Review Phd - Marrickville

Lorenzo Nevin
I was recommended this by a friend who said their salt and pepper tofu was the best he'd ever tried. I was not disappointed. Silken tofu encased by thick, uneven batter that allowed for texture variation along with the use of the fried and fresh shallots made it a perfect dish. The chow mein stir fries were also excellent. The veggies done to textural perfection. I was a bit disappointed with the price points. The mains were all over $20 and the fresh rice paper rolls whilst nice were certainly not $15 nice! Still, I'll be coming back here. The service was great.

Tasty, reasonably priced dishes with simple interiors and friendly staff. For someone like me who doesn’t really eat that much Vietnamese food, this place is a good start. I tried their Crispy Pancake, Vermicelli Noodles with Lemongrass pork with spring rolls and Boneless Stuffed Chicken wings. I love the flavours and will definitely go back.

Very tasty food with generous serving sizes. The caramelised pork was super juicy cooked in a delicious, umami sauce. The next highlight was a deep fried eggplant dish which was delightful and super juicy - a crispy coating that will please carnivores and vegans alike. We had chicken rice paper rolls to start (standard fare) and also had diced pepper beef (tasty but not wow) and chicken fried rice. Overall a good meal. BYO - it came to about $130 for 2 people.

I ordered via doordash. I had the following: Egg noodle and crispy chicken - so so good! Texture and flavours are on point. Green papaya salad - although it has prawn and pork, I think something's missing in terms of the taste and flavour. Steam rice with pork combination and frieg egg - yummy! Totally satisfied. I will definitely order here again and again and again. 😉😋

Very disapointing. I was hoping for fresh crisp Vietnamese cuisine. Every single thing we ordered was very greasy, soggy, too sweet and over cooked. It tasted like it was made with poor quality ingredients and cheap oil. I will definitely not order here again.

Really good beef pho and vermicelli salad! The broth is really nice for the pho. It's a pretty small portion compared to other pho restaurants that I have visited, so if you want the normal pho size, then order a large (or an xl if you're a big eater!) I thought it was a good size to share a side dish! The vermicelli salad had beef and spring rolls, really flavourful and a light dish in my opinion! Good portion! They serve really quick which is a big plus!

Pho PHD gets busy during dinner service most nights and to be honest I can't understand why. The beef in the Pho is overcooked. The overall quality of the food can feel a little lacklustre at times. And I always feel as though I've overpaid when it comes time to pay the bill. The service can also be a little hit and miss. The path to the toilet is also quite a cause for concern.

By far, one the best Pho's that I have ever eaten in Sydney. I order by Uber Eats most of the time because I don't live close by Pho Phd but gosh, it is worth spending a few dollars extra to get delivered an amazing dish that will give you energy and bring you back to life when you are feeling tired, sick, hangover, etc. I would totally recommend eating here.

Did not enjoy the special beef pho here. Meat was not served medium rare as described and the soup base was not the best. On top of that the waiting time was quite long for a bowl of pho.
Ned
Not a fan of sweet or greasy foods and their pho is both. Not your standard pho, overly sweetened and visibly a thick layer of oil on top. Feel like this is way overrated. Sugar substitutes true flavour in the same way MSG does. Some people may prefer this taste but objectively this is an inferior product.
Sunshine
Great tasty pho, reasonably priced. The soup base was delicious but a little on the sweet side. Meat could’ve been more generous. Overall good meal.

My parents are visiting from overseas and wanted pho Vietnamese pancakes, so after doing some quick research we decided to check this place out for lunch.

Even though they didn’t have our booking, the restaurant wasn’t busy so we were quickly seated. The staff who looked after us was very friendly and all smiles. We decided to share their pork and prawn pancakes which came out so crispy and we were all fighting for it. One of the better ones I have tried in Sydney. My son tried their tomato rice with an egg on top which he loved. My husband tried their vermicelli noodles combination (not bad) but wanted to swap with my pho half way as he decided he actually felt like pho. I didn’t mind as the large bowl of pho was so big there was no way I could eat all of it anyway. Fragment broth and not too salty. I wonder how big the X-large bowls would be and that could easily be for 2-3 people.

Great that we tried this restaurant as their banh Xero was delicious!
Alana
Very bad service. We watched people who arrive after us receive their food and leave. After we were finally able to get the attention of the waiter they nonchalantly told us they’d forgotten about our order. No apology. Extremely unimpressed.

