A big group gathering of 8 people for a dumpling feast at Din Tai Fung. Overall service was okay, food was good. Felt that some items were a bit expensive. I think its good to visit if in a big group, otherwise if only 2 people maybe a bit pricy.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Din Tai Fung finally opened its doors in Melbourne in 2015 after they opened various franchise stores in Sydney. Din Tai Fung is situated on the 4th floor of Emporium Shopping Centre right smack back in the CBD. Conveniently to get to, and many ways to access from Little Bourke Street, and Lonsdale Street entrances. The restaurant is actually quite big but from the front counter entry point it does look very tight and small. Its only when you walk in further to the back then it is more spacious. I always request to be seated in the back dining area for this reason. As being seated at the front area there’s just too many people.
🔆SERVICE🔆
I wouldn’t say the service is that great. The staff don’t seem to have much manners or appropriate customer service skills. Training definitely is required. Even though we are a big group of 8 people, still need to be friendly and courteous but she was abrupt and a little rude.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
We ordered the following to share, and we pretty much polished it all up.
Pork Xiao Long Bao (8), $14.90
Vegetarian dumplings (6), $10.90
Vegetarian Egg Fried Rice with mushrooms and truffle oil $13.90
1 x Pork Steam bun $3.00

2 x Truffle Dumpling, 4.90 each

🔆VERDICT🔆
We definitely ordered quite alot of food to eat, but it was a great opportunity to try different dishes. I think the most memorable was the pan fried pork dumplings, they were cooked very well with nice crispy base and juicy flavoursome meat filling.
The pork xiao long bao was also quite good. Surprisingly the vegetarian egg fried rice with mushrooms and truffle oil was very tasty and we all loved it so much we ordered another serve as 1 wasnt enough between 8 people.
The green beans with mince pork was tasty, but the beans were way over cooked and shriveled up.
The restaurant is located in the Emporium and occupies half of its fourth floor. It is comparable to other Chinese restaurants in terms of quality, quantity, staff hospitality and location.
The food is authentic and tastes like Taiwan and southern China cuisine, and it also includes some popular foods in eastern china, for example steamed buns, which are of a desirable standard. The environment is excellent, with a number of sofa seats and window seats. However, this restaurant is highly popular during mealtimes, and in weekends waiting is required. Overall this is a fabulous restaurant.
Coming from Malaysia, Din Tai Fung is one of the premium restaurants we have and serves pretty decent quality food Hence, I decided to try the Melbourne’s branch.
Ordered:
Shanghai Style Drunken Chicken $10.9 🐓
Fried Pork Chop Noodle with Spicy Sauce $17.9 🍜
Sweet & Sour Pineapple Pork $18.9
Egg Fried Rice with Shredded Beef $13.9 🍛
Crumbed Chicken Fillet $10.9 🍗
Pork Dumpling (Xiao Long Bao) $14.9 🥟
I liked everything we ordered except for the xiao long bao as I've tasted better at Shanghai Street. Other than that, everything else was good especially the sweet & sour pineapple pork and the Crumbed Chicken Fillet.
