Review A Hereford Beefstouw - Melbourne

j c
Came here for Valentine’s dinner. Pretty good value meals with quality meat. My starter (the croquette) was a bit cold when I received it but flavour was good. The kitchen was busy so not a big fuss there. Steaks were super generous in portions and sides were delicious. Fresh hot chips and a nice pear and rocket salad. Dessert on offer was great. No picture unfortunately but if the sticky date pudding is on the menu, get that one :)

Hands down my absolute favourite steak place in Melbourne! The steaks here are always cooked to perfection. My go-to is always the 100 day dry aged steaks with the surf and turf - you can't fault it! Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good quality steak!

Significantly below expectation. Both of the steak and sause are tasteless. The meat is not juicy and doesn't taste like it has been properly grilled. On the other hand, the chips are really good and the service is okay. I think I will have better enjoyment having a steak in a pub than in here both for food and price.

Beautiful venue and furniture, minimalist, clean, and best of all no music! Our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the coleslaw and the rye bread was to die for. Service was great too, very attentive and polite. Thank you guys! It was my Partner’s birthday and he was thrilled! We will come back for more memories.

An absolute must try for those who love quality meat. We ordered the tomahawk to share and it was carved table side, such a great experience to those who love their steak. The side dishes were average however, and the service of one of our waiters was a bit standoffish but the energy of the restaraunt and the quality of the steaks more than made up for it. Will definitely come back here with friends for special occasions.

One of the best steaks that I’ve ever had in Melbourne, pepper sauce was good as well. The table service was excellent. (And somehow I love the wooden dining table, it’s smooth and clean :D ) Definitely gonna come back.

I was excited to come try the 100 days dry aged steak as I have tried 42 and 60 days dry aged steaks, each adding more funk to the flavour profile. The 60 days dry aged I tried had a delicious blue cheese flavour to it so I had high expectation for 100 days. Unfortunately the 100 days ribeye did not meet those expectations. The steak was tender and juicy but there was no funk. It had that familiar "beefy roast beef" flavour of dry aged but I'd say this experience was no different to a 42 days dry aged steak. I also tried the steak tartare which was good. Overall the steak was perfectly cooked but for $100 I was expecting a lot more flavour.

Probably one of the most overrated steak places in melbourne . I don’t write negative reviews about restaurants that I’ve been to because I’m conscious of how much this can impact a business . But this was an extremely poor dining experience and I had to tel someone I was really looking forward to our evening at the Hereford Beefstouw. Me and my partner had booked a table on Saturday night based on positive reviews from a friend . And this turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in a long time . We were made to wait 1hour 35 mins for the food. This wasn’t the worst bit. I ordered the rib eye steak and it was possibly one of the worst steaks I’ve had. It was over cooked and dry . And rigid . Rib eye steak a 2/10 . (Worst I’ve had) Restaurant and service a 3/10 Never going back again :)

We went to this restaurant last night while on holidays, we were very disappointed. The chips were cold and had brown/Black bits all over them (you know the bits you usually cut off) unsalted and to be honest McDonald’s have better chips. The red cabbage and bacon side dish was cold, gluggy and the bacon bits were raw. This dish was not of chef quality. Now we get to the steak, for the price it was the biggest disappointment, I returned my eye fillet in which they happily made a new one and provided this dish free of charge. Sauces were watery and tasteless plus cold.Everyone else wasn’t brave enough to actually complain. Wait staff were great! The food needs work, felt like were eating hospital food.

We had a great experience...loved the food...best steak we both have ever eaten...I dont think we left anything at all on the plates, I remember thinking i could have licked the plate lol..I wouldnt but the flavours were simply delectable...cocktails were amazing and wait staff were so lovely...all in all we had the best night we could have asked for...you should bring your restaurant to the Gold Coast...it was truly so lovely eating Danish food again.

First time at this restaurant for a 4 course degustation menu that showcased their steaks & mutton and fine wines from Yangarra. We had a delightful evening, enjoyed all the food and drank all the wine on offer. The wine options for non red drinkers were limited to one glass of white with the appetisers as the others courses were accompanied with red wines - one glass with each course. The hosts were knowledgeable and entertaining. The ambience, decor and wait staff were all lovely and it would be worth returning on a regular evening just for the experience.

Great choice of steak, wine and desserts. Service great. Not pushy which I like. Not sure about the steak being served on metal plate. Also some more choice of sides eg mash or garlic potatoes would've been nice and maybe include some veg on the plate giving the price of the steak. Overall I still rate this a beautiful friendly restaurant. Still relatively new so hope next time I go they have fine tuned a few things. Thankyou.

We went on Sunday night. The staff were wonderful. The Princess Mary cocktails were a winner. The 45 day aged steak was cooked perfectly and it was delicious but the stand out for me was the salmon entree. Hands down the best I've ever eaten. I have a feeling that whenever I'm back in Melbourne there will be another visit. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great new steak house, food is absolutely amazing, the 100 Day aged rib eye is must for all the steak lovers out there! Staff are a little green but very friendly and helpful, desert menu is great as well, creme brûlée is the best! This place will do well!!

I was really excited to go to this restaurant to get a good steak. So on Sat 03.06 I finally went, inviting some good friends of mine. One of my friends is vegetarian and two people on the table ordered fish. Fish is baby snapper( the only option on the menu), one was a good size but the other was a tiny tiny fish. Im not even sure it was legal to catch it. Imagine the disappointment(and my embarrassment). $40 for a fish which was 15cm long. Service was slow too and it wasn't even busy. I'am so disappointed in this place. Reviews were good and pics are lovely but the whole experience was just not good at all. I will never recommend it to anyone.

Second visit on Sat 24/2. Previous rib-eye (on bone) was superb, so did a comparison with the off-bone. Medium rare and cooked exactly as I ordered. Most excellent! Red cabbage & bacon accompaniment was just "the duck's guts". 👍

This review is based on delivery via UberEats so I can't comment on the fit-out or service but I have been wanting to try this place since it opened. Meal arrived 25mins ahead of scheduled delivery, great! rib eye steak was well rested and perfectly cooked, however exceptionally chewy. My jaw is still aching 45mins after making my way through it. Every inch of the steak was chewy, I'm beyond disappointed. Very generous portions, steak perfect size and ordered bearnaise sauce which I could not taste as a sprig of rosemary on top of the steak took over all flavors. Cauliflower and cheese has a great crisp, cheesy top and the fries were delicious and held up very well in delivery. I'm just so disappointed by the steak. Really the 3 stars are for the cauliflower and fries. While I'm a huge steak lover, I doubt I'll make it into the restaurant for a second round.

Good trendy place down at A Hereford Beefstouw. Very good quality steak, beef spare rib try it out and custom made fork and beef knife.

After having a booking (confirmed) in a french restaurant in Prahran for my birthday, only to turn up and it be closed until 27/1 we were lucky enough to google and find this place literally last minute! The food was up there with the best I've had as were the drinks. Thanks for a great night.

Staff were friendly and attentive. The food was of excellent quality and atmosphere inviting. Will most definitely go back and will definitely recommend the restaurant to others. Had a wonderful night.

Went here for dinner last night. The ambiance of the place was great and very Melbourne tucked down Duckboard Lane. However I was a little disappointed with the food. We had oysters and spicy chicken wings for starter. The oysters were lovely but was very disappointed with the wings and there were not spicy at all! When we commented on this to the waitress she said oh yeah I thought that too! Hmmmm... on to the main were we had the chateaubriand eye fillet (30 min wait which actually was over an hour) was lovely could fault it but the ribs were like slop and very fatty! They forgot to bring on of our tiny sides and had to be asked twice! Overall not massively impressed with this one
Renee Carman
The food was delicious. Lovely wine, beautiful setting and decor, sat overlooking flinders street and the arts Centre. Service was great. we asked for steaks medium and one was well done, but apart from that I couldn’t fault the place. Will return.

An absolute must if your a steak lover!! Best food best service great price for the quality

Thankyou for an amazing dining experience - the food was perfect, the wine outstanding and the service exceptional. Will definitely be back, and recommending you to all and sundry. Could not have asked for a more positive experience.

Probably the best steak you can get in Melbourne at this price point!<br/><br/>Steak was cooked to perfection and very tender and flavoursome- 10/10 for the steak!! However Bearnaise was a bit bland and the mushroom sauce was very watery. <br/>Chips weren’t very crispy. <br/><br/>Entrees were presented well- the barramundi croquette was a little dry and tasteless, but the cured salmon was very good. Very small serve of salmon however. <br/>For $20 an entree- it wasn’t too bad.<br/><br/>Dessert range is limited. The spice date pudding was packed with flavour, was soft, warm and served with creamy vanilla ice cream and lots of caramel (which I loved!!). The chocolate mousse was very bitter- not sweet enough for me- but was presented very well and very rich.<br/><br/>I would recommend this place for the steak! A very nice dinner that won’t blow the budget! <br/>

Hidden gem of venue tucked away off Flinders Lane. Came here on a Friday night and was impressed by the variety of steaks on offer. <br/>I ordered the dry aged sirloin steak and even though it was slightly undercooked still delicious. <br/>I had the beef tartare for entree which I wasn’t a massive fan off however a number of sides we ordered was quite nice. <br/>Also the price of wines compared to similar establishments was considerably less which encouraged us to drink more 😊<br/>The service was friendly and attentive.<br/>Definitely worth visiting again.