This Pho is authentic but too much MSG, and the broth is a little too fatty. The restaurant although owned by a Vietnamese owner, the menu is a mix of Chinese stir fry food and Vietnamese dishes. Rated as one of the best Pho in Sydney but I feel that it was overrated. However service was fast enough and food came out very quick. If you like cheap, good Pho then yes PHD will be just good enough, but don’t expect fireworks in their food.
Xlittlecupcake
This place is phoking great - definitely order the pho and the pork spring rolls :) one of the best bowls of pho I’ve tried in Sydney, will definitely be back during these cold winter days

Had the raw beef pho, combination vermincilli and crispy chicken.

Beef pho- soup was rich but very sweet. Beef was a bit rough and dry. After that I felt thirsty so I suspect they put MSG in it as that’s my reaction after meal if there was any MSG.

Crispy chicken was dry not moist inside too. I usually go to Flemington or Carbramatta for Vietnamese food and two of the shops there got much better crispy chicken.

The combination vermincili was dry and not that tasty either. Mr. Nam in Mascot does a far much better one.

Not a shop that I’ll miss to go back again.
It's the best pho in sydney. I drive 45 minutes each way to get here, it's worth it.

The broth is perfect, just the right blend of herbs and sweetness.

I get the combination pho (no brisket).

The decor is very plain, but they are no nonsense, it's all about the food here!

Street parking can be tough, but there is a public parking lot on the roof of the gym/fruit shop.

Hmmm not sure about this one at all. They really under-delivered after reading so many positive reviews here.
Ordered the vietnamese omelette with pork and prawns for entree. What I got was an omelette filled with bean sprouts and maybe 2 tiny pieces of pork and 2 tiny prawns! What?? Then they give us a side plate of more bean sprouts and mint with sauce. Strike 1.

I was really looking forward to the combination pho (again after all the great reviews). Again, very skimpy on meats and a hell of alot of noodles! The broth was fine but it was such a let down. And they bring out another side plate of more bean sprouts, mint and sauce. Was there a special when they bought their bean sprouts?

Won't be back.

I love this place for pho, it's a pleasant atmosphere and I can take my classy friends there that can not stand the hustle and bustle of the other Vietnamese places I got to, there's a mix of ethnicities so they generally say they don't feel like their the odd ones out... mind you I'm not Asian and I'm always at pho lol best soups ever

We went to PHD Vietnamese for lunch and ordered beef Pho, lemongrass chicken & rice and fried spring rolls with pork. I enjoyed my Pho. The regular size is plenty for me. This aromatic beef noodle soup is bursting with cloves & cinnamon flavour. It’s light, rich and a bit sweet but I don’t mind the sweetness of the soup at all. It’s pretty clean and cool inside of the restaurant.

The pho here was sensational!
Definitely seasoned with MSG (my mouth was drier than the Sahara), but was a really, really tasty bowl of pho. The servings are huge (a small size would be enough for most people) and the prices are very reasonable. Caution: don’t eat the chilli
Kirk Harris
Rubbish food, service was average, no lunch special and cash only. Go up the road to Hello Aunty if you want a decent feed. Not sure how it got such a good rating. We shared 4 dishes and no one from our party was satisfied.
ChrisNHuynh
Love the Pho here completely Northern style Pho a bit sour the others Pho just like Southern style but Pho was invented from the North and seasoning and taste of South and North is completely different. Moreover, they keep the consistency very well
Janey Elmgreen
Maybe the reviews swayed me but I enjoyed the pho here much more than the Pho PHD around the corner. Broth has the same flavour as it'll sure they use the same recipe, but it had a more intense flavour. I also ordered the brisket AND tofu and it was so good! The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft In the middle and I still had a decent amount of beef. Madame Nhu is my fav but this is a close close second
Leon
I wasn't exactly impressed with the food at PHD

I ordered pho and stuffed chicken and both were disappointing. The stuffed chicken was dry and tough whereas the pho tasted like it was loaded with MSG.

We were craving pho and didn't want to drive all the way out to Cabramatta... I had the seafood pho and was happily surprised about the selection of lovely vegetable added to it as well as the perfectly simmered prawns, fish, calamari in it! The broth was wonderful too. My husband had the beef pho and he said it was good. The only downfall for us would have to be the deep fried spring rolls they were really chewy? Like as if they had been wrapped too many times with the pastry to compensate for the lack of filling! We will definitely be back but won't be getting the spring rolls...

