Review Nine Elephants - Melbourne

Robbo Kris
Its been a few years since we last dined at this Thai Restaurant. They have move a few shopfronts down the road from when I last visited. The food is always extremely tastey. I had the lunch time special of chicken stir fry noodles which was delicious. I had some takeaway prawn fried rice and satay chicken which was also very good. This place is already busy so best to book as its not a large venue.

During non-peak hours, Nine Elephants offers diners an exquisite experience in Thai-styled dishes in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The waitress who served us had a fantastic memory of the dishes ordered without having to jot anything down (we ordered about 5 or 6 dishes in total, 3 of them customised to a meat of our choice). Food was served promptly and to order. The Thai iced milk tea served here could be said to be better tasting than similar restaurants within the vicinity. To incentivise customers paying in cash, a 10% discount off the final bill rounds off a pleasant evening dinner with friends.

I went here for my birthday dinner with 5 friends, the food was lovely and really reasonablly priced. The staff was really nice and served us quickly. Loved the vibe of the place. I will definitely go there again

Great service and lovely food. Entree were lovely and not really that hot, main was delicious however I had to order it with no chilli as I am not a fan of overly hot food. Dessert was absolutely delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful answering any questions we had and was able to deliver food within reasonable time from ordering.. The Ice Coffee is deliciously strong and sweet. Would definitely recommend and also go back. Satay Chicken wrapped in Roti with peanut sauce. Drunken Chicken.

Staff were very accomodating from the moment we walked in the door, seated quickly with noise levels to a minimum. NE have a vast variety of menu options, and clearly indicate which dishes are spicy and those without. I recommend the Nine Signature Spaghetti ☝️

Dined in for dinner on monday, its quite and calm. Good ambience and a decent list of drinks menu. In terms of customer service and food quality they have lots of room to improve.

I lovved nine elephants signature spaghetti. It was fresh, vegetables were crunchy. Usually Thai dishes will be lite sweet, but this one was exception. All other dishes were good too, except chive dumplings. It was very oily and it wasn’t like usual dumplings, it was deep fried. You get Singha beer jugs. Definitely will come back 👍

Great food, although i noticed the fried rice portioned has decreased quite abit since I first visited a couple of years ago. As many has commented, there's spicy and there Thai level's spicy. So be careful what you asked for ;) Lunch time is extremely busy and if you dont have a booking, good luck. Dinner is much quieter. Edit: they are no longer serve really spicy food which is very disappointing. If you want a dish to be spicy, they provide chilli on the side. My suspicion is someone has complained about the food here being too spicy. If that's correct, that person shouldn't be eating Thai food. I mean what's next, non spicy Sichuan food?

Absolutely fabulous dishes!!!!The best Thai food in Melbourne. i will definitely order again.

Absolutely delicious food and you get to customise almost all the recipes to vegetarian/vegan if needed! Went in pretty late at night (pre-corona days) with a couple of friends and the chef cooked us all up a feast!! Loved absolutely everything we tried!!

Came here for lunch the other day. Service was good and food came out relatively quick. I ordered the crispy pork belly and was pretty delicious.

3.5
We had a farewell and Christmas catchup lunch with the team today and a full house in the restaurant. I tried the wide noodles chicken pad se ew with extra chilli today.. really tasty and not oily like this dish can be elsewhere. I went a bit crazy of the chilli and the heat was fairly intense. Everyone else enjoyed their dishes and the pad Thai looked especially good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previous Review
Nine Elephants is the go to restaurant for self funded team work lunches as the food is generally pretty reliable, quite affordable and you can normally be in and out within the hour. I've been here several times this year and generally alternate between Gang Massaman or the chicken pad see ew. Staff are generally pretty quick at taking your order and I can only remember one occasion when the dishes haven't come out in relative quick succession. It should be noted that they do come out as cooked rather than en mass. Bookings are recommended for Thursday/Friday lunches as it's always been full to chockers when we've gone in on those days.
Good honest Thai food served quick.
👍🏽
The first thing you get told upon entering is that there are no tables and that they’re fully booked. There were tables outside which I enquired about and the response I got was “you can sit outside but if it rains there’s no tables inside”.
I decided to order takeaway so I could take it back to work. The food was given to me in 2 round containers so I asked for a bag. There is a sign at the front informing that there’s a surcharge 30c surcharge for a bag. But their response to me when I asked was that they had no bags. I told them that I would happily pay the surcharge if they had any bags left. It was then they agreed to hand over the paper bags that you would normally get from ordering takeaway.