I’m genuinely at a loss of words about this place. <br/><br/>Squid dish was bland. Potato gratin also tasteless. <br/><br/>What topped it off was that we ordered a medium rare sirloin, the first one came out close to well done, we sent it back, and the second one came as pictured. Not sure how a place that specialises in steak could confuse medium rare with medium-well and then rare-borderline blue.<br/><br/>On the plus side, the ribs were enjoyable.

This place never let our expectations down. Our steak served excellently of how we like it. Value is affordable if you are ready to pay what you want. Superb staff and friendly to our four legged guide dog. We come here always before watching concert shows. Well done guys and more power.

Its a good steakhouse. Anything noteworthy? Hmm... probably nothing to write home about. Would come back with my wife next time though. Great wine selection.
Aadarsh Agarwal
Incredible food, really tasty and reasonably priced. I agree with some of the reviews below, possibly the best steak I’ve ever had. The peppercorn sauce and chips were delicious and we enjoyed the house red wine. It was our last meal in Australia and the perfect choice.
Yoyoyo
we ordered a medium hanger steak but it seems like a medium well to well done steak. teste like a carbon... hard to swallow...... never come back again...

Second time here tonight and Had the rump steak today and it was cooked really well! (Got medium rare). Service was not too bad. Paid 40 dollars for quite a big chunk of meat and was full after.

This amazing place is nicely tuck away . Found out later it had global present. <br/><br/>We prefer the 150 day and dry aged. The extreme beef (100 day dry aged ribeye on bone) was not comparable to other selection . <br/><br/>The staff and atmosphere was top notch.<br/><br/>Photos speak a thousand words ...

Had the oysters at hereford for entrees and we really loved it. It was so fresh and made just the perfect entree
SuziEats
Loved this steak joint. The service was lovely and attentive. The entree must have is the salmon it is so delicious! The calamari was ok not bad but not great. The dry age steak 700g I shared with my hubby. Accompanied with truffle butter and bernaise sauce. Great place great steak

Located within an alleyway within an alleyway (alleyway inception) you can’t get more Melbourne than looking for A Hereford Beefstouw. A lovely open restaurant lay out with the grill in the centre and a nice view at the back of the restaurant overlooking Southbank. We started with chicken liver pate which unfortunately was a little off putting due to the thick layer of fat on the top of the pate. I would have enjoyed the pate more if it was creamier and we had to ask for more bread as the amount of bread it was accompanied with was not enough. The steaks we’re lovely on the other hand, really rich and meaty, cooked to perfection. I also enjoyed the theatrics with the waiter cutting the steak right in front of us prior to serving. The rocket, poached pear and blue cheese salad was tasty and I really enjoyed the potato gratin! The desserts however we’re a little lacklustre. Nice environment and the staff we’re nice enough to remove my drink from the bill because they forgot to fulfil the order until at least 30 minutes into the meal.

Had an amazing catch up with the girls here, nice and spacious tables for a group of 5, could have comfortably fit 8 people on the table even!<br/><br/>LOVE:<br/>🔸The service on the night was absolutely amazing, the steak had come out a too rare which they happily took back to put it back on the grill for a bit longer (came back perfect by the way) and in the meantime they gave us additional side dishes to apologise for the wait<br/>🔸The variety in sauces so every bite could be paired with a different flavour<br/>🔸The mushroom sauce, we cleaned that right up<br/>🔸The atmosphere was darling, low candlelight mood lighting, would be perfect for a nice date<br/>🔸Great chips! Super crispy and lots of flavour<br/><br/>FEEDBACK:<br/>🔹The floors can get a little bit slippery on the way in and out, I almost fell a couple of times and another girl did fall during our meal!

I’d never even heard of this place, but we stumbled across it when walking down a melbourne laneway and managed to get a seat straight away on a Sunday night. It was the perfect atmosphere for a date night. We ordered a couple of glasses of red, to match our eye fillet and sirloin, plus added on the pear salad and potato gratin as sides. We were really impressed with everything! The eye fillet was a standout, so tender. The sauces that come with the meat are very subtle, to ensure it doesn’t overpower the flavour of the meat. The potato gratin also had a very subtle flavour, but was cooked well. My favourite was the salad, the combination of poached pear, blue cheese and rocket was genius! We were too full for dessert, but maybe next time.

Horrible service. Spent a while looking up my booking & the staff was rude and unhelpful. Eventually they led us to a small table at the corner (while the place was quite empty), and no menu has been brought to us- been waiting there and being forgotten for 10mins so we left. Disappointing.
Bella
Great steak place! I really enjoyed my experience here. The steak was cooked perfectly and I highly recommend the 600g T Bone steak as it was very flavoursome! Would definitely come back.

The service was friendly and the place was clean<br/>The steak was well cooked to what was specially ordered.<br/>The serving size was reasonable and the price point seem to match. Enjoy the sides dishes too

3.5 Stars.<br/>Dined here recently at lunch, first time dining here & the restaurant was relatively quiet. Had the Express lunch Menu for $40 which was a 2 course lunch. Chose the Chicken Wings & the Dry Aged Steak. Can't fault the meal. Wasn't mindblowing, but was a good solid steak option. Good value with the express lunch. Service was good too. Would return.

Unfortunately not the best dining experience the second time at Hereford Beefstouw. Although the service, ambience and pricing of the restaurant is admirable and pleasant, the food itself was the biggest let down of the night. At the previous visit, the steaks that were ordered were cooked quite nicely to the temperature we wanted. However, this time the T-bone ordered medium rare came as a medium well to even well done at certain parts. That being said, it was commendable how the waitress then sent the steak back to be redone to the correct temperature and offered a complimentary side. All in all, this dining experience was a far cry from the last visit made in April.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: literally hidden away just like any other great Melbourne restaurant. It is off flinders lane and the vibes upstairs is amazing. <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: no matter which cut of steak I have from here - it always tastes good, cooked to perfection and is always presented so well. Last time they presented my steak on a metal board...interesting! I love the potatoes and their endless sauces and condiments in the middle. <br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: my steak is a little smaller than the norm but it is totally worth the price. <br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: love coming here for steak, staff are nice and ambience is great.

Dined tonight as part of a small group of business colleagues. No mucking around - straight into the eye fillets which were beautifully tender, well seasoned and cooked true to order. A few sides and a good bottle of red. Service was friendly without being over the top. Great night.
Eat Good Melbourne
Tucked behind the alleyways of flinders lane, A Hereford Beefstouw gives off casual romantic vibes. The entrance leads to the bar and the long hallway leads to the restaurant. We came here to try the lobster tail after a recommendation from a friend and got a little carried away with the ordering. Our excitement led to the feast of chicken liver pate, mussels, oysters and a steak each with lobster tail. If memory serves me correctly, we ordered the eyefillet and two lobster tails each (yes we love lobster). All the entrees were exceptional, the mussels were full of flavour and garlic - YUM. Sadly, I left some entree uneaten to leave room for the main course. And with no regret. The steak was tender and juicy and the lobster was meaty and that good kind of fishy. Amazing meal and I wish we had left room for dessert, I guess there's always next time.

Very nice environment, however the seating table are too close, the food are fresh, specially the smoke salmon is my favourite, steak also good. The service are prompt. Overall very good

Had a lovely dinner here with some friends last night. A Hereford Beefstouw has definitely been on my list for the longest time! I had the delicious eye fillet 250g grass fed cooked medium rare and with bearnaise sauce. Unfortunately boyfriend didn’t love his beef ribs and said it could have had more sauce and flavour. <br/>Lastly the spice date pudding was absolutely delicious! It was reasonable priced and a great place for date a date 😊
Bite The Looks By BHA
First time coming here feeling excited to try their rumoured steak that people talked about.. <br/><br/>FOOD<br/>1. Eye fillet steak<br/>2. Rib eye steak<br/>3. T-bone steak<br/>4. Barramundi fillet<br/>5. Gravad lax salmon<br/><br/>Overall, the food was amazing!it was beyond my expectation. I really recommend the t-bone steak. Best of the best - the fat and the meat was all well blend together, so juicy and perfectly seasoned with the mushroom sauce on side. All the steak are cooked to perfection. It was a generous portion given the price range of approx $20 - $60. furthermore,The salmon and barramundi was okay, but just your average fish fillet that you can make by yourself. One more things that also dissapoint me is the waiting game that took almost +-30 minutes to get the food out.. however, the staffs were really attentive and nice. The place and the ambience were nice, bright and warm. Perfect place to chill with friends or family. <br/><br/>Thank you for the experience<br/><br/><br/>#BHAsFoodDiary

Food - great steak place. Great cuts, cooked well but nothing breathtaking. <br/>Had - gravad lax salmon (they slice it at your table - beautiful) + vegetables<br/>- ribs and eye fillet - both tasty and cooked just right. Needed a inch of salt. <br/>Service - fantastic, attentive and helpful but not over the top. <br/><br/>Woul return but not seek out. Solid steak without the wait. Would still opt for san telmo or meat maiden as first pick, especially for the price tag (on the more expensive side).

