Review Bergerac French Restaurant - Melbourne

Great Oyster, it happened to be the Chef’s suggestion with Tasmanian style. The taste for the steak is not as expected with too much black peppers. The overall experience is great, with the services and the meal. Suggested to have it with your partner or lover😄

I never had such exotic desserts before 😍 They were so yummmmm and different. We just tried sautĂ©ed mushrooms and desserts and I would definitely go again.

Excellent food, been here twice and loved it both times. Great traditional French restaurant!

Service was great. But the steak was nothing special. Dessert for me was the wowser. Most of them were good. I probably would have enjoyed it better if I ordered the seafood skewers.

We have been going to Bergerac for years, they never disappoint! The food is outstanding and I love that the staff are French too! Definitely recommend!

The worst western food in Melbourne, I ordered the duck and it came from a cane meat and it cost 17 3 dumping 18 just dose not worthy the price if the taste were good I would pay but taste very very bad! Would never never go back ! Dose not value the money at all

Great French restaurant in the heart of Melbourne. Genuine French food, good choice of wines and typical French service. Loved the ambiance, a bit reminiscent of a French bistro.

Staff there were very polite and professional. Loved everything especially the duck breast. Duck was tender, moist and flavoursome and the cabbage on the side was super yummy. my friend ordered the onion soup and it's the best he's ever had. Escargots were aromatic and delicious, cooked to perfection. Will definitely come back again

Came to try Bergerac food for the first time. It was on Thursday night but it was not busy. I ordered Duck Config which was nicely cooked but would have likes more sauce as I’m a sauce lover. Finished the night with Creme BrĂ»lĂ©e which was quite a generous portion. I seldom have french cuisine so not sure if it’s authentic but it certainly felt quite eggy. Overall, it’s still a pleasant experience for me. Lastly I must say I love the complimentary bread that was served before the meal as its so fresh till we finished two bowls of it.

It was freezing the day we came here and it was lovely and warm inside. The ambience was really nice. The waiters and waitresses were attentive.<br/><br/>The bread had a nice crunchy crust and the inside soft. The butter was presented in the shape of these cute little roses. The French onion soup was flavourful, but not quite as nice as the version I had in Paris. The mushroom was nice and creamy. For the main I had the special of the day, which was delicious and filling. The salmon was perfectly cooked. The dessert was the star of the show.. The Alaska bombe. It was a bit of a spectacle when presented, required a bit of effort to blow out the flame, and the flavours worked well.. I loved the icecream and the almond biscuit.. The dried fruits was a nice touch but after a few bites I didn't enjoy it so much..<br/>Overall a nice experience.

Feast Meets West
Have been to Bergerac twice, once at the original location on King St, and once at the new Lonsdale restaurant. Both times with my large family and every time we were treated with great, friendly service. The latest visit, I was worried I had made the booking too late (Sunday morning for dinner that night for a group of 14) but once I enquired online, someone called back immediately. The waitress was very attentive and was patient with my parents (who aren’t used to French cuisine) and my toddler nieces (who often walked around the table to say hello to family members). While I wouldn’t necessarily identify it as a “family restaurant”, it definitely was welcoming. Food and drink orders were taken, served and removed at appropriate times and wasn’t overbearing or pushed for more drinks. (Side note: thank you dear waitress, for writing it down and not trying to commit it all to memory; not a fan of that style!) Food in the photos were only a quarter of what was ordered but each dish was cooked well and delicious!! Nailed the confit duck and rare steaks :) I also love the added little details such as the room temperature, spreadable butter and the bread refills. I have another group function there this weekend pending confirmation but but I’m already so excited to be ordering a different dish. Priced well and great quality French food that’s not intimidating or pretentious. Highly recommend for a great night out!

I attended a work Christmas function at Bergerac. I ordered the steak tartare as an entree. The dish was deliciously balanced and the meat was extremely tender. I ordered the confit duck thigh for the main course. The duck was perfectly cooked and succulent. Service was fantastic and staff went over and above to cater to us.

