Review Philippe - Melbourne

Dalena Pham (msdalena)
A little French bistro in the heart of Melbourne. When you walk downstairs it immediately takes you away from Melbourne and you could for a second think that you're in an area of France. The food is splendid! Seeing the restaurant with its awards displayed gives you an idea that the food will be excellent. Everything was delicious, surprisingly even the sides wowed us. Their famous duck was so well balanced with the sauce and the escargot in its butter garlic sauce. We always know that the food and service will be great here. Whenever you're feeling a bit of French food, Philippe does not ever disappoint.

We had an incredible experience at Philippe. The service was fantastic and the food was even better. Portions were very large and the flavours were very authentic - so delicious! We never order dessert at restaurants but the creme brulee was too good to pass it. Would definitely recommend for a date night!

Ordered a bunch of dishes and my Fav was the duck breast! Super tender and crispy. The snail was really good too loved the garlic tomato flavours and their mains portions were HUGE!

Great service, relaxed atmosphere, French food cooked with passion and attention to detail. The duck is the go to dish here and it did not disappoint - wonderful sauces and rich desserts. What more could you want?

Celebrating a 22.02.2022 birthday couldn't have been better at Philippe. Spencer served us with his best attention and so did the rest of the crew. The food was awesome..can't go wrong with the snails, brochollini, pate, and not forgetting the duck! The must try place for French dining! Thank you for the Happy Birthday chocolate!

Perfect date night dinner in the city for French cuisine. Everything was top notch. If you head early there happy hour oyster for $2 which was an absolute bargain for the quality and freshness.

Philippe đŸ‡«đŸ‡· - Artisanal sourdough bread from Laurent bakery & French butter (Complimentary) - Burgundy snails cocotte en persillade, garlic & parsley butter 6/$20 - Traditional Wagyu beef tartare 100g , pickled radish, salsa verde $32 - French fries, Parmesan, garlic & rosemary $12 - Mayura station wagyu rump cap 300g $68 - Dry aged “Mila’s farm” duck breast rĂŽtisserie, braised duck leg, mushrooms, onion petals, roasted apricots, jus $52 Philippe is definitely the perfect French restaurant for your romantic date night! The ambience and atmosphere were absolutely lovely. They serve humble yet refined and gourmet French food. Everything we had was perfectly executed. We started with the sourdough bread and French butter! That was one of the best butter I have had! So creamy, buttery and fragrant. For entrees, we had the escargots and tartare. Can’t fault any of these. The flavours were perfectly balanced, just delicious! We ordered duck and waygu rump for mains. I will not stop raving about the duck because that was sublime!!! The duck was tender with a crispy skin. I could taste the duck fat melting in my mouth in each bite. The bright and tart jus complimented so well with the slight sweetness of the duck. The waygu was alright but the duck outshined it. Last but not least remember to order their chips. Can’t wait to visit Philippe again.

We had an exceptional experience at Phillipe. The food is overwhelmingly excellent - you will not be disappointed! Pictured is the cured salmon entree, which was probably the most delicious thing I have ever eaten.

Service is fantastic and the food is just out of this world!!! I ordered 4 meals and also had a taste of my partners and each dish was 10/10. It's not often a restaurant can get 5 star reviews from me, will recommend this place to anyone and everyone!! Bravo Phillipe ïżœïżœïżœ

I've been following Chef Phillipe around Melbourne since the early 90's and have never been disappointed by his food, charm and service team. His longevity in the food scene is testament to his love of fine food and hospitality and it shows in every bite of every dish. Highly recommended!!

I've been busting to get here since it opened. The wait and anticipation was well rewarded with the service and food. The staff were all lovely and looked after our group of six flawlessly. Then there was the food. Entrees of Wagyu tartare, escargots, charcuterie were all delicious with red Burgundy. Of course, rotisserie chicken was ordered. Along with duck porterhouse and rib eye. All were happy, especially me who got to sample a few dishes of other peoples plates. Get there!

25 years ago, Philippe Mouchel prepared our first French dinner at Paul Bocuse at Melbourne Central after we were married. We returned to eat at Philippe’s restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We eat at the “pass” where Philippe and his team of talented chefs prepared an amazing La Table Des Chefs - seasonal foods cooked, presented and explained by the team. It was supposed to be 5 courses but as the sommelier said “ I think Chef likes you” and it ended up being 6. French champagne, wines to match each course and a wonderful and attentive MaĂźtre d’ and Sommelier helped make this wonderful occasion even more memorable We had pickled mushrooms, sweet breads, pea soup or calamari carbonara, quail, apple sorbet, wagyu and beef cheeks, creme brĂ»lĂ©e and floating island with pina colada sorbet and we are officially full..... We can’t wait to go back!
Wanda Hernadi
The service was warm and attentive. Loved Philippe's menu offering and the wine list. Felt like I was in a bistro in France rather than in Melbourne! The Philippe team made our 10th wedding anniversary dinner a memorable one for our treasure trove of memories. Thank you Philippe & Team!!!

Just as amazing second time around! Food was great, atmosphere was great, service was great ! Would recommend!

An amazing experience and one that should be high on the foodie wish list. The particular dinner we went to was a culmination and hommage to the great chef Phillipe Mouchel. The event was an amazing and tantalizing journey into his career thus far and one of the highlights for me was the return of Phillipe's favourite chefs to the kitchen where each prepared courses from each of his previous restaurants. If you have ever wanted to taste the food from his career then this was the night! Whilst most people will not experience a night like this again as the chefs return to their own kitchens , we will be back to Phillipe to take the journey and experience from his menu again soon.

A truly special evening. The walls, which once housed Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Melbourne, have been transformed in to a French Bistro, the open kitchen is bustling and alive with the skilled craftsmen of cuisine. The food is, simply, beautiful. The chestnut veloute with mushroom emulsion is rich, sweet and luxurious. It's envelops you in it's decadent warmth. The beetroot cured salmon with winter vegetable salad tastes as beautiful as it looks, pink tipped slivers of salmon with shaved fennel and beautiful heirloom baby beetroot create such a wonderful colour contrast on the plate. The braised beef cheek was soft, unctuous, and fragrant with cumin. Our special dessert was personally crafted by the patissier for the occasion, a dome of vanilla mascarpone that encased layers of sponge, raspberry, and pistachio marzipan. The dark chocolate creme glacée had the perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness. There are so many wonderful dishes on the menu, I look forward to going back and trying them all.

We had a lovely dinner (wedding anniversary). Great food & service. We happened across “Phillippe” by chance, while out looking for somewhere to eat on a Monday night. As a bonus, it was Jazz night. Only sorry we couldn’t have eaten more!

Simply the best chef in melbourne, probably aus. Can't wait to get back . Great service great food

Was recommended to us and we had a wonderful evening. Food was fantastic. Wait staff were friendly. And would like to say a special thank you to our waitress Julie and the other 2 girls who looked after us tonight. In passing it was mentioned that it was my partners birthday, when desert came out it had a candle and chocolate birthday message....totally unexpected. So thank you for a wonderful evening and absolutely amazing food

Have visited quite a few times, and never once been disappointed. The chicken is incredible, but then again, so is everything else.... Thanks to Philippe for creating such a fantastic place to visit!

After a disappointing first experience, Philippe Mouchel personally invited us back for a fantastic second experience. The food was beautiful as expected however the service, which was the let down the first time around, was really outstanding. Waiters were both knowledgable and attentive and really made the night special. Philippe had taken on board our feedback and removed the table which we thought was poorly placed. He even made the duck special a permanent menu item! All in all it was a beautiful night and as old lovers of PM24, the kind gesture from Philippe to invite us back really made us feel valued. Thank you for a delicious meal and a wonderful evening!

Everything is fabulous - menu, presentation, wine list, staff, restaurant setting. Could not fault anything..

Well looked after, arriving early and spent time at the bar having a drink...Staff helpful and friendly. Food mostly excellent, with only a few minor (minor) points with my meal. Everyone else in the party very impressed. A decent selection of wines and we all had a great night...looking forward to going again soon.

Amazing food and good wine list! Best is to start off with oysters.

Beef eye fillet cooked to perfection

The porterhouse steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare, the entree was delicately delicious and enjoyable.

Went here for Valentine’s Day and it’s the first time I had French in Melbourne. Everything was cooked so perfect and so well, the ceviche was probably the best I’ve had so far in Melbourne. It was busy that night but loved every second of it, there was someone playing an accordion as well. Such a beautiful night.

