Review Mamak - Melbourne

Kevin Chen
Authentic food and very much a guilty pleasure. The food is pretty much exactly what you'd want from an Asian canteen / casual restaurant that serves Malaysian food. The curry is somewhat mild and thin compared to other cuisines such as Indian or Japanese curries, which means that you definitely want rice to go with them. The meats were delicious and fresh, and I find that in general they are great value. I also tried the fish curry which was very generous in the portion of fish and I would say probably the best curry I've had at Mamak. Dessert cone is very interesting if you don't mind getting your hands a bit sticky.

Delightful experience in Melbourne CBD. All the dishes were hot on arrival, the downside was the wait time for some dishes - Customers who ordered after us received the same dish first. Overall, the spiciness of the chicken was up to standard, and the roti was fresh and crispy. Would recommend this spot on a cold evening for dinner!

Such a great place ! Food is absolutely delicious, and always consistent. Been here a few times now, and never been disappointed. The curries are perfect, so much flavour and spice. The roti is amazing! Being able to order from a QR-code and pay at the same time is a great new way of service. Highly recommend this place

So tasty and authentic Malaysian cuisine! Mee Goreng is my favourite. Their roti are all freshly made to order. I have recommended this restaurant to a few friends and they all love it.

The smell, it was nice, and you know it's Asian. A frozen flower manager, great food and the Roti is heaven. If your looking for a Malaysian food, this is the place.

Great restaurant for your Malaysian fix. The roti is buttery soft and crispy that goes so well with the curry dips. Highly recommend the slightly spicy curry dip as its the perfect level of spice to cut through the roti. Also ordered the classic Nasi Lemak with an extra piece of chicken. The chicken was big for its size and delicious! Had to also get the green peas to balance out the meal which tasted great with a fresh crunch. Will come again!

My husband and I are their regular customers, I like the Rotti there, they are so soft and chewy, the fish curry is a must-try dish, they have different yummy dishes with good price

Got nasi goreng ($16) and sotong sambal ($22). The nasi goreng was FAR from authentic, they must have added tomato sauce in it - I could taste the tomato flavour in every spoon. Also, they used the frozen mixed carrot, peas, corn and beans veggie packet for the nasi goreng. You are better off making your own nasi goreng/fried rice at home instead of paying a visit here. The sambal sotong was slightly better, a little salty. Overall, it was utterly disappointing. The fact that they could ruin a basic Malaysian/Indonesian dish like nasi goreng says everything about the authenticity of the food here.

It wasn't bad, but the chicken satay wasn't authentic, it only marinated with salt and turmeric. It should have more spices etc etc. The peanut sauce is quite salty, the chef should have tasted it. Cuttlefish sambal also quite salty, would have been great if it wasn't that salty. On the other hand the sambal belacan is spot on, yum yum and cendol is delicious. I will go back, hopefully this time the chef or who ever that made the sambal and satay sauce do check the amount of salt they dumped in their cooking. By the way we had to ask the waiter to warm up the satay sauce as it was served COLD.

We had Nasi Lemak with curry chicken(additional $3.50). It was not bad at all. But they should include curry in the same plate as most of the other restaurants do. Its not worth paying $10.50 just for that small portion of rice, some peanuts, sambal and anchovies with 4-5 pieces of cucumbers. We also had Roti Canai with two curry dips which was good.

Loved it. Good food, quick service and friendly staff. Reasonably priced.

Stop forcing us to pay for your mistake!!! We ordered 1 rice with fish curry and the waiter brought out a big bowl of rice. 10 mins later another waiter brought out another smaller bowl of rice but we said you already gave us rice so he took it back to the kitchen. When we went to pay they charged us 2 rice and said because we ate from the big bowl of rice we have to pay!!!

Amazing food, tastefull rotis but I think the service is disadvantage for this place. We are going again

God service, food tasted like it was warmed up in a microwave as the food came out that quick and chicken was still slightly cold. Very over priced for what you get.

The food was nice but got screw on it. We've heard the waitress telling the chef that it happened again. I hope they fix their screw problem so people would still visit the place

For me, Melbourne is quite laid back so the place reminds me to just slow down, relax & enjoy. It reminds me too, the place where I came from.

Very fast service, the best Malaysia restaurant in Melbourne

Satay beef skewers were amazing with the house made satay sauce and the roti bead with sambal snd curry sauce were excellent too! my only complaint is i didn't order enough lol 😁
Wanya Malik
Didnt like the taste at all and the serving size was too small compared to their other competitors. Seriously waste of money in my opinion.

An authentic Malaysian restaurant that serves delicious rotis, satays & murtubah. Sensational!

