I have to say the grilled salmon is always delicious and very well cooked, although not a very generous portion compared to the fried options. By contrast, the smallest portion of chips you can add on their own is $6 and the quantity is RIDICULOUS. Way way waaayyyy too many for one person and such a waste. They must throw out a lot of them because just about every finished plate still has chips left on it from what I have observed over the years eating in. If you get a pack with chips and salad the quantity is a bit more sensible but still over the top. I wish they would add an extra small and a mini/kids size for $4 and $2 respectively - sometimes you just want a few chips but don’t want to waste food and money. Pictured is the remainders of the takeaway $6 portion of chips - I have a normal appetite AND went to gym today and that is all I could manage to eat along with my fish.
Always my go to favourite. Consistently great quality always generous servings. Grilled fish, Greek salad and brown rice always spot on. Unfortunately they ran out of lamb skewers today. But that is also very tasty. Plenary of seating and well spaced out. Heaters outdoors always on!

I don’t eat seafood. I know, I know... what could I possibly have to say about hunky dory if don’t eat fish? A lot actually... they’re not only all about the fish. They make other really delicious dishes. Like the veggie burger - YUM! And the selection of salads - double yum! Also, all my fish eating peeps reckon hunky dory serves up some of the best fish they’ve ever eaten. So there’s that!
My first Hunky Dory experience and I was looking for a little bit of everything on a plate. I do prefer fried to grilled but I felt that I've had enough grease for the week and went for the grilled version of their seafood and salad pack.
Under a huge bed of Greek salad was a fish fillet, strips of soft calamari and a couple of grilled prawns. I loved the heavy seasoning on the prawns and wished that there was more of it on the other seafood. Wedge of lemon to dress up the seafood but regrettably, I wish I got their fried variation. Perhaps next time. My friends also got some of their golden chips, not bad. Hot and crisp, I had to season the chips with sea salt myself as they came unseasoned.
I leaned towards healthy that day but you know what, go for what you're craving, that way you don't have any food regrets.
As someone who doesn’t eat seafood… I don’t have the most fun when dining at Hunky Dory! It definitely has the biggest serve of chips I’ve ever seen, which is surely a good thing in itself. There’s Hunky Dorys all across Australia. It’s a popular fish and chip chain and perhaps one of the only fish and chip chains here. They had some controversy back in the day. At least one of the stores was shipping in frozen fish, but still remains a firm favourite of the masses, judging by the crowd. Not a lot survives this end of Chapel Street and it’s been for a good while now.

This is my favourite healthy dinner venue. The food is always consistently fantastic and so is the service. The grilled options and sweet potato chips are delicious! Also the broccoli and kale salad is a favourite.

Hunky Dory is ever so reliable whenever the craving for fish and chips hit, and judging from the crowds at most of their shops around Melbourne, I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
The place was absolutely buzzing on a cold and wet night, so we did feel rather crammed dining in, and trust me, you wouldn't want to be discussing anything too personal when the tables are so closed together. On the bright side, being so close to the table next to us meant that we could share the last bottle of chilli sauce together.
The fish held itself well underneath the deep fried golden batter, and was firm yet slightly flaky. The batter could be a bit more crisped in the middle, but taste-wise, no complains. The potato cake was perfection, as was the dim sim which I'm usually not a fan off. No words needed to be said about the hot chunky chips other than yum!
The salt and pepper calamari was excellent too, and the calamari was of a lovely bouncy yet firm texture. Well seasoned, and beautifully cooked.
Polite service, and even though the place was packed, and there were a large numbers of takeaway, we didn't had to wait long for the food to arrive.
Delicious! The fish is so fresh and I love how crunchy the sweet potato chips are. Hunky Dory is great value for money, you can get a huge feed for just $14.