Dined at Philippe and opted for 5 courses of signature Philippe dishes.
đŸœ PĂątĂ© en croĂ»te - pork and chicken pate which is very flavoursome. Has texture from pistachio nuts. Pickled vegetables are a nice accompaniment.
Tomato gazpacho - smooth tomato flavoured cold soup. Hints of basil.
Volaille - perfectly cooked chicken stuffed with mushroom. Fluffy crispy potatoes.
Mango oeuf Ă la neige - meringue floating on mango crĂšme anglaise. Wonderful dessert.
đŸ’â€â™€ïž service was attentive and friendly. Exactly what you expect from a fine dining restaurant.

Oysters in sea water jelly is recommended and the Escargots are beautiful. Should try to duck breast! First time in this restaurant and it gives me a lot of surprises. Recommended.

Quality produce, service friendly. Wait time was ~ 1 hour between entree and mains. Would recommend.

A group of eight booked some months in advance for dinner. A highlight was meant to be the soufflĂ©. However as this was only served on Saturday we booked the available time at 8.30pm. Our orders were taken at 9.15. The second wine ordered did not appear for thirty minutes. Our mains were served at 10.15 pm and the service was slow and waitress very Frenchly unfriendly. And guess what, there was NO SOUFFLÉ on the menu. So that’s eight desserts that were not ordered. Food otherwise was excellent.

‘Philippe’ by Paul Bocuse trained Chef, Philippe Mouchel, is a great place to celebrate a special occasion (or any other for that matter) with special friends, as was this visit. The food, as you would expect, is up there as some of the best French offerings you will find in Melbourne. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire dining experience.

The food was delightful and delicious. The canard duck breast rotissoire with mango was so creative, and so much fun to eat!! Can’t wait to have it again. Service was also very polite and friendly. Had a very lovely evening.

Came here at lunch, but didn’t opt for the lunch set (very economic). My brother and I ended up ordering 150 or so but really enjoyed our food. The brioche was very very nice and my favourite was my beef cheek dish.
Cindy
The oyster sea water jelly was so fresh when have it together with the sauce. For the entree we had the wagyu beef tartare and it was so fresh as well and crunchy as they use pomegranate inside. The toasted brioche with foie gras parfait is a must have! The brioche is so soft, tasty and goes so well with the quail and foie gras parfait and the jam. For the main we ordered duck rotisserie, it serves wit figs and duck leg which the duck leg is so tender. The figs also neutralise the taste of the duck. It goes so well together.
Helen
Nice French restaurant. Had lovely pate, steak with Bearnaise sauce, chips were delicious, also I adored the terrine. Lovely onion soup and bread. My only negative was they were a bit mean with the wine. The wine was below the line! Other than that one of the better French restaurants around.
Paul J Fisher
What an amazing restaurant, located down a lane way off Colins Street down stairs basement. Friendly staff with great service. The atmosphere was comfortable and the wine was awesome. We ordered the escargot, duck, fib eye and shared waygu beef tarte... the food was amazing and highly recommended
Tasteforyourbuds
The service at Philippe is great, perfect for date nights. Fresh oysters and the wagyu steak with bearnaise sauce is to die for! Would highly recommend. Would come back again

Sorry about the poor photo as it does not do it justice of how amazing the food was accompanied by fantastic staff. Highly recommend if you love your french food.

We had a spectacular experience for our first French dining. My partner and I came here for my birthday dinner and ordered two entrees and mains, paired with medium bodied red wine. The restaurant had a lovely ambience and the service was amazing. The escargots are extremely flavorful and I really enjoyed it! We also got French onion soup, braised ox cheek and gold band snapper with seafood. Every dish were cooked to perfection and beautifully presented, especially the ox cheek which is so tender and delicious. It was such an delightful new experience for us and we would definitely come back again!

Haven’t been here for ages. I was told by a friend that they would have a jazz night every first Monday of the month. We were sitting at the bar, ordering delicious cocktails, Wines and food. Service was amazing! Lovely crowds and vibes, beautiful jazz musics serenading our dinner. This place would be great for special occasions and a date. Definitely would come back next month for another Monday jazz session night

My friend recommended Philippe as one of his favourite French restaurants a few years ago. My partner wanted to take me out for a nice birthday dinner so I picked Philippe. The restaurant provides discounted evening parking at a flat rate but we already make other arrangement. It was a cosy restaurant located in the basement at the lane way next to Grand Hyatt hotel. It wasn’t packed on Monday night and there was a live French singing performance about to finish when we walked in. The service could be more attentive as we have to ask for the menu and waiter to refill our water. We ordered the bone marrow, duck for 2, chargrilled broccolini , Pinot noir and beer. We were told the duck will take 45 min to cook. Complimentary Warm baguette was served with butter and salt. The bone marrow was average but the duck was beautifully cooked. We are so stuffed after the main course that we couldn’t have dessert. You also get 25% discount up to maximum of $40 with the Entertainment book voucher.

Booked the restaurant last minute vis phone as we’d heard some good news at work. The front of house was very friendly and I asked him whether they had vegetarian options for my partner which he explained helpfully.

Then we got to the restaurant a couple minutes later and were greeted by the same friendly person and taken to the dining room. Our waiter (wish I had his name) was also incredibly welcoming. He took our wine orders first and I had the beautiful vouvray! He then explained the vegetarian options and also our degustation menu which sounded amazing but unfortunately we weren’t that hungry but I thought it was very thoughtful that the person had remembered that my partner is vegetarian.

We started with the mushroom veloute and the salmon. Both of which were exceptional and great portion sizes. We then proceeded with the mains of John Dory and cauliflower steak. I liked the John Dory itself but unfortunately not a big fan of the sauce itself and my partner also found some flavours in his dish not quite matching to his liking which is the reason why I’ve rated it 4. Mind you though the French butter and bread was divine

All in all a great night for a last minute booking. Will certainly recommend my friends and will be back. Best service we’ve experienced in a while! :)

Walking down the stairs through this lit doorway you are met by a warm room and host. Its much bigger than you realise from the outside.

- Quail - juicy and cooked perfectly. Pumpkin mash a surprisingly delicious match
- Steak tartar - **delicious - could not get enough** A must and this did not disappoint. Special mention as they did not go e xtra heavy on the pickle like other places - can appreciate the quality of the meat
- Eye fillet - cooked in a different way as normal charcoal steak. Enjoyed the grains with the raw steak. Nice to try a steak that is slightly different
- Deep fried mash - balls of soft pillowy heaven.

On the pricy side but matched with fantastic servuce. Not a place completely different to other French places, but great dishes that meet expectation. Perfect for a date, a lazy Sunday (with jazz?) Or a small birthday dinner.

I’ve never had French food before but I had really high expectations. Sadly I don’t think my palette enjoyed the food as much as everyone else who’s reviewed this place. But I liked the experience and everything tasted really fresh! I did like the foie gras on brioche, there was even a lot leftover after finishing the brioche so we ate it with the bread and butter that was on the table haha (foie gras tastes soooooo good paired with butter, I don’t care if this is a culinary sin). I also really liked the texture of the escargot but the sauce was super herby for my personal taste. Chips were amazing and seasoned well. Steak was a bit cold but cooked perfectly. Beef tartare was not too bad but I prefer the korean version better, or maybe I’m just super bias. Overall, food was a bit underwhelming but I would like to try the other menu items. :)
Karen
Best French restaurant ever. I've been here multiple times but never bothered to review it. Oysters are cheap and fresh at $2 a pop. Presentation and service is immaculate.

Anyway, this time had the express lunch ($25), a light goat and blue cheese souffle with a side salald and a glass of wine. It was so fluffy and the cheese sauce was divine! This suited me fine, but if you were hungrier you might need another side or go for the 2 course express lunch.

We took part in the Taste of France worldwide event which was a 4 course set menu. We added a bottle of wine from their well priced list which had lots to choose from but not so many it was overwhelming.

The food was great. Expertly prepared. Served by very good French waiters who I'm sure were disgusted by the manners of some of the other diners - chewing the meat off the quail bones and spitting it onto the plate only to eat it with a fork! Sometimes I'm ashamed to be Australian. We tried to ignore them and get on with our meal which was delicious.

Tip - go early and get the corner table for two. Very comfortable and cosy.

This is one of my favorite french restaurant in Melbourne! Great food and great service!
I have been here almost 10 times already!
They have lunch set menu as well, which is very reasonable and great qualities!

3.5 is a more appropriate rating for this French CBD Bistro. The atmosphere and service at this location are only positive, attentive and efficient.

The menu is relatively narrow, and more options and variety would be desirable in future.