Mamak served Malaysian cuisine in a casual environment. Their menu wasn’t large and I’d been here a few times so I’d tried most of their dishes. My favourites were their nasi lemak and ayam berempah, but I also enjoyed their range of roti. Service was pretty much non-existent but overall very decent and good value.
Des_tam
Sambal was impressive, chicken curry somewhat dry but fragrant. Lamb curry had good flavour and roti canai was reminiscent of Singapore/Malaysia

We decided to drive here because my partner was craving the Rojak.
It was my first experience so I didn’t have any expectations.
Only a few diners allowed due to current restrictions and we waited about 10-15 minutes to get a table.

We were disappointed that the Rojak was currently unavailable because that was the reason we decided to come here.

Anyway, we ended up ordering the Roti canai, Kari ayam (chicken curry), Ayam goreng (fried chicken) and vegetarian nasi goreng.

The staff were attentive and the food came out quick.

The roti was good, very soft!
I wasn’t a big fan of the chicken curry, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything special either.
The nasi goreng was good and full of flavor and you could tase the spices
The fried chicken was very good, it was very juicy and also crispy. I would come back here for the fried chicken again.

Overall the food was good. All the food had a bit of spice so those who don’t like chili may not enjoy it.

Came with friends for a hearty dinner. The rotis were soft and buttery, accompanied with generous amounts of sauce. The dishes were full of flavour and the rojak was a great mix of textures and flavours.

The last time I ate in Mamak was in Sydney in 2013. It has been about 7 years since the last time I ate this nasi lemak.

It was quite alright but I was disappointed with the fried chicken. It was a little bit plain. The sambal and anchovies helped to bring in that rich flavor. Definitely, the overall taste downgraded since the last time I tried this dish.

However, the teh tarik was nice.
Rohin
Overall very good main dishes! The rice wasn't as amazing as the lamb, which literally crumbled in your mouth

I heard good things about Mamak before visiting, but it’s a bit hit or miss. Let’s start with the hits. It’s BYO with a minimal corkage. The staff will store your chilled wine and top you up. The egg roti is fluffy and delicious (as well as the curries it’s served with). But the service is a bit slow. There are no wine glasses. The vegetable curry contained barely any vegetables and the Nasi Lemak was pretty plain. The flavours were fine but not great, and the dishes were affordable but didn’t provide value, unfortunately.

This place is packed just about any day of the week. They specialise in amazing Malaysian street food.

Had the mamak mee goreng, satay and nasi lemak and it was amazing. We were so full but there is always room for dessert so we decided on the banana roti and we were not dissapointed. It went really well with the ice cream

Highly recommend their banana roti!
Hansolo
Used to love this place. Excellent fried chicken and sambal shrimp. The rotis are fantastic too. Little disappointed the last time I was there though. Poor service, dirty table and generally sloppy plating got it 4 stars instead of 5.

Visited Mamak for dinner with the family, and we were very happy with our meal. Loved the Roti Canai which was super light and fluffy. The Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng were both very delicious and not too salty either. The Nasi Lemak with the fish curry was delightful - the fish was very tender and soft, although I feel that there was a bit too much rice to topping ratio. The Chicken Satay was good but the best part of it was the satay sauce - just amazing! You can even purchase a jar of their homemade satay although it does cost $8. For dessert, we had the Roti Pisang (banana), Roti Tisu and Ais Kacang. The roti pisang was very moorish, served warm and went perfectly with the cold ice cream. The roti tisu is so incredibly light and crispy, you almost don’t feel it. I loved the ais kacang which was super refreshing and there was hidden red bean and grass jelly inside. For drinks, we had the warm teh Tahrik, iced white coffee and iced tea with lime. Loved the coffee which was strong, and the iced tea which had a nice tartness from the lime. The teh tahrik however was a little bit too sweet for us. Overall, we had a nice meal at Mamak and left feeling satisfied. This place is super popular so get in early if you don’t want to wait in line.
Dina
I like the food, though my partner doesn't.

Dined for a quick lunch. Ordered egg roti (my favourite) & chicken satay. I also enjoyed the Malaysian tea. Everything tasty & service friendly.

Way tooo salty, noodles are slightly over cooked. Sydney’s Mamak is nicer

Possibly one of the best Malaysian food that you can get in Melbourne. This is as authentic as you can get from a Malaysian restaurant in the CBD. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for something that tastes close to real Malaysian satay, nasi lemak and roti canai. A little pricier than most Malaysian joints but definitely worth giving this a go.
Julian Lee
Absolutely shambles of a service, waited there for at least half an hour for the food. Knowing that the food did not came or no waiters check on the order until we asked. Ending up that the order did not go through the system.
FoodieQueen21
Mamak has a range of good Malaysian food. However, they are a bit lacking in seasonings. Also, the service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy.