Had dinner tonight for my first dinner of my Melbourne trip. The entertainment book brought me here to enjoy a delicious New York dry aged sirloin with a side of veggies and a glass of Shiraz. Very enjoyable dinner and fantastic staff
AaronN
Came here with an Entertainment voucher. The steaks here were superb, beautifully cooked, full flavoured and lovely texture. The chicken entree was delish too. Highly recommended (albeit pricey).
All About The Feeds
A Hereford Beefstouw had a nice interior with a relaxed ambiance great for both a dinner for two or four with some friends.<br/><br/>For starters, we ordered the squid which was decent, I liked that they had both the battered/fried and non battered squid but could use more flavour.<br/><br/>For main I ordered the New York sirloin in medium rare with truffle butter as well as the half lobster tail that came with an accompaniment sauce. The lobster was tasty and went really well with the sauce. My steak unfortunately came out quite rare, thinking it might had just been the sides I proceeded to eat further but it only got worse and was practically raw. It was tough and difficult to eat. It seemed too late to ask for another as I had already eaten half so I didn't bother. It was an unpleasant half.<br/><br/>For sides we ordered the ancient grain salad and potato gratin, both were mediocre. The only thing good about the salad was the cherry tomatoes and feta which had the most flavour to the dish. Both sides were underwhelming and lacked flavour and excitement.<br/><br/>Our plates were taken away and I asked for the dessert menu. Waiting for 5 minutes just to get a menu we instead looked at the menu online. Nothing enticed us so we just asked for the bill. I asked the same waiter and he didn't seem to notice that he had forgotten to get us the menu. Overall service was there but lacking which unfortunately made my experience unenjoyable.

Fairly busy for a Tuesday night. Big restaurant and good service to match. Barramundi croquette was average especially for $20. Ham hock was more like a terrine and ok, beef ribs were tender and tasty, little big fatty. Had the hanger which was good and added a lobster tail. Had the extreme rib eye which was a 500g bone in cooked to a perfect medium rare... was $100 but it was spectacular. Potato gratin with a creamy garlic sauce had no sauce but was tasty. Chips were not cooked to order and fairly average. Pretty good overall but not desperate to go back

Went for a birthday dinner with the family on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience.Location, service and ambiance is top notch. Entree and kids meals were amazing with the oysters being a stand out but for $34 for half a dozen they better be.We ordered 3 steaks varying in cuts and aging time. They were cooked perfect but the meat had gristle which you wouldn’t expect in that price range of meat. I appreciate fat on meat but gristle not so much.Overall it’s a very nice place and I will go back hoping it’s just that batch of meat.
Hungry Koala
Love the atmosphere for this place, not to busy. Ordered the dry aged steak and love the sauces that it came with. Would come back to try more.
Jessie
Terrible experience. The waiter is so rude to us. So many flies in the bar area..steak tastes just so so. I am wondering why the score is so high...
Zongjia Chen
Not good experience in this restaurant at all. I go with my girlfriend for our anniversary. We have not been treated well by the waiter here. He spoke very loudly and rudely to us just because we came late for booking. We have to wait in the small bar area to eat our dinner and not access to the table area whole time, which totally ruined this special time.

We decided to go all out at a Hereford Beefstouw. We had the tomahawk steak at 1.7kg medium rare. Lobster tails and sides. <br/>The steak was cooked perfectly MR with a lovely char. Melting in your mouth accompanied with bearnaise. The tails were slightly overdone but still extremely enjoyable. <br/>Considering it’s location the beer and wine is fairly priced <br/><br/>Tomahawk steak was $10 per 100g. We had the option between 1.3 or 1.7 so we went the latter :)<br/>Definitely recommend this place and we will be returning
Amy Flood
I have been here 3 times. Every time I have LOVED it. The steak is always perfect. The side dishes are tasty. The staff are awesome and have very good banter. I’ve had the same staff every time I have been. I’m on the cheeky side but they handle my chat well which I really like.<br/><br/>BEST STEAK IN MELBOURNE. You heard it here first.
Jessica Atkins
I'd probably give this closer to 4.5 stars based on the food. The steaks (500g Chateaubriand) were amazing, so tender and juicy! It was great seeing them being carved at the table. The sauces were good, though the truffle butter didn't taste like truffle. The slaw and chips also went well with them. They had a unique house wine decanter system that was fun to watch. The service started off well, until we waited ages for our plates to be cleared and then didn't get offered the bill. It's much nicer to finish the night on a high, but oh well! I'd go back for the steak alone.
Kayla Nguyen
I was so excited to dine here given its good rating and my love for steak. <br/><br/>Interior was sleek and sophisticated, perfect for a date night, especially a seat by the window. <br/><br/>Service was quite good, everyone was very prompt and attentive. <br/><br/>Food was rather disappointing, the mushroom sauce being nothing extraordinary and the butter tasting like just plain old butter. <br/>The eye fillet was cooked to perfection, however without a good butter accompanying it, it just didn’t wow me which is something i expected given the prices charged. <br/>The t-bone was yummier, i recommend that over the eye fillet just because it had more flavour. <br/>The chips were okay as well. <br/><br/>Overall i wouldn’t return only because i do think it is overpriced for what you’re getting. I know i could get a better tasting steak for the same price elsewhere. Thank you for your hospitality though.

When your overseas friends come to visit and they are asking for proper australian beef. This is definitely one of the place to experience it.<br/><br/>The place is in a beautiful hidden area. Very melbourne. The atmosphere inside is beautiful and very attentive service.<br/><br/>The meat were divine. Melt in your mouth. Cooked with care and high quality.<br/><br/>The sauce was also good enough to drink.<br/><br/>It is on a pricey side but that's just what comes with quality.
Cheryl Wong
Steak is well cooked and taste really good, we added a lobster tail as well. Lobster is one of the best dishes. Most of the staffs are very helpful except a lady who is impatient and not helpful in explaining menu.
Chris P Bacon
Absolutely beautiful dishes with perfectly cooked steaks and a variety of cuts. Service was quick and friendly, would definitely go back again and worth the price, desserts were also very good. A large variety of good quality wines including some dessert optipns.
Cormac
Ordered the medium hanger steak, it came out well done, sent it back and it came out rare. How hard is it for a steak house to get the cooking right? Very disappointed. Also the chips have changed, they used to be fat homecut chips, now they are slightly smaller and very salty. At least I didn’t have to pay for it about the only good takeaway from this place,<br/>I won’t be back.
Renegade
A Hereford beefstouw serves up some great quality cuts of meat cooked to perfection. The steaks we had were so juicy and so tender with very little fat. If I was to be picky I would say the sauces on offer could be improved but all in all the steaks were of a high caliber. There is a decent selection of quality wines to accompany your meal with probably some of the best bottle prices I have seen for a while. The deserts on the other hand were a complete let down and no one on our table enjoyed them. I do not recommend the hereford beefstouw special. Probably the worst single desert I have ever tried. Aside from that the service was good and the ambience was warm and inviting. Definitely Worth a try if your after a good quality steak.
Adam Hobler
The steak was cooked to perfection although the accompanying garlic butter was perhaps a little too fridge cold. Chips were crunchy and nicely salted. The lobster tail was perhaps a little dry but had novelty value. Finally, the dessert tasting platter was perfect a generous serving and the opportunity to taste a bit of everything. They have an interesting contraption for the house wine, which is poured from the top, trickles along Perspex half pipes to aerate, and then into a carafe. Will be back for sure!
The_chic_analyst
This place is suuuuuuch a hidden gem. Ambiance is 👍, value for food is terrific (I've been to most places in the area and this place definitely beats on value) and enjoyed the service. Definitely coming back no doubt.

Had our anniversary dinner here and we were absolutely blown away!<br/>For entrees we had the chicken liver pate & duck terrine. The duck terrine had very interesting elements but was incredibly tasty.<br/>For our main we had the 45 day dry aged beef with garlic truffle.... WOW. First time ever trying dry aged and it absolutely blew my mind.<br/>For dessert we shared the shared platter - my favourite of the platter would be the sticky date pudding with the ice cream & the panna cotta. Both extraordinary!<br/><br/>Great service from the friendly staff as well. Thank you for an amazing night.
Kenny
A dry aged meat lovers heaven. We started off with the dry aged mutton, main event was the unbelievably succulent flavoursome100 day dry aged rib eye topped with truffle butter and a side of luscious lobster tail. Beautifully charred, rare + inside. Every bite delivered an umami packed robust meaty goodness. Standout dessert was the ‘Hereford Special’, essentially a caffeine alcohol spiked sundae. <br/><br/>Thank you Tamara. The Shiraz you recommended drank beautifully. We were looked after so well and cannot ask for more.<br/><br/>
Gavin Gusling
Excellent staff and great Steak, a wide range of cuts and ages. Good sides with an interesting twist. Prices are reasonable and a large wine list also at good prices.
Elsa Lin
Waitress were very friendly. The way to get into there was hard to find, I thought I was went in the wrong way because the road was very poor. But inside and the view was really good. I could saw the river from my window. For a steak, I was not hungry so I think it just well enough. Maybe next time I can try a better one!
LIPP
I would have loved to give 5 stars, as the service and food was pretty good. Unfortunately, our steak wasn’t cooked to our liking... two at our table ordered medium - and received a well done steak :(
Andranik Kazaryan
Went here with a mate, following a read of a zomato review...and wow! Did not disapppont in the slightest. We are both pretty fussy in terms pf our steak but A Hereford Beefstouw ticked all the right boxes. He had the dry aged rib eye and I had the rump and both were cooked to absolute perfection, melted in your mouth. Price wasnt the most cost effective option but great for a treat. Will definitely be back to try the 1.4kg tomahawk steak! Highly recommended for steak connoisseurs

