Review Nomada Food & Wine - Melbourne

Jason
Ordered the set menu dinner. 7 courses. Oyster with the granita was amazing. The rest was nice. Forgot to take a pic of the last two courses which was a salad and beef short rib. Slightly loud place but most places like these terms to be like that.

I had a booking last night for 13 to celebrate my University graduation. We had the pleasure of having Michael cater for our table. He was incredibly helpful, friendly and accomodating. The food is always fantastic and made for a great evening out. Highly recommend! ☺️

Absolutely exceptional experience. We have Spanish every year for our anniversary, this year we decided to try Nomada and we were not disappointed. The food was exceptional and the service was fantastic. The wines were also on point with a great variety. We'll definitely come back here and will be recommending Nomada to others.

Loved this place. We have been to Barcelona back in 2018 and loved the Spanish food there. The food here was so good it reminded me and my wife of our trip to Barcelona. Personal favourite was the parfait cigar and Iberico Jamon. But every dish had its own delicious-ness. Looking forward to next season so we can visit again.

An impressive restaurant on many levels. I’ll start in an unusual way by recommending an earlier review of this place by {One Piece Left}. I have read their review and it says many of the things that I would wish to have said. My night here was a reunion of sorts with old school friends. They weren’t allowing me much licence to properly review Nomada, unfortunately. All I can report is general impressions and thankfully they’re good ones. I liked the restaurant on multiple levels. It’s an attractive place to dine. It’s cute and well set out. We sat at a table at the front and had a great night. One of our party suggested the restaurant feed us instead of trying to get the group to settle an order. This was a wise call and thereafter we were presented with a succession of very nice dishes, most of which I was unable to identify or closely examine properly for fear of being ribbed mercilessly by my companions. My favourite was what I will call the croquettes. They were superb. We had a great night here. The decor, food and service were all excellent. It is a very good restaurant and it is highly recommended.

Refined Spanish cuisine served in a cosy and unfussy ambience. Sophisticated cooking is coupled with skilled execution as seen in the leek croquette, or the divine chocolate ganache. Friendly and attentive customer service where our water glasses were never empty and we received good advice on the menu.

Amazing food and service. Excellent value. Loved the setting and great for a group catch up. Caters well to people with different dietary requirements.

Off to the Spanish quarter for dinner @NormadaFoodandWine Black Olive Sponge, Salt Cod, Yarra Valley Salmon Roe - The sponge is interesting, it looks sweet but is savoury, a subtle yet distinctive black olive flavour, complimented by the cream and salty seafood flavour of the cod and caviar which bursts in your mouth. Leek & Manchego (right) - I love croquettes, deep fried golden crunchy crumb encasing soft bechamel and creamy leek, what's not to love? Iberico Jamon (left) - even better, love the salt sprinkles for added flavour, love the Jamon and cheesy Mancheho flavour. Heirloom Tomato, Feta, Basil Oil, Sorrel - after the croquettes this very refreshing salad is a must. Beautifully presented, the lovely variety of heirloom tomatoes and soft feta which isn't salty melts in your mouth. Mushroom Stuffed Piquillo Pepper, Romesco - lovely tender earthy mushrooms, soft pepper complimented by the sweet romesco sauce, lovely creation Cured Kingsfish, Avocado, Spring Onion, Cherry - with a soy dressing. It's an usual combination but it works. The kingdfish is light but the soy adds just enough saltiness, creamy avocado contrasts against the spring onion, and the cherry is muted adding a touch of sweetness and acidity. Yum, clever creation. (Cheese) Urgelia - Semi-Firm, Washed Rind, Cow Catalonia Spain - Still a bit hungry so went with some cheese as a balance between savoury and sweet. The cheese has a very strong flavour, I like it. With the very thinly sliced sourdough that is toasted, a touch of quince paste for a touch of sweetness, it helps offset the hardness and is an enjoyable prelude to dessert. Chocolate Ganache, Olive Oil, Crisp Bread, Sea Salt - looks very simplistic, but when the ganache is so so good and chocolatey, it speaks for itself. What a way to finish! What a lovely venue, excellent friendly service, delicious and creative food, excellent night out! #Spanishfood #blackolive #sponge #cod #caviar #croquette #manchego #ubericojamon #mushroom #romesco #kingfish #cheese #chocolateganache #dessert #sweettooth #foodcoma #foodie @zomatoaus

We just had dinner here and absolutely loved everything about the place! The food was delicious and the waiter was able to recommend the perfect amount to order. The staff were extremely friendly and also ensured all our dietary requirements were accommodated for! This place was recommended to us by friends and we will definitely be recommending it to all our friends! We will be back!!

