Chocolate and awesome teas (I spotted a yuzu tea!).<br/><br/>Their service was fantastic (not just to me but with other customers as well!) and as the owners have kids themselves they are super kid friendly and has a kids menu which offers simple and healthy breakfast items.
The Domestic Traveller
I dined courtesy of Craig, one of the owners of Saint James Cafe. Opinions are still my own. And if I had to choose how I would describe my experience? Surpassing Expectations. Consumed: Beef Tacos and Fish Finger Butty. Drank: Coffee – Long Black. Located in Malvern and close to the Tooronga train station, this is one place I would recommend that you catch public transport too. Or have a heap of patience. You will get a car parking spot, and you got to be willing to walk a little, to get the cafe. But once there, this place has the right kind of feel – vintage on the outside and trendy on the inside.
@twogoodtoresist
Saint James is a great melbourne cafe which serves traditional breakfast dishes but with their very own twist/touch. We loved the port glazed mushrooms with a side of avo and pea smash as well as the chilli scramble eggs with cured ocean trout, sambal and a side of roasted tomato. Both dishes were flavoursome, generous in portion and extremely filling. They also serve a variety of freshly squeezed juices which are perfect for these hot summer days. Saint James has a great indoor and outdoor space with good service and fantastic coffee!
Chloe Anderson
Friendly service is hard to come by in these sorts of areas but this quaint little cafe smashed it out of the park. Coffee was great, food looked and tasted amazing. (I recommend the pancakes), and I love the English twist to the menu. Highly recommend giving this cafe a go!
Good Food Good Mood
I'd seen the fish finger butty doing the rounds on Instagram but when my friend decided to order that I was left tossing up between the apple crumble Bircher and the cured trout with carrot and cumin purée. I asked the waitress what to order and she advised the trout as they only had one portion left. It was only 12.05pm so that was utterly baffling to me but dear God I wish I hadn't listened to her it was awful. I'm absolutely convinced the chef has no idea about balance as it was unbelievably oily and salty and yes I realise curing a dish involves salt but surely it generally also involves lime or another type of acid and this tasted as though it had lived the last ten years encased in a thick seasalt coating. Yes trout is naturally oily so if you are going to serve that quantity of it look at the ratio of your sides. It was desperately lacking something to cut through so I ordered the alleged 'purple juice' which was apparently supposed to have beetroot in it but it was orange coloured and tasted of nothing but an obscene amount of ginger. I found myself having to drink a litre of water to counteract all the salt and spice and left half my meal on the plate. As we went to pay the cashier asked the obligatory how was everything and my friend gave the standard it was good. But I thought you know what I'm going to be honest so I said it was actually very salty and had a response was well yes it's cured in salt. I didn't harp on the issue but just because an ingredient is used doesn't mean it has to entirely overpower the dish and I was pretty unimpressed with that lack of apology. Any other place where you don't enjoy your meal and leave half of it on the plate you are at least offered a sincere sorry and a discount. Safe to say I will never return to this unenjoyable establishment
DuckieLovesToEat
I met up her with one of my girlfriends. It is such a neat place. I didn't realise how big it was until I had to use the toilet which was located right behind this cafe. I really like how they furnished this establishment. As per usual, I order their pikelets and a glass of passion juice. The pikelets are picture perfect and tasted really good same with their juice. We also had a very friendly waiter. Although, my friend and I stayed a little bit longer and chatted a bit, we didn't feel rushed at all. I recommend this place and don't mind coming back.

I'm going to say it straight up- I'm going back here as soon as I can! Loved every part of my experience! Starting with service- great advice on dishes and attentiveness to our needs. We ordered their famous Saint Benedict and scrambled eggs on toast with extra mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. I LOVED the saint benedict but there was just so much of it to finish! The scrambled eggs on toast was also a big serve.. you can hardly complain about prices when their portions are so large! The coffees were also a big hit! Like I said.. I'll be back!<br/><br/>And just to confirm that I had chosen a great cafe for my brunch.. postcards were filming there when I was leaving!