Steak lovers of Melbourne, wander down the cobblestones of ACDC lane to Duckboard place and you'll find a relatively hidden gem.  The second of two restaurants in Australia (the other in Adelaide) and originating in Denmark, A Hereford Beefstouw focuses on high quality (Australian) steak and matching wines on a Nordic style menu, to be enjoyed in a relaxed setting.<br/> <br/>The interior was designed and built in Denmark before being sent over in here in shipping containers.  Designed around an open kitchen and bar, is light and bright during the day (I haven't been at night so I'm not sure of the mood) with brick walls and views of across to the MCG and the iconic Arts Centre from the rear of the room.<br/> <br/>Four of us went down for lunch on a Thursday.  The restaurant was about a quarter full – I get the feeling that this place comes in to its own at night.  Everything we ordered was fabulous – eye fillet, perfectly cooked; plump lobster tails; sides of coleslaw and a salad of spiced pumpkin and ancient grains. <br/><br/>They have several dessert options and we went with the tasting board which was a generous size and showcased the panna cotta, chocolate tart, sticky date pudding, butterscotch icecream and crème brulee.  All of them were delicious!<br/><br/>There are a couple of non steak offerings and a selection of small plates including oysters, chicken wings, Frikadeller and an onion and mushroom tart which I’ve heard is really good.<br/><br/>The only con was that the service was painfully slow.  We had to repeatedly call the waiter over to order drinks, order meals, order desserts and then to get the bill.  We also weren’t offered second drinks after we finished the first.  It seemed that there was only one poor person working the floor, so I’m sure this would be different if they had more staff rostered on.<br/><br/>I’ve given a score of 4 but really I think that 3.5 would be more appropriate due to the speed of the service.<br/> <br/>I’d like to come back for dinner and see what it’s like.  I recommend this for a good steak in the city, especially if you’re not in a hurry.<br/> <br/><br/>

Pros: the mushroom and onion tart.. wow! It was absolutely delicious, definitely recommend. The tart was buttery with the mushrooms, cheese and cute poached quail egg balanced really well with it. Oysters were very fresh and impeccable in any way (with the raw fresh ones being my favourite). Staff are welcoming and I love how they cut the steak infront of you.<br/><br/>Cons: steak was good but not the best. We ordered for it to be medium rare, although understandably it is hard to cook it medium rare throughout, there were some parts of the steak that was very rare.

Came here on a Friday night without a booking with a group of 3 and they were accomadating enough to fit us in. The service was great, as was the decor and atmosphere.<br/><br/>I started off with half a dozen oysters, 3 kilpatricks and 3 baked ones. They were tasty and flavorful. For mains, I had the rib eye 300g, it was cooked perfectly to medium rare. The steak was very tender but it had some tendons which were hard to chew through. My friend had the hangar steak and it was our first time trying it and found it a bit too chewy.<br/><br/>It was a nice experience and I may be back to try the sirloin or the massive tomahawk steak.<br/><br/>Decor 4.3<br/>Service 4.5/5<br/>Ribeye Steak 3.8/5<br/>Hangar steak 2/5<br/>Oysters 4/5<br/>

Came on my own for a 3 course dinner, it's very dim and well spaced between the table will be great for dinner dates.<br/><br/>Mussels - very fresh but I had mine without chilli therefore it taste bit bland.<br/><br/>Surf & turf - I ordered my steak as medium rare and it was cooked perfectly 😁😁 the lobster tail was frozen therefore I can't compare it with the fresh lobster I have from fresh seafood restaurants.<br/><br/>Dessert platter - delicious but too much and too heavy for one 😆😆 the dessert platter is worth trying if you come with company 😊😊<br/>

All I can say is what a steak. Will definitely be back for more. So flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Oysters were fantastic could have had half a dozen per person. 5/5 definitely

First of all service was lovely, staff was attentive however I do recommend booking in advance if you decide to dine here. Ambience was breathtaking with an open kitchen and you can literally see the chef in action. <br/><br/>My partner and I ordered the Cote De Boeuf 700gram ($80) to share with half a lobster tail ($16) along with infinite of sauces and flavoured butter to choose from. <br/><br/>Steak did not taste like it was 45 days aged as described in the menu. Pretty standard and tasted like regular rib eye that you can get your hands on from Costco.<br/>It was under-cook with some bits getting over cooked and some bits that was so rare , I couldn’t even put it in my mouth. But I must add it was a huge piece of steak and it would take an experienced chef to cook it to perfection.<br/><br/>Lobster was a fail, it was so bland and even the truffle butter couldn’t save this boring as hell side dish.<br/><br/>Sauce options are:<br/>- Bearnaise sauce was tangy , sweet and light (meh)<br/>- Mushroom sauce was earthy peppery and salted to perfection (obsessed- tasted like a hearty thick mushroom soup) <br/>- Pepper sauce was spicy and pungent (decent) <br/><br/>Butter options are: <br/>- Truffle Butter was a hit for me loved it was so earthy and paired well with our steak <br/>- garlic butter (did not try)<br/><br/><br/>* bonus image of my friends rib-eye<br/><br/><br/>

4.5<br/>I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to get here. Don’t be fooled by the empty front on Duckboard Place, because that’s just the front bar and the action all takes place up the back, overlooking Flinders Street. Started with the chicken liver pate and chutney which was fantastic. Served with perfect brioche and some questionable (only downer of the meal was the bread) thin bread slices. The chicken wings were as good as wings can get and came with chipotle sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection although the accompanying garlic butter was perhaps a little too fridge cold. Chips were crunchy and nicely salted. The lobster tail was perhaps a little dry but had novelty value. Finally, the dessert tasting platter was perfect - a generous serving and the opportunity to taste a bit of everything. Will be back for sure!

No idea what the restaurant name means, but it is the Melbourne branch of a steakhouse chain from Denmark.<br/>The interior is also designed by a Danish architect, and you can feel the open space and clean lines and wood features, typical of Scandinavia. <br/>Championing Australian Beef, there is a wide range to choose from.<br/>Went for the 45 day dry aged ribeye on the bone, shared between 2.<br/>It was carved on arrival and was perfectly cooked medium rare.<br/>Very tender and flavoursome beef, it was simply paired with fresh horseradish and garlic butter.<br/>A side of potato gratin was also ordered, which was drier than expected.<br/>Bit of a mistake I always make, but I had quite a few pieces of complimentary bread, which was deliciously fresh and exceptional with the butter.<br/>They have an interesting contraption for the house wine, which is poured from the top, trickles along Perspex half-pipes to aerate, and then into a carafe.<br/>Surprisingly smooth and easy drinking.<br/>A decent steakhouse in the middle of the city – you can often find it on specials like Dimmi or Entertainment Book.<br/>Your experience would mainly be determined by the type of steak you order.

Booked a table for 2 for a birthday dinner.<br/>The food was lovely and the meat were well cooked. Medium rare and tender.<br/>We got the 500G Rib eye and 2 ribs with a side of coleslaw and chips to share. Quantity was great and so was the quality. Well worth the money we spent.<br/><br/>The guy who waited our table for drinks was lovely, the girl who took our order was too. However, the man who was looking after the reservations could have been more wlecoming since he is the first person you are greeted by when you arrive. Considering we specified it was for a birthday dinner and requested a nice table, it was a shame to see that they gave the 'nicer' quiter seats to walk ins rather than whose who reserved. We got a pretty average seat in the middle of the dinning area where the waiters are constantly walking past with food and drinks and felt like I was constantly bumping the couple seating behind us due to the lack of space bettween tables.<br/><br/>Prehaps next time we wont bother making a reservation... It may be worth having a drink and waiting for a table.

The restaurant is really nice and dimly lit, perfect for a fancy-ish dinner. We tried the 100 days dry aged ribeye. It was amazing, one of the best steaks around. <br/><br/>We also tried the barramundi fillet. To be honest, there was barely any taste and we were expecting much more, considering the dish costs $37. Tasted very very plain. This is somewhat understandable because the place is famous for their steaks.<br/><br/>The waiter forgot that we did not want blue cheese in our salad and did not bring the sauce for our steak (as ordered).

Wasn’t even aware this place existed until I saw it on Dimmi offer. So glad I booked because our night was great. <br/><br/>We started off with 2 glasses of reds by the glass. A Pinot and Shiraz. We both really liked them. I had the rump and lobster tail. Rump was great but did have a big chunk of fat. My partner had the sirloin which he pretty much inhaled. <br/><br/>We also had the two different dessert wines which we again really liked and finished off with a platter.<br/><br/>Service was very friendly. Would recommend

The tone is set from the outset with service in an unforced and effortlessly friendly style from beginning to end.<br/>The gravad lax salmon starter was superb, my partner much enjoyed the mussels.<br/>Main courses of dry-aged mutton (a first for me - don't be afraid) and slow-cooked beef ribs very much hit the spot. The frenched chips were packed with potato flavour, though the braised red cabbage lacked a spark. <br/>Desserts of Crème Brûlée and A Hereford Special were flawless - the special being served with some nice theatre at the table.<br/>The whole experience was very pleasant with the clean Nordic-style ambience of the restaurant adding to the occasion; food was served timely but without rush.<br/>Both my partner and I left feeling we'd had a great evening. And portions were such, neither of us much felt like breakfast the next day. <br/>

Had my bucks here and the steak was hands down the best steak I had ever had in my life - melt in your mouth stuff......dessert was also awesome and the price is more than justified by the amazing experience. Not much else I can remember from that night but I I’ll definitely be back to this place!