Edit: don't know what happened tonight but I was served the combination vermicelli bowl with raw pork not once but TWICE. No apology nothing. We walked out. Don't even bother with the drinks. Taste like dirty dishwater.

I'm always chasing an exceptional pho and the pho here was better than average but not the bomb! I did really enjoy their pork fresh rice paper rolls - i recommend!

We have been to this restaurant a few times. This time it was a cold winters night, perfect for pho. The service can be a bit hit and miss, but this time it was pretty good.
We had stuffed chicken wings to start. With a number of pho options available, they were also flexible allowing you to choose combinations that suit. I went with my usual, the beef pho. I chose to go with rare beef, brisket and beef ball this time. On the side there was a mountain of mint and bean sprouts, also chilli and lemon wedges. I went the large serve, it was HUGE. Although a little greasy, the soup had great flavour.
My wife ordered a small portion of chicken vermacelli soup, which was a decent portion. The soup had nice flavour, but the chicken wasn't the best quality.
A great Viet restaurant, worth stopping by.

Amazing every time.
Visit this place a lot and brevet disappointed. The staff are great, the location is clean, food is amazing!
Giant bowls of nourishing, delicious, warn pho - we've tried their special rare beef pho and also the combination. Both are beyond amazing!
Their pork chop with tomato rice is delicious, and last time we visited we had the moneybags as an entree which were so good!
The best pho in sydney!!! Mr Zonks
HurryDaFoodup
A variety of dishes to choose from. The food is great and service is nice and quick as well!
Would definitely recommend and go back for my Vietnamese cravings!

Been meaning to try this Vietnamese place for ages and it was definitely worth the wait! The food here is sensational! We got the prawn rice paper rolls, boneless stuffed chicken wings and pork chops with tomato rice. There's so much flavor in the meat and their sauces are highly addictive and complements the meal well! Service is top notch it's just a bit pricey!

With the reviews and line of people outside the restaurant, I could hardly contain my excitement to finally dig into a hot bowl of delicious pho. My high expectations soon failed me as soon as we were seated. The table had been wiped as we sat down, left with the greasy residue of previous customers. After we had ordered, full of hope the food would be much better than the service, 2 cups and a water jug was left on the table. The cups, upon inspection were full of dirt and grim so water wasn't our beverage choice for lunch. When the pho finally came out, it wasn't piping hot, the rice noodles were old and hard as they floated in the broth. The rare beef was also not fresh, with parts of it being black. And there was only 2 small pieces of beef balls and tripe considering the large bowl was ordered. An overall very disappointing experience contrary to the fantastic reviews I had read about prior. Will definitely not be coming back.
Alan King Bowden
Decent Vietnamese food with a large menu having many options. The pho comes in generous sizes, the meat was average and the broth a little salty. Good pho is tough to come me across in Sydney and I would say this place is one of the better places I have been. The vermicelli looked very good.
Abel Crawford
Disgusting glossy sugary tasteless food. Should've guessed that this place was gonna be a disappointment from the 100+ menu items... First the coconut water was full of ice and way too sweet from added sugar. Then our order chicken with lemongrass and chilli came out in 2 min obviously it was precooked. No hint of lemon grass, just bulk sickly sweet brown thickner enriched sauce. Left after eating a couple of snow peas in the dish, told the restaurant how disappointed we were, sorry we cannot give you a refund.. Marrickville, known for its Vietnamese food, well I would hate to think this place is representative

I actually like the slightly sweeter broth served here, though my Vietnamese companions weren't so sure. Multiple flavours in one soup - sweet, sour, bitter, tangy - and the beef and noodles were wonderfully tender
Let's Nomnom
Pho is always be our comfort food be it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even supper (if any is still open) the broth is more to the sweet side and a bit greasy but still flavourful. Tried their freshly rolled rice paper roll and had the shredded pork and bbq pork filling. Chewy skin with the right proportion of meat, vermicelli and the veggies - their bbq pork filling is definitely my fave!

