When I booked Miki’s Open Kitchen, I didn’t really know what to expect as I hadn’t heard anything about it before. I assumed that it might be a Japanese Teppenyaki bar, or something similar. The restaurant do two evening sittings, and we were booked into the 8:30 sitting. Beforehand we let them know our dietary requirements (no meat, no dairy), which they were happy to accommodate.
We chose “Miki’s Complete” and the food was fabulous. It was not traditional Japanese but good arranged in Australian way. However, it was a bit noisy and we couldn’t hear the explanation from staffs at all. Also waited for long time for each dish. Many staffs were there and the menu consisted of only couses, so we believe they can improve their operations more...
Brought us back to Japan. Service and food top notch as u would get in Japan. Each dish was done with definition, creativeness and well balanced, loved the persimmon with wasabi yogurt, cod and also scotch fillet. If in the region it is definitely a must visit. Seriously best place we visited in Margaret. The only thing to improve on is the lightness of the tempura. Would like for the next time to see the oilinesss completely eliminated. That being said, still a not to be missed place in margs.
Loved it. Went there randomly and got a table straight away. Service was great, staff were lovely and accommodating as we had a pram. Food was great portions were very tiny for the amount you were paying.
Great for special occasion, or those who wants to splurge. Definitely not cheap. But if you want a good Japanese degustation experience, give this one a go. In the end it was around $95 per person for us. Not sure if we want to go back again, but very memorable.
Been here 4 times and never disappoints! Had Miki’s Trust which had so much variety! Looks like there’s now an option to try a little of everything on the menu with Miki’s Complete; had we not had such a large lunch, that would have been the goer!
Looking forward to our next visit! Front row seats at the bar really added to the experience :)
Really enjoyed our experience at Miki’s Open Kitchen! You get to enjoy the courses whilst watching them prepare for the next! The flavours were on point, along with presentation and detail. Very impressed and service was good.
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!

I came here with my partner who is quiet a fussy eater. I will definitely come here again next time but I’ll go alone or with someone who has no limitations.
We walked in it was 7.30 seating. It was busy inside quiet a small cozy restaurant... I asked the waiter if we could just choose mains but he said not really its best to do it as set menu. Which was fine for me however my partner half way through decided to pull the pin 😬
After the waiter explained to me I didn’t want to cancel the last two dishes we where quiet full and my gf with no filter said can we just pay for what we have eaten? I looked at her quiet shocked and said no I’m happy to pay for the set menu because that’s what we agreed before starting our eating. Anyway....
The food here is amazing I asked for one vegetarian tasting menu and one non vegetarian.
The first round came out I’m not sure what the where but I’ll able on each photo what was 1st, 2nd and 3rd
The food was amazing and I highly recommend it!!!! I’ll go back again to experience it again properly
After hearing about this place from a lot of locals, we really had to come and try it. It’s a small dining room set around a central kitchen. Very Japanese.
Decided on the chefs tasting menu. An awesome choice. Such a great dining experience and would recommend this place to everyone.
We tried this place tonight and opted for the Miki’s Trust degustation menu and were not disappointed. The menu changes but you can rest assured all the dishes will be unique and taste amazing. We sat at chef’s station so could watch the food being prepared, the chefs and waitresses were all lovely as was the service. The food blew us away you must try if you are ever in the area but remember you must make a booking in advance.
More like dinner and a show when you sit at bar facing into the kitchen, food and service flawless. Best place to get food in Margaret River.
A cozy open kitchen styled restaurant that is hidden in one of the smaller alleyways, the restaurant had a finesse sort of atmosphere to it. Waitresses were all extremely helpful and informative, carefully describing each creation Miki had fused together. The food had a very unique and distinctive flavour to them. A full course meal with small portions had us tasting a large variety of dishes.
A definite must visit for fine diners!
One of our must visit restaurants whenever we are down south. We only ever have the degustation menu and we've never been disappointed. The friendly service is always a bonus.
Our night at Miki's started shabbily. The front of house staff ignored us and everyone who was walking in. He was sorting out the bills of customers leaving but gave us zero acknowledgement and worked doubly hard to avoid eye contact. When we alerted him to our presence as the entrance was beginning to resemble a sardine tin, it was a curt, "I am currently serving these people. You will have to wait.". We very nearly walked out and order pizza from next door if it wasn't for the waitress who appeared seconds after to sort out seating arrangements, welcome customers and seat them.