The extreme beef steak i had was definitely extremely tasty 👍<br/>I cant say i enjoyed the salads or sides but all you need is a good steak a good wine and love

Excellent steak! Cooked perfectly, juicy, well seasoned. Sides were also tasty. Service was great. Comfortable restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. Nothing on the menu if you don’t like steak or are vegetarian!
Jimmy The Foodie
This Danish restaurant was a great find and the steaks we ordered were cooked very well. But being a steak house there is not much choice other than 1 fish dish for mains. Good wine list.
Liv
We had an absolutely fantastic dinner experience at Hereford. The dry aged salt bush mutton loin is delicious and the service was spot on! I’d highly recommend.

Dined mid week and tried the T Bone steak which I learnt was the best of both worlds. Porterhouse on one side and eye fillet on the other.  The steak was really enjoyable and the béarnaise sauce really nice.  They do a great surf option on any steak, so the lobster tail was a great addition.  Service was very friendly and the restaurant had a great ambience and decor.  There's a fairly lively front bar also.  The dessert shared plate is one of the best I've had. Really enjoyable and would recommend for sure.

What a treat! Steaks cooked beautifully, carved at the table, by pleasant and knowledgeable staff. Well done! We shared a 700g cote de boeuf with a side of seasonal vegetables and potatoes gratin. To finish a creamer brûlée.
Jonathan Ong
steaks are well seasoned - had the rib eye, and it was excellent. second favourite steak place for me - above la lune but still prefer charcoal grill on the hill. the beef ribs were a bit of a let down, so was the vegetable sides.
Ms_jamscone
We had lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. Lovely fitout, warm and attentive staff and the food was great! I highly recommend it. Great for a date, group or business meeting.

really good experience🤤🤤🤤I would like to recommend this to my friends<br/><br/>the best steak I‘ve had for now in Melbourne and the first one I write review.<br/><br/>OMG,why it needs 140,🤪

Scandinavian steakhouse ? I seriously didn't know what to expect. Overall I was a happy carnivore. The 10 hour slow cooker ribs was tender and moist; the cote de beouf packed with texture and esp with truffle butter just divine; and the T-bone steak was soft and gloriously outlined with fat. The ambiance was a bit Ikea sterile yet the cutlery and plating was stellar. The service was well meant, albeit they seem to be a twinge of nervousness and lack of finesse with staff's carving at the table and delivery. No matter - vikings arwnt exactly rekowned for their hospitality! The food speaks for itself and with quality meat served perfectly like these you really can't complain.
Max
Absolutely incredible!!!! Came her for dinner for date night last night and was amazed at how great this place was. The only thing I would puke say is that the chips weren’t cooked very well but the steak was and the creme brûlée was such an aamIng touch! Would definitely come here again!!!! Recommended for sure!

No. Of Visit: 2<br/>Overall Verdict: A cosy place with very affordable price tag, definitely a fancy-dinner-date place. Wines come in a beautiful variety.<br/><br/>For: <br/>IT IS A BIG STEAK. <br/>I cannot describe how happy when I see the portion of everything, from steak, to entree across sides and desserts. A big attraction - as I always joke "the finer the place, usually the finer the size LOL - but definitely not here! You get the worthy proportion of your money. <br/>Steaks are served on warm metal plates, which scores extra credits. It also feels like heaven when the potato gratin melt inside your mouth!!<br/>It's a very customer friendly dining setup as you can sit at the bar outside with friends for a lovely after-dinner chat. <br/><br/>Why it is a 4, not 4.5?!<br/>Not enough control of wellness of steaks.<br/>First time both of us order "medium rare", one rib eye came out like a "blue rare" (bloody juice everywhere). Second time the "medium well" and "rare" looks exactly the same. <br/><br/>Anything else?<br/>There are only Bèarnaise Sauce or Pepper Sauce or seasoned butter - very limited flavour. This style Bèarnaise really isn't suitable for the steak as it's too fluffy-buttery and sweet but didn't contains enough vinegar and herbs to cut through the heavy taste of the beef.
Anita Gibbs
A beautiful restaurant with the right ambience for a superb, high end dining experience . Loved that I didn’t have to compete with loud ‘background’ music that most places seem to have. <br/>The starters we had - salmon croquettes and meatballs - were small servings but excellent in flavour.<br/>The steaks were out of this world - cooked to perfection and served in round metal plates. They didn’t bleed at all, testimony that they were well rested.<br/>The sides were a bit underwhelming - very small serves and less than single portion size.<br/>Desserts sounded great but we opted for Affogatos. An all round perfect night out for the special occasion we were celebrating.<br/><br/>
Hello. Imnikki
Tucked away in Duckboard Place, A Hereford Beefstouw is hidden away from plain sight. In true Danish style, the interior is all about simple and clean lines, open-plan kitchen and minimalistic design. My friend and I absolutely adored the cut of meat we each ordered - the hanger steak for me, and the ribeye for her. Both medium rare, the meat had a warm red centre, slightly firm throughout and very juicy. The natural flavour of the beef was remarkable, especially the ribeye which had a hint of butteriness to it. <br/><br/>The smoked ocean trout croquettes we ordered for our starters was also excellent. With its crisped outer layer and soft inside, it was delicious with every bite. We also ordered the thick cut chips to share, but that we didn’t enjoyed at all. Soggy and soft, it was saved only by slathering it with the bernaise sauce that came with my steak. <br/><br/>Some waitstaffs were friendlier than others, but overall the casual and relaxed ambiance made for an enjoyable night.

Went here for a friends birthday. Food was ok, nothing outstanding. Had the shed beef share platter. It was a bit pricey compared to other better meat restaurants I've been too. The dessert menu was good. Had the lavender creme brule which was a delight, portion was too big, can easily be shared

I came here for the 2nd time last night and it just keeps getting better and better. The first time I came, the need ribs were a bit fatty. This time there was not as much fat on them and they were amazing. The entrees were delightful and we were so full we couldn't fit in dessert this time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I love coming here to eat. Steak is always cooked to perfection! Never a wrong move here and very solid. Whenever I want to have steak in Melbourne, this is my go to place! <br/>

Came here on a Wednesday night for a midweek steak treat. The meat was cooked to our liking and service was attentive. I love their salad bar as it is loaded with fresh ingredients and tasty salad dressings.

I always love heading down Duckboard Place and visiting yet another great restaurant tucked away in this magical Melbourne laneway. A Hereford Beefstouw, as you would expect, is fitted out in a Danish kind of way, modern, blonde furnishings, slick with a meat driven menu. We thoroughly enjoyed our selection of dishes from the menu and loved the friendly service.

Brilliant steaks, ordered the 45 day dry aged varieties, also very impressive entrees. Friendly staff, and overall really enjoyable experience. Highly recommended.

Me and my wife bumped into this place on one of our walks around the city, now Im not one to write reviews but I feel our experience here was quite amazing.  Walking into the door you are welcomed by a big smile from the hostess, the bar was empty but seemed like a nice space to have a drink but we decided to go right in, we did not have a reservation but she was able to accomodate us, as she walked us in she explained a bit about the restaurant saying that it was danish and specialised in dry ageing so we were definitely curious.  The main dining area is quite big, something you cannot see from the outside, decor is simple but stylish, she explained that tables floor and cutlery were also danish. We were given  table by the window looking into Flinders Lane and proceeded to investigate the menu, wine list is extensive was hard to choose.  We had some oysters to start, very fresh and tasty, then we proceeded to the mains; I had the ribeye on the bone and my wife had the rump....DELICIOUS.... cooked to perfection and the flavour is just amazing. Was not a big fan of the pepper sauce but the bernaisse my wife had was very nice and creamy, we also had some chips on the side and some cabbage, very nice combination of flavours. We were already quite full but decided to share the mixed dessert plate, gotta say the creme burlee is to die for....unfortunately we could not finish the rest but they were all nice.<br/>Overall experience was amazing, service is friendly knowledgeable our waitress made sure we were always looked after, food is on the expensive side but quite worth the money and the atmosphere is just great, will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends, a must try!

Don't waist your time and money. My experience was very average compared to other steak houses. This restaurant won't last long. I could not relax at all the chairs were extremely uncomfortable.

A lot better steak options out there. Disappointing as was really looking forward to it. Best part was the wine. Hope it lifts otherwise it will struggle with Melbourne competition
Luiza Brum
The wine selection is really good but disapointing food. Very expensive for the quality and taste. There are better options out there. I wouldn&t recommend it.

Hidden in a lane, Hereford beefstouw provided a great atmosphere.<br/>Have been meaning to try this place and unfortunately it was disappointing. Below average steak that tasted like I could probably make at home. <br/>We ordered the dry aged rib eye on the bone and the dry aged sirloin on the bone. The rib eye was much more juicier than the sirloin, even though they were both medium. The sirloin was the utmost disappointing steak, you get a thick layer of fat and the rest was really dry.<br/>We both ordered a side of lobster tail which actually tasted better than the steak.<br/>We ordered a side of chips which was delicious, tasted like a bag of thins originals but hot and in a fat potato chip form.<br/>Can't have steak without a sauce. The menus didn't have sauces, so we had to ask about them. Ordered the pepper sauce and it was not saucy at all. Pure liquid, very minor taste of pepper and not creamy at all which was disappointing as well.<br/>Staff were very attentive, however they lacked the skills of engaging with customers, and when they do, it's wrong timing. Smiling wouldn't hurt either. <br/>I can't believe they took the salad bar away, that would've at least forgive about their poor steak selections. <br/>Won't be returning, we have our go to steak places and would rather spend our hard working money at places that work hard for their money too.