•Best pho I have had in the inner city area
•Good proportions and seasoned that doesn't leave you thirsty afterwards
•Number 11 (new menu) - Vietnamese style crepe/ pancake
•Number 13 - pho with rare beef
•Number 14 - pho with rare beef combo
•Plant milk tea - presented well like the name suggests and also tastes great
•Gets busy so make sure you arrive early
•Minimal parking available on the street I normally park behind on Francis street
Satch Vitz
Food was tasty but rating has been undermined by basic things. Firstly, three separate orders were brought out at very different times (one diner was finished by the third persons food arriving). Also, the owner who runs the floor tried to get the three of us, plus baby, to sit at a two person table- which was impossible.

In our ongoing quest to find a good plate of pork chop rice in Sydney, we came across PHD as the latest Vietnamese restaurant to try. The components are all there, but their pork chop and the omelette were actually DEEP FRIED, giving it a wonderful crispy edge and aroma. Not a bad find. Kudos to the waitress who didn't give me a hard time for bringing in a half eaten roll from Marrickville pork rolls up the road!

Time/queue: Sunday for lunch, no queue but almost full inside.
Atmosphere: family restaurant.
Staff/service: quite friendly, limited staff and quite busy most of the time, this will take time to take your order. Food come quite quick.
Food/drinks: Beef pho - 4/5. Vermicelli grilled pork - 4/5. All taste God and in reasonable portion.
Return back: definitely
La Petite Bobo
Definitely my favourite Vietnamese in the inner west! I always head to PhD for the vegetarian pho and am never disappointed. The broth is full of flavour despite being meat-free and is served in a huge portion! The value for money is always great, unlike most other Vietnamese restaurants closer to the city.

I had the beef com bination pho but it was just beef and 1 slice of beef ball and 2 thin pieces of tripe? How is this a combination but worse of all is the MSG in the pho. It tasted nice at the time but afterwards I was so thirsty from the msg - will not return.
Lanniepie
Very average Pho. Ordered a large bowl of rare beef pho.
I rarely feel compelled to leave good reviews but thought I should leave feedback on this one to tell it like it is.

Found it very average - broth super sweet from added sugar rather than from beef bone, bland and lacking depth . Too much noodles vs meat and broth ratio. Not the worst but not up there with the best either.
Lamb.sue.s
Not authentic Vietnamese. We ordered the beef combination pho and it was TERRIBLE. I'm vietnamese and I make better pho. The broth was made from beef stock, the meat and tripe was chewy. The only good thing was the fresh basil and bean sprouts. The satay chicken was THE worst. We paid $16 for over cooked chicken that we could not even force ourselves to eat. It took over an hour for the food to be delivered and it arrived cold!!! I'm very disappointed that this Resturant claims to be Vietnamese cuisine.

Really like it!. Had the Pho Tai. Fragrant and really beautiful broth. Love the sweetness, just the right amount. Large serving size (even for the regular bowl) with an enormous amount of noodles and good meat. The broth was standout for me and I've never tasted anything like it again. No MSG dry mouth aftertaste.
Soup is $11. Its worth it, try it! I wish you well on your Pho journey!

...People often ask where they can find the best pho in Marrickville and PHD is always on my list of recommendations. Some say it’s too sweet and I don’t disagree with them. It is a much more full flavoured broth which I find doesn’t need the addition of any extra sauces. Throw in some basil, bean shoots, chilli and a squeeze of lemon and you’re off. If you prefer your pho mild to start which builds as you add, then this may not be the one for you.
Padaek
... the herbal/aromatic broth was masterly balanced – rich and flavoursome but not overly salty, with distinctive notes of sweet aniseed flavour. Deep in the well, under the tower of blanched vegetables, fresh herbs (coriander, garlic chives, shallots, thinly sliced red onions), and crunchy fried onion flakes, laid a nest of firm, springy egg noodles, a handsome chocolate brown fatty duck thigh with tender meat that pulled easily off the bone, and drenched juicy shitake mushroom medallions full of intoxicating, intense earthy flavours.

A few of my friends have been singing the praises of PHD for a long time and I finally decided to go check out the restaurant myself. Yes, my low/no carb diet is hanging on for dear life but I’ve lost some weight so here’s my chance to put some back on. Quick tangent before I launch into my review. I have terrible fortune when it comes to parking near my destination. I always end up parking a street away or in some tucked away lane laden with graffiti and bird droppings. I managed to avoid getting spray paint and poop on my car today but that’s because I parked over a kilometer away from PHD. It’s like the Dietary Gods decided that I had to do some extra cardiovascular activity before I could enjoy my meal. What a meal it was. Located a brisk walk
Ilovemyfoodlots
Prices are decent and the portions are generous. The broth is full of flavour, packed with a whole heap of flavoursome herbs. A good place to go to if you're in the area as the food is authentically Vietnamese. They also serve dinner which I hopefully can try in the near future as the extensive menu offerings sound delicious.