Looking for a new place to try, we decided to give Saint James a go. First impressions are impressive as the places gives off a locals and family type vibe, which is rather refreshing. It was a little quiet, so that may put some of you off, but it's a bonus in my book. The staff are very friendly and pleasant to deal with. Onto the food then, with both the missus and myself choosing the strawberries and cream pikelets. It was a nice mix of flavours that left you content, though I'd would've preferred a little bit more of the strawberry and a little less of the cream. A content meal, but I'd say that it'll be more the ambience of the place that'll have you coming back. <br/>Anyways, that's just one review amongst many, not necessarily the baseline!

Cute little space & the atmosphere of the place is really relaxing. Just came here for a juice (& a sneaky brownie) with a friend, the juice was really refreshing, staff were friendly & the music was nice as well. Would like to come back here for brunch ✌🏻

The options for lunch on a cold and rainy public holiday were limited -  I'm glad we found Saint James.  It's a light and bright cafe - pastel walls and tables, blond wood and indoor plants - serving all day breakfast and brunch.<br/><br/>The salads were light and delicious - curried chicken fillets atop giant couscous and a creamy, mildly spiced dressing  and  roasted eggplant, cauliflower and quinoa with the pop of fresh mint and peas.  The chicken sarnie was sufficient to feed at least eight hungry supermodels or one starving rugby player!  <br/><br/>It was not difficult to choose a dessert.  The muffin was never going to win out over a salted caramel brownie - warm and oozy and served with ice-cream.  It was a bit on the sweet side but enjoyable nonetheless.<br/><br/>Service was friendly and attentive, prices were reasonable.

Such a shame ~ great menu but the layout & the staffing levels are poor. The coffee is so-so, usually on the cool side but service is the real disappointment. I live locally and we have ten cafes of this ilk in walking distance so to stand out you need a WOW factor ... St James had it with a quirky menu (eg Apple Quinoa Muesli) but the speed of service compared to Where is Henry across the road, Neon Tiger or Mr Foxx will leave you cold. Having just waited 10 minutes to be served I was advised that a large party was soon arriving and that I needed to move ~ I obliged by walking up the road to Neon Tiger ✅

Saint James is a small hard working cafe with staff that know they need to be polite, engaging and generous with the food offered. Flavours are tantalising on the taste buds. The coffee well made.<br/>The kitchen creates good hearty food with the classic hollandaise sauce made perfectly.<br/>An individual Kids Menu is on the table which I will include in the photos I post now.<br/>The Pulled Pork Saint Benedict which is very filling included two poached eggs plus toast will last the whole day and should be eaten when really hungry. <br/>An outside eating area is available in the front and in the rear of this worthwhile eatery.<br/>
Linnie Eats All The Food
Malvern, the inner east suburb in Melbourne with cutie patootie houses and great places to eat so it’s no surprise that the new up and coming English inspired cafe Saint James Cafe opened up right on the main street. When you step inside, you’re greeted by the lovely and friendly staff and you can just literally park your tooshie anywhere you wish. We decided to head out to the courtyard seeing as Melbourne’s weather was exceptionally sunny today. It’s a such a cosy environment and the little plants hanging around add a touch of colourful nature.

As a British inspired cafe, Saint James offers up delicious and generous brunch options that’s bound to satisfy. The flavours of the dishes here were unique and well balanced, and with flawless execution, it was an enticing brunch to say the least.<br/><br/>Having been to their sister cafe of my still-favourite brunch joint “From on High”, today’s experience at St James surely didn’t disappoint one bit, and it’s evident that the quality of food and service is consistent across their many venues.
Sweet And Sour Fork
The most popular item currently on the menu is the Saint Benedict ($19.5), and it’s really not hard to see why. The thick slice of toasted sourdough was topped with a mound of tender pulled pork, two beautifully poached eggs, and creamy hollandaise sauce with just a hint of tanginess. It was a substantial and satisfying meal, the richness of which was tempered with sweet apple puree, and batons of crisp Granny Smith.