My dining partner had the pan seared snapper; after trying a bite of it, I felt it was rather awful, with a distinct ammonia taste - fresh it was not.

On the the flip side the 300gr Porterhouse with bernaise was very good, perhaps could have been a little hotter, but cooked well - no complaints.

The dauphine potatoes were lovely as a side, whilst the French style peas were fine, but unremarkable.

The rhum baba shared for dessert with lime sorbet was decent. The sorbet was sensational, mango gel was nice, the baba itself soaked in rum at the table just didn’t offer the flavour combination I was expecting. The rum overpowered the baba. However, it was good enough to eat.

This is a thoroughly decent restaurant, but the menu is lacking and unimaginative. Great location, decor and atmosphere, however I’d opt for other French offerings in future.

Decided to try french cuisine for the first time. Was pleasantly surprised.
Service and food was great.
We had to try the escargot but all the other meats as well: chicken, beef, lamb

Service 4/5
Food 4/5
Ambiance 4/5

Bon AppĂ©tit đŸœ Came here to celebrate boo birthday 🎂🎉 It is our first time dining in a proper French restaurant, and I am glad that I made the right decision coming here.
.
I don’t know much about French cuisine, but I would say the menu looks so tempting I know I have to come. For starter, we had the CHEF’S OYSTERS SELECTION ($27) it was so good and tasted fresh, no fishy taste or smell at all. You wouldn’t complete your French food adventure without some ESCARGOTS with garlic & parsley butter, croĂ»tons ($21) I was kind of hoping they serve the snails in their shells, not in an escargotiĂšre, but it do make a lovely presentation. It was buttery, garlicky and rich, just tasty!🐌. And We were given some complimentary bread with mustard butter I believe, so yum! I would ask for more but I gotta save room for the main.
.
The MACEDON RANGES DUCK RÔTISSOIRE 🩆 ($55pp minimum 2 ppl) was the dish intrigued us the most, BANNOCKBURN CHICKEN BREAST RÔTISSOIRE 🐓 ($38) is their signature dish so my friend had that, and my sis got the Japanese & Blue Mountain charcoal grilled PASTURE RAISED EYE FILLET 280g ($55). I don’t know where to start as they were all amazing, the star was probably the beautiful medium rare eye fillet 🐼. It was cooked to perfection, exceptionally seared and melted in your mouth. The confit duck leg was my second favourite, it was superbly made, tender and succulent. Although I was hoping they would give us the whole duck, as the price wasn't cheap. Last but not least, the famous rotissoire chicken🐔 The chicken breast was moist and flavoursome, still good but I expected much more. FRENCH FRIES ($10) were packed with crunch.
.
At last, thank you for the waitress who helped me set up the birthday surprise. We got the last CRÈME BRÛLÉE in the house, it was creamy nothing to complain about. Overall we had a wonderful evening, next time I would love to come back for lunch!
Jennitals
Ordered: fois grais, chocolate fed wagyu, lamb, fries and pea salad

LIT!⭐: the star of the show was definitely the chocolate fed wagyu. You can subtly taste the chocolate and the meat was cooked perfectly, it made me question “what magic is this?”. Hands down favourite steak my bf and I have tried.
Prior to your meal, you are given one of the best hot bread and butter.
The side of peas was very good too.

NOT SO LIT: the lamb was delicious on first bite... until I tasted the chocolate fed wagyu, the lamb dish was quite bland in comparison. So don’t order both!

Thanks for having us, were coming back for chocolate fed wagyu x
Mark Russell
The food is fairly typically French, very well prepared. Service is professional and attentive and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. Main gripe is that for the price portions are on the small side, especially the deserts.
Srslyfoods
Quality ingredients cooked superbly for $40 for two courses including a 250ml carafe of wine, has to represent the best value for money in Melbourne CBD. As there were two of us, we chose two different dishes for both entree and main and every dish was excellent. Given that the 250ml carafe is $20 on the menu, you're paying $20 for two superb dishes (or $30 if you want dessert as well). On top of the terrific food, service and ambiance are exceptional. Highly recommend.
Tilley Eats
Excellent value 2 or 3 course lunch menu plus wine/beer, especially for the high quality French cuisine and fine dining experience. The perfect place to impress with colleagues or clients in you’re working in the CBD.

My boyfriend and I came back for our second anniversary! Absolutely in love with the food and the service is amazing. We would recommend the Tables Des Chef for any couples who are looking for a unique dining experience :)

Wow. Dined here today and had the $50 three course menu which includes a 250ml carafe of red/white wine or draught beer. This has to be the best value lunch in Melbourne ! The food, service and presentation all top notch. Nice to see Philippe himself supervising all dishes as they came out of the kitchen. Five of us dined here today and all of us would give it five stars.

Melbourne is spoilt for choice for French cuisine and, in the CBD, Philippe has the combination of an intimate venue and a classic French dining experience – with the waiters being French, you could mentally transport yourself to a restaurant in France without having to pay in Euro. Our recommended dishes are

To quote my partner after our dinner here ‘That was so yummy, I’m actually shocked!’ We had the natural oysters, the foie gras pate, the wagyu tartare, the wagyu rump steak and the spring lamb. The least favourite was the foie gras but that’s because of our palettes, not at all the restaurant’s fault. It was still a good dish and the brioche was to die for. We went on their jazz night which really added to the experience. Will definitely go here again when we’re feeling like good French dishes.

Staff: 4.5/5
Food: 4.5/5
Ambience: 4/5
Will I return: Definitely when I crave for some French food

Our new favourite French restaurant, tucked away in a small side street off collins street. The interior decor of the restaurant is a lot more modern than I had expected.
A group of 8 of us dined here a few nights ago and everything was spot on. The complimentary sourdough bread was warm and soft and tasted so good that we had many refills.
As we weren’t overly hungry, we decided to order individual dishes rather than trying out their 5 course degustation.
The wagyu tartare was amazing and was my favourite dish of the night. Their signature roast chicken was moist and juicy, their steak was equally well cooked. Other dishes tried was the duck and barramundi which also received good reviews.
The chocolate fondant was probably one of the best fondants I tried in Melbourne. We ordered 3 and each were perfectly cooked.
If we were to visit again, I will no doubt try the 5 course which is also reasonably priced at $90.

The only downside I would say is that with an open kitchen, the whole restaurant smelt of charcoal and oil. This seems to be the trend nowadays for Melbourne restaurants. It would be great if we can walk out without smelling like oil.

I’d been here three times now, once for lunch and twice for dinner. Each time I was impressed with their service and attentiveness.

The most remarkable time was just recent when I had a catch up with 3 other friends, whom I haven’t seen in a while due to us staying in different cities. It was a fantastic night out.

Some of us had arrived early so we hung out at the bar for a drink while waiting for our table to be readied. We then moved to our table to have charcuterie while waiting for our friend who was running late.

We had the best rotisserie for the night, both the duck and the chicken- cooked to perfection and I continued eating the duck even though I was so full because it was just so tasty and tender!

We also had the wagyu rump steak , which again was just so deliciously cooked. Perfect medium rare.

Accompanied by a very wide range of wine list, this place is a must visit if you haven’t already!

I will definitely choose to go back again when I feel like having really good french food!

Love the quail & foie Gras parfait, as well as the duck rotissoire especially! The duck was cooked so well. Delightful dinner with attentive service.
Evelyn Yong
The perfect venue for either a weekday client meeting or date night on a cold winters evening. Whilst the tables in the restaurant are great, I find the best experience is at the bar where you can have some interaction with the staff at the bar/oyster & cold bar. This time we sat at the oyster bar. Our Freshly shucked oysters were a perfect combination with our French Chardonnay. The other bonus being at the bar is that you have access to $2 oysters all night. You can also access the full restaurant menu in addition to a bar special which was beef bourguignon tonight ($25 for the main plus a red wine ! Such good value). We ordered a main size steak tartare to share as the entree - it was well seasoned with a smoked slow cooked 63 degree egg yolk - dare I say it’s probably the best steak tartare in Melbourne! The delightful service, together with the wonderful food completely made the evening - our generous tip tonight reflective. New favourite place. Husband was very full and happy.

Took my son for his 23rd b'day last night. As we have lived in France for 2 years we do know how French cuisine. Ambiance, wait staff, food, music, drinks all suburb! Favorite dish so far were the escargots and plat principal was the chicken. I will definitely return and promote Philippe to family and friends.

4.5

It hided deeply in a small lane and down in the basement so I couldn’t find it out earlier. Food are sooo good ( fresh ingredient, perfectly cook) what else could I ask for?