We decided on Miki's Trust, a six course degustation paired with sake. There is also the option of pairing with wine but when in Rome, do as the Romans do. It was a relaxed atmosphere after we were seated. We did also bring up our experience upon arriving and the staff member was instructed to cease any further interaction with us which was a relief to us and a sign that customer service is a priority.
We couldn't fault the food. Temperature controlled tempura frying was fascinating to observe and the results were sublime. The vegetables were still crisp asnd fresh while surrounded in a light fried batter. I could taste the flavour of each vegetable separately.
We ordered all three main options. This was for an additional $7 so why not. The gold band snapper was tender and moist as soon as I bit through the fried batter. The pork belly was umami filled goodness. Lamb isn't a meat that the Japanese cook but Miki nailed it with is Japanese black beer braised lamb. The broth was packed full of flavours from Brazil. The rice with kimchi in broth is now my new comfort food. The broth was simmering in a claypot on the stove before we had even arrived. Dessert was a rich chocolate and chilli mousse with a caramelised sugar crust. It was a delightful way to end the meal.
The sake pairing worked fabulously. We tasted citrus notes through to bold rice flavours and I found myself enjoying a hot sake with the mains. I normally favour cold sake. For dessert it was a mix of ume wine and sake which complemented the richness of chocolate.
Would definitely visit again.
We originally came here because we love Japanese food, and Japan more generally. We've been here about five times now and try to book in every time we go down south. Both of our parents have been here now and they were all really impressed too.
We were so pleased that Miki's food combines traditional japanese ingredients and methods with locally sourced produce. We have talked to Miki himself, and as well as being a lovely man, it is clear that he uses high quality traditional Japanese ingredients. His restaurant is typically Japanese in that it is small and has an open kitchen, which is great to watch.
His food is reasonably priced given it's wonderful quality. We recommend trusting Miki and trying his menu! No matter what the season, the produce he sources always tastes great. The beef cheek is my favourite, as is the tempura.
We hope to be back soon, and hope other people keep going to keep Miki in Margaret River!
We dined at Miki's based on the positive reviews we had read online. It lived up to our expectations. It's a bit pretentious/showy but we ignored that and focussed on the food and drink. The booking process was very efficient and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We chose Miki's trust menu with wines and upgraded to the large main. Each dish was well presented and very tasty - and was matched with good quality wines. The waiting staff explained each dish although not everything was understood as there were a few staff with what appeared to be strong Irish accents. But the staff were patient when we asked questions about the food and wine. One course was slow in arriving and the waiting staff explained and gave us a complimentary glass of wine. Watching the cooking staff in the open kitchen was interesting - particularly seeing the smooth recovery from a dropped completed dish! The whole dining experience was very interesting but probably aimed at tourists like us - I don't think I would go regularly if I was a local.
What a fantastic start to a long weekend. Leaving Perth this morning I never thought I would be sitting in one of the most authentic Japanese experiences in WA. The food was a work of art, and it seems like I ate just enough to feel satisfied. Come here if you are looking for a unique experience and not if your starving and prefer pub style servings. I loved it and will definitely return on my next trip to Margaret River.
I'll be honest I'm a big searcher on this site and I have in my time felt j should comment on restaurants which I haven't done a lot, but tonight I felt the need to do so!
Miki's kitchen was what you want, a culinary delight!
The food and wine matches were on point, especially the dessert, which I normally skip.
Would happily recommend this place to anyone and I will probably try and go again tomorrow!!!
This was the highlight of my trip to Margaret River. Extraordinary, delicious, unusual Japanese food. I had the set menu which was great value, but order the main course size if you are hungry. This is clever, adventurous food prepared by someone who is a talent. Friendly unobtrusive service. Highly recommended.
One of the highlights of my trip. It's a gorgeous little restaurant with amazing food and friendly staff. Need to book early to get in. We chose a degustation menu and were not left disappointed, especially considering what you get for the price.
Finally got to have dinner here on second attempt at booking! My friend and I chose to do the Tempura Trust, which is a degustation type menu.