Overall experience is absolutely fantastic. Great service. Terrific cuts of meat - I fell in love with the Turffle Butter. <br/>Wine Pick: Chianti Classico 2012

My partner and I are big meat eaters. He had seen this place online and wanted to give it a try. We easily booked online for our next date night. The place looks great, friendly hostess welcomed us at the door and took my coat for me. The dining room is rather small for the amount of tables and you are a bit cramped. Only about 30cm away from the table next to us. We had a lamb entre to share. Really nice flavours and the crispy bacon was really tasty. For our main we shared the eye fillet Chateaubriand cooked medium rare with a side of chips and two sauces. The steak came out and the waitress cut it up in front of us. It was cooked perfectly, I cannot fault it at all. The chips was nice and crunchy. The truffle butter was full of flavor and went well with the steak. My partner also had a lobser side which was cooked really well he said. We shared the warm chocolate brownie for desert which just topped off our night. The bill was very reasonable and we plan on coming back with friends.
Trevor Johnston
I enjoyed the rump steak on my recent visit – it came medium rare as requested and the sides we had were also great. The salad bar has been removed. I have been here once before when the salad bar was present and I have to say I think they made the right move - salad bars belong in the 1980's like Malcolm Fraser in a brown suit on a bean bag.<br/><br/>Friendly and attentive staff and a great Scandinavian setting.
Katrina
Beautiful restaurant with a great atmosphere, great selection of wine with a very interesting decanter for house wine, didn't try this though just looked awesome. <br/><br/>Unfortunately the experience I had was by far below average. My steak (dry aged rib eye on the bone) was requested to be medium rare but came out close to well done after waiting for over an hour after the entrees. The table behind us who were seated 40 mins after us had received their mains before us. Polenta was not cooked properly, it was just a watery and very grainy but the waitress insisted that's how it's supposed to be, can't argue with her can I? <br/><br/>Moved onto dessert and the chocolate fondant was basically a chocolate cake, where's the oozing center? We mentioned to the waitress that it was a bit on the dry side when she asked us how the food was, and again she was so shocked and responded with "Oh really?" and that was it.<br/><br/>On the up side, my partners steak was cooked perfectly and that truffle butter was superb, give us more! Lobster tail was perfectly cooked and those thick cut chips are to die for, amazingly crunch.

Absolutely fantastic, in my top 5 dining experiences in Melbourne. Fit-out is great. Loved the furniture, cultlery and presentation of the meals. Staff were so obliging with a dietary request and just so genuinely pleasant - from front of house, to our lovely waiter, to the manager. Food was sensational and incredibly well priced for the quality and prime CBD location. The chicken liver parfait was smooth and not too liver-y. It had a gentle taste, served with a delicious relish, cornichons and toasted brioche. The salmon gravlax is carved at your table, served with a delectable mustard sauce and thinly sliced bread. For mains we had a dry aged rump and a hanger steak. Both completely different in terms of texture and flavour. Both divine. We both had pepper sauce which was amazing or they will offer you a selection of mustards. The sides of chips and braised red cabbage were sublime. As was the warm brownie to@ finish. The wine list was pretty reasonable. You can BYO but it's $20 a bottle corkage. This restaurant also offers 25% off up to $50 as part of the entertainment book. So very highly recommended.
TheFitFoodie
I surprised my partner by bringing him he for his birthday, i'd seen the restaurant in the Entertainment Book and saw great reviews online.<br/>The service was quick and friendly with a good looking menu... for everyone who eats meat. Now I am not silly enough to take myself as a vegetarian to a steakhouse and complain however I would like to suggest adding an extra dish to your menu wouldn't be harmful. However, this was about my partner, an avid meat eater. <br/>The food was excellent. My partners steak was perfect and I got the Marinated Peppers with the polenta & carrot dishes on the side - amaaazing. <br/>My only gripe the whole evening was the bread - i cannot understand restaurants that serve rock hard butter with bread so it can't be spread. If its a pet peeve of any other foodies just ask it to be heated up first - it was no issue :) <br/>I would encourage any meat eaters to dine here as it sounds superb and I was very happy with my dishes also. <br/>Very pleased with the cost - with the entertainment book disc we paid $100 for 2 entrees, 4 sides, 1 main (steak), the breads and 2 soft drinks. <br/>Highly recommend

If you are after steak cooked to your liking perfectly, this is the place you want to be at.<br/><br/>A variety of sizes and aged beef variety, you will find something of your liking. <br/><br/>It's my second time here and I like the very simple straight forward decor. When one walks in, one goes past a bar area, the kitchen before getting to the main dining area. In the middle of the dining area there is a house wine apparatus, where you can enjoy watching house wine dripping into cask before being served.<br/><br/>Wine selection is plenty, I do not recommend the house wine though. It's nice to watch but definitely not to my liking.<br/><br/>If you go in pairs, you may want to try the set beef for two carved in front of you. The entrees are lovely, especially the tuna tartare. Hand cut chips is a must as side, beautiful. <br/><br/>The dessert was equally impressive, made to perfection.<br/><br/>The service could be improved, or maybe it's because it was a Saturday night. Our order for a drink of coke was forgotten, we were asked if we want sauces for our steak but the sauces never really arrived (half did).<br/><br/>All in all a pleasant get together place if you enjoy good steak and dessert!<br/><br/><br/>

Great food, wine & service. Came here on a quiet Monday night for a birthday dinner. The highlights of the night ware the 700g 45 day dry aged beef which is carved at your table, beef ribs and the meatballs! They also had a fancy house wine and a great dessert platter.

When I had a big meat craving I decided to come here to give their steaks a try. After I had a look of the menu I decided to be a bit adventurous and try the aged mutton with lobster tail and it was so delicious! Probably the best lamb I ever had...well done guys👍<br/>Now I am looking forward to coming back to try their other steaks 🤤

Something always feels exciting when friends bring you into a lane for food. This place was actually quite large. The furnishing is easy on the eye and very comfy. The house wine goes through this machine to decanter. We got a glass just to see the machine in action. But since it tasted nice, we went for more. And there is a Armagnac for the year your born. Another cute thing to enjoy. We tried the aged 45 days beef. Really yummy. tender. Can't even remember what we had for entree, but it was also yummy. I don't remember being over the moon with dessert though. I'm rounding up a bunch of meat lovers so we can try the 100 days aged beef.
Matthew
Awesome food ... fantastic service.... the entree took days to make and tasted and looked amazing. The steak was perfectly cooked .... and the desert was to die for

The Super Tuesday promo that is mentioned here by Zomato is not a thing! Otherwise, the food was nice and the service was very good. Nice interior and pleasant atmosphere.

Amazing hanger steak - but what happened to the salad bar? The hanger steak at $32 is very good value for money considering the quality of flavour. The salad bar/buffet however was the best thing going for this restaurant and it has been removed!! <br/>One of our side orders and desserts were forgotten they were under the pump which is understandable but at least we didn't get charged for them - it's got a very nice atmosphere and delicious food; could improve a bit more on communication to the kitchen and BRING BACK THE SALAD BAR!! otherwise this would be 4.5/5 based on quality of food. Although not cheap once you order sides and dessert :)

You wouldn't expect a small lane to have a place like this. Firstly, I really like the deco of this place. However, I think if they're famed for their steaks, I am slightly disappointed. When asked about the differences of the various steaks on the menu, staff needed to bring someone else to explain it to me (big No No) there. However, the starters we ordered was fairly good. Overall the food was also well presented.
Jean
Value for money! Their truffle butter is so yumz melted on top of the beef. Table seating is great only if you are seated within the window area. Workers there are generally friendly.. with the exception of one of them. Went there twice and she was crazy rude, sadly I didn't get her name though. She really ruined the entire dinner mood.<br/>Definitely order the fries as well. I recommend their aged beefs.

Terrible service. Below Par food. Spent most of the evening looking for a waiter. Dirty plates and drink glasses left at table. For the price, there are much better restaurants to visit. <br/>

One of Melbourne's tastiest hidden gems! I've been here multiple times and they never disappoint! The ribs are absolutely to die for and the staff are super knowledgable and are always up for a chat. Would definitely recommend 👍👍

Well appointed, great atmosphere, knowledgeable and friendly staff, highlight was the Steaks! Aged Ribeye cooked to perfection, AMAZING flavor, entrees were beautiful, all 4 of us agreed we will definitely be going back. Highly highly recommend this as one of the best steakhouses in Melbourne!

With its blonde timber and light and airy feel you can definitely see the Scandinavian influence in this Danish steak house. Great service, fantastic entrees (the fried fish was great) and the steak was equally up to the challenge with a great charred crust and pink centre - some bits were unfortunately over our medium rare order but were still juicy.

