Dumplings here are the best in MELBOURNE... Served on a long plate of 12 is the best entree before you tuck into a main meal.. I had an amazing 'spiced beef soup' which was a hit when your in the middle of a Melbourne winter... A must when your in the Melbourne CDB.. A personal fav.
My score 3.5 stars (avge of 2 visits). J picked up takeaway dinner from here on Sat 30th May. Spring onion pancake ($5.20) – Was ok, but not heaps of spring onion (a common thing at many places). Kung Pao tofu ($17.80) – Spicy, nice tofu, lots of peanuts. Eggplant in Spicy garlic sauce ($17.80) – Heaps of soft yummy eggplant, spicy but quite vinegary (marks off). Overall quite oily (marks off). Got a bit stodgy by the end but would have been ok if sharing with a larger group of people.
Aug 2019. Staff absolutely lovely. Place really quiet (music low), good acoustics, comfy, clean. J got Spinach noodle soup with vegetables ($11.80) - Piping hot. Broccoli, carrot, sesame seeds, snow peas, Chinese broccoli and spring onions all good. Zucchini was a bit watery. Nice stock (maybe a little mild). Spinach noodles had a nice bite to them. She spruced it up with some chilli oil and vinegar – making it into a very tasty hot and sour noodle soup.
Comfortable atmosphere and the fried rice is excellent
Nice casual restaurant..Loved their peking duck and other sichuan varieties
Service 9/10
food 10/10
price 8/10
The reason I rate 5 stars - Staff friendly. As well as the food quality excellent
Dumplings Plus CBD "more seats upstairs" sign max $$$
2019-Aug-25-pm-07-38-08
Hi Dumplings Plus - Swanston st, Melbourne CBD, Australia,
Love ur dumplings.
Please feedback to management to max ur $$$ if u could install a laminated A4 sign that costs less than a few dollars on ur restaurant front window on eye level next to entrance to communicate that u have more seatings upstairs.
The reason is that passing customers from outside will think that ur restaurant is full and no place for them to sit based on the packed seatings at the ground level. People don’t like to queue and wait so they leave. Customers don’t know there are more seatings upstairs.
Thus with a sign, customers know there’s more seats upstairs and will come in and buy food from u thus max ur $$$
Please feedback to management.
Best regards,
Jianfa Tsai (Ben)
We visited dumplings plus for a quick dinner on a Saturday night and as usual, it did not disappoint. Beautiful fresh dumplings prepared through a window in the dining room. A great selection of dishes on the menu, we opted for the roast crispy duck served with a sweet sauce. Everything was delicious and so well priced.
Came here for a late night snack and the place was still bustling. The wontons in Sichuan chilli oil were the perfect remedy for my dumpling craving. Great flavour and not too heavy!
Food was great and very tasty. We were greeted by two ladies who were very helpful and guided us how/what to order. Explained what the customers might expect to taste on a food. (i.e: This is ... it has like this ... etc) Would recommend this to everyone.
Having recently tried chicken and prawn wantons in a chilli oil elsewhere I was keen to repeat that winning combination when a friend suggested a quick post drink dinner at Dumplings Plus. I was hesitant in coming here as had had a bad experience at a suburban namesake but I need not have been as the wontons were cooked well and were delicious. Easily the best of the Dumplings Plus I have tried... perhaps due to the huge turnover.
We ordered via Menulog at first time a few days ago.
Everything was so nice black bean beef rice, rice noodle with beef?pork? And green bean with pork and rice, xianlong bao, even prawn crackers came for free
Delivered foods were impressive, so we decided to go back and have a proper meal in the store.
My boyfriend decided to have one more green bean pork with rice dish, barramundi, we shared mixed dumplings, xianlong bao, and I had pork with sweet chili sauce.
The first impression of actual restaurant was quite disappointing from the beginning.
I got a small bowl to use for myself and somehow I wanted touch inside of bowl today.
OMG, I was able to feel unclean dried rice from the bowl. ALL OVER INSIDE of the bowl. I asked server to change it, next one was fine. And dumplings were served, xianlong bao was awesome. My boyfriend loved green bean dish as first time, I liked my dish as well, and when I got the barramundi.. it was such a huge disappointment.
When We got the actual dish, I touched plate to put in the middle, under the plate, I was able to feel the same feeling that I had from unwashed bowl.
Apparently their kitchen hand doesn't know how to wash the dishes.. but that is NOT the main disappointment.
The barramundi was SO FISHY.
I must tell you I am a Korean, i love to eat fish dishes, I love fish dish smells as well as long as it's fresh seafood.
I had a few of outside of skin, it's bearable, as soon as we picked inside of skin, I was almost going to throw up.
We had to leave the dish barely touched.