Most cool suburbs have cafes, bars and restaurants that are so part of the local culture and traditions that they are considered institutions and phd - Sup’herb Pho in Marrickville is a great example. When I lived in Marrickville I was introduced to what was its previous incarnation of Pho Bac by my nieces and nephew, whose Friday night visits date back to when they were tiny. Since then it has a face lift and a name change but the great tasting honest food remains the same. So in a recent visit to Sydney for the Writers’Festival , I squeezed in a dinner out with the much loved Family at this old haunt. First we ordered Vietnamese Fresh Spring rolls which came out super fast and were well presented and tasted great. They were good that they disappeared almost instantly!! Next we ordered Vermicelli with Shredded Pork and Salad whose complex flavours were nice but not overpowering and the same goes for the Thai Style Braised Noodles. We were tossing up whether to order the fried rice
Fashimi
So what should you order? Tough question. I mean, of course you should try to pho (number 14), it tastes so fresh and is full of spicy flavour but the vermicelli (number 50) with shredded pork, spring rolls and grilled pork is damn good too. My guess is that you can’t really go too wrong here, so go nuts.
Ballareat
The Pho eaten by my friends was also really good. The broth was super tasty, and the servings were massive for their price.

All-round I really enjoyed this place, and will definitely be going back to try more.
The Random Foodie
The menu is full of delicious choices for Vietnamese food but of course I cannot say no to a bowl of pho especially when it's cold. Not only was there a generous amount of broth and thick rice noodles, there were reasonable servings of beef, coriander and crunchy onions.
Chopinand Mysaucepan
This pho is like the lover that got away but has a special place in your heart.
TinqO
One of their best dishes is of course the traditional PHO (Beef rice noodle soup). Every time I come here I always order Pho since it is one of the best soup dishes in Sydney.

It's another Friday chill out dinner night and a couple of Friday's ago we ended up at PHD Vietnamese Restaurant. Now PHD Vietnamese use to be Pho Bac Hai Duong a couple of doors down. Cheesecake Boy had a bit of a panic when Pho Bac Hai Duong closed as he rates their pho tai as his favourite. Cheesecake Boy had been going to Pho Bac Hai Duong for his pho tai fix since he was 18, so he has a huge attachment to this place. PHD Vietnamese was the obvious choice for a Friday night pho craving for us, we miss the old decor of Pho Bac Hai Duong but as long as our favourites were still on the menu we weren't going to complain. There was an ulterior motive for going out this Friday night though, we have been in the process of looking for a new camera as Cheesecake Boy has been bitten by camera envy since we visited the zoo, so a lovely friend of ours lent us her G11 for a test drive. We are still undecided whether to go for the convenience of a super compact or the quality of an DSLR, we are

I'd heard great things about this place from friends, and had always intended to go. But as soon I saw that it had taken over the number one spot on Eatability's Top Ten for Value - from Jasmin's, no less - I had to take Mr Black on a spontaneous magical mystery dinner date.

I always order my usual, fried chicken with tomato rice. The crispy skin, the tender meat, what’s not to like? It was good, and the tomato rice a wonderful complement
The Food Zoo
After buying ice-cream at Serendipity, the BF and I realised we were actually starving! So we drove to Marrickville shops and wandered around the main street. They say, if you’re looking for a good restaurant, always go to the ones that are packed and bus

We have soup cravings and head to one of our old favourites, Pho Bac Ha Duong Vietnamese Restaurant, Illawarra Road, Marrickville. This is our favourite place in Marrickville for Bun Thit Nuong but tonight is for soup. Pho Bac Ha Duong has a tick in every
Simon Park
Other than being a great bowl of pho at a reasonable price, it was the first bowl of pho that I didn’t feel the need to add any condiments to augment the flavour of the soup. To do so would have been unnecessary at best, and at worst, would have done it a disservice.

This miserable and cold weather just calls for pho. Pho is a popular Vietnamese beef noodle soup. And when I’m in the mood for pho, the one place that I head to is Pho Bac Hai Duong in Marrickville.