Mmmmm... French cuisine isn't my usual to-go, however due to a special occasion, I visited Bergerac with a few mates a while ago. <br/><br/>My dining experience at Bergerac was pretty unique, we went there for dinner and the place was fairly vacant. Unique in a way that the staff who served us were all French and their customer service was attentive and sincere. They were patient in briefing us through the menu (and their special menu) and gave us adequate time and space for us to decide what to order.<br/><br/>We eventually got ourselves a few entrées to share and got some Moscato to compliment our dishes. We thought being at a French restaurant also meant that we should get ourselves some French fries (no puns intended) and their fries were pretty delicious too. <br/><br/>The mains came in big portions (especially for the duck confit) and they tasted good. I wouldn't go into details of how each dish tasted like but for the price that you would pay at restaurants as such, I would say it is worth it regardless (:

A traditional French restaurant serving up classic French food. The menu is very vast with meat, duck and seafood. I had the steak aux deux poivres 250gm eye fillet which was a beautiful piece of meat. Each bite was tender and perfectly cooked to medium. The creme brûlée was a perfect way to end the meal and I could eat a bowl of this stuff. We also shared a bottle of French red wine. Warm atmosphere and French speaking waiters makes for a pleasant dining experience.

My first experience with Bergerac was many years ago when the restaurant was still located on Melbourne's King Street. I was quite disappointed when I went to visit them again, only to find that they were no longer there. However, while looking for new restaurants in the city I happened to stumble upon their new Lonsdale Street location. Eager to try them again, I dropped my plans and visited them for dinner soon after.
Chronicles Of A Foodie
Was very impressed with this French restaurant. The food is authentic, the staff very friendly. <br/>The escargot was delicious, the charcuterie placate, the scallops and the prawn risotto were fantastic!
Gary
Now in Lonsdale Street in the legal precinct, a French restaurant a notch above 'bistro food' with a well tuned wine list and quality service, not 'over the top' but relaxed and pleasant. The overall experience is excellent as the ambience, food and staff combine effectively. BYO a bottle of wine; wise for the district where a gift might be opened! Better dishes include scallops, confit of duck and as a dessert the flamed bombe alaska. Well recommended.

Went to this place for the first time recently and love their lunch meal (two courses for $35). I tried the special porcini mushroom soup with truffle cream and the grilled Atlantic salmon as a main. Food was incredible and service was great. Will definitely be back!

Went here for breakfast this morning before a job interview and was pleasantly surprised. This little restaurant is lovely. Staff are very friendly and authentically French and polite. Prices are also reasonable. The premisses is also very well presented and clean.

I went there with the family on Monday night and being early in the week it was quiet. The ambiance is intimate and very French and the waiters have outrageous French accents (as you would expect). Louic looked after us extremely well and was very helpful. The service was quick and very attentive to our needs. They have an interesting menu and the food was excellent, I had the mixed seafood which came with a sauce that was "to die for". The wine list was quite reasonably priced and we got an Australian Elderton Shiraz for $45 but of course there was a wide selection of French wines. there were four adults and we did not have appetisers or deserts, just mains. The bill came to $150 before the tip which I thought was quite reasonable. I would definitely go back there and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

That many people can't be wrong on a booked out Friday lunch hour!<br/>I was taken here by some colleagues (no photos) for a lunch after a long week... I wasn't overly hungry so had a blue swimmer crab ravioli entree sized. It was three large delicious, hand made ravioli filled with crab meat in a bisque type sauce. My colleagues had the seafood sausages - sounds odd, looked great and I'm told was as light as mousse and really tasty.<br/>Being a shocking sweet tooth I couldn't turn down the dessert menu. Classic creme brûlée appealed. I eyed off my colleague's chocolate gateaux but have no regrets. It was the most creamy and divine creme brûlée I've had - with plenty of vanilla through it and a crisp sweeeet brûlée over the top. It came with a small dish if poached berries... I'd have licked the bowl if I could!!<br/>The service was great - and if you can speak French or just want to practise you're welcome!!!!<br/>Granted it's a "sometimes" treat - but what a treat it was!!! Well worth a visit if you're up for something a little more fancy!<br/>PS I organised a set menu Christmas dinner here for 24 - it was divine! See photos for the menu and meal!!!
Food For Thought
The restaurant has transported me back to France... Great wine list, scallops deliciously paired with apples and the steak aux deux poivres was perfectly cooked. It would be interesting to see the new restaurant as it is moving to a new location but I would definitely return.