The menu was 7 courses and this particular one had only been out for two days! We each ordered a glass of wine. All of the food was so fresh and local. A few, like the tempura salmon maki in dashi, the tuna with avocado and tempura scallop were standouts for us. We liked the food so much we ordered additional desserts! So glad we did because unfortunately we did not enjoy the dessert that came with the degustation as much as the other dishes (it was peach 'soup' with white chocolate and rosemary).
Overall a must visit if you like Japanese food and are coming to Margaret River. Staff were very friendly and the open kitchen truly fascinating. Will be back for sure.
I have paid my visit to this restaurant three times so far. The chief has never disappointed me. The ingredients used are fresh and tempura cooked to perfection.
I drove down 3 hours for the dinner again yesterday, the food was fantastic. My only recommendation for the restaurant it to give us a spoon in the main dish. The source , tempura fish and rice mingled really well together. However, my neighbor tables and I we could not reach to the bottom of the soup with a pair of chopstick.
This place had to be the highlight of our trip down to Margaret River! We had the Trust the Chef degustation and it was sensational! We were lucky enough to be seated along the cooking area so we got to see the chefs in action! It's a must do when in the region! Can't wait to come back
Well executed, intelligent, seasonal and well thought out bites. Make a booking well in advance as this small restaurant gives a huge original impact to the local food scene.
Small but nice enough venue. The locals rave about this place and whilst the food is presented well it just misses the mark. Perhaps there are flashes of brilliance but when we visited it was all just nice enough.
In a wine region filled with many degustation-oriented restaurants, Miki's Open Kitchen stands out as one of the best value multi-course meals in the area, and an excellent Japanese restaurant in its own right. The $60 Trust Menu is filled with skillfully cooked dishes made from well sourced seafood from around Australia, with their Tempura being particularly impressive and inventive. The Open Kitchen layout also provided us with an interesting insight into the working process of the restaurant, with three chefs working all the stations in synchronised perfection and aided by high quality front of house staff. With its central location, Miki's is an essential dining experience while staying in Margaret River, and joins Italian restaurant La Scarpetta as one of our favourites on the main strip.
Really good Restsurant. Nice ambience. Good value for money. Food, presentation and service is excellent. All the dishes we ordered had fabulous flavors and textures. The barramundi was outstanding as was the 5 hour beef. Such depth of flavor yet delicate.
Tempura bliss unlike any/many others in Australia. A little gem in WA and Margaret River particularly. The open kitchen also adds to the appreciation levels and drama.
Managed to get a booking after a late cancellation, well worth it! We ordered the degustation and I had the vegan option along with servings of sake. The food was amazing and the chefs were so thoughtful. Service and ambience was amazing. Can't wait to come back.

Every mouthful is a blast. The fusion of local produce is measured and the service has that same balance..I've been many times and will continue to keep going back..
At first we were kind of worried about coming here, because we don't want to eat fried food (i.e. tempura) all night long. We were proven wrong. It was a delightful experience that we will fondly remember. We ordered from the chef's menu on the board and watched as our food was being cooked one by one to perfection in the open kitchen (we happened to be sitting at the bar).
Everything was awesome, delicious and innovative; it was a party of flavors and texture, a feast to the palate and eye. Miki's and his partners worked so seamlessly together, it was almost like a two-piece orchestra if such thing exists. Food upon food was delivered in a timely manner that there was no long idle moments. All went well with a cold bottle of Sapporo beer...
We will definitely come back if we ever in Margaret River again.
Make sure you book in advance and the place is small and only accommodate 2 sittings per night.
We dined here while visiting from Melbourne, the whole experience was delightful! The food at Miki's was easily the best Japanese i had ever eaten and the service was really good. I only wish WA wasn't so far away, I would love to be a frequent customer here.
Hontoni oishii!
Haven't had such good Japanese food in WA for a long time. All the dishes were fresh, crisp and reminded me so much of food in Japan. Staff were polite and well mannered. They started the meal with a hot towel to freshen us up before taking orders - which was fantastic as we had driven the whole day prior.
Would definitely recommend going for the selective set option for your first time!
Great experience. I agree with all the reviews that have been written before. Experience and enjoy, but make sure you book in advance. Miki's is small but mighty.
Delicious Japanese. We had the banquet style menu, for 2 people. Amazing food, every morsel was delicate and delicious.
Fabulous service, intimate dining space, friendly chefs!
I can't wait to return, outstanding.