Like religion and politics, debate about the best pho always leads to controversy. Heck, there’s even vigorous argument on whether pho in Australia is actually better than pho in Vietnam. I’m a fan, a huge fan. This red palace tribute to pho is right up there in my books. READ: noodlies favourite pho in the world Oh, just to confuse things they have two pho shops; this one, phd , which is also the first branch, and a larger one around the corner on Marrickville Road called pho phd . According to Michael, the newer branch “has bigger seating capacity. With city views, it has more of a dining ambiance” but rest assured he says “the menu items and prices are almost the same”. He might be right, but I’d still prefer the original phd. phd 30 Illawarra Road, Marrickville Ph: 9559 5078 pho phd 260 Marrickville Road, Marrickville Ph: 9090 2869 Share this: Share on Tumblr Google+

Meat Not Fresh. If you want to try soup this was the place to go to... but not anymore unfortunately.
1) Meat is not fresh in the Spicy Beef Noodle
2) Bad service
3) Overpriced...Pho An in Bankstown is much better
Miss Deliziosa
Great consistency. Decent prices and good portions teamed with great flavours. Have been to this place a few times over the past few years and the quality is still as good as the first time. I love the pancake with pork & prawn as it is always nice and crispy. Have never experienced bad service unlike some others here and have come here numerous times as mentioned.
Carlamurphy86
Bad food quality. Wait for at least half an hour to get our food ready which was cold and tastes bland. upon asking waiter i got the very rude reply "it is the way the food get comes out of kitchen". Not worthy of trying.

Worse service ever!. Ordered stir fried beef ( bo luc lac), realised halfway through the beef is still cold.
I advised the waiter and she said its suppose to be rare, IT WAS UNCOOKED and I'm not stupid, this dish is not meant to be rare. The arrogance!
The waiter reluctantly took back to the kitchen and came back with the same plate with the cooked meat.

Here's a lesson in customer service... Ask the customer what they would like, Cook a new batch or at least 'pretend' to and serve it on a new plate. Offer a discount, or don't even charge for your mistake.

Or even just don't do any of the above suggestions and at least be nice about your mistake, don't insult me!

Why I like PhD Vietnamese Restaurant. Very reasonable, delicious, clean and quick service and staff are courteous and efficient.

NEVER AGAIN. WORST SERVICE IN SYDNEY. I don't know why I came back a second time. First time I ate here the owner (the guy with the mole on his face) wouldn't take the order from my wife. When she spoke he turned his back to her, blatantly ignored her and would only take the order from me which I assume means he has some major issues with women. Like a fool I came back a second time. This time I ordered a beef red curry and another dish over the phone. I stressed the 'red' 3 times and even asked the lady to repeat the order back to me. I drive over to pick it up and they hand over a green curry. I tell them that's not what I ordered and they say that if I want to replace it I have to wait a minimum 20 minutes because my order will go to the back of the queue (even though they messed it up and even though it means the rest of my meal will be cold by the time it comes out). So I take a seat to wait it out and a little later a new couple turn up for a sit-down meal. The owner shows them over to my table, taps me on the shoulder and tells me to move to another table - THE RESTAURANT IS HALF EMPTY!?! Finally my new order comes out already bagged up. I take it home and open it - and it's the EXACT SAME GREEN CURRY I SENT BACK! They basically took it back to the kitchen, waited 20 minutes, bagged it up and brought it back out! I'm a pretty forgiving diner (hence returning after a horrible first experience) but the service here is beyond atrocious. What a bunch of jerks. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

A+ pho soup. A+ vegetarian pho soup worth the trip to marrickville Friendly staff and lot of great viet dishes at at a decent price --GET AMONGST IT

Over flavoured stock in my beef pho, bloated and thirsty = MSG. Not recommended.

The sizzling beef was sweet and oily (urgh) and the salt&pepper squid was more like salt&pepper batter

Overrated and mediocre. Fowl foul.. My chicken pho didn't taste nice at all. Big pieces of chopped chicken with all the fatty skin, chopped bones, dark innards and everything ... urgh...it was just too medieval for me. I put the chicken aside and tried to enjoy the rest of the pho but the broth was unpleasantly sweet - too much star anise - so I gave up on it before my stomach rebelled. The salad that came with the pancake was a let down too. Instead of a big crunchy pile of fresh Vietnamese herbs and greens that you expect, they just served a few leaves of red lettuce with a sprig of normal garden mint on top. A small amount of shredded carrot in the sauce, but no radish. The pancake itself was alright and it was all fairly cheap, so no worries, but I'd look around for something better,
Urbanfork
Overrated.... I've sampled the pho here twice, and also given the bun bo hue and braised beef a go. Somewhat tasty, but hardly can one tout this to be the best pho in Sydney. It's not really good at all. If you like it, so be it, but note that Sydney's pho scene is rather lacklustre to begin with so even if this were the best in Sydney, it would be proving the rule.