We were entertaining some friends from the USA and Carole and I were anxious to show them a wide variety of the wonderful restaurants Melbourne has. Bergerac did not let us down!<br/><br/>Thus, after strong deliberation we chose Bergerac as one of our restaurants we wanted to visit. None of us were disappointed with the result and the night was quite simply put, scintillating. The food the service and the wine list were excellent and certainly up to everything we had in mind when we booked.<br/><br/>With the restaurant being based in French cuisine, there is a splendid variety of French fare available.<br/><br/>I chose Escargot (a favourite) for my entrée and was marginally disappointed insofar as it seemed one half of the plate was perhaps a little bit well done. But apart from that the flavours were fine and the entrée excellent. Our friends enjoyed a variety of entrées and all were satisfied with their choices.<br/><br/>Barramundi was fish of the day and it proved to be very popular with our dining partners, whilst, on the other hand, I could not go past the Filets de veau aux cépes, (pan fried baby veal fillets with porcini mushroom sauce & herb risotto), which was absolutely beautiful, and a delight to eat. <br/> We all shared an excellent Ratatouille and Garlic Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary.<br/><br/>To sum it up, this course was a sheer delight to eat.<br/><br/> And so to dessert - again, there were superb choices on offer - I chose a Gùteau au chocolat, whilst the Bombe Alaska proved to be very popular with the rest.<br/><br/>The service level did not disappoint, nor did the extensive variety of wines available, including some superb Sauternes.<br/><br/>In summary, it was a great night in excellent and very comfortable surroundings which, together with fine food and wine in the wonderful company of our international guests made the night memorable.<br/><br/>Bergerac deserves its high quality rating in the Melbourne restaurant scene, and it will be our pleasure to dine there again as soon as possible.<br/><br/>Congratulations to all concerned on making our evening memorable.
Anthony John
Just a great discrete venue with wide choice for wine and food wth a simple honesty evoking the quint essence of what you hope for. Well worth a little visit

I've only been to Bergerac for lunch and its never disappointed. During lunch time they have many bookings for business lunches, there's so many businessmen there. <br/>So if anyone is looking for a business lunch go here, because the atmosphere is quiet and everyone is professional.<br/><br/>I'd suggest for first timers to try their two course lunch meal. It's great to try a variety of their menu and soup of the day for a reasonable price!<br/><br/>A group of us tried the below for entree:<br/>- Mixed Bruschetta: yummy, but the eggplant spread was very light.<br/>- Home-made terrine with chutney, cornichons & toasted baguette: flavoursome, first time trying terrine. <br/>- Salad Niçoise, potatoes, olives, green beans, tomato, anchovies<br/>- Yellow fin tuna, boiled egg, virgin olive oil<br/><br/>Main:<br/>- Lamb médaillons, served with a potato gratin, rosemary jus. - doesn't look as appealing but the flavour is there. Lamb is so juicy.<br/>- Grilled Atlantic salmon served on vegetable caponata with a balsamic Jus <br/>- Grilled chicken (de-boned) roasted potatoes, porcini mushroom sauce<br/><br/>Definitely recommend trying out lunch, there's a variety to choose from and great value!

I recently had dinner here with my group of friends. Even though it took a while to get someone to take our order, I have to commend the excellent service that we received throughout the night here. It's a small cosy restaurant. Definitely a spot for a more mature crowd. I give the food 6/10.

This was a great French experience. Their best elements were indeed the mains and the deserts. However, the French onion soup fell slightly short on this occasion. They cooked my steak perfectly. And the desert was amazing. A good place to have a corporate lunch if you want to. The service was quite nice, and they shared the specials of the day, although we didn't take advantage of those.