Overall, it is a good place to grab lunch or dinner, but nothing really stood out that will make me come back for more.
Jerry Mathew
The price that is charged for the food does not match the quantity provided. In addition, the service is quite slow. We had to wait for over 5 mins for someone to come and take our order. It took around 10 mins between the first and last persons getting their meal. First place i have seen that charges for card payment. Even EFTPOS payments.
Khorry Sila
Kangkung balacan is not as good as my expectation, but it’s not bad.. the fried chicken is soooooo niceee!!! Fairly more expensive compare to other malaysia restaurants, but it still worthed.
Janna Beh
Less than average Malaysian cuisine. As a Malaysian-born, the flavours aren't as authentic and the portions are terribly small for the price. Disappointed as authentic "Mamak" stores in Malaysia are known as late night joints where you can go for a nice Indian-Malaysian cuisine for really cheap prices.
Full Time Wholesomeness
Short menu but with great service! Highly recommend their Teh Tarik, what an amazing discovery at their restaurant! Recommended by my Singaporean friend whom took me on a late Friday night dinner. As well crawled in hangry and got our two dishes (vegetarian Nasi Lemak and Mee Goreng) within 5 minutes!!!

Been here many times, but this time just came in for desserts. Had the roti tisu, cendol and ais kachang. We reached this place at 9.30pm on Saturday and it was full. We were lucky enough to get a table soon. I wasn't a fan of ais kachang due to the rose syrup but that is just my preference. All other desserts were amazing.
Kingsley Kung
Terrible service with this waitress! But the food is good taste! Will going to do take away next time! Won't recommend my friends to come as well!
Sharon Jong
Being a Malaysian, the food here was not really quite up to the standard we had back at home. However, their roti canai (plain ones) was not bad and not to forget their mee goreng. I asked for extra spicy however it wasn't even spicy to be honest. The chendol was disappointing as you can tell that the chendol itself was being taken out from the freezer (it was soft on the outside and icey hard on the inside which is not good). The murtabak was a waste of money sadly. However the satays were spot on! I would definitely go back for their satays and roti canai. But not others. I also hope that they'd expand their menu as they don't have much varieties to choose from.

Would recommend this place if you want to experience authentic Malaysian food. Love the Roti bom and Chicken Satay! Will def come back for it!

Very busy during lunch time. However fast service and food was serve in a few minutes .

Prefer the chicken and prawns

Chicken - taste 4/5
Price 2/5 pricy for $14

Prawn - taste 3/5 not fresh but the chillin was good
Price 2/5 very pricy for $16

Teh Tarik was $4.5 which is also pricy .. would try the Roti next time which it’s seems better
Sylvia's POV
If you want to avoid the crowd, come as early as possible. Mamak is a popular destination for quality Malay food. The prices are slightly above average, but they do offer some weekly specials which alternate daily.
We ordered some roti with onion (Roti Bawang), lamb curry (Kari Kambing), and some fried chicken (Ayam Goreng).
The portions are plentiful, we ended up taking away a piece of chicken. All the dishes were tasted authentic and were packed with flavour.

Overall score: 17/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: generous Malaysian food portions here
*
Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I really enjoyed the fried chicken that came with the nasi lemak. It was crispy and had some curry seasoning, which made me reminiscent of fried chickens in small Malay stalls back in Malaysia. The sambal also packed the right amount of spice, although it would have been better if they added just a bit of sugar. Anchovies and peanuts were crunchy and well-baked. My only issue is with the rice - more santan / coconut milk would have made the rice more fragrant and delicious
*
Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - the place looks modern, clean and beautiful. Possible to bring colleagues here.
*
Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- while I got it as a MealPal meal, I have to say that Mamak is very generous with their portions. It’s the largest mealpal I had and is enough for two meals actually!
*
Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - the meals were packed well, with a separate box for the chilli and fried chicken.
*
Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️- Food was ready when I arrived. Probably better to come earlier since they prepare way in advance. My meal was warm and fresh when I had it though.

Came here again today having visited about 18 months ago when there was a cue out the front on a Saturday night. Today during lunch hour, Mamak was about half full and doing s good trade with quick turnover or tables. The lunch specials are worth looking at with considerable savings of $’s. $14 for my lamb curry and rice that was a generous portion size.
Staff are efficient and friendly. Water in the table straight away, order taken as soon as I’d looked at it and knew what I wanted.
You can view one of the chefs from the street as the kitchen is at the front.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Right near corner of Elizabeth Street so good tram and bus access.

I tried this restaurant via MealPal.. was quite happy to see this dish on the MealPal menu- nasi lemak with friend chicken.. the portions were pretty big, the sambal chili was also very tasty, the fried chicken was crispy and had quite a strong taste of spices, also the coconut rice was ever so fragrant.. great for a quick takeaway meal and definitely will go back one day to try their other food selections..
Onlybeyoutothefull
Ordered the Nasi Goreng, the curry chicken and the roti with egg.

The Nasi Goreng was delicious but quite spicy. This was my favourite dish.

The curry chicken was spicy and had herbs, it was different to what I was expecting but still good.

The roti was soft and went well with the side dips but was expecting something more.

I would say its good and its in your price range, if you are a student. Which is not bad, and its located in the main CBD of melbourne. I like the chicken curry and the rice.