My Local and Love It. No frills decor but great food, try the Vietnamese beef salad it rules my world!

Hands down, best pho ever! .... Hands down, best pho ever!
After spending 4 1/2 years searching for the tastiest pho in town I have finally found it. Chicken pho divine - perfectly aromatic, light and refreshing. Big pieces on bone but very juicy. I honestly have died and gone to pho heaven.

We only had the pho, but why would you need anything else? Superb!
Ems Wookie Wonka
My pho quest is over... 3 years and hundreds of pho bowls later, I can put my feet up and know I only have once place to visit now for a perfect bowl of pho. The broth is so deep in flavour with that gorgeous sweetness (but not too much) that many a pho can lack. It was so good I didn't even bother putting any chili or hoisin sauce in, which is an absolute first for me. The other half added both it about half way through his bowl and regretted it as it really wasn't necessary. Go try!
Mandible AU
Good broth, chewy beef. The soup has great flavour but I'm annoyed by the thickly sliced beef and it's chewiness. It never seems to be fresh or perhaps they use a cheap cut. (I've eaten here about a dozen times).

Their other dishes are actually quite good too, particularly the combination vermicelli salad/noodle. All in all they're a good place to dine.
Erica Zhong
Love the pho. Love their #15 combination pho. Rich and flavorsome broth. Also love the pancake, claypot pork belly and combination vermicelli. Speedy service.
Selc
Worst pho I've ever had. Too much star anise. Any other pho place in Marrickville taste better.

SADLY DISAPPOINTED. Looking at the neighborhood, I thought that PHD would be a good place for traditional Pho and Vietnamese cuisine.
Sadly Disappointed.

I could have looked pass the overly sweet soup broth, the bland ice coffee and the lack of complementary tea. But overcharging us for a dish we didn't order was the last straw.

Sure, I can understand that mistakes can happen, but they insisted they were correct when we pointed out the mistake. Only after going through the bill line by line of what everyone ordered did they finally concede they overcharged us.

This is a Vietnam I would like to forget.

PS. I hardly write reviews. But after this experience I felt I needed to share this with the public.

Can't go wrong - if you can get a seat!. To my mind, the best, friendliest, most unpretentious Vietnamese place I have ever been to in Sydney. Excellent (and I truly mean excellent) pho, but so many of the other menu items are a stand-out as well - I highly recommend the beef stew with rice (sounds dull but is an insanely tasty treat), steamed wontons, and the herb duck (my partner is a duck fanatic and swears by it).

However, (and it's a minor criticism) I'm not so big on some of the deep fried items - salt and pepper squid/eggplant/tofu tend to be more batter than anything else, and end up a bit chewy. With so many other great things on the menu though, it's not a big problem.

Oh, and the price!? For the quality of the food, you might wonder why you would want to cook at home, it's such good value for money.

It can be a bit hard to get a seat in the evening at prime dining times, and you can usually spot the restaurant from Illawarra road by the lines waiting outside, but it's worth the wait - or getting there earlier or later, as the place seems to never be shut...

Favourite Pho place. Love this place & have been coming for years as it's the best pho we've had - rivals Bankstown & Cabramatta.
Always order either the raw beef or pho dac biet (special combination pho), another fan of the banh xeo (vietnamese pancake).
The staff are great at welcoming regular customers but aren't always the friendliest.
Great prices for amazing food.

Sweet. They have a sweet broth they use for all their soups, nice ingredients, well cut beef. Nice tea.

PHD is without question the best Pho in Sydney- rivaling anything I've had in Vietnam or elsewhere..... and as for other reviewers saying the service is poor- we eat here every week and the people at PHD are always lovely to us- the owners English isn't strong- hence little talk when being served- a friendly, interesting character non the less. Long story short- love phd- try it, you will love it.