I had a pleasant experience when I went Hunky Dory.
There are lots of great options on the menu, and I opted to go for the Salt n Pepper Calamari with Greek Salad and a side of sweet potato wedges. I was surprised by how much calamari I received, definitely good value for money but some of the calamari pieces were a bit oily. The sweet potato wedges are awesome: crispy on the outside and soft & fluffy on the inside.
My friend got the grilled barramundi fillet pack with chips and Greek salad. The barramundi fillet was quite small for the price paid.
The meals came out quite fast and overall we both left feeling full.
Was feeling like a surplus of fried food and hunky dory didn't disappoint. Wasn't too oily, super yummy. Got my fix. Looking forward to try their non-fried options next time. (゜))
A blend of healthy and treat yourself. The fish is nice, grilled flavours are tasty as. Sweet potato fries are a winner as well as the potato cakes.
I'm always bewildered by the menu whenever I come to a Hunky Dory.
There's just so much choice, but the combinations all seem kind of similar.
Nevertheless, I bit the bullet and went for the grilled fish with Mediterranean flavours.
The flesh is just so moist and juicy with natural oils and it's seasoned perfectly.
I really loved it, especially with the brown rice and quinoa salad, I felt so healthy.
The grilled calamari strips were also excellent - soft, thick, tender on the bite and also seasoned well. We opted for a base of chips which I think was a bit of a mistake, as a salad would have been better. The chips were just okay - only a little bit crispy on the outside.
Friendly team at this branch, the seafood was definitely satisfying.
Can’t fault the food here, it is spot on every time! The servings are HUGE and can easily be shared between two. My fav is the chargrilled calamari with kale/broccoli salad and sweet potato wedges 😍
Like it absolutely!!! One of the most POPULAR fish n chips shop just downstairs of my home. Like all its fried chips and seafood...even the potato cake... Tried this wagyu burger in a rainy evening which has totally fulfilled my mood！！！！
These guys do the best-grilled fish. COoked to perfection and full of flavour. I ordered the African and it was delicious. I usually go to the Highett branch but I preferred the layout of this joint. Customer service was satisfactory.

Starting off with the go to African for me I found it consistent with what I’ve known from the guys at other hunkys. A new addition to the menu is the panko fish burger which was lovely and crispy with a slaw and spicy sauce in a brioche bun. Not usually a fan of the Brioche bun but it works when the fillings are light

Hunk Dory is a great fish n chip venue. The service is friendly and fast. Always fresh and tasty and the char grilled Kalahari was fresh and cooked perfect. The salad was fresh. Everything was fresh.
There's a reason why hunkys is always pumping, particularly in summer. Dishing up fresh fish served with a wide range of salads and friendly service, there's a lot to love!
Visited the outlet at South Yarra. Got the 'Old School' and 'The Bay' fried packs. Generous portions I must say. The fish were well cooked and moist. Chips were yummy. And they have bottles of ketchup that you can help yourself to! Most places I go to I have to ask for it. Nice and new decor. Great place for a quick lunch.
Had the calamari and chips pack for lunch and wasn't disappointed. Enjoyed the generous portion of the chips (be warned that you may feel quite sluggish after this meal and will need a coffee!) and the calamari was large in sizes. Good service and ambiance as well!
Consistently good food, fresh seafood and great value meals - it's no wonder its a popular venue for all walks of life. Grilled calamari hasn't been matched in my books (haven't had anything better yet) and pairs perfectly well with the fresh salads. The grilled fish with rice/salad with the different sauces linked with different regions are all fairly tasty (I've had 3/5 and love the African most). Have only been disappointed once when a staff member messed up the order (after we waited AGES) but we were too hungry to wait for it to be rectified.

I love the fish here, very fresh and tender, especially the grilled one. However, the chips here not so tasty, lack of crispy texture and flavourless. A good choice of salad is the super salad that you can choose to update normal salad to it.
I come here quite often and have always enjoyed the grilled fish and the salad varieties. The atmosphere is pretty good and can get quite busy during the lunch period.
We always know that we are going to get a good feed here! On a warm night Hunky Dory is all we need! We love getting the chargrilled calamari with fresh greek salad. If you're ever looking for a delicious and nutritious meal this is the place to go. Furthermore the quick service and cool vibes at the South Yarra restaurant enhances the experience.
Just a regular here who's always had pleasant experience.. especially today, as I was given extra salmon when I ordered salmon grilled pack for takeaway. It makes my day when I get free food, so thanks a lot guys for that generous gesture! 😂 Another reason to love Hunky Dory i guess.. fresh fish, always loved the salmon here, great service. It's basically my go-to lunch spot.
Great fish and chip franchise that has great produce and quite a variety to choose from, which differs it from some other fish and chip shops. The packs offer great value and the small coleslaw we ordered was bloody huge! Battered fish is also nice and crispy, not dense like some other places.

I have never been disappointed at Hunky Dory! I always go the healthy option and get brown rice salad and grilled fish (usually).... but why wouldn't you go healthy if you know you're going to be ridiculously satisfied? The steamed dim Sims are also delicious from here!

