I enjoyed my takeaway meal from here. Sashimi was very fresh and tempura was delicious. I also ordered the beef yakinuki stir fry which was a bit average. But overall a decent meal and would order again.

If you love Japanese you will love this place. Their Bento boxes have a huge variety and you can taste the freshness. Service was fantastic and I love how quick the service is. Dipping sauces were just perfect, not too salty like they can be and fish was fresh and packed with flavour. This place deserves another visit soon.

Was craving Japanese food and discovered this spot on EatClub. It's not the best or most authentic Japanese food, but tastes good and is affordably priced (even without the discount). The thin yakisoba are well flavoured and not too oily and full of veg. The tofu don is a bit boring but at least it's clean and relatively light with nice, sweet onions and an egg on top, in the traditional fashion. The nasu dengaku is a great addition to these two dishes.

We keep coming back because each dish is so lovingly prepared and mouth wateringly good. A little dearer than a local competitor but worth it. A cut above.

I used to live in Japan, and I ate out everyday.

I was pleasantly surprised at how authentic the food was here. I ordered the sashimi platter, lobster roll and crab burger.

The sashimi was fresh and very good quality / portions considering the price.

The lobster roll was fantastic, especially good with the flamed salmon topping with Japanese mayonnaise.

The crab burger was the highlight, lightly battered and fresh with the perfect accompaniment of pickled vegetables and crispy bun.

My only regret is that I didn’t discover this place sooner.

Prices very reasonable.

The food feels almost inconsequential at the point of writing this review- it was decent; no real standouts. It was the unbelievably attentive service from the waitstaff who served us just overshadowed anything else that night. Granted, there wasn't many tables to wait on, but I don't believe I've seen anyone with such enthusiasm for their work. Ambience was nice too

The appearance from the exterior would suggest otherwise, but this quaint, family-run operation on Waverley Road packs a very strong punch.  Established in 2002 they have developed a strong reputation. Guests are packed in very tightly so this makes for quite a noisy experience, but the key here is to just talk louder than the other patrons.

Favourite Japanese for a special dinner. Food priced as expected for Japanese and restaurant fit out is okay, but nothing flash. Salmon skin rolls and deep fried flounder are personal favourites. All sushi and sashimi prepared by someone who knows what they're doing, so be prepared to wait a little for your servings if the place is full when you walk in. Service is good and drinks are affordable. Good variety of Japanese drinks available.

June 2019 update: Looks like this place has changed hands. We went for dinner recently and it was okay, but not the great place it used to be. Shame, means we have to find another special Japanese Restaurant...Oh well, it will be fun looking!

A hidden gem in the burbs. I've been frequenting Asakusa for a good 5 years and it's never disappointed. The head sushi chef is an amazing guy and his work is meticulous. The Unagi is outstanding, as is the selection of rolls (crispy salmon, spicy tuna, soft shell crab), and his karaage and sashimi platters will satisfy the fussiest of eaters.
Great restaurant.

I have frequented this local Japanese gem for at least 8 years and there is a reason I keep going back. The food here is excellent and authentic. The sushi is fresh; made fresh as soon as you order by the Japanese sushi chef in plain view in the corner. He always has a polite friendly smile.
The California rolls, the spicy tuna and salmon, the futomaki (pictured) will not disappoint.
Other great dishes are the tempura, the eggplant, the beef katsu don, agedashi tofu, udon noodles, really everything I have tried here is good.
My husband says the pork belly shogayaki is too small a serving for the price though.
The restaurant is small, discreet with Japanese ornaments and the service is good, I am pretty sure all staff are Japanese.
Worth a visit for sure, you will have a great Japanese experience.

Cute little restaurant. Doesn't look like much from the outside and was even a little surprised with how much we enjoyed our dining experience. We ordered some sake, sashimi, sushi hand rolls and tatsuta age to share. Being a small little restaurant, they only had a few wait staff.. but even they they did not have a lot of staff, our meals came out pretty promptly and our waitress was always attentive when needed. Very happy with the overall dining experience and the food was outstanding. Tatsuta age was delicious..Will gladly dine again.

I have never left this place disappointed! I came back for my birthday after I was taken here by my friends originally. The decor is average and you would not expect the exquisite tastes of Japan to come from a place that looks so average from the outside! Pretty much everything is good to eat from here. I love that they give edamames here (yummy!)

This is my friends favourite local Japanese. I've been here twice now with them and have enjoyed thoroughly both times. Every dish we had here last night was really tasty. Service was friendly, polite and efficient too, particularly from Zoe. Fantastic. Love it.

Ive eaten at many japenese restaurants. This one is the best ive had in Australia. Steve the resident chef is articulate and accurate. His work is off a high itamae and sushi standard. I recommend this place and salmon skin roll as my favourite dish

They got variety of selections of hot dishes and sushi sashimi, the hot pot called Shabushabu is quite nice to have with two people with rice in combination, asian people's lover.
But Cold dishes like Zara Soba - Cold noodles maybe just for hot summer.

Hidden gem. I don't usually write reviews but this place really deserves a good one . I almost don't want too many people to know about it . My partner and myself go there regularly for Sushi. I can't say we have tried any other dish except the Miso Eggplant as a side dish.
We love it so much we don't ever want to order anything else . It's delicious and so fresh & service is great!