This place does an amazing Teh Tarik, highly recommend. Roti is flaky which is great, but average. Would only come back for the teh Tarik to the honest, food doesn’t compare to the Mamaks in Malaysia.

Finally came here after ages walking past it. I really loved Mamak - I know why it's always busy now!

Came early on a Friday night, and lucky we did! The restaurant filled up real quick. Ordered the Nasi Lemak with added fried chicken, half dozen Chicken Satay and Roti Canai.

First to come was the Roti Canai. Lovely, buttery and soft roti and the curry dips were so good! One mild and one a little spicier. This was a really yummy appetiser for the next two dishes we had.

Nasi Lemak was next to come out. Fragrant coconut rice served with peanuts, egg, fresh cucumber and delicious fried anchovies. We added the fried chicken which was super tasty - crispy skin and juicy meat!

Lastly, Chicken Satay. Oh my goodness, this was my favourite of the night! Satay sauce was so good I was spooning it onto everything I had! The chicken was cooked really well. It was served with fresh cucumber and onion - perfect accompaniments!

Definitely coming back for more satay and to try the rest of the menu!

Service was abit slow to take our order however the food was real quick. Teh tarik was one of the best ive tried and ive been to malaysia before. Really good roti chenai aswell :)

My Malaysian friend decided to take me to this place at my request of having Malaysian food. I surely wasn't disappointed at this place. Nice cosy place with a good seating area for many people.
It was disappointing to see that they didn't do laksa here, however it was a yes to satay chicken. So got ourselves the satay chicken, mee goreng, rotti chennai and the teah Tarik.

All these were quite superb very close to the authentic malaysian taste as well. Especially the mee goreng, quite well seasoned and had the proteins like chicken, fried bean curd which you'd find often. Made sure to let the waiters know about the quality as well.

My complain would be with the pricing and the quantity associated with it. Other than that, a very good experience!
Food Monkey
Very casual yet super tasty and cozy Malay place. I like the concept of the whole roti section. Simple yet nice menu- bringing best of from India, indo and ofcourse Malay cuisine. The crispy chicken with coconut rice is very pleasant. Then there is our favourite tetar and good old lemon syrup juice. We loved it and now a regular.
Louise India Suckling
I ordered the chicken satay and received undercooked chicken. The staff were lovely about it and ordered me a new dish as well as offering a free beverage. However, when my new dish came, the chicken was still undercooked. I am saddened because all the other reviews are so good. I hope this was a one off.
Fendi
Came here with my friends for quick lunch. I wanted to order the nasi lemak with fried chicken but the staff say i should wait about 18 minutes which is abit ridiculous. So ended up i order mee goreng which is not bad.
Hell's Kitchen
Great fusion of indian and chinese Malaysian food.
Booked a table for 8 at peak hour on a weekeday and it came as no surprise that the place was extremely busy. Good overall exeprience, the curries are very flavorful and the unique rottis really give you something to remember. Prices are slightly higher than your average malaysian restaurant in the city but id say its worth it.
Shun Liu
This place is really serves dishes at a very nice standard, I loved my Nasi Lemak, Fried Chicken, Roti and Satay. Although might not be the most authentic, this is definitely best to my liking.
Ravindranath Wickramanayake
Used to be one of the best Malaysian food places in melbourbe I used to love this place. Went there with family today for boxing day and got food poisoning everybody started throwing up and lose motion.
Gee
It’s been years since I’ve been here and it was just as good as I remember. Wasn’t overly busy on a Monday night. The satay chicken always have that smoky flavour that I love. Roti’s were as good as ever and the rojak was something different. Will be back - it’s been too long!
Noor Hida Halim
The best satay in Melbourne that i tried. Their specialty, the sambal sotong was marvelous and one if its kind. You can't find that sambal sotong anywhere else in Melbourne. The roti canai was crispy and fluffy on the outside and soft in the inside. Great place to hangout with family and friends.

R A T E: 3.7/5

☆彡Went here yesterday for 6:30pm dinner. Instant 1:1 seating, seemed relatively busy. Ordered: roti canai ($8), nasi lemak and roti telur bawang ($9.5) and cham

☆The good:
- extremely fast service (roti canai came within 2minutes!)
- clean, spacious interior (medium size place)
- cham (half coffee, half tea) is delicious
- i like the open-kitchen type atmosphere

☆Not so good:
- portion of roti canai is small

Overall: it is just a standard malaysian cuisine to fill ROTI cravings (with some other menu options too).