I like this restaurant, I come here once every two weeks or when I'm in the area. Service is adequate but the food is amazing. It exceeds my expectations on all levels for this price bracket. It is what it is, it's not fine dining, it's cheap and cheerful authentic Vietnamese food.

Amazing pho.... Don't come for the service....but that's not why I go. Best pho i've had in Sydney and rivals Vietnam.

Nice food, Rude Service. Came here on a weeknight with a collegue for dinner. It was nearly full, luckily we just scored a table, as the staff pointed to the table for us. They supplied menus and promptly took our order. The table on each side cleared and then people who came in after and were waiting were seated and supplied with tea (we weren't when we were seated). After nearly half an hour, the people on both sides has received their meals and were nearly done. I was about to ask about ours, when a young male come out and slammed some tea on our table with a scowl on his face (no words, very angry!). Then we receive our prawn sugar cane sticks (a Viet fav. of mine) and the Pho and Bun with Coconut Noodles. The sugar cane and dressing was very nice indeed and the Bun/coconut noodle dish was very nice and something I hadn't tried before! Pho was good also said my collegue, it smelt and look like a good beef pho - although we were fairly hungry after waiting for so long and seeing guests on each side have their meal and leave. No apology or explaination for the delay, and never once a smile or word from any staff. It was offputting (the service), the food was nice also. It is clearly a busy place as it was full and people coming in from the street were often waiting (although they didn't have to wait long) for a table, so if you come do not be put off if you have to wait as the food is nice and fair prices. If staff were at least a little bit friendly it would have made it much more enjoyable.

Got a chicken Pho here after being recommended by a friend, have to say very disappointed. The chicken was mainly fatty off-cuts of thigh pieces and contained bones. Broth was oily but tasty and waaaaaay too many onions both normal and spring but hey, everyone's tastes are different. I was more upset about the lack of edible chicken. Would give it another try though!

Great pho. Such lovely broth, nice cuts of meat, good portions. Service is another story - I don't understand why people open restaurants and feel like its ok to be absolutely miserable when asked to serve their customers, everything was done with humph but when the food is that good it ends up permissible. Whatever the case the hubby and I will go back.

Good veggie pho, the drinks were a bit sweet (not suprisingly) and my partners dish was not a showstopper but other than that thumbs up.

Still the best pho in Sydney. Fresh tender beef and earthy, slightly aniseed-y broth. Have it with a lemon soda and you'll be very satisfied.

Food is nothing special but service is slow and waiters had too much attitude...more than the usual viet noodle shop has

Phonominal. Aside from the bill, the Pho here was clearly the highlight. Served in a bowl the size of a large wok, PHD's Pho was chock full of noodle and plenty of nicely sliced beef. Alone, this was a meal and a half.
However we also fressed on some extras: fried eggplant, beef and bamboo shoots, salt and pepper tofu, chicken and ginger shallots stir fry, fresh tofu salad and steamed rice. All the latter was tasty but surpassed by the Pho.
Served by the family and run by the rather serious head of the household, the place was busy and like any shrewd Viet or Thai restaurant, only accepts cash. $45 per couple. Pretty good value.
Come for the Pho.

Didn't like it!. After reading so many great reviews about this place, I had very high hopes for this restaurant. PHD is the same restaurant as the former Pho Bac Hai Duong. The differences being a slight name change and a new location, only a couple of doors down.

To say we were disappointed would be a slight understatement. Both the Chicken and Beef Phos were far too oily. Although cheap at $8.50 for the regular sized Phos, the broths were rich and very heavy, quite the opposite to our other Pho experiences.

The Chicken Pho was served with the fatty skin still on which wasn't very pleasant.

The oil present in both broths was definitely the major fault in these dishes. The broth definitely needed more refining before serving. While heavy and rich Phos can be delicious like the one served at Pho Tau Bay, an oily broth can be a disaster. To make it worse, once the broth started to cool down, the oiliness was accentuated.

Pho here i come. The soup base is the most important part of the Pho dish.
Phd has one of the best Pho (vietnamese thick rice noodle) with very authentic soup base.
The restaurant itself is clean n nice. It just feels comfortable to eat here compare to a lot of other vietnamese restaurants that I have been to.
We have tried the egg noodles with crispy chicken, vietnamese pancake and Pho. The Pho is the best dish. Others are just average.
Come here for the Pho as other dishes may disappoint you.
YOu know I am fussy xoxo