We had a fantastic evening. Michael was the greatest host. His recommendations and passion for their food was contagious. The lamb skewers are to die for. Highly recommend for a food/wine excursion into Espanol.

What a great find ! The clacked egg amazing flavours, the smaller dishes all delicious. Steak and truffle divine. Wine list great too. Congratulations of a great place your food and staff fantastic.

From the moment we walked in it was amazing- you will never be able to settle for an egg again unless it is clacked (yes that word again is clacked - the house speciality) Even a perfect wine and cheese match to end the night with the owner You won't find better this side of Barcelona (Mo Vida included). Do yourself a favour

Great customer service and great atmosphere (esp for dinner): we always feel so welcome when we come here. Food isn’t cheap but it is excellent and kitchen is really good with my (complex) allergies. Would highly recommend for a nice dinner out!

Amazing food . I have a curly hair salon round the corner and have been telling our guests about this place !

We had the most wonderful lunch here. The service was INCREDIBLE and the food was brilliant. The space is gorgeous as well. The daily special of teeny tiny rabbit pies were so delicious. Cracking wine list and great to see our favourite sherry available by the glass as well. Thank you for a fabulous hospitality experience that ticked every single box for us.

Absolute top drawer!! The food was fantastic, and really nice to explore with smaller plates and bigger flavours, with the standout being the chorizo and the cerviche, washed down with great coffee and a superb Bloody Mary!! We were very well looked after by Lucy, who was very knowledgable and made some perfect recommendations. Can't wait to head back soon.
Shane Croaker
The food here is next level, service is also spectacular..... thanks for a great evening Michael and staff.

I can’t speak highly enough of this venue! Amazing service, atmosphere, food and drinks menu! We were so well looked after and can’t wait to go back!

Looked so lovely when we walked in, good service, great decor but let down by the coffee. Hoping to try the food soon as the menu looked promising.

My Fiancé and I had the Chefs Menu Tapas and it was amazing! The staff are extremely friendly and genuinely seem to have a passion for what they do. Highly recommended, would return in a flash. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Simply perfect. The flavour and personality of this place is best in class. Flavours and techniques that are bound to win chef hats and service that makes you remember why you enjoy going out.

Amazing flavours, great wine and service.
Hello. Imnikki
I remembered reading reviews by two esteemed foodies about Nomada and thus when a friend requested for Spanish cuisine for her birthday, I decided that it must be a sign telling me to go now! All I can say after my meal was wow!

We opted for the Chefs Menu and started off with sourdough and a most amazing dip. I honestly can't remember what it was (garlic and olive oil perhaps?) but it was incredibly flavourful. We moved on to the oysters, which I was told was superb, the leek and manchego croquettes and smoked eel and mussel montaldito. The latter two blew my socks off. Beautiful depth of flavours from the ingredients pairing, and so moreish.

These were followed by the slow cooked cuttle fish with potato puree, chorizo and green peas, and the braised beef cheeks with cauliflower puree. Again, both impressive! The chefs here are not afraid to play with flavours and textures, and our taste buds were in for a ride. The former had hints of spiciness from the chorizo, which was balanced out by the mellow taste of the cuttlefish and earthy flavours of the potato puree. Similarly the mild nuttiness of the creamy cauliflower puree helped toned down the heavy meaty flavours of the beef cheek.

We ended our meal with churros dipped in chocolate sauce. I couldn't fault these crispy yet soft churros. Would it surprise you for me to say that I ate more than my share?

The cocktails here were just as excellent as the food, and the service was outstanding. The fellow who looked after us was genuinely friendly, charming and extremely witty. You really couldn't ask for more here.
This is my favorite new find in ages and I've been twice in as many months, which is rare for me.