Soundararajan K
Authentic Malaysian food. All items are overpriced compared to other malaysian restaurants in the region. However quality of the food is good.
Sunny Days Melbourne
This is the place for the best and most authentic mee goreng. Full of wok hei and generous amounts of prawns, nowhere else can beat them on this dish.
Plus it's one of the only places in Melbourne to have Roti Tisu - freshly made and presented like a giant cone drizzled with condensed milk, it tastes amazing!
Some Bunee Loves Food
I like their hot teh tarik drinks here. Can never get enough of the bubbly, creaminess sweet tea. Their skewers are ok only but seems like a popular thing to get here. The noodles are flavourful, a kick of chilli and tasty. Recommended!
Tinmans Treats
I've dined here a free times. This Sydney restaurant has done pretty well in Melbourne with its Malaysian fare. I really like the roti canai and curry chicken. I had the mee goreng with meal pal. It wasn't my favourite mamak dish but it was cooked well and had flavour. Perhaps a bit too tomatoey for my liking.
J0yy173
Revisited today as we were craving some Malaysian favourites. In past visits, we always enjoyed their roti, curries and Mee Goreng. The menu has enough options to satisfy the varied palettes.

We both ordered the Mee Goreng, with normal and Maggi noodles. Lots of flavour with a balanced amount of chilli to give it a tasty kick and we loved their good use of spices to give the dishes an appealing fragrance. The Teh Tarik (tea with sweetened condensed milk) was delicious.

As someone who grew up in Malaysia / Singapore eating Cendol regularly however, this dessert didn't pass today. The very important jelly-like "noodles" are normally a little chewy but today had the consistency of mashed potato! The coconut milk and gula melaka (palm sugar syrup) were really watery, so there was little flavour.

Casual dining with quick, on-point service makes this a relaxing place to get a tasty bite. It's not the most comfortable spot if you're on the stool, so better suited for a quick bite than a long lunch/dinner catch up.
AnotherAsianAbroad
Got Mamak via ubereats. I liked my chicken satay and my boyfriend liked his curry and roti. Overall good food but not sure if I would rush back to order again
Maylene Mikaelson
This is the place to go to for belachan dishes, fresh roti dishes or nasi lemak special. A bit on the pricey side. Service is quick even when it's full house which is often. This is actually a Sydney originated restaurant. In Chatswood, people wait in a queue outside. What annoys me is that they've removed their super hot sambal and replaced it with this sugary chili paste. That's not how nasi lemak is served in Malaysia. It's all about the quality of the coconut rice and sambal. The super hot sambal should be available as an option. Without it, there isn't much reason for me to buy nasi lemak dishes here for about $2-3 more than other places.
Melissa Wong
Came here for the nasi lemak and sambal sotong. The sambal sotong is so good. It reminds me of home. The sotong is so soft. A bit expensive but it's worth it. I think this is the only place that serves the best Malaysian sambal sotong in Melbourne.
Cheliv
C: Liv took me here for my first time ever having Malaysian Cuisine. And of course she would choose a place where it’s all spice. I really really liked the Roti. The bread was soft and there were many choices of curries to dip in. I also ordered the teh tarik to drink which was way way too sweet for me and I had to dilute it with water but this is probably my own personal preference. Had a taste of Liv’s Milo ais which I thought was really good. Overall, I was very impressed with this place and would go again.

L: I’m always more critical of Malaysian restaurants as I’m from Malaysia. This place really met my expectations. The Nasi Lemak was authentic and filling. The roti itself was a bit lacking as it was small and made differently but overall with the dahl and chicken curry, it was good. I also got the Milo ais as I wanted to see if it tasted the same as in Malaysia and it was really good. Would definitely come back here again and will recommend to my other friends who haven’t tried Malaysian cuisine.
The Roze Review
Had a quick lunch at Mamak and was very happy with what I received.
I had the satay chicken skewers which were fantastic and the sweet peanut sauce was full of flavour. I also ordered the roti which was perfectly paired with 3 curry sauces, all of them delicious.
Next time I would like to explore the menus further but this was a great experience.
Flying Forward
Very popular with Malaysians, Indonesians and Singaporeans, Mamak was very busy in the first year of opening. Not as busy these days but still going strong.
All the roti are freshly made, and the roti canai was flakey and pillowy, but somehow a little dry and not as hot as freshly off the grill.
Nasi lemak - coconut rice had good flavour, as did the sambal. I had the curry fish, which was meaty, flaky and the natural oils of the fish went well in the curry.

Hmm I’m not a fan of this place.. but it’s way better than Paparich.. Among this I like the roti tissue the most, I like it with icecream better. The mi goreng was not bad.. Others are just not attractive.. Would like to try some other dishes next time.

Have been a fan of Mamak for 2+ years now and have used them for some catering events.

They're pretty much consistent with food preparation and has become a safe option in terms of ordering in for dinner and lunch.

Faves would be their Mee Goreng (Extra Spicy) and their Rendang. Ohhh their Rendang is superb. Albeit I wished their portioning was what it was in 2016.

They do have a Office / Lunch Special in the afternoons.

Their Roti / Pratas are fluffy and delicious. It's still a goto for my wife.