Craig Tate and Rich Donovan, the duo behind Saint James Cafe, have been best of friends since they were 10. Growing up together in Gateshead England they played a lot of football (aka. soccer). It would be 15 years later that they would open a cafe in Melbourne, serving up a menu inspired by their English heritage. At first I assumed the naming sense was because St James Op Shop was next door. However it was just a happy coincidence, as it is actually to pay homage to the home of their favourite football (soccer) club, Newcastle United.

Saint James says ‘Make brunch, not waste’. This British themed cafe is a story of two mates, leaving their hometown, travelling far and wide and opening a taste of home in Melbourne. The home of the Brexit is quite different from the land down under. There’s no question, our climate is hotter, the people are relaxed and the cafe culture is A-grade. But there’s much to love about the Poms, the British classics make you think of warm pubs and snowy nights. Oh and the football! I’m sorry Aussies, but soccer is a far superior game. In fact, Craig and Rich named Saint James Cafe after Saint James Park in Newcastle – home to Newcastle United. There’s not much to say about the

Sundays are my absolute favourite days to head out for a meal despite any sightings of gloomy weather. As I was feeling under the weather that day and doubting the accuracy of my taste buds then, I beckoned the sister and a friend to tag along with me as I visit this cafe. Owner Craig was very accommodating to the bunch of us (despite my feeble attempts at trying to be audible) and in terms of service, very friendly and efficient - could not ask for anything more comforting especially after working 6 days a week.

Not great, not terrible. Coffee was lovely however the food has a lot of potential on paper only as the execution was a bit lacking. The take on bubble and squeak comes out as a small, perfectly round patty on sourdough (why?) with not too much else flavour wise going. Might try again as the sarnies did look delish...

What a disappointment I must say. The menu is not extensive, and doesn't offer kids menu. The food and coffee was very average but the service was very good! The waitor was very attentive and caring.

English style cafe with an epic courtyard perfect for sunny days. Me and my partner went here on the weekend and the food is spectacular (Try the house made ricotta its to die for). Heaps of great choices with classic english dishes like fish finger butties and bubble & squeak! To top it off they do amazing coffee. Will be back

Classic British brunch fare and Melbourne cafe are probably two things you wouldn’t usually expect to see together in the same sentence. Let’s put it in the south-eastern suburb of Malvern and things just got a little interesting. Recently opened Saint James is the brain child of two Brit mates who did the backpacker thing, never left, and decided to bring a taste of home to Melbourne; starting with the name which stems from their home town of Newcastle’s football ground.
FOOD TRIP
Saint James is a local café in Malvern that strives to use local and seasonal produce to create some pretty awesome dishes. Their food is generous in size and plentiful in flavour. My favourite was the Saint Benedict! Their coffees are also very en pointe. Beautiful coffee art and smooth, easy to drink coffee. A café I would highly recommend!

I'm a great fan of Rob's British Butcher, but can't be bothered traipsing to Dandenong every time I want a hit of good old British fry-up. So we were VERY excited to see his black pudding on the menu here. <br/><br/>The staff were really welcoming and the fit out is fresh, bright and inviting. We sat outside in the sun and really enjoyed our brunch. We had the bubble and squeak and eggs on toast, each with an extra serve of the black stuff.<br/><br/>Really delicious. The sourdough toast was thick and toasted perfectly. Coffees were good too.<br/><br/>I just wish they'd add Lorne sausage to their menu - I'd be there every single day.<br/><br/>...Hey-ho, back to Dandenong I go.