For a start, the venue is warm and inviting and the service is friendly without being overbearing. We had the pleasure of being served by the owner Good Friday eve, and though he was the only man out front, we really couldn't complain. He wa happy to delay our order til the rest of the party got there and was great in recommending dishes and providing extra bread.

Most importantly, the food was OUTSTANDING. I've tried pretty much all of the dishes now and found most pretty tasty, but the smoked eel and the Catalan rice dish was to die for. I was really impressed with how well cooked all the seafood was. The other standout was the beef tendon and the pipi ceviche, which is pricey but totally worth it, so I was a bit sad it wasn't available at our second visit.

If you're thinking about it... just go. For once, i'm in 100% agreement with all the glowing reviews!!! Oh and the dip for the bread...YUM! JUST GO!

Our Saturday night was one of those times where you find yourselves placing your destiny into the good hands of the restaurant. A few simple questions on what we felt like in the wine department resulted in the offering of a fun and light red; a 1.5L bottle for the four of us (with the cost declared... big tick), enabling us to focus on the food. We could have ordered everything on the menu; it’s that kind of place where everything appeals. The food was flawless; aside from the most amazingly-moreish romesco sauce for dipping our bread into, the other stand-outs were the leek and manchego cheese croquetas ($5 apiece), the Cape Grim steak tartare with black garlic and puffed beef tendon ($14.50… we ordered two) and the simplicity of the fried padron peppers with salt & sherry vinegar ($12.00). Another red selected for us (this time, a deeper, richer malbec) complimented our night of fantastic company and food in a very comfortable venue and impeccable service. I can't wait to go back.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
Where did Hamer and Tong go? Well, it’s now a cool Spanish wine bar. It’s quiet venue to hang for afternoon drinks and dinner - we had a great experience here and tried most of the nibbles from the oysters to the steak tartare!
Amanda
The egg and the brussel sprouts were delicious. The portions were as expected for tapas. We ordered a main, a side, 3 tapas, and 2 desserts, which was enough for three hungry girls. Great relaxed vibe for a saturday night. It was full house but not too noisy. Great place for drinks and chats. The owner took orders and served food, whilst providing a few jokes along the way.
FoodN
Food here was tasty but nothing that would make me go back. Portion sizes were very small. Beef cheeks were nice but there wasn’t enough sauce. I also enjoyed the brussel sprouts. Calamari and churros were pretty bland.

We absolutely loved our recent lunch at Nomada!
As one of the few really good, affordable Spanish restaurants in Melbourne (in my opinion) Nomada is a real foodie find just off of Brunswick street.

We chose a handful of smaller dishes to share, as well as two larger ones.
Highlights included the bowl of pipis (packed full of flavour and fun to eat), calamari/chorizo dish and the salmon. However, there wasn’t one dish that we didn’t deem delicious. The restaurant itself, is fun and vibrant while still retaining an intimate atmosphere.
Overall, an outstanding meal! I cannot wait to come back here and eat my way through more of the menu...

Anada used to be our favourite place but we have a new favourite since our visit to Nomada. The food is just as good and the service is better. The chefs menu was amazing value for $55. You get the tapas equivalent of three courses. And bless you Nomada for giving my dairy-allergic husband a dessert that was not sorbet, at short notice. (It was a churro with some kind of absolutely delicious fragrant sugar syrup to dip it in. It was almost better than the chocolate sauce I got. Almost.) As I said, service was great. They were very happy to discuss the wine and give us various tastes to help us decide, even though we were buying by the glass, not the bottle. Food was awesome. The calamari dish was over the top on salt but I couldn't fault the rest of the meal. Get down there pronto before it gets impossible to get a table.

-=== REAL SCORE 4.5/5 ===-

The saying goes… it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. We forgot how we came across Nomada, but by the time we walked out the door, we realised that we have had one of the best Spanish meals ever! Nomada has a strong team of the Melbourne culinary world backing them, think Kettle Black, Bomba and Anada. Luckily I wasn’t equipped with this knowledge prior to writing this review, because it allowed me to enjoy the food as it is, and not to form any comparisons with the other restaurants.
Debby
This small restaurant in Brunswick is perfect for romantic dinner or intimate catch up with closed ones. There is a great selection of alcohols to accompany your choice of small and big tapas dishes. Most of the dishes are cooked and executed perfectly.