I have just been to a group booking for lunch at Bergerac. Most of the group ordered the 2 course lunch special and were happy with their meals. They paid $32.00 a head. I just wanted a light lunch so I ordered the Salade Nicoise as a main only. I was served a large plate with very little on it - salad greens, one egg, four miniscule tomatoes and 2 small anchovy slices, 2 small slivers of canned tuna and eight tiny taters all dripping in oil. For this I was charged $29.00. We weren't offered tea or coffee at the conclusion of the meal and waitresses had a nasty habit of dropping and breaking glasses and bottles of chilled water.A thoroughly unhappy lunch. Would never go back.

Authentic French restaurant that has been in melbourne CBD for ages.. Came here for lunch special and I enjoyed their tuna salad and salmon... Great ambience too

Well it was a date night for us and we expected something a bit more glamorous then this - its in desperate need of a reno here. Classic is one thing but it felt like it would have been a place my grandparents went - in the 50's.<br/><br/>As we go to Bistro Thierry each week we have high standards - the onion soup was very salty but still ok - we then ordered 2 steaks - partners was fine but mine was like a leather boot. I eat 4 steaks a week med well done but this missed the mark. Chips were good though as was the bernaise.<br/><br/>I wish there were more elegant champagne on the list rather than the same ol you get at BWS - the service though was terrific and they took my steak off the bill which is highly commendable.
Andrew
Bergerac is a traditional restaurant with authentic decor. It looks a bit odd but in the end it fits the concept. Food is quite good, portions are generous but the menu could be more original.<br/>We shared a charcuterie platter and then decided to go full on the duck - confit de canard and magret de canard. They were enjoyable. The disappointing part was the dessert, a boring creme brulee that was lacking flavour.<br/>Odd fact,, the young waiter apparently did not know what gluten free bread is, since he had to ask the manager to come and speak to us.<br/>Apart from that, our dinner experience was not that bad.

Thank you Guillaume and Julie for outstanding, friendly and efficient service. Thanks also to the chefs for a really beautiful meal. Should any of you be in Perth please contact Ann Kennedy for hospitality if not the same level of cuisine:) Bon chance !

Look no further than Bergerac if you're after traditional French cuisine with the French feel inside to match. <br/>Food was superb and the floor staff were friendly and helpful. <br/>Entree: French onion soup, everything you'd expect from a traditional French onion. A touch salty, however I'm not a huge salt fan to begin with. <br/>Main: Coq au vin, lovely and presented so well. The chicken was as tender as ever, and the assortment of vegetables were well flavoured and so fresh. <br/>Dessert: Creme brûlée. Creamy, with the perfect amount of sweetness. Ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth. <br/>

Recently renovated circa 1970, this place is a little gem. Beautiful food, pleasant service and very well priced - it won't disappoint. All jokes aside, there is a certain charm about the decor you won't find in many other places. It's a really nice experience and I'd recommend it above a lot of other French restaurants in the city.

Hidden gem traditional French.<br/><br/>King Street in Melbourne usually doesn't evoke images of up-market, quiet dining. This is why it took me years of driving or walking past Bergerac before I finally dared to try dining here. It was worth coming here.<br/><br/>The interior is decorated with an appropriately pleasant theme, with a quiet ambience to have a relaxed, peaceful evening meal. Service is attentive and helpful.<br/><br/>The food is generous in portion size, and good traditional style French. I prefer the food here to other French places in the CBD such as Vue De Monde or Bistro 1. The Bombe Alaska dessert is my guilty pleasure.<br/><br/>If Bergerac were situated near the theatres I think it would be full most nights. But given its current location, it's mostly empty whenever I visit. I wouldn't be surprised if Bergerac was someone's labour-of-love, and not run for the profit, but that's okay with me, because I still enjoy dining here.

Oui, un repas délicieux!!. Having recently returned from France, it was lovely to dine at an authentic yet homely French restaurant in the heart of the city. Serving French cuisine from the Périgold region (90km east of Bordeaux), we were treated to a delicious 4 course meal consisting of tantalising porcini mushroom soup (with a drizzle of truffle oil), followed by 'Cote de Boeuf Bearnaise' (a tasty rib-eye beef, served with crunchy garlic potatoes), and finishing off with a lovely cheesecake served with mango coulis. The service here was prompt and impeccable, and the place took us right back to France. Merci encore pour votre repas délicieux, on va revenir définitivement!