Aside from the terrible and rude service, the food was average and not worth another visit. The taste and texture of noodles used is the dried type you would find at Coles or Woolworths.
Foods are very nice. Been there many times. Just hard to get a table. Tom yum soup is not great. Tastes weird and some dishes can be super spicy or salty.
Svenja Grabo
Besides the venue not being my favourite, I was pleasantly surprised with the small restaurant. Loved the food and quick service.
Be cautious when using Zomato Gold. This restaurant expects you to tell every waitress when terms and conditions state to tell one staff member, which i did. Restaurant did not honour Zomato Gold and accused me of lying. Even after you give in and accept to pay full price, waitress did not print bill and kept the debacle going. Rude, embarrassing and a scam to get people in and deny gold benefits.
Mr.T
Basic ingredients used in all dishes ordered. Same vegetables used as well in various orders. For example, sliced capsicums, sliced mushrooms which had no finesse. Felt like a basic meal but at a costly price. Service was also poor in resolving any issues. Was definitely not value for money
Small, slightly fancy Thai restaurant. Had the cripsy pork salad and red duck curry. Both were quite good. Very thoughtful and friendly service. Would definitely be back to try more dishes when I'm in the area.
The place is not very spacious, though wasnt too crampy. The staffs were friendly and food took a reasonable time though being seated at the corner it was hard to call someone up.
My pork red curry was okay. It was too spicy for me so they offered to fix it, but unfortunately there wasnt much difference. Taste wise, it was okay except that the spice kind of overpowered other aspects and it was bit thicker than I'd like. Portion was also tad bit small for the price. Rice is not included so thats an extra.
The curry fried rice was yummy though. The flavour was just great and there were lots of vegs, shrooms and tofu in there. Not too dry nor wet. I do think there could be more rice though to go with other ingredients.
Overall it was an okay experience, especially with the zomato gold.
( follow for more!✨)
xx,joelle
Came here after work. Place is quite cosy. I ordered the Pad Thai and really enjoyed it. It was different to most Thai restaurants as it had a slight kick to it which I loved! Will definitely be back
A restraunt full of yummy thai delicacies ever...I have tried the Chicken Fried rice here which was really made very good blended with sprouts and spices...I can rate 5 out of 5 for the taste of the food...its a crowded place but worth a try!!!
I’ve never given one star to a restaurant! I ordered through Deliveroo recently and got my food fairly quickly! Although upon opening our chicken curry, smelt delicious, the container was half full and I kid you not, had no more than 5 paper thin pieces of chicken and some veggies! Not even half a serve! Priced at $20.00 I was quite shocked. I called the restaurant and they really didn’t care! Other food ordered was ok! Will not be ordering from you guys again! Sorry!
Nice place but not possible to do a walkin for lunch, need to book and the place is small with few tables. Food is really good would surely visit again.
Flavourful and simple Thai place in Docklands! Pretty great place for Vegetarians.
Ordered:
🍞 Tofu Hom Pah (v): 4 pieces of deep fried tofu wrapped with warm roti bread topped with homemade peanut sauce ($8.00)
🌯 Veg Spring Rolls (v): 4 pieces of homemade deep fried vegetable spring rolls served with Thai sweet chilli sauce ($7.00)
🍝 Pad See-Ew: Flat rice noodles stir fried with dark soy sauce, Chinese broccoli, vegetables and beef ($13.00)
Review:
Incredibly affordable and filling food...especially for dinner.
The Tofu Hom Pha was an interesting entree dish, where the roti is wrapped with tofu. Although the elements are simple, I enjoyed the innovation behind it since I've never seen this dish at a Thai restaurant before!
The Pad See-Ew was as heavy and soulful as I imagined it to be. Dark, intense flavours filled me to the brim and I could only take it home as it became a little overwhelming. They charged a disappointing 20 cents for a takeaway box though :(
However, the flavours were on point.
Interior was a bit gaudy. The blue wall and countertop was a bit confronting and a big contrast to the orange theme, but the elephant themed decor was cute.
On top of the 20 cent takeaway box, they pass the surcharge on card payments to the customer :(.
Very Very small place, "RUDE AND IMPOLITE" staff, definitely recommend your staff to undergo some training on how to behave with customers. Extremely Average food wise!!! there was nothing this restaurant offers, that's not available in other Thai restaurants in Mel. Wont be going there again and would spread the word among my friends who work nearby too. DISAPPOINTED!
