Review Hellenic Bakery - Marrickville

Trang Le
A family owned local business selling handmade biscuits, gelato and pastries. They offer a range of cakes for special occasions, a gelato bar, hot pastry section and some soft drinks. I tried the biscuits and yum, comes perfectly with a cup of coffee. The sausage roll and the beef pie were just average and a tad too salty for my liking. On another occasion, I came by the second time to try their gelato and picked the chocolate flavour for a sunny day. The gelato is soft and packed with milk chocolate flavours, however too sweet for me as well. Otherwise the service is great and they take both cash and card payments with no surcharges.

We once bought a big tiramisu cake from here and the portion was generous for its price, and of course, it was perfectly made with all the right flavours. This time we decided to buy a number of small cakes and they looked great on the high tea stand.

This Greek bakery is an institution and has been around for decades. Their koulourakia are the best with the perfect amount of orange zest. There is a huge selection of Greek sweets, pastries and breads. Their tiropita and spanakopita are also really good.

Best hot cross buns I've ever eaten. Raisins were clean and plump, orange peels were fresh and prominent. I ate 3 in one day... trying to hold back from a 4th. Curry pies and cannolis are great too.

My old review has been deleted somehow.. The girl on the counter was shouting to me while I was looking around. "Which one??????????" I was standing there for only 20 seconds cause I have to catch the train in few minutes , also there was no name cards infront of the bread, it looks all same pastry. I don't expect your explanation of the bread but at least you shouldn't shout to your customer. Honestly, if you don't want to work, just go home. Rude and immature staff ever I met in Sydney.

What a great spot to enjoy some delicious treats - amazing cakes, slices, gelato for all tastes and likes. The staff are friendly, welcoming and super helpful. Definitely a place I will return to frequently.

First time here today by chance. A feast for the eyes and the taste buds. I wanted something savoury and sweet so I had a piece of feta and spinach pie and an aniseed and almond biscuit - wow so satisfying. I enjoyed it and would make the trip there again. - lucky I don't live too far away.

I wrote a review on here years ago with 5 stars saying if I could give 6 stars I would. It's been 4 days since this has been on my mind and I simply can't let this one slide. I purchased the lemon cake from your store on Thursday at 4:20pm for a birthday dinner, drove it for about 20mins and decided to pull over to take a photo to send to mum. To my disbelief saw the top of the cake decoration had all melted and was sliding to one side. Called the store right away to tell them and made my way back thinking I'll just exchange it for something else. On arrival at the store I was treated like a criminal as if I had bought the cake hours ago and left it in the car for it to melt. Got into an argument with the lady that's been working there for over 20 years. Yes I know you've been there a long time but it doesn't give you the right to treat your customers in such a rude manner. When a customer has been inconvenienced in such a way you should really be apologetic about the situation not make them feel like it's their fault. So instead of an exchange I asked for a full refund and left without a cake for the birthday dinner I was attending. Birthday person had no cake thanks to this situation. Management should look into not only their staff customer service but also their cake making skills. How can a cake not even set properly like the one you sold me when it was made a day ago. A different lady told me when it was made because I was thinking of buying a different one and she stopped me because she said the other cakes were too old and she didn't recommend it.

I mainly came in for a tub of gelato and they packed so much into it that the lid wouldn't close and stuck to it a bit...but I can't really call that a bad thing, along with fairly low prices it made for excellent value. The gelato range is limited and unadventurous but done with a lovely smooth creamy texture. Then you have two counters worth of other sweets, I only got to the cannoli but they were lavish.

Greek treats are good. Sometimes hit and miss with the freshness of fruit on tarts. Greek coffee could be stronger. Some staff are fantastic and others don't even smile.

Nice greek treats. Coffee a bit weak and pricey for what you get. Gelato nothing to write home about but several of the cakes are yum. Service is friendly

Its always a pleasure to come here and be welcomed to local friendly faces. I tried one of their greek specialities for the first time. It looked like a greek lasagne but had penne and minced meat underneath the crunchy layer. It can be bought hot or cold to heat at home. It was delicious and had a unique taste to it, when compared to Italian pasta dishes.
Prices were reasonable. So keen to try all they frozen cakes esp the nutella ones!! Although i tried the nutella baklava it had a subtle nutella taste :(

Hellenic Patissiere and Gelato Bar is my go to place for traditional Greek biscuits, pastries and sweets. They are as good as you get in Greece. Everything is reasonably priced, you can eat in and all of their non-Greek sweets are also darn good, especially the cannoli (pictured). #hellenicpatisserie

Chocolate gelato was really good, the eclair wasn't overly sweet, had two other biscuits, one powdered and the other not which had a great texture but no discernible flavour. Best to have them in moderation with coffee as they are obviously very sweet.

We tried their baklava ice cream (on a stick) as well as a baby cone with sprinkles for my son in the shop which were both average. The baklava flavour is not very strong and my son didn’t like the vanilla ice cream inside the cone. We decided to take away their caramel mud and New York cheesecake which looked delicious but again wasn’t as good as other versions I had.

Service was friendly but it was overall average for us. 2.5
Stars.

This place has been around before i was born :), has been where it is next to Marrickville station for the last 35 years and 5 years before that it was at the end of Illawarra road close to Marrickville road :).

The Girls behind the counter are super helpful and definitely make you feel welcome :)!! My friend recommended for me to come here for the Bougatsa, best in Sydney. It's a Custard Pie with Phyllo and ground cinnamon :D.
She warmed it up for me and no joke it was like time froze when i was eating it haha.. im a custard connoisseur and it tasted Amazing :)!!