They are family and pram friendly. Albeit, be mindful they can get packed, so you might want to call in advance.
Rajmohan
Food quality has dropped drastically not like it use to be. Don’t do takeaway from here high priced and lot less in quantity and average taste
Custardbun
I used to be a regular at Mamak, but the food appears to have dropped in quality of late. The roti chanai is still awesome, but I did not enjoy the murtabak or the mee goreng. Bring back the quality and the queues will be back!
Vivian
Unbelievably good Malaysian Cuisine! The Roti which is what they are famous for was well worth the hype , the accompanying currys although plain looking had nice complexity in their flavours. The nasi lemak was also great. Overall the food here is not only of good value but fast, authentic and delicious
Henry Suhendra
Was in Melbourne for work and keen to try Malaysian food for dinner. Place was quite packed for week night. A bit dissapointed with the limited menu selections (should have looked at the menu before coming) as the place seemed to specialize in roti an rice dish. Ordered Nasi Lemak which was fragrant and tasty. Added sambal sotong and satay as extra but I feel both way dishes were too sweet. OK dinner but quite pricey for the type of food.
Streaky Eats
Had the nasi lemak with fried chicken and kopi tarik for a drink.

The kopi tarik taste like the ones in Malaysia. Definitely pulled as seen with the big irregular bubbles in the foam. It was a little too sweet but it nailed on the taste, so order it less sweet and it'll hit the spot.

Nasi lemak - sambal was on the spicy side but it's nice and when mixed together with the rice, anchovies and peanuts (if you eat it this way) then it's not spicy. The rice was cooked well, very loose, no lumps and grains doesn't stick to each other. The anchovies were nice and crunchy and the peanuts were not soft or stale.

The fried chicken was a big piece of thigh, happy with that. Marinade and spices were very similar to the mamaks in Malaysia. No signs of re-fried day old chicken found, it's a fresh piece.

Food : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I ordered a roti canai and 1/2 dozen of chicken satay - Both taste good
Price : ⭐️⭐️ I found it a bit expensive for the portion size
Service : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good service
Ambience : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Busy place but enough room. Pretty noisy, lively

The food at this place has always been good. They offer different combinations of meat or vegetable curries with rice. Great value for money for a quick and filling lunch.

the staff are very rude expecially one of the lady asked us to wait outside the shop at the waiting board or stand during the cold winter night....we will ask to get out of the shop to wait outside for our seat or table...

I really like Sydney’s Mamak, but the Melbourne one never lived up to the same standard. As it’s been a while since I’ve been back, and there’s a been a heap of positive reviews, I thought why not give it another go.

Unfortunately I was reminded of why I’m not a fan of Melbourne’s Mamak. The nasi lemak was such a let down. I found the rice to side dish ratio off, there was so much rice. I love coconut rice so I could forgive the amount, but it lacked the coconut flavour I was expecting. The roti canai was good but nothing mind blowing. Maybe it’s my high expectations but I found the food pretty ordinary.
Erajasminegriffin
I really loved the lamb curry! Because it’s was authentic and you could tell it was cooked slowly and well built up. The owners need to employ more staff as they’re very busy!

Mamak for sure serves one of the best rotis in melhourne. We are regular customers and were never disappointed. Everything we have had there was authentic and delicious.

After reading a fellow reviewer on here from Vegetarian Food Lover, it was enough to seal the deal for Icebear to give Mamak a shot (we usually go to Papparich for the mockmeats).

Icebear had Roti Canai and the Butter Roti with just the dhal dipping sauce and also ordered a portion of the veg curry to have extra saucy goodness for the rotis. The Butter Roti won out in the end because it was just that little bit crispier and well, melty buttery goodness. The veg curry I feel like probably had the same base as the dhal dipping sauce which was amazing but didn’t get a perfect score due to Icebear hating on aubergines. Icebear also picked at my migoreng which was probably one of the best we’ve had in Melbourne.

DO: save room for dessert! The Roti Tisu is a magical crispy wafer thin cone with sugar on the inside. It really doesn’t even need the icecream - we found pairing it with iced milo was the better flavour profile.
DON’T: order the rotis via foodora - they need to be enjoyed on site straight away. It’s no longer fun when it’s cold.
TRY: checking out the various loyalty apps for special promo offers which may entitle you to some discounts.
Vegetarian Food Lover
My new favorite Malaysian restaurant in Melbourne. I had the Maggie goreng vegetarian, roti canai with dhal curry, egg & onion roti with dharl curry, roti pisang (banana roti with ice cream - a bit too sweet for me). Don’t recommend having the sambal sauce as it is not vegetarian. All dishes were delicious. Service was friendly & very fast. Toilet facilities were amazingly clean! Will come back for the Maggie goreng.

Always a busy place on a sat night and sometimes there are queues outside. It’s our regular Malaysian in the city and never disappoints.
Had the chicken curry which was excellent. If you don’t like it too hot you better ask because it has a hot kick to it! Bit of a tip: rice are big serves so if you are sharing a curry you can probably get by with one serve along with a side dish. Have a cold Teh Tarik with it. Roti canai is tasty too. Best roti in melb!
Finished with banana roti. All tasty!