I AM OUTRAGED!!! BRING BACK THE SALAD BAR!! <br/>I came to Hereford in its first few weeks of opening and loved it, I loved the concept of the DIY salad bar and the beautiful accommodating staff. As someone who often doesn't eat meat, I find plants to be sustenance so having the ability to make my own salad and re load it as much as I want was fantastic! My boyfriend and I returned a few weeks later! Today I arrived to enjoy a steak and DIY salad to find that they have abandoned the concept of DIY salad, I am outraged!! They now offer 2 piss weak salad options. Want to know why they dismissed the concept of the salad? Because YOU the people dissed the idea. You're happy to queue for 2 hours to get a table at chin chin but having the option to make your own salad and fill it up as much as you like is beneath you? Make sense of that??? I'm so disappointed in the people of Melbourne, who cannot embrace a new concept! The Hereford Beefstouw offers beautiful pieces of steak, nice wine, accomodating staff and a lovely environment to eat it. I give it 5 stars. And please PLEASE BRING BACK THE SALAD BAR!!! Don't let these people influence your fantastic idea. <br/>(PS I have a vegan in my family and this concept saved her when we wanted to come)

Another Melbourne's hidden gem - fairly new Danish steakhouse by the Damgaard family next to Tonka or Pastuso. I love their cozy modern setting, unique cutlery, salad bar and Nordic styled menu. The highlight was their dry aged steak w beautiful truffle butter and housemade bearnaise sauce (so light and tasty!) Highly recommend for any steak lover, and they offer "all you can eat" fresh salad bar too!

Great new Scandinavian steak place that has simple but nice touches in a hip location hidden in the alleyways of Melbourne. Great steak and wine selection. Recommended!

My boyfriend and I went to this wonderful steak restaurant yesterday! Berries and cream is my favorite dish🤡The service here is really nice and environment is pretty good and quiet

First off, great decor and views, the forks were a bit weird, shaped like a skewer, however, everything else fitted with the scandi aesthetic well. Meatballs were a nice starter, the hanger steak, lobster tail and ribs were also excellent, but the desserts are the show stopper, go for the shared plate! Fantastic experience. Also, generous portions, well done.

Loved the dry-aged Côte de Boeuf, loved "The Garden" salad bar. Great choice of cuts as well as a few non-beef items and lots of options in the salad bar. Service was good, other than having to wait too long after we were seated before our orders were taken. The wine list could focus more on robust cabernets and less on the delicate pinots, but then again I am a wine wanker and it comes down to personal preference. Will definitely come again.

Tucked away in a laneway, within Flinders Lane is this amazing steakhouse. I loved the fitout and the relaxed setting, combined with very receptive waiters - this place is a winner. Just a note: don't just try the steaks, do venture out and try the entrees. Can't wait to come back to this humble little restaurant!

Was well overdue for a catch up with one of my girlfriends who specifically requested "A good steak" for dinner. After hearing of Hereford Beefstouw's recent opening and history, I thought it was the perfect place for a good steak and a catch up. But boy, was I wrong.  <br/><br/>It was sensational. Both my girlfriend and I enjoyed every single dish. We started with the mini hot dogs (we actually agreed we could eat another plate each if we were still hungry after our mains) and we each had a steak. The meat was amazing. I have not had a steak like that before and was bragging about it for weeks (my poor partner had to listen to it).<br/><br/>The only thing that my girlfriend wasn't too impressed with was the colour of her macaroons on her desert plate. But even she said they still tasted amazing and that it was more so a colour aversion (I believe they were green).<br/><br/>Cannot wait to come back!

Our steak was perfectly cooked and the selection of fresh vegetables at the salad bar makes for a perfect side, friendly and knowledgable staff recommended wine and guided us through the menu. Atmosphere is nice and cozy, will definitely return.

My partner and I reserved this restaurant for a date night. <br/><br/>ENTREES:<br/>Gravad Lax Salmon - The salmon was beautifully carved at our table and tasted as good as it looked. It was served with a wonderful gravad sauce, which packed a punch. The flavour of the salmon, gravad sauce and bread combined beautifully.<br/><br/>Beef Tartare - This was our first experience of beef tartare. The yolk gave the beef a lovely creaminess and pickles and capers gave it just the right amount of sourness.<br/><br/>MAIN COURSE:<br/>Côte de Boeuf & New York Sirloin - Both dry aged.<br/>They were perfectly cooked steaks with no unnecessary frills. The beauty of the steak was not lost in the cooking process and shone through the meal.<br/><br/>DESSERT:<br/>Vanilla Cream Brûlée - This was a highlight. The serving was large, enough to feed two. The Cream Brûlée was served with a side of honey & lavender ice cream, made in-house. The flavours worked incredibly well together. The dessert was not overly sweet (thank goodness), and was the perfect way to end the meal.<br/><br/>SPECIAL MENTION: To Timothy, our wonderful waiter. He provided exceptional service and was super friendly and informative, working hard to make our experience special.<br/><br/>We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves steak. Great place for dinner.

A Hereford Beefstouw is a fairly new steakhouse, nestled in a quiet lane in Melbourne CBD.   We were a huge group and ended up here for an early dinner. After quickly settling down with their house wine, our friendly stewardess explained the menu to us.   I chose a Cured Lamb Shoulder for an entree, and the suggested main Cote De Boeuf [Ribeye on the Bone]. <br/><br/>While we were eagerly awaiting the entree, our stewardess showed us to 'The Garden' which is a towering salad bar, brimming with some of the freshest Australian produce, along with a wide accompaniment of sauces and dressings.  I made myself a huge bowl full of goodness with as much little dressing as possible, since I wanted to sample the produce as they are and not let the wonderful dressings take over. The mix was amazingly fresh, crispy and crunchy and added the much needed prep for what's to come further. It also took some guilt away of not eating enough veggie goodness in my regular day to day meals. In fact I was done for the weekly allowance of my veggies.<br/><br/>As the entree arrived, I was very impressed with the way it was presented, rustic and top notch. The pictures speak a thousand words (or more in this case), check them out.  While I overlooked the entrees of my friend's, they were presented equally well and I am sure tasted well too. Well, mine was a flavour bomb, such melt-in-your-mouth goodness, just exploded in my mouth. <br/><br/>Two pieces of crumbed lamb, resting on a sea of pea puree, floating snow peas pearls, with scattered mint and other greens, and the crispy piece of Kiser flesh bacon, carefully placed in between. <br/><br/>I am recording this experience as the most satisfying entree I have EVER had in all of my culinary experiences and I would visit A Hereford Beefstouw just to have their Cured Lamb Shoulder, again and again.<br/><br/>But, I do have a little detail to complain, it has to be the portion size. Well I am kidding, it's the perfect portion for an entree and I would have easily savoured two portions as my main.<br/><br/>Speaking of mains, I must confess that I am not a big fan of medium rare meat. I like my meat mostly well done.  However for the Cote De Boeuf or the Ribeye on the Bone, which came highly recommended the chef's recommendation was to go rare, and I was suggested to go with at least a medium rare. The stewardess did promise me that if I did not like it, she will take it back to the chef and make it well done. When it arrived at my table, was taken back by the portion size, it was a huge piece of meat [I was warned on the menu that the portion is enough to share between 2]. After a quick lemon squeeze, I started carving my meat to bite sized portions. I cannot say I enjoyed it thoroughly, but the meat was tender, wonderfully seared and seasoned to my taste. I never sent it back to get it made well done, however I could not finish the huge piece of meat. As per my friend's recommendation, I did nibble the T bone, which is supposedly delicious. <br/><br/>While their desserts looked very sinful and tempting, I was too full to go for them, and made myself a promise that there is always a next time.<br/><br/>Quick Summary - A tasteful place for a perfect dinner with your friends & family, highlights are a towering garden that you can savour and a flavourful entree with a wide range of steaks. Thank You Hereford Beefstouw, for a wonderful memory of the best entree of my life. Reserve me a place, I am visiting again.....soon.

Really looking forward to going here but a lot was lacking at this place. Had high expectations due to the pricing but it totally missed the mark. Service was ordinary. Staff didnt understand the menu very well, they forgot the oysters we ordered, they couldnt tell us what cocktails were in offer and some of the steaks that were ordered came out lukewarm - even the butter didnt melt at all when placed on top of the steak. Also the pepper sauce was all watery, it didnt look or taste right. Wouldnt recommend this place especially given the high prices, expected a bit better.

A small alley, but a small gem in Melbourne. Quite a small place for a fine dining style, but nevertheless is a terrific night for food and a date. They bring out dishes with a trolley which is quite amazing. They have a DIY salad bar which is around $12 with main or $20 on its own. Interesting but I did not try that night (should had!)<br/><br/>Entree: gralax salmon, salted squid and cured lamb shoulder. All delicious but the squid is a bit plain. <br/><br/>Main: hanger steak and baby snapper. Not much choice here other than steaks in the menu, but it was enough to satisfy the table. The fish is a nice surprise. Not too bad. Loved the hanger steak.<br/><br/>Will be back for steaks and the lamb shoulder!

Wondering the town for some dinner, Miss Teeth and I stumbled upon a steak eatery hidden away in the alleyway behind a wall of graffiti, A Hereford Beefstouw. When we stepped inside we were greeted by the lovely staff and was shown inside. It was a very rustic scene and I was oh so excited seeing as there were quite a few city slickers all having steak.<br/> <br/><br/>In the middle of the eatery stood the salad buffet. If you’re not into steaks, you have an option of having The Garden which is unlimited refills at the buffet. There is a huge selection from pickled everything to dairy products and even chia seeds. You can get the garden as a main course for $20 or as an entree with a main for $12.