Tried out the NKOTB with the long suffering lady. Put a couple of coffees down quick smart as I was battling a little from Grand Final Day. Coffee is good but was very hot which takes a bit away from the overall flavour. Food was nice, crab scrambled eggs for me and it was really good. Little Chief had the Pork Benedict which looked good but the pork was roasted and not slow cooked so hence a little dry and didn't have enough sauce to add the required moisture to the pork. Overall quite good and it's only new so will go back again for sure, staff were really cool and friendly which helps. Cheers guys and good luck!

Delish food!! Definitely recommend the egg Benedict, eggs were perfectly poached! Coffee is so good, will be back to by some of the beans when they start selling them. <br/>Staff are really lovely and food came out quickly.

Place was pumping when we arrived, but staff were attentive and drinks and food wait times were short. Breakfast was delicious! Perfect poached eggs and interesting menu. Compliments to the chef!

Very nice. High quality food and great service. Coffee is a bit meh, but in no way bad. Would recommend a visit. <br/>

Lobbed in to Saint James by accident, but we won't be back by accident it will definitely be on purpose.  One child had toast and vegemite and was well satisfied, the other had the pancakes with mandarin infused creme freche and honeycomb and was overwhelmed by the yumminess of it.  Hubby had the Ploughman's lunch (I stole a pickle and it was yum!) and I had the Chicken Sarnie with madras curry flavours which was simply delightful.  Tea and coffee was dutifully bought and drunk and a lovely arvo sitting in the courtyard was enjoyed by all.  It has the hipster feel you expect in most cafes these days, but whoever is coming up with their menu knows what they are doing.

i couldn't be happier with the service, the atmosphere, the food and the COFFEE!!this place is the perfect place to go with friends and family, such a friendly environment and i left with a massive smile on my face after having the fish finger sarnie!!! <br/><br/>HIGHLY RECOMMEND GUYS!!

New local gem, serving great coffee and delicious food. Interiors deco, is simplistic with pops of colour that invites you in to relax and have a cup of coffee. Friendly attentive staff all the times I've been there, quick service. Coffee is great, and food is delicious new twists on old favourites! Go visit enjoy, perfect place for brunch or weekday coffees with friends. 🍴

I'm very happy to have another funky little café along this strip. However, I'm just not understanding the menu. So far I've had the pikelets which were visually beautiful and inviting but the flavours just didn't work together. Quite dry the dish had too many elements and I was left disappointed. The honeycomb is amazing though. On a second visit I went for the fish sarnie. Clearly that was the same minty peas and avo as what's on the breakfast menu and it just didn't make sense with that delicious battered fish. The bread was soft and fluffy.<br/>Sadly on all occasions the coffee just has not been hot enough. <br/>Definitely a welcome addition to the hood but some tweaking needs to occur. (some more child friendly options would be a good start and hot coffee!) the service has been lovely each time I've been.

I went for a basic brunch of scrambled eggs and avo, and was sorely disappointed. <br/>The eggs were watery, had a strange, unpleasant consistency and tasted like powdered eggs. <br/>The avo was the same pea and avo smash from other menu options, and rather than confirming that it wasn't fresh sliced avo, it was just provided. I didn't enjoy the flavour at all - which isn't to say it isn't nice as my friend enjoyed it, just not to my taste. <br/>The vibe and design of the Cafe is lovely, as are the staff, service is great etc, but I will not be returning. Cafes that can't get scrambled eggs right are not worth my time.

Stopped in on Sunday afternoon for the Black Pudding and Polenta with the Minty Green juice. I usually wouldn't go for Black Pudding, however thought I'd give it a crack, and it was delicious. So rich in flavour, and the polenta was perfect to combine it with. Then washed it down nicely with a super refreshing green apple, kale and mint juice! I can't wait to get back in again and try their very own specialty coffee and maybe the Pikelets..