Another thing that struck my fancy was a custard croissant they had surprisingly with no almonds sprinkled on top of it haha.. that's the standard these days for some reason. Almonds aren't kind to me so that was obe pastry i haven't had in ages so i scoffed that down to .. so good aswell :D!!

They got heaps more of greek pastrys and cookies :), I asked if they do coffee which they inclined but they said only strong Greek coffee in those "Copper Coffee Pot" :). So if you can't handle strong coffee you can always get your flat white, Soy latte etc across or down the road :)

Its open till late daily and is a local favourite since the old days :)! Its places like this that need to be open for a further 40 years :D!!

Lots and lots of tasty treats to choose from. It’s hard to resist buying one of everything but the sugar really adds up after 1-2 treats. Definitely recommend for anyone with a sweet tooth!

Don’t get fool by innocent white look of “Galaktoboureko” , the very famous traditional Greek dessert!
This Galaktoboureko flavour Ice Cream is a sweet custard and bathed in flavour syrup, cinnamon and hint of orange ( I might be not so accurate on this, but that’s what I tasted) and beware... that’s a very sweet, sweet dessert!
Spiked of sugar will hit you right away!

Huge selection of Greek sweets and pastries and a nice range of gelato too. Golden gaytime gelato was a little mild on flavour but the baklava flavour was beautifully sweet. In terms of pastries, I tried the baklava and galaktoboureko. The baklava was a little soggy, the galaktoboureko was delicious.

Service is always extremely friendly here, you are welcomed like family. Prices are also very reasonable. I will be back to try more of the multitude of options available, it's almost too hard to choose!

I had a craving for some baklava and pasties (spinach & ricotta). Both of these failed epically! I spent over $20 for 5 items!! The pastry on the pasties were stale, soft (not crunchy) and filling was average. The biggest disappointment was the baklava. Similar story with the pastry, soft and stale. I’m questioning why this place is rated 4 stars and don’t think I’ll be returning back soon.

Lovely cannoli and almond Greek biscuits. It's best to buy the cannoli early on in the day, otherwise the shell gets a bit soft from the cream. Best flavour is still the original ricotta in my opinion, the others tend to be too sweet. The almond biscuits are a favourite of mine, very fragrant, fresh, and perfect with afternoon tea and coffee.

Got gifted a Galaktoboureko cake. Usually this cake would have a gorgeous semolina custard smooth centre and be so moorish you just want to eat it all. Unfortunately not the case here. The custard itself was so set like they added too much gelatine. It wasn't smooth or creamy just solid without wobble so was quite disappointed. Definitely not worth the calories.

Located on Illawarra road marrickville, Hellenic is hard to miss with its massive blue building. There is both a cafe and a patisserie and gelato place behind. I got a strawberry sorbet which was refreshing. Service was friendly. There were some really cool Nutella cakes on display.

A very nice Greek bakery in marrickville - the cakes on display was quite unique to what Ive come to expect. It was very hot the day we went so had to get some of the gelato. The blue bubblegum gelato was something I haven't really see from other places so tried it and it was surprisingly good. The staff were also very helpful and insisted I try before I buy

This place is an institution to Greek community. I've perish all been coming here since I was young teen.

The pastry baked daily, the smell of fresh bread to soften the senses, this place rocks.

And did I mention prices that make you think it's still the 90's ?

A small place for you to release your stress over everything. They have cakes with reasonable price that make me want to visit everytime I pass by Marrickville station. They have friendly staff, and I love their cheesecake the most :).

A lovely bakery/pastry/gelato shop and located close by to Marrickville train station. There was an enticing selection of delicious treats on show it was so difficult to decide what I wanted. As I had walked for a while looking for a ice cream/gelato (visited 2 shops beforehand and both were shut...having a bad run with outlets been shut at the moment), I decided to check on Zomato for a place to go and this one came up with a good rating so decided to check it out.

I was greeted by a friendly bunch of ladies exuding wonderful hospitality. Eyeing off all the goodies in the cabinets I went with a Baklava Gelato as well a Galaktoboureko. I ate the gelato straightaway and it was nice and creamy. The sweetness of the baklava came through. I took the Galaktoboureko away so couldn't possibly finish both there. Once home I needed to tuck into it and was delicious. The flaky filo pastry was great and had a creamy custardy filling.

Cannot believe I haven't been here sooner!
This is the best traditional patisserie I've found. So hidden you'd forget a gem like this existed. You can also buy by the kilo so if you're "bulking" this is the place to be

Great food and service. The foods are fresh, reasonably priced and the staff are very welcoming. It's a great place to grab a sweet when buying your freshly baked bread. The only problem is trying to choose between the vast array of sensational sweets, pastries and breads.

Old school, tremendous choice. No hipsters here. Staff looked like they've worked here for 100 years but in a good way. Really friendly.

Huge range of stuff - obviously a Greek focus but has other things like cannoli, tiramisu. Have been here twice and when they vary off the strict Greek stuff it gets pretty average. Anything French like (eg the creme brulee) just doesn't quite get there. But if you're after something sweet, a huge range here.

Best Bread & Great Cakes. This is the only place to buy bread. Forget the other bakeries that bake bread from ingredients that go stale the next day.
Hellenic bakery may have pricier bread, but at least it lasts two to three days.

Excellent breakfasts and coffee. This is the cafe attached to the famous bakery. Bright, clean, spacious. If you get the vegetarian big breakfast ask for fried halloumi cheese instead of eggs. It goes so well with the lightly blanched, lemony fresh spinach and fried mushrooms. Makes a very nice change from eggs. They're really friendly and eager to please here, so asking for variations on the menu is easygoing. The juice blends are delicious too. Best coffee I've had in Marrickville. Come to think of it, since leaving Marrickville this is the only place I'd visit for. Don't leave without loading up on good bread and biscuits from next door.