Highlight..
The duck are delicious and juicy, crispy from outside and the level of fat under the skin are just right, ticking all my boxes of a good roasted duck!!! ( I’m really picky for this dish as a Cantonese)

Bun's Food Diaries
Came across these guys on the Entertainment book and when I saw the four rating thought that it was the go for lunch. We had the 2 courses for $40 pp less our coupon discount. This included a drink as well and I found it to be fantastic value.
For entrees was the French onion soup and confit duck. I loved how rich the soup was and cheesy flavours. Confit duck was a cold dish but tasted nice.
For mains was the porterhouse steak (done medium) and chargrilled salmon. The steak dish didn't look very exciting but was well flavoured and not at all chewy. I wasn't too much a fan of the savoury sauce with the salmon but the fish itself was well cooked.
Service was very pleasant. Our waitor was always polite and we were attended to whenever we needed.
Anan Du
Was good experience. Food was great. The only problem was when I was paying which was 179 dollars and before I could enter the pin the amount became 234 dollars. Not sure if this was a efpo machine fault or............anyways hopefully no one else is having this issue.
Princess Got The Hungries
One word. Cockcroach. That ruined our meal.

The food was good, and the service excellent until the cockroach. We noticed it just after ordering dessert that a cockroach was sitting on a wall, close to the ceiling, but directly next to our table.

We told the waiter, who told the manager, who told the chef. The waiter who initially told us he didn't know what could be done before speaking to the manager, never bothered to come back to us. The manager didn't come over either. They didn't even bother to move us to another table even though there were empty tables.

So thanks for ignoring the cockroach sitting next to us. I only hope that you actually fixed the problem afterwards, and didn't just ignore it, like you did us.

I have visited this resturant a few times and the quality of the food is very consistent and I have not been disappointed. The staff are very good and attentive, no waiter arrogance that I have experienced elsewhere. The menus has something for every one, and the atmosphere is friendly.
Cassandra Highfield
The service was very good. The food was divine. The lunch menu is great value. The rare steak and mash potato (from heaven) was beautiful. An enjoyable lunch. Always share with good company and I will be back.
Secret Taster
This one is hard to rate because I feel like the odd one out.

I got to know it as A friend had “checked in on face book” with this restaurant and gave a really good feedback for it. But like many restaurants, it was on my “need to try list”.

After a few months, another friend said they were looking really forward to try it. She raved about the chef.

So, that was my sign to try it out.

First time there: had a fish entree and Charcuterie.
Duck to share. Potato gratin. Can’t even remember the dessert. My favorite was the bread they served followed by potato gratin. Nothing from entree or main. That’s not a good sign. Mmm

I decided it must be us. We must of just selected the wrong dishes. Chef wasn’t quite right that night. We are over picky. Etc. So many people like this place. It must be good.

Second attempt. Entree to share. I had a chicken for main. Hubby had beef. I had the chocolate fondant for dessert.. Thank god I enjoyed the fondant. But there just wasn’t anything in our entree and mains that cut it for us. We were kinda shocked.

In terms of service, it’s gonna be really hard to crack a smile from the wait staff. There was a new staff/ trainee on our second visit. You can tell as he was a little clumsy, but at least he was smiling like a human being. The others were so “matter of fact” and they just didn’t seem approachable to talk to.

So after two attempts, the score is 3.
It’s really more for the fact that it is a established restaurant and are “professional” in what they do.
Food and service : both didn’t get my thumbs up.

Food Junkie
This restaurant is owned by the same chef that used to do the Brasserie at Crown.
Nice comfortable place to dine with your friends and have great conversation without having to shout across the table. The ambience is perfect for a date, just saying 😉
Food is delicious, but I must warn you that the entree is Huge! I would suggest you get a small plate or get 1 entree to share between two people. For main I had the chicken as it is their signature dish. My friend had the steak. We were contemplating of getting the set menu. Lucky we didn’t, because we were struggling to finish our main. We hardly touch the French fries although delicious we were just too full.
They have an extensive wine list from all over the world. They can be ordered in bottles, 250ml or a small glass, which is perfect for those you are like me and don’t drink very much.

Had an amazing dinner with friends here last night. Started at the bar with a expresso martini and then had a wonderful bottle of Sancerre. Oh how I love French wine.
I ordered the chestnut and porcini soup. Only need one word to describe it - delicious. Then the wild barramundi that was as good. So nice to see wild barramundi as there is so much farmed crap around. Dessert was another winner. This restaurant is going to be my new favourite. I can't believe it has taken me so long to find it.

We recently dined at Philippe, a French restaurant by Philippe Mouchel, located in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. We had quite high expectations given his previous restaurant, the Brasserie Philippe Mouchel at Crown was pretty good.

Lovely restaurant with delicious food and excellent service.
Colourful and creative plating.

Service: 4/5
Food: 4.5/5
Ambiance: 4/5

Bonus: $2 Oysters all day

Would I recommend Philippe to family and friends? Absolutely!
Would I visit Philippe again? Without a doubt

Visited for a relaxing lunch with friends. Greeting on arrival was odd, I suspect that our booking was lost (despite being confirmed that day). Decor was ok, bright and white, nothing wrong here, just no atmosphere. Food was fine, thought overpriced for what we got. The oysters were fresh, the steaks were average quality and the fish was good though again, nothing spectacular. Deserts were as expected, chocolate fondant was lovely. What me list was good and I found a well priced red that met the mark. Service was a bit hit and miss. Overall, a fine lunch but not anything that rush back for. Better options in Melbourne for the same money.

The food and ambience at Philippe's is beautiful, each morsel is savoured and prepared with care. We were a group of 10 and were put up in the private dining room. The entree's set the tone for the nights offerings, tasty and plentiful, oysters, snails, pates, plenty of bread, the chatucuarie boards. The mains were the duck, chicken, wagu, etc were fantastic, silence at the table as we were all tucking in, the only comments were how beautiful each meal was ,washed down with plenty of wine. We all were full,, but still room for the tasty, moreish desserts. We love a fancy restaurant that does not leave you looking for Maccas' or a pizza on the way home!! The waiter was attentive but not too intrusive and happy to recommend when asked, and the service was great and Philippe himself popped in to make sure everything was ok!

On side alley off Collins St, the blue & white coq does signal the way.
Delicious food, classic French but with extra added punchy flavours.
Beef tartare, $24, was amazing. Roast duck was cooked beautifully ($120, as you have to order two serves). Lamb was soft and everything on the plate added great flavours, $38.
Service was so-so, often very slow, and a mistake on the bill was met with a lacklustre response.

It was Mr Burberry’s birthday and he wanted to try Phillipe since he’s been hearing great things about it so onward we went for some french cuisine. Phillipe is located on Collins Street tucked away and when you enter the restaurant, you’re greeted by friendly staff and the smell of rotissoired chicken (mmmmmMMMMmm!).
Enjoy It
Despite the restaurant being full and well into its second sitting by the time of our booking, the service was faultless, as were all of the dishes we tried. The quail and foie gras parfait was sensational as were the pastry prawns. We shared the duck as a main and this I would heartily recommend. I am not usually a huge duck fan but with such a ideal cut perfectly cooked i may be converted. Thanks for a perfect evening, always so wonderful (and rare) leaving without a single thing to criticise :-)

I haven't had a lot of French food in my life so I can't really compare it with anything. However, my mum has been to Phillipe multiple times and absolutely loves it! Which is why she took my sister and I to try it out.

The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous. We were situated on a large table in front of the open kitchen. Service was excellent! The waiters were very attentive and friendly throughout the whole evening. We were given complimentary bread and mustard butter for the table. The butter was amazing! I could have eaten the whole thing as it is but that probably wouldn't have been too good for me.

For entre we had escargots, pate and wagyu tartare. I would have preferred my snails in its shell but that's just me nitpicking. Pate and wagyu was delicious and flavourful, no faults. For mains we shared a rump steak which was cooked beautifully medium rare with a bordelaise sauce, grilled lamb rack and swordfish. Lamb was cooked to perfection. Rockling was on the drier side and had a sour taste to it - probably from the nettle but I'm not 100% sure. I still ate it but I probably wouldn't order it again. For desserts we ordered a lemon vacherin and an oeuf Ă la neige. Not going to lie, I had to do a quick Google search before I ordered desserts because I had no idea what these were! (Also didn't want to look silly asking the waiters ha!) The meringue was so light and fluffy, which complimented the tropical fruits. Lemon vacherin looked amazing and but tasted a tad too sour (I just don't do well with sour tastes). We also got a complimentary chocolate fondant because they brought out the wrong dessert first and because I don't eat/like chocolate, my mum and sister devoured it themselves. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. I think it's just missing a bit of a wow factor though.