Absolutely loved our impromptu dinner here at Nomada last week.

Extensive selection of drinks (both Spanish, Australian etc).

Went for the Chef's Menu which was an absolute steal at $55.
Started off with the leek & manchego cheese croquettes, oysters with almond milk, and delightful clacked eggs with creamed leek, spanner crabs and caviar. The clacked eggs were exquisite.

Next, milk braised spring lamb with eggplant and labneh (how amazing is this combination??)
Coal grilled calamari+ potato puree +chorizo+ green peas (we are still reminiscing this dish!)
grilled sweet potato, eggplant, goats cheese and seeds - beautiful

Was too full for the churros afterwards!

Service was exceptional. Superbly attentive and quirky at the end.
Our drinks were accidentally left off the bill, and when pointed it out, it was just put on the house!

Will definitely be going back here, and highly recommend. 5 Stars and more.

Went for Emergency procrastination Dinner with the bestie last night and discovered this amazing gem of a restaurant just off Brunswick St in Fitzroy.

Just ‘cause it’s life-dishing mood we opted for the Chef’s Menu which was absolutely fantastic, starting with oysters, spanner crab y eggs, manchego croquettes for entrees, then a delicious milk-cooked lamb with eggplant and labneh, calamari on potato puree, and topped with delicious churros.

Everyone were hilarious and lovely, and the banter was definitely top drawer! 5⭐️!

Kind of disappointing.

Food was great and service was well meaning but took an hour and a half to get to our main course (6:30-8:00), only after asking where it was. I was cut off before I could explain that we needed to leave soon for a movie but wasn't given a chance and was told food was on the way. Had different waiters the entire time which made it harder then it needed to be. Both waiters tried to be pleasant but in execution came off a little over-bearing. Food was good, but not great. Nice atmosphere.

I went to Nomada for my partner's mother's birthday dinner last Sunday and our party of seven loved the experience! The oysters with bursting, zesty finger limes were my favourite dish and the intimate, bright and airy atmosphere was the perfect setting to devour fresh seafood within. Relaxing holiday vibes... so nice!
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Hearts were broken when Hammer & Tong announced it was closing its doors. Their soft shell crab buns would be no more. In its place, Nomada would spring up, coming from the experienced hospitality supergroup of Jesse Gerner (Bomba, Anada, Park Street Dining), Jesse McTavish (The Kettle Black), Michael Burr (Bomba, Chin Chin), Greg McFarland (The Kettle Black) and Shane Barrett (Samuel Pepys). Modern tapas for lunch and dinner? Yes please.
Ybibit
Service pleasant. Coffee decent. Clacked egg, tomatoes, tasty. However, everything else we tried (larger dishes, croquetas, churros) was sub-par as the balance & seasoning was not there. We left our churros uneaten as they were frankly underwhelming - we never do this, but they were Not. Good. We do know what churros (and accompanying chocolate) should be like as we have spent some time in Spain. We should have said something to the staff, but didn't speak up - I haven't graduated to sending back brunch plates yet (as an aside, it took me years to be prepared to send back bad coffee).

IMO, this place needs a new chef and to up its food game. Otherwise, it'll soon find itself a casualty of the Melbourne Cafe Wars. How fullI have no desire to return here anytime soon because of the food - not when there are so many other cafes to pick from. I expected better from the pedigree.

Of course, it could just be us having a bad experience!
TheBearReview
Whilst I am rather sad Hammer & Tong no longer exist. Nomads Cafe y Tapas is no disappointment.
The service was friendly, can do and towards the end of the night after a couple too many, accomodating.
I honestly cannot clearly remember the food other than we all cleared our plates and ordered a second serving of something because it was that good.
For those reasons I will be returning and you should check it out!