Quite a simple and small place that is known for Thai Food.
Ordered Fish Cakes, Fried Rice and Spring Roll. Everything we ordered (except fish cakes, which were chewy and bad) was decent, nothing exceptional though.
Bookings would be great. Service was quick and efficient. Good options for Vegans and Vegetarians.
Average food. Terrible customer service. Long wait on a quiet day. Wrong or incomplete dishes served. Attitude problem. No compensation, discount, apology offered.
Highly recommended for this thai restaurant.
I have been there many times because food are original thai taste same as you eat in Thailand.
Location in CBD but prices are not expensive
My friends and I decided to venture out to Docklands to satisfy our Thai cravings at this restaurant. Walking in, the restaurant is quiet, with a small and cozy setting. I wouldn’t come without booking a table as with ample seating and space, you’re probably going to have to wait outside for a table.
As the menu offers a large variety of entrees, we couldn’t help ourselves but order 3 of the best sounding ones in our opinion. The Salt and Spicy soft shell crab offered that perfect crunch with a kick of spicy flavour. Next, the Coconut Prawns- deep fried prawns and coated with shredded coconut, this was my favourite entree as it tasted crispy and delicious with the serve of Thai sweet chilli sauce. The last entree we ordered was something a little different called the Gai Hom Pah. They were these 4 pieces of roti bread, rolled up with Chicken satay and seasoned with an abundance of peanut sauce. This was good, however, we couldn’t taste not see much of the chicken satay in the rolls. For the most part, I was just eating the roti with peanut sauce.
As for the mains, we couldn’t go past the Prawn Pad Thai- a signature Thai dish that we can never get sick of and Nine Elephants version was just superb, not to mention those prawns were big and juicy! For a more mild curry, we went with the Yellow curry- which virtually wasn’t spicy at all! The potatoes were cooked until soft and had well and truly soaked up the flavours of the curry, as did the other vegetables. Overall, a superb curry that I would have over and over again, I’ll definitely be back for more one day!
Ambience was great but food was average. But the reason I’m giving it 2 Stars is because of terrible customer service. The lady had an attitude issue and would not fully hear us if we had a question regarding one of the dishes. Before ordering the dish we asked if the dish could be made in fried rice instead of normal rice, at that time she was like yeah no worries. When the food arrived, she’s like sorry we don’t can’t customise and make it fried rice. As a courtesy I would have liked for her to tell me this before the dish is made, but when I tried asking about the dish, lady walked away. Gave us cold shoulder the entire time.
I requested her to make my dish spicy, instead it was sweeter than a sugarcane. Overall if the customer service was better I would have given it 4 Stars regardless of the food because I believe customer service is the most important thing for a restaurant.
The standard has changed here and the quality of food, roti and coconut prawns were not up to the usual standard. Friendly quick service, limited but satisfactory wine list. The menu definitely needs attention as the layout and font are not easy to read. Our fried rice and stir fried noodles were delicious, but overall not quite the experience we’ve been used to.
One of the best Thai restaurants I’ve been to. Tucked away hidden in docklands, this little restaurant is a gem. Love the fried rice, so flavoursome. The pad Thai was sensational. Tom yum soup was disappointing seeing it should be a staple in a Thai restaurant but it was just bland and and watery. Overall good experience and will come back. Oh and book in advance as you’ll be dissapointed if you walked in!
One of the better Thai restaurants in Docklands. Great for lunch or takeaway. Service is generally good and fast. Food is authentic and price is reasonable.
Today's experiment brought us to this little spot in the quiet side street of Docklands. On a Monday night there were few diners, so the place felt somewhat empty. We soon placed our orders from the big menu, both choosing the red duck curry to pair with coconut rice.
Flavourful pieces of duck were combined with a range of vegetables to provide a wholesome dish. The ample curry was delicious but also a bit watery for my liking, almost soup-like in consistency.
The well-lit, modern decor was pleasant in the quiet ambience. Service was polite but we had to remind them for our tea. As it was a quiet night and they had multiple staff, this should not have been necessary and the ratings reflected this.
We went to the restaurant seeings it’s high rating, however it was no different in food quality/ taste than any take away Thai, where you would be able to get the same in about half the price.
Servings size were really small specially the massaman curry which was more like an entree than a main.