Traditional but different French cuisine. I had the duck dish and my partner had the veal. The duck was very tender and the sauce matched with it perfectly. For desert we had the Bombe Alaska, which had ice-cream in the middle with dried fruit, on almond biscuit, then covered with meringue and they poured Grand Marnier over it with some fire. What a dessert! Will certainly come back with friends and family. A hidden away gem.

Haven't tried a lot off the main menu, but their escargot and bombe Alaska are truly wonderful. A must try for these two alone

Lovely service, lovely food, lovely atmosphere. Wandered into Bergerac while searching for a good dinner place, and we were very pleased with our finding. No appetizer, but a glass of champagne with cassis to get us started.<br/>

I think since about 4 years ago I’ve always wanted to visit Bergerac French restaurant but didn’t have the opportunity. I remember that I was reading food blogs, researching for places with tasty food. Then, I stumbled upon this restaurant. What’s so special about this restaurant you say? There were two items that caught my attention when I was browsing their online menu. My favorite Bouillabaisse and Bomb Alaska! Finally, on Easter Monday, my wish to dine in that restaurant has come true. Inside the restaurant. Nicely lit and many interesting pictures hanging on the walls. Crusty skin and soft in the middle Smoked salmon stack with brioche wafers, celeriac remoulade & salmon roe French onion soup with cheese croutons The smoked salmon stack was one of their specials that day. So glad that I ordered it as my entrĂ©e . All the components of the dish matches so well. The brioche wafers were

Overall, a very very satisfying dinner, definately coming back to try the rest of their menu. Price wise, I reakon it's rather cheap for authentic high quality french cuisine and awesome company for the night! Highly recommended!

The salmon gravlax is another hit. Slices of smoked salmon are dotted with orange fish roe which provide a cleansing 'pop' of flavour. The toasted brioche is sweet and charred on the outside, complimenting the cured salmon well.

After a lovely meal, all that remains to say is vive la France!

Ok it's a little quirky but it's refreshing in its lack of conformity to modern decor. What is fantastic is the service, the value for money and the food. Good quality ingredients, friendly staff and great flavours.
Souperman
Old school is still stylish. It was our first time here. The decor is old school plush which is actually refreshing and suits a french restaurant. <br/>The staff were very pleasant and efficient. <br/>The menu is typical fare, all the old favourites with enough variety to please. The servings are quite large. It's not nouvelle cuisine and no one in the kitchen is trying to win the weird chef award. <br/>We will be back.
Moofieisthebest
Best. The best restaurant in Melbourne. Service always first class. Prices realistic. Setting terrific.<br/>Always make sure I receive Bergerac gift vouchers for my birthday.........no more socks and jocks, just a great night out
Food_lover
Their 2 course lunch deal is really good value at $28. Better yet, soft drinks are only $3.5 each which is unheard of at restaurants these days. Service is good and the food quality is consistent. The bread is a highlight - the way it should be at a French restaurant. They seem to do well with the business crowd during the week and so make sure you get in early or book ahead.

Nice one!. First time eating French, not disappointed, really enjoyed the duck dishes. Atmosphere is quite nice and the staff are on the ball.

Incroyable. This place has become one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne! The food is stunning, the ambience very convincingly French and the service is fantastic!!! Highly recommended

More than just Snails & wine. The battle for the final starter bread began, out of nowhere a french lady swamped in and collected the bread basket containing the "prize" possession. Before we could master how to swear in french she returned with a basket full of bread and prosperity has been restored. Such is the service one would receive at the grand Bergerec, all of their staffs know what the guests want before the guest themselves. The common perception of french people being snobbish & rude was thrown out of the window and will be debunked passionately in future social conversations should the question ever arise.
Kat
My boyfriend took me here last night on our first night in Melbourne, and it didn't disappoint! The food is incredible - good sized servings, delicious flavours (that you wouldn't necessarily pick to mix together) and feels very authentic! I had the scallops for entree and the duck breast for main and both were delicious!! Also love the decor - not pretentious, slightly irreverent, and again, feels authentic... The French speaking waitresses helped with the authenticity too!! When we are back in Melbourne, we will definitely be back!