Very disappointing place. I was expecting a nice French restaurant experience and we had a pricey average Australian dining. Would not recommend. Bistro Thierry is WAY better.

An amazing restaurant with a beautiful interior. I loved the plant wall and the booth seating. The service was very efficient and professional yet also really friendly. The fish was delicious - so rich in typical French style. My partner enjoyed his chicken dish very much. We learned about the 1 oyster special and vowed to come back at the right time to have it ourselves. The cherry dessert was so good I tried to cook it myself and recreate it in my own home! An awesome dinner.
Hungry Sloth
Booked last minute for 9pm dinner on Saturday and the restaurant was available. We decided to go with 3 course degustation menu which was $70 per person ( must be ordered by the entire table). The items seem to be identical to what you can order off the a la carte menu.
Starter : beetroot cured salmon with a side of salad - was quite delicious - a good combination of flavor, salmon tasted like standard cured salmon- not as delicate as some house cured salmon I’ve had in other fine dining places.
Main: rotisserie chicken breast with potato and some possible orange sauce. I never order chicken in fine dining places or like chicken breasts in general, but it was probably one of the most juicy chicken breast we both had. Sizing was also generous. Although chicken is chicken - I don’t think I would necessarily order it again.
dessert : tried both the meringue and the lemon dessert - both were of good standard but meringue with the passion fruit centre was a good ending to my meal.

I also ordered a elderflower lemonade which was an overpriced $12 lemonade with a sprinkle of elderflower syrup- minus some points for this as I really dislike restaurants that charge a gross premium for non alcohol drinkers.

That aside the potato gratin we ordered as extra side was standard - but the complimentary bread with mustard butter was out of this world.

Overall rating is probably 3.75 and rounded to a 4 because restaurant had good atmosphere and attentive staff. We spent $162 aud for the two for above food and drink.
Suburb Review
Service great and attentive. Bread and butter delicious, entrees delicious, mains generous size. Havent tried many French restaurants so have nothing to compare it to. I just wish the snails were served in its shell. That wouldve given it a more authentic french experience.

Came for here for work lunch, the atmosphere is great, good selection on lunch set menu and fabulous wine selection :) the tartare are well seasoned and it can be seasoned according to ur preference :) decent size and good quality definitely worth visiting :)

Thank you for a wonderful dining experience, came here for my partner's birthday. This place felt like a hidden gem. From the beginning til the end I can say that I had delicious meal after meal! The complimemtary baguette with mustard butter was amazing. Beautiful decor with some personal touches, it was romantic and I felt like I was back in France. We had a French waiter who provider good customer service. Prices were really good. I find many restaurants are over priced and serve small portions but this place is all about genorosity. I don't have a standout because we loved all the dishes. We started with spanner crab and sea water jelly oyster. Both so fresh, so good! It was the first time i had eaten oyster like this and i thought it was a lovely surprise! We then had roasted bone marrow and the quail foie gras and brioche which were delicious. I had the chicken which lives up to its reputation and my partner ordered trotters which he demolished. We had fries as the sides and they were crunchy outside and fluffy inside (in hindsight we probably didn't need a side as we were about to burst). Still, we decided on dessert which was oeufs a la neige - beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, a light dessert, not too sweet, not too tart and a perfect end to the meals!

Last week we came here for a birthday dinner and ordered a lot of food because there was 6 of us. We have the bread and butter as a complimentary which I thought was nice, but the bread could have been warmer. For the entree we ordered four dishes in which we shared among ourselves. I thought it was alright, my favourite being the calamari dish. For the main, we each had our own dish-I had the chicken one, which I was thought was nicely cooked.
Emmmma Llove Food
Philippe is a good option for French cuisine. Not like standard French restaurants with tiny portion, Philippe's plates are big! Love the food here.

All my friends love the chicken, as its soft and juicy. And the pork trotter is nice as well. The flavour is so rich.

If you are looking for an authentic good French restaurant in Melbourne, I'm afraid you will still be looking!
My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first (and last) time yesterday.
We had been encouraged by the promising menu and we felt confident when we walked in and saw the decor, which is excellent.
We were met (rather than greeted) by a gentleman who wished us 'bon jour ' in a very Australian accent. He was decidedly not welcoming.
During the evening we actually had 3 separate waiters for our 3 courses, each progressively worse than the one before!
I started with the Quail & Foi Gras Parfait, which I found to be incredibly sweet!
My wife fared better, having selected the charcoal grilled calamari, which proved to be the only decent dish that we experienced.
She followed with charcoal grilled eye fillet steak. She was offered a choice of 4 sauces, but in fact got a sauce that she hadn't requested. The steak was cooked to her satisfaction, but lacked any semblance of French cooking.
I ordered the Tuesday special dish of the day - Charcoal grilled pork rack, which was just bland.
I had anticipated finishing with a good cheese platter, but didn't feel any confidence in getting anything that I might enjoy, so I gave it a miss.
My wife concluded with what proved to be a very ordinary pineapple sorbet.
Where were the wonderful sauces and spices of France? Definitely not here!
This restaurant is not cheap and clearly fancies itself as an upmarket dining experience, which IT IS CLEARLY NOT!
From the bland cooking to the poorly trained serving staff, this was not an evening that we enjoyed.
Good Food Good Mood
In terms of French bistro food Philippe Mouchel is the undisputed king. PM24 was one of my favourite places to dine so I was excited to try his latest endeavour, open for just over a year located where the old Brooks used to be (I still crave their delicious cheesecake RIP Brooks).
The atmosphere is refined and sophisticated and his signature rotisserie chicken was just as succulent as I remembered. Exemplary service renders this the perfect place for date night or a special occasion and don't you dare leave without trying the insanely delicious desserts. For what you get in terms of ambiance, food quality and the level of skill in execution I consider this to be extremely reasonably priced

Nice place for a French meal. Just located off Collins street it provides a cozy and nice atmosphere. Must try the truffle chicken it is amazing!

I love it so much. Excellent environment and service! Super good service ever. Chicken breast so soft and the skin is not oily. Fantastic display even in lunch. At least i m willing to pay this price for them:). the vanilla cream brûlée is a bit like having "paste" , if the texture can be slightly "like curd" will be amazing! Anyway! i love this restaurant so much!!!!!!!
A Black Sheep
What a nice place to dine in. Situated in a basement on Collins Street, this place is so inviting. The staffs are great and frindly. We ordered optopus salad for entrée, duck breast for main and finished with sponge cake with rum. The waiter recommended perfect wine to go with the duck. Optopus salad - flavours well balanced, optopus cooked to perfection. Classic flavour combination of the duck and orange. However, duck could be cooked a couple minutes less but still delightful to eat. The sponge cake was light and so was the cream, not so sweet, great finish of a meal. Highly recommend this place and would come back.

Great ideas with the non-fusion approach and old school french classics but such a let down with its extremely bad execution. You'd think after serving raw fish in a bouillabaisse, the second time around they wouldn't dare. I gave up and just left the raw pieces for the chef. The waiter noticed but only apologies was offered - no replacement, no compensation, nothing. It's not about getting free things - it's about taking the edge off so that the rest of the world doesn't have to know you managed to serve raw fish TWICE from a review.

Best fine dinning had thus far... we've been to Dinner by Heston and Vue de Monde to name a couple but can't help comparing to Philippe! Every dish was amazing, great atmosphere.. I've never felt so comfortable in a fine dinning restaurant, staff are amazing food is unforgettable and value for money.. cannot recommend highly enough.. do yourself a favour and have dinner here!!!

Beautiful! So glad that Phillipe reopened in the city especially after he closure if PM24. Food is always cooked on point and service is always excellent. The roast chicken is sublime. Happy hour oysters make it even better! Definitely a regular place for me.

Great food, atmosphere and service. A rare combination to find all three at such a high level. Wine list and wine matching are unpretentiously superb. Great to see this level of innovation and authenticity in French cooking.

Such warm, friendly, genuine people it's like going home for dinner.

I was so excited to visit Phillipe but the food was such a let down. I had the rotisserie chicken dish but unfortunately it was flavourless and lacking in seasoning. Then my partner had the Flinders island lamb dish but it was once again, lacking in flavour. I think if you want anything worth while, order the seafood platter and the charcuterie board to start. Looking at the positives, their house made terrine was delicious, the charcuterie board was plentiful and the staff were very friendly. This is why I have given a 2.5 rating.