Ambiance 3/5
Food quality 3/5
Service 3/5
Food presentation 3/5
Value for money 2/5
Nine Elephants is one of my favourite restaurants in Docklands. I’ve been a number of times and they consistently bang out great dishes. We booked in for a weekday lunch because it gets quite busy during the working week (especially Fridays!). I ordered the rice dish - Khao Ka-Praw with a mild hit of chilli, and I didn’t have to wait too long before it arrived. The dish was fragrant, the chicken and vegetables (especially the mushroom) were doused in sauce and flavour. I love how such a simple dish could be so satisfying. It’s no surprise I will be back and if you are in the Docklands area you need to try this place at least once!
The Food Book
Found this place browsing the net because we were unsure what to eat and so glad I stumbled upon this spot. Ordered the coconut prawns and drunken chicken which tasted okay which didn't have us ready for their delicious omelette rice, pad thai and red curry. Had dietary requirements with our group and staff was very understanding and accommodating. Bill also worked out to be very cheap. Thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.
Melbourne To Mouth
As far as value for money goes, this is the best Thai food in the Docklands. Stopped here after work one night and had an amazing Tom Yum soup, delicious Vegetarian Pad Thai and some great spring rolls. The soup was the perfect level of spicy, the Pad Thai was a huge portion and so tasty. Such a cute little spot and fast service. Highly recommend this for a great value for money stop after work or pre-footy meal!
Vicky Bablas
poor service. booked a table for 4 and 2 of us were served our drinks half way through the meal. The rice to go with our curry was also served half way through. No apologies were given. The roti was stale and satay sauce was watered down. The main meals were ok but wouldn't go back.
This has to be one of, if not, the best kept secrets in Melb. Docklands is so off the beaten track but well worth the visit for this fabulous restaurant. For entree the chive dumplings never disappoint and the soft shell crab is delicious. Massaman curry, duck curry and noodles are fantastic. Top this all off with great service and prices that are ridiculously low for what is provided and you have one of the best restaurants in one of the worst locations all to yourself. Best all it is only a stones throw from Southern Cross station. So do yourself a favor and add it to your list of favorites.
Mark.
Trekking Food
I love the Pad Thai, I have it with prawns which are always perfectly cooked. The flavours are mouth watering. I also like the Boat Noodles soup which is kinda like the Vietnamese pho but with Thai flavours and pork crackling, beef meatballs... Soo yummy! The Thai milk tea is nice too. It can get busy during lunch time so I recommend booking the day before.
The food here was excellent. I had a great stir fry, perfect level of spice and amount of sauce. Good ingredients used. The entrees we tried were all great too. Delivery of food was a bit haphazard and random.
Not so great service. Got told we needed to leave by 1:30 even though our booking was until 2. Also had one of the wait staff get snippy with me when I asked for my rice - my dish was one that was on both the main and rice dish listings, but I very clearly said I wanted the one with rice and also pointed. It was her error, but she gave out some pretty heavy attitude before agreeing to bring out my rice. To be honest I wouldn’t have even cared if I paid for it given they gave me a main, but she seemed more interested in arguing with me about my order than discussing how to resolve it.
If Zomato allowed half marks still, I’d be giving them a 2.5. And if the service had been better, they’d probably get a 4 as the food was really quite good. But I wouldn’t take a big group here again, I don’t think they cope well with that at all.
Alex McQuinn
Mixed experience. Tom yum soup was very bland, flavourless, not enjoyable. Mains including fried rice and massaman curry were great - very tasty.
Linda
Always reliable and tasty Thai! I ordered the pad Thai with crispy pork and extra sauce for $15. Suggest extra sauce as it can be a bit dry otherwise. Flavours are good and portions are big. Also had the roti - which was less like roti and more like toasted flat bread.
Neegita Sharma
The food here is very nice, if a vegetarian please mention it to the person serving you as thai food is ought to have shrimp/ oyster sauce(even if it mentioned as vegetarian on the menu)..also do not forget to mention the level of spice you prefer when ordering or else you would land up eating super spicy food and walk out with a running nose....I rate it 4 just because of my experience with the staff the girl serving us did not seemed trained she had no clue when asked for specifications of dishes from the menu.
Yum Thai food is ur crave of the hour? Then this is the answer. Would suggest you do a reservation before you go else you will have to wait for long. The delicious food in here is totally worth the wait in here.