Finally went to Mamak after hearing good things about this place. I have to say the food was a bit underwhelming considering the positive reviews I heard.

The food was good, but nothing too out of the ordinary that would make me want to go for more. I went with my friends and I ordered the Nasi Lemak while they ordered the Mee Goreng. We also ordered the Roti canai to try out their roti.

Roti canai - the roti was a bit inconsistent. Some parts were super flakey and soft but other parts will be dense and hard to pull apart after it sitting there for a good 5 minutes. The curries that came with the roti were quite balanced and not too spicy. Both had different flavour profiles, so that was a nice touch (I believe one is vegetarian and the other had a meat base).

Mee Goreng - I tried my friend's mee goreng and I think it was the highlight of the night. The noodles were packed with spices and well balanced flavours, and the noodles were not overcooked. The portion was decent as well.

Nasi Lemak - great portioning and came with many side dishes where I would just mix it all up and eat together. It came with fried fish, cucumbers, hot sauce, peanuts, and half an egg. I added the fish curry, which was good but nothing too out of the ordinary. Good amount of curry spice, but the hot sauce on the plate was what added to the full spiciness of the dish. The fish was soft and not fishy. The coconut rice didnt have much coconut taste to it, but everything put together completed the dish as it gave it texture and different flavour profiles. I think I would opt for curry chicken or fried chicken instead next time though.

Overall, good balanced meals but nothing too out of the ordinary that will make me highly recommend this place. Will like to come back and try their Nasi Goreng and fried chicken.

I personally felt that this place did not deliver what authentic Malaysian food should be. Ordered a Nasi Lemak with curry, whilst the coconut rice was on the sweeter side, they could have been more generous with the cucumbers. My cousin ordered a mee mamak goreng - the noodles were sweet and soggy, tasted slightly bland.

I'm a non-Malaysian who doesn't know much about the cuisine nor what the dishes should taste like. I also came here because of a Liven promotion that gave me a fat discount off my bill.

Food -
Roti Canai: I like my roti crispier and more buttery so perhaps I should’ve just ordered the Roti Planta or Tisu as I found the Canai underwhelming. Curry dips were fairly good. Price is quite reasonable by Melbourne CBD standards.
Nasi lemak w/ lamb curry: Lamb curry tender and flavourful, very nice. Coconut rice delicious thanks to the various juices/oils of the dish that seeped a little on the leaf under the rice - this threw out any idea I had of being able to replicate this dish at home. Sambal served very cold but flavourful. Fried anchovies, peanuts and cucumber fresh and of quality. Price is bordering on steep.

Service -
It was a packed restaurant so the waitresses were very busy hurrying around. Despite this, all except one were friendly, genuine and hospitable when they gave their attention to me. My request for a takeaway box seemed to have been completely forgotten, but I’m not too fussed as I ended up just finishing my food.

Atmosphere -
The menu prices for mains aren’t cheap so you’d expect the inside to be a bit nicer. It’s definitely more of a functional interior than a nice-looking interior.

Worth a try to see why they're so packed everyday.

Always been a customer here but not anymore .Went there for dinner, ordered nasi lemak with curry chicken and cendol, the staff walked away without double checking my order, so I assumed she got everything correct. Cendol was ok but then they served the nasi lemak with fried chicken instead. Told the staff that it was supposed to be curry chicken, but the girl whom took my order insisted I ordered fried chicken, I repeated three times that I am 100%sure I said curry chicken. Instead of offering an exchange she went on by saying ‘are you sure? Cuz I wrote down fried chicken on my order slip’. Long story short, she ended up changing it to curry chicken but slammed the food on the table and walked away, what kind of customer service is this, horrible attitude, will not return.
Hello. Imnikki
I agree wholeheartedly with Mustard that Mamak's strength lies with their roti and satay.

We ordered delivery from Mamak and was pleased that the roti arrived neatly packed in a foil box, keeping it warm and preventing it from turning soggy. The roti was soft, and retained its signature flaky skin. The accompanying three sauces - dahl, curry and spicy sambal, each had its own distinct flavours that complement the roti nicely.

The chicken satay was moist and tender, and I very much enjoyed the abundance of chopped nuts in the peanut sauce which gave it another element of texture.

The mee goreng was satisfactory, but it left no lasting impression.

Can't comment on the service, or lack of thereof judging by the other reviews, as we did not dine in.
Curiosity got the better and we finally tried out Mamak that usually has lines out the front. Ordered the roti that it's well known for and some noodles.

The wait for the roti was quite long as you can see the chef's making it fresh at the counter. Both dishes was ok for portion size and taste but nothing very amazing.

Food: The mee goreng is perfectly spicy with a good mix of ingredients to go with the noodles.