Wow! One of the best meals I've had in a while. Perfect produce and presentation. Lovely happy staff. Could fault the place. Can't wait to go back
Dinner and a Show. We recently visited Margaret River and prior to arriving read some great reviews regarding Miki's. Our experience did not disappoint. The food was of a very high standard, the service friendly and efficient and Miki took centre stage as the larger-than-life rock star of this small but sensational little restaurant in Margaret River.
If you're going to M/R, do not miss out on this one! Book ahead.
Excellent. Our wonderful experience commenced with the gracious and polite lady who took our booking, I had booked weeks ahead so we had front row seats to watch the kitchen masterminds in action. We ordered the tempura degustation. The whole experience was visually awesome and the food was superbly presented and totally delicious. We felt, from the moment we were seated, that the night would be a very special occasion. The staff were great, the chefs so quick, so clean and so clever. The plating was just beautiful. The wine choices were outstanding and priced reasonably. We look forward to our next opportunity to dine at Mikis.
Numerous people recommended Miki's, and we weren't disappointed! We were lucky enough to get a booking on a Saturday night on one if the tables (not around the kitchen), but we were still able to watch the chefs in action. More importantly, the food was amazing, everything we ordered was delicious and super fresh, and had so much individual flavour in each dish, the paper wrapped barramundi being a highlight. The service was very friendly and fast ( but not as if they were rushing you out), making it a great dining experience. We would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!!
Fantastic Japanese restaurant. Had the degustation menu on the weekend and requested seats around the counter. Had a fantastic experience sitting in the cosy restaurant watching the chefs prepare our meals. All of the dishes were delicious and it was so fun watching how pleasant the chefs were - the meals matched the food that comes out of Japan. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! A wonderful addition to the restaurants in the Margaret River region.
Awesome food and great lay out. Food was unbelievable! had 5 smallish shared dishes for two hungry young people and that was more than enough. The taste of each dish was beautiful, from the fresh tuna to the succulent duck. The restaurant is centred around the kitchen so you get to see all the action which was very enjoyable. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area or travelling to Margaret River.
Thnx Miki
Great Japanese Tempura restaurant in Margs. I went to Miki's Open Kitchen on a recommendation of a friend - and I was not disappointed. I spent four years living in Japan and frequently travel back there on holidays - so you can believe me when I say that Miki serves up great Japanese food.
I'm usually left disappointed when going to "Japanese" restaurants in WA because the food that is served isn't authentic. Most of the time you will find the "Japanese" restaurants owned and operated by Chinese and Koreans who dont recreate authentic Japanese cuisine (don't get me wrong - I love both Korean and Chinese food).
It was a great treat to go to Miki's Open Kitchen. Walking through the door I got the feeling like I was back in Tokyo. I was ushered to my seat which was in front of the open kitchen where I was able to witness Miki and his other chefs cooking. Miki uses traditional methods to cook - for the tempura dishes Miki uses a traditional Japanese copper cooking pot instead of a big industrial deep fryer - which makes a big difference to taste.
The food preparation and cooking is all done in plain site in a very clean environment.
The food was fresh and each dish left me wanting more.
The service was what you would expect from a real Japanese restaurant - the waitress were attentive and friendly.
Miki Open Kitchen is a fantastic example of Japanese food done well.
I will heading back to Margaret River over the New Years period and I will defiantly be making a booking to visit Miki's Open Kitchen again.
料理長においしかったとお伝え下さい。 - My compliments to the chef
Exceptionally good. If you like Japanese food then Miki's is a must. We had the $55 degustation menu, everything was delicious. Tried two of the sake options, the ginjou and daiginjou, both very good. Cool place too, we sat around the centre kitchen, watching the chefs do their stuff. Deserves the 90%+ rating.
I arrived about 7:30pm midweek and this place was full of patrons. The polite lady who greeted me luckily found me a spot. I had a 'small item' that I can't recall the name of, and also the swordfish mains. Absolutely delicious!!! Both meals were made to perfection - everything from the cooking, the texture, the freshness, and the presentation. I will be going here again!