Vince Gray
Food is great, but service isn't. Would not come back purely based off the service. Can never get a booking, even if I call a couple of minutes after they open. Sometimes can't even book in advance. SHOCKING service.
The food and service was amazing. Very impressed with the Pad Thai and prawn avocado salad, highly recommend! :) We will definitely visit Nine Elephants again!
Best Thai in Docklands!
Definitely the best Thai in Docklands and one of the tops in Melbourne. This place serves dishes that are rich in flavours and complexity but yet very balanced.
We were here for a work lunch and got ourselves the popular Pad Thai which was delicious. The noodles was ideal in texture - firm and smooth. We enjoyed the use of dried shrimp, which was different but surprisingly good. The dish was full of flavours - tanginess, sweetness, and sourness with a hint of smokiness.
Hannah got the Nine Elephant Thai Fried Rice which was wow! The dish was very complex in flavours with tons of different ingredients and spices making it was exciting to eat. The rice were plump and firm, not smushy or oily. It was excellent!
Service was friendly and efficient enough, though it could be a 15' wait for your food.
I've been here a few times, love the food here, probably the best Thai I've had in the city and so reasonably priced, especially for the CBD. It's a pretty small restaurant so it can get pretty busy. Service is good, definitely book before you go!
CCC
This place has really delicious food. I had the coconut prawns and pad see ewe with crispy pork and both were fantastic. Just beware the food is extremely spicy. If you get the medium, it's like hot at other restaurants and the two above that are crazy hot. Also don't like that they do credit card and even just debit card surcharges
Dash Thevarajah
Very tasty food just be careful with the level of spice you order. I ordered mild which was hot. Would definitely go again. The staff were great. Best to take cash when visiting as surcharge is added if you use any form of card.
Luke Martini
Nice place for lunch. Had the cashew pork stir fry with rice. Found it was a bit spicy for my taste, but ingredients were fresh and overall meal was well cooked. Will be back to try other dishes for sure.
Excellent Thai food at Docklands area.. little difficult to get table during lunch time.. however nice food and and hood ambiance. Serving time is decent
Good Food Good Mood
Ah Nine Elephants. When I used to work around the corner from here we would order this every single night at about 8pm whenever we were still in the office. It literally nearly turned me off Thai food because I started to associate it with not having a life. Now that I am employed elsewhere and no longer regularly charging copious amounts of take away to the Amex I can appreciate Nine Elephants for all it's deliciousness without any negative connotations. Reasonable prices, authentic flavours and an enjoyable ambiance. The Gai hom pah is sensational. Nothing turns me on like a delicious satay sauce and this housemade rendition is a killer (seriously I am obsessed and know my satay, I once stopped seeing someone because they had a severe peanut allergy and I chose to break up with them rather than my roti bread dipping sauce). The pad Thai is also a winner here with the noodles the ideal texture and the sauce both sweet and citrusy at the same time, a perfect balance and ideal use of our potent friend fish sauce which can quickly overpower this classic dish. Well worth travelling to the Windy City of Docklands for
Nomafoodic Chipineats
A very little restaurant with a highly elevated Cashier, bar counter & submerged kitchen. It feels a little confronting, like an altar. Despite that, the food is great, i remember the stir fried minced meat with basil. The stir fried crispy skin pork with kai lan is also a star. The desserts are also yummy. Good choice for food at docklands.
I had heard so many good things about this place.
I had tried booking this place two times - the first time - I received an email saying they were completely booked out.
The second time - they said they had no tables at 12.45pm and wanted me to push the booking to 1pm. I then received confirmation for 1pm.
This afternoon, my friend and I were told there was no booking. Despite the restaurant being a quarter empty, the lady at the counter refused to seat us until she had found my email in her inbox. How bizarre. We were seating at 1.15pm despite arriving there at 1pm to now a 50% empty restaurant. We were given two tables (? why? if they are so full). The waitress didn't take our order until 10 minutes later (by now the restaurant was only a quarter full). She didn't bring us the drinks menu even when asked.
We ordered the soft-shelled crab with noodles as our entree and a medium spicy red chicken curry for our main.
the soft-shelled crab had this spicy paste on only one side. The rest was quite bland and it's a small serving for $11. The alleged medium spicy red curry was sweet like dessert and had minimal pieces of chicken with an overabundance of undercooked green beans.
Grossly disappointed and the service was atrocious with the waitress never filling our bottle of water or replacing it even. Slow service. And at one time, she even made a face when we asked her a question about the dish.