If you are looking for some of Melbs best duck then look no more. The texture of the duck was Devine, I just kept on eating. Every dish hit the spot and I even had room to fit desert

Had an amazing experience at Philippe from start to finish. The interior of the restaurant is not what you expect when you first walk in. The open kitchen just oozes warmth and it's great to see the owner meticulously checking each plate before it is served. My wife and I ordered the truffle chicken which required 24 hours notice. It was the most delicious chicken dish I've had, cooked to perfection. Couldn't have picked a better meal for a Melbourne winter night. For dessert we had the chocolate fondant and the oeuf a la neige. Both were faultless. Great food, lovely service and lively ambience. We've discovered a Melbourne gem and we'll definitely be back!

We booked Philippe Bistro Bar for a special occasion and found it behind a heavy glass door - actually in George Parade - downstairs under the Longchamps boutique which is on the corner on Collins Street.

The French cuisine is absolutely wonderful with next level presentation and flavours. The bread was presented with a divinely flavoured mustard butter. We then had entrees of the seared scallop special of the day and the beetroot cured salmon - both of which were melt in the mouth. We both decided on the waygu rump cap for mains (chargrilled to perfection) with sides of Peas a la Francais (oh my god fabulous) and the parmesan, rosemary fries (wow).

We ordered the special of the day of the souffle for dessert, but as they had run out we opted for nothing else because, realistically, we were too full.

I was absolutely impressed by the knowledge, attention to detail, skill and most importantly passion and humour of all the staff .

The atmosphere was very welcoming, not pretentious - and very comfortable.

We highly recommend the Philippe and will return.

With a city full of fusion menus, from all corners of the globe it's refreshing to experience a little bit of tradition and dine at restaurant that would make chefs François Pierre La Varenne and Marie-Antoine CarĂȘme proud grandparents.

Philippe, a French inspired restaurant, off Collins Street below the Grand Hyatt Melbourne and is the brain child of Philippe Mouchel who is arguably one of Melbourne's finest French chef.

Upon walking through the heavy ornate doors and descending the wooden stairs you are immediately taken to the heart of Paris, as you walk past the fully stocked bar, cheese table and open kitchen you can't help anticipate what's to come.

Both the menu and wine list are extensive, which made it hard to decide what to order. After some internal battles I ordered the wagyu beef tartare, pomegranate, Pommery mustard, horseradish as an entree. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made at a restaurant. This was heaven on a plate, the beef melted in my mouth and the flavours just tripped the light fantastic on my tongue, with just the right amount of spice, which took the dish to another level.

I was in the mood for beef so I opted for the Collinson & Co pasture raised porterhouse , cassis & red wine jus and ordered it rare. This was a beautiful piece of meet and cooked and seasoned with respect. Although it came out medium rare not rare it still melted in my mouth. The addition of the cassis & red wine jus was a perfect match to the perfect dish.

I'm not one for dessert, but the menu just called out and demanded I order one. Michel Cluizel chocolate caramel fondant, vanilla bean ice cream was placed in front of me and all of a sudden my mouth started to water. This indeed was the perfect end to a perfect meal. The vanilla ice cream was creamy and silky with just enough vanilla that didn't over power the star of the dish, the molten chocolate.

The only negative about our meal was the coffee. It was a little bitter for my taste, but with three near perfect dishes who really cares.

If you want to eat a good French that the place to be !
Food is fine and tasty the way you expect it from French cuisine. Service is outstanding and an amazing wine list !
We love it !
Well recommended

absolutely wonderful dining experience right from the reservation stage ... making a booking was a breeze whether it's through the restaurant's website or through phone ... warmly greeted upon arrival and wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable with pushing you to order more food or expensive drinks ... tried 2 mains ... rotisserie chicken and lamb rack ... both were done to perfection and finished with 2 desserts ... will definitely return

Perfect Cocktail by professional Bartender Jonathan. Great service!!!!!. Nice food and good presentation. Absolutely go back again. Highly recommended.

Greeted at the door and walked through a beautiful dining room. Service was amazing. Not pretentious , smiles and great menu knowledge start to finish. Food was next level cooking! The lamb rack was ridiculously good. So so tender. Saving my pennies to go back very soon!
Dinner Out
Best French food in Melbourne.
Can not get enough of this great place.

Classic French fair. Everything was cooked perfectly and the service was attentive. It lacked a wow factor for me. Wine list, especially the Australian wines, pretty limited and average. Staff seemed more concerned with up selling than providing an experience. These are small gripes but when you are dropping 300 clams on a meal for two you want to walk away with a bit more of a lasting memory then I did.

Went to Philippe last night for my birthday dinner. Had a lovely night but there were a few negatives.
Positives- the quality of the food. I ordered the wagyu tartare with horseradish cream for entree, the rockling with fennel purée and spinach for main and the chocolate and caramel fondant for dessert. The tartare was delicate and I loved the combo of capers and the horseradish cream. The rockling was delicious and perfectly cooked. And the chocolate fondant had a brilliant oozing centre. The venue itself is also elegant and an open kitchen is always a winner in my books.
Now on to the negatives- we had an 8:15 reservation but when we arrived on time the girl unapologetically told us to leave because our table wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. Wasn't very impressed with that considering we had a booking. There was also a mix up with our order. Our table ordered two tartares- I asked to have mine mild because I don't have a great chilli tolerance. However, my dining companion ordered hers spicy. But after three times of me asking the waiter if he was sure that he'd given me the mild I still ended up with the spicy. It was far too hot for me and unfortunately really affected my overall enjoyment of the dish. I also felt that the meals came out a bit too fast. Kind of got the sense we were being rushed even though there was no need given that we had the table for the rest of the night.

This place has been on my list for yonks! Finally got to go here for a birthday dinner and it was definitely worth the wait. Menu was small but all dishes were done very well. The duck main was absolutely the best duck I've ever had - it was one of those dishes you never wanted to finish because you'd be sad when it was all gone. Will definitely go back to eat the same dishes over and over again

My second visit to Phillipe and it was as amazing as the first. The service is impeccable and the food is divine. I had the rotisserie chicken which was perfection and the fries are another level.
Such a beautiful restaurant and ambiance and to see Phillipe Mouchel on the pass and also meeting & greeting was such a delight. Its a YES from me!
Krill3Ways
Walked in off the street because of the sign in front promising cocktails and cheese. Expected a bar, but walked down into a gorgeous restaurant (that we were completely underdressed for). The waiters were still lovely and we got some amazing cocktails and a cheeseboard to share at the bar on the side of the restaurant. Some great flavour combinations in the cocktails; raspberry and champagne, vodka/cucumber/citrus, coffee/chocolate/cream, gin/rosemary. The cheese selection was great too. Not bad for a spontaneous find!

Since the exciting news earlier this year that Philippe Mouchel was back, I've been waiting for the perfect occasion to dine at Philippe and tonight was the night. As you walk down the stairs into the restaurant, you are greeted by the sight of the rotisserie and meats - indeed, the decor and atmosphere is classic and quintessentially français.
I was absolutely impressed by the knowledge, attention to detail, skill and most importantly passion of all the staff - from the person greeting us at the door, to our waiters for the night and of course Monsieur Mouchel himself. Despite a busy Friday night, he took the time to greet and talk to every single diner at every table throughout the night - it may seem like a little thing but it certainly added a great deal to what was already an exquisite evening. It was lovely to also see him looking over everything to come out of the kitchen and add a little touch of finesse here and there, as well as serving guests too! As for the food - divine as usual! The beetroot cured King salmon was a particular jewel of the menu, as was the chocolate fondant! Every dish was perfectly put together - not only a delicious meal, but a piece of art as well. I cannot speak highly enough of Philippe - surely one of the gems in Melbourne's ever-growing dining scene.
Nibble And Wander
Philippe, a little hidden gem! French, one of my favourite cuisines. My partner once tried their famous chicken rotissoire a long time ago, and one spontaneous night he decided he was craving some expensive chicken haha A beautiful, romantic restaurant and I loved the decor at the entrance. Service was on point, super friendly, knowledgable and attentive staff. Food was absolutely amazing, most immaculate tender chicken breast ever (of course for that price), the skin was stuffed with mushrooms and it brought so much flavour to the chicken breast it was superb. What a memorable night. The snails, de-shelled, were good but I found them a little too salty.