What a great place! I have been working across the road for over a year and I finally got there for lunch today. Having been in the Bergerac area last year and had the "real thing" in terms of the food I was a bit nervous about trying this place, but it really was fantastic. The food was just as good as we had in France. It is so exciting to have somewhere we can go locally to get the same calibre of cuisine. Can't wait to go go back.

One word and that is AMAZING!!! Everything about this place, the service, the lay out, the music and of course the food!!! I will definetly be going back there again.

Frenchy. Walked past this place, thought we'd try lunch. Told waiter we didn't have a reservation, he still found us a table. We started with escargot, wonderful balance of red wine and garlic flavour, snails weren't overcooked like a lot of places do. Had crab ravioli for main, intense flavour of bisque which wad great. others had veal on herb risotto. Had the cheese platter which wss great value, others had bombe alaska, a great theatrical dish with flaming congac poured on it, rest of diners were very impressed. Finished with a strong latte, great flavour and not burnt. A 10/10 dinner

Old School. Went to Bergerac in January when all the trendy restaurants in Melbourne were closed for the holidays. My wife and I took my son and his girlfriend for his birthday. This is the antithesis of the expensive, overblown, trendy, self-important, ordinary restaurants that do so well with a clientele that don't have much experience of good food. The menu is old fashioned and basic rustic French. It's comfortable, with great service and excellent food. The wine list is small but interesting and the prices are very sharp. All in all no culinary wizardry - I called it vieux cuisine - but good honest fair. And the photo of the Bocuse kitchen in Paris indicated that the owner has some interesting pedigree but nothing here is flaunted.

Always great. I have had multiple business lunches here and the food, atmosphere, service were consistently perfect. I believe this is one of the few places in Melbourne where one can get traditional French cuisine (and I'm from there) without pretension and at very reasonable prices. In addition, it is very quiet and one can have a proper conversation without the common hubbub of Melbourne restaurants. A little gem.
Anthonymichaels
Great food, fantastic service, excellent prices. A place I'll definitely be returning to.
Liz.clancy
Outdated. The restaurant looks like an old bistrot - red carpet, old chandeliers, old-fashioned pictures on the walls. We didn't feel very comfortable although the staff was quite friendly.<br/>Food was good (we had some snails, oysters, veal and eye fillet - flavours were balanced) but extremely over priced. They charged us like it was a fine dining place but it really isn't. However, wines were really cheap and wine list extensive.<br/>I think I'd rather go there for lunch since their 2 courses lunch offer is a much better value.
Rennie
A surprise awaits!. I've wanted to try Bergerac for a long time and I'm glad that I finally did. From the relatively small and relatively unimpressive entrance on King street you climb a few stairs and upon entering you take a step back in time into what is what you would expect a restaurant like this to look like back in the 80s or 90s. The waitresses are friendly and attentive with an accent befitting the restaurant. There is ample to choose from on the menu or for lunch the 28.50 special is great value for a selection of two courses. For me, the Salad Nicoise and the grilled Atlantic Salmon were just perfect. There is a very good wine list with a good sub-selection available by the glass for those that can't indulge for an entire afternoon! Really worth a try.

Delicious Food. Came here last weekend for my sisters engagement dinner.<br/>The staff were an absolute delight and nothing was too much trouble. We had a lovely French waitress who was so obliging and always had a smile on her face. <br/>The food was incredible, couldn't get enough of the snails, they were buttery goodness and I used my bread to mop up the sauce. The steak was enormous, but I ate the whole thing as it was just delicious. The creme brulee was the best I have ever had. <br/><br/>Overall, it was one of the nicest dining experiences I have had, a non pretentious restaurant and great traditional French food. Even though being in King St, I will definitely be coming back. Thanks so much.

Authentic Frech Cusine. My boyfriend and I came here Sunday night after being recommended by a friend. We were greater by a lovely waiter you was very informative and kind. We ordered a dozen escargot (snails), a cold meats platter and French onion soup. It was my first time trying snails and they were absolutely delicious. They came already shelled in a yummy garlic and parsley sauce. The meat platter was to die for and the accompanying butter was delicious. We had 3 entrees, two mains, dessert and two glasses of sparkling moscato all for $150, what a bargain!! Will definitely be coming back!