Saint James is a cafe that serves hearty and delicious food with excellent service! The place was quite empty at 11am when we arrived but the lunch rush picked up when we left. I had the 'Bubble & squeak' dish with a kaiserfleisch (double smoked, cured pork belly) as an extra. It was a dish that contained unique elements but I really enjoyed it! The pork belly was cooked to perfection. My friends had the same dish as me and the Saint Benedict. They also ordered the 'A Touch of Passion' juice. Highly recommend this cafe :)

I had the "Bubble and squeek" and a cafe latte. Prompt service and delicious food for the price. Service was fast and friendly. The decor was lovely. A nice place to relax and enjoy some good food and coffee

Great food and very friendly and attentive service. Prices were surprisingly reasonable for the quality of the food. Great addition to the area. I had the Saint Benedict dish for breakfast this morning and it was delicious. Will be going back on a regular basis.

We had our Fathers Day breaky here this morning. It was our first visit to this new establishment and it certainly won't be our last. The food was scrumptious and the coffee was heavenly. The wait staff were friendly, attentive and quick to deliver our food.

Was expecting great things from this cafe but was left disappointed. The menu items were fairly limited and nothing special. Had high expectation for their coffee but was fairly average. But the waitor serving us was great and make sure my toddler was served promptly. Would be great if they can review their menu to put in some more items, and a kids menu would be a great bonus as Malvern is surrounded by families.

We both chose dishes from the ‘Sarnies’ menu. I went with the ‘Fish finger butty - market fish, crushed pea aioli, dill and cabbage salad on fresh white bread ($16.00)’. The delightful slabs of fresh bread encased some succulent pieces of fish.

Absolutely love this cafe, I have been here three times and haven't been disappointed once. Having tried the Benedict, pikelets and smashed peas and avo dishes Saint James has me longing for the weekend! Although English in style, Saint James put their own little twists on the classics, a little reminder of home in Melbourne. Delicious.

Checked out Saint James today and the food was as yummy as it looked on all the Instagram pics I've been drooling over. I had a Bubble & Squeak which was delicious and came with fried egg, thick bacon, a mixed vegetable pattie, roast tomato and hollandaise sauce. My BF had the mixed grain porridge and he loved it, probably because it had gin in it. Staff were really friendly and the coffee was the best I've had in the area

Had a delicious brunch at Saint James this morning. Service was a little slow for a start but once we'd ordered the food came out quickly and was super tasty. I ordered the horseradish panacotta with grilled asparagus, crushed hazelnuts, mixed herbs and a poached egg. I also added smoked ocean trout. The savoury panacotta was fantastic and went so well with the trout. Definitely a winner dish. I'll certainly be back to try the rest of the menu.

Staff were friendly and attentive, Loads of them on the floor. Coffee was delicious probably rate it the best in malvern village. But maybe a little bit cold and I'm not one that likes scalding coffee. Food was good but not exceptional was warm not hot when served.<br/><br/>I put this down to second weekend of service and them just getting their trailing wheels off so I will have to go back again once things have settled.

The picture doesn't do my lunch justice. Seriously good food. So many yummy options to choose from but I settled on the sherry glazed mushroom dish. The coffee was great and my friend had a chai which came out in this pretty little teapot.I'm looking forward to visiting again soon

Lovely little brand new cafe with a fun interior. The colourful, geometric design-theme is a refreshing change from the plain white walls and pot plants that seem to be the new standard for Melbourne cafes. <br/><br/>My friend and I arrived around 10.30 and it was very busy, but we managed to get a table straight away. The wait-staff were helpful and very friendly. We both ordered coffees (which were excellent) before ordering food. The menu provided numerous brunch options with an English twist.<br/><br/>I had smashed avocado and peas with a poached egg, my friend ordered mushrooms on toast with homemade cheese. My dish was delicious, I cannot fault it. My friend also said she enjoyed hers and was particularly impressed with the cheese.<br/><br/>The wait-time for food was a little on the long side, however, the staff were apologetic and the food was definitely worth it. Forgivable given the cafe has been open less than a week.<br/><br/>I will certainly be returning!
Emma
The service was really slow and took almost an hour to get food. Food didn't come out at the same time for each person on our table. Once the meal came out it was cold, and coffee was cold.