Friends recommended this place as they've dined here many times before and know the owner Steven. Luckily we reserved a table as it was so busy at this hidden gem on a Saturday night. Steven who's running the restaurant also worked as a sushi chef designed our dishes and we left him to make whatever

Love it!. We've been going to Asakusa for at least 10 years and have always enjoyed it. The sushi chef is jovial and efficient - and we don't care if he's Chinese and not Japanese; what he produces is fabulous. We can't believe what some reviews have been said about it not being fresh; we've always found it melt-in-the mouth fresh. The tempura is excellent; light and not oily. The eggplant and the eel are great too. The ice-creams are to die for. It's our favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne! We love the family-run atmosphere and like that it isn't a big glamorous place! if the daughter (we think) sometimes didn't want to be there as a waitress, what 16 y.o would? It was all part of the fun. Try it!

8/10. I went here with a friend when visiting Sydney and we really enjoyed our meals. Would have like bigger portions but we walked away happy. I've had better Japanese but this was in no way bad. Had a good atmosphere and was buzzing with life on a Friday night.

Consistent. I've been going to Asakusa for years, my folk are there probably once a week. The salmon skin rolls are probably one of the best things you'll eat. Seriously, try them. Other highlights are gyoza, agedashi tofu, sesame spinach, and the sushi and sashimi platters.

Service does vary, depending on who serves you. Lucy is lovely and very helpful and warm.

A regular haunt. Having been a customer for many years we read with interest other reviews on Asakusa, in particular the "back room" where one diner thought they had been banished. When we have a group booking we often ask to be put in this back room as it is quiet and you get a "private room" without the cost of one. The food is consistently good, fresh and arrives in a timely fashion. They take note of food allergies and never once has an order been taken incorrectly. We love Asakusa and so does everyone we have ever taken there

Fantastic Sushi and Sashimi. Have been a regular since it opened. Staff are friendly and the fresh Sushi and Sashimi is some of the best in Melbourne. I strongly suggest making a booking and not just showing up on the door, as it's always busy.

Consistently some of the best Japanese food I've come across in Melbourne, have been a regular for 7 years. My advice, the Sushi, Sashimi and Smaller dishes are best, the mains aren't as interesting. The service is great and the sushi chef is an absolute pro, make sure you watch him preparing the sushi, it's unbelievable. Don't be fooled by the quaint exterior, this is one of Melbourne's best.

Surprisingly Good. We were quickly seated in a small back room which was a little warm and humid even with the aircon going. The four of us shared a large sushi and sushimi platter where the fish was melt in your mouth delicious. Other entrees followed and I had the gyoza which was superb and worth waiting for. My wife had fried eggplant with miso paste which she also enjoyed.
For mains we shared a chicken teriyaki which was moist and juicy with a delicate teriyaki flavour. This was followed by sukiyaki which was prepared at the table and served with a bowl of raw egg. The waitress gave a good explanation of how you were supposed to eat it which included adding some of the sauce to the egg to help cook the egg. This dish was the highlight of the night. The meat was tender and the sauce was absolutely delicious. I could've had another serving, but then my wife would call me a pig. Better to exercise some self control!
Overall really good food served unpretentiously and alot better than some other more expensive Japanese restaraunts that I've tried. Highly recommended.

Sushi is always excellent. We tend to stick to smaller dishes as there are so many ones we have enjoyed such as the spinach and black sesame seed salad, whiting tempura, ebi tam maki but our Jake can't go without his Katsu curry.

Yum!. We were seated quickly (since we had phoned up earlier and made a booking), and were shuffled through the front of the restaurant to a smaller room where there were a few other diners. We were promptly given menus and began trawling through the menu to find out what we should dine on.

Gyoza: They were so fresh, we practically inhaled them and were immediately wanting more. I could eat Gyoza all night every night if I had my way!

Gyu Tataki: So, so, so delicious! It had an almost prosciutto like flavour to it with the smokiness, and it didn't feel like you were eating raw meat at all. This was probably our second favorite dish after the gyoza.

Ramen: The chef himself brought this out. He was lovely, warning us the bowl was hot and not to touch it. The noodles and broth were very tasty in the miso soup. A nice staple meal to be had in winter.

We left feeling full but not bloated, which we always love when we eat Japanese. We don't feel the need to go for a long walk after dinner to start the digestion process.

The staff were very friendly, service was a little slow but understandable due to the amount of diners in. Not really somewhere that I would say I must go back to but I would without any hesitation.

Been here a few times with my family and we always love it. Feels very traditional, and has not changed much since when I went with my grandparents when I was much younger. Staff are always so respectful and nice and due to its smaller size you seating will feel very intimate which I really like. Good prices for what you’re getting and an array of options on the menu, both food and drinks.

We had a very enjoyable meal at Asakusa. Attentive staff in a warm and inviting space. So many standout dishes it's difficult to pick a favourite but the sushi & sashimi platter was particularly delicious and eye-catching. It must be said, the menu is a little overwhelming but the specials were affordable and helped guide our choices. We look forward to returning!

New owners/chef Jerry doing a great job improving this long, established Japanese restaurant. It's my local and I come here 3 or 4 times each month. Little by little improvements are being made. Decor, crockery, signage, general cleanliness etc. Service is great, very friendly and efficient by Alex, shandy and the others. Food is outstanding, especially Shashimi which is always very fresh and beautifully presented. Traditional dishes like sushi, agadashi tofu, tempura are all very good and supplimented by Jerry's imaginative specials. Keep improving Asakusa. We will keep coming to enjoy the experience.
