I have to say the grilled salmon is always delicious and very well cooked, although not a very generous portion compared to the fried options. By contrast, the smallest portion of chips you can add on their own is $6 and the quantity is RIDICULOUS. Way way waaayyyy too many for one person and such a waste. They must throw out a lot of them because just about every finished plate still has chips left on it from what I have observed over the years eating in. If you get a pack with chips and salad the quantity is a bit more sensible but still over the top. I wish they would add an extra small and a mini/kids size for $4 and $2 respectively - sometimes you just want a few chips but don’t want to waste food and money. Pictured is the remainders of the takeaway $6 portion of chips - I have a normal appetite AND went to gym today and that is all I could manage to eat along with my fish.
Always my go to favourite. Consistently great quality always generous servings. Grilled fish, Greek salad and brown rice always spot on. Unfortunately they ran out of lamb skewers today. But that is also very tasty. Plenary of seating and well spaced out. Heaters outdoors always on!

I don’t eat seafood. I know, I know... what could I possibly have to say about hunky dory if don’t eat fish? A lot actually... they’re not only all about the fish. They make other really delicious dishes. Like the veggie burger - YUM! And the selection of salads - double yum! Also, all my fish eating peeps reckon hunky dory serves up some of the best fish they’ve ever eaten. So there’s that!
My first Hunky Dory experience and I was looking for a little bit of everything on a plate. I do prefer fried to grilled but I felt that I've had enough grease for the week and went for the grilled version of their seafood and salad pack.
Under a huge bed of Greek salad was a fish fillet, strips of soft calamari and a couple of grilled prawns. I loved the heavy seasoning on the prawns and wished that there was more of it on the other seafood. Wedge of lemon to dress up the seafood but regrettably, I wish I got their fried variation. Perhaps next time. My friends also got some of their golden chips, not bad. Hot and crisp, I had to season the chips with sea salt myself as they came unseasoned.
I leaned towards healthy that day but you know what, go for what you're craving, that way you don't have any food regrets.
As someone who doesn’t eat seafood… I don’t have the most fun when dining at Hunky Dory! It definitely has the biggest serve of chips I’ve ever seen, which is surely a good thing in itself. There’s Hunky Dorys all across Australia. It’s a popular fish and chip chain and perhaps one of the only fish and chip chains here. They had some controversy back in the day. At least one of the stores was shipping in frozen fish, but still remains a firm favourite of the masses, judging by the crowd. Not a lot survives this end of Chapel Street and it’s been for a good while now.

Haven’t had a bad experience here. There are lots of options for yummy healthy eating with grilled fish and salad options. Very generous serving sizes. Will be back!
This is my favourite healthy dinner venue. The food is always consistently fantastic and so is the service. The grilled options and sweet potato chips are delicious! Also the broccoli and kale salad is a favourite.

Hunky Dory is ever so reliable whenever the craving for fish and chips hit, and judging from the crowds at most of their shops around Melbourne, I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
The place was absolutely buzzing on a cold and wet night, so we did feel rather crammed dining in, and trust me, you wouldn't want to be discussing anything too personal when the tables are so closed together. On the bright side, being so close to the table next to us meant that we could share the last bottle of chilli sauce together.
The fish held itself well underneath the deep fried golden batter, and was firm yet slightly flaky. The batter could be a bit more crisped in the middle, but taste-wise, no complains. The potato cake was perfection, as was the dim sim which I'm usually not a fan off. No words needed to be said about the hot chunky chips other than yum!
The salt and pepper calamari was excellent too, and the calamari was of a lovely bouncy yet firm texture. Well seasoned, and beautifully cooked.
Polite service, and even though the place was packed, and there were a large numbers of takeaway, we didn't had to wait long for the food to arrive.