Wasting precious 28 dollars......
Mixed dumplings were okay. My boyfriend liked it, I was just okay.
Also just letting you know guys if you order through menulog, no surcharge for credit card, but actual restaurant charges 2.5% surcharge.
I definitely ordered more than I needed... So worth it though.
I visited on 29.03.19 and ordered an iced lychee drink, 2 bbq pork buns and 12 fried pork dumplings.
The lychee drink was not overly sweet but not sour. I'm not sure what type of liquid they used but it was tasty.
The bbq buns were huge (unless I've always had small ones) but nonetheless they weren't super sweet (which I hate in a pork bun) and had real pieces of bbq pork inside instead of just mush.
The dumplings I could have eaten all day. Juicy, delicious little meat pockets.
A cheap meal with a lot of food for one person. I left being happy and full of dumplings.
Will be back.
I came here a looooong time ago, shortly after it opened and I remembered having such a good time with good food and tasty dumplings and everything else. Came back here not long ago, and I was slightly disappointed, I think. Don't get me wrong, the dumplings were good, but I wasn't as wowed as I was on my first visit. what surprised me, though, was their braised chicken noodle soup. I was expecting some bland soup (ala wonton noodle soup) but the broth in this dish was soooooo good. Would come back here for the soup instead of the dumplings.
One random eating place along Swanston street, that turned out to be delicious! I think everything we ordered was good that day 🏅🏅🏅 shout out to their salt and pepper fish and stir fry long beans!
Me being annoying, the dumpling skin is a bit too thick and their chili has not much taste. But hey 5⭐ rating still!!
This was a spot for dinner prior a movie. Pleasant place though the seating was too compact for comfort. Very friendly staff who were very attentive to all the customers present.
We got ourselves the pork dumplings in chilli sauce,a stir fry pork rice and the chicken & prawn dumplings. The first two were such a succulent treat with a very well flavored rice covered in pork slices and a yummy bowl of dumplings in chilli sauce/oil. The dumplings were abit of a disappointment with the dumpling being too thick and not a blanket covering the goodness inside.
I'd definitely give this place another go as the vibe here was quite satisfying forgetting the dumplings.
I had the vegetables and fried tofu mix. It was yummy. Also had the pan fried vegetable dumplings. They were delicious. Will return again 😋
Dropped in to Dumplings Plus for a quite meal before an evening event. The place was busy but everyone seemed to be served quickly.
My companion and I shared the vegetarian spring rolls and the steamed pork dumplings.
The food was fresh and tasty.
The ambience was very casual and clean.
Food 4*
Service 4*
Ambience 3*
The cost of the meal was very reasonable and I'll definitely be back again.
This is one of those rare places where the food that is served looks just like the picture in the menu. The food was really good too and the service was fast.
We love the food here ! The pork bun is amazing. My boyfriend loves the spring onion pancake. I love the fried rice. Thanks for opening until late let us find out that there is such a great restaurant in city. Totally worth to drive to city to have it! Will be back soon.
Located in CBD,, and also there are other outlets across the city. A very nice place for a good food.. fresh food and fast service .. friendly and always smiling staff..
It might be crowded sometimes so there will be waiting for the seating .. but it worth waiting for the amazing food .. I am sure no one would be disappointed .
Tried couple of things and all turned out to be good ..
Couldn’t take the pics as I couldn’t wait to eat the food as soon as it was served on the table .😁
Tried , steamed and pan fried dumplings both vegetarian and chicken .. and the star dish was the “Sichuan deep fried chicken with dry chillies and peanuts “.. this is was amazing .. must try.
Busy Saturday night. Got a table upstairs, no wait. We have eaten here several times and it never disappoints. We had dumplings, pork belly rice, a noodle dish and 1/2 duck.
All dishes were super yummy and enjoyed. Well priced drinks and excellent service compliments the meal. We will return....again!

We tried the dumplings here the other days. It was really good. They provide soy sauce, vinegar and chilli which go really well with our pork and prawn dumplings.
The staff was quite friendly.
Pork and Chives pan-fried dumplings!!
That's my thing here otherwise food is good but can be better.
Service is fast and the staff is very polite.
Very reasonable dumplings! Everyone was happy. Would go back just for the dumplings . Fed four of us for $40. Was clean and service was reasonable
Dumplings Plus on Swanston Street in the CBD was nothing short of a pleasant surprise. Whilst it doesn't have the lines of Shanghai Dumpling, or the wait of Hutong Dumpling House, it is by no means inferior. What set this place apart? The quality of their dumplings. Both the incredibly plump pork and prawn dumplings, and the pork xiao long bao, came out steaming hot, and had the taste and texture of freshly home-made dumplings.