It's a sleepy Sunday morning and Melbourne is dressed in its typical grey. On a whim I decide to check out Nomada in the old Hammer and Tong site. Spanish tapas for brekky - exciting! We choose a main - the snapper ceviche with avo, lime, peppers and cabbage salad hidden under 2 perfectly fried eggs - and 4 small plates (chorizo, nomada house-made bacon w potato sauce, the clacked egg on burnt hay & padron peppers). Perfect for the 2 of us. All dishes did not disappoint - I especially liked the smokiness of the clacked egg (I shan't tell you what's in it - hopefully you'd be curious enough to come in and find out 😉 it's certainly worth it) & the freshness of all the ingredients. Importantly coffees were excellent and we accompanied the meal with a vermouth (blanco) - what a treat at brekky! But there's more - we were given a complimentary tasting of the amontillado to finish off. That certainly warmed the cockles and we were ready to head back out into the cold grey morning - cheeks flushed and smiling. A lovely morning ❤️
MistaBurga
Warmth and friendliness on a rainy Sunday morning with my wife. Service was excellent. Hard to beat a brunch of tapas, coffee and vermouth. No gluten free bread. The highlight is the house made meats, chorizo and bacon. The coffee is of good standard too. Finished with amontillado that cuts through the palate. Great.

I visited Nomada last week and was so impressed with the customer service we received! The waiter who served us knew the menu and the wine list back to front and made plenty of suitable suggestions suited to our needs (and limited time frame). We ordered the yamba prawns, the lamb shoulder, the jamon, the octopus and the trout and loved every dish. Definitely worth a trip if you like good wine and candle lit tapas!
Rosie
Nice dinning experience! Very friendly staff and yummy food! We love the school prawns and the octopus! Will definitely come back to try their day time menu! Very yum tapas!!

I’m not sure how I found out about this place. Most likely it was through Instagram. We figured a tapas style brunch seemed interesting so why not!. When we arrived we were greeted with a table pretty quickly. The place smelt of smokey wood fire. Love it! The service was a tad slow for my liking. The waiters took a while to take our drinks and food order however not to worry.
Ashley
Being in Melbourne, we are so blessed to have so many options available to us. Standard eggs and toast, if that’s all you want, pho if you feel like going Asian, and the ever growing cafe scene continues to push what we can eat at the beginning of our day. Glass cloches and scallops anyone? . So why not tapas?
Collette Cox-Frankland
Fantastic - food was interesting and the variety made the dining an experience - which is the whole point of eating out! The staff were great and genuinely happy to be there with you. The upbeat atmosphere and relaxed decor also added to the night. Congratulations to all involved :)

Read about this new restaurant and very curious about it. My expactations were (too?) high. The reviews here seem to be mainly about daytime food, we went for dinner. Managed to get a spot on the bar, which was slightly uncomfortable because the height difference between the stool and the bar is a bit much. Most staff were friendly.

We took the feed me menu for $55 per person. I started with a manzanilla (sherry), which was ok, not great. I can't remember all the dishes, but I can remember some. We started with quail eggs. They were ok, but too cold, as if they came straight from the fridge. Of course they would have been prepared earlier, but I would recommend letting it get to room temperature before serving it out. I would prefer this dish to come as a little amuse with just 1 or even 1/2 an egg. We got six. Then we had an egg dish that was served on burnt hay. A very cool idea, but the restaurant smelled like this quite often (every time it got dished out to people) and it's not a great smell. We had a vegetarian and a meat option. I liked it, boyfriend didn't really like it. Then we had some skewers, I had mushroom and cheese which was yum, boyfriend had lamb, yum too! We thought that would be the last dish and that we would get dessert then, but another dish came which we were very happy with and which made it good value for money. Last dish was eggplant for me and fish for my boyfriend. Fish was yum, eggplant was ok. It came with two vegetable dishes. One was burnt beans, which I didn't really get the point of, wouldn't recommend. Other one was carrots with curd, which was very nice. The menu didn't come with dessert, which was a bit of a disappointment because I like it when it's included. We shared the olive oil cake, which was ok. The flavours of the cake itself were very nice but the total wasn't that well balanced. We received a free taster of a very nice sherry somewhere in between the courses.

The menu is good value for money. I can see how they try to be original, but the flavours are not amazing. I would consider going again for breakfast because of the great reviews, but I wouldn't go again for dinner.

Wow! Stumbled upon Nomada by chance and so glad we did. Delicious food, attentive and knowledgeable staff. So many favourites, thanks for marvelous evening!