Never going back despite popular opinion to be insulted like this.
Great food.
Lovely quiet environment.
Perfect for dating.
Friendly staff
Nice wine
Recommend green curry, garlic rice, Chicken mince stir fried
Just have visited once. Above average ambiance.
Little annoying was the long time.
Food quality was good.
Can try once more for good curry....!
Really delicous food, but poor services, very indifferent to asian customers and polite to western customers. next maybe only order take away, will not seated again.
SuzLovesFood
We loved our visit here tonight. The staff were great - even making helpful suggestions for our 9yo. The venue is small but nicely decorated. The menu is quite large with 4 different heat options available. We had the soft shelled crab, chicken satay, spring rolls, minced chicken fried rice, two different salads, Tom yum soup and a masaman curry. All presented well and they all tasted great. Not the cheapest Thai option in Melbourne, but definitely worth a visit (or three).
I've been here many times. It is the best thai in docklands with no doubt. It's authentic but you must book this place as it's really small and popular. Service is really good and bookings online are very prompt.
Do not take their spice levels for granted. They offer mild, spicy and thai spicy. Even my colleagues who always eat spicy cannot handle thai spicy. I'd go for mild which is still spicy for me.
I've tried everything here and what I recommend is the pad thai, the crispy pork part is a bit too hard for my liking. It's not very crispy. Also try the nine elephant spaghetti which brings a western fusion feel. Fried rice is also good. I would steer away from the tom yum soup. Although it is full of flavours they do put a lot of lemon grass on the bottom and you're left with very few ingredients to make it a filling meal.
Great place for lunch! The food both looks and tastes amazing! But just a heads up, never ever order the 'Thai Chilli' level of the chilliness unless you want to kill yourself! Its a bomb that explodes inside you! But a definite worth visit if lunching in docklands or even otherwise.
Jennifer Barnett Carr
Small, but good food. Table was wobbly, easy fix that would make the experience better. Got basil dish. Even the very mild was petty hot! Glad I listened to the advice of the server. Would come here again!
Leonie J
Great food, good service. Coconut prawns & soft shell crab for entree was yummy!
No deserts, but the coconut icecream is always good.
Quite a small restaurant and some footy crowd overflow but I definitely recommend!
Looster_Foodie
One of the best tasting Thai food in Docklands, I keep going back for more. Love the green curry paste fried rice with beef, pad thai and Nine Elephants fried rice with crispy pork belly. The Nine Elephants fried rice is just so addictive. From one belly to another (i.e. mine!)
Smart Diner
Tasty, well priced, clean, BYO and delicious. What more could you want? Taken they're a small place and you have to create the atmosphere but great for a cheap easy meal
Kell
Delicious fried rice dishes here albeit a bit steep for c.$14 a dish with a poor meat to carb ratio. Could work with toning down the oil too, however, it certainly satisfies Thai food cravings. Will come back to try the other items!
Made a booking for 1pm Friday the 17th of Feb, arrived in time and was told we need to wait for our table. Once we were seated the 4 of us, we began to look at the menu. After we tried a few times to get some one to take our order, we proceeded to order. Other guests started showing up around us at this stage, some 15 minutes since we sat. Then food started coming out ... not to us but the tables that had arrived 15 -20 after us ... Hmmmm what is going on here we asked. After getting the attention of a waitress, she said they had pre ordered. Still waiting for our food, the table to the right who sat about 1/2 after us got there food, so I asked them if they had pre ordered ... guess what, no they said, well after 45 minutes of waiting ours shows up. I ordered beef satay .... very bland, no flavours , the meat was all grizzly, another person on our table ordered the seafood tom yum, well you could count the seafood on 1 hand and there was hardly any noodles in the soup.
Not going back ... was told they are the best ... didn't see that at all.
FRESH INTERIOR, FILLING, FLAVOURFUL
So the two of us went out for a splash of Thai food on this year’s famous Feb 14th i.e. girls night out! and so we ventured to Docklands, a bit outside of the inner CBD to Nine Elephants.
We ordered the Gai Hom Pah for entree, crispy pork pad thai for noodle and cashew nut beef batter stir fry. The highlight would definitely have been the Gai Hom Pah. The combination of chicken satay wrapped with roti bread and lathered in home made peanut butter sauce was really quite something. Pro tip: DO NOT ORDER STIR FRY unless you want to feel like you ate 2 buckets of salt and msg and dying of thirst the morning after
Best pad Thai noodles I've had in awhile! Not too sweet or too hot, perfect balance. Great variety on their menu. I'll go back to get my Thai fix
Cameron Harding
Great food and great service. Best Thai food I've had in recent memory. The Basil Crispy Pork Belly was a highlight and the menu has plenty of options beyond the standard Thai fare.