Lunch. I came here with friends for the 2-course lunch special which is outstanding value.<br/><br/>I had the French onion soup which was very passable, and for main, squid stuffed with seafood with saffron rice. It was all very pleasant. It's not fancy - it's rustic and genuine and that's what I like. The portion sizes were just right (and generous with the portion size of the glass of wine!). <br/><br/>They were efficient with timing which is important when you're on a lunch break and there was loads to choose from for the 2-course lunch special. Recommended!

Very French both in cuisine and interior. Looks like something out of the 70s (just like most restaurants in France!) and they do not stray too far from the french classics. <br/><br/>And they do them pretty well I think. Having spent a lot of time in France, I feel that french cuisine is one cuisine that never reaches the heights outside its' native shores. <br/><br/>But if you get a craving for some french classic, this place will do it well and you will feel for a short time like you are sitting in a traditional french restaurant in France.
David
Amazing Experience!. I've been visiting this lovely restaurant regularly for the past 15 years probably about once or twice a fortnight, the food is great the hospitality is wonderful and it really never seems to disappoint :D - very happy 8.5/10

Great food, great service. Spot on with real French cuisine. Very well priced for the quality of food and service.

Food is great, but you return because of the service - which is why I will.

Disappointing in all regards. We have been to the real Bergerac in France every year for about 20 years and are therefore very familiar with the food and wine of this region. Unfortunately this restaurant doesn't live up to its name. The food was very disappointing - especially the duck which was overcooked. The starter portions were tiny for the price. The bomb alaska was also unpleasant - in fact the first dessert in 10 years I have opted not to finish. The service was poor (ordered a bottle of wine, given 2 glasses instead, slow to take order etc) and the price much greater than the quality of the experience. We won't be returning.

This just reminds me how muc.... This just remands me how much I dislike French cuisine. Sorry A.C. I'm sure its great, but we need to have our meetings elsewhere.

Perfect!. Fanatstic food, service and ambience. 11/10

Heaven on a plate. Bergerac, situated at 131, King St., is one of the last of the formerly ubiquitous French restaurants still serving classic French dishes in Melbourne. Located at the wrong end of the city for weekend diners, parking nearby can prove to be a problem. However a visit here is well repaid.<br/><br/>Oddly overlooked by the professional restaurant reviewers who are perhaps more interested in food for their ego rather than food for their soul, Bergerac has thrived on a loyal clientele of lawyers and business people during the week and discerning diners at the weekend for over 25 years.<br/><br/>I have lost count of the number of times I have dined here over the years but it is still a restaurant I look forward to returning to. It is probably the only restaurant now where I still yield to temptation and go the whole three courses at dinner. <br/><br/>And why wouldn’t you start dinner with Coquille St. Jacques, then move on to a superb Bouillabaisse for main course? Bombe Alaska may have its origins in China rather than France, but who cares when you have heaven on a plate for dessert? Unless of course if they put a Tarte Tatin on the menu as well, In which case I’d probably have an entrĂ©e and two desserts. <br/><br/>The wine list is quite varied and ranges from reasonably priced to quite expensive with a goodly selection by the glass.<br/><br/>Overall, Bergerac is an excellent restaurant for a special dinner but even better when you want to spoil yourself.

Deliciousness requires time. I have been here several times now and the food has always been wonderful. I have invited friends to dine here many times and the staff have never disappointed. In fact, though I swore to never try snails, I trusted the chefs enough to do so here and though it won't ever be my favourite dish, it was definitely tasty. Further, as a person who generally dislikes creme brulee, I whole-heartedly recommend you try the creme brulee here. I absolutely LOVE it!<br/><br/>So if you have time to enjoy your meal, I would totally recommend this place. IF you have time. I would not recommend Bergerac if you have a meeting scheduled right after. The service is somewhat slow, not that it's the wait staff's fault. The wait staff have always been friendly, professional and attentive. It's just that it appears to take a bit more time to prepare all these delicious dishes.