The best of their outlets is the one in the CBD on Swanston. Their chilli oil dumplings are my go to dish here. Well priced, quick service, reasonably attentive staff (by Chinatown standards). This is definitely in my top 3 dumpling places in Melbourne's CBD.
Asian restaurants abound along Swanston Street and we were lucky to chance upon Dumplings Plus. Compared to others that we have tried, this one is definitely on the plus side when it comes to serving time, taste, ambiance and price. We ordered Chicken and Corn Soup, Special Fried Rice with Shrimp and BBQ Pork, Sichuan Style Fried Rice, Special Marinated Chicken and the Pan Fried Handmade dumplings (10 pcs). For a group of 3 hungry adults and 1 child the servings were more than enough. The taste of every dish was excellent. I would have given it a rating of 5 if not for one lady server who didn't seem to be pleased when we asked for additional plates (because 1 small bowl for each diner is not enough specially when you also ordered soup).
nice big delicious dumplings. price was reasonable and the staff very friendly. we dined downstairs and cpuld watch the chefs prepare the food.
Terrific place for low cost, excellent food with quick, attentive service.
We go there often and it’s always been a great experience. The food is always delicious. The staff are attentive and welcoming. It’s also reasonably priced.
Highly recommend this place!
We went there around 10 in the night when mostly all restaurants were closed. Being open till late is Def one of the best part. Food comes in big portions so if u r a small eater then u shud think about sharing. The food is yum and the noodles and starters are all up to the mark.
Definition of cheap n cheerful! The renovation took it from slightly dingy to comfy and bright. Service was prompt from being seated to when the food came out. Pan fried pork n chives dumplings were the fave, Xiao Loong baos not bad either. Enjoyed the Special fried rice and Green Beans with minced pork dish. Mongolian beef had a few too many onions for my liking for all in all for $30 a head including alcohol, was a good pre gig dinner!
I went in to try some good dumplings. To my loss, I am not a legit non vegetarian and only prefer chicken in the non veg options. Therefore, this place had limited options for me. However, they do offer to customize dishes for you which is a treat. I ordered steam chicken dumplings. One would say that they were worth the $10. However, I have had better. I am at a loss coz I cannot comment on most of the delicacies this place offers, therefore Consodering the popularity this place has, I would like to give it a benefit of doubt.
Earlier in the year Dumplings Plus on Swanston Street received a makeover, which resulted in a bright and clean new restaurant with a beautiful store-front display for their take-away items. It was this take-away display that lured me in to Dumplings Plus after a long night out.
Visited this place for a dinner with relatives during my short stay in Melbourne . Restaurant look little congested but they have sitting space on level 1 too. We ordered veg dumplings with great expectations but they turned out to be average. In mains we ordered stir fried chicken with peanuts and stir fried vegetable along with fried rice. Chicken was good with smoky flavour and Rice was average. I liked thr lime bitter drink. Overall it was good experience with different food and change from our daily routine.
A good go to dumpling joint in the CBD where you are nearly always going to be able to score a seat. The quality can be a little hit and miss, never had a bad meal just find some nights are a little better than others.
Great place to get your dumpling fix. Highly recommend the dumplings in chilli
The pork dumplings in chilli oil are addictive as hell. I have been to dumplings plus at least 20 times. My love started at highpoint where I realised this is the benchmark for dumplings. The rest of the food is really average though.
When I am ever craving dumplings I choose this joint as my number one spot.
The food is really good. My favourite dish is sautéed shredded pork with spicy garlic sauce on rice. It tastes similar with what I had eaten in China. If you like sweet and spicy, must try it.
This restaurant was very accommodating for our large group, happily taking the booking and setting up enough room for us. The food was great, really great chicken and prawn dumplings! Points off because we had to go find the waiter so we could order, but other than the customer service a really good dumpling experience :)
The dumpling restaurant we always default to when the rest are full for lunch. Don't be deceived if it looks busy from outside, they've got 3 levels of seating.
We came here exclusively for dumplings and ordered up an array of them.
I'd just like to start off by saying the dumplings here are really plump which makes up for the prices per serving. The XLB was super disappointing, I'm usually the one that would roll my eyes when someone breaks the skin but these were really fragile when stuck to another XLB or even the sheets. I didn't just break one, I broke two! Sad days.
We also got dumplings and wontons in chilli sauce, always a winner regardless how inconsistent the two sauces were, one was sweeter and the other spicier. Fried dumplings had great substance in both quality filling and quantity.
The second floor of the building doesn't have a great atmosphere (it's also where the toilets are), I suggest getting a table on the third where they have a more open space better for catering larger groups.
Dumplings plus is the best choice for dumplings within the CBD. The dumplings are always fresh, the restaurant is always clean and the staff are helpful.