I was so excited to try this place out and booked 6 weeks in advance but I was made to feel embarrassed and humiliated in front of friends.I don't claim to know about wines but when the Australian waiter (a wannabe French waiter more suited to the pompous unfriendly atmosphere of France-soir) asked what I wanted to drink I replied the Bordeaux (Sauternes) not realising it was a sweet dessert wine (Urgh do I really have to serve these people??). Well he made everyone realise how ridiculous I was and so I quickly said "Pinot noir". (You stuuuuuupid woman!!!)
He immediately told me that if in fact I wanted a Bordeaux then the last thing I would be wanting would be a Pinot Noir as it's nothing like the same wine. (Scum!! Scum!!! You don't deserve to be in this restaurant!)
5 minutes in and totally put off the place. From that moment on I think we were considered as commoners and had to ask for things such as bread & water (yesssssss I'll go get you some if I must) which was being handed out to everyone. Food was good but I can't remember what I had apart from this embarrassing incident.
After speaking to friends they said they couldn't understand why the Sauternes wine was put on the red wine list and also why it wasn't on a dessert wine list. I was never so rude to point out (but will do now mwahahahaha!!) that the Oeuf Ă la neige had the accent in the wrong direction on their website.
I will not be back, weirdly I prefer friendly places that take their time to chat and have fun with you.

What a fancy little French place! I took my friend here for his birthday. If you want a reasonable hour to go for dinner, book at least a week or two in advance. I used Philippe's online booking system on their website. It even messages you prior to dinner just to double check.

As a whole this place is delightful. I felt slightly out of place, only because fancy isn't my forte. The waitstaff were polite, however spoke really softly. I did a bit of smiling and nodding.

Our food was incredible. Yum yum yum!! You can watch the chefs hard at work from the dining area and the restaurant is immaculate. I had the porterhouse and my friend had the chicken breast. I also had a cocktail which was delicious, however my glass had a lipstick stain still on the glass from a previous customer....damn that stay-proof lipstick. However when I flagged it with the waiter, it was quickly changed over with very little drama.

My friend recommended the dessert with the Spéculoos in it. It wasn't my first choice, but I was trusting his judgement. It came out and I hoovered in true style. So delicious.

Overall it was an amazing experience. Definitely a great choice for a fancy dinner or date.

I created a Zomato account just so I could post this review as ever since finishing dinner at Philippe last night to say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

I had been keen to get to Philippe since it opened not long ago so much so I decided to book a table for my birthday dinner, the 7 of us sat in the private dining room.

From the get go it was lacklustre to say the least the ambience was dull, Intense bright lighting..Kanye west playing in the background..it just didn't have the elegance and charm of other institutions like France-soir or Bistro Thierry.

Our first round of beers ended up on for table/floor although an accident and not the gentlemans fault it just added to a very average dining experience.

The service was painfully slow even though the restaurant was half full, we were constantly having to top up our own glasses.

The food was average..the steaks for the price we paid and the lengthy time it they took to arrive at the table were overdone and basically cold. With little sauce, a tasteless purée and polenta chips which looked rather unsightly and didn't taste that much better.

It's a shame to have to write this negative review as we were all very excited to come and dine at Philippe..the odd slip up and a wait for food wouldn't bother me or most people generally but for the price you pay you expect a level of service/food but it definitely did not reach expectations, not even close.

Although Africa was lovely to deal with over the phone.

Shaun
Fantastic experience, from start to finish. Started with the foie gras, followed by a succulent wagyu steak, and finished with an incredible oeuf a la neige. Immaculately coupled with French wines and excellent service, amazing!

Happily the trend to dainty little plates of food is over. This restaurant epitomises food you really want to eat. It's hearty and yet prepared with sublime attention to detail.

The space is great for focusing on your dining companions (because there are no windows!) A great place for a meal on a cold night.

Service when we were there was excellent overall but there was one rookie waiter who appeared to be in training and was comically nervous, mucking up literally everything. Supervision was good enough that all his mis-steps were immediately fixed. By the time you go he will have shaped up or shipped out, I am sure.

We got away for about $100 a head, having appetizers, mains, sharing desserts between two, with wine.

French cuisine seems to be experiencing a bit of a renaissance here in Melbourne and I love a good French classic. I dined at Philippe on a Monday evening in the company of two fine ladies for a catch up over some good food. Service is pretty exemplary and a little on the formal side but as refined ladies(!) we don't mind a bit of polite formality. Philippe feels classy and sophisticated and certainly has that je ne sais quoi that makes it tres chic.

The best steak in Melbourne. Truly the world standard steak. Oysters are also creamy and thick in taste. Never had this kind before.
Service is excellent and lovely atmosphere.

My fiancee and i were big fans of PM24 and Deja Vue, so it was only a matter of time before we dropped past Philippe to give it a go.

The restaurant is very beautifully appointed in its tucked away location off Collins st. The bar, upon entry, looks fabulous and would be great for a cocktail prior to dinner. The table spacing (as noted in a review below) was very generous allowing for a very intimate dinner. From the moment we entered, service was outstanding.

For entree we shared Oysters and the kitchen charcuterie selection. Both were very enjoyable, with the Oysters in sea water jelly being a particular treat! For mains, i had the beer braised beef cheek which was perfect. The dessert, a chocolate caramel fondant, was also to die for!

The whole night was a wonderful way to spend our anniversary and we will definitely be back! Sooner rather than later

Amazing food and service, great value for money. Chef Philippe Mouchel never disappoints. I have been waiting since the closure of PM24. If you are after classic French food, this is the place to be.

A pricey but excellent restaurant. A fairly traditional menu. I had rack of lamb which was excellent. Only disappointment was the Oefs la Neige. Service also impeccable.

I think dining here is a bit like going to see an orchestra perform the classic symphonies. It's not hip or 'on trend', but you soon remember how much skill is required to execute at this level night after night. I walked away feeling appreciative.

All I can say is WOW! We visited Philippe for a special occasion and we were completely blown away by the food and service! This is one of the best dining experiences we have ever had and we will be back! Thank you to Philippe and his wonderful team for making our special night even more memorable.

It does not get much better!

Philippe’s is an ultra high quality French cuisine based restaurant, of which Philippe Mouchel is the proprietor and head chef. In my opinion, it is amongst the very best Melbourne. A total delight to dine here and especially to watch Philippe at work in the kitchen!

The very most important trait is to me, the quality and freshness of the food presented - and Philippe’s is beautiful.

It is a very handsome restaurant, very tastefully decorated, in very traditional decor The tables are spacious and the seating most comfortable. The restaurant is very busy, sufficiently quiet to allow private conversation, and thus well suited to business, celebrations and intimate dinners. It is a very pleasant place to have dinner.

And so to dinner. I was with my usual quarterly dining group so we set about a meal of elegance. We all tried different entrees - Oysters, Pate en Croute and for me, a Quail and Foie Gras Parfait, which was excellent. Yes, my two dinners companions spoke in glowing terms of theirs.

Mains were steak - two Porterhouse and one fillet - all cooked perfectly to the diners requirements. This was excellent steak and amongst the best I have tried in several months - beautifully served, with a side of crispy chips - superb indeed. Cannot compliment highly enough for their attention to detail.

Desserts are stunning, one Fromages, one Oeuf a la Neige, both again reported as superb, and for me a Citrus Almond Blanc Manger - just a sheer delight to eat - wonderful textures and flavours.

As you would expect with a restaurant of this quality, the wine list is extensive and well chosen. We enjoyed a John Duval, a great wine. Also desserts were washed down with a Tertre du Lys d’Or Sauterne. Heaven in a glass!

Service is very prompt and super efficient as I expected from a restaurant by Philippe Mouchel, staff are very friendly and helpful.

It is not surprising to find Philippe’s is a very busy establishment. This means you need to book and to arrive on time for your table.

Pricing is very reasonable considering the standard of the meal you receive. In short, this would have to be my amongst my top 5 Melbourne restaurants and is now a definite “go to” restaurant lunch or dinner.

Happy to go there anytime!

We had dinner at Philippe one weeknight. The fitout is familiar as not much has changed since the Brooks days (I do desperately miss Nic Poleart's food). We were looking forward to dinner as we greatly enjoyed Philippe's PM24 a few years ago, and were not disappointed at all. The food is still very very good. The escargots, which were tender with a good balance of garlic and herbaceousness. The cured King salmon starter was raved about.

The rotisserie chicken is still the best bird in town. Our lamb rack was devastatingly good, beautiful produce beautifully cooked. The duck special comes in two stages: a wonderfully cooked duck breast with silky jus, followed by a slightly too salty duck confit with potato foam. The duck special is incredibly generous in serving size, and seeing that the duck breast was superior to the duck confit, perhaps that would have been sufficient.