Visited this fabulous restaurant on a visit to Melbourne from the UK.  What a find!  Best steak we had on our holiday, and that included Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.  Loved the location, service was very friendly, and my only complaint is that they don't have an A Hereford Beefstouw in the UK.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
A Hereford Beefstouw had its beginnings in 1971 in small rural Denmark. Named after the breed of cattle, its name might translate to ‘Hereford Steakhouse’. In 2007, the family bought a cattle farm in South Australia to supply their restaurants, but it wasn’t until 2011 that A Hereford Beefstouw opened its first Australian restaurant in Adelaide. Now it has arrived in Melbourne.

I really liked the bar area at the front for a pre-dinner drink before being seated.  The steak I had was excellent and I'm a fan of the salad bar (much rather choose my own!).  I also like the clean decor and quirky traits such as the cutlery and the ordering system.  Definitely recommend.

This is a pretty new restaurant in a popular laneway in Melbourne. The fit out is very blond wood and Scandinavian. Apparently it is a Danish steakhouse but hard to tell what makes it so, other than the blond wood and strange cutlery. The food was OK but the menu is very limited, the ordering system just plain weird. It took longer for the waiter to explain how it works than it would have just to have taken our orders in the normal way. Can't see this place taking off given it is slap bang in amongst some of the most exciting restaurants in Melbourne.

I have been here 3 times now, and each time I am glad to be there. Seasoned meat eaters will appreciate the steaks - the Chateaubriand is impeccable, as well as any of the other Dry-Aged beef. The decor is exactly how you would feel a Scandinavian steakhouse would be - clean and to the point, intriguing art, and a vibe that enables concentration on the delicious food put before you. In truth, this is an original restaurant for Melbourne that's not just another TV chefs drunken napkin scribble. Best steakhouse in the city.

Along with a group of food people I experienced an authentic and unique Danish steakhouse dining experience in A Hereford Beefstouw. With top notch food across every course, plenty of charm and a history that you can taste in every bite. They pride themselves on their quality steak and great wines and deservedly so. There were plenty of unique and creative touches from the cutlery, plates and the design of the restaurant. This was reflective of the establishment’s clear level of detail applied to every aspect of the dining experience. We left highly impressed of the venue and A Hereford Beefstouw delivers plenty of originality to cement its new place in the Melbourne culinary scene.

I'm always on the hunt for a good steak when in Melbourne, and there is never any shortage of good steak restaurants. A Hereford Beefstouw can now be added to that list - have been to the Adelaide version and am stoked it is now in Melbourne. Amazing selection of Dry aged cuts that they age themselves. I tried the 100 day Dry aged steak, and it didn't disappoint.

Came here yesterday for an office Xmas show. New restaurant just off Flinders Lane and it is a steak lovers paradise. Enjoyed the lunch immensely, was very busy but service was outstanding. Looking forward to heading back again at some stage.

A Hereford Beefstouw is a Danish steakhouse with multiple locations internationally, and I’m very glad that they have opened one up in Melbourne.<br/><br/>The impeccable service, coupled with the flawless steaks, made for an incredible dining experience. The steaks served here are some of the best in Melbourne, and its Danish heritage gives it a unique edge over ordinary steakhouses.

Hailing from a small rural town in Denmark, A Hereford Beefstouw first opened in 1971 due to the lack of dining options in the area for visiting customers of the Damgaard family’s clothing factory. Their main product is Hereford cattle, and in 2007 they started sourcing stock from Australia by the Burvills who were winemakers turned cattle farmers. Naturally their mutual interest created a strong partnership which allowed them to open their first Australian restaurant in Adelaide in 2011, and second one in Melbourne in 2016.

<br/>Best new restaurant in Melbourne. The detail in the fit out enhance the experience of the best steak you'll ever have. The Ribs are insanely tasty. See photos on IG<br/>

Fantastic new steakhouse in the CBD, just behind Garden State.  Stumbled across this little slice of Denmark last week,, and I was super impressed.  Absolutely beautiful decor, very Scandi.  Probably the best steak I've had this year (dry aged rib-eye).  Staff were great, and excellent wine list.  Will be back.

I really want to like A Hereford Beefstouw. On paper it ticks all the boxes. Aged steaks, nice sides and an all you can eat salad bar that was surprisingly really good. However something about this place is off. The vibe isn't what you expect from a normal tucked away laneway restaurant. You can't quite put your finger on it but something is off. The steaks were good. The service was good and the wine was well priced. It's not a horrible choice by any stretch but it's not a wow night kind of place is all I'm saying

Very nice new place on ac/dc lane. Looks very good and you feel its Scandinavian concept. I ordered the rib and it melted in my mouth. One of the best pieces of meat i ate. The service was professional, as far as this goes for a new restaurant with a new team. I would recommend this to my friends.

I had THE best rib ever! My friend had The mutton lamb, also very tasty. Service was good and friendly. The restaurant itself looks very nice as well. A new gem in the CBD. Next time we go for the steak. Oh and the Armangnac is a very cool thing to order, in your birth year and very tasty. We will come back!

I wonder what this restaurant will reopen as? Nice fit out both in the dining room and front bar. Ordering system took longer to explain than for the whole dining rooms orders to be taken, at least no client engagement happened.....food was nice but due to the lack of atmosphere we ate not dined. If black and white's your thing, look out for the grey.

We had a great meal here on the weekend. The service was friendly and attentive and food delicious albeit expensive. We had steak and ribs which were super tender. I think however that $40 steaks should come with at least a serve of chips or salad/veg.<br/>Ask for a window seat for a view over Flinders street.

Been to the Adelaide restaurant before, and I think the Melbourne version is a step up.  Cool craft beer list, and thought the staff were heaps friendly as well.

This is quite possibly the best restaurant I have been to in a long while, and now easily my fav steak restaurant in Melbourne.  I loved the furniture, but, as is a rarity these days, the acoustics were fantastic.  It was a relatively busy night in the restaurant, but I had no troubles hearing my friends across the table.  Bliss!  The steaks were divine, and cooked as we requested, and I would definitely come back.

The food was really good, though my sirloin was cooked medium instead of what I wanted; medium rare. (I'm not particularly fussy about it and went on eating it) The ambience was really nice but I feel the spacing between each diner tables should be abit more spacious as it feels a bit crowded. Overall it's one of the best steaks I had in the CBD. Service was good, nothing outstanding just don't rush us into ordering our food. 👌
David
Brand new steak house located in a funky laneway in the CBD. Definitely worth a visit! However, keep in kind they just opened so the service requires major improvement. Apparently their ordering system was not working properly so that resulted my friends and I waiting 40 minutes for our entree to come out. Waitstaff can be seen frantically running back and forth in the small dining area - this is kind of distracting actually. The food was very flavourful - my steak was cooked to perfection. I loved the salad buffet which is very unique to this restaurant. I will definitely come back... maybe in a couple months when the front of house staff have found their groove.

Perfect new place!<br/>The ordering concept is different but fun. The wait staff are very good, you can tell they're finding their feet still but they were all lovely.<br/>The food was great! <br/>The meat was amazing and perfectly cooked. We ordered the 700g rib eye that they carve at ur table it was delicious. <br/>The salad bar was amazing - all you can eat. Everything was so fresh and there was so much choice to make multiple amazing salads. <br/>The only downfall I found were the lobster tails lacked flavour. <br/>Overall though a great addition to Melbourne's restaurant family. <br/>I would recommend it to everyone and will also go back.

Fantastic new restaurant in the Flinders Lane area of Melbourne.  Very cool interior, staff were lovely and excellent choice of craft beers which I'm into.  Had the dry aged rump steak which was divine, and my partner had the grilled baby snapper which she said was also great.  Definitely worth checking out.
Hungry Brunette
Ok, it really wasn't great. Firstly, the bartender didn't ask my partner what drink he wants just started making my cocktail. Secondly, the feel of the restaurant is too clean, more unfinished, like something is missing. Thirdly, the numbering fast food style menu system where you mark your choice on a piece of paper and tea towel style napkins don't go well together with fine dining prices :/ The wine list is very limited. No French Pinot Noir :/ The salad bar is also limited and full of pickles and preservatives. The plates looked cheap. Food wise, the entrees were ok however the mains were disastrous. Steak was very fatty (not in a good way) and over cooked. Roasted snapper was more of a steamed and lacked flavour. Also note the sittings are 1 hour and 15 minutes (!) but staff is not in a hurry. Overall we won't return and won't recommend this so called steakhouse to anyone.
Bubbles Mama
Came here for a friend's birthday. I would say this is is one of the best steak I ever had. I ordered the eye fillet with a lobster tail and also added a salad bar (refil as much as you like) great selections of veges/fruits! We ordered Gravax Lax Salmon as an entree to share. Dessert- we had the mix dessert board. Overall service was great and food is phenomenal !!! Definitely will be back again !

Nestled in one of Melbourne's finest dining precints off Flinders Lane, A Hereford Beefstouw has recently opened its doors with an offering of modern Nordic cuisine focusing on high quality steaks. The restaurant design has clearly been inspired  by the Danish culture with clean lines and contemporary art featuring throughout the venue.