Had to see what the fuss was all about. Went down to Margaret river for a few days and checking out places to eat before we went. Found this on Urbanspoon and decided to book for Thursday night. It was a bit last and was put on a waiting list. Decided to book Friday instead at 8.30 all good and locked in. We went and ordered the set menu for $55 6 courses. we were originally sat on a table. But a free spot opened up to sit in front of the chef and watch Miki and his crew in action. The set menu is a must try all I remember is the yellow fin tuna the rest well I didn't jot down the names. If this was in Perth it would be a big hit its just awesome. Taste, presentation was spot on loved it. Will book again and well in advance if I'm heading down to Margaret River again. Highly recommended must try
Amazing Dinner. Well what do i say? loved it, Do what we did and get yourself a counter table so you can watch the chefs cook right in front of you so if you have a hot date it'll make for great entertainment. We got the set menu called Miki's Tempura, which contains 6 Dishes (4 Entree 1 Main 1 Desert). As expected with Japanese its all fish orientated. Every dish was exciting and had a little something would surprise you. Waitress's were quick and easy going and was fun chatting to the chefs while they cooked. Its not a big place so make sure you book. Very well priced and BYO. Do yourself a favour and get amongst it.
131 Bussell, at the back, off the road, but not on a Monday or a Tuesday, and only if you have a booking. . . It's wise to be prepared; the food is delicate and beautiful, the room off white, with a sunken kitchen in the centre. The only minor fault - the heavy scent of cooking oil as you enter, which is not entirely unexpected given the focus on tempura. Miki smiles and chats, marshalling his team and pouring beer for the patrons while slicing and preparing his little plates, each one complete and gorgeous. The room is small and the seats are all taken. The common choice is the trust menu, a set price and a cascade of morsels. We had a predetermined departure time and ate off the menu (the trust takes about 2 hours), everything was as it should have been - simple, clean and pure. The pickle with humble ingredients, each transformed into something better; the duck breast moist and delicate; the paper tofu comforting; the sashimi (tuna) exceptionally fresh. Image: not a sushi roll in si
Great alternative for a different dinning experience. Must like Japanese style food. Go for the full menu experience, a lot of small bites and pieces. Totally worth the price. The only thing I will pass on is the pairing. Definitely more worth it in places like Voyager or Cape Lodge. Most of the food is WA local!
If only I could give Miki's more than 5 stars. It deserves it. We finally made it here, along many other eager diners. And I'll bet no one left disappointed.
The food was truly amazing. The flavours blow your socks off. The presentation will blow your mind. And sat around the open kitchen is an experience in itself. Watching the team work together with such efficiency. Lost for words.
We had the Miki's Complete. Why would you have anything else? I recommend you do the same. What are you waiting for?
A thoughtful place. Simple white and black decor means the food is a colourful contrast. Small bites of loveliness with some delicious sake to match.
Make sure you book in advance for this wonderful experience! Wonderful local produce cooked right in front of you with Japanese flavours and style. We chose the saki pairing, however our neighbours recommend the wine pairing just as much. We enjoyed 8 courses with a total of 22 different dishes over 2 hours. From the service, to the cooking and the food, it really made an experience not to be missed and cannot wait to do it again!
The venue was stunning, staff friendly and trained beautifully in the dishes. The open kitchen was immaculate and the chefs were amazing to watch. I enjoyed (I think) the complete tasting with the sake pairing. Sooooooooooo many amazing pairings of flavours!
Nice to sit around the open kitchen. Food is well done and it’s fusion done well. The $67 menu is just nice for a small-medium eater. Good proportion of deep fried foods, seafood was fresh. Very quick service which I very much appreciate.
We had the most amazing time here. The food was absolutely incredible, truly unforgettable food that made me so giddy with joy every time another plate came out. We did the complete course and it is SO SO worth it. The staff were very friendly and I found it enthralling watching the food get prepared while we were eating. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who has a love for fine dining and Japanese cuisine. We love you, Miki's!!!! ❤️🔥
If I could give this 6+ stars, I would! My partner and I were firstly amazed at the atmosphere of this place. Small and intimate, but big enough to create noise amongst chatty tables. Good vibes coming from the kitchen - it was fantastic to see. The staff were also very friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive.
The food was an otherworldly experience. We had the 'Miki's Complete', and we would do it all again. Every single bite was an absolute treat - flavors we had NEVER experienced before and all completed each other. The sake cocktails were also
We cannot wait to be back down south to experience Miki's Open Kitchen again!