Fantastic in every respect. The oysters were plump and flavoursome, and the crab ravioli in a crab bisque and the scallops on a leek fondue were superb. The veal was succulent, tender and sweet, and the lamb medallions with potato gratin was real comfort food. The raspberry and creamed rice dessert was heavenly. The service is exceptional. Professional, efficient and friendly. A wonderful dining experience.

Incredible. I have eaten here a number of times and have never been disappointing. The service is exceptional and the food unbelievable. Highly recommended.

Wonderful!. Adored this place! Found it by accident with my partner one evening, and we were both extremely impressed. Service was wonderful, and the staff were more than happy and willing to alter one of my dishes in order to accomodate a food allergy I have. The meals were all delicious, although the Escargot seemed to have a little too much garlic for my liking. Regardless though, it was still pleasant and one of the best French dining experiences I've had in a long time. Will definitely be returning on my next trip to Melbourne.

Amazing Food. My partner and I have been to Bergerac on a number of occasions, and have always found it to be excellent, if slightly in need of a renovation.<br/><br/>French food, French wine, French waiters... you know what you're in for when you walk in the door, and it never disappoints.<br/><br/>Simple, honest, bistro food. It's not Vue de Monde, but it doesn't try to be.<br/><br/>Order the Steak aux Deux Poirvres on your first visit, and try not to order it again the next time. Good luck. =)

A little piece of France. French wines, waiters and food tres bon

Pate was OK but moroccan salmon tasted like plain grilled salmon. No spices detected. So disappointed. A bad meal really ruins my evening. Friend had pepper steak and raved about it.

Great food kitchy atmosphere. Haven't been to a French restaurant in years. Service was great, constant bread put on table without asking. Delivery of food was efficient and wine list was great. <br/><br/>Had 3 courses. Cost was reasonable and mains were excellent. The bombe Alaska was fantastic!<br/><br/>Great place to go on a date very romantic like a French movie scene!

Last christmas' dinner. Note: This is a very late review<br/><br/>I went here with a group of friends last Christmas because we made a late decision on where to go for Christmas. As expected, most places were full so we decided to go here.<br/>First impression: this place's old and felt like we were back in 20s. However, it does add some style to the experience.<br/>Dishes were great. They're not pretty as they're served in big bowls with generous portion but they're so tasty. They also do BYO wine and charge reasonably. I would love to go back!

Bland. I brought some interstate guests here for dinner on a Friday night. It was not too busy or loud which is good for conversation. <br/><br/>We had the snails, and for the main I had the seafood grill. I thought it was tasty but overall nothing special. Didn't seem that french to me! Also, I thought it was slightly overpriced for the serving size and for what it was. Wouldn't go back.

Great food. We had been wanting to try French for so long and seeing how highly recommended this place came. The service was brilliant, the food was fantastic. We will definitely come back.

My god this restaurant is so French !!! You think your in Paris rather than Melbourne. No, strike that, way better than your average Paris tourist trap restaurant. It's great; it's an institution. Try the Bombe Alaska, which will be brought flaming to your table (no, come to think of it they light it at your table).
Oyster
Surprisingly good. A very French like restaurant except for the serve sizes. Serves are large and generous and does not sacrifice overall taste. Quality of food seems consistent every time I go.<br/><br/>Service is slightly above average, nothing special. They are friendly and prompt but does not offer special treatments such as hanging of coats, pre-emptive servicing etc, though the French accent is definitely a plus. <br/><br/>Food: 7<br/>Service: 6

Worth visiting. Food was excellent. good use of olive oil. Bread is delivered to the restaurant fresh every day; i know, I walk by in the mornings to see the delivery.<br/>Pro: Great attentive service, not too large a menu<br/>Con: Bit too brightly lit.<br/>Well done Cyrano!

Bombe Alaska!!!. .<br/>Pro's:<br/>- No weird stuff like frogs legs<br/>- Seafood bisque to die for<br/>- Dessert favourite = Bombe Alaska<br/>- Good French wine selection, but you have to pay $$ to get anything good<br/>- Menu changes throughout the year but still keeps all the popular faves<br/><br/>Con's:<br/>- Can be pricey $$$<br/>- You do tend to get posers and snobs dining there