We visited Nomada Cafe y Tapas for dinner and enjoyed the "Chef's Menu" option + cheese & churros for dessert. Great personalised service & delicious food - definitely recommend trying their signature Clacked Egg and we were even lucky enough to have the option of shaved truffle over one of our main course dishes.
Theycallmemaggie
It's rarely ever easy being the new kid on the block. In this case, the new kid is Nomada Cafe y Tapas and the block is Fitzroy's dining scene. Despite there being plenty of established eateries on said block, Nomada has already managed to stand out from the crowd with a tasty tapas-style brunch menu to be reckoned with.
NotoriousREB
Wow! What an absolutely stunning meal. We had the chef's menu which was amazing, the 'clacked egg' was a particular star. Great drinks list and very attentive staff. We'll definitely be returning soon.
Sweet And Sour Fork
Now, what are Clacked Eggs on Burnt Hay you ask? I was lucky enough not only to try them, but also to watch them being assembled. Turns out, you clack eggs by shelling them, then layering them with braised pine mushroom, potato foam, and shaved truffle, and then lighting it all on fire for good measure. The creamy potato foam served to separate the differing earthy notes of the pine mushrooms and the truffle into two distinct layers, and the overall result was a unique piece of theatre that tasted delicious to boot.
The City Lane
Nomada Cafe y Tapas Fitzroy is an all-day tapas spot that’s housed where Hammer & Tong used to be and sees Jesse Gerner (Anada, Bomba, Green Park), Jesse McTavish (Kettle Black), Michael Burr (Bomba), Greg McFarland (ex-chef at The Kettle Black) and Shane Barrett (Samuel Pepys) teaming up to bring all day tapas to Melbourne.
Where Will We Eat
Such a lovely winters day today, so thought it was a perfect excuse to check out Nómada Cafe y Tapas in Fitzroy. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, so we went with the Chefs Menu option for $35. Coupled with a glass of rosé, everything we had was delightful. My favourite dish had to the the clacked egg with Jamón & nettle emulsion on burnt hay. So smokey & salty and light & refreshing all at the same time! Can definitely see a few return visits on the horizon 👌
Minda Barley
So Hammer and Tong is no more and in its place is Nomada offering breakfast tapas. The layout is the same but it seems brighter and calmer. We secured two seats at the bar and service took a while but we got there in the end. Offering a wide range of beverages and 'breakfast tapas', the menu can be a little daunting in terms of thinking what goes with what and how many dishes should we order. There are different sized plates costing $5, $9, $15 and $19. There are also some sweet dishes thrown in amongst the menu items too.
Andrew Burr
Went a more traditional set of dishes this visit compared to usual. Scrambled eggs, tasty Nomada bacon and blistered tomatoes hit the spot after a morning swim session. A very good latte accompanied the meal and I finished it off with one of their homemade grapefruit and ginger cordials - delicious. Will keep coming back as I try and get through the entire menu!
Foodinfocusz
What a welcome relief from the usual fare offered in so many places nowadays .. the ubiquitous smashed avocado! What a fabulous idea to present tapas for breakfast, lunch and dinner! We loved the food, thanks, Greg and the friendly and knowledgeable service, thanks, Klyne! Can’t wait to return to try more of their tasty offerings.
Shannon Fox
Good coffee, nice atmosphere. My partner had the lunch feasting and thought it was good value, and the food was delicious. Traditional Spanish tapas style but modern food.

Amazing revamp of the old Hammer & Tong space, Nomada offers a light & bright space to dine. Entrust your culinary adventure with the capable front of house staff who will recommend the best food (& drink!) combination for you.

The dishes we tried were all exceptional, amazing flavours & textures, it's really hard to choose a favourite... croquettes, lamb, ocean trout... who could split that pack?!

Having said all the above, my tip...no matter what time you dine, a meal at Nomada is best finished with churros & sherry!!

Caitlin McCurrie
Beautiful and thoughtful food, particularly enjoyed the creme catalana with sangaria poached pear, the sangaria flavour was well balanced and didnt overpower the other flavours. Try the egg with burning hay, the smoke from the hay adds another dimension. Only wish is that the large portions were slightly larger and there were more options for the coffee.