Dessert was also very good. We had the chocolate fondant, which was textbook perfect. All gooey and rich in the centre. We also ordered the citrus dessert which was elegant and refreshing, perhaps more appropriate than my greedy choice of chocolate fondant after a rich meal!

As a very big fan of Philippe Mouchel previous restaurants i was very excited to see back in front of the pass. We entered and were greater with very friendly service. Sometimes fine dining service although friendly can be stiff but not at Philippe. Smiles and laughter on entry. We sat down in a beautiful dining room with clear view of the chef at work. We loved the oyster and charcuterie bar, everything was so fresh. Main course was a cooking masterclass! Rotisserie chicken was simple and amazing. The rockling was on another level. Just stunning. You get what you pay for. Super service and amazing modern/classic french food!

I saw the hype for this restaurant and was a bit discouraged by the rating initially. Did some detective work and only to find a diner (hater) screwed the ratings. So... Believe the food, not the rating here. *Zomato can you fix it up with some weighting on the scores?*

So I came here for lunch and of course had their famous rotisserie chicken. Well believe me, it was utterly amazing. Chicken was unbelievably tender. Like... Unbelievably tender. Perfect seasoning and jus tasted fantastic.

The beef cheek too was fork tender. Although it was less amazing than the chicken but it was too better than what I expected. The glass sugar was a fine touch to the garnishing. Great dish.

Appetizers were no disappointment. The carpaccio was light and refreshing while the liver was well prepared. Didn't taste like.. Ahem..
They were light and prep our taste buds well for the mains.

My apologies for the backwards review on the dishes but I couldnt wait to tell on the chicken.

Fantastic restaurant.

Great night with a few mates for dinner and were treated to the private dining room. The food we had was excellent - highlights for me were the duck special and the pate en croute. Hope to be back again soon.

The environment: 5/5 experience watching Philippe himself passionately looking after the operations of the restaurant all night. The place/decor had a cosy homey feel which matches the food very well. Only tiny draw back was waiter was a bit pushy trying to get us to order more when we had already ordered the amount of food even when we had already over ordered.
The food: Loved the chestnut soup. Such a unique and beautiful flavour!
The truffled chicken was nice but lacked that wow factor for me.
Tried all desserts but the fondant. All were an exciting combination of new flavours and very pleasing to look at.
Definitely will be back to try the other dishes!

Excellent service with knowledgeable waiter. The owner greeted us as we were ushered to our table. Oysters were fresh, the escargot delish and the porterhouse was perfectly done to our request. Dessert was beautiful. The choc fondant oozes with thick luscious chocolate sauce and the poached apple was down beautifully

We started with the charcuterie platter - enormous and with a wonderful range. Sensational air-dried beef and local salami, rillettes and soft prosciutto. The steaks were perfectly cooked and came with polenta fries that were crunchy but soft-filled. Regrettably too full for dessert but would have headed for the chocolate moelleux... Will have to head back as the desserts on nearby tables looked beautiful.
Importantly, Mouchel is on deck and running a happy team while finishing the dishes before they head out to the dining room.
Bustly atmosphere but not noisy, so conversation was easy. Bilingual staff, a lot of smiling going on between staff, a happy place.
The menu is not enormous but has good variety. It even caters for vegetarians (unlike many French restaurants). After living in Lyon, this really worked for us - delicious!
An excellent dinner and a wonderful find.

Food and service was good but not great, prices are pretty high for standard French food. The decor itself is pretty boring though, very 1990s. Couple this with the 50 year old corporates dining on expense accounts and you get a forgettable experience.
Boccadellaveritas
Philippes is a ok restaurant with the accompanying service, ambience and wine list housed in the old Jamie Oliver's 15 locale opposite Il Solito Posto
Good but not great food and very expensive for what it is. No real complaints except the price v quality equation is favour of the owner not the client

Excellent French restaurant by our world's renowned French chef Philipe Mouchel! Featured on Herald Sun as Melbourne's best French restaurant and highly recommended by Gabriel Gate. Newly opened, replacing Brooks at Collins st, Phillipe offers awesome chef hatted quality dishes. Absolutely loved their charcuterie board and signatured rotisserie chicken breast. I love chef Philippe, humble excellent cook and very friendly.

Philippe is a brand new French restaurant in the heart of Melbourne, which has taken over the space which once belonged to Brooks of Melbourne. The establishment is spearheaded by French chef Philippe Mouchel, which lends his experience from many previous Melbourne restaurants such as Deja Vue and PM24, as well as his training under one of France's most well known chefs, Paul Bocuse.

Came with friends last Saturday evening, the experience was excellent. I love the Escargots the most, the green parsley crust and tomato mint with parsley garlic butter on the top of the snail, this perfect match I never try before, very special and delicious ; my friend liked the wagyu steak, he said that's the best beef he ever had; and Chicken is the best. I like the French cheese with the yummy risotto also ; Everything was perfect; it was a lovely night .

Just it was hard booking on weekend, will come next time again, and high recommend.

Bad service, careless and rude waitress. Normal food, ugly plates, extremely narrow space. Never come back again! We booked for 56 people and when we fully paid they squeezed us into tables for 32! Forced us to share entries with unfamiliar people, yes, 56 people share 32 people size entries, but still charge full price! Very disappointed! The only 1 point for quite good toilet. At least we don't need to share toilet with someone else!

Opened just in time for a special occasion dinner! We had the chestnut velouté, chicken and eye fillet plus chocolate fondant and almond blanc manger for dessert.

The chicken was the best chicken I've ever had and the beef was the second best I've ever had. Chestnut velouté was very good too. The desserts weren't overly exciting I'd say. The fondant was the better of the two we ordered.

Because we said we were sharing the food, they portioned our entree and mains into separate plates which was nice.

I felt lighting was just nice despite a couple of reviews saying it's too bright. Service was ok - I felt we received a bit less attention perhaps because we didn't order wine? We had to ask for water and bread to be topped up although the table next to us had the waiter coming to ask them if they wanted more bread and automatic water refills.

We were lucky enough to snag the last two seats on the second night of service which were the best seats in the house - the kitchen bar.
I was convinced to try a bottle of 07 vouvray despite my insists that I hate older white wine and was blown away by how delicate abd absolutely scrummy it was.
The night only got better and better as each course continued to impress. I began with an entree of beef tartare, surprisingly light and fresh and served alongside a beetroot consume which was simply devine.
For mains I had the rockling and shellfish rouille which was kind of like a deconstructed bouillabaise.
In true French form the bread and butter were of course perfect
We finished with a floating island which visually looks a little bland in all its shades of white but was one of the most delicious desserts Ive had in a long time... an egg white souffle resting on a praline in a pool of the most delicious creme anglaise. A perfect ending to an absolute triumph of a meal.
Incredibly well priced for the quality and service of the meal. I cant wait to go back.

What a treat. As a rule, French is generally one of the last cuisines I lend myself to, as I find it too rich.
Chef has definitely changed my opinion.
The consommé that marries the beef tartare is elegant and visually beautiful. The beetroot colour of the soup glimmering with the gold delicate oil from the broth. The horseradish cream on the tartare just beautiful.
The terrine great, pockmarked with pistachio encased with pastry. Probably my least favourite due to the texture of the case.
Mushroom soup with chestnut should be the signature dish. Veloute foam heaven.

Beef main was complimented with the best potatoes ever!
I'm not going to lie. I ordered this dish solely for the bernaise. Not disappointed
My partner did a last minute add on order of pomme Frits dusted with Parmesan & Rosemary . Seriously good!
Some cheese as a precursor to a fantastic chocolate and cherry dessert.

Chef mans the pass, is elegant, humble and in power.
We sat at the kitchen bench and watched his team work as one which is nothing less than impressive in the first week.
Front of house staff were great. I anticipated stuffiness but was rewarded with a very personable team.

I agree with another review in regards to lighting. Tad too bright.
And yes, everyone talks about PM's rotisserie chicken.
I watched well over 60% of mains sent out contain his legendary dish.
Me, maybe next time, but I'll be hard pressed not to repeat every dish I had last night.

Beautiful thoughtful food in a lovely if a little too brightly lit environment. The food was really perfect, the staff seemed little nervous but very friendly? Opening nerves I guess. We shared the prawns, mushroom soup and pate to start all were definitely something we would order again especially the prawns. The chicken here is a special treat, so moist just perfection and the fish was lovely also. We will put this one on high rotation!

On a freezing night we entered a beautiful warm dining room where we were greeted by friendly service and Philippe himself. The food was stunning. We shared starters and entrees so we could taste a few things and everything was great. Main and desert was so tasty will be back for more!!!