Quality food and service! Best Dumpling in Melbourn love coming here with family and friends! Came here few week ago and wanna come back many time more!! Highly recommend dumplings plus
Food was delicious, and at such a good price! Service was quite good, and by God, have you tried the Iced Lychee??! It's delicious!!
We went with the sechuan fish, which could happily feed four people. The fish was so soft and flavourful, literally melts in your mouth!
My favorite place to get dumplings in Melbourne. It's not on the cheap side and it's not fancy expensive. It hits that sweet spot of good value and nice food.
I really recommend the chili chicken, which is so tasty. And service is so considerate. But I think the cabbage has no taste, not sour. not salty. And the soup is just so so.
This place is actually quite good. Lots of food varieties and most of them are quite good, such as chilli oil wanton, seasame balls, steam dumpling etc! Much better than any other similar resteraunt
We've been to every dumplings plus restaurant in the city and they are consistently good across the board! My dining companion loves their kung pao chicken and I'm allll about the dumplings. They pass the high bar of 'The repeat visit'
The dumplings were big and juicy. I enjoyed both prawn and pork combinations and I was full after eating only 5! The filling was nice and soft. I do like the overall upgrade to the restaurant but the service was 50/50. One the staff barely gave eye contact and only used body language to respond to us. Another staff member was super friendly. The main negative is that it can get quite chilly on the lower floor because the entrance is always open.
UPDATE 16/05/2017
Renovated interior and better food.
Too close for comfort ..... just the way I like it.
Be ready to get acquainted with your fellow diners at the next table as the dining area is small in comparison to the many tables and chairs inside. It is especially designed for a quick meal, quick turn-around for maximum number of patrons, so don't go here if you are looking for a longer relaxing meal time. Also make sure you watch your tongue; topic of conversation and volume as your next table might not like what they are hearing too :-) it is a loud kinda place.
The great thing of being close to each other is if you are not sure what to order, look around (especially the Asian looking ones) and just order what they order, 9/10 it will be good.
Young diners, make sure that you are not substance affected; slurring, yelling at floor staff and showing your body parts is never an acceptable practice anywhere, even close to midnight, an embarrassment to yourself and family.
Food wise, too easy to order and enjoy, good value for money.
Very Chinese style. Dumplings taste delicious and service nice. Drinks are cheap but not so good. An ideal place to come with couple of friends.
One of my favorite places to eat dumplings in the city & it's all so cheap! On this particular occasion we ordered hot & sour soup, fried rice, pork dumplings in chili sauce & pan fried pork chives dumplings. Everything was fab & the service very quick for a public holiday. Paid less than $40 for 3 so quite happy with the meal!
One of the many cheapish dumpling type shops in the CBD but I rate it pretty highly.
I go here a lot for luncheo dumplings in chilli oil is 10/10.
Service is good. The house Chinese beer tastes like ass and gutter water but it’s cheap so I will keep drinking it. It may also give you hepatitis B C and R so get your shots before going.
Took my mum here she was impressed.
9.666/10 Boiled Potatoes Advice: Great go today for lunch.
Food Is Really Great
+4.5
Dumplings seem to be sold everywhere in Melbourne cbd (and I as a Sydneysider am admittedly jealous)!!
I went to Dumplings Plus twice. The first time, my family collectively ordered:
- Chicken and prawn pan fried dumplings
- Pork pan fried dumplings
(both dumpling sets were quite oily, but crispy and overall great value)
- Special fried rice (standard but tasty)
- my sister also got iced lemon tea which she said was the best she's ever tried.
The second time I ordered takeaway boiled pork dumplings (15 pieces) 💖💖 suchhh good value (only $9.80!!!) and a quick wait (10mins) considering that the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night.
This place was hands down the bomb diggity. So yum and such good value. Now we are ones that love our gyozas and Japanese inspired food but this was delicious. Boyfriend had 15 chilli pork dumplings while I ordered the 10 pan fried pork dumplings and they were amazingly tastebud tantalising!!...
Really nice place, the dumpling were so good I forgot to take a photo. They also have delicious Pekin duck that you must try if you are there. You definitely go back!
Cold Noodle nice, flavourful and goes very well with the roast duck.
Roast duck isn’t the best quality in terms of flavour or the way it’s roasted but, it’s tender, fatty and moist. ( some roast duck is just dry and tough)
Overall, value for money place, quality is reasonably good !
Service is quick and efficient. Not the best place large groups greater than 5. Simple and straight forward dishes to fill the hungry tummy.
This place will always be my go to place for Chinese takeout. Tried the pork dumplings in chili oil today and it was delicious. Huge portions priced reasonably.