Jessicaaaa
Fast service and decent Thai food. Serving sizes for some dishes can be on the small side but the quality of the food makes up for it. Can be very loud and cramped during the week when there's larger corporate groups lunching together.
Mark Quadrio
Really nice food here. If you like your food spicy, you will love this place. I don't mind a bit of kick, and a medium was still very hot. All good here we have tried is above average.
Rachel K
Great flavours with an extensive menu. We really enjoyed the duck curry and their roti is delish. Loved the chili scale on the menu to avoid surprises!! Will definitely visit again.
Don Djoe
Great food, we ordered crispy pork kra paow, beef pad thai, and papaya salad. They were all enjoyable. The pad thai was slightly bland with very few beef but still okay. The papaya salad was both sour and spicy enough to keep it tasted fresh,. Finally the kra pow was the highlight of the night. The crispy pork was cut into tiny pieces but in a good amount, stir fried into the vegie mix with the chili seasonings. Boy, it was delicious. The milk tea was great too and they provided plenty of water.
Nine Elephants was quiet on a Saturday night. It felt oddly small, probably because of the imposing front bar area. They made amazing lemon lime bitters for us. We started off with spicy calamari rings, which had a delicious seasoning and was perfectly fried. The pad thai was simply delicious, very flavoursome (with a tiny kick of chilli) and aromatic. Everything was wonderfully coated. The portion was also generous and very well priced. The boat noodles were average - the broth was fairly weak. Overall great Thai food at a great price point. Definitely go for the pad thai!
Nine Elephants is a hidden gem anyone who works in Docklands should visit!
The resturant is quite small, I recommend booking for lunch - walkins rarely get a spot, but the food is de-li-cious. Their food is full of flavour and come in generous servings. However, the food is a little on the spicy side (mild is more like medium haha) so be careful!
Would definitely recommend their Nine Elephants Fried Rice, pad thai, larb woon sen and boat noodles 👍🏻
I’ll admit it: I don’t get pad thai. But everyone seems to kick up such a fuss about the rendition here that I had no choice but to try the Chicken Pad Thai ($13). Anyway, I totally get it now. A hefty serve of rice noodles were tossed in a hot, smoky wok, along with the elusive golden ratio of palm sugar, tamarind, and fish sauce to produce that addictive combination of sweet, tangy, and umami. The noodles themselves were also fantastic; chewy and elastic, contrasting cleanly with the crisp sprouts and tender chicken. Squeeze a wedge of lemon over the top, and frankly I could eat this day and night.
After several reviews and work colleagues visiting, I finally decided to give Nine elephants a go. We (me and wife) were there for lunch today afternoon. Its a small restaurant and some tables seem to close which is understandable. I was greeted well and we started with a Tom yum soup to share - which looked & tasted good. Good amount of tangy taste, lemongrass and ginger with all veggies and chicken was a great combo to start our meal. I had the pad thai - which was a bit dry but tasted good. Mrs had the fried chicken with crispy pork belly and it was the highlight of our meal. The rice was full of flavour, basil, and pork belly was crunchy and tasty. we finished off with a coconut ice cream with 2 banana fritters (which did not taste the best) but ice-cream was good; A slightly pricey desert . Overall, would recommend this place for anyone in the area as I would def visit again. Good run for our money and good food!
Their pad thai is delicious! One of the best that I've had in a while. I also tried their red curry with beef. Their food is on the spicier side. Definitely worth a try!
Awesome Thai food in Melbourne...Not only close to my office, it is closer to my heart as well.
Fried rice is my favorite which makes me go back to this place again and again. Ambiance is wonderful and so is the friendly staff.....
Having been to this restaurant before, I knew what to expect - Small and a little bit of a squuze for tables, but friendly and good service. However we were both disappointed by the Pad Thai - it was as if it had come out of a hot box - overcooked. I had it with crisy pork, which I felt was too fatty. Sad to say it is the worst Thai meal I have had for quite some time
A real boutique and authentic Thai restaurant unit located in what seems to in a quiet street. Luckily we made reservations as the place was full and busy when we got there.