Satay skewers are also great. The sauce is of a thick, chunky texture, with a lovely sweet taste. I’d recommend chicken over beef, as the latter is a bit tough.

Of course, you can’t get past their famous roti. Slightly crispy yet soft and fluffy too. It comes with two curry dips (one spicy, one more like a dhal) and sambal.

Price: Pretty good value for a CBD restaurant. The nasi goreng is a must.

Less value for the main dishes, because they don’t come with rice, which costs $3 extra. A bit steep in my opinion, especially for something like the belachan which is a pretty small serving in itself.

I also wish you could order the roti alone. For $7.50, you get a small piece which doesn’t accomodate the amount of curry that comes with it.

Service: Quick and efficient. Most of the workers are friendly but there was one girl who was very sour-faced.

Read some reviews on this place. Was passing by so walked in and try. Presentation very good. Looks exactly like back home. The roti is really good. Nice and soft. Disappointed by the curry and sambal. Was served cold. Nasi Lemak looks good to. Tasted ok. Not the best. The sambal was icy cold. Like it was taken out to thaw. Not heated up. And tasted like it wasn’t cooked throughly. I would give a thumb up for their teh halia. Having sugar rush now. Forgot to tell them “kurang manis “

Tried the Kari Ikan which was on lunch specials and have to say it was really tasty, the fish with okra and eggplant curry with rice was perfect and the portions size was perfect, a good malayasian joint in the CBD

This place needs sound proofing. Food is great but atmosphere just ruins the mood. Went here to enjoy a meal with friends but we couldn’t hear each other at all.

This place serves one of the best authentic curry of Malaysia. They serve many varieties of roti which is freshly made. The lamb murutabak was very good and the kari ayam. But I totally enjoyed the roti pisang and roti tisu which is served with ice cream 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Mamak!! What an amazing find!
We accidentally entered this place last evening for a quick bite. Ended up ordering roti telur and chicken satay.
Peanut sauce with the Satay was quite different from the usual served elsewhere... but no complains ... absolutely delicious.. it elevated the dish to next level.
Roti telur came with the lentil curry and sambal ...it’s so similar to the Indian curry and paratha.
But I feel, if the roti dishes are also served with the satay peanut sauce... it would be amazing !! The combo is killer 😬
To sum up .... had a pretty satisfying meal. I am definitely coming back for trying some more variety!!

I come here just for the roti and the occasional satay skewer, not sure if there's a place in Melbourne that does a better roti. I've come here before and tried their other dishes but really their strengths are their roti.

Got the roti canai which was served with a curry, dhal and their spicy sambal. Roti was nice and fluffy yet flakey on the outside, perfect vehicle to soak up all those sauces. The sambal was perfect, nice amount of spice (for me) with a distinct shrimp/anchovy flavour, very addictive. Wish they had an easy protein add-on to the meal.

I also got their roti tisu with the same setup but the roti was a spiral of crispy roti tissue. Buttery and sweet, you might want to share this one or not! I opted for the savory version and it paired extremely well with the sauces.

Oddly satisfying considering there was hardly any protein consumed.

Had a quick lunch of Roti Canai and chicken and beef satay skewers. Simple and delicious Malaysian hawker style food. We will definitely be making a return visit.

Rating 3.8
Service ★★★
Food ★★★★★
Ambience ★★★★

Love mamak! The restaurant is always busy yet their food quality is always good and consistent. My favourite has got to be their mamak mee goreng and fried chicken!

Our love for Malaysian cuisine and ratings on google made us choose this place.

There is nothing worth talking about this place or.food. We are surprised by the fellow Zomatians' reviews who claimed that this place was way better than PappaRich.

The quality and the taste is so bad that we chose to not write an elaborate review of the food ordered. Not one single dish worth mentioning. Prices are way high compared to the quality of food.

AVOID!!

Mamak is a place that we visit frequently. My fav is definitely the roti canai. The roti is chewy and flaky and it goes so well with the chilli and dhal. Their fried chicken reminded me so much of the ones that I had in Malaysia/Singapore.
During my recent visit, I ordered a murtabak and it is definitely not their specialty. The murtabak that I know/remember should be very saucy with multiple layer of thinly stretched dough and pan fried in a lot of oil.
Well, if you are visiting Mamak, you can go wrong with their roti canai, mee goreng, nasi goreng, fried chicken and any kind of curries. Enjoy!

Good selection of food available on the menu. Food was fast and terrific. Plenty of food on the plate as well. Service was very prompt. Recommended!

Menu has all the Malaysian classics. Can fit groups in with advanced booking.
Roti canai, $7.5, flaky tasty roti, accompanying curries are nice but have had better especially for the high price of 1 piece. When I asked for another piece of roti that cost $7.5 which is annoying that you can't just order a single piece without the accompaniments.
Chicken Satay, $13 for 6, very good satay dipping sauce.
1.2% surcharge from credit cards.
Clean simple bathrooms.