Love the fresh salads at Hunky Dory - the fish and chips are good too of course, but I really believe that it's the salads that make this fish and chips chain a cut above the rest! Ironically though, the photo from my latest visit is of a 'Coupled Up' pack rather than my usual 'Grilled Flavours From Around The World' selection, but no doubt I'll be back again soon to enjoy the fabulous Quinoa salad they make here.
The staff here a super friendly and the venue always clean and comfortable. In summer, there's nothing better than sitting outside by the street, enjoying the food and company. A regular fave!

Fresh Generous Fish & Chips. Almost never without a queue. Very generous with the carbs. The "coupled up" pack will happily feed 3 with the excessive quantity of chips that came with.
Great food. Decent pricing. Maybe some more variety would be good. The seats hurt my bum. But quite pleased with the food. Don't know what else to say so I just said this.

One of the best fish and chips in town!!! It's reasonable price and wide range of menus (also including meat and chicken) will make you satisfied. The portion is quite large for this kind of food, and I'm sure you will not regret it.

Good grilled fish. A wander on a sunny day had me arrive in Chapel St with an empty tummy. The seafood display at Hunky Dory is always so tantalisingly fresh l was sold on the spot to stay for lunch.
There's a huge menu of fish, chips, salads and sides to choose from, and they even allow BYO. I had the grilled pack, which today was John Dory, and comes with chips or rice and salad. Coming so soon after a recent splurge, l swapped the carb options for another salad.
My fish was moist and tasty, grilled with a gentle seasoning that complemented the delicate fish flavour. The Greek salad was a bit heavy on the lettuce and light on the feta, and appeared minus olives. They're probably all healthy choices but not quite what l think Greek salad is or should be. The garden salad was an abundant mix of leaves with a light dressing. A large lunch for $13.50, or $15.50 if upgraded to one of the 'super' salads (quinoa, kale etc).
Service is from the back counter and is smart and fast. A popular spot with quality fish that deserves attention.

The whole experience was hard to fault. Our fish and chips came quickly and were really well cooked. The chips were super crunchy and the fish moist and not at all fatty. We didn't have any of the salads, but many dining around us did and they looked really appealing and fresh. The waitress working outside was also very friendly, helpful and efficient. I"ll be back!

I am one of the many customers who would travel half way from the other end of Melbourne just to have a bite of what they offer! Their specials are absolute treat. There were times when i would visit them every alternate day. a special grill (like the spanish/thai/mexican/african grilled fish) would come along with a magnificent salad of your choice and chips for around 18 something AUD.
Service is great and the guys will absolutely pamper you. A lot of my friends became big fans after i introduced them to this place.
Although a lot of outlets are there, i have always been to the South Yarra outlet. Love you guys!
This place has become the Wednesday night ritual for my girlfriend and I; always busy, the staff are always friendly, the food is consistently prepared to perfection and value for money is great! Can feel a little cramped on a chilly winter's night, but generally a great place to eat healthy food. Highly recommended!

Hunky Dory has really good sea food. The service has also been pretty great so far, given that I have been there quite a few times. They are not too pricy and portions are quite filling. Definitely a place to check out if you love seafood!

Really good burgers, the place is so busy at night, but staff is really nice and helpful, you should ask for salt on the chips because they don't put t straight away.

Delicious and healthier take on fish and chips: The grilled calamari is my go-to, or the seafood salad. You can choose to have a side of chips/rice or one of their salads, depending on what you're in the mood for. Definitely my choice for a decent guiltfree wallet friendly seafood feed.

Best fish chips I have had since a very long time. Fresh seafood display in the front area is a great idea. Very fast and friendly staffs. Came here at lunch time, this place was packed. They have a lot healthy options, which is bonus. Plenty choices to choose from. Scallop skewers I had was fantastic. Farm barramundi with Asian veggies was good. Would be better if they could serve with a bit more flavor. Good for healthy dinners though.
Best fish and chips in Melbourne. I've literally never had a bad meal here. Food is always fresh, even the salads are fantastic! Never even had so much as a slightly overcooked prawn. And given that you now take eftpos I don't have a single negative for this F&C mecca. For my money I'd say you need to try the chargrilled calamari.
God bless the Greeks - we might not know how to talk quietly or concrete modestly but we know how to do fish and chips right!!
Delicious. The sun is out and it is time for lunch at Hunky Dory in Sth Yarra. The food came out as requested on seperate plates and was thoroughly delicious.