The dishes ordered were mild but spicy for our taste buds. This is no joke as colleagues who would normally enjoy a spicy meal also commented if not sweated out that it was spicy. We could see that the waiters and waitresses were having a good laugh.
Overall flavours were there even though spicy. If you can take the heat I thoroughly recommend it.
I have always admired Thai food, so I consider its a great discovery to find such an amazing Thai dining option, just in my neighbourgood!
The starters were crisp and delicious, just the way I expected them to be. I loved the fact that there were no traces of oil in them!
I had rice in the mains and the quality of food is realky good. The entire place infact boasts of a good quality, be it ambience, food or service.
I, however, have only one concern, that they serve the food too hot. Both the starters and the mains were served extremely hot, and I had to wait for a while to start with them. Trust me, it was really tough for me to stop myself because all the dishes looked gorgeous!!
FYI: it is not some random name, Nine Elephants has a meaning behind it's name.
I tried Pad Thai, som tum (papaya salad) and their signature fried rice for dinner with my wife. Good taste at reasonable price and food was served quickly. Friendly and helpful waitress made our dinning experience perfect. Will definitely come back.
To be totally honest – I had takeaway. We were working late one night at the law firm and one of the partners was generous enough to shout me and my colleagues dinner. It was recommended by someone else who often orders this when they work late at their law firm. We ordered a few dishes and shared them so let me begin:
I took the duck Gang Dang with rice (about $21) - not the best choice! Not much duck, except its skin. I had better in take away stalls for half price! And I even felt a bit sick after that lunch. Service was alright and the design of the place is fine but nothing typically Thai, just modern simple setting.
The dishes here were a little lackluster and didn't have the WOW factor I expect from the rich sweet salty spicy flavours of one of my favourite cuisines. They skimped a bit on the seafood in the stir fry and there needed to be more sauce. It wasn't horrible but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. I will give them credit were it is due though...they really do make the food spicy, the price point is quite good for big groups and the serves are quite generous in size for what you're paying. I might be a bit harsh and critical because I live 5 minutes away from the best Thai takeaway ever.
Have tried the boat noodles, pad Thai, yen tau fo, red duck curry, basil beef stir fry. As far as Thai places go I think this is probably one of the best in the cbd. If Jinda were a 5, this place is a 4. Their noodle dishes are legit.
One of my fav thai restaurant. The nine elephant fried rice is my top 1 to order. It has crispy pork in it and u can choose your level of spiciness. Its so good. 👍 Tomyum soup is very authentic to me.
Staffs are very friendly and helpful
Would definitely recommend people to dine if they look for thai food
I work in the area, go on fairly regular basis. "Authentic" spice levels to choose from. Other reviewers think it's on pricey side, I disagree. Can't compare this to quick and nasty Thai takeout. Fair value for some legit Thai food.
August 2019.
Food standard is slowly dropping. Can be quite the hit and miss now. The pad thai was horrible one day and ok the next...no consistency.
.
Dec 2018
Not sure if this has changed management but the staff are pretty rude now. Food standards are the same but they no longer allow you to adjust the spice level. They also charge a surcharge on any card payments. As an overall experience It's only ok. Such a shame.
............................................................................
Great thai restaurant. They truely understands the meaning of spicy so be careful when ordering "spicy" (been burnt many times). A tad on the pricey side for thai but the quality is well worth it.
9 Elephant spaghetti is a MUST try, it's actually one of the only things i order from there now, different and very flavoursome!
Dec 2018
Not sure if this has changed management but the staff are pretty rude now. The food is always consistant and they understand what spicy really means, be careful on the level of spice you chose! If you have not tried their spaghetti do yourself a favour and give it a shot. It is a game changer
Nine Elephants is always busy during lunch time. Good food and environment but a bit pricy. I really like the Pad Thai here, wok tossed to perfection!
FOOD TRIP
Super hard to find as there is no signage for this place. Although it was kind of in the middle of nowhere the food was surprisingly good. Quite authentic and prices were reasonable. Would recommend if you're in the area. Tom Yum (Entrée) $8.50. with Prawns (Medium Spicy). Thailand's specialty improved by Nine Elephants, Spicy and Sour Soup with Clear Broth
Excellent food. The environment is also nice. A very enjoyable night with my girlfriend. We order the green curry, soft crab and nine elephant fried noodle. The noodle is the best fried noodle I have ever had. I will try another good next time.
